BRAVO FOR BOCELLI

Superstar Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli is heading to Qatar as part of his 30th Anniversary Tour.

From humble beginnings singing in piano bars and taking part in local musical contests, Andrea signed his first recording contract with Sugar Music. He rose to fame in 1994 after winning the newcomers’ section at the 44th Sanremo Music Festival with a record score at the age of 35.

Over the years he has released 15 solo studio albums and has sold more than 75 million records worldwide – Con te partiro (Time to say goodbye) from his second album Bocelli, is one of the best-selling singles of all time.

Notable for his incredible stage presence, the blind tenor was born partially sighted and lost his remaining vision after being hit in the face with a football at the age of 12. But the musician didn’t let his disability stop him. As a child, he started piano lessons at age six and later learned to play the flute, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar and drums.

After finishing secondary school in 1980, he studied law at the University of Pisa and spent a year as a court appointed lawyer before beginning his musical career. Over the past 30 years, Andrea Bocelli has helped to bring

classical music to the mainstream and has also become equally popular as a crossover artist tackling modern chart music in his inimitable style.

He has held audiences spellbound in concerts accompanied by his own son and daughter and he even performed at England’s Windsor Castle during the Coronation of King Charles III.

No stranger to the Middle East, the tenor has appeared in the region on numerous occasions but this will be his first time taking to the stage in Qatar with a concert taking place at Lusail Multipurpose Hall on May 13.

Ticket categories are Emerald, priced 1,200, Gold QR900 and Silver priced QR300. Platinum and Diamond tickets are also available at QR3,000 and QR1,800, respectively. ✤

Get ready to greet Nigerian-Swiss DJ Laolu for a one-off performance at Monkey Tale, at Grand Hyatt Doha on May 3.

Born to a Nigerian father and a Swiss mother who, most appropriately, met in a record store in Berlin, Laolu spent his early years in Nigeria where his parents owned a jazz and soul club. After relocating to France, he attended music school to study saxophone and music theory, but on discovering Detroit techno pioneers Derrick May and Carl Craig at the age of 18, he sold his saxophone to buy his first drum machine. He then moved to Geneva where he started DJing and met Kadebostan who quickly became a musical co-conspirator. After 14 years on the European music scene, he has built a solid reputation in his hometown of Geneva and further afield such as Paris, Krakow and Tblisi.

Known for his ruff techno, heartwarming house and a unique style that’s both sophisticated and raw at the same time, he promises a full dance floor and an evening of great sounds. ✤ GO: VISIT WWW.MYSTIQUEMANAGEMENT.ME

A CULINARY JOURNEY WHERE TIMELESS FLAVOURS MEET HISTORICAL CHARM

Four Seasons Resort and Residences at The Pearl-Qatar introduces Chicago Rare, an authentic steakhouse and bar that pays tribute to Chicago’s speakeasies, offering a blend of old school charm and exceptional cuisine.

Nestled within the glamorous Four Seasons Resort and Residences at The Pearl-Qatar, Chicago Rare is a culinary destination steeped in the rich history of Chicago’s 1920s era. Launched on April 19, this vintage steakhouse exudes an authentic ambience reminiscent of the city’s historic speakeasies. Through its stunning interiors featuring subtle Art Deco undertones and artwork and globally sourced meats, Chicago Rare promises to transport guests to the vibrant social life during the 1920s.

The menu showcases USDA Prime beef brought from renowned farms across the USA, freshly sourced or aged to perfection for unparalleled tenderness. Accompanying the succulent steaks are signature sauces, mouth-watering side dishes and a selection of artisanal bread, creating a dining experience that is both nostalgic and indulgent. The venue’s live grill boasts a meticulously crafted Josper Oven and grill, showcasing the excitement of cooking over live fire, providing a great connection between the guests and the chefs.

Spearheading the opening of Chicago Rare is Rodney Belanger, a veteran with more than two decades of experience in the realm of hospitality. And leading the kitchen is Executive Chef Christian Gosselin, who has more than two decades of experience working across various renowned restaurants.

“We are pleased to introduce Chicago Rare, a vintage steakhouse that offers a new take on authentic dining in Doha, adding to the allure of our property,” said Mehdi Zaanoun, General Manager Four Seasons Resort and

Residences at The Pearl-Qatar. “Chicago Rare is more than just a dining haven; it’s a journey through the vibrant 1920s in the USA, where creativity, courage, delectable cuisine and music come together to create unforgettable experiences for all guests.”

In addition to its impeccable cuisine, Chicago Rare offers captivating entertainment experiences, with live jazz performances, swing bands and curated playlists that transport guests to a world of lively rhythms and nostalgic songs. Jazz bands will be performing every Thursday and Friday.

The restaurant’s design has been thoughtfully crafted to incorporate elements of a traditional speakeasy, such as dim lighting, reimagining the essence of the 1920s in a modern setting. Luxurious leather seating, rich wood tones and brass accents add to the elegance and historical appeal, making every visit a journey to the past.

The steakhouse also has an outdoor terrace, Breeze Bay Terrace, featuring a bar and low tables surrounded by greenery to further enhance the experience.

The restaurant warmly invites everyone to embark on a culinary and cultural voyage, where each dish tells a story of passion, tradition and the timeless allure of the 1920s. ✤

A TOUCH OF NOSTALGIA

Get ready to relive some of pop’s glory days as singer-songwriter James Blunt, brings his Who We Used To Be Tour to the stage in Qatar.

The new tour is a journey through the popular singer’s musical evolution. His star-studded career has been defined by a series of hits and Doha can expect to be serenaded to the hauntingly beautiful You’re Beautiful ; the soulful ballad, Goodbye My Lover ; the nostalgic 1973 and many more including the new album’s first single, Beside You

The former British Army officer is celebrating 20 years in the music business having released seven albums since 2004, with more than 20 million records sold worldwide. From performing for Kosovan villagers and his fellow soldiers, his guitar strapped to the outside of his tank, Blunt left the military to pursue a career in music but, despite initial interest from the likes of EMI, a record contract remained elusive – partly due to the industry’s belief that his posh accent would alienate the UK’s record-buying public.

It was not until Linda Perry, who was in the process of starting her own label, heard him perform at South by Southwest Music Festival, she signed him straight away and his career took off.

Fun Facts

During recording his first album, Back to Bedlam, the singer lodged with actress Carrie Fisher. Fisher contributed in naming the album, and he recorded the song Goodbye My Lover in her bathroom.

Though primarily resident in Ibiza, James Blunt also owns a chalet in the Swiss Alpine village of Verbier, where he has a ski lift named after him. And, in 2012, alongside motorcycle racer Carl Fogarty and rugby player Lawrence Dallaglio, he opened a restaurant at the top of the ski lift called La Vache.

An active user of social media platform X (formerly Twitter) Blunt is known for his self-deprecating humour and, in 2020, Constable published a compendium of his tweets as a book called How to Be a Complete and Utter Blunt: Diary of a Reluctant Social Media Sensation

He will be performing at Doha Golf Club on May 23 and tickets start at QR295.✤

Adore Again

Believe it or not, we’ve found Qatar’s only thrift shop. OK, it’s not a permanent physical presence, yet. But the intention is definitely there and, in the meantime, you can find Adore Again at pop-ups and various markets. Born in June 2023, co-founder Aditi Singh explains: “The inspiration came from personal experiences among myself and my two cofounders, we own an extensive wardrobe and often find ourselves purchasing new items for every occasion. We frequently admired and exchanged each other’s dresses, which sparked the realisation of how beneficial a larger-scale exchange could be – not just for us, but for the environment as well. This led to the creation of Adore Again, aiming to extend the life of clothes, accessories, books, toys, art and home decor through a community-driven platform.”

