QATAR SET FOR INAUGURAL BOAT SHOW

Doha is gearing up to spotlight the luxury yachting lifestyle with the Qatar Boat Show, which will take place from November 6 to 9.

MARKING A SIGNIFICANT MILESTONE

High perfumery house, Amouage is celebrating its 40th anniversary with the release of two new Exceptional Extraits: Dia 40 Woman and Jubilation 40 Man.

Recognising the importance of the occasion, it was clear a truly remarkable addition to the brand’s assortment of scents would be needed, which would also pay homage to Amouage’s rich heritage. Renaud Salmon, Chief Creative Officer, recognised an ideal opportunity to extend the acclaimed collection of Exceptional Extraits which are dosed at an extremely high percentage. Two perfumes were especially suited to the project. Composed in 2002 by Jean-Claude Ellena, Dia Woman has always been one of the most tenderly feminine floral bouquets. And Jubilation XXV Man was released as a marker of another important chapter in the brand’s story – its 25th anniversary in 2008.

The task of creating this more intoxicating version of Dia Woman fell to Alexandra Carlin. A perfumer renowned for her technical skills, she maintained the distinctive elegance of the 2002 composition while making its base even more profound and sumptuous.

At the scent’s opening, the familiar aldehydes lend delicacy to a veil of daylight-blush musks. Next comes the grand floral quartet of rose, orange blossom, carnation and ylang-ylang: vivid ingredients that combine their textures to create a regal vision of femininity. In the closing stages,

orris, sandalwood and amyris glow with a luminous aura. Effervescent and light-hearted, yet exuding refinement, Dia 40 Woman sings of eternal beauty.

For this even more celebratory incarnation of Jubilation XXV Man, Amouage turned to its original creator, Bertrand Duchaufour.

Retaining the instantly recognisable blackberry opening, the scent now reveals dry, tart hints of blackcurrant. This makes way for the perfume’s majestic heart: genet unfurls within a burst of honeyed tobacco notes while regal frankincense cuts through the narcotic warmth of balsams and resins. Eventually, the scent settles on a heart-stopping dry-down of patchouli, cistus and opoponax. Flaming with magnificence and a lust for adventure, Jubilation 40 man captures the essence of masculine sophistication.

Found on the lower deck, the VIP guestroom and three twin guest cabins are connected by a lobby area with a dedicated laundry. All staterooms have private en suite and shower facilities.

Hadag got behind the wheel of the new Audi S3 Sportback, a beautifully designed, tech-laden model, that is sure to take the premium compact car segment by storm.

Many years of test-driving upmarket motor vehicles have led us to develop serious feelings for the Audi brand. After all, what’s not to love about this German-based, high-end car manufacturer? They consistently produce some of the finest vehicles to grace our roads – models always at the cutting edge of performance, safety and style.

Having already experienced the Audi A5 Coupé, the Audi RS7 and the Audi e-tron Sportback 55 Quattro in recent years, we were most excited when invited to try out the new Audi S3 Sportback, the brand’s latest competitor in the premium compact market segment.

DYNAMIC EXTERIOR

At first glance, we were captivated by the S3 Sportback’s spirited appearance. With its athletic shape and Python Yellow Metallic paintwork, we felt the car would look as comfortable in the Fast and Furious franchise as it would out on the roads.

Grabbing our collective attention from the getgo was the broad, low-positioned single frame with its large rhombus-patterned grille in matte black, gracefully housing the gloss black Audi logo at its centre. Imposing air inlets flanking the grille hint at the on-road intentions of this aerodynamic machine, while the sleek headlights are perfectly shaped, adding to the sporty prowess of the model.

Shifting our attention to the sides, we noted that the shoulder of the body extends in a pronounced line from head to tail, with the areas below curved inward to place a stronger emphasis on the wheel arches. Housed beneath are 18-inch wheels with an attractive five-twinspoke V design. We loved how the C-pillars of the Sportback appear to give the entire vehicle a forward thrust, further adding to the powerful presence of the S3.

At the back end, the heavily contoured diffuser was instantly noticeable, with the four distinctive exhaust tailpipes emphasising the car’s dynamic presence. Our favourite rear component, however, had to be the long roof edge spoiler that accentuates the muscular shape and width of the vehicle.

No matter where we looked, precise horizontal lines and cleanly designed surfaces dominated the internal layout.

PROGRESSIVE INTERIOR

Slipping into the multi-adjustable front seats of the S3, we appreciated how the bold design and striking three-dimensional details of the exterior continued inside.

No matter where we looked, precise horizontal lines and cleanly designed surfaces dominated the internal layout. The expertly crafted instrument panel sits perfectly in position, underscored by a horizontal décor surface that runs the entire width, only interrupted by the steering wheel column.

Designed in sporty anthracite tones, we could only identify top-quality materials throughout the interior. Aluminium and carbon are used as decorative inlays, while the door armrests and instrument panels feature contrasting stitching. We loved the illuminated door sill trims and the coloured edging around the floor mats. Additional design details included the S embossing in the front seat backrests, black headlining and stainless-steel pedals, along with the contrasting stitching and S emblem of the flat-bottomed sports steering wheel.

