Hello there!

GROUP EDITORIAL DIRECTOR

LIZ O’REILLY (editorial@fact-magazine.com)

It gives me great pleasure to introduce myself as the new Editor of FACT Bahrain. While I’m excited for what’s in store, I’ve got big shoes to fill and what better month than February – the month of love – to be starting out on this adventure. I hope you and I will forge a friendship based on love and trust in the time to come.

I find thoughtful gifts to be such a beautiful love language and so, for this issue, we’ve compiled a gifting list for Valentine’s Day. Our cover story also features romantic dining experiences on the island and a bunch of interesting ideas for dates – the whole package!

At FACT, we’re always on the lookout for interesting gadgets. Our second feature lists our favourites launched at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show.

As culture enthusiasts, we’re excited for the 17th edition of Spring of Culture that will be launched later this month. From music concerts, poetry nights and film festivals to workshops, art exhibitions and historical tours, there’s so much to look forward to. Our motoring section features the all-new Bestune B70S, a powerful SUV with a sporty character. We also present the latest Grand Wagoneer – we were there for the launch event in Dubai.

My colleagues and I had the pleasure to dine at some really amazing restaurants this month. We also enjoyed a staycation at the luxurious Address Beach Resort Bahrain and are thrilled to share all our experiences. Speaking of beach, some of us started the year on a high note with a holiday in Nova Maldives, which is featured in our travel section. Our regulars from films, music and books to fashion and New & Now are equally exciting.

I hope you enjoy the February issue and, until next time, stay safe and stay blessed!

STRIKING PORTRAITS

Lebanese photographer Camille Zakharia and Bahraini architect Ali Ismail Karimi are engaging the local community and public spaces through art.

Launched in December 2017, Photos à la Chair, a homegrown initiative, has been bringing people from different walks of life together. It’s an art movement of sorts, where founding duo Camille and Ali collaborate with artists on the island, from painters to furniture designers and photographers, to create striking portraits.

The upcoming session will happen on February 10, with Applied Histories (@appliedhistories on Instagram) and Isa Najem (@isa.najem on Instagram) in Ain Um Huwais – in the middle of the farms in Buri area. Aside from this one, you can watch out for, perhaps, one more before the season comes to an end; monthly sessions are organised from November to March. So far, there have been 17.

Based on the discussion between the founders and participating artists, a backdrop or architectural installation is set up at a mutually agreed location. Then, the details are announced to the general public, who can visit the spot within the set time frame to get themselves photographed, chat with the artists or even simply observe. A few occasions have seen visitors from other GCC countries.

While Photos à la Chair has no reservations about welcoming artists and visitors from all over the world, the project is strictly Bahrain-based for now and is as local as local gets. The idea is to engage the community and promote a casual conversation around art. It offers an informal space, which is unlike most artistic initiatives in the Kingdom that are more formal or gallerybased. Additionally, it offers scope to highlight and promote the island’s beautiful locales, many of which are hidden gems, as people don’t know about them or don’t visit them often.

Camille produces a self-published book for each session and 2023 will have books too. The books document the project, as well as the different communities and landscapes of Bahrain. If you’re an artist who wants to collaborate, a lover of art or simply a spectator, this major cog in the local contemporary art scene is a platform you really don’t want to miss. ✤

NEW BURGER JOINT IN TOWN

Pickl, the popular Dubai-born brand has opened its first restaurant in the Kingdom at Al Aali Mall.

Foodies in Bahrain, particularly burger enthusiasts, are in for a treat. Pickl at Al Aali Mall is now open, in partnership with Zayani Foods, the food and beverage arm of Al Zayani Investments Group. Diners can enjoy a range of burgers: beef, chicken and plant-based, free from preservatives, hormones and antibiotics. Guests can create their own cheese burgers using a variety of toppings and sauces or enjoy their chicken sandos (sandwiches) in a range of spice options - Plain, Medium-ish, Feel the Heat, Nashville and Reaper! Further available as part of the menu are Pickl’s indulgent Gooder Milkshakes, an unmissable selection of loaded fries and fresh fried chicken tenders. The restaurant, with floor-to-ceiling windows on all sides and Pickl’s signature pink and teal colours on full show, is a stunning addition to Seef District. From the iconic ‘ORDER HERE’ and ‘PICK UP’ signs to the double-height ceilings and raw finishes, the Bahrain outlet fully translates the original restaurants’ modern and industrial feel.

Steve Flawith, Founder and CEO of Pickl, said: “Bahrainis have been shouting for Pickl for a long time, so we’re delighted to finally

give them what they want. Having such a strong local partner like Zayani Foods ensures we’ll be able to give the people of Bahrain the one-of-a-kind Pickl experience.”

Majid Khalid Alzayani, Managing Director of Zayani Foods, said: “We have been actively looking to expand our variety of offerings at Zayani Foods. We believe Pickl will be a perfect fit to our market given the variety of its offer and track record in the UAE, and are excited to launch the brand in Bahrain.”

The opening follows a Burgers for Bahrain activation in the UAE, which allowed Bahrain CPR holders to eat for free. Activations held across Bahrain include Dunk for Pickl at Up and Down Trampoline Park and Padel for Pickl at Padel Bahrain, with winners taking home vouchers they can reclaim for burgers at Pickl. ✤ GO: FOLLOW @PICKL.BH

TASTE OF ITALY

Nespresso and global Italian fashion icon Chiara Ferragni have collaborated to release a limited-edition collection.

Nespresso has expanded its Ispirazione Italiana range with a limited-edition collection, inspired by the country’s vibrant coffee culture. Alongside renowned historian, Filippo Cosmelli, Chiara Ferragni starts her adventure into the fascinating history of Rome’s coffee culture and the tradition and creativity of the beautiful city. Together, the duo visit iconic locations, including Antico Caffè Greco where they enjoy a Roma espresso and uncover Italian roasting traditions. Chiara’s journey continues through the city of Milan, the true inspiration behind the design, taste and notes of the Milano Intenso coffee, stemming from historic locations such as Villa Necchi, Palazzo Montedoria and Duomo Cathedral. The Duomo gold spires and Villa Necchi’s bespoke geometric deep green design with gold accents, appear throughout the new capsule. The pair’s journey has been made into a short film divided into four parts.

Commenting on her collaboration with Nespresso, Chiara said: “My love of coffee and Italy knows no limits, so I jumped at the chance to collaborate again with the dear Nespresso family to co-develop this limited-edition collection. The new range has been inspired by the creativity and rich culture of Milan and I am so excited to bring to life such great tasting coffee with

beautiful accessories and machines for coffee lovers to enjoy wherever they are.”

Milano Intenso strikes a balance between jammy, fruity notes and a shimmer of spice. Igniting the senses with a classic combination of roasted-cereal and cocoa notes, coffee drinkers can expect hints of bread and dark chocolate with every sip they take. For a momentous tasting experience from start to finish, it’s recommended that the coffee is sipped as a cappuccino, giving off hints of pepper, berry and funky fruity notes.

