The Floyd Event Center A special place for that special event

The Floyd Event Center, located at the Floyd EcoVillage, has expanded its venue and lodging options for 2016. Two miles from the town of Floyd, the Event Center is close enough to enjoy Floyd, but far enough away that you hear nature instead of people. Located on the 75-acre Floyd Ecovillage site, the Floyd Event Center offers elegantly appointed indoor and outdoor spaces. Celebration Hall is the largest indoor space with a capacity of 150 dining style seats or 270 theatre-style seats. The Hall which is timber-framed with rustic, locally-sourced wood offers a stage, dance floor, state of the art lighting, sound, and projection systems. If you prefer to host your event outside, the patio stretches the length of the facility with a pavilion overlooking the pond and it can accommodate a larger group of up to 140 people. If your group is more intimate, the new garden wedding site can be set-up for 30 people and includes an arbor-drenched in wisteria during springtime. The event center is available for weddings, receptions, retreats, business events, parties, and offers a commercial kitchen, bridal dressing area, multiple meeting, and dining spaces. Tables, chairs and dishes are available on-site

and can be included in the rental price. Lodging at the Floyd Ecovillage is called “comfortable rustic.” There are seven rooms in the beamed lodge ranging from a 2bed/2bath suite to dorm rooms with 4 to 6 bunk beds. There are three cabins that offer the convenience of a tiny house, each with a private bathroom and kitchenette. The creek side campground has a bathhouse with hot showers and is available for those interested in sleeping under the stars. There is also a mile and a half of hiking trails available for exploring through the woods and a creek to splash-in for the kids. Wifi is available in some areas, but there are no TVs. As a special offer for a reader of the Floyd Magazine – the Floyd Event Center will offer a FREE Laurel Springs Percheron Carriage ride for the first couple who book and pay for a wedding at the Floyd Event Center and who mentions this article. Whether you are looking for the luxury and convenience of a full service facility or the beauty and charm of a venue in the woods, we have a space that will fit your needs. For more information about the Floyd Event Center or to schedule a visit, contact Maggie at 540-745-4434 or floydeventcenter@gmail.com or visit our website at www.floydeventcenter.com.

Chef Cooper

Chef Cooper Brunk Brings Appalachian French Fusion to Chateau Morrisette Savoring the Experience of Slow Food The Blue Ridge vibrantly unfolds in the spring, and Chateau Morrisette Winery and Restaurant, at milepost 171.5 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, renews itself with the same vibrancy. With new vintages coming out of the cellar and new dishes coming out of the kitchen, the winery and restaurant that has grown and flourished in Floyd County’s southern corner for over thirty years, greets 2016 in full bloom. The Winery’s Vin Gris rosé was the first vintage off the bottling line this year. Bottling is now in full swing, with twenty-two wines currently offered at their mountaintop tasting room. Having started as a local single estate winery, it’s only natural that Chateau Morrisette has embraced the budding farm to table movement in its restaurant offerings. Farm-to-Table Begins in the Ground Matt Sanders, Head Gardener for Chateau Morrisette, in close collaboration with Executive Chef Cooper Brunk, says that plans for this year’s kitchen and estate gardens will represent an evolutionary step forward from previous years. “The estate garden is a half-acre which is under active cultivation within the full acre plot,” says Head Gardener Sanders. “There are no synthetic applications to the garden aside from fertilizer. We use both organic mulches and plastic sheeting to prevent erosion and suppress weeds, which we complement with timed cultivation techniques to limit soil loss.” Marking his second year in the lead role of estate crop production, Sanders says that a year round approach brings benefits to the main growing season. He states that, “cover crops rotated into fallow space – including buckwheat, millet, and winter rye – condition the soil and support fertility, and daikon radishes help pull nutrients back up that have leached downward in the soil, to be used by the following years’ crops.” The estate garden is effectively protected by a ten-foot tall deer fence that would be the envy of many a Floyd gardener, but neither the estate garden nor the kitchen garden are immune to 8

www.Facebook.com/FloydMagazine

a pest well known to many Appalachian growers, the flea beetle. “Flea beetles typically don’t kill our greens, but they can affect the leaf presentation, which is important on the plate,” says Chef Sanders. “We can usually limit their effects to tolerable limits with extensive use of row covers. Even though the botanical controls we use like neem or pyrethrins break down quickly without residue, we still like to use them only when necessary.” Sander’s holistic approach in planning the garden embraces not only what goes into the soil, but the destination of the produce that comes out, the dining tables at Chateau Morrisette Restaurant. “Let the Dish Lead the Planting” Head Gardener Sanders is supporting Executive Chef Brunk’s intent to “let the dish lead the planting” by planting a greater variety of crops, with more successional plantings. This will keep ingredients and menus fresh throughout the season and provide manageable amounts for the kitchen staff to work with; though Sanders notes that previous years’ surpluses haven’t been wasted. “We sold corn and tomatoes locally and still managed to have some left over for local food banks.” While there will be some bulk staples grown that the restaurant will make frequent use of – onions, potatoes, winter squash, and leeks – the broader variety is evident in the gardener’s notebook: early spring carrots, radishes, turnips, broccoli, and cabbage, leading into later plantings including beets, kale, purple mizuna, and micro greens. Chef Brunk is excited to introduce to the estate garden, a crop that has only recently begun to be cultivated. The crop is a plant called kalette which is a traditionally bred (non-GMO) cross of kale and Brussels sprouts that grows tall and produces florets, like Brussels sprouts, but instead of producing tiny heads, the florets yield loose tufts of leaves. Brunk notes the flavor is less piquant than Brussels sprouts, but still richer than kale. Such a cross of flavors reflects the hybrid approach that the Chef is bringing to the Restaurant at Chateau Morrisette.

Spring/Summer 2016

Appalachian-French Fusion Chef Brunk joined Chateau Morrisette in October of last year bringing with him, training in classical French cuisine. He graduated with high honors from the Culinary School of the Rockies and has experience in fine restaurants in France, Colorado, and Tennessee. A past “Best Menu” winner for the Flavors of Nashville competition, he is the author of a specialty cookbook as well. Previously, he served as chef instructor, private chef, executive chef, and was the restaurant owner of Cooper’s on Porter in Nashville. Chef Brunk says his first menus at Chateau Morrisette, “were both training menus for the kitchen staff and transition menus for the restaurant’s loyal patrons.” Such a transition was necessary, he says so that his classical French influences could be sampled and appreciated without leaping too far from the more purely American Southern style which the restaurant had been known for. Using estate grown, local, and regional ingredients in his custom French dishes, Chef Brunk creates a style he says might best be described as “Appalachian-French fusion.” Chef Brunk is eager to point out that while the American Southern cuisine traces lineage from the French Provencal style, they are both deeply shaped by fresh, seasonal ingredients. In fact, his new menu, introduced in April, “really takes the menu up a notch” in creating a full range of French cuisine, from Provencal to haute. Such an array embodies the Chateau Morrisette identity of rustic elegance, with dishes like the crawfish ragout, showing off the more rustic influences, while “the beurre blanc sauce, served with tenderloin, and the foie gras fondue, are definitely dishes in the more refined French haute (high) style.”

