Unconventional Weddings Weddings serve many functions in our culture. In history, they were matters of state, or at least, matters of local community. They joined families in business, political, and other types of power alliances. Often, they were arranged by patriarchs to advance these connections with little regard for the wishes of the bride and groom and equally little input from them. Nuptials were cookie-cutter affairs, similarly scripted, costumed, and with a set step-by-step process, from beginning to end. Thankfully, couples no longer have to go with the traditional program; they get to create their own unique program. Today, they have the power to choose whom they love and how they want to celebrate their love. Weddings have increasingly become a form of personal expression, truly an art form. They have always been a kind of sacred theater, but now the bride and groom have become the producers, so to speak, of their own theatrical event. The theater analogy is actually a pretty apt one, because just as in putting on a show, the couple will be considering where they want to stage the event, the cast of characters, to have a wedding party or not, how the people involved will move during the processional and recessional, where they will stand, and also what words will be said. Couples act as production designers because they decide on the overall look and feel of the wedding from venue to photography and everything in between. I love the old-fashioned movie star look of the couple you see here posing in a tango-like dip. A far cry from the stiffly posed wedding photos of the more distant past, isn’t it? Some couples choose a theme for their wedding and that theme will decide their choice of “stage” and “costume.” Some examples include, the couple I worked with who expressed the way their loved transformed their lives by using the symbol of metamorphosis, the butterfly. They staged an intimate ceremony with seven or eight close friends in a butterfly garden. Another couple created a larger, very highly stylized “Steampunk” wedding (think Victorian sci-fi, Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty in their top hats, and the production design of Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland”). Couples may come to a marriage with children from a previous marriage. In this situation, they often opt to incorporate a sand ceremony into the event, to symbolize the joining of the lives and the blending of their families. Or they may choose to do a simple elopement, as did a couple I worked with who had just closed on a beautiful wooded Floyd County property. We did the

6

www.Facebook.com/FloydMagazine

ceremony on a lovely winter day there under a canopy of ice-laced branches. Another unconventional setting is Floyd Yurt Lodging, where in this venue, photographer Rhonda Withington and I offer what we call “A Sunday Kind of Love” with highly affordable wedding packages. The yurt’s unusual round shape, pretty spiral staircase, and elegant yet rustic Bohemian Chic style make it a perfect setting for a fun and memorable wedding of up to 20 people. The “soundtrack” for unconventional weddings usually departs from the traditional “Wedding March” or “Pachelbel’s Canon in D” into music that is meaningful to the couple or that goes with the wedding’s theme. Bagpipes, music by U2 and Tori Amos, and the theme from the film, “Cloud Atlas,” are but a few different examples of processional music choices. In Floyd, we have settings galore for any size wedding a couple might envision, as well as places to stay, eat, dance, and celebrate. We can accommodate couples who want weddings small or large, traditional or unconventional. Whatever you desire, we can make it happen! Whether you live in Floyd, the surrounding region, or you are coming here from farther away for a destination wedding, we welcome you. We look forward to working with you to make your wedding reflect you as a couple. Thank you for choosing Floyd for your special day! Rev. Featured Millinary Artist At Troika Gallery The beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains have many hidden treasures. As you turn off the Blue Ridge Parkway at Rt. 8, you are easily led to the town of Floyd located in Floyd County, Virginia. Although there are many special things to see and do while in Floyd, a definite place to stop is Troika Gallery of Contemporary Crafts known for its many fine products. The crafts at Troika are unique in execution and style, using such mediums as woodworking, textile arts, jewelry, blown glass, and much more. This season, Troika showcases the work of a very talented milliner, Teagan Dobkin whose specialty is making hats for men and women the old fashioned way. When Teagan Dobkin arrived in Floyd County five years ago, she arrived in Floyd in her signature style with a hat on her head. She can’t say for sure which hat it was−it was one she handcrafted herself, or acquired from the Manhattan milliner she trained under, or salvaged from a New England antique retailer. Teagan came to Floyd in the spring of 2010 ready to start fresh with the frenetic Brooklyn air still tangled in her hair. She pulled into town with a passion and a plan arriving with a collection of hat blocks, a sewing machine, and a cache of fabric and felt. If New York is where dreams are born she thought, the wide open space of Appalachia is where they must grow, mature, and take flight. While hat making is her current creative focus, Teagan has always been interested in fashion. She likes to view it as a full-body hat-to-toe artistic experience. It’s a medium she plays with every day as she refines and reconstructs her personal style marked by irreverence to conventional fashion. In her craft as in her daily life, she approaches color, cut, texture, and function from a different viewpoint, pushing traditional fashion boundaries out of mind. Indeed, playing by the rules has never been part of Teagan’s entrepreneurial approach to art fashion. The endless potential of raw fabric became clear to her during her first sewing lesson at age seven. Her imagination ignited; sewing served as a creative anchor during years of wanderings into metalsmithing, ceramics, piano, dance, and more. When Teagan sewed her first stitch as

owner and creative director of Tittle Millinery in 2010, it had been a long time in the making. It was designing which landed Teagan in the middle of Manhattan, studying woman’s apparel at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Yet it wasn’t within the classroom that Teagan was most inspired. Fiercely independent and creatively uncompromising, she couldn’t help but pursue a path that extended beyond her required curriculum. Soon after arriving in the city, Victor Osborne’s millinery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, caught her eye. Fascinated by Osborne’s expert injection of 21st century edge into this historic trade, Teagan soon landed an internship at the shop. A formal apprenticeship in the East Village with Barbara Feinman Millinery followed. There, Teagan continued her training in classic techniques, while at the same time experimenting with modern millinery’s limitless possibilities. Confident in her craft and ready to rejuvenate after years in the city, Teagan was receptive to a twist of fate that nudged her in the direction of Floyd County. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, she is pleased to create millinery from her beautiful homestead. Always a lover of textiles, dreaming up hats from raw fiber is often where Teagan’s hat creation begins. With her precious collection of hat blocks ranging from the late 1800’s to present day, Teagan hand stretches material over the forms to begin the initial silhouette of a hat. From traditional styles to post-modern statement pieces, each hat begins with felt made of natural materials like hare, wool, alpaca, or woven grasses made of panama, banana leaf, or sea grass. On an antique cast iron sewing machine, she reinforces the structure with a sweatband and hemmed brim. After carefully handsculpting the final shape, Teagan delicately but durably hand-stitches the finishing touches of ribbon, fine textiles, leather, feathers, and antique trinkets to give each hat a distinctive personality of its own. Troika Gallery is located at 203 South Locust Street, in downtown Floyd Virginia. Contact 540-745-8764 or visit the web site at www.troikacrafts.com.

