Troika Contemporary Crafts
Troika Contemporary Crafts is a unique gallery with a warm and inviting atmosphere that allows visitors to shop for handmade arts and crafts in a comfortable setting. Troika prides itself on showcasing art that blends the traditions of Southwest VA with the current and ever-changing nature of art. The work is made by established professional artisans, many working in their field between two and four decades and most come either from Floyd, Virginia or nearby regions. The gallery exhibits contemporary design and ideas, which fits beautifully in rustic cabins as well as contemporary homes. It shows a broad range of distinctive objects made by the hands of 25 local and regional artists using typical craft techniques and traditions. From woodworking to pottery, there is something for everyone. Although some of the artists in the gallery share a profession, their styles are their own. Brad Warstler and Benjie Osborne are featured wood workers that bring two beautiful approaches to the art. Warstler, an accomplished artist, has a broad range of work including custom furniture, period chairs, lamps and turned accessories. His work is traditional, sleek, smooth and polished. He has been exhibited in galleries throughout the United States. Osborne leans towards more of an Asian/Shaker style. He uses clean simple lines but allows for the natural textures of the wood. He makes practical functional pieces that also boast grace and style. Fiber workers, Carolyn Moore and Teagan Dobkin, are ladies of a lost art. Moore has over fifteen years of weaving experience. She uses a conventional floor loom and achieves different effects through changing the structural set up of the loom. She weaves everything from tea towels to shawls. Dobkin specializes in one-of-a-kind handcrafted headwear. Artisan inspired, designed, and crafted, her collections feature modern twists on time-honored styles, such as fedoras, cloches, porkpies, and wide-brims. 8

Anne Vaughan and Agnes Seebass are staples of the jewelry collections at Troika and in their regions. Vaughan handcrafts innovative and quality earrings, bracelets and necklaces. She creates jewelry for an everyday look. Seebass designs contemporary metal jewelry, using a mixture of German and Mexican culture. The forms and contrasts of Mexican nature are an inspiration for her simple smooth designs. Potter and founding member of “16 Hands” Ellen Shankin has been a studio potter in the mountains of Virginia since 1977. Her pottery is known for taking on the forms and feel of nature. Josh Copus, founder of Clayspace Co-op, was raised in Floyd County. The local traditions of crafts and agriculture, blended with the new ideas and outlook of the alternative community formed the basis of Josh’s life philosophy and strongly influences his work in ceramics. The artists listed are just a few in the many featured at Troika. The owners themselves are locally based artists. Silvie Granatelli of Silvie Granatelli Porcelain, Susan Icove of Icove Lighting and Gibby Waitzkin of Sarvisberry Gallery & Studio each bring their own unique, sophisticated tastes and design sensibilities to Troika. Troika, along with other art galleries and shops, is located in The Station across from the Floyd Country Store. The gallery hosts an Opening Reception every few months, on the first Friday of the month, that features selected artists. Folks are encouraged to stop by for the festivities and enjoy a refreshment, speak with the artist and browse the newest collection. The shows for 2013 are as listed: June will feature art made from wood, August will be jewelry, October will focus on upcycled work and November will be paper artists including owner Gibby Waitzkin.

Old Dogs Can Learn New Tricks! Affectionately known as “the dog winery,” Chateau Morrisette’s wine labels have traditionally included artists’ renderings of the First Dog: Hans. New wine labels featuring a modern Hans and the new Orchard Series of wines have just been introduced to store shelves. The labels truly reflect the family approach to winemaking the Morrisettes have fostered since 1978. Hans approves of his new look and is the centerpiece of the brand reflecting a playful, colorful image in an eyecatching way. Shelor Furnace: A Historical Site With the help of Tom Klatka, Virginia Department of Historic Resources, David Shelor, and Warren and Janice Shelor, the Toncray Furnace was placed on the Virginia State Historic List and the Federal Historic List in the spring of 2009. This enables us to protect the furnace from being destroyed. There have been discussions about restoring the furnace, but the cost has been a hindrance. The Shelor family decided to keep the furnace in its present condition as long as possible. Components of the West Fork Furnace include both above ground features and below ground archaeological deposits. Above ground features include the furnace structure, a wheel pit, a retaining wall and remnants of the headrace. Documented archaeological deposits take the form of soil alteration and fill deposits related to landscape modifications at a staging area for the storage and preparation of limestone flux, charcoal and iron ore. The form and composition of the intact furnace stack is similar to other known iron furnaces in western Virginia. Its plan view is nearly square with dimensions at ground surface measuring 27.5 by 29.5 feet, and its side view is trapezoidal, with the wider base gently tapering to an upper stack that measures about 14.5 square. The structure consists of locally quarried rock, dressed and dry laid. Some patches of sandy, friable mortar suggest some of the exterior was once mortared. Although the furnace interior is not accessible, a visual examination into the casting arch and tuyere arch suggests the brick inwall of the furnace is intact but the bricks are deteriorating. The casting arch is located on the southwest side of the furnace and measures 7.45 feet deep and 10.8 feet high. Its opening width of 15.6 feet tapers to a back width of 7.25 feet. A single tuyere arch on the southeast side measures 7.5 feet deep and 8.75 feet high. Its width tapers from 9.2 feet to 5.65 feet. The furnace is in very good condition, but the upper courses of the stack appear disturbed. Shelor family tradition recounts the removal of some stones from the furnace stack by the Virginia Department of Highways over 40 years ago. The stones were used to build bridge abutments which continue to support a bridge just upstream from the furnace. More Information at www.shelorfamily.org

