Where Friends Gather

Welcome to...

Floyd, Virginia – an idyllic place where friends are known to gather.

Besides the great places you’ve (maybe) heard of: The wineries, art studios and galleries, musical venues including the Floyd Country Store, the restaurants, quaint B&Bs, and specialty shops including Schoolhouse Fabrics, The Harvest Moon and The Bread Basket…you may want to steal away to somewhere lesser known: Hikers and outdoorsmen, especially fishermen and hunters enjoy gathering in our pristine mountains to share the seasons. You and your friends may pursue nature to see our blessed Blue Ridge Mountains… take the opportunity to find a campsite and a friendly fire. Water adventures are available in several areas of the County, like along the Little River. Parks, pull-offs and vistas are plentiful, plus our Buffalo Mountain Natural Area Preserve. With the colors of fall will come the “leaf peepers” and others with a sense of spontaneity. Pack a picnic lunch and follow the road where it takes you. Wintertime may be mild, but the sense of community here will warm your heart. Make your special Floyd times memorable, and share with friends what is fulfilling. Special events and lots of ideas at www.floydcountyvirginia.org. *A NEW user interface is up and running which gives easier access and even more usefulness. The walk “Across the Way” to speak with the always-inspiring company helped to underwrite the cost of the well, and Linda Devito of AtWP: produced stainless steel “pints” for the beer garden and larger bottles for filling at the watering station. “This was one way, over the past 5 years, that we have Across-the-Way Productions, Inc. has its offices in Floyd and they create, design and execute one-of-a-kind LIVE events. “…At AtWP we believe in the transformative potential of music and celebration and are dedicated to the art of the outdoor festival.” Combining artistic instinct with detailed planning

While speaking of Roger Pauley, field manager for Rorrer Well Drilling, Linda and I agreed that “he’s Floyd County” (there are some criteria for that distinction, although they may differ largely, depending upon whom you ask). In our Fall/Winter 2011-2012 issue, we recounted some of the history of his family’s water well drilling business, from 1875 ‘til the time he joined Eric Rorrer (President) and RWD in 2007. Linda was quick to praise the work of Rorrer Well Drilling, related to a project that AtWP wanted to accomplish at the FloydFest venue. “They did a fantastic job,” Linda said, “they met with us, talked about what we needed, and provided a great service which was pretty much turnkey”. 6

work with, trying to keep our $$ local, has been just great. It is really appreciated when they do the best they can for us and work with us so well”. After we named off a nearly endless list of such businesses from around the area, we agreed that endeavors like the water project and FloydFest, for over a decade now, just simply couldn’t happen without them. “We haven’t forgotten”, Linda said. “It’s really wild, the way things are here” of the good spirit of Floyd, whether of businesses or of individuals. “People see and feel what is different and pleasing about this place. That’s what we’ve tried to do at FloydFest – to replicate what is in Floyd year-round at our site…the spirit and the cooperation. People love it. It’s a community for 4-1/2 days.”

For Floyd County… Klean Kanteen®, Founded in 2003, Chico, CA - The founders of Klean Kanteen were concerned about the environmental and health impacts of widespread plastic use. Klean Kanteen was created to promote health, sustainability and environmental awareness. A refillable Klean Kanteen® bottle made from 18/8, food-grade stainless steel is a safe, eco-friendly alternative to plastic and lined aluminum bottles.

The Story of FloydFest’s Water Steel Pints - The steel pints are used exclusively in the beer garden and have helped reduce the overall amount of trash produced at the festival by about 25% per person. With more than 15,000 attendees, that’s a big impact! Roger Pauley, field manager for Rorrer Well Drilling fills up at the water station. “The water from this well is way above average.” “Iron in the water is a big issue with wells in Floyd County but this well doesn’t have that. The water is very clean tasting.” Festival-goers also love the fact that it comes out of the well ice cold.

Roger Pauley sits on top of the well that is the water source for the Klean Kanteen refill station. Rorrer Well - With about 15,000 people at the festival, the refill stations are busy but the pumps were designed for high volume usage and the water pressure is always good. It takes just a few seconds to fill a 40oz Klean Kanteen, or other large container, so lines rarely ever occur. Rorrer drilled the 700-foot well in March of 2011. The well is just over 6 inches in diameter and holds 1.4 gallons per foot. The water stops about 88 feet below ground level, which means the well holds about 857 gallons. As the level in the well goes down, the aquifers that feed it refill the well at a rate of 15 gallons per minute. Water Testing – Some have concerns about nitrates in well water. They want their free water to be safe! Not to worry, the water in this well was tested extensively for biological and chemical contaminants including lead and E.Coli. Continue on page 14...