Will’s Ridge Family Roots This story about Will’s Ridge begins in Ireland around 1726. A young man name William Dulaney was growing up in a small village. He was very well known and everyone admired him as an industrious leader. The people in this area were hard working and resourceful, making do with what they had. After supper at night and on Sunday afternoons, they talked about America. They pondered the idea of a land where everyone has plenty and were free to take advantage of the opportunities. They thought that it would truly be a wonderful place to live, if only there was a simple way of traveling to America. Having little, they thought it was an impossibility to travel to this new land. For years, life went on as it had for generations and then around 1746, they had a bountiful year. Everyone had plenty of money and so they decided to pool their resources together. Their dream was to build a shoe factory in America because they knew that everyone would need to purchase at least two pairs of shoes. Eventually this factory would make enough money to allow others to travel to America as well. Now married with a young son he named William, Jr, William became the leader of the village. One day, the village was excited to inform him that they had raised enough money to finance a trip for William and his small family to travel to America. He gathered everyone together to discuss the plans for the factory and he began planning his trip to this new land on the other side of the ocean. In 1746, this industrious and ambitious young man with his wife and small son began his voyage. He was excited to be traveling to a new land that he had heard so much about, yet never seen. Once in America, it took several years to find a suitable place he could afford to settle down. One day, as William stood on the top of a small hill, he noticed a very high and long ridge in a beautiful setting. That is the day William knew it would be the new location for the factory. William and his family built a small cabin at the foot of this ridge, which was now known as the Beaver Creek Community. They busied themselves with gardening, planting crops, and taking care of the small details that come with settling into a new home. Years passed and his son, William, Jr married a lovely girl from nearby and shortly thereafter, a son arrived. He was named William, the third, but everyone knew him as Will.

10

www.Facebook.com/FloydMagazine

From letters received from William’s family back in Ireland, the people from the village realized how hard life was in this new land. True, it was a beautiful place, but it was very hard living in a wilderness, which America was back then. As they grew older, the people in Ireland gave up any hope of ever traveling to America. As he grew older, William, Sr. became very sick. His family gathered around his bed and listened as he told wonderful stories about Ireland. Time and again, he spoke about the beautiful place he had left. One day when he was 60 years old, William passed without realizing his dream of building a shoe factory. It was decided by the family to bury William at the foot of the ridge that he had discovered so many years ago. The years rolled by and now William III was grown and married with a wife and a son. The child was named Richard after relatives back in Ireland. Richard soon became the big brother to Hiram, Samuel, and Daniel Dulaney. They all grew up and throughout the years, married and had families of their own. Each brother settled at the foot of the beautiful ridge their grandfather had discovered calling it the most beautiful place he could find. As the years passed, more people came and settled along the ridge which was then named, “Grandfather’s Ridge”. But after a few years, it was renamed “Will’s Ridge.” After eleven generations living on this ridge, there are still 17 families, consisting of three generations still calling Will’s Ridge their home. My husband, Lewis Turner, and I have lived here 54 years and I am blessed to have the most beautiful view of the big ridge out our front window. And I am very fortunate to have a picture of Peradine Dulaney Reed and her husband George, along with the home in which they lived. She was my great grandmother, who was the sixth generation of the Will Dulaney family. I am so glad we live along Will’s Ridge and know the story about William and his family who traveled from Ireland so many years ago. And now this wonderful story from my cousin, Sharon Reed Cox, has been passed down to a new generation! George W and Peridine Dulaney Reed

Red Rooster Coffee Roaster Red Rooster Coffee Roaster is making strides in 2015 towards being recognized as one of the country’s elite coffee roasters. In fact, Red Rooster’s successful wholesale business has extended into northern Virginia, Maryland, and New York. Also, their small retail store, The BlackWater Loft, located in the small town of Floyd, Virginia has been gaining some high praise as well. In February, The Loft placed third in the Coffee Fest’s east coast Best Coffee House competition in Atlanta. The 2015 competition featured coffee houses from Atlanta, Washington DC, Charlottesville, and Birmingham. The contest reenacted a real life coffee shop atmosphere, requiring baristas to prepare high quality drinks while answering in-depth queries from customers and maintaining a clean and professional environment. At the end of the competition, the three barista teams were praised by the judges for their excellent customer service, their teamwork, and the high quality of their drinks. February also marked the launch of Red Rooster’s new Milepost Coffee series, offering excellent coffees with unique flavor profiles that are often 100% traceable, but not necessarily certified organic or fair trade. The Milepost series is part of Red Rooster’s ongoing mission to source and roast the highest quality green coffee in the world. In March, two Red Rooster coffees were reviewed via blind tasting by the nationally recognized website Coffee Review, the worlds leading coffee guide run by coffee industry luminary Kenneth Davids. The Kenya Nyeri Ruarai was awarded 94 points while the Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Natural Processed Worka was awarded 92 points. Any score above 90 is considered excellent; no coffee has ever scored above 97 on Coffee Review. In 2015, Red Rooster plans to expand their wholesale operations to include supplying more cafe and restaurants in the Old Dominion, with comprehensive training programs and equipment sales. However, owner Haden Polseno-Hensley is adamant that the quality of coffee must never be sacrificed for the sake of growth. “Our reputation is built on constantly striving to roast the best coffee possible. That’s been our mission from day one, and it will continue to be what drives us.”

electric roaster, affectionately called the Red Rooster. Freshly engaged to be married, the two conscripted their childhood friends to help them renovate the back of Rose’s mother’s bookstore into a small coffee roastery and retail store. Today, the Floyd, VA based Red Rooster Coffee Roaster is one of Virginia’s premier Certified Organic coffee roasters. Red Rooster roasts only the highest quality organic coffee from around the world and packages it in our unique hand-printed bags. Every 12oz bag of Red Rooster Coffee is hand stamped with the Roasted On date to make certain our quality and freshness are unparalleled. Our mission is to provide our customers with the highest quality coffee while providing for the farmers who grow it. Purchasing organic coffees assures that farmers, their children, and the watersheds they drink from and plant crops on are kept free of dangerous pesticides. We also purchase Fair Trade coffee, Rain Forest Alliance coffee, Smithsonian Bird Friendly coffee, Cup of Excellence coffee, and direct relationship coffee whenever possible. As we grow, our goal is to begin directly purchasing coffee directly from farmers in order to ensure that they are paid an equitable amount for their product while encouraging and enabling higher quality coffee and transparent relationships between customers and farmers. While our mission begins with social conscience, our ultimate goal is to roast the highest quality coffee for our customers. After sample roasting and cupping, every coffee is roasted to a unique profile to ensure the maximum amount of flavor, complexity, aroma, and most importantly, the sugary sweetness that is the hallmark of Red Rooster coffee. Fire on the Mountain – FloydFest 14 The fires of creativity are burning brighter than ever at FloydFest, southwest Virginia’s premier outdoor music and arts festival that will take place July 22nd – 26th near Floyd at milepost 170.5 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Kicking off with a new “Fire on the Mountain” theme, FloydFest is roaring into its 14th year with a fully streamlined reinvention of its roots, celebrating the authenticity of the music, people, and setting that have sparked a music festival revolution. Located on a pristine, 80-acre plateau in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, FloydFest has created a limited-capacity event with an authentic atmosphere where fans can experience an unparalleled intermingling of music, scenery, community, and self-discovery. This year’s FloydFest turned inward for inspiration, going back to its early roots and embracing a family-centric vibe coveted by fans that have been with FloydFest since its humble beginnings. This is evidenced by a musical line-up featuring a healthy dose of FloydFest fan favorites from years past, including headliner Brandi Carlile, Trampled by Turtles, and Drive-By Truckers, among others. The full FloydFest 14 lineup is flushed out with a blend of Bluegrass, Americana, and Rock n’ Roll, including: Grace Potter and the Nocturnals ~ Brandi Carlile ~ Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell ~ Drive-By Truckers ~ Leftover Salmon ~ Trampled by Turtles ~ Lord Huron ~ Keller Williams’ Grateful Grass ~ The Chris Robinson Brotherhood ~ Shovels & Rope ~ First Aid Kit ~ Greensky Bluegrass ~ Keller Williams ~ Sam Bush Band ~ Trigger Hippy ~ The Devil Makes Three ~ Jerry Douglas Presents the Earls of Leicester ~ Peter Rowan’s Twang ‘An Groove ~ Nikki Bluhm & The Gramblers ~ The Oh Hellos ~ Jeff Austin Band ~ The Larry Keel Experience ~ Keller & The Keels ~ Sister Sparrow & the Dirty Birds ~ The Black Lillies ~ Rayland Baxter ~ Swampcandy ~ Rayland Baxter ~ Driftwood ~ Dark Side of the Mountain ~ Annabelle’s 14