MusicLab comes to Floyd, VA The Music Lab represents an innovative model of experiential learning in music technology, artistry, and performance as an extension of the education area schools provide. The program has been active in Roanoke for over 10 years, and has been housed at the Jefferson Center since 2009. January 2013 marked the opening of Music Lab Floyd, a pilot program produced by Jefferson Center, bringing this exciting innovative program to rural communities. The Floyd Music Lab is an after school program that meets at the June Bug Center on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The facility is outfitted with four audio workstations, two headphone stations and two full mixing stations with studio monitors. The lab is well equipped to make professional high-quality studio recordings. The program seeks to prepare local youth for future education, careers, and interests in the music and entertainment industries. Students are exposed to all genres of music and are encouraged to explore all aspects of music production including songwriting, arranging, recording, live sound, and performance. The pilot program is hosting guests as diverse as a West Virginia State fiddle and banjo champ, a conservatory trained vocal coach, and a grammy nominated recording artist, as well as local players and writers. The program serves area 6th12th graders. We are developing a new model for molding the lives of youth as they grow not only as musicians, engineers, and performers, but as contributing members of our society, knowledgeable consumers, and engaged citizens. It builds respect for diversity and creativity by drawing youth and instructors from a variety of backgrounds and communities. The class meets as a group for the first hour of the day, where director Joe DeJarnette goes over an audio skill utilizing hands on demonstrations. DeJarnette says, “I try to use student 14

work to demonstrate new ideas and skills whenever possible. At the beginning of the program, we try to get students into recording and playing almost immediately. Then, as their basic skills, knowledge and interests develop, we can then show them the subtleties of how to use the technology to enhance their particular genre or style of music.” The curriculum is designed to grant students increased autonomy as they progress through each phase, so that each student is best accommodated in terms of their musical abilities, interests, and personal development. Whereas one student may prefer to only ever don headphones and make beats, another may want to write and publish songs as well as engineer and produce professional recording sessions. “It’s a great opportunity for any student interested in exploring creativity through sound and music. It is an open-ended program, giving kids an opportunity to get what they want out of a learning experience. We have nice instruments available for use in the lab, so everyone is able to try out new things. We encourage all applicants to have a passion for music, but instrumental expertise is not a prerequisite. In fact, it’s better for workflow when some kids are more focused on production and some kids are focused more on playing and writing.” The Music Lab seeks to provide a learning environment catered to each student’s aspirations. Regardless if a student is highly motivated or is less focused and just wants to hang out, our curriculum will aid in their development both personally and academically. The Music Lab represents a forward-looking response to preparing our youth and community for the changing economy, music business, and emerging digital arts. Jefferson Center’s renowned Music Lab has in just four years expanded the horizons of hundreds of Roanoke-area teenagers. We have developed their interests in music into skills that will lead many

UNDERSTANDING BATTERY BACK UP PHOTOVOLTAIC (PV) SYSTEMS One of the most common misunderstandings about grid-tied PV systems is the fact that they shut down and disconnect from the grid in the event of a power failure. This is a safety feature to prevent back-feeding electricity into the utility grid and electrocuting line workers. It also means that a PV system will not produce usable energy for the duration of the grid failure. In this article we will discuss another type of PV system that will provide power when the grid is down. These PV systems are referred to as gridtied battery back up (GTBB). When the utility power goes out a GTBB system instantly switches over to the backup mode powering your loads, by using a specialized inverter and battery bank. It is important to understand that a battery based system has limitations as to the amount of power it can provide and how long it can provide that power. A GTBB system is also considerably more expensive than a standard PV system so it may not be the best choice for everyone. This article can only give a basic overview of what is involved in GTBB systems so we are going to focus on two things:
SYSTEM Most of us don’t think too much about how we use electricity. We typically plug in an appliance and let it do what it was designed to do. The electric utility just keeps on pushing those electrons down the wire as long as we need them. With a GTBB system you need to give a lot more thought about how you will use those electrons (energy) stored in those batteries because unlike the utility, they have a limited amount of energy available. The typical GTBB system is designed to power a selected number of loads such as the fridge, well pump, freezer, lighting and perhaps some electronics. How many items a system can power is dependent on the power output of the inverter. Like a gas generator, a GTBB inverter is rated in kilowatts (kW) of power output. The typical size we install in a residence is rated at 6 kW of continuous 120/240 Vac Output and we find that size unit will reliably run most of the essential loads in a home. If you want to run an air conditioner or heat pump you will need a much larger capacity inverter. A high quality inverter will generate pure sine wave power. This means the power is very clean, so you can power electronics or other sensitive equipment. It will also have a substantial surge 16