Good Finds Market

And, if that wasn’t enough, check out the collaboration between Torba Market and Qatar Museums. It’s a platform to educate about the circular economy and keep items out of landfill. With the tagline “Bringing independent artists, vintage lovers and retro revellers to Doha’s most creative space!” it’s a brilliant initiative where you’ll find all sorts from vintage furniture to homemade foods and loads more. The latest pop-up took place at Doha Fire Station and, though that’s done for the current season, keep your eyes peeled for news of the next initiative, The Shore at West Bay Beach. Torba Farm

Still on the subject of sustainability, we couldn’t be more in love with Torba Farm. Five years ago, twins Mohammed and Fatma Al Khater took over the family farm. Mohammed had developed an interest in reviving time-honoured Arabic medicinal herbs and re-establishing native Qatari flora, particularly plants that had traditional uses in the local culture, either as food or as medicine. Fatma had grown aware of the disconnect that we have as a population with the land and our understanding of where our food comes from. She was inspired by the farmers markets of the UK and wanted to be able use the farm to grow organic fresh produce, then create a local market in an effort to reconnect people with their food and inspire a new community of like-minded people.

Five years on and Torba is a haven for wildlife and organic production that’s built a community of enthusiasts and sustainable entrepreneurship. Find them at www.torba.qa

Qur’anic Botanic Garden (QBG)

A world-first for Qatar and a place we can’t wait to visit, QBG exhibits the plants mentioned in the Holy Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH). It aims to enhance and spread knowledge about these plants, the terms associated with them and how they are cared for and preserved. Based on the Islamic principles that encourage environmental conservation and preservation, QBG applies a comprehensive programme for plant conservation in Qatar both for plants in their natural habitat and elsewhere and it also runs programmes to increase local knowledge. Barzan Towers

Certainly not something new but definitely worth a visit, the Barzan Towers are found about 20km north of Doha in the village of Umm Salal Mohammed, which was developed in 1910 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Jassim Al Thani. Folklore suggests they may have been used as lookouts for the pearling ships but, their distance from the shore renders this unlikely and it’s more possible they were used to monitor the surrounding village and arable lands. Restored in 2014, they’re now situated in a garden with native plants, perfect for an interesting day trip.

Shadows Travelling on the Sea of the Day

If your tastes run to the somewhat other worldly, then this one’s for you. A site-specific installation in the desert to the north of Al Zubarah, the piece is the work of Icelandic-Danish artist Olafur Eliasson. The 20 circular shelters, three single rings and two double rings that make up the installation seem be scattered about the desert landscape at random but they are, in fact, sited with mathematical precision. Their mirrored rooves form fantastical shapes inviting contemplation in the desert’s peaceful silence. Find out more information @qm.org.qa

LIVE AND LOUD

As the new season starts, live music comes to the fore and we took the chance to catch up with some of the bands who’ll be entertaining you across Qatar throughout the summer and beyond. Read on to discover what they had to say.

ALIEN CULTURE

Who are Alien Culture – who’s who and who does what?

Alien Culture is a multicultural group of musicians brought together by a shared love of music. We have our singer Kevin Cronly, our keyboard player Prince George, our drummer Hamdi Damak, our guitarist Avon Francis and our bassist Dilan Senn, each with their own unique talents and backgrounds. We usually stick to our own instruments, although we’re sometimes seen switching around on stage.

What brought you all to Qatar and how was the band formed?

Our paths led us to Qatar for various reasons, but music has always been a common thread. We’d been separately involved in the music scene since the mid-2000s. The band was formed out of boredom during COVID, with a few friends meeting up to jam and quickly forming the group since we saw something special.

What kind of music do you play and what’s your favourite song to perform?

We enjoy playing a wide range of genres, including rock, pop, funk, reggae, jazz and more. We love putting our own spin on cover songs, making them fresh and exciting for the audience. As for favourites, they change depending on the mood and the crowd's energy. But we all agree that there's nothing quite like the feeling of getting everyone moving with a killer groove.

Where can our readers see you performing?

You can catch us live at the Irish Harp located at the Sheraton Hotel, where we’re currently on our second stint as the resident band. We play there five nights a week, but also do special gigs around town. We recommend checking out the schedule on our website for upcoming gigs!

ALIEN CULTURE

CROSSTOWN TRAFFIC

Please introduce the band – who’s who and who does what?

Hi! On lead vocals we have Jamie from Ireland. Lead guitar and backing vocals is Leo from Brazil, while Vitor from Portugal is on rhythm guitar and backing vocals. On drums, we have Perkison from Brazil and Emz from the Philippines on bass guitar. Emz is our newest member having joined the band in January 2024; the rest of us have been together since October 2022!

How long have you all been in Qatar and what originally brought you here?

I think we are a great representation of the society as we all come from different areas of the world and work in different fields.

We all have regular day jobs in education, aviation, the media and construction, but we were brought together by our love of performing and music.

Who are your musical influences and what style of music do you play?

When you’re in a band, it’s important to all share in the same vision, but it’s also important for each individual to bring their own influences. We all share a love of classic acts like Metallica, Queen, Jimi Hendrix, ACDC, Blink 182 and lots of other legendary rock bands. However, we are also really open to discovering

new music and we incorporate music from artists like Dua Lipa, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and more. We especially love when we can mix two artists together! For example, we do several mashups: ACDC and Bruno Mars; Metallica and Stevie Wonder. Ultimately, we are a rock n roll band – but we love to adapt songs of all genres to our style.

What’s been your most memorable gigging experience in Qatar and why?

A couple of experiences spring to mind. Our first ever gig at The Backyard at Doha Golf Club just before the FIFA World Cup was amazing as it was so full of people! We also played The Backyard’s New Year’s Eve Party in 2023 and the atmosphere was electric! Recently, we played at The Lusail Festival of Speed featuring Qatar MotoGP sponsored by Qatar Airways…playing at Lusail International Circuit seemed to really suit our style!

Where can our readers see you performing?

Our agency, Candela Entertainment, works with a brilliant range of clients across the city. We play regularly at Tropicana 360 Paradiso Brunch at The Dusit Hotel and Suites, Bubbalicious Brunch at The Westin Hotel and The Backyard at Doha Golf Club. However, please follow us on Instagram @crosstowntrafficdoha to keep up with all our upcoming dates.

THE EXILES

When did you join The Exiles and what sort of music does the band play?

Frontman, Peter Gibson: I joined The Exiles, now one of Doha’s longest continuously running bands, in 2007 as a bass player. I left for a year to play in another band and then re-joined as a lead singer in 2009, before becoming the lead singer-bass player in 2010. I kept in touch with many of the band members and, upon my return in 2021, re-joined the band again. I am fairly easy to recognise with my long, ginger-turned-platinum-blond hair, kilt and combat boots. The band plays guitar-based pop-rock, primarily Top 40 UK hits from the 1960s until today.

The band seems to be a bit of a moveable feast with lots of different members over the years, how does this affect the music?

The Exiles was formed by Peter Doole, Neil Wise and Patric Lundin in 2005 and has been running continuously until today. I am currently the longest-serving member, with my tenure spread over three different periods. Ironically, since I was away from Qatar during the pandemic, some fans of the band were unaware that I had left Qatar when they saw me on stage again. To date, there have been 41 different members, from all corners of the world, so I would say that your phrase ‘moveable feast’ is on point. There has always been at least one band member to span the gap in vacancies, maintaining momentum and band style. Different members and combinations of members have tried on new musical styles, but The Exiles seems to have a personality of its own, and always settles back into its familiar genre, which is simply songs people like to hear but with The Exiles feel to them.

How would you describe the live music scene in Qatar?