The launch also features Nespresso’s limited-edition Touch Travel Mug in a sleek gold colour, and a set of two matte black and gold espresso cups. Coffee lovers can also get their hands on the new CitiZ coffee machine with an Italian twist – wrapped in a striking artwork bringing to mind Milan’s Villa Necchi Campiglio. Ispirazione Italiana is available online and in Nespresso Boutiques. ✤

ACTS OF LOVE

It’s that time of year when our thoughts turn to love and, whether you’re just starting out as a couple or in a long-term partnership, it’s the perfect excuse to plan a really amazing date to show that special someone just how much you care. We’ve come up with our Fantastic Five ideas for dates with a difference.

A Couple That Cooks Together…

There’s nothing more romantic than sharing a meal. Or perhaps there is – cooking a meal together. It’s such a bonding moment over flavour and fun. Roots and Shoots, an organic farm in Hamala, offers cooking classes with the famous Chef Susy Massetti. A restaurateur, she’s credited with bringing the farm to table concept to the island so, you can be assured of quality ingredients and top-notch flavours.

A Fun Escape

Embark on an adventure together with some escape room fun. Crack the code as a team – Escape Code, located in Nakheel Centre and City Centre Bahrain, offers a challenge. You can choose from a wide range of themes such as Prison Break, Alice In Wonderland, Game of Stones, The Haunted House… VR Escape Games are available too. The Great Escape Challenge in Country Mall, Budaiya is another option to explore.

Dive Into Love

Those who’ve experienced deep sea diving know that time, in a way, stops down there. You become more aware of each breath and alive to each moment. Now, imagine sharing this moment

with your loved one – priceless! The island is home to many diving schools such as ScubaMaster, Into The Blue Dive Center and New Way Diving & Sea Tours that teach diving and organise recreational dives at different sites around Bahrain.

Dynamic Dancing

Remember the scene from the movie Dirty Dancing that had audiences swooning over Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey? That could be you! Well, almost. Nothing gets things going like a steamy dance session. Put your best foot forward this Valentine’s Day and sign up for classes together. Jaff Fit Studios in Zinj teaches a range of dance forms including salsa and bachata. Al Mardi Salsa Studio in Manama is another place to try.

Get Away

Move away from the hustle bustle and spend some quality time together. Al Dar Islands, Bahrain’s natural beach resort located just 10 minutes by boat from Sitra Fisherman’s Port, offers the nearest getaway. Book a chalet for an overnight stay. During the day, you can enjoy a range of activities or simply relax in a beach hut. If you’re looking for something farther away, consider a night’s stay at Hawar Islands.

As our lives become ever more tech heavy, it’s very easy to suffer from gadget FOMO (fear of missing out). Spotted your pal with the latest contraption, fed up with everyone else’s life seeming so much easier than yours thanks to their tech-savvy attitudes? That’s where the Consumer Electronics Show, held in Las Vegas, Nevada, comes in. We’ve rounded up some of the products that caught our eye at this year’s event.

OPERATIONAL ADVANTAGE LIMITLESS ACCESSIBILITY

A smart robotic wearable suit that helps create safer workplaces.

Sony has revealed a highly customisable accessibility controller for players with disabilities.

German Bionic, a robotics firm and the world’s first company to deliver connected exoskeletons for the workplace, showcased the sixth generation of its exoskeleton development with the Apogee. The Apogee is a strikingly designed next-generation smart robotic wearable tool that’s AI-supported and built for long-term use at the workplace. It provides support during lifting and walking, for up to 30kg when handling heavy loads.

The Apogee is best utilised in tasks involving lifting, unloading, static holds and walking, resulting in added energy and relief to its wearers.

Designed to be lighter and more comfortable than its predecessors, the Apogee broadens the areas of its application in the workplace and protects the health and wellbeing of workers by providing additional tools to add relief, support and safety to frequent, labour-intensive tasks.

The device works by being attached onto the back and thighs and is easy to use and unobtrusive, while allowing for no disruption to natural movements or workflows.

The exoskeleton suits are fully connected and provide users and businesses access to real-time data in order to aid in safety management and further optimise functional capabilities. Businesses can monitor device usage and safety practices through German Bionic’s IO insight platform.

The Apogee can also be customised with accessories tailored to cater to a specific team’s requirements. ✤

With the aim of making the PlayStation 5 an accessible platform to everyone, Sony unveiled the much-awaited adaptable controller code-named Project Leonardo for gamers with limited motor control.

It is Sony’s first foray into accessible gaming equipment and has been developed with key contributions from accessibility experts, community members and game developers.

Project Leonardo is a highly customisable controller kit that works ‘out of the box’ to help players with disabilities play games more easily, comfortably and for longer periods.

Accessibility experts and charities such as AbleGamers, Special Effect and Stack Up, that are dedicated towards inclusion and support of gamers with disabilities, were consulted in the design process of this highly configurable controller. It works in tandem with many third-party accessibility accessories and integrates with the PS5 console to open up new ways of gaming.

Project Leonardo’s design choices address common challenges faced by many players with limited motor control, including difficulty holding a controller for long periods, accurately pressing small clusters of buttons or triggers or positioning thumbs and fingers optimally on a standard controller.

The controller includes a robust kit of swappable components, including a variety of analogue stick caps and buttons in different shapes and sizes. Players can use these components to craft a wide array of control layouts to suit their preference. These components allow players to find a configuration that works best for their strength, range of motion and specific physical needs. ✤

TRANSMISSION UNLEASHED

LG reveals the world’s first wireless TV.

MOBILITY REIMAGINED

Sony and Honda have revealed a new prototype EV for their joint venture car brand.

The new LG Signature OLED M3 comes with Zero Connect technology. This allows for superior picture and sound quality transmission wirelessly; a separate Zero Connect box can send real-time audio and video up to 4K HDR 120Hz from up to 10 metres away. Further, it provides greater flexibility when installing and connecting – the 97-inch panel requires only a regular power cable connection.

The Zero Connect box comes with multiple ports for plugging in commonly used HDMI devices, such as cable/satellite set-top boxes and gaming consoles. It can also connect wirelessly with compatible soundbars for additional cable-free convenience. To ensure the seamless transfer of data from the box to the TV, LG has developed an algorithm that instantly identifies the optimal transmission path. The algorithm also helps to minimise transmission errors or disruptions as it can recognise changes in the immediate environment, such as people or pets moving around the room, and switch paths accordingly.

Additionally, for maximum signal strength, the Zero Connect box’s antenna can be easily rotated and/or tilted to align with the TV’s location.

For maximum usability, the box is voice-recognition enabled, allowing users to turn on and manage the M3 and connected devices using simple, spoken commands. ✤

THE ALL-NEW GRAND WAGONEER UNVEILED

FACT attended the launch of the 2023 Grand Wagoneer, cruising all the way to Fujairah City, UAE, in this iconic American SUV.

This month, we were fortunate enough to be invited by the multinational automotive manufacturing corporation, Stellantis, to attend the launch of the legendary Grand Wagoneer, at Ceasars Palace Dubai, on Bluewater Island. We would like to thank Stellantis for their wonderful hospitality and for the opportunity to experience the new Grand Wagoneer in such a comfortable and welcoming environment.

Exterior

The moment the full-sized SUV was unveiled, we could see that the 2023 Grand Wagoneer is a modern interpretation of an American-made icon. The exceptional craftsmanship that has gone into the design of this striking vehicle was immediately obvious to all in attendance.