capacity. This means it can provide as much as two or three times its normal power for brief periods for starting motors, like your well pump. Once we know how many loads (kW) you want to run, we can then think about how much power you are going to need to run them. So now it is time to talk about batteries.
BATTERIES The batteries we work with in PV systems are similar to the kind found in your car, meaning they are based on lead acid technology. In a GTBB system we generally use a type of lead acid battery called Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM). This type of battery is sealed (you do not add water) and it does not release hydrogen gas when being charged, making it safe to use inside an enclosed area. AGM batteries, sometimes referred to as deep cycle, meaning they are designed to be discharged and recharged repeatedly without failing. There is a direct relationship to how much a battery costs and the number of discharge cycles it will withstand, so it is best to purchase the highest quality battery available. The amount of energy inside a battery is calculated in amphours (Ah) and the number of Ah in a battery determines how many loads you can run off of it and for how long. More amp-hours mean a bigger battery and a bigger battery means more weight. The batteries we install typically weigh between 2000 and 4000 pounds so we have to carefully choose the battery location. A GTBB system is always standing by to provide reliable power with no noise or smelly exhaust fumes. Hopefully this article will provide you with some useful information to determine if a GTBB is a good choice for you the next time the grid goes down.

Basketball Champs! “Unfinished Business” that was the message given to the 2012 2013 Lady Buffaloes basketball team from seniors Haley Bolt and Maria Kuchenbuch. Having lost prematurely in the regional semifinals to Glenvar High School the year before, the girls were determined not to allow that to happen again. “In the beginning of the season, Haley and I got to pick the theme to put on bracelets we had made. I thought it fit very well with our team because we had fallen just short the past three years and we had a lot of “unfinished business” to take care of,” said Maria. Maria and Haley have been members of the varsity girls basketball program since their freshman year. These two girls aren’t the most vocal leaders on the team, but they both make up for that by leading by example. After working hard all spring, summer and fall, the season finally got under way in late November. The girls faced a tough preseason schedule, with the majority of the Lady Buffaloes opponents being AA and AAA schools. One of the biggest tests of the season came over the Christmas break at the William Fleming C h r i st m a s To u r n a m e n t . Here they faced, Herndon High School, Trinity Christian, and St Vincent Pallotti High School. Kuchenbuch reflected “playing Photo By Linda DeVito in a tournament like that gave the team competition we had never seen before, which was good because in the regional and state tournament we had to play teams we have never faced before.” The Lady Buffaloes only lost two games in the pre-season and went undefeated in the Three Rivers District regular season. A record of 23-2 had the girls confident and ready for the post-season. After defending their district tournament title, the message remained that of “unfinished business”. A district title was nice, but it was not where this team wanted their season to end. The past few seasons, the Lady Buffaloes have been knocked out of the post season in the regional semifinal game, but this year it was a mere speed bump as the Buffs beat the James River Lady Knights 84-54. The Lady Buffs closed out the regional tournament the next evening with a win against Patrick Henry, becoming the girls Region C champions. The team marched onward to the state quarterfinal game against Gate City at the Salem Civic Center. After the victory over Gate City in front of the biggest crowd the girls had all season, Coach Alan Cantrell entered the locker room yelling, “Rich-what?” with the team responding, “Richmond!” You couldn’t help but get chills of excitement as you watched them celebrate as a team. With Floyd County in full support, the girls headed to Richmond. This was a new experience for everyone, including the two seniors. 18