Supporting local can mean many things. For some of us it means supporting local merchants in our home town. For others it’s about buying food that is grown within 100 miles of home , and for many of us it’s about purchasing what is produced in our home state or at the very least, what is produced in our own country. At Green Label Organic we believe it is the spirit of intention that defines what we think and feel is “LOCAL”. Today it may be a locally grown potato, tomorrow it may be an organic cotton T-shirt sewn in North Carolina or a classic guitar made in Kalamazoo. They are each locally made and carry with them a certain authenticity.

FLOYD VIRGINIA publication

Supporting our local economy or what has become known as locavorism, is a movement that is taking shape without any defined organizers. It is coming from the heart. It is rising up from within. Some say it’s a reaction to the “big box” store mentality that has taken over our communities and that may be somewhat true, but we believe it is more a realization that we are losing touch with who we really are and where we came from. We yearn for healthy food, artisan quality, and the rejuvenation of Main Street. We want to look out for one another and help preserve our way of life. Simply stated, we are becoming more and more conscious about the choices we make. When we pick up something to buy we are re-learning and re-thinking about where it came from and what it took to produce it and get it here. At this point, the simple act of thinking before acting is a huge positive.

At Green Label Organic we act locally in as many ways as possible to produce our clothing and operate our small business. We take particular pride that all of our clothing is produced in the USA. Much of the manufacturing process takes place within 125 miles of our “headquarters” here in Floyd. From the very beginning one of our goals was to help employ some of the local textile workers here in the South who had lost their jobs to off-shoring. That, along with our commitment to organic cotton, organic farming, and sending positive, fun messages about environmental sustainability has lead us to create and operate our company, where we work every day to align people, the planet and profits. We encourage all of you to “think globally, act locally”, however you define it for your selves. Thank you for supporting local whenever possible. Jason Crolley (29) and Megan Clontz (25) said they love their Steel Pints... “The cup is a great souvenir, “ said Crolley, “and we definitely would not have brought any bottled water with us if we’d known about the refill station.”

FloydFest and Sustainability Floyd Fest Sustainability Coordinator Anne Bedarf (center) sifts through an incoming truck load of compost with her team. “The problem isn’t apathy,” she said. “People just need and want to know what to do. They’re so thankful and willing to help when you have a system set up for them.” She explained that when the festival first introduced Klean Kanteen Steel Pints last year, she wasn’t sure if festival goers would embrace the change. After the first day, they knew they’d made the right decision as they saw a huge reduction in trash and event goers loved the cups, to the point of buying so many as souvenirs that they sold out by the third day of the event. Lauren Kate Hurlocker and her friend Dylan Wicker, both 12, are two member of the brand new Junior Green Team… [they spend] most of their time in the Children’s Universe helping sort waste into cans labeled Landfill, Compost and Recycling. “This is my fifth year at Floyd fest and I really wanted to help,” said Lauren. “I want to help so we don’t have as much trash, for a cleaner earth. It’s really important to save more and re-use more.”

Minouche Holcomb (32) from Asheville, NC works for a brewery and said, “The cup is a great idea. I love the fact that I’m not drinking out of plastic.” Shown here enjoying a show at the Virginia Folklife Workshop Porch stage with her husband, Matt is Minouche and their 5-year-old son Finn. The Green Team has a total of seven staff members and 70 volunteers who do everything from help guide people on which bin to throw their waste into, to hauling, sorting and beginning the composting process. Last year 57% of all the waste generated at the festival was composted and the amount of trash produced went down by about 25% per person.

couples. Children 5 and under get in free! Director Julia Katz has set this show in the present day; the age of constant bombardment with social media, violent video games, and a yearning for personal connections: “For many years the show has been whitewashed to be this very sanitized, proper vision of love, and that’s not what the story is about. One thing that our production really highlights is just how relevant how adolescent the story is and how it speaks to our area’s people; how we’re modernizing, how there is a generational gap between this younger generation who grew up with fast-paced technology, and an older generation that still moves at a slower pace. That kind of generation gap can come out in this production, and I think it really does.” With its modern twist on a timeless love story, this production strives to bring Shakespeare’s message of peace and understanding into our modern age. As Romeo and Juliet strive to make personal connections in the age isolating technology, dark forces threaten to rip them apart. Hear some of the most beautiful words of love, spoken as if they were written yesterday.