It is incredible! There are so many talented musicians in Doha now, both amateur and professional. Before I first arrived in Doha, there were a few bands, and I was fortunate to meet musicians through The Doha Players Theatre Group’s Open Mic Nights (OMN). I ran the OMN for several years and watched many musicians connect and form groups through these introductions, as well as develop entertainment companies. With the advent of Facebook (and other forms of social media), these connections became easier to make, not just for musicians but also their fans, who had a place to be able to follow their favourite band; and so, the live music scene exploded. You can find live music every night of the week in Doha, as well as at day-time brunches and multi-band gigs or festivals are frequent events.

THE HOODRATS

The band’s name is interesting. Where did it come from?

The Hoodrats have a unique distinctive name, which translates to being tough and strong. We selected the name by each member writing down our favourite options then drawing a selection from a cup.

Who’s who and who does what?

The Hoodrats is a cover band performing old school hip hop, reggae and funk tunes. Band members include Pinto from South Africa as lead vocalist, Andrew Withana from Sri Lanka on keyboards, Yasun Chanukah, also from Sri Lanka, on electric guitar, and Anderson Mora from Venezuela on drum and bass. We’re friends who decided it would be fun to come together as a band.

How do you choose which music to play? Do you ever disagree?

HERITAGE FOR A MODERN AGE

FACT took to the roads in Maserati’s new high-performance model, the GranTurismo, a fully loaded beast with cutting-edge tech and a whole lot of style.

• CITY RIDES

The first Maserati GranTurismo was introduced to the public 75 years ago with the release of the classic A6 1500. Today, the globally renowned sports car manufacturer has breathed fresh life into GranTurismo’s lineage with the unveiling of a stunning new model.

We were invited by the team at Alfardan Sports Motors Maserati Qatar to test drive the brand’s latest creation, an opportunity we whole-heartedly accepted.

EXHILARATING EXTERIOR

The moment we laid eyes on the GranTurismo, we were captivated by its unique yet immediately recognisable lines. Maserati have maintained the classic proportions that fans of this two-door, four-seater sports coupé have admired for so long, while managing to further enhance its already massive appeal.

The elongated bonnet announces the car in style, a feature that kept us staring at the front end for quite some time, taking in the sheer beauty of the design. Adding to the fresh and sporty feel of the face are vertical lights that lead the eye to the car’s black front grille, with gloss black slats and brushed chrome outline, complete with the brand’s iconic 3D trident logo.

Shifting our attention to the flanks, we appreciated the intersection of the bonnet and central body with the three iconic Maserati air vents. Adding to the sporty prowess of the GranTurismo is the sloping roofline highlighting the overall aerodynamic design of the vehicle, dropping dramatically to emphasise the curve of the pillar – which also features the trident logo. The 20-inch wheels at the front and 21-inch at the back, coupled with prominent brake callipers, hint at the sporty performance of this potent-looking sports car.

At the back end, we immediately noticed the fresh, full LED taillights, the design of which is a mix between the brand's classic boomerang and harpoon forms. The brushed chrome accent above the rear trident logo and the chromeplated exhaust terminals add further touches of class to the distinguished exterior design.

INTOXICATING INTERIOR

Once inside the GranTurismo, we sat in amazement absorbing the sheer mastery that Maserati have managed to accomplish. Even though we expected only the best from this luxury brand, they still managed to surprise and impress with the intoxicating nature of the interior.

The pure and contemporary feel of the luxurious cabin is achieved through the seamless merging of Italian artisan tradition and state-of-the-art technology. What was also instantly recognisable, was how every interior component is devoted to functionality, with all controls in touch format. The absence of a gear lever means the space now features a series of useful compartments that offered a great spacious impact.

The quality craftsmanship of the distinctive dashboard stood out, with its slim and elegant upper section appearing to soar over the main part beneath. Other must-mention interior features include the sporty yet comfortable seating in both the front and the rear, along with the new multifunctional sports steering wheel.

fact magazine 37
CITY RIDES •

The more we looked around the cabin, the more we noticed the use of top-end materials and an obsessive attention to every detail.

INFOTAINMENT & TECHNOLOGY

Although the look and feel of Maserati’s latest GranTurismo is beyond impressive, it was only once we took a good look at the included tech that the car began to raise itself well above other would-be competitors in the luxury sports car segment. Firstly, the Maserati Intelligent Assistant (MIA) system delivers an unparalleled digital experience, providing fluidity and responsiveness, as well as allowing for online updates and customisation. We also admired the new, tailor-made digital interfaces that provide an exceptional setup. The GranTurismo houses a 12.3-inch central display and an 8.8-inch comfort display. Both touchscreens are ergonomically positioned to facilitate easy access to the controls and the system is very user-friendly. Maserati’s exclusive new quick gesture control allowed us to effortlessly control the cabin’s temperature without taking our eyes off the road ahead. Even more impressive was the reconfigurable head-up display that minimises driver distractions by projecting key information such as speed, maps and directions directly onto the windscreen.

Our other must-mention tech features include the 12.2-inch digital dashboard that wraps around the steering wheel and the classic Maserati digital clock with multiple customisable functionalities. Additionally, the exceptional Sonus faber sound system and the digital rear-view mirror that changes into a display for the rear-view camera raise the GranTurismo to an even higher level of excellence.

PERFORMANCE & SAFETY

Once we managed to pull ourselves away from the incredible design details, it was time to get the new GranTurismo out onto the road. Maserati have powered the model with the performance focused engine, The Nettuno – a six-cylinder engine with twinturbos, giving you 490hp in the Modena version and 550hp in the Trofeo trim. In any engine trim, you are pressed back to your seats with a smile spread from ear-to-ear. We were pleased to experience the control delivered by the steering, braking and suspension system. The car is not only super-fast but effortlessly handles corners, even at higher speeds. We were also impressed that the GranTurismo has an allwheel drive transmission for the added traction to keep you safe on slick roads.

A rotary dial on the steering wheel allowed us to select between four driving modes. COMFORT for a relaxed journey, GT for everyday city driving and SPORT for an exhilarating dose of performance experience. The Trofeo Engine trim is also equipped with the CORSA driving mode for that extra track performance the Italians are known for. The GranTurismo gave us an interactive driving experience through its comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance and safety features.

TROFEO

The Trofeo is the version with the highest performance capabilities in the new GranTurismo trims, powered by the Nettuno engine. The explicit focus is on performance, while never sacrificing comfort. This trim level is suited to enthusiasts of sports and adrenaline-fuelled performance, based on a high-performance engine paired with an elegant and luxurious silhouette. ✤

The front design is further accentuated with an expanded air intake, Active Air Flap and four air vents, which improve engine cooling while also contributing to the coupe SUV's bold appeal. Nissan has unveiled its exclusive 2024 Patrol Super Safari model for the GCC region.

The new Al Ostoura, which literally translates to ‘The Legend’ in Arabic, is a GCC-exclusive model that pays homage to the Patrol Super Safari’s rich heritage and connection to the people of the region.

Affectionately referred to as the VTC, the Patrol Super Safari is based on the fifth-generation Nissan Patrol, which was originally produced from 1997 to 2010. The model’s formidable all-terrain capabilities and class-leading power made it a popular SUV for off-road enthusiasts and thrill-seekers in the Gulf region. The enduring customer demand for this model in the GCC led to its revival in 2016 as the Patrol Super Safari – and it has been in production ever since.

The 2024 Al Ostoura edition marks the culmination of the legacy of the fifth-generation Patrol and features various exterior and interior design enhancements inspired by the region’s desert landscape.

Additional distinctions to the model include special badges on its rear pillar and engine, which feature ‘Al Ostoura since 1951’ engraved in Arabic calligraphy, alongside the SUV’s iconic silhouette.