You could see the enthusiasm in each girls face but you could also see a look of determination. This is where the culmination of all the hard work, all of the open gyms, morning practices, and running pays off. Maybe it’s that one extra sprint you do, even though you feel like you can’t make it, this is where it all becomes worth it. The girls traveled to Richmond and accomplished exactly what they had set out to do, beating George Mason in the state semifinals. The state championship was set for the next day, the opponent, the Lady Warriors of Central-Wise. The state final game was a hard fought contest with the Buffs jumping out to an eleven point lead at the half, but Central fought back, making it a close contest. But with the senior leadership, the Lady Buffs were victorious by a score of 72-62 to claim the state championship trophy. To some it seemed that the season was at its end, but as the girls have learned, winning the game was just the beginning of the celebration. “The surprise when we got home had to have been the most amazing feeling in the world. I couldn’t stop smiling at everyone standing out there after midnight in the freezing cold just waiting for us. Our win meant as much to us as it did for our fans. I couldn’t ask for a better community or team. Thanks for making this final season the best I could ever ask for. You all amaze me!” Haley Bolt remarked joyfully. This quote by Haley was in response to the reception that awaited the team, led by a police escort and greeted by fans at the center of town. The girls danced their victory dance under the only stop light in Floyd County on a cold winter night. A memory they will never forget. At the beginning of the season Haley and Maria were in charge of designing the team shirt, this was the quote that was chosen for the shirt: “Heart is the difference between those who attempt and those who achieve.” The Lady Buffaloes showed so much heart throughout the entire season, and in the end they indeed ACHIEVED their goal, the right to call themselves STATE CHAMPIONS! Congratulations to the two seniors, here your “business is finished” and it’s on to new challenges, good luck to you in the future. Following high school both girls plan to attend college, Maria Kuchenbuch will be enrolling at Roanoke College and Haley Bolt will be attending James Madison University. Floyd’s Resident Firearms Instructor Jim’s first gun was a rifle his father gave him for Christmas at the age of 12. He has been shooting ever since. With over 30 years of experience in handloading ammunition and specializing in load development research, he spends many hours shooting and testing his ammunition. He also makes his own bullets by casting molten lead into bullet molds. Having spent 30 years in industrial construction as a pipefitter/welder, Jim decided it was time to retire. A lifelong resident of Charleston, SC, he also decided it was time for a change from heat, humidity and hurricanes. After coming to Floyd on vacation in the spring of 2008, Jim and his wife Janet fell in love with the area. Eight month later, they packed up their house, three dogs, two cats and moved to Floyd permanently. It wasn’t long after that, Jim realized the need for a firearms instructor in Floyd County. He met with Sheriff Zeman to discuss the possibility of being a firearms instructor in the county. They discussed what information was needed to not only meet the requirements of the Commonwealth of Virginia but what was important for the citizens of Floyd County to know. Jim opened for business in the summer of 2009. Jim is an NRA certified instructor and offers a variety of services including concealed handgun permit classes, training for beginning and advanced handgun, rifle and shotgun shooters , both in a group setting and private instruction. He also offers in-home self defense education and planning. Among the other services offered are firearms appraisals, which can assist the owner in determining the value of their firearms for insurance purposes or for buying and selling. Also offered is oneon-one consultation for first time firearms buyers to assist them in the choosing of a firearm that would best meet their needs. Having family members in SC who raised cattle and farmed, Jim has a high respect for those in the agricultural community. He helps to eradicate coyotes and groundhogs where they are a problem to farmers and landowners. He offers this service free of charge, as a way to give back to the community. With three years of United States Army sanctioned training as an armorer, Jim has a keen understanding of communication, coordination and planning. He is very familiar with leadership and discipline and can follow as well as lead. When instructing people in firearms, he believes communication and understanding are key. “If you can’t explain the basic concepts of firearms and their safe use and handling, it can lead to disastrous results,” stated Jim. A large part of the concealed handgun permit class consists of an in-depth review of the Commonwealth of Virginia firearms 20

statues. Although Jim is not trained in law or an attorney, he is very familiar with the firearms statutes and stresses the importance of knowing the law regarding firearms. Jubilee Cohousing A month after heavy equipment noisily reshaped a steep landscape into a sloping entrance off Needmore Lane, we ceremoniously strung up the “Future Home of Jubilee! Cohousing” banner, in its well-built wooden frame. That satisfying June day in 2012 heralded an explosion of activity for members of our forming community. In the five years since first sowing the seeds of this cohousing dream, many invisible things had come to pass toward our goal, but here, at last, was one for the world to see. Jubilee! exists, the banner announces, a neighborhood being created by its members! In the America of my childhood, neighborhoods were often the heart and refuge of family life; the out-of-doors was for exploring imaginatively by one’s self or with neighbor children, and whichever adults were on hand watched and listened discretely, and intervened (when necessary) judiciously. Everybody knew everybody else in the neighborhood. Kids had enough pals to make sandlot ball teams, play capture the flag and kick the can. Families cookedout together on summer weekends, hosted sleep-overs, and pitched in when someone had a baby, or was sick or bereaved. In our neighborhood one family worked out ways to share their pool, declaring certain days private days and other days open through use of a signal flag. This is the very idea behind cohousing, particularly comforting in the midst of the various types of scary climate change we’ve seen since the last century. There are about 130 cohousing communities operating in this country, and they demonstrate a keen ability to re-create the more functional and fun aspects of neighborhood life from the 1950’s, while at the same time be on the cutting edge of ecoconsciousness by addressing the questions of— how to reduce consumption, reuse materials and recycle extensively as a community. For example, our plan for being a Passivhaus cohousing neighborhood skillfully addresses concerns for our environment and our economy. Passivhaus construction, used for years in Europe, claims up to 90% less energy use for great overall energy savings, and lower carbon emissions. The technology of the construction won’t limit the design of the homes. In fact, we anticipate with great excitement the fun of soon collaborating as a group to design our homes and neighborhood. My particular passion, though, is for the people part of the community; the bonding, trust building, creative problem-solving, cooperative decision-making, and all the wonderful excuses for life celebrations.