Despite the sleek and aerodynamic shape of the exterior, the interior of the Sportback S3 is surprisingly spacious. In the cockpit, we enjoyed oodles of leg, arm and headroom and in the back, we found the seating to provide sufficient comfort space, even for longer journeys. The luggage compartment provides 325 litres of storage space – a capacity increased to 1,145 litres with the rear seats folded flat. The loading floor can be inserted at different heights, with the tailgate opening and closing with a simple foot motion. These characteristics ensure the sporty S3 is not just a pretty face but practical for everyday use.

TOP-NOTCH TECH

Although we cannot sing the praises of the new Sportback S3’s exterior and interior designs loudly enough, it is the outstanding tech the brand has included that deserves the most attention. The first thing we noticed about the displays and controls of the new Sportback is that Audi have dispensed with the analogue instruments and rotary pushbutton of its predecessor.

The new main unit is the third generation of the modular infotainment platform (MIB 3). We were impressed with the speed and user-friendly nature of this setup. Providing 10 times more

computing power than the MIB 2, it also works with the Online Connectivity Unit (OCU), fitted with an integrated SIM card and a wi-fi module. The OCU performs all connectivity-related tasks, including fast data transfer.

We accessed the infotainment system through the central 10.1-inch touch display, featuring acoustic feedback as standard. This also applies to the digital instrument cluster, with its 10.25-inch diagonal display operated via the multifunction steering wheel. Furthermore, with MMI Navigation Plus installed, the displays appear in the Audi virtual cockpit, a feature boasting many of its own additional functions. Upon customer request, the S3 can also be equipped with a state-of-the-art head-up display. Other must-mention tech features include the Audi smartphone interface that can establish contact with the customers’ iOS and Android smartphones, transferring their Apple CarPlay or Android Auto environment to the MMI display. Safety-wise, it’s no surprise Audi have equipped their new Sportback with a full suite of driver assistance and safety features. These include, but are not limited to, adaptive cruise assist, collision avoidance assist, efficiency assist, emergency assist, turn assist, park assist, lane change warning, exit warning and cross-traffic assist rear. Additionally, the car itself features a modern, crash-resistant body design.

POWER, PERFORMANCE & SAFETY

As good-looking as the S3 is, it’s a purely performance-orientated machine on the tarmac. Engaging the ignition, we were all smiles at the roars of the 2.0 TFSI inline fourcylinder engine. Capable of producing 226kW of power and 400Nm of torque, this two-litre racer can accelerate from 0-100km/h in around 4.9 seconds and delivers an electronically capped top speed of 250km/h. When seated behind the steering wheel, this compact car seemed even faster.

The seven-speed S tronic transmission means lightning-fast gear shifts that add greatly to the responsive nature of the vehicle. With the Audi drive select dynamic handling system equipped as standard, combined with an ultra-efficient braking system, we found the new Sportback to exhibit excellent handling. This meant we always felt in complete control, even when cornering trickier bends at decent speeds. Add a sporty yet taut suspension system to the equation, along with five driving modes and you have a customisable vehicle suited to both on-track and everyday driving conditions. We must mention that thanks to careful soundproofing and sophisticated aeroacoustics, it was always peaceful inside the car as we watched the kilometres roll silently by.

In 2011, Michel Parmigiani created the Hijri Calendar Table Clock after he was inspired by the restoration of a pocket watch that featured an Arabic calendar. This remarkable achievement was made further impressive when it was miniaturised in wristwatch form as the Hijri Perpetual Calendar which won the 2020 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) Innovation Prize. In 2023, Parmigiani Fleurier released the Tonda PF Hijri Perpetual Calendar in a platinum case with a fresh design language and simpler dial.

The Tonda PF Hijri Perpetual Calendar is a horological expression of the Tabular Islamic calendar which was developed by Muslim scholars and astronomers in the eighth century. This system makes it possible for historians to convert Islamic dates to Gregorian and makes the Hijri Perpetual Calendar possible. The first year of the Hijri calendar corresponds to the year 622 CE and is marked by the Prophet Muhammad’s Hijrah from Makkah to Medina in modern-day Saudi Arabia.

The Islamic year’s sacred months, including Ramadan, are each marked on the dial which, for the first time, comes in viridian green – a colour that has special importance to Muslims.

The new Tonda PF Hijri Perpetual Calendar has a 100m water-resistant, stainless-steel case with alternating satin and polished finishes. Its signature fluted bezel is in 950 platinum and it is paired with a matching stainless-steel bracelet with folding clasp. The viridian green dial is hand finished with a Grain d’Orge guilloche.

The applied hour markers and skeletonised delta hour and minute hands are crafted in 18-carat gold with rhodium plating. The second hand and calendar subdial hands are made of rhodium-plated steel.