The Grand Wagoneer’s bold new exterior design has been crafted with a wide stance and features a classic yet refined silhouette. At the imposing front end sits a distinctive hood and prominent front grille combination, the latter featuring knurled finishes on the rings. Complementing these grand features is the unique LED lighting, including premium LED headlamps and foglamps. Shifting to the flanks, we could see that, like the windscreen, large windows have been incorporated into the design, greatly enhancing outward visibility. Paying homage to the original Grand Wagoneer are the clean roofline and A-line that run

around the vehicle in its entirety. A panoramic tri-pane sunroof allows an abundance of natural light inside the vehicle and offers greenhouse-like views. Chunky, 22-inch aluminium wheels add to the SUV’s rugged appearance and hint at its off-road capabilities.

At the rear, LED tail lamps complete the full suite of exterior LED lights, stretching from the rear quarter panels to the hands-free power liftgate.

Interior

On entering the SUV, we were immediately taken by the abundance of space on offer. In fact, the 2023 Grand Wagoneer boasts the best-in-class overall passenger volume, amongst many other bragging rights.

The fully digital cockpit is jam-packed with cutting-edge tech, is immaculately laid out and features comfortable captain’s chairs. The second-row seating also features captain’s chairs, access to which is made simple by the power release Tip ‘n Slide function that creates more space for passengers to get to their seats. The third row can recline and fold flat, making it easy to configure for either passengers or luggage.

This convenient internal setup, coupled with the four-zone HVAC system, ensured we were completely relaxed, cool and comfortable as we set off on the three-hour test drive to Fujairah City.

BEHIND THE WHEEL •

Infotainment & Technology

As we effortlessly cruised en-route to our destination, we had time to take in the seemingly endless cutting-edge tech, housed in the interior of this remarkable SUV.

The 2023 Grand Wagoneer is equipped with next-generation innovations including the new advanced Uconnect 5 system. Other notable features include a frameless digital cluster, a rear seat monitoring camera and a premium McIntosh audio system. Additionally, we were informed that this new model is available with up to 75 inches of total digital display screen area, including nearly 45 inches of total screens along the front dashboard. We found the 12-inch reconfigurable touchscreen display with split-screen capabilities to be most impressive. This setup features the before mentioned, all-new Uconnect 5 system and includes wi-fi capability, full smartphone connectivity, Alexa, access to hundreds of thousands of apps, TV shows and movies, amongst many other great options. In addition 11 USB ports, and multiple passenger screens are located in both the front and the rear.

Safety

The artisans responsible for the Grand Wagoneer’s design have included an extensive range of leading-edge safety technologies and driver assistance systems. These include a head-up display (HUD), hands-free active driving assist, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, intersection collision assist and drowsy driver detection, along with turn-by-turn navigation and much, much more. The fully digital rear view mirror provides an unobstructed view of the road behind and can revert to a traditional reflective mirror by toggling the switch underneath.

Performance

The 2023 model is powered by a new 3.0-litre Hurricane twinturbo, incline, six-cylinder engine, combined with a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission. Cruising along, the abundance of power and acceleration on offer was made obvious, as we witnessed the SUV effortlessly eat up the freeway all the way to Fujairah City.

Although we couldn’t fully test the vehicle’s 4x4 capabilities on this excursion, we were informed that this model has three available 4x4 systems, along with an available Quadra-Lift air suspension and Selec-Terrain traction management system. This means there is almost no off-road terrain that this premium SUV cannot conquer. Any other SUV in this segment would have a tough time keeping up with it in the rough. ✤

THE POWERFUL ALL-NEW BESTUNE B70S

FACT spent a day in the 2023 B70S, a surprisingly exciting affair that has forever altered our view of the Chinese automotive industry.

• ISLAND RIDES

Bestune is an automotive marque owed by Chinese automaker, First Auto Works (FAW) Group. Officially launched in 2006, this up-andcoming brand is developing a solid international reputation for producing high-quality vehicles complete with novel features.

Even though there are many impressive cars being produced in China these days, vehicles from this region have a lingering reputation for being of a lower calibre than their Western or Asian counterparts. FACT can now confidently confirm that this outdated perspective has been completely debunked with the introduction of the Bestune B70S. This month, thanks to the team at Al Haddad International Motors, we spent time in the 2023 Bestune B70S, a novel and informative experience.

Exterior

As a crossover between the B70 saloon and the T99, the prominent exterior design of this compact coupe SUV has a distinctive sporty character to it, one that entices you to get out onto the road.

The front end of the vehicle comes complete with a beast claw aerodynamic kit, giving it an aggressive and futuristic look. The sleek nature of this small SUV is complemented by its sporty front lip and eye-catching, Dagger-axe type 2.0 split lights, that sit proudly on either side of the grille.

The confident lines flow along the flanks, further emphasising the modern design, whilst large side mirrors and built-in roof racks add to the functional nature of the vehicle.

At the back end, two sporty exhaust pipes and a complex, flying buttress design rear spoiler, further emphasise the athletic nature of this inviting crossover. A novel light bar adds yet another fashionable touch, finishing off an already impressive exterior with a flourish.

Interior

Slipping inside the all-new B70S, the heavy thuds of the doors closing behind us, reconfirmed the quality of the car’s build and its materials. We were welcomed by a racing-grade interior, complete with comfortable front seats, that were low-set and offered plenty of support. Further adding to the car’s sporty flavour is the flat-bottomed steering wheel that not only feels great in hand, but houses controls for various in-car functions. The cabin felt even larger than it looked from the outside, meaning plenty of head and shoulder room for all passengers. The spacious nature of the interior is complemented by the inclusion of quality materials throughout, along with a 440-litre storage area. This capacity can be greatly increased with the rear seating folded flat. This area is accessed via an electric-powered tailgate. These features all add to the functional character and family-orientated design of this crossover.

Infotainment & Technology

The cockpit of the stylish B70S looks both luxurious and hightech. The display features dual 12.3-inch LCD screens, one for the instrument panel, and one for the infotainment system. Additionally, there is an eight-inch semi-touch screen, dedicated

to operating the air conditioning, in the centre control panel. The centre control screen features an impressive built-in Bestune D-LIFE 5.2 system, that supports functions including voice control and car navigation, along with vehicle health butler – a vehicle health monitoring system. All these screens are of an exceptional quality, sporting clear graphics and a user-friendly interface. Further advanced technologies include intelligent key, and 360-degree panoramic images.

Performance

The 2023 models come with two engine options. A 170hp, 1.5-litre turbo, coupled with a seven-speed DCT, and our test model, a 2.0-litre turbo, coupled with a six-speed automated manual transmission. Both these options are front-wheel drive. There is also talk of a plug-in hybrid version (PHEV) in the works. Our 2.0-litre provided nothing less than an exceptional on-road performance. The acceleration of this crossover was unexpected, powering from 0-100km/h in seven seconds flat. Not bad for a compact SUV. When we shifted the car into ‘S mode’ it felt as if we had been fired out of a cannon, and we could have effortlessly reached the top speed of 230km/h.