As a group, founding members of Jubilee! are committed to a neighborhood that will be both kid-friendly and elder-friendly, made of thirty or so homes that will be built closely clustered, designed to accommodate aging in place, and with cars kept to the periphery. Reaching out to my Jubilee! friends to offer or ask for, light assistance will be easy because they’ll be just a stone’s throw away. We will be able to catch up with each other’s news when we collect our mail or share a meal at the Common House, or when out on the paths. It’ll be simple to find a walking buddy, or make up a carpool to town. In the months since the entrance sign first went up, Jubilee! members have had some more big visible firsts. In July we held our first members retreat on the thirtyeight acre property, camping out under the stars, complete with campfire and s’mores. In October, we hosted our first Explore the Land event, offering hikes, hay rides, children’s Halloween activities and refreshments. We are currently crowing about having published our website. Some of us Jubileers are now training as facilitators. Students from several states gather for four-day weekends of intensive study and practice facilitating in communities in North Carolina and Virginia. This training is stoking a perennial fire in me; to empower myself and others through a variety of processes. We get to work with other communities who use consensus, the same group decisionmaking process that Jubilee! uses, a process that seeks the consent of all participants. Watching other communities function, we can see into Jubilee’s future too. In one group, we glimpse communication challenges that will inevitably come up. In another, how older community members hand off responsibilities to younger ones. We see the results of reins held too tight, or too loosely. I love what we’re learning, because it fits with our values of interdependence, and developing deep respect for individual views and needs. It jibes with our desire to replace competition with cooperation. It’s real. And it feels really fitting for twentyfirst century Floyd. The Floyd Radio Show:
Live at the Floyd Country Store! The Floyd Radio Show, broadcast (streamed) live from the Floyd Country Store, has rapidly found a place in the varied landscape of Floyd’s wonderful, creative culture. Several years ago, the owners of The Floyd Country Store had the idea of starting a local radio show. It would be a variety show that was light hearted, fun and showcased local music and stories. When a couple of young old- time musicians, Anna Roberts-Gevalt and Elizabeth LaPrelle, asked if they could perform at the store, that vision began to grow into The Floyd Radio Show: Views from Buffalo Mountain. Anna and Elizabeth had developed a program for use in schools and community venues. It weaved together traditional ballads, songs and fiddle and banjo tunes with storytelling, handcrafted images and pieces of theater. When the Country Store owners saw the show, they realized that it contained many of the elements they had envisioned for a radio show and that these two young performers had the energy and charisma needed to direct a show for the store. The show premiered at The Floyd Country Store on September 3, 2011 with a packed house and continues on the second Saturday of each month (taking a break for the months of June, July and August, when many performers are busy with music festivals). “Anna & Elizabeth are such talented musicians,” says Heather Krantz, special projects coordinator for the store. “People are drawn to hear them sing and play, and when you put them on stage with all these other amazing musicians, it makes for a really fantastic, old timey radio show experience”. Each month, Anna, Elizabeth and other cast members construct a unique show. They write scripts packed full of hilarious skits, imaginary tales and true stories of Appalachian life and perform them with little time for the cast to 26