Matt Sanders, Head Gardener

Inspiring Positive Vibes and Passion for Flavor High style leaves plenty of room for a human touch in Chef Brunk’s kitchen. He’s pleased to note that in his time here, he’s seen a refreshed kitchen crew building into a cohesive team. “There’s a positive feel in the kitchen, and those good moods translate to the food that comes to the table.” The connections among staff, guests, and the foods prepared and shared, as well as the land that nurtures the ingredients, are essential to this Appalachian-French fusion. Chef Brunk sees such connections throughout Chateau Morrisette Winery and Restaurant, and offers as an example, sous chef Rick Caviness, one of his kitchen staff whose commitment to honing his craft in the kitchen as well as lending a hand in the estate and kitchen gardens is inspiring. “It inspires passion to take care of your ingredients when you pull them out of the ground yourself,” says Chef Brunk.

The Covered Bridge 5K Run/Walk The Covered Bridge 5K Run/Walk made its debut in Woolwine, Virginia in 2011, and is held in conjunction with the Covered Bridge Festival on the third Saturday in June. Woolwine is located in the Smith River District of Patrick County, Virginia. The Covered Bridge 5K is open to the general public and begins just prior to the Covered Bridge Festival. Participants run or walk along a course that takes them through our only standing historical covered bridge and ends at the Smith River Church of the Brethren. (With the September 2015 flood that destroyed Bob White’s bridge, obviously the course will only take participants through just the one bridge this year.) The event is held as a fundraiser for a non-profit organization and typically attracts over 100 finishers, as well as many spectators. Our past history has shown that on an average, half of the finishers of the race are from outside Patrick County. “Women Caring for the Community” hosted the Covered Bridge 5K event from 2011-2014 as a fundraiser for its beneficiary organizations. Stuart Elementary Athletic Boosters hosted the run as their fundraiser last year and will continue as the host this year. We continue to attract more finishers by surveying them 10

after each race and catering to their requests. We added “Chip Timing” in 2014, which was a huge selling point among those surveyed and the number one reason finishers attended the race. Chip Timing is an electronic chip attached to each runner’s bib number that automatically registers their start and finish times. This provides more accurate times and a faster awards ceremony. The Chip Timing company also provides an online registration website for the event. Last year, we began offering performance wear shirts (e.g., Nike Dri-Fit shirts) instead of the normal cotton t-shirts, which is the number two reason finishers attended the race. The Covered Bridge 5K race course is attractive to visitors and tourists alike because it takes them through the beautiful landmarks and historical sights of Jack’s Creek Covered Bridge and the site of the former Bob White Covered Bridge. The Sixth Annual Bridge 5K Run/Walk will be held on June 18, 2016, in Woolwine, VA. Registration begins at 7:00 am at the Smith River Church of the Brethren, 2282 Bob White Road, Stuart, VA. The race will begin at 8:00 am near Worley’s Machines on Route 8. Proceeds benefit Stuart Elementary School Athletic Boosters.

A Shoe-String Budget and a Group of Creative Locals

The Floyd Community Theatre Guild Enters its Second Season in Full Swing What does a shoe-string budget, a group of creative locals, and the call to perform have in common in a small town atmosphere? You’ve got it, community theatre. If you’ve ever had the opportunity to be a member of the cast, crew, or the audience in a community theatre production, then you’ve experienced the rare marvel that only this genre can bring to the table. Community theatre is neither about the glamour nor the glory, and it’s certainly not about rigid rehearsal schedules nor “things going exactly as planned.” Rather, community theatre requires a sense of flexibility, a ton of creative spark, a plethora of untapped talent, and a whole lot of community spirit. A small Appalachian community in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Floyd is well-known for its bluegrass music, homegrown artists, and local crafts. In the last two years, the theatre arts have become a thriving aspect of the authentic art vibe in Floyd County. The Floyd Community Theatre Guild (FCTG) was founded in 2014 and is currently in its second season, performing, “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)” and “Alice in Wonderland,” this spring. The mission of the FCTG is to “educate and influence individuals through works of theatrical productions and classes and make a difference in the community of Floyd and its surrounding areas” (FloydCTG.com). The organization offers acting, stage construction, and makeup experiences to community members ages 8 and up. In addition to providing theatre arts opportunities to the Floyd community at large, the FCTG operates in close-knit cooperation with the local high school’s student theatre program through the sharing of costumes, set pieces, and even actors. The multi-age structure of the community theatre provides meaningful

12

www.Facebook.com/FloydMagazine

and cooperative learning experiences for theatre students of all ages and backgrounds in Floyd County. With opportunities spanning a wide range of ages and acting experience levels, three types of productions are performed through FCTG: Main Stage productions are open to community members age 16 and up; Young Actor’s productions are open to ages 8-15; and Workshop productions offer the widest range of age differences which is open to ages 8 and up. During its rookie season, the FCTG actors and actresses performed in Main Stage productions of “Play On!,” “The Importance of Being Earnest,” and “39 Steps.” Young Actor’s productions included “The Laramie Project” and “The Almost Totally True Story of Hansel & Gretel.” The age 8 and up Workshop

production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” was the final 2015 performance. The current FCTG Board Members include: Casey Worley, Emily Gruver, and Heather Simpson. The Board Chair is Floyd County native, Casey Worley, who holds a B.A. in theatre from King University and teaches theatre and technology education at Floyd County High School. Casey also serves the local community, both as a high school soccer coach and forensics coach. In charge of costume design, Floyd County native, Emily Gruver, holds a B.A. in theatre from George Mason and acts as the Guild’s Artistic Director. Emily also works as a production editor for Citizens Telephone Coop in Floyd and also, coaches Junior Olympics Volleyball. In charge of set design and creation, Floyd County native, Heather Simpson, holds a B.A. in theatre from Roanoke College and serves as the Technical Director for the Guild. Heather is a local freelance artist who also enjoys Girls Scouts with her daughters. Floyd’s community theatre productions are performed at The June Bug Center in Floyd, at 251 Parkway Lane. Auditions for the upcoming production of “Alice in Wonderland” begin on April 12th. If the call of the theatre beckons you, then consider becoming a part of the creativity and fun of community theatre in Floyd by auditioning or by becoming a FCTG volunteer. More information can be found at the FCTG website, www.FloydCTG.com or on the FCTG’s Facebook page. “Great theatre is about challenging how we think and encouraging us to fantasize about a world we aspire to.” −William Dafoe