Safety

Safety wise, the 2023 B70S not only provides excellent stability and control, but includes eight safety systems and 23 active

HIGH PERFORMANCE UNLEASHED

The BMW M3 CS has a unique character profile and comes with the ability to provide the undiluted ‘M’ feeling that excites drivers over every mile on the road as well as on the track. The powertrain concept for this model for the premium midsize segment combines a 550hp, six-cylinder in-line engine with an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and the M xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system. This nextlevel setup allows for a 0 to 100km/h time of 3.4 seconds. The vehicle comes with the M Driver’s Package as standard and has an electronically limited top speed of 302km/h. The engine is capable of producing peak torque of 650Nm on tap from just 2,750rpm and sustains it all the way to 5,950rpm. The model’s more power/less weight formula allows for its compelling performance qualities. It draws its power from a specially upgraded version of the high-revving, sixcylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology developed for the BMW M3 and BMW M4 models. Selecting the Sport or Sport+ modes in the M Setup menu dials up the drive sound to produce a note with unmissable racing car undertones. Extensive, model-specific lightweight design measures play a major part in moulding the performance qualities and exclusive character of the new BMW M3 CS. The use of components made from carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) both inside and out plays a key role. The various lightweight design measures bring about a total weight saving of some 20kg compared to the BMW M3 Competition Sedan with M xDrive.

The cylinder head has a 3D-printed core, allowing the coolant ducts to be routed in an optimum arrangement for temperature management that would be impossible to achieve using conventional metal casting methods. The system of oil supply is designed to handle the specific challenges of track use, as is the cooling system.

The Frozen Solid White metallic paint finish available for the exterior is exclusive to the model. Signal Green solid, Brooklyn Grey metallic and Sapphire Black metallic are available as alternative exterior colours. The BMW M3 CS will be built in a limited run at BMW Group Plant Munich from March, with its phased launch getting underway the same month. ✤

It allows you to see your own and other people’s dreams become reality, whether it is a new hotel or a new outlet or facility. As a hotelier I have an opportunity daily to excel and improve.

The Elite Hospitality Group is a well-known name in the Kingdom. Please tell us about the company’s properties and what makes your portfolio stand out.

We are a home-grown hospitality brand, one of the first, in Bahrain since the early ‘90s. All our hotels are unique in being all-suite properties offering space combined with facilities which suit both short- and long-term guests; be it families or leisure and business travellers. We cover it all! All our hotels are V- or U-shaped, which gives the best views from most rooms. Elite Resort & Spa is blessed to have a sea view from all of its suites. Elite Seef Residence & Hotel has an amazing and special poolside outlet Captain Jack’s with lovely landscaping, and Elite Crystal Hotel offers some of the best night clubs.

What does a typical day look like for you?

My day begins by reviewing all night reports and financials from our various properties. My schedule at the office is always busy

with back-to-back meetings internally with my colleagues. Along with meetings with potential and existing clients and existing partners. I directly oversee our e-commerce segment. Also I check ongoing progress on various operational matters and market development and growth. Discussing and evaluating new opportunities with my team along with proposals, analysing the latest market trends and reviewing prospective partners and more. Every minute is exciting!

What are the biggest challenges of your role and how do you overcome these?

The major challenge in the hotel industry is to have a winning edge that makes you stronger in a very competitive market. Bahrain competes with markets including the UAE, Oman and now even KSA. As COO, my role is to understand the pressures of operations on my team and to support rather than lead, it’s a 24 x 7 need. Our module of hotels has very often been replicated, that’s why we keep on updating and adapting new technologies based on market trends and demands. The key is planning with positive adaptation towards change.

You have been in Bahrain for almost 20 years, what are the greatest positive changes you have witnessed?

I have witnessed in the last 20 years a significant growth in Bahrain. Bahrain has emerging markets, which create a great opportunity to expand further especially since we have major international events, such as F1, and other major sports events and exhibitions which attract international players, such as Ironman and various other cultural events. I strongly believe that the many partnerships between the government and private sector will enable us more to support Bahrain’s economy and growth. With our tourism sector now becoming an independent ministry, we hope to participate in exploring ideas with the Tourism Ministry, to help Bahrain perform better. ✤

ISLAND INSIDER

You have been in automotive sales for almost a decade now. What sparked your interest to pursue a career in this field and what are the things that most inspire you working in this sector?

I started my career in the automotive industry in late 2014 and from the first starting point I fell in love with it. I began as a sales consultant and I have always had this passion for cars throughout the journey. Back in 2021, I became the assistant sales manager and, at the beginning of this year I was given a bigger challenge to lead the Italian brands (Fiat & Alfa Romeo) in Bahrain. I think what inspires me most in this field is the opportunity to meet different

people; being part of their choice in their preferred vehicles and experiencing the way they feel during and throughout the sales process.

Congratulations on your promotion! Are there any major developments that you plan on bringing about in this new role –in the company or in general? Thanks. My main goal is to promote these brands and successfully reintroduce these iconic Italian vehicles into the local market again. I would love to see these Italian-made cars being used and running around on the Kingdom’s roads. In addition, I am working hand-in-hand with all the

stakeholders related to the brand to make sure my plan of diffusing these vehicles onto the roads will work and these cars will be loved by the people and their new owners.

In terms of the car industry, what surprises can we expect in this region, specifically Bahrain, in 2023?

To be honest it is difficult to provide predictions in the automotive field, however, I think the slow introduction of electric cars might commence and this can lead to the beginning of a transition period which can, in one way or another, cause fluctuation in the automotive market.

• VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN
Brian Becher, Executive Chef of CUT by Wolfgang Puck and re/ ASIAN CUISINE at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, talks developments at the restaurants.

You’ve been steering the kitchens at CUT by Wolfgang Puck and re/ ASIAN CUISINE since 2017. Tell us about how these outlets have evolved in keeping with the brand, food and guest-experience wise?

The most meaningful way in which CUT and re/ ASIAN have developed in the past six years is by becoming more fun and approachable. We faced some challenges connecting with the market in 2015 and 2016 because we were focused on luxury offerings and service. What we came to realise is that our guests were looking to have a good time out, plain and simple. No one wanted pretentious service interactions, they wanted personality. I truly believe it is the genuine, sincere service interactions in which our team engage nightly that set us apart. And our guests find just as much satisfaction from a well-made sandwich or perfectly executed Mac n' Cheese as they do from the world's finest beef or caviar — which I also managed to make fun by placing Ossetra [caviar] atop a grilled cheese sandwich. Our ethos is now very simple: we serve food we like to people we like. It does not have to be any more complicated than that.

Are there any specific developments that you’ve led and are proud of?

Absolutely. The Sushi Bar addition we launched at re/ ASIAN in late 2021. We were able to take advantage of the pandemicinitiated shut down at re/ ASIAN and evaluate a clear path forward for the restaurant. We asked ourselves what we thought was missing in the Asian food scene in Bahrain. The answer was clear... a truly authentic sushi experience with a focus on impeccable product quality. It ended up being quite the project as there was no fresh tuna from Japan on offer previously in Bahrain. But we

were committed to the vision and we created the supply chain with the belief that our guests would appreciate the quality. And the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

How has Bahraini culture and cuisine inspired your cooking and influenced your palate?