rehearse. What comes out is a truly authentic, off the cuff experience for listeners and participants alike. As an extra treat for those who attend the live performance, the performers put on an informal concert after each show. Podcasts and highlights from past shows can be found on The Floyd Country Store website. As active members of the old time music scene, Anna and Elizabeth have convinced some of the most talented musicians around to perform. In the first season alone, musical guests included award winning flatpicker and guitar maker Wayne Henderson, banjo player Riley Baugus, West Virginia storyteller Jimmy Costa, singer Carol Elizabeth Jones, and a host of local favorites including Mac & Jenny Traynham, Janet Turner, Chance McCoy (now of Old Crow Medicine Show) and the Black Twig Pickers. Martin Guitar Company recently stepped up as the show’s first major sponsor. After hearing about the show in a National Public Radio documentary about Elizabeth LaPrelle, they expressed an interest in helping to keep alive and promote this type of authentic, traditional music. In each show, the cast will thank Martin with a specially written skit and a call-out on our podcast of the show. Hotel Floyd is another sponsor to be featured on the May show. Complimentary Therapies for Diabetes Type 2 diabetes is one of the fastest growing diseases in the United States, with 17 million Americans afflicted with the disease, according to the American Diabetes Association. As more and more Americans incorporate complementary therapies into their program of health care, people with diabetes, too, are looking to the usefulness of different therapies to complement their lifestyle measures and medical care. A Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) therapy, Shiatsu addresses diabetes from the perspective of the organs that are affected – excessive thirst is associated with the spleen; excessive urination and leg pain are indicative of an imbalance in the kidney and/or bladder energy; skin allergies and itching suggests an imbalance in the lung energy. By appropriately stimulating different points in the body associated with these organs, improved function can result and a person's normal health levels can be obtained. A YOJammin’ Good Time! By Hari Berzins Get ready, folks! The Floyd Yoga Jam is coming to the mountains near you. This Newest Festival on the East Coast combines music, yoga, art and fun and is held every Labor Day Weekend in Floyd, VA. This August 30 - September 1, 2013, festival goers from New York to Florida will gather to enjoy incredible music, awesome yoga, the YOJam’s interactive community Art Village, KidsVille and the People Playground. Fantastic local food, coffee, beer, wine, kombucha and more! Come settle in for a rejuvenating weekend! The festival is set creek-side in idyllic Indian Valley at the Burnette Farm Retreat Center, amid acres of rolling meadows, soft pine forests and incredible views. The Floyd Yoga Jam, also known in these parts as The YOJam, is a hometown production of the community of Floyd and the creative passions of the Dancin’ Dakinis (a dakini is a dancing spirit), Shirleyann Burgess and Laura Polant, two Floydian women who were lucky enough to raise their children in this wonderful town. “Devotion, music, compassion, fun and love are the basis of this event, which makes Floyd Yoga Jam a powerful means of gathering and sharing in nature, taking participants from the beauty of the music and yoga into their interior calm,” says Burgess, owner of Living Light Yoga Studio and Wellness Center in Floyd. “We want to give back to our community and offer local folks the chance to make a decent living for honest work,” says Polant. But the mission is deeper than that. “We can reach many people and expose them to unimagined dreams and possibilities. We share what our community has created and invite them to take home a vision of a healthy body, mind and community,” says Burgess. It seems they are achieving their goal—the most memorable moment from the inaugural event for both of the Dakinis was the 32

sight of hundreds of people spilling out of yoga tents, all moving in unison like prayer flags. “I could feel their hearts opening, then my heart opened even more and tears of love and happiness filled me—once again, I knew this festival was the answer to reaching the silence and light of many,” Burgess recalls. The hope for this year is to continue spreading the love and to break the 2500 attendee mark. With leaders in the yoga community joining the line-up, they are right on track to meet their goal. MC Yogi is the headliner for 2013. He will lead two yoga classes and perform his rockin’ hip hop! “I love MC Yogi and use his music in my yoga classes. It is young yet old, fun, and has a wonderful message. I was beyond ecstatic when I heard he would join our line-up,” says Polant. National Public Radio says, “MC Yogi is changing the face of devotional music in America.” The artist’s own website says, “Wait. Hip-hop and yoga? The Ramayana with a backbeat? Stories of Shiva and Shakti, Ganesh and Hanuman and the rest of the ancient Hindu gods, all funked up and slamming up against potent, propulsive graffiti beats custom built to drive eager listeners into a divine frenzy? You’ve never heard anyone like MC Yogi.” MC Yogi is sure to bring a lot of energy to the YOJam, and he is joined by other big names of genre-bending yoga and devotional music such as Donna De Lory, Durga Das, DJ Drez, Sean Johnson and the Wild Lotus Band, Amy Steinburg, and many local Floyd favorites like Scott Perry, Deer Run Drifters, Bernie Coveny and more. The weekend is also packed full of yoga and meditation classes including Beryl Bender Birch, author of Beyond Power Yoga, who was one of the seven women named as “Innovators Shaping Yoga Today” by Yoga Journal in 2000. Made in America Economically it has been a difficult five years for our country, but as an old friend of mine used to say, “everything bad is good for something”. That “good something” seems to be the realization that we, as American consumers, need to be more conscious that the purchasing decisions we make have real consequences for our economy, ourselves and our nation.
The Awakening
As a clothing manufacturer and local retailer, we produce all of our organic cotton products here in the USA. We have made a real commitment to local sourcing and as a result we have attracted many new customers over the past few years. When we started our business almost eight years ago, it was our certified organic cotton and sustainable business practices that attracted so many people, but we have since learned that it is just as important to our customers that our products are all American made. In our communications with our customers and suppliers we are witnessing a dramatic awakening on the part of American consumers. They now realize the importance of products Made in the USA. In fact, that is now considered their single most important reason when deciding whether or not to purchase an item. We hope that this trend of local consciousness endures because the ripple effect of purchasing goods produced in America is huge. When you make the conscious choice to purchase American goods you are not only supporting employment for other Americans, you are also helping to keep local dollars circulating in local communities. Some studies suggest that up to sixty cents of every dollar spent locally goes directly back into the community. The continuing circulation of these dollars spent helps to promote additional employment, creating a virtuous circle. 42