Preserving A Dream The history of Dogtown Roadhouse began almost 10 years ago. The focus was simple: great food, great people, and great times. Scott Smith, a founder and now head chef at Dogtown, tells the story of when he was four years old and his Italian grandfather would make food in his kitchen. Scott could not see the top of the table, but his “Pop pop” would hand down tasty bites of beautiful things to him. It was all about love of food and love of family. When he became an adult, Scott built an oven on the back of an old farm truck. He then set off to bake beautiful pies around the east coast. He went everywhere that people were having fun: farmer’s markets, football games, music festivals, and even a parking lot in downtown Floyd. He took his food to the people and they responded in-kind. In the summer of 2010, the perfect location in Floyd presented itself for Scott to establish a more permanent presence for his culinary creations. An old factory on Main Street which been bought by Anga Miller and converted into a music venue called, “The Sun Music Hall,” became the Dogtown Roadhouse. Interesting to note that back in 2002, when Anga Miller opened “the Sun Music Hall” it was to present live music from both regional and national acts, as well as providing a venue for many talented local artists. This sparked a long list of well-known acts that performed there over the years. Now adding delicious food and spirits was the icing on the cake. After several amazing years, Scott sold the restaurant to six actively supportive members of the community: Anga Miller, Ed Erwin, Rick Hall, Starroot, Janiah Allen, and Lucy Lamanna so they could preserve and secure Dogtown’s presence and future. Scott decided to stay on as executive chef with Anga Miller and Ed Erwin as the primary owners. Today, the focus is still the same, great food for great people having a great time. “I am so very proud of what Dogtown was, is, and will be,” Scott says while rolling dough out in the kitchen. Dogtown is still making pizzas the right way. The dough is cold-fermented for several days and then cooked in a 1000-degree brick oven, the same way Scott’s family did it back in Naples. Stories of Dogtown Roadhouse have appeared in many magazines. The James Beard Award winner (and Scott’s bread guru), Peter Reinhart, once wrote, “I’d rank their pizza right up there with Pizzeria Bianco and Pizzeria Mozza at the top of my ‘will travel long distances for’ list.” A compliment that Dogtown is honored and proud to have received, but the true compliment they are seeking is yours with every pie, every time you visit. When you visit Dogtown, you are family. Their love for Floyd is ever-present and their focus is for you to experience that love as well. With a kid-friendly atmosphere, excellent food, a full bar with 14 rotating taps, and live entertainment, it is a guaranteed great time for all age groups. A unique experience in itself is sitting at the bar at Dogtown, which offers a wide selection of craft beer that reflects the local culture; exposing each person to

14

www.Facebook.com/FloydMagazine

new tastes while creating unique signature cocktails from fresh ingredients and local spirits. Choice beers from around the region are always on tap. The bartenders, Josh and Sean, are very knowledgeable in directing every customer to the perfect beer. With the recent addition of legal moonshine in the town, Dogtown’s head bartender, Sean Matuk, is excited to add fresh moonshine cocktails to the drink menu, which encompasses the essence of the Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountains. Sean says, “There’s always something new to experience here, it’s never the same thing twice and I’m always looking for new ways to show that.” These unique libations would not be possible if it were not for the diligent efforts of Ed Erwin, to help get the local ABC laws changed during 2015. And let’s not forget the music… Depending on the performance, Dogtown will provide one of two settings: A small stage built for more intimate, low-key settings such as Sunday night’s open mic. A creation of Rick Hall and Starroot, the energy and love that they have put into Sunday’s open mic is apparent, making it a “can’t miss” closure to the perfect Floyd weekend. Dogtown provides an intimate experience with the artists and locals, a true treat for those who want to see talented local musicians. Assistant manager, Aaron Bauer, says, “Open mic night at Dogtown is the utmost, heartfelt and vulnerable expression of the love of music that exists in this world. Witnessing it is magical.” The second setting is for larger performances where there is a large main stage with a dance floor to get your boogie on! Dogtown’s regionally respected main stage has hosted hundreds of bands, local groups, and nationally touring acts such as Rising Appalachia, Donna the Buffalo, Richie Havens, Leon Russell, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Grace Potter, Laura Reed, and John Brown’s Body. On warmer nights, the dance floor opens up to an expansive, partially covered porch that overlooks the neighboring park where you can watch fantastic sunsets while hearing live music. The addition of a large screen TV for sports, an extended second bar, and new kitchen equipment to create a more extensive menu, has made Dogtown the place to be. Anga and Ed are proud of the progress that has happened so far at Dogtown, and are constantly strategizing on ways to continue to improve the experience, always taking into account customers’ feedback. Check out the events tab on the Dogtown Facebook page to stay informed of all upcoming events and specials. Visit http://www.dogtownroadhouse.com/ to book your catering, music, and event needs. Dogtown Roadhouse is truly a unique experience. You make a great new friend, your dream job, or a wonderful business opportunity opens up, or you meet someone special and have that cosmic head bonk. This is my right person. In the course of interviewing couples to plan their wedding ceremony, they tell me their love story. Call it synchronicity or the hand of God, there certainly does seem to be Divine Order and Intelligence that brings people together in the various aspects our lives. It happens in education, “When the student is ready, the teacher appears.” Sometimes synchronicity happens in friendship and business. too. The story of how a “Sunday Kind of Love wedding” at Floyd Yurt Lodging came to be is a case in point. The story begins with Rhonda Withington who buys a piece of land in Willis. A positive, upbeat person and an animal lover, she befriends her neighbor, Janet Keith, and her cows. Rhonda buys a yurt from Blue Ridge Yurts, a local company which makes the circular, ecologicallyfriendly, low carbon-footprint structures. For those who may not be familiar with yurts, they were originated by Mongolian nomads, who covered them in wool and vented them with a hole in the top for the cooking and heating smoke to escape. Today’s yurts are made with modern fabrics and at the top of the yurt is a beautiful acrylic dome through which one can view the stars in the night sky. Rhonda then hires K&B Custom Carpentry to build a platform for the yurt. Misters K and B show up, and the work begins. Everyone gets along famously. So much so that Mister B says to his mother, “You know, I think you’d really like our new client.” Meanwhile, Rhonda tells Janet [who happens to have been my son’s Forensics Coach and one of his favorite teachers at FCHS, but I digress] about the guys building her deck. And she tells Rhonda much the same thing, “I think you’d enjoy meeting Josh’s mother.” So bam! We meet for coffee and it’s as if we’ve known each other all our lives. We even have a feeling that maybe we have some creative project to do together, but we’re content to let whatever it may be unfold in its own time. Fast forward a year 18