The musical line-up will pave the way for an increasingly down home, community-centered atmosphere, featuring patron-led panel discussions, group outdoor activities, and evening s’mores sessions around the campfire. Based on patron feedback, the Global Village will be completely revamped to offer patrons a full-fledged camping experience with upgraded offerings, a café with continental breakfast, and evening song and campfire sessions. The main field will bring an even greater diversity of offerings than in years past, bringing back the much-beloved circus trapeze and fire performances, additions to the Healing Arts Village, an extensive Children’s Universe, and more than 100 unique artisans and crafters. Regional gourmet food trucks and concessions will also be on hand. FloydFest’s unique location in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains opens the door for a wide range of easily accessible outdoor activities. FloydFest fans can experience the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains with daily Osprey guided hikes along the Blue Ridge. The nearby Moon Stomper hiking trail offers a pristine setting for sunrise hikes, disc golf, and mountain bikers. Adrenaline junkies should check out the Belcher Mountain Beat Down, a 19mile guided mountain bike tour on a hand-built, single-track trail, featuring 1,600’ of elevation gain. Those seeking a more relaxing outdoor experience can book a tranquil paddling experience down the Little River, a gorgeous, undeveloped stretch of water in Floyd County. Information and sign-ups for all outdoor activities can be found at the on-site Outdoor Adventures tent.

FLOYD COUNTRY STORE HERITAGE OF THE COMMUNITY As the saying goes, if you blink, you just might miss Floyd altogether with its one traffic light. The founding of Floyd County occurred in 1831 when it was named after John Floyd, who was the Governor of Virginia at that time. Floyd seems like any of the hundreds of other small towns that dot the Southwestern Virginia countryside; yet it sets itself apart with its forward thinking, but traditional ways of life. The true heart of Floyd is the music traditions of generations’ long gone, dating back several centuries, mostly to Scot-Irish settlers. Music has been prevalent in both family and community alike in this Appalachia region. Both locals and visitors may experience the music of this region at the Friday Night Jamboree held at The Floyd Country Store! Various genres can be heard, like old-time, gospel, blues, bluegrass, and traditional folk. From listening to the picking of the banjo, to the upbeat tunes of the fiddle, to plucking of the bass; you won’t be able to stop your feet from tappin’. The Floyd Country Store was originally called Farmers Supply, opening in 1910 and continues serving the community to present day. Over the years, it has changed ownership from a hardware store to a general store until the 1990s. In the late nineties, the store began staying open one night a week for what is now known as the famous Friday Night Jamboree. In 2007, the store went through a restoration to its original function of a retail space with a café and music became more of an intricate part of the store’s tradition. The most recent change in store ownership occurred in November, 2014 when after owning the store for the past ten years; the Crenshaws handed over the reins to Floyd locals, Dylan Locke and Heather Krantz. Speaking for both Krantz and himself, Locke said that they appreciate the Crenshaws and will continue their work, “to serve the community, to honor the music, the culture, the dance, the people, the scene, the vibe. All of that needs to be kept intact. And if we can do slight adjustments to make it more awesome, and if it’s working for everyone, that’s great.” The Friday Night Jamboree operates all year long, and in the summer, the music spills into the streets. Walking down Locust Street, one hears music being piped out of speakers from the Country Store. Musicians are found along street corners, in the barber shop, and even a few in the park. But the real fun is inside the Country Store where on the dance

18

www.Facebook.com/FloydMagazine

floor, you will find couples waltzing or square dancing, clogging or flat footing with the excited crowd pulsing to the rhythm of the music. Music is the cornerstone of the Country Store and if you happen to miss out on the Friday Night Jamboree, it can also be enjoyed both Saturday and Sunday at the Americana Afternoon where you can listen to an OldTime Jam, a Bluegrass Jam, or other special musical events. On the second and fourth Tuesday nights of each month, you can listen to the Open Shape Note Singing Group. Shape Note is a unique singing tradition, dating back to early America. The term “shape note” comes from the notation as the notes are written with different shapes: triangle, square, diamond as well as circle. Singers sit facing each other and sing in four voice parts forming a “hollow square.” This helps singers to sight read tunes. Unaccompanied by music, they sing hymns and anthems in a style that is often loud and raw. It is a participatory practice, not framed as a performance. The first Saturday of the month from September through May is the Floyd Radio Show. This not to be missed old-timey variety show features original radio plays, comedy bits, ads, jingles, music and more. The show is hosted by Elizabeth LaPrelle and Anna Roberts-Gevalt and also features special guests. The show is deeply rooted in the county of Floyd which provides endless inspiration to the aspects of the show. When visiting Floyd, the Country Store is a place for locals and visitors alike to get a feel for the heritage of the community. It is a place where old traditions carry on and new traditions are made. It is an intricate part of the community and the new owners are thrilled to be a part of it. “We are honored and heartened to have the opportunity to be the next stewards of The Floyd Country Store,” Locke and Krantz said in a joint statement. “We have a deep respect for the people, the music and the culture that makes the Floyd Country Store such a vibrant part of the community.” Floyd County Store (540) 745-4563 206 S Locust St, Floyd, VA 24091 www.floydcountrystore.com Jackie Crenshaw & Heather Krantz

After stepping out of the hot tub, toweling off and showering, we were kneaded and rubbed during a 75-minute couple’s massage. Afterwards, we ‘floated’ to our quiet room to rest. I’d like to say I fell into a deeply meditative state, but my girlfriend said all I did was snore. In all honesty, I haven’t felt this released of all my cares and worries since I was 12.” The Wellness Center, B&B, and Yoga Studio are conveniently located 20 minutes from I-81 and 7 minutes from the one and only traffic light in the town of Floyd. Second Chance Prom & Floyd County Fair Relocate to Chantilly Farm It’s no secret that Chantilly Farm, a special events venue and campground located on Franklin Pike in Floyd County, has seen rapid growth in recent years. That growth continues as two locally based events have made plans to formally relocate to this new site during the 2015 event season. One of Floyd County’s most popular summertime charity events, The Second Chance Prom, is hosting prom-goers at the new barn-style indoor facility at Chantilly Farm. Scheduled for Saturday, June 20th, participants are given a unique opportunity to re-live the experience of a traditional high school prom while raising funds, which are then donated to charities within Floyd County. It is hoped that the move to Chantilly will allow for growth and more visibility for the event and the charities that are helped. Another event of the fall in Floyd County, the Floyd Livestock and County Fair, will also relocate to the new Chantilly Farm venue, in an effort to grow beyond the current constraints of its location. This annual event will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2015 from 10am until 7pm. “Our fair began at the Floyd Recreation Park—went to the Virginia Cooperative Extension parking lot, and now in our 9th year, we’re excited to have the opportunity to host the fair at Chantilly Farm”, said Vickie Spangler, one of the event’s organizers. With acres of additional space, the event will feature a variety of new activities and exhibits. In anticipation of the move, organizers have appropriately chosen a theme for this year’s event, ‘Bringin’ it Back to the Farm’. Planned activities will include an Ag-Olympics, cake walks, livestock shows, educational exhibits, children activities, live music, and more. “One of the major goals of the Floyd Livestock & County Fair is to highlight and promote the role of agriculture in our community. Holding the 2015 Floyd Livestock & County Fair at Chantilly Farm allows us room to grow and expand while providing a gorgeous rural backdrop,” commented Stephanie Slocum of the Farm Bureau Women’s Committee.