Cotton, the environment, cheap labor and Made in the USA
From an environmental perspective, when it comes to producing and purchasing clothing made of cotton, the importance of Made in the USA increases exponentially. Few people realize that most cotton grown in the United States is subsidized by our government. Every year between 40% and 60% of that subsidized cotton is then sold to Chinese garment manufacturers. The cotton is shipped from the US to China where it is used in clothing production in low wage, low cost factories that often operate without strict labor, safety and environmental standards. The finished garments are then loaded back onto a ship and exported back to the US. This creates a huge carbon footprint and a trail of wasted resources, all in the name of lower labor costs. This makes little sense to us, yet retail shelves around our country are packed full of these items, all of which are made by paying less for labor and simply ignoring the environmental impact that is brought about. In addition, there are global financial issues involved as we help to support and create a stronger China; a China that might very well turn out to be our most ardent rival in the world economically and militarily.

The Spirit of Floyd: Authenticity and Fun The first words that come to mind when I think about Floyd County, Virginia are authenticity and fun. Not packaged thrills, but real fun, genuine, heartconnected joy. The joys of natural beauty, friends, family, community, creativity and so much more abound. I have lived many places in my life, but Floyd is and will always be my heart home and these are qualities of life that I hold dear. In fact, I so identify these qualities with Floyd in my mind that I have come to think of Floyd not only as a geographical location but a state of mind and a way of life. Just as Jesus told us, “The Kingdom of Heaven is within you,” so you might consider that the “Republic of Floyd” is a state of graceful being, where you allow yourself to be who you really are, take it or leave it, amen. And where you know that’s not only OK to be your real self, but it’s the prevalent happy custom that amplifies everybody’s sense of well-being. Go to a party in a large metro area, and many of the conversations between folks meeting each other for the first time sound like resume exchanges with each of the two parties asking themselves, “Are you important enough for me to invest my time and energy in getting to know you? How can I use you?” Rather than taking the time to discover the unique and special gifts of the new friend, as well as common connections and interests and asking, “How can I support you?” I’m reminded of the Shania Twain song, “That Don’t Impress Me Much,” and an interview I once had with Amina Eagle, the gallery curator Omega Institute. In the song, Twain is seeking the intrinsic qualities of love and connection, not the outer posturing of her prospective romantic applicants. Many years ago, I drove from our cabin in Pilot to upstate NY to show my art to this older lady with a very powerful presence. She looked and looked at the paintings I had laid out and said nothing at all. A bit unnerved, but determined to exhibit there, I asked her, “Would you like to see my resume and clippings?” “No,” she said. “The art speaks for itself. You can have a show. And would you like to come teach here as Artist-in Residence?” I don’t know where she grew up. I’m guessing New England. But to me, the focus on heart and soul of things made her a Floydian and I instantly felt at home.

Preserving Music History through High-tech Recording If you have spent any time in Floyd, you know that there is an obvious fusion of old meets new. The slow and steady pace of this one stop light town overlays a vivacious, talented and highly skilled population. The locals are always working to improve their community and preserve the lifestyle and culture of a slower day, a different place in time. This true nature of Floyd is exemplified in the story of Dave Fason of Windfall, the band and Windfall Studios. One Friday night, out on the street in front of the Floyd Country Store (one of the major stops along “The Crooked Road”), Dave heard a voice singing that touched his senses from his ears to his heart. “pure country, pure mountain” he recalls. Moving towards this voice his eyes beheld a 5’2”, silver-haired woman “belting out these songs…” That little woman with the big voice was singer, Janet Turner. Dave approached Mrs. Turner, “I know that you don’t know me, but has anyone ever recorded you? I would really love to record your music.” Janet had been recorded before, but only informally, in the living room of a fellow musician. Her husband Lewis was at first skeptical, wondering what Dave wanted out of the deal. “When you hear someone that needs to be preserved, you gotta’ do it,” Dave said. He wanted to record Janet Turner because he realized the priceless value of preserving a piece of Appalachian and American folk music history, and that is the beauty of Floyd and the people here. With the support of The Floyd County Store and the talents of Dave Fason of Windfall Studios and a host of other top area musicians, the recording of “When My Time Comes” by Janet Turner began. The CD is available exclusively at The Floyd Country Store. It was decided, that in order to get the best overall sound and work with other musicians’ schedules, a “discreet” or tracked recording was the way to go. Each of the instruments is recorded independently and then mixed together to create the finished song. Janet picked out the 48