A relaxing, secluded escape

The cast is mainly composed of theatre students at Virginia Tech including Hollie Huff as Juliet, and Wilson Murphy as Romeo. Other Tech students/alumni include Kathleen Boyle as The Nurse, Rocky Nunzio as The Prince, Cyrus Pynn as Paris, and Carter G. as Tybalt. Also in the cast is Open Air Shakespeare veteran Robert Smith (President of New River Stage) as Lord Capulet, and Floyd resident Cameron Woodruff. The cast also includes a number of high school students such as Stephanie Wollmann and Faith Buchner, fresh from their highly successful New River Stage production of “Peter Pan.” Transporting Shakespeare’s story to the 20th century is difficult enough; doing it outdoors with little scenery or props creates another series of challenges. Nevertheless, Producer Sarah Wylie explains the how performing Shake-

History of Floyd County Told Through Vintage Images-

Local Historical Society Pens New Book on Our Virginia County View our newest pictorial history, Floyd County ($21.99, 128 pages/softcover Arcadia Publishing. Available at local retailers, online bookstores, or through Arcadia Publishing at www.arcadiapublishing.com or (888) 313-2665)). It is by the Floyd County Historical Society and is part of the popular Images of America series. The book boasts more than 200 vintage images and memories of days gone by. Once a Kanawha hunting ground, the area that became Floyd County in 1831 was settled by people of English, German, Scots-Irish, French, and African descent, who established scattered farming communities. Agriculture was supplemented by work at sawmills and gristmills, distilling, storekeeping, and small-scale manufacturing and mining. Social life centered on family, church and schools. Through the first half of the 20th century, full-time farming diminished as automobiles and improved roads gave access to garment factories and other industries within Floyd and adjoining counties, and the population decreased sharply from a peak of 15,338 in 1900. Today, the population has rebounded with an influx of artisans, musicians, entrepreneurs, immigrant workers, retirees, and young families attracted by our county’s natural beauty and quality of life… In Floyd County, images from the historical society’s archive and private collections depict residents at home, at work, at play, and at worship from the mid-1800s through the 1950s. Giving Others a CHANCE Chance Harman Memorial Fund & Classic January 5, 2013 will mark the 6th Annual Chance Harman Classic at Floyd County High School. CHMF Totals: As of Summer 2012 the Chance Harman Memorial Fund has given out 26 scholarships to local high school students resulting in $46,500 and has donated $45,000 to Duke Medical Center for cancer research!

In honor of a young boy of Floyd County who battled cancer of the brain (see Chance’s Story here and online at www.chanceharman.org) , there is now each year a gathering of the community, plus a showcasing of basketball teams from local, private and prep schools who participate in the Classic. According to Dustin Hollandsworth, director of Chance Harman Memorial Fund (CHMF), “We came up with this idea shortly after Chance passed away. We really wanted a way to give back to the community that rallied behind Chance while he was sick. Brian [Harman, Chance’s dad and Floyd

was a great idea which would serve as a way to give back to the community. In January 2008, we held our first annual Chance Harman Classic. We sent out the invite to every school in the district. We told each school that they would receive a $1500.00 scholarship in memory of Chance if they we were able to have 4 games. Since then we have grown to 18 teams with 9 games all in one day! This year’s Classic will feature the Number one Junior in the Nation from Canada, Andrew Wiggins, who plays for Huntington Prep out of Huntington, West Virginia.” The Chance Harman Classic features a BBQ Dinner and a Silent Auction. Hollandsworth states that the auction has featured some very nice items in the past and continues to be a highlight of the event: “Last year we had a raffle with a Chance to win a 2012 Dodge Challenger. We are planning something really big for the 10th year in 2017! For this year’s classic, we are working on bringing in a very talented celebrity to perform the national anthem along with some NFL alumni to interact

It is the desire of CHMF to grow the fund. “Over the past 5 years we have been able to provide 26 scholarships to local high school seniors and donate just shy of $50,000 to Duke Medical Center for Pediatric Cancer Research. During the past 5 years, they have developed a vaccine for the type of Cancer that Chance had. Chance took chemotherapy while he was at Duke. Call Day or Night! Fencing is more than the construction of something to “hold in” livestock, pets or whatever the case may be. A proper fence is artwork in its own way. If properly built, a fence will enhance the appearance of your property and increase its value. A fence that we build is something you will be proud to look at. The reason we build fences is because, at the end of the day, we can see something more than just a fence. We can see beauty in the way it lays and flows with the land. We know it will be built right and we won’t be the only ones who will be proud of it. We give thanks to the Lord for the work, for the ability and for the opportunity to help our clients.