The model’s spare tyre cover and fender garnish also bare a unique recurring design motif that’s inspired by the Arabian desert dunes, that are also visible on interior elements such as the centre console badge and floor mats. While the rich colour

palette, featuring two exterior colour schemes, is complemented by 17-inch alloy wheels, distinctive body stickers and contrasting exterior inserts on the roof, bumpers and wheel arches.

When it comes to performance the 2024 Patrol Super Safari Al Ostoura is powered by a 4.8-litre, in-line six-cylinder engine that delivers a striking 280hp and 451Nm of torque. Featuring Valve Timing Control (VTC) and the Nissan Induction Control System (NICS), it boasts exceptional off-road performance and an impressive top speed on the highway. The power is seamlessly directed through a five-speed automatic or manual transmission. The model features electronically controlled power steering for smooth control at low speeds and firm handling at high speeds. It is further complemented by cruise control, a tyre pressure monitoring system, ABS, dual-front SRS airbags, and Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) to ensure a safer and more connected driving experience, both on and off road.

Thierry Sabbagh, President, Nissan Saudi Arabia, INFINITI Middle East and Managing Director, Nissan Middle East, said: “The ‘Al Ostoura’ special edition encapsulates the spirit of the Patrol Super Safari and is our way to express our gratitude to the people of the region who have made it more than just a vehicle, but a cherished part of our shared heritage.” ✤

Garmin launches new heart rate monitor made for women.

Fitness trackers have seamlessly become part of our everyday lives. In most cases, wrist-based devices are plenty useful and do a satisfactory job, but fall short when it comes to accurate heart rate tracking compared to dedicated devices. Addressing that issue is the Garmin HRM-Fit, a new heart rate monitor developed specifically for women.

Designed paying special attention to comfort alongside functionality, the device features a unique clip-on design that’s been optimised to fit with medium and high-support sports bras. Precisely tracking one’s heart beats per minute lets users correctly gauge their effort level during exercise, which then allows them to adjust training parameters and stay on top of stress levels.

The HRM-Fit accurately captures real-time heart rate and training data for a variety of activities, including running, indoor and outdoor cycling, strength training, HIIT (highintensity interval training) and many others.

Users can effectively track the way they move and in turn understand their bodies better. The device transmits the heart rate and performance data via Bluetooth direct to compatible devices and apps – such as Garmin smartwatches, Edge cycling

computers, the Tacx Training app and more.

In situations where users happen to take off or not wear their compatible smartwatch, the HRM-Fit captures steps, calories burnt, intensity minutes and all-day heart rate. It conveniently stores all the workout data and updates all compatible Garmin devices via the Garmin Connect smartphone app. ✤

You’ve dedicated 16 years to the Hilton chain across different locations. What aspects of Hilton's culture and values have resonated with you the most, and how do you plan to integrate them into your leadership at Hilton Salwa Beach Resort & Villas? By nurturing talent, providing training and fostering a supportive environment, we’ll elevate our team members’ skills.

& Villas as the leading family-inclusive resort in the region. Our facilities are meticulously designed to cater to families, creating an environment where happiness abounds and cherished memories are made. From our family-friendly amenities to multigenerational travel experiences, every detail contributes to a sense of joy and togetherness.

Tell us a bit about how you started your career in the hospitality industry…

Growing up in a hotel environment back in Malta, I was immersed in the world of hospitality from an early age. Both my parents worked in hotels, and their passion for creating memorable guest experiences left a lasting impression on me. Inspired by my father’s footsteps, I set a clear career goal: to become a hotel general manager.

Through determination and hard work, I achieved that goal. But beyond the professional milestones, what truly enriches my journey are the unexpected places I’ve lived and the diverse cultures I’ve encountered. Each destination has been a classroom, teaching me valuable lessons about people, service, and adaptability.

Now, as a parent myself, I’ve extended this unique education to my three children. Samuel, my 10-year-old son, is about to experience his third country. I believe that growing up in hotels fosters an open global mindset – an education that transcends textbooks and enriches the soul.

Can you share a memorable experience or achievement, either personal or professional, that you're particularly proud of?

Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to cross paths with inspiring personalities, including Heads of State. However, one achievement stands out – the transformation of Seychelles’ hospitality landscape during my time there. With an exceptional team by my side, we embarked on an

ambitious journey. In just five years, Hilton expanded its portfolio there from three properties to six, each under a different brand. I was fortunate enough to be leading the team at the time and it was an incredibly rewarding experience as we successfully opened Mango House Seychelles, LXR Hotels and Resorts amid the challenges posed by the pandemic.

More recently, I got to experience the debut of Waldorf Astoria Seychelles Platte Island – a remote paradise. The culmination of hard work and dedication from the team there to make this possible was truly inspiring and the end result was breathtakingly beautiful.

You transitioned from the beaches of Seychelles to the vibrant city of Doha. What aspects of Doha are you most excited to explore?

Strategically nestled along the sun-drenched southwest coast of Qatar, the Hilton Salwa Beach Resort & Villas seamlessly blends beachfront opulence with exhilarating theme-park experiences. Our 3.5-kilometre private beach offers an exclusive haven for discerning guests.

But our resort transcends mere tranquility. Enter the Desert Falls Water & Adventure Park. With over 19 attractions and 30 rides and slides, it caters to thrill-seekers, families and corporate groups alike. Picture the shared moments of joy that define unforgettable vacations. Salwa reveals its most captivating secret in sunsets ablaze with the hues of tangerine and rose, mirrored in the tranquil waters. And then there are the dolphins, those intelligent and playful denizens of the sea. Imagine connecting with them as they dance alongside your boat.

Our culinary offerings are equally exceptional. Seven signature restaurants await, each a culinary odyssey.

AN EVENTFUL CAREER

Kharrat,

founder of IEC, introduces his company and explains how his sports career helped him achieve success in his corporate and music careers.

Please tell us about IEC – what does the company do and how long has it been running?

We are a full-service global marketing and production agency based originally in Qatar, UAE and Beirut. Our staff are based between Doha and Beirut. We deliver projects across all aspects of the events industry such as festivals and concerts, including liaising with artists and entertainers. And we have our own equipment from audio and visuals to lighting. We also work with many corporates within the hotel and retail industries supporting events, exhibitions and interiors services. We have been in the industry for more than 10 years already.

What prompted you to go into this line of business and how, among stiff competition, have you managed to achieve success?

At the age of 15, I was competing in international sports events and travelling from one country to another to attend competitions as an athlete representing Lebanon. I was always fascinated with the stadiums and venues we competed in and the level of organisation at these events. I was interested in the details like who were the sponsors, where did they come from, why did they sponsor an event and how much were they paying to have their brands represented? These questions were always in my mind and I wanted answers. Finally, this is what drove me to study business administration at the American University of Beirut and led me to work in events and marketing.

I started my career as a freelancer in sports events such as the Beirut International Marathon and got the opportunity to work in Qatar in 2007 with IFP Qatar at exhibitions and conferences, that gave me experience in the corporate aspects of the events industry. Afterwards, I was recruited by the Qatar Olympic Committee in 2009 and worked in more than 25 World Championships and international tournaments.

After gaining the agency and client-side experience, I studied the Qatari market well and had the vision to open my own company. I saw an opportunity within the production aspect of events. I’ve had the chance to work on many prestigious projects such as the opening ceremony of the FIFA Arab Cup.

In the events industry, you always have to deliver, you have no choice. But you consider you've succeeded when you are on point and provide a quality finish for your customers. So far, yes, we have been able to achieve many successful events and that’s why we are here today.

You have been involved with many major events, what are some of the biggest ones and which are you most proud of?

As mentioned earlier, one of the biggest events I have worked on was the opening ceremony of the FIFA Arab Cup in 2021 that was considered as a test event for the World Cup in 2022.