24

www.Facebook.com/FloydMagazine

“Having a county fair has always been something I have felt would be wonderful for our county. The fair is such a wonderful opportunity to involve our youth in activities such as animal showmanship, producing and displaying agricultural produce they have raised, or presenting crafts they’ve created,” added Spangler. Newly expanded camping facilities at Chantilly Farm will be available to those who are interested in spending the weekend with family or friends. And the new indoor facilities at Chantilly Farm will serve as exhibit space for the fair. Betty Blackwell, Women’s Committee Chairman remarked, “Having worked with organizing the fair over the past 8 years, I have seen it grow and have enjoyed watching children, parents, friends, and grandparents learn from the activities provided at the fair. Parking and exhibit space has been challenging in the past, but the change in venue will solve so many of those logistical problems.” Jason Gallimore, the venue’s Lead Promoter and Director of Marketing said, “We’re very excited about the growing enthusiasm for what we’re doing at Chantilly Farm. From weddings and reunions to large festivals and community events, it really is the perfect venue for so many different types of events. With the newly added infrastructure for RV and tent camping, the new indoor facility, and further development of trails at the location, we’re becoming more and more a relevant destination not only within Floyd County, but also on a regional level.” Other important events hosted at this new location include the annual Chantilly Farm Bluegrass & BBQ Festival and Floyd Auto Fair. For more information on upcoming events, or to learn about camping facilities and rentals, visit www.chantillyfarm.com or call (540)353-5898.

Joshuas HOPE Alumni Games More Than a Fundraiser Three generations of former and future Floyd County basketball players gathered at FCHS on Saturday, April 4th to celebrate the 8th annual FCHS Basketball Alumni Games (Joshua’s Hoops for HOPE). The event has been running since 2008, which is the year following the Samefight movement which supported three children in Floyd who were diagnosed with cancer within four months of each other. Each of the children involved, Chance Harman, Joshua Cantrell, and Cassidy Foster, had significant ties to basketball in the county. Harman’s father is the boys’ basketball coach, Cantrell’s father and grandfather coach the girls’ basketball team, and Foster’s father is a VHSL referee. Each family honors the memory of their child in a way that gives back to the community. Since Cantrell’s parents and grandparents are all current or former teachers in the county, they felt led to establish a scholarship in Joshua’s name which is commonly known by the acronym, Joshua’s HOPE (Helping Out by Promoting Education). To date, over 23 scholarships in the amount of $3,000 each have been awarded to FCHS graduating seniors as a result of Joshua’s HOPE fundraising events. Though all family members contribute to both events, each event highlights the talents of family and the interests of Joshua. The Alumni Games are hosted by Cantrell’s paternal side of the family. The annual concert (held on the weekend following Labor Day) is dubbed “High Noon for HOPE” and features Joshua’s maternal grandfather’s local band, “High Noon” and also various guest performers each year. The Cantrells acknowledge that fundraising is only a part of the purpose

26

www.Facebook.com/FloydMagazine

of the Joshua’s HOPE events. And “Fun”-raising, as they like to call it, is an equally important part of their mission-- providing events that are enjoyable for the community who supported them during a tragic season in their life and to help celebrate the life of their son. Each year, Hoops for HOPE brings back over 70 former Buffaloes to compete on the hardwood. The most senior players hail from classes as early as ’66 and ’67, while the youngest are as recent as the current year’s graduating class. Event coordinator, Travis Cantrell tries to keep the event safe and competitive by offering open gyms for participants in the few weeks leading up to the event. The returning men, including members of the ’97 state championship team combine to form four squads in two typically close matches. The women’s game is also a crowd favorite, uniting women from state championship teams from ’93, ’94, ’08, and ’13. This year’s Alumni Games also featured the addition of kids’ co-ed games, which brought in 60 new Buffalohopefuls as young as the class of 2026. Always held on the Saturday prior to Easter, the event is a reunion of players young and old, from near and far, who share in common, the special bond of wearing the black and gold with pride. Setting an example for younger generations, the value of teamwork and pride, in efforts placed together-- whether through athletic play or through “pitching in” to pull it off--is what makes this effort a very unique one. As one former player put it, “Once a Buffalo, always a Buffalo” and that’s what the Floyd “team” is all about! Conect with us at www.samefight.org

Floyd Wines Gaining Recognition Virginia is the up and coming wine country of the east coast and has already gained quite a bit of traction as such. Chateau Morrisette is proud to play a role in that growth and to put Floyd on the Virginia Wine Country map. This year Virginia wines started on a good note as Chateau Morrisette, a Floyd winery, was recognized in several national and international wine competitions all over the country. “Wine competitions are a great way for winemakers to learn how others perceive their wines and for customers to learn from a third party which wines are worth the price,” says Brian Cheeseborough, Oenologist at Chateau Morrisette. Shopping for wine can be a bit overwhelming, so wine reviews and wine competitions provide objective endorsements to assist wine consumers in choosing quality wines. When a wine is medaled, which in and of itself is a stellar accomplishment, winning gold or double gold in a wine competition allows not only bragging rights, but also gives a third party value on the wine that was entered. Since many of these competitions have thousands of wines from all over the world to judge, it is a great accomplishment if a wine is awarded a gold medal or better. While judging is an imperfect science, those trained to judge usually provide a consistent rating. However, most everyone knows that taste and smell can be affected by space, time, and external influences. Does a wine taste the same in a loud bar with an after work crowd as it does when consumed during a romantic fireside dining experience? The same is true when a wine is judged. Chateau Morrisette recently announced some of the awards received from various competitions the first part of this year. Two awards are the prestigious San Diego International Wine Competition and the San Francisco Chronicle’s Wine Competition. Those competitions were followed by other big wins at the TexSom International Wine Competition (Dallas, TX), The Winemaker Challenge International Wine Competition, The Rosé Competition (Sonoma, CA), and the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition (New York). At the 2015 San Diego International Wine Competition, Chateau Morrisette’s 2012 5 Red Grapes received 94 points, was named Best of Class, and received a platinum award among hybrid reds. Our Dog Blue received 95 points and also won a platinum award. In order to receive a platinum award in this competition, every judge had to award the wine