I have been influenced by local cuisine in the flavour make-up of our dishes. For example, we have great local lamb here, and the local lamb dishes highlight that great flavour. We apply that to our Szechuan Lamb Dumplings at re/ ASIAN. Our goal was to get as much lamb flavour as possible on the plate, so our sauce is a broken vinaigrette of sorts which consists of rendered lamb fat balanced by Chinkiang black vinegar and chillis. Ultimately, we are cooking for our guests, so the flavour needs to reflect what they want. And I could wax poetic for hours over our Bahraini fish. I find it so strange to see restaurants serving imported salmon when we are surrounded by so many great local fresh fish. Especially at this time of year. We are serving rabeeb, shari, faskar, sobaity, andag, local clams and jash at our restaurants right now. And my favourite Bahraini fish is currently in season, sikken. Sikken also happens to be our Sushi Chef, Kiyoshi's favourite. In Japan, it is known as Kuro Kampachi.

The last time we checked, Korean Fried Chicken was your signature dish. Can we expect a strong contender for it in 2023?

Yes indeed. We stuff a whole black bass with sticky rice (lo mai) and wok fry it. This is served for two at re/ ASIAN. It has become the fan favourite by far. I think it resonates with a lot of people because we all grow up eating some iteration of fish and rice. We just present it in a new way and it has been very well received. ✤

AN ASIAN ADVENTURE

BO.SABI is well known for its handcrafted signature drinks. Melissa Nazareth discovered that it also serves some of the best food in the Kingdom.

They say first impressions count and I was mighty pleased with BO.SABI at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa. Located on the ground floor, the restaurant exhibits a modern interior with Asian-inspired trimmings; bamboo decor, a thatched roof supported by wooden beams, traditional ceiling fans… you can dine outdoors now that the weather is pleasant. However, there’s a spacious indoor section too, with a bar. The menu offers a variety of dishes across different cuisines such as Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese, Malaysian and Thai. We started our lunch with the Tuna Salad, which was light and refreshing. The tuna, encrusted with black and white sesame seeds, was seared on the sides and pink in the centre. It had an umami flavour and complemented the accompanying greens and pickled veggies. The dressing, slightly sweet and fragrant from the lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves and red chilli, brought the dish together. Next came what was called the Rainbow Roll and rightly so! A purple flower petal adorned each roll, a canvas of coral-hued salmon, pink tuna, pearl-white hammour and emerald avocado – immaculate! Having eaten with our eyes, we dived in with our chopsticks and discovered that it tasted as good as it looked. We could tell the fish was fresh – same for all the seafood dishes –and the ingredients used were of a high quality. What particularly stood out for me was that even though the dishes were plated aesthetically, the main focus was on the quality and taste. Something warm was in order and so our hosts presented the Peking Duck at our table. I wanted to try the bird on its own first. Unlike my past experiences where the duck was dry as a desert, this was succulent with a crispy skin and without a gamey aftertaste. The dipping sauce, a mix of sweet and salty hoisin and sweet and sour plum sauce, offered a touch of acidity, which complemented the protein and fresh julienned vegetables. While the pancake wraps prepared by the chef were perfectly balanced, we enjoyed making our own too with our preferred ratio of meat

to sauce to veggies. If the Peking Duck was a terrestrial treat, our next dish, Ise Ebi, was an oceanic delight. A deep coral grilled lobster sat on a blanket of crimson ginger sauce. The meat was sweet and bouncy, elevated by an unmatched buttery goodness. No Asian adventure is complete without dumplings and so, we were delighted to see a plate of chicken Gyoza make its way to our table. Pockets of juicy minced chicken, they were almost like soup dumplings – the broth was exceedingly aromatic. The chilli black bean side that came with them deserves a special mention. It tasted like candied chunks of chilli flakes, sweet from the black bean sauce and doused in a spicy chilli oil. We learned that guests order it with other dishes too – one can’t blame them – it’s addictive! For the mains, first we had Pad Thai. The mark of a good Pad Thai is a balance of sweet, sour and salty. This dish was on point. The textures threw us off completely – crunchy vegetables, silken tofu and egg, and chewy rice noodles with a bit of bite. All the elements were dressed perfectly in a sweetish and zingy tamarind sauce. I’m not a fan of nuts in my food but thanks to BO.SABI, I’m now transformed – the groundnuts, toasty and earthy were the star of this dish for me.

We simply had to order the Thai Chicken Green Curry and boy were we glad we did! The curry itself was creamy and coconutty, made intensely flavourful by an army of aromatics from Thai basil and galangal to roasted onion and kaffir lime leaves. The chicken was exceedingly tender and succulent. We enjoyed this creation with a side of steamed rice topped with toasted garlic slices. Desserts included the Japanese Cheese Cake and Thai Mango Sticky Rice. The former was like a vanilla sponge cake, airy and light, and served with a side of tarte red plum compote and

creamy passion fruit custard. It wasn’t too sweet, which was great and paired perfectly with my coffee. The latter is a musttry if you like traditional desserts. At first, I tasted only the mango – sweet and juicy. But when I gave it a few seconds, a subtle yet promising coconut flavour emerged. We also tried different varieties of mochi – I recommend the vanilla flavoured one. BO.SABI offers live entertainment almost every night. I’ll definitely be returning especially when they revamp their menu to feature new signature dishes while retaining old favourites. They also host private events and provide catering services – you can customise the menu to suit your preference. ✤

A DELIGHTFUL DAY

Not sure where to head next Friday? Fernanda Langhammer and her family enjoyed a sumptuous brunch at Sofitel Bahrain and she thinks it’s a must-try.

What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you have the following mix: Friday + Food + Bahrain? Brunch, of course! With this lovely weather, there is nothing better than going for one of the island’s most popular Friday brunches, the Grand Friday Brunch at Sofitel Bahrain

Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa. The grand bit on its name kind of summarises the whole experience, but I will give you more details below, so you truly understand its meaning.

Friday is my favourite day of the week and knowing I was heading to Sofitel’s brunch was the best motivation to get me out of bed in a good mood. I had a small breakfast and, after some chilling time, I got the family ready and we drove the lovely route. The beautiful sunshine with a soft breeze added the perfect vibe to a day we knew was going to be great.

When we entered the resort’s magnificent and imposing main hall, we could already hear the music and the happy vibes coming from downstairs. We took the stairs down and saw that the brunch spread from Saraya restaurant all the way to Fiamma and, with the awesome weather, it also took a big part of the outside space. If you have never been to Sofitel (you are most definitely missing out), it is a massive area. The tables and chairs filled up quite quickly. You can tell that this is one of the most beloved brunches on the island – it was busy!

It was time to explore our options. Well, after a first look, we knew that we wouldn’t be able to try all the dishes available and that we had to come up with a plan. The number of options is uncountable, really. They have a wide variety of cuisines and offer food to please all tastes.