Joe Kharrat Joe Kharrat, known as Anti Soshal performing @Society Doha

The 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championship is one of my most favourite events, since it was the first international event I ever worked on.

What are some of the greatest challenges you face in putting together your part of a major event?

I always face a challenge in finding the right resources at the right time since Qatar is quite of a small market and we always must look outside the country to find these resources.

Outside of work, you’re a keen motorcyclist and runner and involved in music. What is your favourite way to spend your spare time?

Each hobby gives you a different type of feeling and that’s why I like to spend my spare time in doing different pursuits. On the bike, there is a definite adrenaline rush; running and exercising brings your stress levels down after a long day at work in front of your computer and running from one meeting to another. Nowadays, music is taking more time in my life since I’m DJing on an international level. ✤

ITALIAN MASTERY

Valerio Pulitani, Executive Chef at La Spiga, Doha, delves into how his upbringing has shaped his approach to Italian gastronomy.

fact magazine 60
• VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN

What inspired you to pursue a career as a chef, and how has your upbringing in Rome influenced your culinary style?

As a child, I was always fascinated with the work that chefs did in the kitchen. Looking at them sparked my imagination, painting a picture of adventures like a world of pirates and authorities. I looked at them with respect and admiration. Furthermore, I grew up in a family that always had good food on the table, and this has played a fundamental role in my journey and fostered an appreciation for good food at an early age. I was also fortunate to grow up in Rome as it’s an area that is known for its culinary tradition and renowned chef schools.

With 20 years of experience in the industry, what are some of the most valuable lessons you've learned along the way and how do they continue to impact your cooking philosophy?

Cooking has shaped my character and I have learned a lot from all the people I have met in my career. One of the most significant lessons I learned is the importance of humility and

open mindedness as there is always something new to learn. By remaining humble and receptive to new ideas, I’ve been able to continually grow and expand my skills. Also, I’ve learnt to never judge a book by its cover and to never give up! In the kitchen, challenges are inevitable, but it’s how we overcome them that defines us as chefs.

If you were stranded on a deserted island, which three kitchen tools would you consider absolutely essential to have with you?

A knife, a lighter and a pan!

What is the story behind your signature dish at La Spiga, and what makes it stand out among the other Italian culinary offerings at the restaurant?

The fresh pasta we make at La Spiga is one of the dishes I am most proud of. Every time I prepare it, I am reminded of my country. Every batch of pasta at La Spiga is made fresh daily, using only the best ingredients to ensure it’s authentically Italian. It is prepared the same way we do in Italy. ✤

CONSISTENCY AND QUALITY TO THE FORE

Fadi El Haddad, Executive Chef at Pullman Doha West Bay, talks management style and new developments.

fact magazine 62
CHEF IN FOCUS

What is your earliest kitchen memory that inspired you to become a chef?

I grew up around food and restaurants in Beirut. In addition, my mother’s food has a special taste and aroma using fresh ingredients. These things inspired me to study hotel management to become a chef. Cooking with passion and sprinkling in a touch of soul, that’s what makes the difference to my food.

What is the secret to managing such a large team? With 60 chefs under your direction, there must be challenges ensuring that everyone is working well together and high quality is maintained?

Trusting your team and building good relations with the chefs definitely has a big impact on having smooth operations. You need to give a free hand to the seniors so the juniors learn to be decision makers, evaluating situations and solving issues. You must also put the emphasis on consistency, quality and brand standards to keep our guests satisfied.

Are there any new developments – restaurant outlets, menu revisions etc… for patrons to look forward to in the coming months at Pullman?

Menu revisions happen every six months and we make changes according to market trends and guest evaluation, injecting new dishes based on local ingredients, for example our Camel Burger. We have a new menu for BiCE business lunch and we’re also introducing the QATARITALY Brunch for Qataris and residents and the Italian community to discover cultural dishes from Italy at BiCE restaurant.

Further, we plan to open the elegant hookah lounge serving traditional and fusion dishes to our clientele on the third floor.

What is your signature or favourite dish, how was it developed and what makes it popular?

As a Lebanese Mediterranean chef my speciality cuisine is a combination from the countries around the Mediterranean Sea. However, I also enjoy experimenting with different ceviches which shine due to their fresh ingredients and bright, local flavours. ✤

NIKKEI NARRATIVES

• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT
Echoes of Peru and Japan greeted AMS on a visit to TONO by Akira Back.

TONO by Akira Back is a dining destination where Japanese finesse meets Peruvian flair, a creation of the renowned Chef of the same name. Drawing inspiration from his heritage and his mother's artistic influence, the restaurant is adorned with her artworks, adding a deeply personal touch. Leading the culinary team is Chef Hyungmin Bae, who brings over a decade of experience, embodying the innovative spirit of Nikkei cuisine that is at the heart of the venue.

In the inviting reception area, a large, round window framed the city's lights. A central neon sign dominated the space, surrounded by elegant vases and lush green plants that softened the modern aesthetic. Plush blue sofas paired with orange cushions offered a cosy nook for private conversations.

Wandering through the dining area before settling into our al fresco seats, we were greeted by a kaleidoscope of colours. Above us, a modern sculpture wound upwards like branches reaching for the sun. The blend of contemporary design and natural inspiration gave the place a feeling of being both new and timelessly welcoming.

Scintillating Starters

Our culinary journey took a welcome turn when Chef Hyungmin Bae himself arrived at our table. His radiant smile was as inviting as the array of dishes he began to introduce. With enthusiasm, he painted the picture of TONO's vision, blending Japanese precision with Peruvian passion in every creation. As he finished his introduction, the Crab Salad appeared before us. This delicate lacework of flavours cradled sweet whispers of the sea, with the Nikkei mayo

acting as a gentle tide against the playful crackle of tobiko.

As we moved to the Salmon Tataki, it was like savouring the sunset itself, the seared edges a dusky blush against the cool, pink centre, all dressed in a truffle ponzu that painted each bite with the richness of twilight.

The Nikkei Ceviche unravelled as a tapestry of the ocean's bounty, with the sesame ponzu dressing drizzling over the salmon like the first rain of spring, invoking a symphony of delicate blossoms on the palate.

Shared Delights

As we soaked in the vibrant atmosphere, the hot starters made their entrance. The Akira Back Pizza unfolded as an avant-garde masterpiece, its crisp corn base a canvas for the vivid splashes of cholo and aioli, the parmesan dusting reminiscent of a light snowfall on a vibrant mosaic.

The Jumbo Prawn commanded its own spotlight, each bite an extravagant affair. The prawn itself, gloriously plump and perfectly seared, swam in a decadent pool of dynamite sauce which presented an explosive blend of spices, clinging to the succulent flesh. The rich, oceanic sweetness melded beautifully with the fiery sauce, compelling us to indulge in just one more bite.

The Bao Wagyu was a tender embrace, the Wagyu's rich marbling melting like a kiss on the lips, the bulgogi sauce murmuring sweet nothings of savoury delight. And as for the Bao Lobster, it was as if we were savouring the essence of a summer feast, the aji dynamite sauce, the culinary equivalent of fireworks against the night sky.

Everything we encountered made it clear that Tono offered an

enchantment of the senses. The plates with their intricate Incan designs cradling impeccable cuisine. Gold cutlery, complete with rests, added a touch of elegance. Service flowed seamlessly. The whole event was akin to observing an athlete in their prime – every move a study in disciplined excellence. It felt like a masterclass in hospitality, from tableware to taste.

Signature Mains

Nowhere was this more apparent than in the exquisite main courses. We began with the Wagyu Tajima Striploin, its seared edges hinting at the careful tending of flames. The beef was tender, each slice parting effortlessly beneath our knives, its richness unadorned but for the occasional burst of sea salt that we found ourselves chasing with each bite. The side of celeriac puree was a gentle contrast, its creaminess an understated backdrop to the robust beef, while the furikake brought a discreet crunch, a nod to the sea's bounty.