The watch is equipped with the Caliber PF009 automatic movement, which operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and has a power reserve of 48 hours. The intricate movement has bevelled bridges and the skeletonised rotor is chiselled from platinum with a polished and sandblasted finish.

The Tonda PF Hijri Perpetual Calendar displays all the information on the dial. The 12-hour subdial shows the 30-year cycle of the Islamic calendar with the abundant 355-day years in beige and the standard 354-day years in white. The three o’clock subdial indicates the numbered months of the year with the ninth month of Ramadan highlighted in bright red.

The nine o’clock subdial shows the days of the

month with an aperture indicating whether it is a 30-day abundant month or a 29-day common month. Finally, the six o’clock subdial features the blue aventurine moon phase display, which shows the position of the moon in the northern and southern hemispheres.

To complement the case and bracelet, Audemars Piguet developed a matching sandgold-toned hue to adorn the openworked bridges and mainplate of Calibre 2972, whose multilayered architecture takes centre stage on both sides of the watch. The new colour sits in subtle contrast with the rhodiumtoned components of the movement’s inner workings to create a unique 3D effect. The result is a harmonious scene blending technical complexity with contemporary design.

A NEW SHADE OF GOLD

The new 41mm Royal Oak Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Openworked premieres the use of sand gold. This 18-carat gold alloy, named after sand dunes in the sunlight, combines gold with copper and palladium for a warm rendering. It offers subtle colour variations depending on the light. In addition, it provides resistance to discolouration over time, making it both a durable and timeless material.

The sand gold case and bracelet are finished with the maker’s trademark alternation of satin brushing and polished chamfers. The large mirror-polished bevels of the octagonal bezel and the chamfers adorning every link and stud of the tapering bracelet accentuate the play of light conferred by this precious material.

Audemars Piguet has developed a sand-gold-toned hue, obtained through galvanic treatment, to adorn the inner bezel as well as the openworked bridges and mainplate of Calibre 2972, visible on both sides of the watch. The bridges and mainplate are contrasted with touches of grey. The rhodium-toned barrel, geartrain and flying tourbillon at six o’clock are complemented by white gold hour-markers and hands, all filled with luminescent material. To give pride of place to the movement’s openworked architecture, the Audemars Piguet signature has been printed in black on the glareproofed sapphire crystal at 12 o’clock.

On the caseback side, the rhodium-toned, 22-carat pink gold oscillating weight furthers the two-tone aesthetic of the openworked movement.

First released in 2022 for the Royal Oak’s 50th anniversary, Calibre 2972 combines a selfwinding mechanism with a flying tourbillon. Its highly stylised and multilayered openworked architecture has been conceived to offer symmetry while bestowing the watch with a unique 3D effect.

This movement builds on the age-old openworking techniques that have been reshaping what is possible with wristwatch design since the 1930s. The beauty and finesse of the mechanism are revealed by removing as much material from the mainplate and bridges as possible to let light pass through, without impairing its functions.

The new Royal Oak Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Openworked in sand gold builds on this longstanding legacy of gold watches while continuing Audemars Piguet’s material exploration and diversification. Coming alive in the light thanks to the alloy’s ever-changing colour, it offers new aesthetic possibilities merging contemporary design with endless elegance.

The Spring-Summer 2024 collection from Versace takes its starting point from youth, personal confidence and the energy of city living. ART BECOMES LIFE

London-based label QASIMI is wearing its Middle Eastern heritage proudly in its latest collection which draws inspiration from the work of Sudanese artist Kamala Ibrahim Ishaq.

The brand uses her prints in conversation with their own silhouettes for a stunning selection of eye-catching pieces. 1984’s Women in Crystal Cubes acts as the starting point for the collection, the centre of everything, alongside later works like My Plant, Blues for the Martyrs and Composition.

DOWNTIME FOR THE BODY AND SOUL

A holistic journey is Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som’s approach to wellness. Thomene Dilley went there to check it out.

estled at the northernmost tip of Qatar is the exclusive Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som. Surrounded by the Arabian Gulf, this exquisite property is secluded to guarantee privacy, yet conveniently accessible with a mere 60-minute drive from the centre of Doha. It is a sanctuary dedicated to you, to bring wellness and tranquillity while reviving all your senses – mind, body and soul. It invites you to simply switch off technology and turn nature back on.

Driving through the gates, you are immediately immersed in complete bliss as the birds sing, welcoming you to Qatar’s only resort with a completely holistic approach. Guest Experience Manager Fanor took us through to an intimate welcome area. ‘Marhaba’ echoed as we walked, heading downstairs to one of the two libraries. In the House of Inspiration, I was immediately transported to a magical world. This enchanting space was every bibliophile’s dream, with books ranging from great philosophers to cars, Versace and How Not to Die. While I lost myself in this opulent room of knowledge, they checked us in seamlessly. Walking outside, every sense was brought to life with the sound of water, the smell of honeysuckle and an abundance of tree species with the crystalline serenity of the lagoon calmly running through the middle of the property. Spanning over 280,000sq/m of lush greenery with a massive bird population, the resort functions across two areas, Zulal Discovery and Zulal Serenity. We stayed in Zulal Discovery, which is dedicated to families and welcomes guests of all ages. There are 120 rooms and suites, all with health and wellness in mind. They have a ‘no devices out of your room’ policy, which helps with a deeper connection to nature. There is a magnificent swimming area with a heated chlorinated pool and a cooler saltwater pool that forms part of the lagoon. Lifeguards are visible until 8pm and there is ample space on the plush recliners with fresh towels and water on hand.