I decided to start with something to warm me up and went for the potato and leek soup. The liquid was creamy and velvety with a pronounced potato flavour, it was simply divine. I can say it was a great start. I then moved to the salad selection and, if you are a fan of this type of cold dish, they have an excellent variety. I tried a small portion of some of them. The green apple, pomegranate, walnut and arugula had a hint of lemon and the perfect crunch. The other option that stood out was a seasoned watermelon with fresh basil leaves, it had the sweetness of the fruit, but the spices turned it into a refreshing savoury bite. And lastly, the simplest option out there, a tomato salad, composed of tomatoes (of course!), red and yellow cherry tomatoes, onions and fresh basil leaves with a touch of spring onion, it was the most comforting of them all. Fresh tomatoes do make me happy. Moving to the main dishes, we found a variety of options such as Masaman Curry, a slow-cooked Asian curry with chicken and Asian herbs, Nespresso Beef, a classic tender beef braised with sweet onion barbecue sauce, Camarones Ranchero, grilled shrimp, ranchero sauce and garlic, and Peruvian Roast Chicken with a Peruvian marinade, salsa verde and confit butternut squash just to show a small selection of the warm dishes. You can also pick your favourite meat or seafood and take it outside to be grilled to your taste. However, there was a spot that was the rest of the family’s favourite. Before entering Fiamma restaurant, they found a sushi haven and as lovers of all Japanese flavours, they tried all the sushi options available, and they were not disappointed as they went back many times.

DINING DELIGHT •

If the assortment of food wasn’t already enough, Chef Marco Terranova, Sofitel’s Executive Chef, comes up with different surprises every Friday. That day, he was frying fresh plantains and distributing them to the tables. They were crunchy and warm, such a delicious morsel. We also had a Bhel Puri (a popular Indian street food made with puffed rice, sweet and sour spicy chutneys, herbs, onions and tomatoes) trolley moving to each table to prepare fresh servings. They were spot on with the perfect punch and crunchiness that you expect. We also had another ‘food on wheels’ option offering fresh tuna carpaccio with a touch of caviar that melted in our mouths, just beautiful. And the last live presentation was the preparation of fresh guacamole by the one and only, Chef Marco. Everything was so fresh and well-balanced! The dessert corner has something for all sweet tooths out there. From macarons, crème brûlée and lemon tarts to chocolate delights and eclairs. However, our table favourite by full agreement was the tiramisu. It was also visually the cutest one, in the format of a coffee cup. It had the perfect coffee hint and light texture and best of all, the coffee cup was made of chocolate! Not only does the food embrace you, but also the vibrant ambience. Outside there was a kids’ corner in the lawn area that looked like a colourful picnic where my son had a blast in the bouncy castle and where he really enjoyed his first mini pony ride. We finished our wonderful day with a stroll by the beach and the undoubted thought that we must come back to try all the other delicious food that we had to skip.✤

FUN AT FURN

Melissa Nazareth spent a Sunday afternoon exploring the revamped menu at Furn Bistro & Bakery which features their Eat Well section and popular Middle Eastern staples with a twist.

The first day of the week is always difficult but having your workplace just two blocks from The Westin City Centre Bahrain has its benefits. My companions and I had lunch at Furn Bistro & Bakery, which is an all-day dining outlet with two menus – bakery and bistro.

The main area or bistro, where we sat, has a well-lit interior, influenced by clean lines and geometric shapes. There’s a private dining space too. You could also sit in the adjoining section or the outermost Rotunda.

The food arrived soon after we settled in. We started off with the best selection of appetisers I’ve ever eaten. Each dish had a distinct taste and some even had a surprising twist. Accompanying the good ol’ hummus was the Aromatic Saffron Labneh, which was tarte, creamy and fragrant from the saffron. Now, I’m not a fan of liver but I surprised myself as I went in for a second helping of the chicken liver. Laced with caramelised onions, it was perfectly seared on the edges, which offset the soft texture; it’s fried that way to stop the blood and juices from flowing out, thus locking in the flavour. It was doused in a fruity sauce of pomegranate molasses, which lent the dish a certain depth. The Falafel Pastirma deserves a special mention. In addition to boasting a super crunchy crust and perfectly grainy texture, this traditionally vegetarian snack featured chopped up pieces of pastirma or cured beef, which worked wonders for the flavour. What stood out for me was the Spicy Makanik, a spiced, ground lamb sausage cooked with sweet peppers in a tangy tomato-based gravy. Garnished with crispy fried strips of flat bread and toasted pine nuts, it was a delightful dish. We also tried items from the Eat Well Menu – a concept across

FOODIE CORNER •

Westin hotels worldwide. It features balanced meals, localised for each property. In Bahrain, you can choose from an eclectic mix of refreshing salads and mains that can be ordered as half or full portions, depending on how hungry you are. First, came the Mediterranean Quinoa Salad. Colourful cuboids of squash and beetroot, tossed with cherry tomato halves in a medley of greens such as rocket and mint. The quinoa had a bite to it as did the crispy fried garlic slices, which also conjured up a smokey aroma. The citrusy dressing was light, not overpowering the veggies. The Nicosia Salad was a simple symphony of creamy mozzarella pearls and cherry tomato halves, tossed in a pesto and balsamic dressing, rendered fragrant by basil leaves and buttery pine nuts. Having whetted our appetites, it was time for the main course. We tried Furn Signature dishes including lamb shank. Slow cooked and served with a freekeh ragout, it made quite the impression. Freekeh is a popular Middle Eastern cereal made from green durum wheat. The lamb was tender and juicy, and melted in our mouths. Further, it coated the freekeh with its robust juices and flavours. I will return for this dish.

A close contender was the Furn Sayadiyah; oven baked seabass in harra sauce served with sayadiyah rice. The fish was moist, flaky and fresh, offering an appetising contrast to its crispy skin. It was immensely flavourful by itself. However, the harra sauce, sweet, zingy and herby, offered dimension. As I ate the rice, which is served separately, I discovered it was mild and perfectly cooked. The fried onion straws on top were crunchy and smoky,

and complemented the warm spices.

We were also served the vine leaves, which come with stuffed baby marrow, eggplant and bell peppers, offering variety. The Pesto Flatbread was akin to a thin crust pizza with scrumptious toppings such as parmesan shavings and pungent arugula.

Our luncheon ended with Furn’s bestselling kunafa. Served with ice-cream, this dessert is a must-try. Instead of having it with coffee, ask for a side of coffee ice cream, which is how we had it – heavenly! Gooey cheese concealed under a crispy, crunchy crust combined with a contrast of temperatures – hot kunafa and cold ice cream – tantalised and teased our taste buds. The Sweet Manakish, a pastry topped with halva or sesame paste, qashta or clotted cream, honey and nuts was equally magical – if it weren’t for the kunafa, this would have been my top favourite. Manakish, we learned, is usually savoury, so this sweet spin is yet another of Furn’s creative twists. We were also served a portion of Tiramisu, which is an option for those who like coffee-based desserts. Offering a wide range of new dishes and re-thought old favourites, Furn Bistro & Bakery is a place you must visit soon.

I know I will be making a pitstop here on my next retail therapy session at City Centre Bahrain. ✤

LUXURY HAS A NEW ADDRESS

• STAYCATION
Lawson Misquitta experiences a mid-week retreat at the well-appointed Address Beach Resort Bahrain.

After a busy morning attending a press conference, I found myself back on the road on a late weekday afternoon. This work appointment had me quite excited as it involved a stay at the Address Beach Resort Bahrain.

Located around 10km from Bahrain International Airport, Address Beach Resort Bahrain is a spectacular seaside property comprising a 117-room hotel and 154-room luxury apartment complex along the beautiful coastline of Marassi Al Bahrain.