The Arroz con Mariscos was a hearty embrace, a dish that spoke of the sea without pretence. The grains of rice, tinged with the golden hue of saffron, were the perfect carriers for the delicate prawn, tender squid and open mussels, each spoonful a celebration of simple ocean flavours. The subtle richness of the garlic cream bound the elements together in a dish that felt like a homecoming, each bite a step closer to the heart of coastal cooking. Outside on the terrace, our evening was filled with lively chatter and levity. To our left, a group of friends shared stories and laughs. To our right, international visitors savoured their meals,

clearly awed by the distinctive creations. Meanwhile, our server kept topping up our water and serving creative mocktails that added a refreshing touch to our lively discussions.

Lush Sweets

As the evening's final act, the desserts arrived and with them, a sense of anticipation. We indulged in the Matcha Basque Cheesecake, its earthy green tones giving way to a creamy heart, each forkful a balance of sweet and subtle bitterness, the pistachio ice cream alongside it a cool, nutty confidant to the rich cake. Then came the Chocolatono, a study in textures, its streusel chocolate base supporting a velvety praline centre, a dish that spoke the secrets of cocoa fields in distant lands, each spoonful a richer chapter than the last. The Coco Meringue was a cloud-like fantasy, a soft bed of sweetness that melted effortlessly on the tongue, the yuzu sorbet cutting through with a citrus-kissed clarity. For those who seek more than a meal, TONO by Akira Back is an unmissable destination. Here, the artistry on your plate rivals the art on the walls, and every service is a performance, delivered with finesse that transcends the ordinary. Head to TONO to be transported, to dine where every bite is part of a grander spectacle, a place that doesn't just feed the body but nourishes the soul. ✤

REACHING CULINARY HEIGHTS

AMS discovered a destination that wove culinary expertise with an arresting panorama of the city at Park Hyatt’s Sora Sky Brunch.

• FOODIE FIESTA

Warmly greeted on our arrival, we were ushered to our table which nestled snugly by the expansive windows, affording us the luxury of a view that seemed to stretch into infinity.

Suspended above us, a canopy of pink glass lighting cast a soft, welcoming glow, reminiscent of the tender hues of a sunset embracing the city skyline. This feature, bold yet elegant, hovered like a modern tapestry of light, adding a gentle luminescence to our gathering.

The restaurant's interior was a wash of purples and mauves cascading across the feature wall, giving a sense of regal sophistication. The gleaming surfaces of the buffet stations reflected a mosaic of colours and the gentle clinking of cookware from the open kitchen provided a rhythmic backdrop to the murmur of convivial conversations, creating an atmosphere that was at once vibrant and soothing.

Starters to Savour

The journey began with the Robata offerings where the beef tenderloin, seared to perfection, whispered tales of smoke and fire with each bite. Alongside, the chicken, bathed in a sticky teriyaki marinade, performed a delicate dance of sweet and savoury flavours that lingered seductively on the tongue.

Adjacent to this, the seafood delights showcased the ocean's bounty. Ceviche sparkled with bright citrus notes that cut through the silky textures of fresh fish, while sashimi slices lay in sublime tenderness, each a silent ode to the sea. Sushi rolls, meticulous in their construction, presented a complex mosaic of taste and tradition. At the salad bar, a range of options spread out before us. However, it was the Caesar Salad that stood out, featuring perfectly crisp lettuce leaves dressed with a creamy dressing and topped with shaved parmesan, refreshing the palate between richer tastes. The bread and cheese selections invited indulgence with the earthy aromas of aged cheeses and the comforting embrace of freshly baked bread.

Beats and Bites

Adding to the vibrancy of the atmosphere, a DJ and saxophonist synergised their talents to fill the air with lively, rhythmic beats and smooth, soulful melodies. Their performances energised the space, weaving a tapestry of sound that brought the dining experience to life.

In between renditions of hit songs, we moved on to the hot starter section, featuring gyoza-style dumplings. A masterful blend of chicken and scallion filled each dumpling, steamed to tender perfection then finished with a light fry on the underbelly, offering a tantalising contrast – the crisp exterior giving way to an explosion of flavour within. Accompanying these, the mixed tempura continued to surprise, with vegetables and shrimp maintaining a perfect balance of crispy exteriors and succulent interiors, providing a delightful textural journey. The dining experience was further elevated by a theatrical touch from the kitchen. The chef personally delivered French oysters to our table, the shells nestled in a bed of dry ice that billowed smoke around them, captivating us with both the visual spectacle and the exquisite freshness.

fact magazine 69 FOODIE FIESTA •

Throughout the feast, the diligent and cheerful staff ensured a seamless dining experience, regularly topping up drinks and swiftly clearing plates with a smile. Their attentiveness added an extra layer of comfort to the brunch.

Signature Servings

Next, it was time to sample the main courses. The brisket, slowcooked to sublime tenderness, was a love letter to the art of patience, carved on request and accompanied by creamy mash and sautéed vegetables that grounded the dish in homely comfort. The sweet and sour chicken dazzled with its vibrant glaze, a lively spectacle of tangy and sweet notes pirouetting on the palate. Meanwhile, the pepper beef, robust and fervent, paired with stir-fried rice, offered a hearty embrace, its spicy notes warming the soul.

Al Fresco Charm

Outside our window, the entertainment extended to a captivating terrace that showcased stunning views of the Corniche. Diners ventured out to take in the breathtaking scenery. The terrace overlooked dhows gently floating in the bay, their sails a picturesque contrast against the turquoise waters. The city skyline rose majestically in the background, set against a clear sky, providing a dynamic and inspiring setting that engaged all the senses.

Sheer Dessert Decadence

The dessert selections provided a gentle descent into sweetness. Baked yoghurt with raspberry crumble juxtaposed cool, creamy textures with tart, crispy crumble, creating a rustic yet sophisticated dialogue of flavours. The crème brûlée, with its hardened caramel top, offered a satisfying crack before yielding to the silky custard beneath, a moment of culinary catharsis.

Chocolate macarons and high-quality chocolate bites closed the evening, their rich velvetyness lingering as a fond farewell, a reminder of the afternoon’s decadent delights.

Reflecting on our experience, it's clear that Sora captures the essence of a modern brunch. There was a harmonious blend of guests – families sharing laughter over shared plates, couples having intimate conversations and individuals of all ages, each finding their own rhythm in the lively, yet never overwhelming, ambience. The attentive service, which flowed as seamlessly as the conversation, allowed us to fully immerse ourselves without a care. What truly set it apart, however, was its ability to allow diners to pause and appreciate the stunning city views. It’s rare to find a place that feels both expansive and intimate, yet Sora managed this with effortless grace. ✤

Cayetana Moret Gual goes on a journey of culinary discovery on a visit to La Mar by Chef Gastón Acurio.

Found within the scenic expanse of the InterContinental Doha Beach & Spa at Katara, La Mar by Chef Gastón Acurio is a beacon of Peruvian culinary excellence. Seated al fresco on a balmy Doha evening, we bask under the twinkling stars, enveloped in the warm embrace of the night.

Eager anticipation fills the air as we prepare to delve into the vibrant tapestry of Peruvian flavours. With Chef Frank Ponce’s expertise as our guide, we eagerly await the symphony of tastes that is about to unfold; a crafted menu with La Mar’s international signature dishes and Doha exclusives.

Peruvian cuisine is a vibrant and diverse culinary tapestry that reflects the country's rich history, multicultural heritage and bountiful natural resources. Chef Frank explains that it is influenced by indigenous traditions as well as Spanish, African, Asian and other immigrant cultures and is celebrated for its bold flavours, innovative techniques and diverse ingredients.