or so to another coffee get-together. Rhonda and I are sipping java and catching each other up on our latest adventures. “Guess what,” she says, “I am now the booking person for Floyd Yurt Lodging.” “Oh, that place is gorgeous,” I respond. “I was there for a Floyd Chamber of Commerce meeting. The inside is spacious and open. It has the porch and patio for guests to enjoy refreshments. You know, it would be just perfect for small, intimate weddings. The wedding party can wait upstairs before the wedding and make their entrance down the staircase.” So that day, we founded our collaborative project. Before we finished our second cup, we created “A Sunday Kind of Love,” an affordable, yet elegant wedding package that includes use of the venue for a Sunday afternoon wedding or vow renewal. It includes my customized ceremony services, fresh floral bouquet or vase of cut flowers, a folk art keepsake marriage or vow renewal certificate, and professional photography by Rhonda Withington, which is given to the couple on a flash drive. Also included in the package, is a one night stay at the fully appointed venue. The yurt has a 30 foot cathedral ceiling, 10 foot high walls, circular staircase to the second floor loft, 2 bedrooms and bath, full kitchen, big screen TV, and more. The entire package is affordably priced at only $800.00. Floyd Yurt Lodging is near quaint shops, music, galleries, and outdoor activities in and around Floyd. Our season begins April 3 and runs through January 1, weather permitting. Whether you are coming from a nearby city or town or traveling here from out of state, we invite you and your beloved to explore the natural beauty and cultural richness of our area. We hope you’ll discover sweet synchronicities here as you celebrate your love story with us. To inquire for available dates, call (Kanta) (540) 577-8854. Rev. Bell Gallery and Garden “Quite possibly the nicest little shop” Bill and Joanne Bell both came to Floyd County and met one another in the 1970’s. They fell madly in love, married, and raised their four brilliant and talented children; all while starting and running their own art and craft business. Bill followed his lifelong interest in photography, and Joanne’s love of gardening led to her pressed flower artistry in beveled glass and jewelry. After twenty five years on the road exhibiting and selling their work at art shows, they opened their gallery in the spring of 2006. It’s now been ten years! The shop’s specialties include photography, pressed floral art, garden art, pottery, jewelry, gifts, and much more. By doing hundreds of art shows, they became a part of the local and regional arts community, and it was natural for them to open a gallery in their own town. Over the years, Floyd has become a magnet

22

for artistic and creative people, many of whose works can be found in the Bell Gallery. The gallery has the work of over 70 talented local and regional artists as well as craftspeople. The gallery features Bill’s award winning landscape photography and Joanne’s pressed floral artwork and handmade jewelry designs. Bill began printing in his darkroom in 1989, and now prints all of his own work on canvas using a state of the art digital printer. These beautiful prints are vivid, rich, and dimensional which do not require frames and glass, and are the culmination of Bill’s 26 years of fine printmaking experience. Joanne comes from a long line of hunter gatherers and spends a lot of her time, gathering and pressing leaves, grasses, ferns, and flowers. She uses traditional stained glass techniques and lead-free solder to make her beveled

glass sun catchers and jewelry. She also makes complementary beaded jewelry using semiprecious stones. The Bell Gallery building is an unusual and rare stacked hardwood structure that is a piece of art according to Joanne. Bill calls it a piece of work! Construction began in 1899 and is nearing completion. This summer’s project will be the little garden in the alley. Bill and Joanne could not run their gallery without the help of their daughter, Darcie Luster, who is manager and galFriday. The gallery is open seven days a week, in season. Please stop in when you are in Downtown Floyd, located just steps from the light. Bell Gallery and Garden • 540-745-4494 112 N. Locust Street • Floyd, VA 24091 www.bellgalleryandgarden.com

Enjoying the Best of the Blue Ridge Like spring along the Blue Ridge Parkway, a once-quiet community between Chateau Morrisette Winery and Mabry Mill is budding with new energy and is one of the Floyd areas best kept secrets. Developed as a vacation community more than 40 years ago, the SLATEMONT neighborhood has come together with dollars and determination to rebuild its roads, upgrade its water system, and reestablish its financial stability. Individually, more than one-third of the neighborhood’s 35 homes have been significantly updated or completely renovated. The infrastructure investments now also make it possible for limited new construction to occur in this unparalleled natural setting. While improved amenities have drawn people to the Buffalo Mountain neighborhood, it’s not what makes them stay. SLATEMONT offers a unique lifestyle that embraces nature, celebrates wildlife, and respects solitude, but not at the expense of community connections. It is a pleasant and welcoming neighborhood where it is not at all unusual to see friends walking together, sharing a glass of wine on a deck at sunset, or driving a golf cart to a neighbor’s house for dinner. Because it’s nestled into the Buffalo Ridge mountainside, most of the homes enjoy

24

www.Facebook.com/FloydMagazine

STUNNING VIEWS. SLATEMONT neighbors work together to sustain their own community as well as reach out to others in the region. The SLATEMONT Property Owners’ Association (SPOA) is led by a community-elected board of directors who serve two-year terms. In recent years, it is noteworthy that the board has worked to keep dues to a minimum while maintaining the integrity of the community’s infrastructure and fiscal health, among other activities. For example, they also coordinate efforts to maintain SLATEMONT’s “Firewise Community” certification. Thus, for one Saturday each spring and fall, neighbors join together to ensure that fire roads are well-maintained and that limbs and underbrush are trimmed. Firewise clean up days and the annual homeowners meeting are always followed by community potlucks. One way SLATEMONT folks reach out to others in the region is by way of the “SLATEMONT Santa” program, through which community residents have donated more than $10,000 to help area families who are going through difficult times. Like taking a deep breath of azalea-scented air after a cold Blue Ridge winter, this small community is a great example to remind us all about how beautiful life here can be. Visit a Floyd Farm Everyone who lives in Floyd wants to preserve the heritage and traditions of this old farming community. The folks at Riverstone Organic Farm are no different. They are realizing their dream of creating a destination farm where high quality food is produce. The farm gate is open for visitors to experience the diverse offerings of tours, scenic walks, classes, and a bountiful on-farm store stocked with fresh, local food. It’s a must-see for anyone interested in food, farming, and the great outdoors. Riverstone is a busy, thriving local venture—an experiment in sustainable small-scale agriculture. It has a mission to promote an interest in good land stewardship, healthy food, and joyful local living. The farm lies in a quiet, pastoral valley less than three miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway in Floyd County. Rolling pastures, woodlands, and flat river bottom fields surround the confluence of the Little River and the Silver Leaf Creek which both flow through the property. It is a beautiful location where visitors are welcomed to see a working farm, to relax, and to enjoy the natural setting as well as learning more

about good food and farming. Everyone is invited to follow the self-guided walking trail (approximately 1-½ miles in length) along the river and through the woods. It includes a great riverside picnic spot and is open daily during daylight hours. Regularly scheduled family-friendly farm tours include visits to the farm animals and a ride in the hay wagon. For those interested in learning more about organic farming and the way good food is produced, there are more in-depth tours available by appointment. There is a schedule of special classes on such topics as gardening skills, food preservation, cooking, tracking, cheese making, pleinair painting, and more. There are also plans for an on-farm dining in the farmto-table tradition. The 80-acre farm and surrounding rented farm land now includes 11 acres of fenced crop land along with grazing for a small herd of grass-fed cattle, a flock of Katahdin sheep, and a passel of freerange hogs. Other farm ventures include laying hens, mushrooms, and almost three acres of perennial vegetables and berries. The newest project is growing ginger and turmeric. These are tropical

crops which can be grown under cover in Virginia and they are much in demand for their impressive health benefits. With one heated greenhouse and five unheated high tunnels, the farm is well placed for a project like this. And coming soon, an on-farm kitchen where jams, pickles, soups, and baked goods will be made. Much of the produce of the farm is sold wholesale; however, everything is available for purchase at the picturesque on-farm store which is open year round seven days a week from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm. The store stocks fresh organic vegetables in season, GMO free eggs, and grass-fed meat and artisan preserves which are all from the farm. There is also a selection of products from other local farms and farm related gifts. A visit to Riverstone is a great way to get a little exercise, enjoy the countryside, and get an inside glimpse of life on the farm. Keep in touch with Riverstone’s upcoming activities through the website: www.riverstoneorganicfarm.com and sign up to receive the weekly newsletter. You can also visit us on Facebook.