On arriving, I noticed the hotel’s lobby was spacious and elegantly designed with ample natural light coming through, further enhancing the contemporary and chic interior. The check-in process was handled efficiently and I was also provided with a refreshing welcome drink and a cool towel by the absolutely amazing concierge team that proved to be courteous, friendly and attentive throughout my stay.

I was booked at the hotel’s topmost floor in the Deluxe Sea View Suite. On entering the spacious 95sq/m room, coloured predominantly in shades of blue, cream and white and featuring tasteful furniture with silver and gold trimmings, it was apparent much attention had been paid to the details, achieving a well-considered minimalist finish. But my eyes were fixed on the private balcony that allowed for breath-taking views of the sea and Marassi Beach – I was truly impressed!

fact magazine 86 • STAYCATION

On the living room dining table was a platter of fruit, chocolates and an envelope with a personalised handwritten note wishing me an enjoyable stay, a touching gesture indeed. The living room also came with a 55-inch TV, one of the most elaborate tea, coffee and minibar selections, a Nespresso machine and much more. The suite further featured a master bedroom with an immensely comfortable king-size bed and an en-suite bathroom equipped with twin vanity counters, a bathtub and separate shower and toilet cubicles. Just as I thought it couldn’t get any better, I noticed the bedroom also included its own 55-inch TV and, most importantly, another amazing balcony with the same stunning view. Now this is true luxury !

As I settled in, I realised that sunset was soon approaching, so I decided to make my way to the hotel’s private beach. With the weather being pleasant this time of the year, walking along the beach was a truly relaxing experience. As the sun made its descent for the day, I sat on one of the loungers taking in the calm sunset. The beach area has more than 70 shaded sun loungers, 18 gazebos, a swing set and a counter with fresh towels, making it an ideal place for the entire family to unwind. On speaking to the staff later, I learned that the beach area could also be used for organising luxurious wedding ceremonies – wouldn’t that be something!

As it started getting a bit chilly, I decided to walk back to the

hotel and further explore the property. I spent some time admiring the massive 28-metre pool that also overlooks the beach. The pool area had numerous sun loungers and gazebos too and included an adjoining section that came equipped with a bar serving refreshments. In the main pool’s vicinity was the children’s splash pad area, and close to that was QIX Club, a kids’ club that provides many fun activities for children.

STAYCATION •

On entering the building, I spotted the gym and decided to have a look. It included several treadmills, a wellstacked weights section and three comprehensive cable machines, making it an ideal place for guests looking to get a quick workout. Beside the gym was the hotel’s highly acclaimed wellness section, called The Spa at Address. After spending some time enquiring about the spa and all the various treatments, I was shown around the six cuttingedge treatment rooms. The spa boasted some unique offerings such as Vibra Healing – an extensive touchless sound healing treatment using the vibrational effects of Tibetan singing bowls – and the Emaar Signature Sleep Ritual – a treatment designed to guide guests into a state of ultimate relaxation and help them get better sleep, among many others.

Walking around the property, I had built up quite an appetite and made my way to the hotel’s premier dining destination – The Restaurant. The place had a remarkable ambiance and decor. The menu was inspired by global cuisines and featured organic ingredients. As I took my seat and explored the menu, it wasn’t long before I was paid a visit by Chef Chetan. We had a good chat and he recommended some dishes. I kicked off the meal with the Canadian Lobster Kobe Salad. The lobster was perfectly cooked, its meat sweet and supple, and each bite was topped with a thin slice of truffle along with a select few greens and a special Japanese dressing, which gave a rich and satisfying flavour. The next appetiser was the Salmon

• STAYCATION

Ceviche that was dressed in a preparation of mango, avocado, chilli and lime. The dish was light, refreshing and bursting with citrusy flavours and was accompanied with thin, crisp salty nachos, which gave every combined bite this wonderfully opposing taste profile and texture. I went with Chef Chetan’s recommendation for the main course and was glad I did. The Black Seabass was cooked to perfection and had a mild but delicate flavour profile and a tender yet firm texture. It was served on a bed of Oriental pasta that was flavoured in a tomato and olive oil base and was accompanied with a velvety green pea mash and a black lemon sauce that was deep and flavourful. I wiped the plate clean for this one! All good things must come to an end and I finished with a plate of Saffron Baba for dessert. The dish came with a circular soft brioche served along with a delectable preparation of saffron custard and a careful amount of whipped cream and vanilla ice cream that only enhanced the dish as a whole – absolutely delicious!

After this feast, I retired for the night and made my way back to my suite where after watching some TV, the comfortable bed and pillows soon had me in a deep relaxing sleep. As I woke up the following morning, I had the option to visit the hotel’s wonderful breakfast buffet that they serve daily. Instead, I opted for room service and ordered in a hearty American breakfast that included all the works, along with a fresh juice and coffee. I wanted to spend the final few hours of my stay making the most

of the amazing balcony view as I enjoyed the calm sunny morning and savoured my breakfast there.

Before checking out I took a final walk around the property taking in all the sights one more time. The hotel truly has something for the entire family making it the ideal new staycation and holiday destination in the Kingdom, and I, for one, look forward to returning in the near future along with my loved ones. ✤

MALDIVIAN MAGIC

We visited Nova Maldives for a touch of winter warmth in a truly beautiful setting.

• TRAVEL
TRAVEL •

There are few locations on the planet that measure up to the breath-taking beauty of the Maldives. This ancient island nation is renowned for its sapphire blue waters, powdery, white beaches, green tropical forests and golden sunshine.

This month, thanks to Nova Maldives, FACT spent four magical days and nights in this extraordinary part of the world.

NOVA MALDIVES

Positioned Southwest of Sri Lanka and India, about 750 kilometres from mainland Asia, the Maldives is an archipelagic country, formed by 26 natural atolls, consisting of 1,192 islands. Nova is located on South Ari Atoll, a mere 25-minute seaplane ride from Malé International Airport. This scenic flight, although very comfortable, was too short to take in the full splendour of the surrounding views. By the time we touched down on the clear waters alongside the wooden jetty, we were relaxed and ready for our refreshing island adventure.

AWE-INSPIRING ACCOMMODATION

To ensure the most comfortable and relaxing of experiences, Nova offers an assortment of accommodation types to suit all tastes. From cosy Beach Villas to a two-bedroom Beach Residence complete with private pool, the island resort has something for every requirement.

fact magazine 92
• TRAVEL

We were happy to be housed in Beach Villas complete with Jacuzzies. These uber comfy and stylish locations provided home bases for us to kick back and unwind whenever we desired. Overlooking the open ocean, it was a pleasure to simply sit and absorb the view from our private decks or from the temperature controlled Jacuzzies. Complete with king-sized beds, plush bedding, in-room high speed internet, flatscreen HD televisions, along with Apple TV, we wanted for nothing over the four days in our lavish accommodations.

MAJESTIC MEALS

During our time on the island, we were thoroughly spoilt by our hosts, not least through the abundance of delicious dishes we were served throughout our stay.