The seating area exudes an aura of casual elegance, with plush furnishings and flickering candlelight casting a mesmerising glow. The gentle hum of conversation mingles with the rhythmic melody of waves, creating a harmonious backdrop for our culinary adventure. La Mar's ambience effortlessly transports us to the bustling streets of Lima, where culinary traditions intertwine with contemporary innovation.

Our culinary journey begins with a tantalising trio of cebiches, each a masterpiece in its own right. The Cebiche Clasico boasts succulent hamour, bathed in a zesty leche de tigre that awakens the palate with its invigorating citrus notes. Meanwhile, the Cebiche Nikkei pays homage to Japanese influences, with tender tuna elevated by a symphony of flavours. As for the Cebiche Limeño, a medley of octopus, shrimp and choclo dances upon the tongue, each bite a celebration of Peru's coastal bounty.

We also savour the velvety allure of tiraditos. The Tiradito Chucuito seduces with plump king scallops ensconced in a creamy embrace topped with squiq ink crackers, while the Tiradito Tuna Dashi entrances with its bold fusion of flavours and light punch of spice. Each morsel is a revelation, a testament to Chef Frank Ponce's culinary prowess.

While both cebiche and tiradito feature raw fish or seafood marinated in citrus juices, they offer distinct culinary experiences in terms of texture, flavour and presentation. Cebiche is known for its chunky texture and bright, refreshing taste, while tiradito offers a more delicate texture and complex flavour profile with a creamy, spicy sauce. Both dishes are emblematic of Peru's rich culinary heritage and are beloved by food enthusiasts the world over.

Our journey continues with a tantalising array of Piqueos Calientes, hot nibbles, each bite a triumph of flavour and texture. From the tantalising crunch of tequeños (rolls) to the savoury embrace of empanadas (half moon-shaped pies), each tells a tale of history. The Tequeño Criollo captivates with its vibrant spices, while the Tequeño of Lomo Saltado offers a tantalising glimpse into Peru's culinary tapestry.

Meanwhile, the Lomo Saltado captivates with its juicy beef tenderloin and aromatic stir-fried vegetables, cooked with soy and oyster sauce, toped with fried egg – a dish that tranports Chef Frank to his childhood, with a hint of nikkei influence.

Saving room for dessert, we indulge in the decadent delights of Peruvian confectionary. The Alfajores are melt-in-your-mouth butter biscuits, ensconced in a luscious dulce de leche, while the Torta De Chocolate seduces with its rich layers of Peruvian cacao-infused decadence. AMS sampled an exquisite Afternoon Tea complete with lush pastries and artisan drinks

• ON THE MENU
at EllaMia.

On entering EllaMia at Mondrian Doha, we were enveloped in an atmosphere that could only be described as whimsically luxurious. The first impression was a blend of contemporary elegance and fantasy. Surreal white tree-like sculptures reached up to the ceiling, their branches cradling oversized, cloud-like forms that seemed to float in the air. The floor, a pristine white, reflected the whimsy above, creating an endless dreamscape.

Surreal Setting

Drenched in natural light, the room was bordered by sheer curtains, softening the outside world into a tranquil backdrop. Grand chandeliers hung with a dignified grace, casting a warm glow that highlighted the modernity of the crisp white decor and the pastel hues that whispered behind the alcoves. The juxtaposition of traditional luxury with modern design elements created a serene ambience – cool, composed, yet brimming with a subtle energy. As we admired the charming interiors, a smiling waitress offered us refreshments, including a delightful iced latte, infused with sweet caramel, and an invigorating glass of iced sparkling water. We noticed a selection of various coffees and teas on offer, each promising its own unique taste, from robust espressos to fragrant leaves.

Savoury Sensations

The indulgence commenced with an exquisitely crafted organic egg sandwich. The eggs, light and delicately seasoned, harboured a creamy core nestled between slices of artisanal bread, soft and yielding to the bite. The Tuna Niçoise sandwich,

a reinvention of the classic, had flakes of tuna twirling with crisp greens and a zesty dressing in a delicate waltz of flavours on our palates. Providing a pause of freshness, the cucumber mint cream sandwich came through like a breath of cool air, with garden-fresh cucumbers and a mint-infused cream spread that whispered of morning freshness and purity.

Continuing our journey, the haloumi and tomato burger was a lively ensemble of chewy, briny cheese and succulent tomato slices, each ingredient singing in a zestful harmony within a perfectly soft bun. The jerk chicken bun was an adventurous melody of spices, a carnival of smoky flavours that emboldened our senses. And the barbecue beef and red croissant was an artistic reimagining, where the tender beef, marinated in a smoky barbecue blend, was tenderly enveloped by flaky, butter-rich pastry, a combination so deeply satisfying it promised to linger in our memories. As we relished each bite, our friendly server, Joses, gracefully detailed each dish, enhancing our appreciation with the stories behind the ingredients and their preparation. Around our table, a delicate scattering of rose petals added a touch of romance to the setting, their subtle fragrance mingling with the aromas of freshly prepared food. Nearby, the joyful echo of a children's party, complete with colourful balloons and laughter, infused the air with a celebratory spirit.

Sweet Surrender

Our unhurried stroll through the array of sweets began with the vanilla cheesecake. Its consistency was as smooth as satin, and the delicate hint of vanilla essence lingered seductively with every forkful. It was a celebration of simplicity, melting effortlessly

on our tongues with a finesse that left us yearning for more. The chocolate cake cup layers were a choreography of textures, from a wafer-thin crust to a mousse-like centre, each stratum promising a deeper descent into the cocoa bean's most intoxicating notes.

Amongst these rich tastes, the Yogurt and Ginger Lollipop emerged as a playful interlude, a delightful zing of ginger cutting through the creamy yoghurt. The Berry Dome was a jubilant celebration of fruit at its peak, the vibrant burst of summer berries encased in a delicate shell, offering a jubilee of sweet and tart notes that sang in harmonious concert with each bite. The raspberry tart was a tribute to the fruit's natural allure, its crisp, buttery base a golden throne upon which rested a crown of ruby-red raspberries, their tart sweetness exalted in a divine communion with the light sugar glaze that glistened atop them. And as if in a final moment of dessert finesse, the chocolate mousse presented itself with the lightness of a cloud at dusk, a delicate poise of chocolate that seemed to vanish like a beautiful dream upon contact. This was closely followed by the Lamington Cake, a nostalgic nod to a cherished classic, with its sponge heart tenderly embraced by a coconut flurry, transporting us to a place where each soft crunch was not just a taste, but a journey to lands of sun, sea and adventure.

The curtain call for this impressive performance was marked by

the arrival of warm, fresh scones. The plain variety spoke softly to our senses, their tenderness and gentle heat enveloping us in homely comfort. Their raisin-laden cousins offered a contrasting experience, with each bite dotted with plump, sweet raisins that added a delightful chew. These scones reached their zenith when adorned with a dollop of fresh cream, rich and sumptuous, and a smear of homemade blueberry jam, its vibrant fruitiness crafted in-house. Together, they formed a triumvirate of textures and sensations – fluffy, juicy and smooth – that brought our afternoon tea to a gratifying and resplendent close.

EllaMia is an enchanting destination, perfect for bringing visiting family to bask in its whimsical charm, celebrating special occasions against its luxurious backdrop or simply unwinding with friends amidst its serene ambience. The diversity of its menu offerings provides ample fodder for conversation, igniting the senses and imagination alike. Whether it’s the heartwarming scones that remind you of home or the adventurous spices that transport you across oceans, EllaMia has a way of marking moments with an indelible grace. ✤

TRAVEL INTENTIONALLY

There are few things as gratifying as travelling to new places and taking the time to truly immerse yourself and experience all the unique aspects they have to offer. But concurrently, far too many of us remain blissfully oblivious to the massive impact the way we travel and our travel choices have on the environment around us.