28

www.Facebook.com/FloydMagazine

with a gold medal. The 2013 Nouveau Chien received a nod with 87 points as well as a silver medal. The Director of the San Diego International Wine Competition, Robert Whitley, spoke highly of the wines in the Creators Syndicate Wine Talk when he commented, “ Chateau Morrisette struck a blow…with a platinum award and score of 94 points for its 2012 5 Red Grapes, a proprietary blend of Bordeaux grapes combined with the hybrid Chambourcin. Virginia is moving up in the wine world and Chateau Morrisette is one reason for that.” The Winemaker Challenge proved to be another great competition for Chateau Morrisette. In The Winemaker Challenge each wine is evaluated in a blind tasting and by a professional winemaker. Needless to say, Cheeseborough was proud of the results given by his colleagues. His blend of Our Dog Blue received a double gold, while 4 White Grapes and 5 Red Grapes were both awarded gold medals. Silver medals were awarded to Chateau Morrisette’s rosé, Vin Gris, and 2013 Chardonnay Reserve. The new Provence style rosé, Vin Gris, also received a gold award from The Rosé Competition at Simi Winery in Sonoma, CA. This competition was specific to only judging North American rosé and only 22 other rosé’s were awarded gold out of the 192 wines entered. The Finger Lakes International Wine Competition medaled every Chateau Morrisette wine that was entered. Sweet Mountain Apple received a gold while Our Dog Blue, Sweet Mountain Laurel, Red Mountain Laurel, 4 White Grapes and 5 Red Grapes all received silvers. All of these wines retail for $15 or less, so customers will know that they are getting a quality Virginia wine for a great price. Receiving such glowing accolades from these competitions has sparked an interest in Chateau Morrisette wines among distributors throughout the Mid-Atlantic States. Distribution in Tennessee expanded last year to include Nashville, Knoxville, and Chattanooga. A new partnership with a Kentucky distributor was announced in early 2015 and plans are underway to expand into South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida in the near future. This expansion is good for both Floyd and Virginia. “In 2015, as we continue to expand our retail distribution, Chateau Morrisette is poised to reach our highest production levels to date,” comments Cheeseborough. This growth is putting more Floydians to work and also bringing more visitors to the area. In fact,

Spring/Summer 2015

Virginia wines are gaining more space on retail shelves and more wine drinkers are discovering the delights of Virginia wines. It is wonderful to be recognized within your own state, but it’s even better to be recognized all over the country and in particular in California competitions where wine is so well established. Every one of these competitions is a significant win not only for Chateau Morrisette, but for Floyd County as well. With its unsurpassed musical heritage, bucolic vistas at every turn, the timeless Blue Ridge Mountains, and a number of excellent wineries, Floyd County is a wonderful place to call home. An Emerging Artist Coriander Woodruff and her family discovered Floyd twelve years ago, when she was eight years old. During Coriander’s youth, the artists in town helped develop her creativity, especially the Jacksonville Center, where she took classes on painting, pottery, and glass blowing. Coriander also earned the distinction of being the youngest teacher at the Jacksonville Center, when she taught a class on building fairy houses at just 11 years of age. Her creativity took many twists and turns and when she was fourteen, Coriander used the computer to create two albums of electronica music, “Spirit Web” and “Black Light, Blue Frog.” These are available at the local music store, noteBooks on S. Locust Street. However, the gift of a digital camera around age 16 became the catalyst for her future career as a photographer. Coriander honed her skill with the camera through private photography lessons with a Radford college teacher, Dr. Parv Sethi. Dr. Sethi summed the experience up with, “I don’t think I have ever seen someone as young, be as good with a camera as her.” Since turning 18, Coriander has completed two years of commercial photography with Life Touch Photography in Annapolis, MD, as well as conducted artistic and commercial photo shoots. One of her most exciting projects to date was a private photo shoot with the musician, Amanda Palmer, formerly of the Dresden Dolls and now an independent musician who has performed all around the world. She has also photographed the famous sci-fi writer, Neil Gaiman, author of Stardust and Coraline which were both made into movies. Now at age 20, Coriander Woodruff is one of the few up-and-coming artists selected to be in the New Voice Exhibit at the Jacksonville Center (JAX). The Jacksonville Center description states, “The vision of the New Voice exhibit is to showcase regional emerging artists, pulled from area colleges and local talent, with enough space to exhibit a body of work while offering the community a unique look into contemporary creativity.” The photographic work that Coriander Woodruff selected to display at the JAX, combines her love of mythologic themes and fairy tales, with the underlying message of feminine beauty and strength that she sees in the reality of her generation. Coriander stated, “Photography is my language... I use it to show the beauty I see in the world... I use it to make a stand on what I believe...” Coriander’s slightly surrealistic body of work, bridges the distance between lore and reality, with images ranging from playful to spectral, it encompasses the mysterious nature of the faerie tale world. Although Coriander can get very ethereal effects with her camera, it is all done during the process of taking the photo. Coriander said, “I use little to no photoshop, my rule of thumb is if I could easily do it in the dark room, then I will do it with my photo editing program.” Her photography will be on display at the Jacksonville Center from April 3rd to May 23rd of 2015. Another exciting art project that Coriander Woodruff, along with two other creative artists, Barb Baur and Patricia Robin Woodruff are involved

in, is an installation art exhibit called “Thru The Lens” at the Old Church Gallery in Floyd. Installation art is a genre of art that is three-dimensional, incorporating the viewer and transforming their perspective of a space. This exhibit was inspired by the Woodruff family inheriting the largest collection of film cameras in the United States which belonged to the eccentric collector, Jack MacCracken. In this case, the artists will take a portion of the 3,000 cameras and completely cover the walls and surround the viewer with cameras, as if they were the center of attention of thousands of paparazzi. “Thru The Lens” will question our reasons and our relationship with capturing images. The point of view is probed from the perspective of both the photographer and the one being photographed through MacCracken’s cameras. The collection fills the entire exhibit room of the gallery and appears to be photographing the viewer who is viewing the cameras. The viewer is surrounded by vintage and modern cameras and becomes the subject of the click of the shutters during intermittent flashes. The collection demonstrates the overwhelming and consuming passion of man. This will be the first time the Old Church Gallery in Floyd, VA is presenting this type of exhibit. The exhibit can be viewed from mid-April to the end of May at Old Church Gallery, 110 Wilson Street, Floyd, VA which is open Fridays from 2 to 5 pm and Saturdays from 10 am to 1 pm.