SOUL KITCHEN

Soul Kitchen’s wide-ranging, mouth-watering menu is rivalled only by the incredible views on offer and we thoroughly enjoyed every minute we spent in this friendly and relaxing environment. Open from morning to night, this superb eatery offers generous buffets for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

FLAMES

Flames is another ‘must mention’ restaurant. This fine-dining location offers some of the freshest and most succulent ingredients you could hope to find on your plate. Featuring everything from local fish, seafood and meat to delectable vegetarian-based options, the talented chefs ensure every dish is grilled or prepared to absolute perfection.

MIZU

Mizu is a picturesque overwater teppanyaki restaurant that offers a first-class menu of ocean delights. Pair this exceptional food with enchanting Indian Ocean views and you have an almost unrivalled dining location. Fortunate enough to experience the culinary magnificence this venue offers, we were taken by the delightful tropical flavours, created from fresh local ingredients and served by the most attentive and hospitable of staff members.

WINK

A little later in the evenings, the nights truly came alive. The vibrant Wink provided all guests the opportunity to meet their fellow visitors, to hold lively conversations while enjoying cold beverages or a late meal. At this venue, we experienced some of the very finest hookah we have ever sampled, as well as some foot-stomping local rhythms. As music lovers, we were truly impressed by the talent and energy exhibited by The Kabans. This local cabana band rocked the crowd with their lively music and spirited performances, often causing us to get to bed far later than originally intended.

AMAZING ADVENTURES

Thanks to its numerous natural atolls, the Maldives is one of the world’s primary destinations for ocean life experiences. The diverse local flora and fauna includes sea turtles, dolphins, whale sharks, manta rays and beautiful coral reefs that are home to thousands of species of fish. During our unforgettable stay, we were lucky enough to experience various ocean adventures in one of the most breath-taking aquatic environments.

SUNSET TRIPS

There’re moments in your life when you must stop and appreciate the adventure of it all. This was certainly the case as we headed off on our Indian Ocean sunset trip. Along with the already spectacular nature of our surroundings, we were privileged to spot dolphins playing in the water less than 50 metres from our boat. Witnessing a flawlessly beautiful sunset whilst appreciating these magnificent creatures in their natural environment is a moment we won’t soon forget.

Nova is a natural island and the sea’s gentle giants such as whale sharks and manta rays reside in the surrounding waters all year round.

We had a further ocean-bound adventure in the form of a sunset fishing excursion. Golden trevally, red bass, coral trout, rainbow runners and reef fish along with a variety of tuna, are all sought after prizes in these waters. Whether you want to be actively involved in the fishing process or simply relax and enjoy the views from the water, the choice is yours.

AQUAHOLICS

Aquaholics is the name of Nova’s watersport centre. If you’re looking for excitement, relaxation, outstanding ocean views or the opportunity to immerse yourself in the local marine life, this is the place for you. Aquaholics offers snorkelling options along with an extensive range of scuba diving experiences. An array of beginner and advanced courses as well as private diving experiences, of various lengths and makeups, are available. A broad range of equipment is also on offer to rent. We got to experience two hours of snorkelling in the almost unbelievable underwater world around Nova. The vibrant colours combined with the warm waters and abundance of sea life, including whale sharks and manta rays, made the entire experience seem somewhat surreal and it was tough to leave this submerged Shangri-la at the end of the adventure.

PRIVATE PAMPERING

One of our favourite moments at Nova was the Eskape Spa experience. On offer at this idyllic venue is an assortment of massages and treatments, specially designed to relax and rejuvenate the body and the senses. The Maldivian Ocean Dream Massage is the signature massage and it’s easy to understand why. As we indulged in this stress-stripping activity, on a tropical island, with the promise of more

luxury and adventure to come, we couldn’t help but wonder if travelling experiences could get any better than this.

HEADING HOME

As difficult as it was to leave Nova Maldives at the end of our stay, we took with us a wealth of unforgettable memories that we’ll always treasure. We would like to thank all Nova staff members for both their kindness and attentiveness. They were the heart and soul of this one-ofa-kind adventure. ✤

Part of the team that’s hunting Sully and his family are ‘recombinants’ (Na'vi avatars that have been implanted with the minds and memories of deceased human soldiers), and among them is Colonel Quaritch’s recombinant serving as their leader and determined to get revenge. Sully and his family flee to Pandora’s vast network of islands, taking refuge among the oceanic Metkayina clan and attempting to adopt to their new tribe’s customs. He invites five friends to come join him but also participate in a special activity that’s part of the weekend’s entertainment – a make-believe murder mystery of which Miles himself is the victim, and it rests upon his guests to figure out and solve this supposed 'crime'.

FULLY BOOKED

ALTERNATIVE, INDIE Premonition

Released by Domino Recording Company, Premonition is the fifth and final album by the band, who are going their separate ways. It explores the powerful themes of birth and rebirth, and growth.

Hysteric opens with a bang! It’s a fastpaced song, catchy, even for those who aren’t punk or rock listeners. Date Night follows, sustaining the tempo. Kenneth’s guitar work on this one is impressive, keeping you hooked. Combine that with attention-grabbing lyrics: “І'm оn а dаtе wіth Gоd Аnd hе'ѕ drunk.”

About midway, Under Glass , a powerful yet soothing song, offers a break from the fast beats. The lyrics on this one: “I can’t think under the glass Lost what I know”, “Summer comes I’ll survive Honey, it’ll be fine.” and “Still I walk around Visions in my eyes To you I’m bound.”; the underlying message seems to highlight that something positive like growth is accompanied by loss – we lose a part of ourselves in the process and perhaps, that’s what change and evolution are all about.

The tempo increases again, with songs showcasing the theme of motherhood. Not surprising, considering frontwoman Mish Barber-Way realised she was pregnant while she was preparing to record back in 2017; the album’s release comes after a five-year hiatus or ‘transformative period’, evident from the underlying intense emotion. Exhibits metallic riffs and an energy that’s raw and feral.

ALTERNATIVE, INDIE

Conditions of a Punk

Released via RCA records, Conditions of a Punk is an album about love and its many nuances. Right from the title track and opener C onditions of a Punk , you know this is a musical creation that will eventually grown on you. The infectious “Da-da-da-da-da” in this first song pulls you in. The lyrics are light-hearted but strike a chord with the listener. You feel like your heart’s floating – “Hold You in my hands like hot tea Knowing I'm safe 'cause You want me” on Hot Tea ; “Summerland holds what I want right now It's like the hoodie you find and you wear forever,” on Summerland and “When you think you really know someone And you're blinded by the summer sun Fall in love with who they won't become Was it ever real? Did I make you up?” on Did I Make You Up are some cases in point. Complementing the words is the easy going, melodious and peppy music, peppered throughout with irresistible electronic touches. While neither overpowers the other, the music stands out from time to time. Such is the sound of this album, unique and arresting. Each song offers something new, leaving you wanting more. Half Alive create a charming playlist to sing and dance along to.

Beauty’s In The Eye Winners Quit Message In A Bottle

They say beauty is skin deep. And rightly so. One look at the seven finalists of this year’s UK’s Ugliest Dog competition is proof; scanty fur, dangly tongues, bulging eyes, buck teeth… and strangely still adorable. The competition hopes to show that every dog is beautiful no matter how it looks. Competitions such as this one eliminate the stigma attached to owning a pet that’s not perfect.