The rooms have been inspired by the ocean with a great emphasis on Qatar’s rich heritage. Beautiful neutral colours amplify Zulal’s sustainability ethos with exquisite natural textures, lines and ecofriendly fabrics. Our Discovery Junior Suite was peaceful and elegantly furnished encompassing 59sq/m that includes a reclining area, an en-suite bathroom, a dressing area and a private balcony. The bathroom had a generous tub, perfect for taller guests. We loved the refillable pump-action bottles in the shower for shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. The shaving kit offered a reusable biodegradable razor alongside a wooden comb, manicure set, hand soap, refillable hand cream and a hairdryer. The rain shower was simply glorious, with a convenient seated area inside the cubicle. The king-sized bed proved nothing short of luxurious. It felt like sleeping on a soft cloud while the duvet enfolded me like the gentle embrace of Mother Nature herself. A range of pillows on a pillow menu ensures every guest’s

comfort and all the high-quality linen is ecofriendly and biodegradable.

I must say, the in-room wellness minibar was by far the highlight. They stocked the fridge with a selection of juice and two trays of juicy plump berries, energising date balls and dried fruits. It was the perfect nibble between meals and left us feeling invigorated and satiated. A really nice touch was a delectable selection of fresh tea leaves and flowers, ready to brew in teabags big enough to sit cosily in a teapot and plenty enough for two. We decided to explore and found ourselves at the exquisite restaurant Aizoon. Seated right next to the lagoon, Rony, the Restaurant Manager, came over and made us feel like royalty. While we enjoyed the sea breeze, we sipped on refreshing mocktails; a personal favourite, the Kiwi Cucumber Crush with added lemon, basil and honey. It hit all the right notes, a beautiful culmination of sweet, sour and slightly spicy. We loved the lunchtime buffet with a succulent carvery of meats for my son and a crisp and fresh salad selection for my taste buds. The choice of homemade vegan ice creams was the creamiest and tastiest I have had in Qatar. Incidentally, the resort only uses honey, including white royal honey from Kazakhstan, and coconut sugar in desserts and mocktails. Zulal is completely dairy-free with a strong emphasis on plant-based cuisine, which suited me perfectly. But, they also have the best Wagyu beef, according to my son, and serve only organic chicken and vegetables and fresh seafood at the restaurants.

At Acacia Restaurant, there is an Urban Cultivator where they grow micro greens and herbs under controlled temperature and humidity conditions. During my solo dining experience there, I was treated like gold by Ali, the Restaurant Manager, and Jerry, the restaurant supervisor for Acacia and Malbu. The star of the show was the hot grape leaf stuffed with a flavoursome lentil filling with tones of citrus, along with my favourite, muhammara and micro greens.

The next evening, Ali enticed us to the Mediterranean-style beach club Malbu, where children are allowed. The aroma of grilled seafood on the open fire and the ocean air fills your soul with a deep sense of contentment. I also tried Alsidr restaurant, on the Zulal Serenity side of the resort, where my taste buds were treated to their Pan-Asian cuisine. Eating the Detox Curry was the moment my soul left my body. I wanted to swim in it. A coconut base infused with lime leaf, sweet basil, red chili and galangal. The kitchen maestros graciously give out any of their recipes and they also have a cooking studio where you can learn to make various cuisines and attend workshops. For a more casual dining experience, the lagoon-side café Casuarina offers daytime light meals and snacks.

Zulal, the Arabic word meaning pure natural water, focuses on the Traditional Arabic and Islamic Medicine (TAIM) system of well-being. It is a diagnostic approach to guide guests’ selection of programmes, discussing the appropriate therapy to sustain health and well-being. I met with Orranat, my consultant, at the Discovery Oasis reception to find out which packages were suitable for myself and my son. Orranat was gentle and intuitive as she guided me through a questionnaire about my health and background. We settled on the Stress Reset and Burnout Recovery Retreat, which included my diet, daily treatments, activities and tools to take home to continue my holistic

approach. My son joined the kids’ club suited to his age, the Falcon Studio for eight to 12-year-olds. His activities included exploring the environment (identifying birds, insects and plant species), sketching and rock painting. They have clubs for all ages and a range of options to stimulate physical activity, creativity, family connection and to develop positive, lasting habits.

My treatments included a signature full-body Tadleek, which was a deeply relaxing massage enhancing blood and lymphatic flow, an Oriental scalp massage, to release tension from the head, neck and shoulders, the incredible Al-Qadam, a rhythmic foot massage that soothes tired feet and enhances relaxation, and Al-Batin, an abdominal massage that goes deep to alleviate the tension we carry that causes digestive issues. They were all done by different professionals.