ten songs she wanted to record, then recorded what are known in the recording industry as “scratch tracks.” Janet sang and played her music live, in order to give the other musicians a starting point to add their instruments. Dave remarked, “She moved through all ten songs with ease and grace.” Over the next 45 days the bass, guitar, and percussion lines were recorded. Finally, Janet’s songbird voice and autoharp tracks were added. The complete process from recording to mixing was completed at Windfall Studios. Dave Hoffner, at Hoffner Haus Studio in Franklin, TN did the final mastering. Other local musicians that Windfall Studios has helped produce include Mike Mitchell and Abe Goorskey with Blue Moonshine, Mac and Jenny Traynham, Windfall, SpoonFight, BigMama Joy, Meters Running and Bill Adams.The studio can be found on Facebook. Dave Fason’s love for music, the mountains of Virginia and its culture, along with his amazing talents as a musician and studio engineer make him an asset to Floyd. We asked Dave about his current activities with Windfall Studios. In the last two years he has worked cooperatively with Floyd Elementary School, Heather Krantz and the Music Lab, and Joe DeJarnette at Studio 808 to record songs that the students wrote. Last year, they had a CD release concert in the FCHS auditorium, accompanied by local musicians. Also in the works are CDs by Mike Mitchell, Gospel on the Connnor’s, Bob Evans of the Cosmic Orphans and Ray Moreland’s Christmas CD. Windfall Studios may be booked at discounted hourly rates in increments of ten hours. Dave also offers weekend packages, for clients to stay on site with studio access for 14 hours a day. The studio has recently upgraded to “ProTools 10”. Dave offers start to finish compact disc production. Windfall Studios’ reasonable rates makes recording your own music affordable. Floyd Country Store Simple Country rounded out this stellar group of musicians in 2006, and became Windfall. Windfall has started work on its third CD. Visit the Facebook site for updates and concerts. For the coming season, Windfall has booked 14 performances along with several fundraiser concerts. This June will be their 6th year performing in the Oak Grove Pavilion Concert series, on June 22. Floyd Young Life Floyd Young Life invites you to come run or walk our 4th Annual 5K or 1K Fun Run on Saturday morning, May 11th, 2013. This year, we will be running right through downtown Floyd, starting on Main Street. Celebrate Mother’s Day Weekend in the beautiful Lineberry Park while supporting Floyd Young Life & local youth. The 5K starts at 10 am and is a perfect route for runners who like great scenery and rolling hills. The 1K, which starts at 9:30 am, is designed for families, young kids, and walkers of all ages; we encourage you to come out with mothers to celebrate Mother’s Day. Registration & packet pick-up begin at 8:30 am and awards ceremony to follow, both in Lineberry Park in Downtown Floyd (between Floyd Country Store and Winter Sun). Enjoy the quaint and beautiful town of Floyd with water available along the course, local refreshments after the race, and all the while, listening to something Floyd is known for, great music!
Floyd County High School Amateur Radio Club
Floyd County High School Amateur Radio Club provides a unique opportunity for students to engage in the amateur radio hobby. Club members are part of a technical/non-technical group which communicates and collaborates together. FCHS Amateur Radio Club is a positive addition to other school programs, inspiring a new generation of communicators, engineers, and hobbyists alike through the practical application of technology. Floyd County High School ARC meets weekly on Thursdays after school and during scheduled in-school club days. We obtained call sign N4FCH (Floyd County High), posted a club website at FCHS webpage, and set up a Facebook page for students/members to check for updates and share the page with friends and family. Club teeshirts have been made and a temporary club QSL card was designed and produced. Members communicate via amateur “ham” radio and incorporate other networking methods for a broader base. They interact with other licensed amateur radio operators, with club members and guests. They learn and apply knowledge of amateur radio, understand amateur radio and the operator’s involvement in emergency preparedness, trained emergency correspondence, security, education, and skills training. Those with technological interests use their skills related to equipment set-up and maintenance, etc. Members hear from licensed operators, view demonstrations, and practice their amateur radio communications skills in service to the school and to the community. I am 27 years old, born and raised in Giles County. Most folks call me Mandy for short (nickname my daddy gave me when I was first born.) I have been in the healthcare industry for ten years, specializing in geriatrics. I started off as a Certified Nursing Assistant in 2003 and then graduated from Radford City School of Practical Nursing in 2009. Currently I provide patient care at Heritage Hall in Blacksburg, Virginia. I lost my father in August, 2012. The day he died, God gave me an insight of sunbeams above the hospital that day. It was my calling to Photography. Since then, I see things I’d never took the time to see before. I want to go above and beyond to capture that moment of someone smiling, or an emotional time in their lives.