AMERICA’S ENERGY REVOLUTION

In the Spring 2012 issue we talked about how the lack of a coherent National That is enough to power over 13 million homes. Because utilities are retiring Energy Policy has resulted in a haphazard approach to energy conservation coal fired plants and replacing them with natural gas and clean renewables, and efficiency improvements. In this issue we are going to talk about the carbon emissions from power plants have gone DOWN for the first time in “hidden” revolution that is taking place all over America as individuals, busi- years. Utilities executives have seen the future and are adding wind, solar, bio nesses, and the federal government move forward while politicians stand still and squabble amongst themselves. BUSINESSES have realized that being energy efficient saves them (and you) money. Major retailers like IKEA, Costco and Target are installing large solar systems on their box stores to offset power usage. Wal-Mart’s relentless focus on reducing costs has now zeroed in on energy efficiency as their next priority. Over 100 Wal-Mart stores in California now have solar systems and the

mass and geothermal to their generation portfolios and finding that these “new”

technologies are helping to offset their base load and increase grid stability. COMMUNITY SOLAR is one of the most exciting new trends in renewable power generation. It’s a fact that most homeowners are not able to install a solar system on their roof to power their home. The roof may be shaded or facing the wrong direction or the upfront costs may be too high. Folks who rent their home or apartment are in the same situation but Community Solar

is coming to the rescue. This innovative concept allows people to purchase company plans to have over 1000 solar powered stores by 2020. The DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE is installing renewable energy systems

There are many more examples from across the nation about innovation

on many of its military bases in the US and the DOD has a goal of generating 3GW (gigawatts) of electricity by 2025. Like a for-profit business, the DOD aims to reduce costs by reducing the amount of power they buy from local utilities. Military planners always think ahead and the DOD’s primary focus is Energy Security thru the installation of microgrids. A microgrid generates electricity from PV modules for immediate use or stores it for future use. Microgrids will allow military bases to operate independent of the grid for extended periods without having to run backup generators. This allows them to maintain critical operations if the grid goes down for weeks or months and saves valuable diesel fuel for transportation needs. UTILITIES are moving into renewables in a big way. Almost all the new power plants built in the last few years are either PV or wind generation. Texas is the leader of the pack when it comes to wind farms and wind power now generates over 50 gigawatts of electricity, the equivalent of 44 coal fired plants, or 11 nuclear reactors.

and progress in all areas of renewable energy. As systems become larger and more common, costs are decreasing and reliability is increasing. Over 100,000 jobs have been created in the renewable energy field and each new installation brings the potential for more jobs. Individuals, businesses and the government are investing in America’s clean energy future today! THANK A UTILITY WORKER: Back in June the “Derecho” blew thru and shut down large swaths of the utility grid. The electricity we take for granted was suddenly gone for days. Utility linemen (and women) from all over the country worked endless hours in blazing temperatures to restore our power. It is a tough job but they got it done under very challenging conditions. Next time you see a utility worker, take a moment to thank them for their hard work and dedication. The author, David Zachow is a Master Electrician who lives in Floyd County. Conveniently located on Virginia Route 8, in view of the magnificent Blue Ridge Parkway, Tuggles Gap has been an active enterprise for more than seventy years. Started as a small store by General Boyd in the early 1940’s selling gas, grain and groceries (it was then known as Parkway Service Station), it was opened in conjunction with the completion of the Blue Ridge Parkway through the Floyd County section of Virginia. TRACTORS and CARS and CYCLES - OH MY!!!

That’s pretty much what you would say if you were traveling, as I was, along our popular highway routes 8 and 221 in Floyd County. Whether going or coming during the month of August, a long line of tractors, antique cars or motorcycles could be seen and appreciated, as several events celebrated the weather, the pending harvest or just being alive! A staple event in our County, the annual Floyd County Tractor Fun Run, took place on August 18th and generated about $6,000 for local leukemia patient Dillon Wood and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. It began at Arlie Thompson’s farm on Christiansburg Pike and meandered along country roads, through the heart of Town, to Marvin West’s farm for a lunch prepared by Mrs. Minnie West, and by back roads to return to the same place. From a spectator’s standpoint, it’s something to see…over the 6 years of the event, approximately $13,000 has been raised toward local charities.

By many accounts, the event exceeded expectations drawing young and old alike, and many families. People showed off their classics (1900-present) at the event and participated to swap parts or as vendors. A number of trophies were given to winners for a variety of show categories.