The therapists used sweet almond or coconut oil on my skin and the therapy rooms were beautifully serene and calm while soothing all the senses through gentle music, touch and the essence of essential oils. After my deeply relaxing scalp massage, therapist Kedar entered the room and performed an incredible Reiki session on me using crystals, singing bowls and energy healing. By the time I left the therapy room, I was floating. I could not have been more relaxed. My final session was Pranayama Breathing, guided by Aarti. She took me through various very effective deep breathing exercises in the exquisite yoga studio and showed me some stretches to maintain flexibility and release tension.

I also had the opportunity to use the extensive gym facilities. The fitness trainers were extremely helpful and friendly and the equipment was topof-the-range.

OUTRIGHT AMBIENCE IN THE HEART OF AMSTERDAM

It’s not every day one gets to stay in a deluxe hotel with a 155-year history in the heart of one of the most soughtafter tourist destinations on the planet. As recently as 2022, this iconic landmark was completely modernised thanks to a five-star makeover that has since attracted such high-end clientele as French President Emmanuel Macron. For us, the experience was nothing less than sublime.

Hotel Heritage

As far back as 1856, a tailor named Adolph Wilhelm Krasnapolsky opened a simple coffee shop on the site that now features the Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky. As the popularity and reputation of the café grew, he expanded the location to include several rooms that could be rented by travellers. The development of this site continued over the decades, with more neighbouring buildings being purchased and added to the hotel. Today, this recently renovated property comprises 55 connected canal houses spanning from Dam Square to the Oudezijds Voorburgwal canal. A truly unique setup by any standards.

Meet & Greet

As you would expect from a five-star venue, we were welcomed by the friendly and attentive staff members who ensured the effortless booking-in process was completed in a matter of minutes. The manner in which the entire staff conducted themselves ensured we felt relaxed and at home before even reaching our suites.

Deluxe Accommodation

The first-class accommodations in the Anantara consist of 402 rooms and suites, all of which are elegantly and ergonomically designed. With a range of layouts on offer, the venue ensures suitable and comfortable lodgings for singles, couples, families and friends alike.

We were privileged to be given the grand tour of the hotel, a large part of which involved the various room and suite types. The further up we ventured, the more spectacular the canal and city views became.

We found these recently refurbished rooms and suites to provide a contemporary feel combined with elements of Dutch heritage and Anantara’s classy signature touches. We appreciated the warm tones and soft, tactile fabrics, with the mid-century-inspired furniture and striking geometric lighting helping to create both ambience and an overall soothing environment. Large-scale photographs of the city, hanging from the walls, helped to immerse us in the Amsterdam experience, introducing guests to an assortment of famous landmarks and views. From the 70sq/m Presidential Suite to our standard suites, every room offered plenty of space and everything one would need throughout their stay.

The White Room is the oldest and most elegant restaurant in all of Amsterdam, conducted by former three Michelin-starred chef Jacob Jan Boerma. This renowned venue takes advantage of the freshest local ingredients, with the delicious dishes being paired with fine grapes. The setting itself is a banquet hall of white and gold that dates to back 1885.

For all-day dining, The Grand Café Krasnapolsky overlooking Dam Square cooks up modern European and locally inspired dishes for both lunch and dinner. Additionally, afternoon tea is served with freshly baked macaroons from The Cake Room, along with a selection of 10 different sparkling beverages by the glass. We still dream about those little cookies.

The award-wining bar, The Tailor is named in tribute to the hotel’s founder, serving liquid works of art and a warm inviting environment that includes the most comfortable of large armchairs.

For all those after a scrumptious breakfast, the plant-filled, Belle Epoque-styled Wintergarden provides the most delightful breakfast buffet in the city. We agreed the venue’s grand style and magnificent 19th-century glass roof ensure a naturally lit and particularly novel dining experience.

Hotel Amenities

Part of our guided tour was of the hotel amenities including the in-house gym and spa. The Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky, Amsterdam ensures fitness-focused guests have the perfect environment in which to keep their bodies in peak condition. The hotel’s fully equipped gym features Technogym machines, plenty of free weights, and even a rotating climbing wall for the more adventurous.

For those (including ourselves) looking for pampering, Anantara’s award-winning spa combines the best of Eastern and Western healing traditions with contemporary, resultdriven treatments. Thai massages are among the favourites requested by guests, along with skin-type-tailored facials. The inclusion of an authentic hammam, along with a sauna and a steam room, are perfect outlets to dissolve tensions and stress.

Yet another visitor favourite is private yoga classes held in the venue’s charming outdoor space, the peaceful Summer Garden, tucked away within the hotel.

Ideal Location

Along with the idyllic nature of the hotel’s inner sanctuary, we found the venue itself to be superbly located in the centre of Amsterdam. The hotel has created a programme of local experiences that enables guests to fully immerse themselves in all that this culturerich city has to offer.