Ten Years & Growing Strong Organizers of the annual Floyd Livestock and County Fair have chosen a theme for the 2016 event which is appropriate for the event’s tenth anniversary: Ten Years & Growing Strong! The theme in 2015 was “Bringin’ It Back to the Farm,” as the event was moved to Chantilly Farm, a 200-acre campground and events venue near the Blue Ridge Parkway in Floyd County. Chantilly Farm donated the use of the facilities to the County Fair in order to provide the event with much needed space to grow and expand. In its first year there, the fair tripled in attendance and was able to dramatically increase the number of activities offered. “Our facilities are particularly well-suited for an event like the County Fair and we love our community! We’re excited to see how things will grow, to see what groups and individuals come forward to participate and showcase all of the wonderful things that Floyd has to offer,” said Dee Wallace, a managing associate at Chantilly Farm. Floyd’s fair made a huge impression at the annual conference of the Virginia Fairs Association held in Hot Springs earlier this year. Representatives from the Floyd area attended the conference and were delighted to receive a total of seven state awards in the category of ‘Events Under 7,000 Attendees’: • Communication Award, Postcard: 1st Place & Best in Show • Communication Award, T-shirt: 1st Place • Communication Award, Website: 3rd Place • Communication Award, Theme: 2nd Place • Communication Award, Poster: 1st Place

30

www.Facebook.com/FloydMagazine

• Communication Award, Newspaper Article: 3rd Place • Communication Award, Brochure: 2nd Place “To get all of this recognition from the state level was truly unexpected,” said Floyd County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee chairman, Vickie Spangler. “It will be very exciting to see the new possibilities that open up as we move forward.” Earlier this year, an advisory board was formed for the Floyd Livestock and County Fair. Board members represent Floyd County, the Floyd Tourism office, the Floyd County Farm Bureau, the Women’s Committee, and the Chantilly Farm. A fair secretary has been designated, and monthly meetings are being held to incorporate others who will have the opportunity to contribute and promote their brand to the growing audience of the fair. “We’re excited to build upon the success that we experienced last year and look forward to forming partnerships with more Floyd-based civic groups in the future,” commented fair organizer, Julie Weddle. “Our shared goal is to work together to build community, highlight Floyd’s agriculture and heritage, and to grow the fair with activities for all ages in a positive atmosphere.” Floyd Livestock and County Fair www.floydvafair.com • (540) 493-7370 www.facebook.com/FloydLivestockandCountyFair

18 Years and Change There are a few special places in every community, places that become landmarks among the locals and places that are a must-see among those who are just passing through. The Bread Basket in Floyd, VA along Webbs Mill Road (Rt. #8) is one of those places. “Missy” is the owner and proprietor of The Bread Basket. She moved to Floyd nearly 20 years ago to work alongside some friends who were starting a church just a few miles from town. Missy Yoder (now, Hochstetler) originally taught school for the fledgling Wills Ridge Mennonite Church and sold baked goods in her spare time to supplement her income. Missy sold her baked goodies at different venues throughout the town and after a while, discovered that people would come back for more. This began the gears to turn in her mind and the “what-ifs” of a bakery of her own continued to creep into her thoughts. These thoughts turned into conversations and the conversations turned into encouragement from friends and relatives. As a result, the Bread Basket opened its doors on April 17, 1998. The bakery started in a small outbuilding with a modest assortment of bulk items (candy, baking ingredients, etc.) as well as popular baked goods. It is not unusual to hear long-time friends and patrons remark, with a big smile, about how “I remember when you were just in that little building.” Indeed, they are truly one of the reasons why The Bread Basket began and why it couldn’t just stay “in that little building”. The bakery expanded in 2006 to include a larger area for bulk items; a deli to sell meats and cheeses; and also, sandwiches made with the fresh bread. So, what is the secret of their success? How can a small business like this survive in a box-store highvolume world in little out-of-the-way Floyd, Virginia? In the pages of The Bread Basket Staff Handbook, the goals for the 32

www.Facebook.com/FloydMagazine

business are two-fold: • “More important than making money, is to be a witness and a blessing to the community!” • “Allowing God to use us in others lives, even in a small way.” Most businesses exist solely to make a profit. The Bread Basket exists to serve the people of Floyd County by investing in their lives. That can mean many things for many different people. To all the people that walk through our doors, it means friendliness and respect. It means smiles. It means baking a loaf of bread with quality in mind. It means sculpting a sandwich as a work of art to be enjoyed by a tourist who has never been to Floyd. It means a conversation with that customer who always comes in on Saturday at three o’clock. It means taking time to be real and have relationships. Since its beginning nearly two decades ago, many seasons have come and gone at The Bread Basket. Children who used to come in with their parents with hopes of getting a treat now have children of their own seeking a treat. The newest generations of people to walk through the doors are familiar with the smells of home-baked bread, pies, and cookies. And there has never been a time when you had to ask the baker to slice your bread. Indeed, much has changed over the years; even here in The Bread Basket. In March of last year, Missy took on a new business partner named, Al Hochstetler, and the two were happily wed. Al has become a welcomed addition to The Bread Basket family. In this day and age, bigger usually means better, but The Bread Basket has continued to remain a landmark among locals and a “must-see” for those just passing through. Throughout the years, the timeless beliefs in God and the worth of the customer are the uncompromising threads of success in an ever-changing world. A Gathering of Poets: Another Floyd “First” “On the Waters” Outfitters on Thunderstruck Road, plays host to the first Little River Poetry Festival from June 10th – 12th. The festival is in partnership with Norfolk poets, Jack Callan and his wife, Judith Stevens, who are writers and lifetime members of the Poetry Society of Virginia (PSV). An exhibited artist and recent Vice President of PSV, Jack has been visiting Floyd for over twenty years. He has been a part of Floyd’s earlier poetry readings and art exhibitions, including, “Art on the Parkway,” and a recent plein air event at Chateau Morrisette. His wife, Judith, is a published poet who presents workshops to schools and assisted living facilities where she encourages people of all ages to fall in love with poetry. The idea for the Poetry Festival came about from a recent trip to Floyd. While kayaking down the Little River, the couple noticed a rock overhang which they thought would make a perfect outdoor natural amphitheatre and backdrop for poetry readings. That idea has now expanded to include a kayak trip with poets who are writing as they paddle, then reading aloud from the amphitheatre to an audience sitting in chairs on the riverbank. The following day, there is a guided hike up nearby Buffalo Mountain which culminates in an outdoor poetry reading atop the mountain. Artists and painters are encouraged to attend and to bring their canvasses and palettes and paint throughout the weekend. Everyone is invited to bring a notebook, pen, and poems to share at the Open Mics. Beginning at 3:00 PM on Friday, June 10th, 34