Other exhibits at the Jacksonville Center include: Curated Exhibition: “Rhythms of Glass:” May 30 – July 25, 2015. This will focus solely on glass as a medium for creativity. “Rhythms of Glass” will feature artists working in the style of stained, fused, cast, blown, and flame-worked glass within the Virginia and/ or the National Capital region. Opening reception will be held on Saturday, May 30th with a performance afterwards. 2015 Juried Exhibition: July 31 – September 26, 2015. The Jacksonville Center for the Arts is committed to hosting a juried exhibition every year, offering substantial cash prizes, and professional and public recognition for artists. The reception will be on Saturday, August 8th for this exhibit. The Jacksonville Center for the Artsis located just outside of town at 220 Parkway Lane South, Floyd, VA 24091. 16 Professional Artists The Floyd Artists Association is a grass-roots co-op comprised of 16 professional artists and two students. Their gallery is located across from the Floyd Country Store in The Station. In fact, at the front desk, you’ll always find one of the artists. In the past year, many of the FAA artists have been award winners and published artists. Some of the exciting awards in the past year have been: Karen Sewell, a founding member of the Floyd Artists Association who was born in Floyd County, won a purchase award at Expressions 2014 held at the Piedmont Arts Center in Martinsville, VA. Her painting is now in the permanent collection of one of the businesses of the area. In 2014, Patricia Robin Woodruff was invited to be in the Thrive Evolutionary Consciousness magazine. Since many of her art themes and writing touch on love and spirituality, it fit in perfectly with the focus of the magazine. Her painting, “Enfolded” was published along with her poetry, “Valentine Sonnet.” She also illustrated and designed the cover for Naked Morsels; Short Stories of Spiritual Erotica, by Robin Rumi. Woodruff is a founding member of the Floyd Artists Association. Marsha Slopey Paulekas, another founding member of FAA, won second place on her first attempt at the Paradise Paint Out, Quick Draw in January of 2015. This was hosted at a private estate in Islamorada, Florida, where professional Plein Air artists had only two hours to complete an oil painting, which was then judged. Paulekas enjoys painting the out of doors and has many oil paintings at FAA that were painted on site in the Blue Ridge Mountains. At the end of 2014, Starroot (aka, Ruth Neumann) displayed her work, “Magic Dino Playing Cello” at the Glencoe Museum and Gallery in Radford, Virginia. The Glencoe Museum is known for exhibiting the art and works of contemporary Appalachian 34

artists. Starroot also has her artwork in the permanent collection of the Baltimore Museum of Visionary Art in Baltimore, Maryland which is a testament to her unique contribution to Contemporary Visionary Art. Another FAA artist, Paula R. Melton was invited to be a featured artist at Heartwood in Abingdon, Virginia. Heartwood is a large artisan center that showcases the best of crafts and art work in Southwest Virginia. It is known as the “gateway” to Southwest Virginia which features galleries, a restaurant, and performance spaces. Melton is known for her detailed watercolor paintings. Cindy Howe’s beautiful painting, “Canyons” took Third Place in the 39th Annual J.E.B. Stuart Art Show held in Patrick County, Virginia. She is an accomplished artist specializing in painting with alcohol inks on Yupo (a type of plastic paper). It is a difficult technique and takes a lot of practice to be able to control the very fluid medium and coax out a picture, but it is this variability that makes such dramatic results. Howe has also painted tiles and necklaces in this medium at the Floyd Artists Association. We invite you to stop by to see the work of such accomplished and recognized Floyd artists! The Floyd Artists Association is located in The Station across from the Floyd Country Store, 203 South Locust Street, Floyd, VA. For more information, please visit our website at www.FloydArtists.com. Patricia Robin Woodruff is an author and artist. She has published “Strange Tales of Floyd, VA”, a collection of ghost stories, UFO sightings and other Fortean experiences in Floyd. The book is available at The Floyd Country Store, noteBooks and soon to be released thru Amazon. Follow her blog on creativity at www.innerartspirit.wordpress.com

Family owned and operated with quality you can trust

Fencing is more than the construction of something to “hold in” livestock, pets or whatever the case may be. A proper fence is artwork in its own way. If properly built, a fence will enhance the appearance of your property and increase its value. A fence that we build is something you will be proud to look at. The reason we build fences is because, at the end of the day, we can see something more than just a fence. We can see beauty in the way it lays and flows with the land. We know it will be built right and we won’t be the only ones who will be proud of it. We give thanks to the Lord for the work, for the ability and for the opportunity to help our clients.

Five Mile Mountain Distillery The first legal moonshine distillery since prohibition will be opening in Floyd County this summer. Called Five Mile Mountain Distillery, it is named after the one lane road that winds up onto Five Mile Mountain and connects both Franklin and Floyd County. The distillery will be bringing legal moonshine to the area; like its namesake did before. This craft micro distillery will be using the same old recipes as their predecessors and using traditional copper stills on open flames. They will be keeping a true Appalachian tradition alive by bottling up two local recipes of clear and elderberry flavored moonshine. In the future, plans are to branch out with more distinctive flavors and aged whiskies. The distillery will offer tours as well as tastings with the option to purchase Floyd County moonshine at the distillery. History of the Distillery Building... A unique part of Five Mile Mountain Distillery is the building itself which began its life as the Floyd County Public Service Authority (PSA) and was built just after the end of World War II. The building pumped water from Dodds Creek, treated it, and sent it on to the town’s water tower, where it was then gravity fed to businesses and residences in Floyd. As the town grew, wells were drilled to facilitate the increasing need for water and in 1976 the old water works building was closed. It remained vacant and deteriorated slowly until July of 2013 when it was purchased and repurposed for the distillery. With lots of grit and determination, life was brought back into this beautiful old structure. Renovating this rustic building was a very odd task as it involved the removal of thousands of gallons of water, thousands of pounds of steel and cast iron pipe, and very old and hardened concrete. However, the Five Mile Mountain Distillery owners feel as though all their hard work was well worth it to save such a unique piece of Floyd’s history. For more information on Five Mile Mountain Distillery visit www.5milemountain.com Cheers!

This is the home of yet another quality event, the Floyd Yoga Jam! Imagine stretching your body to its limits, playing in the great outdoors all day, fueling up on amazing local food creations, and then spending the evening jammin’ to great, upbeat, eclectic music. This unique outdoor event attracts musical artists, yoga teachers, healers who practice many healing modalities, artisans with handmade items, friends, neighbors and visitors every Labor Day weekend to a small farm, hidden in the lush Blue Ridge Mountains of Willis, Virginia for live music, storytelling, and yoga classes. Great endeavors require untold amounts of love, devotion and passion in addition to hard work if they are to become a successful reality, the Floyd Yoga Jam is no exception. From the moment of inception, this festival has been a full time creative project for Dancin’ Dakinis Productions and has involved the whole community. “Labor of Love” was chosen for the 2015 theme to symbolize the cooperative spirit and synergy that is the Floyd Yoga Jam. “The YOJam would not be ramping up for its 4th year if it were not for the incredible love and support of our community,” explained Laura Polant, co-producer of the event, along with Shirleyann Burgess. “Everyone has been rooting for us to succeed. Friends have volunteered endless hours and the county has been incredibly helpful as well. We are truly happy to be able to present the best ever Floyd Yoga Jam this year.” The Yoga Jam blends local Americana traditions with eclectic indie pop and inspirational kirtan genres within the timeless soundtrack of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Musical guests for 2015 are a mixture of past favorites and new acts. Trevor Hall rejoins the YOJam with his incredible voice and uplifting lyrics. The Art Village with daily programming in the arts will be enjoyed by the adults. 16 Hands Spring Studio Tour 16 Hands, a collective of artists from the Blue Ridge Mountains, will hold their spring tour in scenic Floyd County on the weekend of May 2nd and 3rd. This bi-annual tour, held during Thanksgiving weekend in the fall and also every spring on the first weekend in May, began as a means for members of the group to not only share their knowledge and talents with each other but also to build relationships within the community which supports them. As a result, members of 16 Hands open their studios and homes to the public, providing an opportunity to showcase their artwork and also allowing an authentic glimpse into their lives and inspirations. “We really want to create an experience for people that extend beyond the objects that we make. The tour is a great opportunity for us to connect with people, to tell our stories, and share what we do in a way that creates a memorable experience for people.” says 16 Hands member Josh Copus, who grew up in Floyd, Virginia and returns home from Asheville, NC, to do the tour twice a year. In addition to viewing the work of the six member artists, tour goers have the opportunity to interact with guest artists from all over the country. “We really feel that having guest artists on the tour keeps it fresh and interesting. Featuring rotating artists with a variety of mediums helps the tour appeal to all types of people.” says Copus. This spring, 16 Hands is hosting four exciting visiting artists: 1--Kyle Carpenter, who is showing with Copus, makes saltfired pottery that blends the traditions of North Carolina folk pottery with contemporary design and graphic decoration to create work that is both beautiful and engaging. 2--Elisa Di Feo, who is showing with Brad Warsler and Ellen Shankin, is a former 16 Hands apprentice who has recently 42