Amongst the vast array of experiences for visitors are cruises along the city’s canals and cycling along the waterways – lined with traditional gabled canal houses. We explored several world-class museums, enjoyed culinary venues of all persuasions, visited some of the country’s oldest distilleries, completed memorable walks amongst endless tulip plantations, and shopped until we dropped at numerous high-end boutiques. These are but a few of the almost unending options available to all.

EXPERIENCE THE EMERALD ISLE

“The world is full of magical things, we wait patiently for our senses to become more acute.” So wrote the poet W.B. Yeats. He surely could have been describing his Irish homeland, for seldom will a destination prove more magical than this.

Mayo Dark Sky Park

Ireland, the island of the green, often known as the Emerald Isle, possesses a unique charm. From its magnificent scenery to its rich heritage and from its ever-friendly people to an abundance of outdoor activities and festivals, this small country is a big hitter on the tourism stage. And, being just 486km from north to south and 275km from east to west, it is easily driveable allowing visitors to pack in a lot in a short time.

Historical Ireland

For a land so small, Ireland is abundant in historical sites – both truly ancient, such as Newgrange, and more modern, including a plethora of stunning castles, many of which can still be visited today.

Dating back 5,000 years, Newgrange is older than Stonehenge, Mycenae or even the Pyramids of Egypt. Classified by archaeologists as a passage tomb or, more recently, as an ancient temple, it is a large, kidney-shaped mound covering more than an acre. Surrounded by 97 kerbstones, which bear rich decorations of megalithic art, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s most famous for the alignment of its stones with the sunrise on the Winter Solstice. No visit to Ireland would be complete without a trip to Blarney Castle in County Cork. Or, more specifically, the chance to kiss the Blarney Stone. The castle itself dates from 1446. Today, it is a partial ruin with some accessible rooms and the battlements, into one of which the Blarney Stone is embedded. It’s said that kissing the stone, the origin of which is much debated, imparts the ‘gift of the gab’ – eloquence in speech or flattery – something for which the Irish are particularly well known.

Another historical ‘must-see’ is The Book of Kells, a gorgeous, illuminated manuscript containing the Celtic gospels in Latin. Housed in the singularly impressive Trinity College Library in Dublin, it’s thought to have been created around AD800.

And, if you are interested in more recent Irish history, make sure you visit Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin, which housed many of the heroes and leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising against British rule. Long since repurposed as a museum, it tells a hugely interesting story.

Scenic Ireland

A great option to see large parts of Ireland is to travel the Wild Atlantic Way, a 2,500km route along the west coast and parts of the north and south coasts. Passing through nine counties and three provinces, it stretches from Donegal in the north to Kinsale, County Cork. Popular attractions along the way include the Cliffs of Moher and the Dingle Peninsula, from where you can take a dolphin watching trip.

Unsurprisingly, being an island, Ireland is blessed with numerous stunning beaches and though the weather is not quite what we’re used to in the Middle East, the waters are so clear and clean it’s hard not to take a dip, particularly if you’re visiting during summer. Keem Bay on County Mayo’s Achill Island has been named the number one wild swimming spot in the UK and Ireland. Clearly the place to go if

you’re tempted to take to the waves. And there are also loads of surfing spots, particularly Mullaghmore in County Sligo, which is rapidly gaining a reputation as a big-wave destination. Still in Mayo, if you want to get away from it all, head to Mayo Dark Sky Park which sits between the remote Nephin Mountain Range and the Atlantic Coast and boasts some of the darkest, most pristine skies in the world. On a clear night, you can see thousands of twinkling stars, along with other planets in our solar system, the Milky Way and even meteor showers, all with the naked eye.

Head north to County Antrim to visit the Giant’s Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and truly a spectacle to behold. Formed from 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the stones resemble a visible pavement, the tops of the columns forming stepping stones that lead from the cliff foot disappearing under the sea. The tallest is 12m high and, though their formation was undoubtedly geological, the ancient legend that credits the causeway to a battle between two giants is much more fun.

Sociable Ireland

The Irish are known the world over for their love of the ‘craic’ or a good party! And there are few better places to experience this than in Dublin’s Temple Bar. Found on the south bank of the River Liffey, the area is teeming

with nightlife – bars, clubs and restaurants –where you’ll find live music virtually every night of the week. There are two renovated squares, Meetinghouse Square, which hosts film screenings during the summer months, and the central Temple Bar Square, where you’ll find a book market on Saturdays and Sundays. Also check out Cow’s Lane Market on Saturdays for fashion and design pieces.

If you’re travelling in October, take the Jazz Train from Dublin to the Cork Jazz Festival – Ireland’s biggest jazz event, attracting more than 1,000 musicians and upwards of 40,000 visitors. In May, there’s the Kilkenny Roots Festival, which has been running for 25 years and attracts some of the biggest names in the Americana/Roots genre. Audiences wind their way through the mediaeval streets sampling the huge range of music in the 30 plus venues, hosting over 40 Irish and international acts. Kilkenny’s also home to The Cat Laughs Festival, a comedy extravaganza that’s billed as ‘Ireland’s favourite festival’.