festival goers will gather at “On The Water” Outfitters located at 2053 Thunderstruck Road, to begin the weekend celebration of poetry workshops, Open Mics, and Yoga. On Saturday, June 11th, those who wish to participate in a group paddle down the river will have the challenge of writing poetry “in the moment,” or Ekphrastically. This is a Greek word which means using one art form. The beauty of nature while taking a trip downriver to inspire the writing of poetry will be an elective, as will everything else that is offered during the weekend. Participants may choose to be a part of the audience along the river or they may paddle in kayaks, arriving at the amphitheatre and reading their works aloud. Daily Poetry Workshops, along with guest poets, and continued Open Mics with Poetry Panels will be offered at the campsite during the day. Evening poetry readings and Open Mics will also be held off-site each evening at the Floyd Friends Meeting House located at 1199 Christiansburg Pike in Floyd. Early Sunday morning, June 12th, the second nature-inspired Ekphrastic poetrywriting session will occur with a guided group hike to Buffalo Mountain. For those wishing to skip the hike, poetry will be offered not only back at the site, but also at nearby Friends Meeting at 10:00 AM. If you have never experienced a silent Quaker worship sharing in a sylvan setting, consider this your invitation to a unique sacred experience. “Walt Whitman Yoga,” will be taught each day by certified yoga instructor and poet, Jill Winkowski. Evening yoga practice

and meditation will be offered by certified Iyengar yoga instructor and poet, Judith Stevens. Yoga sessions are open to all attendees, at all levels. You’ll be amazed at how quickly you will learn basic poses and how much better you will feel afterwards. Some of the Virginia-based homegrown featured poets and poetry panel members will include the following PSV members: Toni Wynn, Andrew Cain, Tanya Cunningham, James Bane, Jill Winkowski, Jack Callan, Judith Stevens, David King of South Carolina, and various other local Floyd area poets. This festival is open to all who write and enjoy poetry as well as those who want to learn. It is also open to yoga practitioners and people who relish a mountain get-away adventure with an opportunity to meet likeminded people and participate in creative, energizing activities. A Festival “Lawn Chair Clause” guarantees that you can choose to be as active or as restful as you desire throughout the weekend. You may opt in or out of activities as you desire. You may put your feet up, read in the meadow, or just soak up the sun at any time. Trips to town for special meals and also places of interest will be offered. A local food truck offering healthy food options will visit the site as well. A list of nearby camping information, bed and breakfast locations, area motel and hotels, a detailed schedule, and registration form will be sent to all who are interested. For more information and to register, call (757) 622-8721 or write Jack Callan and Judith Stevens at 2931 Somme Avenue, Norfolk, VA 23509.

From Otavalo Ecuador to Floyd Virginia Set in the spectacular mountains of Otavalo, Ecuador, WinterSun clothing is created in a fair-trade environment in our own factory where each piece is handpainted, hand-dyed, and sewn especially for you. Every detail is taken into consideration as WinterSun chooses the finest cotton, linen and findings, including locally and sustainably produced buttons made from tagua nuts. Our factory features huge windows in the sewing rooms that look out over the mist-covered mountains and the openair structures where our painters work to create works of art out of every meter of fabric. You’ll practically feel the fresh breezes every time you slip on a favorite WinterSun piece. Anga Miller, an art school graduate from North Carolina, discovered the magic of Ecuador and founded WinterSun in 1983. Here in the famed Andean mountain village of Otavalo, famous for its hand-woven textiles, Anga and her staff developed a unique, artistic clothing line that is as distinctive and beautiful as you. Anga currently resides in the artistic community of Floyd, VA and travels to Ecuador frequently. WinterSun’s creative, unique clothing is made of top quality linen, cotton, or cotton/Lycra blends that are as durable and easy-to-care for as they are beautiful. Each print is the result of an elaborate process combining hand painting, hand dying, and wax resistant batik. The print for each garment takes hours of meticulous work by our skilled artisans. Many of our painters have been with us for over ten years. Even WinterSun’s coordinating solids are hand-dyed. Sure, we could buy machines to do this, but in an artisanal process, there is no substitute for the involvement of the hand. All of our dyes are environmentally-friendly, cold-water, long-lasting dyes which hold their color. After the fabrics have been 36

www.Facebook.com/FloydMagazine

completely painted, they are hand carried out into the field behind the factory and laid out tenderly on the grass to dry in the gentle Ecuadorian air. Once the fabric has dried they are carried to the cutting room. The cutters in the cutting room first lay the meters of painted fabric out on a table. They’ll take the pattern for your garment and lay it out by hand on the bolt of fabric, carefully choosing where each piece of sleeve or pocket will be cut, based on the print you chose. This jigsaw pattern skill takes years and years to develop. After the layout is complete, the pattern cutter will hand trace the cardboard patterns, and cut out each piece of your garment with scissors to then pass on to a seamstress in a neat bundle, tied with fabric. In 99% of all sewing factories, one seamstress may spend her whole life sewing just the cuffs on jeans. Not at WinterSun. A seamstress will get the bundle of carefully cut fabric for your garment and sew the entire piece, just like your mother or grandmother did. Our seamstresses take immense pride in their work, and they want to make sure your garment is perfect from top to bottom and take responsibility for it! As they are sewing, they are inspecting every piece, and if they find a flaw in the painting, dying, or cutting, they send it back to be redone. Many of our seamstresses have been with us for over 20 years! WinterSun Clothing has a boutique right on Main Street in Floyd. The friendly sales associates, Kim and Jackie, will point you to the perfect garment to accent your beauty. Come by and take a look, it’s definitely a one of a kind experience. info@wintersunclothing.com Facebook: WinterSun Clothing WinterSun Storefront: 302 S Locust St, Floyd, VA, 540-745-7884 Hours: Mon-Sat 10-6, Sun 12-5 www.wintersunclothing.com