www.Facebook.com/FloydMagazine

returned to Floyd to set up a studio and raise a family. She makes simple designed functional pottery that draws elements from the human body and visual ergonomics of food service. 3--James Barnes, from Woolwine, is another local artist who is joining the tour this year and will be showing with Silvie Granatelli. Barnes is a wood turner who specializes in exotic inlay work and wood cloisonné to create his exquisite vessels. 4—Returning member Stacey Snyder is a former member who is showing with Rick Hensley and Donna Polseno. Stacey makes pottery inspired by landscape and architecture that seeks to heighten an awareness of time and elevate an experience of place. The spring tour is also a great opportunity to visit Floyd for the weekend. Floyd has long been home to a community of creative people, from early pioneers and farmers. The county has always been known as an area rich in cultural heritage, with a strong history of old-time music and crafts. The foundation of self-sufficiency that gave rise to Floyd’s creative history has been further enhanced by an influx of new people looking to live closer to the land, to build a unique contemporary community that blends together an old-time feeling with fresh ideas about sustainability and a locally based economy. Copus says, “I really love what’s happening in Floyd. It’s growing in a really positive way. It seems like there is a real strong emphasis on buying local and developing a strong community around that and that’s what our tour is all about. It’s a really good match.” For more information or directions, please visit www.16hands.com.

ORGANIC COTTON CLOTHING HAS BEEN MADE IN FLOYD SINCE 2004 It has been over ten years since we first conceived of Green Label Organic: Sustainable Threads as an organic cotton clothing line. Our mission from the start was to produce super soft, super comfortable, certified organic cotton clothing and to design and manufacture the entire line in America, and if possible in Floyd, VA. We’d like to think we were a little ahead of the curve back then, before the word “GREEN” was synonymous with all things environmental, eco friendly, sustainable, healthy, and positive. Before we knew it, the word “GREEN” had taken on a life of its own. Our plan from the beginning was to use our organic cotton T-shirts as a platform to deliver positive eco conscious messages with a touch of humor and sincerity and we were definitely in the right place at the right time. Since then, through our designs and messaging, we have had the joy of championing many of the important issues of the day: environmentalism, conscious consumption of all things, supporting local economies, supporting American ideals, and most of all respecting our planet, labor and ourselves. This year we have doubled up on our commitment to “support local.” We took a leap of faith and totally remodeled our warehouse building here in Floyd. We now have a dedicated fun and funky retail space to highlight not only our own organic cotton clothing, but lots of other cool brands

that are locally made. We also, offer other artisan goods made in America which have a positive story around them. One of our new favorite brands is called Harmony Acres Soap Co., made by Dale and Corey Emmons and their 10 children in Hays, North Carolina. These beautiful, yet simple handcrafted soaps and lotions are from ingredients such as 100% unrefined organic shea butter. They use only the finest natural ingredients and all soaps and lotions are paba and palm oil free. Also, we are now featuring Maruca hand bags, wallets and accessories which are all originally designed styles… even the textiles are made in America! New brand names and interesting new items are constantly being added to our retail space. So, if you’re looking for something special that also supports your own values, check out our organic cotton T-shirts, tops and clothing for men, women and children, and our unusual gifts, all at outlet store prices. We hope you’ll come on down and look around as we’re a fun place to spend some quality time and to shop local. The Goose Is Loose! What do bluegrass, rocking-chairs, supper, and square dancing have in common? If you said, they’re all part of an awesome night, you’re right. But did you ever think they could be part of church? Wild Goose Christian Community is a brand new non-traditional worship community in Floyd County where they’ve exchanged pews for rockers, organs for fiddles, and yawns for songs. And they’re just getting started! All over America, little country churches are locking their doors and selling their property. They have grown too small, too old, and too tired to keep going. Many of these churches are following the path of the small communities they serve and are simply dying out, but in Indian Valley, just the opposite is happening. The little white church on Macks Mountain Road was heading down the same path and in fact, closed its doors in 2012 and stood empty for almost a year. There was talk of selling it, but God seemed to have other ideas. Now, every Tuesday evening at 6:30, folks gather to share a potluck supper, celebrate the Lord’s Supper, sing, pray, discuss scripture, and sometimes square-dance. Wild Goose Christian Community began holding services (known as “Uprisings”) in the spring of 2013. Their goal was simple: to celebrate God’s presence in creation, to honor the culture of Appalachia, and to provide a Christ-centered community, especially for those who are not drawn to a traditional church. Consequently, the pews have been replaced with a circle of rocking chairs and the performer/audience atmosphere has been eliminated and replaced with a much more inclusive participatory setting. In place of the pulpit, stands a stone fireplace that creates a cozy welcoming feel to the gathering. Communion is served in mason jars and gospel songs are accompanied by banjos and guitars. And everyone is involved in preaching the sermon, sharing ideas about scripture and its relevance to their daily lives. Wild Goose draws people from Floyd, Hillsville, Radford, Blacksburg, and even a few from as far away as Roanoke. Many of those who attend claim their worship begins on the drive out to Indian Valley. The weekly “Uprisings” provide a retreat from the

48

www.Facebook.com/FloydMagazine

hectic pace of life and restores church members’ relationship with their Appalachian heritage. They also provide reconnection with the beauty of creation and the blessings of Christian fellowship. One member of the Wild Goose family puts it this way, “The services at Wild Goose create space for quiet prayer, space for individual contemplation, and space for learning from others in the group in a God focused worship service. There is so much joy and laughter, so much community and at the same time, such a sense of sacredness. It has made me excited about church again.” Some folks come for the food, others for the fellowship. Some love the music and many are drawn to the casual and participatory worship style of Wild Goose. Another regular attendee says, “I’m challenged and sometimes perplexed by the discussions, which isn’t a bad thing at all. The scriptures can be hard. Understanding their relevance can be fascinating, frustrating, and illuminating. I believe that considering these things is part of my journey of faith, and being on that journey with others at Wild Goose makes it more satisfying. The experience makes for a great family conversation on the ride home, which I cherish!” Wild Goose is changing the way folks think about church in Southwestern Virginia, but its influence doesn’t stop there. The worshiping community has been featured in several national publications, has been part of an internationally distributed video series, and was the subject of an award-winning National Public Radio article. The way we “do” church in America is beginning to change and Wild Goose is an important part of this new movement, especially in rural America. So come on out for an unconventional, but inspiring worship service infused with bluegrass, old-time and Celtic music, and see what all the excitement’s about. During Adventure Hobbies, Science Hacks & the Natural World week, we present the real world off-line with special guest appearances and activities by Adventure Hobbies of Christiansburg, the Robotics Club, and the Chemistry Club. Adventure - Boot Camp is our Flagship session and a week that makes me extra proud of our kids. Campers can expect to be happy and tired by the end of the day because we have a Monster Obstacle Course which is twice the size of the one in 2014! By the end of the week, campers will be stronger, faster, smarter, and more confident. Throughout the year, the majority of a child’s time is spent in passive thrall of a computer or video screen. We believe it is important to stimulate children to think critically, creatively, and to get them up and moving. Connections Youth Camp is a safe place for a child to 50