“It was a great event which drew a lot of visitors and participants from outside the area. The local economy benefited by so much activity. Everyone enjoyed the classics, and the music by the Blackberries, the Compton Family and Deer Run Drifters. A local Zumba group

was represented – a lot of fun. There is a lot of excitement about If you’re a tractor lover, plan to attend next year’s Fun Run – inforthe next car-related event”, said Jason Gallimore, lead promoter for mation at www.floydcountytractorfunrun.com. Festival Farm Productions, LLC. A first for Floyd County was this year’s Floyd Auto Fair at The American flags and the comradery of cyclists for weekend Chantilly Farm, held on August 25th and 26th. The event was hosted by Chasing SS Cars, a classic car restoration business motorcycle runs is a treat to behold. Whether along the Parkway owned by Erik Herdman and KC Murphy of Willis (ph. 540- or through Town, if you’re fortunate enough to be slowed by the 789-7898 or www.ChasingSScars.com). It featured classic convoy, you will see individuals riding for pleasure or to benefit cars, trucks, motorcycles and tractors, a parts swap meet, (like the ride for Floyd County’s Volunteer Fire Department, Stafood, music, games and more. tion 1 on August 25th). “We’ve wanted to do this in Floyd County for years, but we were always lacking a place to do it. We’re really excited to have found such a great venue and are really excited to be coordinating a great show that we hope the community will really enjoy,” commented KC. 46

Doug Thompson, on his blog www.blueridgemuse.com, storied the good ride for a good cause. I liked his short tribute in a September post to those who ride motorcycles. If you know the joys of riding and the open road, we salute you.

COUNTY SALES in FLOYD COUNTY - Dave What started as a hobby back in the early 1960s has become a thriving business for a family intent on preserving and promoting the best in authentic rural American music—or “Mountain Music” as it is known by many folks. Based in Floyd, Virginia since 1974, County Sales is now known world-wide as having the biggest selection of Bluegrass and Old Time CDs, DVDs, and books to be found anywhere. David Freeman, a railway mail clerk, used his vacation time to hunt down old 78rpm records by such artists as the Carter Family, Charlie Poole and Uncle Dave Macon—records that had pretty well disappeared by the early 1950s, but Floyd County turned out to be one of the best sources for such treasured “finds”. “I spent about two weeks in and around Floyd County in the early sixties” says Freeman. “Things were a little different back then” he notes, “but the people were really friendly, and I have lots of great memories from those trips, including making the old Moses Restaurant a destination for lunch each day, (meat & three for just 85 cents, as I recall!”) With some encouragement from a British magazine and various record collectors all across the USA, Freeman quit his day job in August of 1965, starting a record label— County Records—and his retail business (County Sales) with a typewriter, a tape machine and $ 500.00 in savings. “The mail trains were being discontinued one by one at the time, and I could see the writing on the wall” says Freeman, who enjoyed working on the R.P.O.s (Railway Post Offices), but fancied a career in the music business even more.

Moving from New York City to Floyd County in 1974 with his wife and first child, Freeman found that there was indeed a significant market for the music he loved but that the major record labels looked down on or mostly ignored. Near the Blue Ridge Parkway and really right in the heart of the mountains, County Sales grew, mostly by word of mouth, and its early local customers had stories to tell of visits to Floyd by such famous performers as Bill and Charlie Monroe and the legendary Charlie Poole. (County Sales actually occupies the old PIX Theatre building where the 1930s and 40s hosted shows by Bill & Charlie Monroe, Roy Hall, and many of the biggest names in Country music). “In the 1970s there were no CDs or DVDs—it was all LPs (long playing vinyl)” says Freeman, who now expresses amazement at the number of well produced records that come out each month, many of them featuring extremely talented teenagers. “In that respect the music is in very good hands these days, and there are more Bluegrass and Old Time records coming out than ever before—there is really a wealth of great music out there, and plenty of fans to enjoy it” says Freeman, whose shop is visited almost daily by fans and customers from many foreign countries. As Freeman says, “It’s a great feeling to be able to guide folks to the music they love, whether it be Flatt & Scruggs, Molly O’Day, The Carter Family, Hank Williams, the Delmore Brothers or Alison Krauss”.

According to Jacksonville Center’s Executive Director John McEnhill, this event is being birthed out of a need for a significant fundraiser for the Center. While The Jax has several fundraising methods, they are limited as far as on-site or outdoor events, especially related to parking. So, Floyd Oktoberfest organizers met with the Special Events Team of Chantilly Farm to arrange for the site for this year’s event. McEnhill says, “Chantilly Farm is a wonderful festival site. Everything we need as far as space and utility is there, and we have room to grow”. McEnhill notes that this event would not be possible without the help of board members and volunteers. He particularly credited local business owner Tom Ryan for his assistance: “We are grateful for the support and The Republic of Floyd and Tom Ryan with organizing this event, particularly with selecting quality microbreweries for inclusion in Oktoberfest, as well as helping with event logistics and promotion.” 52