Kindred spirits meet in Floyd While Cielo Sand Hodson was living and working her way up the Appalachian mountain chain, Patricia Robin Woodruff was working her way down it and they eventually met at the Floyd Artists Association in Floyd, Virginia. Cielo studied Fine Art and Philosophy at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri and Indiana University. She then moved with her husband, Leaf Myczack, to Tennessee where they were advocates for clean waterways. Cielo sold her art in Chattanooga, and they started a teaching farm which they recently relocated to Floyd. In the meantime, Patricia Robin Woodruff moved with her husband from where she grew up in Philadelphia to the Appalachian mountains of Pennsylvania to build a self-sufficient homestead. She started blossoming in her art which led her to research an area with a supportive community of people. This led her to the creative, open-minded, musical town of Floyd, Virginia. Cielo stated, “My paintings and the blending of my drawings and photography are inspired by the lively play of light, color, and exquisite shapes of our living Earth.” She uses acrylics, collage, and computer manipulation to weave her photography and drawings, striving to express the mysteries of the dynamic living Earth. Patricia works sometimes in pastel and sometimes in watercolor, capturing the beauty of nature in her flower paintings and those of the mountains and forests of her home. While they work in different media, the same sense of joy in nature comes through to the viewer from both of their works of art. Cielo’s life and loves are deeply rooted in the Earth. As an Indiana child, she experienced a special kinship with the natural world of trees, lakes, sand dunes, and the wildflower meadow behind her childhood home. Using various art forms to express her understanding of the living, dynamic Earth, she has become a notable artist who captures the essence of life itself. As an outspoken advocate for the natural world, she helped pioneer both a grassroots citizen water protection organization (BH RiverKeeper), and a forest advocacy movement in the Deep South called the Dogwood Alliance. Cielo and her husband now run Broadened Horizons Organic Farm located at 625 Laurel Creek Rd in Pilot, VA. It is a teaching farm that runs classes on organic methods and sustainable agriculture. http://www.sustainability-teaching-farm.com/ Cielo also joined the Floyd Artists Association where she found a friend and kindred spirit in Patricia. A love of the Earth, its philosophy and spirit, made them instant friends. “We both have such a love of nature. When I was a kid living in a row home in Philly, I made myself

38

www.Facebook.com/FloydMagazine

a little backyard herb garden. I’d burrow under the arched branches of the blackberries when they were in flower, just to watch the bees buzzing around. I’d spend hours there.” Patricia would also bicycle to the nearby Bucks County and explore the stream and flower-edged pond hidden in nearby woods. Once she was married, she moved with her husband to the deep forested mountains of Cameron County, Pennsylvania to raise their family. They built a geodesic dome which was fed by fresh spring water and powered by solar and wind. Patricia and her husband helped found the Cameron County Family Center to provide a resource for parents and young children. As an advocate for others, they took on fighting a corrupt government official and eventually got the official out of office. Looking for a community, they came to Floyd, VA. Patricia got involved in a weekly drawing group and out of that, she became one of six founding members of the Floyd Artists Association (FAA). Their mission is “to support and promote artists of Floyd County and contribute to the creative arts culture of Floyd by providing a downtown, professional setting that fosters creativity, quality art, and interaction between artists, patrons, and the public.” FAA has since expanded to 16 artists, including Cielo as one of the newest members. Patricia Robin Woodruff and Cielo Sand Hodson share a deep love of the Earth, a sense of responsibility for caring for it, and a vibrant and positive attitude which is evident in their artwork. They both embrace a strong sense of justice and work ethic to make this world a better place for future generations. They both use art as a channel for that creative spirit. And they both have taken on a name that is better suited to their inner self. Cielo completely embraces a name that means “sky” while Patricia added Robin (after the playful character Robin Hood, who lives in the woods and fights for the rights of those less fortunate). Both Cielo and Patricia are members of the Floyd Artist Association at 203 S. Locust Street in Floyd, Virginia (just across the street from the Floyd Country Store). Stop in to see their artwork. The hours are posted at http://www.floydartists.com/. “Patricia Robin Woodruff, divides her time between her geodesic dome that runs off solar deep in the woods of PA and the groovy, artistic town of Floyd, VA. She is an artist and author, working on a book on her spiritual journey to the Amazon jungle to be released in 2016. Follow her blog on creativity at InnerArtSpirit. Wordpress.com”

Design for Community: Jubilee follows the Cohousing principle of creating a design that naturally supports interaction and connection between neighbors which includes: having private homes face one another; being village-like; pedestrian walkways; and a car-free central area where children and adults can safely gather to play, garden, chat, or work together. It also includes a spacious “Common House for shared meals, celebrations, meetings, and performances.

Our Story: Some years ago a small group of Floyd residents came together around the idea of creating a Cohousing community in Floyd, Virginia. They were drawn to the idea of living in a close-knit, energy-efficient village of homes with a strong sense of community that would strike a balance between easy, supportive interaction among neighbors and a respect for personal privacy. The early members not only created a vision for the project and a commitment to one another, but developed bonds of friendship and community among the growing group by meeting, working, and playing together. They embraced a consensus oriented decision-making process and began planning and designing their future community.

Ecologically, Economically, and Socially Sustainable: Jubilee envisions their neighborhood as a model for the future with responsible land use, a respect for nature, energy efficient housing with simple, beautiful, and reasonably priced homes as well as a place where neighbors feel connected to one another. To facilitate this envisioned neighborhood, homes will be clustered to maximize green-space while supporting connection with the community. It will emphasize ecological principles and energy efficiency in design and operation.

The group of current households is now busy working on site and home designs, hiring a local builder, and getting approvals necessary to break ground. New Members Welcome! Current members include families with children, retirees, Floyd residents, and folks from out of state. Jubilee is looking to grow to 15 households before breaking ground. It is planning for homes in the community ranging from one bedroom units for singles to three bedroom units which are large enough for a family with several children. Take Comfort in Floyd For almost twelve years, Green Label Organic, based right here in Floyd County, has been providing national retailers, outdoor sports, and green gift stores with top of the line, quality organic cotton T’s and tops. Green Label Organic is a family owned business that features graphically driven, fun to wear apparel with a point of view. From the cotton field to our store’s shelves, we pride ourselves on our commitment to a green, organic, and sustainable supply chain. From yarn to shirt, every step along the way is carefully looked after to ensure the best practices. We begin with a long-staple, organic, cotton fiber that is ring-spun into a buttery soft yarn that then produces some of the softest and most comfortable cotton clothing you will ever wear. Each and every Green Label Organic shirt is initially produced in its natural cotton color (using no bleaches, whiteners, or optical brighteners) and left ready to be individually garment-dyed into an array of beautiful, earthy hues using the finest low-impact fiber, reactive dyes available. Using low-impact dyes makes it possible for us to avoid the use of harsh chemistry and heavy metals that

46

www.Facebook.com/FloydMagazine

would otherwise cling to the clothing and do unnecessary harm to the environment when expelled from the dye machines. Green Label Organic T’s and tops are never printed with plastics or other harsh printing chemicals. We use a patented water-based