And, in August, The Fleadh is an absolute must. Officially Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2024, it’s the country’s biggest gathering of traditional

musicians of all ages and has been running for more than 60 years across the country. This year’s host city is Wexford and it promises to be a blast. www.ireland.com

AN UNFORGETTABLE CULINARY EXPERIENCE

Perched at the edge of the marina in Porto Arabia, Kai’s Songbird, in the charming Corinthia Yacht Club, is nothing short of a whimsical wonderland. We walk through a corridor with an al fresco area on the right, overlooking luxury yachts at the Pearl, and glimmering wallpaper on the left. Avian-themed lights hang above us – and at the end of the corridor, beyond a large display of fresh green apples, we witness a beautiful symphony of sights, sounds and senses.

Green apples, a sign of peace and prosperity, playfully dot the décor and are a nod to the restaurant’s heritage (albeit red apples are the mainstay of Kai Mayfair, Kai's Songbird’s sister property in London). This is a fantastical reimagination of a garden from our dreams. We arrive shortly before sunset – and the timing is brilliant. Bathed in dusky golden-hour shades, the views are breathtaking from this venue and we can already tell this is going to be an unforgettable dining experience.

We’re seated right next to a massive centrepiece that brings the whole space together. Glass fronds hang from high above and gracefully sway in harmony. Lush greenery and modern design elements complement the fragrance of herbs and, of course, those fresh green apples. We can hear wind chimes every time a light breeze wafts through.

Kai’s Songbird serves Nanyang cuisine which made its very first appearance in Kai Mayfair. Nanyang cuisine was liberated by the cosmopolitan vibes of London, and the concept still stands strong 14 years and a Michelin star later.

The impeccable amalgamation of Chinese and Southeast Asian dishes reflects strongly in a well-thought-out menu. All the comfort classics have interesting twists and Prashant, our knowledgeable table host, suggests a few of their best sellers to kick off.

The Wasabi Prawns that arrive first, set the stage for more Nanyang goodness. Perfectly battered and doused in a light wasabi mayonnaise (even the haters will appreciate this one), this dish is easily a crowd pleaser. The Prawn Toast served next comes alongside a notable sweet chilli sauce. The Peking Duck Salad is a winner with pomegranate mixed in with baby cress and rocket. The dressing is light – a mix of honey, soy and lime – and refreshingly summery. Speaking of duck, there’s something better than the salad. London's Aromatic Crispy Duck is assembled tableside and is a must-try. The addition of the sambal sauce inside the pancake really lifts the dish to a whole new level of umami.

The Chilli Lobster Bao Sliders are a revelation. They transport us straight to Singapore, right in front of a large bowl of the world-famous Singapore Chilli Crab. We’ve dipped enough mantous in the savoury, spicy, greasy goodness that is the chilli gravy to recall that these freshly steamed and lightly fried baos taste exactly like that. The lobster takes it up a notch – it’s recognisable yet refined. There’s extra sauce to go along with them, and we aren’t shy with it.

The mains commence after a much-needed 15-minute digestion break. One of Kai's Songbird’s signature dishes, the Seabass in Black Bean Sauce and Mandarin Peel, is in perfect symphony with everything we’ve had so far. If this dining affair is a musical, the sea bass serenades our palate. The fish is flaky and delicious, and the simple black bean sauce has a citrusy high note from the mandarin peel.

Our next main arrives – a medium ribeye (the cook is recommended by the chef) with a honey and soya glaze. It is faultless and our steak knife slides right through. The sauce on the side is silky, spicy and has the earthy fragrances of coriander and lemongrass, sweetened by honey. Both dishes are complemented by the exceptional Spiced-Scented Fried Rice. It comes across as a simple rice dish, but it’s far from it. Incredible aromatics fill the air and every spoon feels like a hug. Fluffy grains are infused with Nanyang essences and the dish creates the perfect foil for the bolder flavours of the mains.

Familiar tastes and redefined textures meet modern cooking styles. Traditional dishes are levelled up with contemporary flair. Every order is impressive with creative plating. This is Michelin-star-worthy gastronomy and we are far too stuffed.

There’s a little space left for dessert, though. And Prashant serves up his top recommendations – a pandan sponge with coconut ice cream, topped with sago pearls, and an exciting dessert named Chocolate Does Grow on Trees.

Capped with a large but perfectly constructed sesame macaron, the Valrhona chocolate fondant cake playfully integrates hazelnuts, praline ice cream and chestnut paste, creating the perfect representation of a mini, and thankfully completely edible, mythical forest. Dessert adds the final flourish to our accurate prediction of this being an unforgettable experience. It’s the perfect end to a stellar night of epicurean excellence and there’s only one thing on our minds.