Wildwood Farms General Store Welcome to Wildwood Farms General Store! We are a store with a two-acre daylily garden just 5 miles south of Floyd on Rt. 221. We are well worth the short drive as we are your one stop shop for gardening, live music, great food, home décor, and some really unique gift items. Come on by and shop, enjoy a delicious sandwich, and relax on our patio with a wonderful view of our garden and daylilies. Our General Store was opened in 2013 and offers a wide selection of home and garden décor. Inside the store, you’ll find “Mama’s Pantry” which includes fresh produce and canned goods. We also offer bulk candy, old-fashioned candy, dried beans, country ham, hoop cheese, and Virginia grown peanuts. We have a good variety of jams, jellies, pickles, and other canned goods which are canned right here in Virginia. Last year, “George’s Kitchen” opened with a menu that includes a variety of sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza, BBQ, as well as handdipped Hershey’s ice cream. The store and kitchen are open seven days a week. We grow around 1,500 varieties of daylilies, offering 600 of the varieties for sale each year. We are one of the largest commercial daylily gardens in the state! We invite you to wander through our beautiful gardens and choose your favorites flowers. We will dig them up for you to take home, or if you prefer, we can ship your plants to you. The biggest challenge for most people is selecting which plants they want because of our huge variety. We are happy to assist you. Just tell us your favorite color or colors, and where you will be planting the daylilies, and we will help you with a plan for your own home garden. Not only do we have a general store and gardens, but back when we built the store, we added a stage to be able to offer musical performances and also a venue to host meetings or classes. We also have a large parking area that can accommodate buses and groups. Please call us for information and reservations. We also have a grassy area beside the store which we use for our “Cruise-ins” and our yearly “Old Timey Fest.” When we have our cruise-ins, we have a great showing of classic cars with a music jam on our “Picking Porch.” This year the “Old Timey Fest” will be held on Saturday, October 17th where we’ll have antique tractors, antique cars, craft and yard sale setups, woodworking, apple butter, and other interesting demonstrations. Mountain Fever Studios Mountain Fever Studios, Inc. is a state of the art recording studio hidden in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Floyd, Virginia. Acoustic music is the specialty of the house and people will drive right through the city of Nashville just to come here. It’s obvious why they drive the extra miles because once in the studios, it is easy to see and to hear. Aaron Ramsey of Mountain Heart fame, is the production manager and head engineer. The pristine tones he obtains while recording, speak for themselves and why people will make the extra effort to record at the studio. Mountain Fever Studios is also the parent corporation of two international record labels. Mountain Fever Records is a nationally acclaimed Bluegrass Record Label now in its seventh year. It has garnered multiple IBMA award nominations along with more than a dozen #1 records and over twenty five #1 songs. Its sister label, Travianna Records, was started one year ago and already has produced four charting records with plans to double the current roster in 2015. Together, the two labels provide a catalog of more than 54 titles and growing every month. Their roster includes some of the top names in the acoustic and bluegrass world such as: Volume Five, The Crowe Brothers, Adkins & Loudermilk, The Spinney Brothers, Mountain Faith, Breaking Grass, Detour, The Darrel Webb Band, Ash Breeze, After Jack, and Mustered Courage. Jubilee Design Nears Completion Floyd is a perfect home for Jubilee Cohousing and here are some reasons why: Floyd is a county that raises environmental awareness, shares and maintains precious community resources, offers a spectrum of educational and wellness services, supports local agriculture, and is economically diverse. We are planning the first all Passivhaus community in Virginia. Passivhaus is known as the world’s leading building energy efficiency standard. It is also a comfort standard with stringent indoor thermal comfort and ventilation requirements. We are serious about reducing our carbon footprint. Designs for our Passivhaus community are nearly complete, pricing is coming soon and we anticipate building 33 homes with a common house in 2016. Jubilee offers more without additional prices. A developer is not designing Jubilee, rather future residents are buying materials in bulk and holding the line on customization. We get to create the walkable, child-safe/ elder-safe neighborhood of our dreams and are capitalizing on the old fashioned village feel; clustering our homes around a green space. Think of easy play dates, community gardens, woodland trails, natural play areas, and a large common/club house. Our beautiful 38 acres will be more land than one family would want to maintain, but a paradise any family would love to call home. We are a classic cohousing community. We make the core benefits of an intentional community accessible to a broad segment of the population – namely the home-buying middle class. There are currently over 200 registered co-housing communities in the United States and many hundreds globally. We’re not an income-sharing community, an ashram, or a self-build Ecovillage. We are people who yearn for deeper connections with others, a sense of being part of a caring community, and a way of life that is more fulfilled and less consumptive than the typical middle-class lifestyle. We live in our own homes with our own religions, vocations, and politics. We cherish our children, our elders, and our privacy. We like to have fun and we welcome others to join us. In Jubilee, we are about people. We believe that building community comes first and that real estate development comes second. We are

carefully growing and expanding our community that will become our neighborhood, sharing the experience of cooperation and collaboration. We come together, strangers at first, and work on all the issues related to building our community as we form meaningful bonds and practice a respectful process rarely found in the corporate world. We try to make Floyd and the world a better place by creating a cooperative community thereby raising awareness and making long-term, grass-roots progress on issues of social, environmental, and economic sustainability. At Jubilee, there is a balance of private ownership mixed with elements for the good of the group. Can solutions to the widespread ills of our world begin in the context of one small, connected, interdependent community and spread beyond to benefit our broader human and environmental communities? We’d like to think so. We appreciate innovation and working with innovators. We see the ecological and economic/social problems in the world and we feel creatively challenged to find better, more lastingly satisfying ways of addressing those problems. Green Building Award winner, Adam Cohen of Structures Design Build, guided our designs. He will build super-energy-efficient Passivhaus private homes, as well as a 4,000 square Passivhaus common house where we can gather to play, work, and share meals. Project management is guided by consultants from Village Resources Cohousing Consultants in Blacksburg. We enjoy contributing to the broader Floyd community. Regionally, we volunteer at Plenty!, End of Life Development, St. Francis Service Dogs, the Historical Society, the Jacksonville Center, the June Bug Center, HeartSong Singers, Share the Care, at various churches, and as peer counselors. Call today to make an appointment to tour Jubilee, see the construction plans, and find out if we are the community you could call home. 540-250-1235. www.jubileecoho.com Article by Rosemary Wyman and Lisa Poley