“green-chemistry” screen printing method. Most conventional T-shirts are printed with liquid PVC that leaves a rough and bumpy feel on the top of the shirt. Green Label Organic water-based printed shirts leave no printing residue so you will never “feel” the print. In fact, our water-based prints are so soft and light that they’re breathable, too! No perspiring behind the print. Green Label Organic shirts are labeled with all information printed in the neck so there is

no need to tear out the labels to be comfortable, as we start out comfortable! Throw them in the dryer! Every shirt is guaranteed to be PRE-SHRUNK! If you liked them when you tried them on, you’ll love them the same way after every wash! We started our business with two key principles and we hold them just as firmly today, almost twelve years later, as when we made our very first shirt − always ORGANIC cotton and always MADE IN AMERICA. When visiting Floyd, come down to our big RED warehouse outlet shop. We’re a bit off the beaten path, but it’s worth it! (It’s just a five minute walk from the stop light.) We feature the same fine shirts here that you’ll see at retailers nationwide, but many more styles and some one of kind items, too. Enjoy discount pricing and special offers. In addition, we carry several other organic clothing and accessory brands as well as exotic small plants, local artisan gifts, infant & toddler clothing and gifts, and skin care products, too. Tommy Bailey Author, Tommy Bailey has always been a country boy at heart. Born and raised in West Virginia, he discovered Floyd in 1993. Values that he had always embraced, he also found in the folks of Floyd: a love of the natural world; a philosophy of self-sustainability; and a love of community. Tommy also had a love of writing, saying, “I’ve kept a journal as long as I can remember.” This has led to writing several books covering the themes of nature and self-introspection, including: The Appalachian Trail, Step by Step (2013, Amazon.) These days, Tommy home is the TreeStone Village. Inspired by Floyd’s intentional communities, it is a 20-acre homestead in Floyd County, Virginia where he tries to do what he can in terms of living simply, sustainably, ecologically, happily, and mindfully. Bee keeping, canning, gardening, and many other projects keep Tommy busy on his homestead. Tommy says, “I love spending time with my two amazing daughters and with neighbors and friends.” This love of community sparked the idea for his most recent book, Floyd Folks: Collective Wisdom from a (One Stoplight) Mountain Community. Tommy Bailey has been described as ‘a man with an insatiable hunger for life experiences, wanting to learn not only about himself, but about others and the world at large.’ The more he came in contact with some of the other souls in Floyd, the more he wondered about his wonderful adopted community and what others had learned in their life and wanted to share as well. What he created is not just a book about Floyd, but rather a distillation of creative, thoughtful people who were drawn together to this mountain community. Tommy Bailey compiled this book with words of wisdom from many of Floyd’s mindful and visionary folks. It is a book created with the intention to uplift and inspire. All the profits from this book are being contributed back to the community. Plenty!, the community food program has taken over distribution and also the profits from this book. This is a book that is making a difference in two different ways, not only does it share soul-moving and inspiring stories with others, it also provides added income to a local non-profit organization. Floyd, Virginia has been described as, “…a unique mountain community 48

www.Facebook.com/FloydMagazine

known for its music, its natural beauty, its arts, and its diverse, caring people. Located atop the Blue Ridge Plateau in southwestern Virginia, Floyd County is a haven removed from the rush of urbanity, yet alive with the sounds, colors, and textures of rural life.” A postcard proudly proclaims, “Where tie-dye and coveralls

live in harmony.” However, it is also a place filled with people who think deeply about their lives and choices. Included in this book are essays about community members such as: Bob Grubel, a composer, musician, and intentional community member; Cassie Wilson who runs an import business and family farm; nationally published author, Colleen Redman; David Grimsley, the director of the Appalachian Medicinal Herb Growers Consortium; Deborah Harris who has held such varied positions as cook, English teacher, and now paints ocarinas that she sells from her “Fairy Wagon”; Fred First, author and self proclaimed “biology-watcher” who is an

evangelist for nature; Jayn Avery with a degree in Rural Sociology and who is famous for her pottery printed with lace; Robert Foote, co-founder of the intentional community, Light Morning; Luke Staengle, president of international known recycling company, PESCO, and founder of Anahata Education Center; Richard and Linda Telling, Floyd farmers for 30 years; Patricia Robin Woodruff, spiritual artist and author; midwife, Tara Daystar; and Thais Abernethy, psychotherapist and a teacher of A Course in Miracles. These community members call Floyd, VA home and also contribute their knowledge and talents to the community. Amazon’s description of “Floyd Folks” reads: “This is an intimate collection of stories from this rural and tightknit community. Pour yourself a cup of coffee, tea, or a glass of wine or beer and settle into a comfortable chair for a bit. Prepare for a few hours of inspiring and soul-moving stories written by an eclectic mix of talented authors. They are trusted neighbors and friends with much in common, but most notably is their reverent love of nature and humanity. Their personal essays of love, loss, and triumph are some of the most heartwarming tales you’ll have read in recent memory and will linger long after you turn the final pages.” This book feeds the soul and now that Tommy Bailey has generously turned over the proceeds of the book to the community organization of Plenty!, it will now help to physically feed the community. Plenty! helps to nourish the community and feeds hungry neighbors by growing and sharing food in Floyd County, Virginia. Plenty!’s programs provide access to fresh, healthy food. It also teaches gardening and cooking skills in their Fresh Food Bank, Farm and Gardens, Schools, and Gatherings. Plenty! offers a free Community Lunch at noon every Wednesday in the summertime and during the other months, it’s offered on the last Wednesday of the month. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to bring a friend. It is located at 192 Elephant Curve Road, Floyd, VA. Hotel Floyd: Showcasing the Essence of Floyd The first thing guests notice when they enter the Hotel Floyd is the hand-carved reception desk, featuring the work of the talented woodcrafter, Ernest Bryant. On a nearby wall is another standout work of art, a larger than life, ceramic and succulent, wall-hanging made by local artist, Adam Lake. The Hotel Floyd is a boutique hotel that is decorated to give the visitor a taste of Floyd. Floydians take pride in the unique and diverse nature of their community and welcome visitors to share in the experience. When the hotel was under construction, the owners offered an opportunity to local businesses and nonprofits to “adopt” a room, so that visitors would have the opportunity to learn more about what they have to offer during their stay. Each business and non-profit that participated was provided a budget, a choice of paints, fabrics, and carpeting, as well as the freedom to choose the accessories and décor that they felt would best represent their business or organization. The result is a wonderful and unique representation of all things Floyd. Not to be missed is the Republic of

Floyd room with its hand painted walls and a fun vibe. The Spikenard Honeybee Sanctuary room features lamps filled with honey; while the School house fabric room lamps are filled with buttons. The Phoenix Hardwood room is furnished with one-of-a-kind handcrafted furniture and lamps. There’s also a Floydfest room, a Country Store, an Old Church Gallery room, and so much more. A visitor would have to return again and again to see all Floydinspired rooms that the hotel has to offer. Newly created for 2016 is a fairy garden on the back patio for guests to enjoy. The “back porch” section of the Hotel Floyd surrounds an outdoor amphitheater where guests and locals alike are invited to listen or participate in live music jams held most every Thursday night from May to October. Bring your instruments and enjoy all that is Floyd. Hotel Floyd   300 Rick Lewis Way, Floyd, VA 24091 Phone:(540) 745-6080 www.hotelfloyd.com