ENHANCED MEDITERRANEAN FLAVOURS

Palma, one of Bahrain’s newest eateries, offers comfort food with a twist. Fernanda Langhammer headed there to sample some of their signature dishes and must-tries.

The latest destination creating a lot of buzz is, without a doubt, the recently opened Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain. The first Raffles Hotel opened in Singapore in 1887 and has since been the place to go, from royalty and A-list celebrities to people just visiting for an Instagram click – a reference for ultimate luxury and personalisation.

The Raffles brand is known worldwide for embracing local culture, meaning no two properties are the same. Each has its own personality with the distinct signature of incredible sophistication, impeccably trained staff and butler service.

And it’s no different in Bahrain. Stepping into the lobby is like entering an entirely new universe. The crisp white walls patterned in Arab designs contrast with the greenery of various vases carefully distributed in the space which also has scattered black accents, such as the eye-catching fountain in the centre of this ample, welcoming area. The natural light coming from the ceiling creates a whimsical atmosphere. Beauty for the eyes that puts you in relaxing mode – an elegant retreat where simplicity meets awe-inspiring décor elements. It was not my first visit, but I have to say that the impeccable interiors get me every time. Everything is well-thought-out and flawless for a timeless style. Not that I would need an excuse to keep coming back but, this time, I

had a culinary mission: to experience Palma’s menu. Offering Mediterranean cuisine with a local twist, the restaurant follows the same laid-back sophistication seen throughout the property. White, gold and teal are the predominant shades in the décor, with crystal chandeliers following the same colour scheme. The seating arrangement is a mix of chairs and sofas surrounding round and square tables, painted in tones of sand and grey with pots of plants adding refreshing greenery.

The restaurant concept is a family-sharing style with an elevated experience of kitchen-to-table curation. The organic white plates caught my attention as they let the main component – the food – stand out. The ingredients are sourced from local farms, as sustainability and freshness are key in Raffles’ values. A highlight goes to the goat cheese, created exclusively for Palma. We started the feast with a basket of freshly baked bread, from sourdough with its distinctive tangy flavour to soft rolls, on which we spread the restaurant’s unique butter with sumac – a traditional Middle Eastern spice. Its deep red colour adds a sour taste, like lemon, but with an earthier note. Absolutely delicious! The starters were the Lemon Thyme Infused Slow Roasted Beetroot Salad and Kibbeh Mashwiya. I know beetroot is a vegetable many dislike, but I adore it. Its sweet and soillike zest is well balanced with green leaves, the crunchiness of sunflower seeds and small pieces of pumpkin chips working well with the star of the plate: goat cheese mousse. The balsamic dressing is made with watermelon juice and sour mango emulsion that expands the flavours of the fresh ingredients. I added all the elements for one perfect mouthful that delivered an explosion on my tongue, mixing textures and different levels of complexity. The kibbeh is made with minced lamb with a hint of local spices, pine nuts and raisins to lift the flavours. It has the perfect ratio of dough and filling, and the capsicum coulis and garlic yoghurt boost the taste experience – a traditional dish with an original touch. It was time for the mains. First, we had Samak Chermoula, fried seabream in a bed of lemon butter sauce mixed with charcoal dust and a finely chopped mix of parsley and capsicum placed between the fish and the sauce. The seabream was perfectly cooked and the black sauce added a visual effect to the dish – a pleasant surprise. The other plate, and my favourite, was the Black Seabass with Chinese artichoke, Pedron pepper and crustacean bisque. The fish was flaky and the smokiness of the bisque (made with grilled lobster and tomato base) added a salty contrast to the natural sweetness of the bass, a perfect combination. Last but not least, the 36-Hour Braised Lamb with garden roots such as carrots and sweet potatoes accompanied by Wild Mushroom Frikkeh Risotto. The meat was full of spices on the outside with a melting-fromthe-bone interior with juicy natural flavours. Frikkeh’s origins trace back to ancient Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria. It is grain made from young durum wheat, which is roasted and then polished to remove the shells. It has a very interesting texture and its mild flavour allowed the mushrooms' pungency to come alive. After the savoury feast, it was time to please

our sweet tooth with the signature creations from Chef Yazid Ichemrahen, World Pastry Champion. We had the 100% Vanille, a sleeklooking dessert layered with a base of biscuit noisette (ground hazelnut), on top of this, a thin gianduja paste, then a thick vanilla cream (where you can spot loads of black seeds) covered with a thin vanilla enrobage (a sugarand chocolate-based coating for confections). The name says it all: it is a vanilla concoction. The smell hit our nostrils before we tasted it, and the intense flavour was well balanced with the other ingredients’ lightness. I can say that it was the most perfect vanilla bite I ever had in my life. The other dessert was the Grand Cru Café. This one played with our taste buds; the different textures have a big role here. The coffee cloud, as one of my dining companions described it, was composed of a fine streusel (a more floury crumb), praline, iced coffee, caramel and caramelised hazelnut. You have to eat it as a spoonful, and the ingredients dance in your mouth; it gives a sensation that I can only recommend trying as the best way to describe it.