• TRAVEL
Walking Hanging Bridge, Image by Selina Bubendorfer, Unsplash

Realistically, it falls upon us to understand the overall effects of our travel decisions and then take responsibility towards making necessary changes for the better. For that very reason, a step in the right direction has been the steady growth of sustainable travel (also called eco-tourism).

Simply put, sustainable travel is based around finding ways to carry out tourism for the long-term in a manner that creates minimal negative impact and ideally maximises the positive effects. It aims to strike a balance between satisfying visitors’ needs, while also protecting the interests of the local population and the environment.

Here are a few places that have made focused efforts towards creating a more sustainable travel experience for visitors.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Currently on track to becoming the world’s first carbon-neutral capital by 2025 is the wonderful city of Copenhagen. A contributing factor to that feat is it being one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the world (62% of its residents commute to work and school by bike) thanks to notable investments in cycling infrastructure. Hence, it would be amiss not to hire one and head out exploring, be sure to cycle around the Havneringen (Harbour Ring). Take time to admire magnificent works of art at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek and Statens Museum for Kunst. Then take a walk through Superkilen, an urban park that sprawls through the city’s most culturally diverse neighbourhood, Norrebro. Consider renting a solar-powered boat or join an arranged tour and experience this amazing Scandinavian city by taking in breathtaking sights around the harbour at a leisurely pace. Then get the best view of Copenhagen from the ultra-modern waste-recycling plant, Copenhill, which also boasts an artificial ski slope on the roof along with facilities for hiking as well as a climbing wall.

Costa Rica, Central America

Home to some of the most diverse natural landscapes and flanked by the Caribbean sea and Pacific ocean is the stunningly beautiful Costa Rica. Brimming with lush rain forests, serene beaches, rivers, cloud forests and biodiverse wildlife, this country is an undeniable world-class destination for nature tourism. In order to protect and conserve its resplendent biodiversity, Costa Rica has established numerous national parks, wildlife refuges and other protected areas. Moreover, sustainable travel has long been championed here with high availability of eco-lodges for accommodation even in remote natural areas. Aerial trams or cable cars, known to have minimal environmental impact, offer breathtaking views of the landscape and are found in several locations. Take guided tours to animal sanctuaries (that focus on rescue, rehabilitation and release) and learn about the conservation efforts of each species. Then spend hours relaxing, swimming and sunbathing at the pristine white sand beaches. For those with a penchant for adventure, the waves and surf opportunities here are like no other. For birdwatching enthusiasts, take a trip through the Monteverde Cloud Forest and leave with remarkable photos of the impressive array of bird species.

Reykjavík, Iceland

The stupendous beauty of Iceland’s natural scenery, which includes black sand beaches, glaciers, geothermal areas and much more, is sure to leave you in awe. Additionally, it is also a perfect destination for those that are keen on making responsible travel choices due to government-backed initiatives to protect its environment. Case in point, Iceland takes advantage of its remarkable geography and geology by producing all its electricity from renewable energy sources like hydropower and geothermal energy. Stay in sustainable hotels or eco-campsites during your trip in Reykjavík. Move around using buses (a growing number of which are electric) as well as renting bicycles and electric scooters. Or support a local farm by taking a tour on the back of an Icelandic horse. Then visit the famed Blue Lagoon, nestled within a stunning lava field, and treat yourself to a geothermal spa day. Take a guided walking tour in the city admiring the unique local architecture, landmarks like the iconic Hallgrímskirkja Church, museums and art galleries, then try local Icelandic delicacies. Don’t forget to visit Thingvellir, a famous historic site and national park.

Mallorca, Spain

Offering a variety of attractions for the sustainability focused traveller is Spain’s largest island in the Balearic archipelago – Mallorca. Renowned for its rich cultural heritage and breathtaking natural beauty, the island boasts excellent weather, dense forests, majestic mountains, golden sandy beaches and the Mediterranean Sea. Choose from housing options that implement sustainable practices and integrate different ecological solutions. Then traverse using the comprehensive public services like trains and buses or make use of the ample cycling trails. Take the opportunity for hiking and birdwatching through protected natural reserves like Mondragó Natural Park and the Sierra de Tramuntana Natural Park that serve as havens

for diverse wildlife. Attend organic farming tours that showcase sustainable agriculture experiences, which have become quite famous in Mallorca. Go snorkelling at Cala Llombards or Cala des Moro where the waters are home to spectacularly vibrant coral reefs and seagrass meadows. Hike the numerous trails at the Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site, and enjoy stunning panoramic mountain views. Then taste locally-produced grapes made from sustainably grown fruit at vineyards practicing ecological viticulture. Also, make sure to truly indulge in delicious preparations at local restaurants that use local, fresh and organic produce.

Our world has finite resources and unchecked mass tourism risks causing significant damage to the environment. Sustainable tourism is an optimal and thoughtful way to go about our travel. Therefore, it works in everyone's best interest to support destinations that are committed to eco-friendly tourism practices. ✤

SHORT STORIES

To get the latest on what’s happening on Qatar’s movie scene, we caught up with Mohana Rajakumar, Founder and Director of a unique project, Shorts by Shorties.

What exactly is Shorts by Shorties?

It’s a free film lab for young women based in Qatar between 15 and 23 years old. We are a Community Service Organisation in Doha that teaches teen girls how to make their first short films. We have two annual programmes – a 12-week mentorship lab from September to December for women only, via application and interview, then the 48 Film Challenge that is always the same weekend as International Women's Day, open to all ages and genders. To date we have:

● trained 20+ female filmmakers

● had our films screen at seven international film festivals

● received two honourable mentions

● had films named Best in Category for two awards

● been ‘official’ selections 32 times

Where did the name come from and how was the project first initiated?

Shorts is the nickname for short films and shorty is slang for young women; we started with a community small grant from the US Embassy Doha and have been supported by Chevron as well as other regional entities like Canon Middle East, Msherieb, Doha Design District and Raffles Doha.

fact magazine 96 • ARTS & CULTURE

Can you guide us through the process from walking through the door of the lab to getting a short film made and ready for release?

With the lab, you write a script, get lots of feedback, then cast, put together a crew, film it and hopefully find a good editor to make your idea shine; with lots of enthusiastic friends and family helping you along the way!

Our 12-week mentorship programme admits 10 to 15 Shorties a year. Applicants must pitch with a film idea related to the theme of that session (so far, we have done mental health, family life and narrative medicine). Over the course of the programme they are mentored through the entire process, from writing to filming to editing and submitting their projects to film festivals.

Where are the films screened and can the public see them?

Our projects are submitted for competition at international film festivals and we also hold a few free public screenings a year – you can watch out for invites via our IG account @ shortsbyshorties

I understand your participants have won international prizes, please tell us about that.

Troll is one of our award winners; a film made in our first cohort about bullying and how bullies are made. It won Best Student Director and Best Short at the OTB (Only The Best) film awards. Another award winner is Truth From Lies, about the small untruths we tell in order to fit in, which took Best Student Film at the Hunter Mountain Film Festival.

What would be your message for young women wanting to get involved in filmmaking and how can people take part?

Start however small, with YouTube or IG reels, Facebook stories – however you'd like to tell your POV or an interesting take on a current event. Every year, in conjunction with International Women's day – March 8 – we have a Weekend Film Challenge for all ages and genders. They can learn more here.

Anything else you would like to add?

I started the Film Lab to help support young filmmakers as I learned about film myself; I'm working on my first feature and as I made shorts, I wanted to pass it along as I am a professor of English and teaching is baked into me. ✤

3 Body Problem Shōgun

Need to Know:

3 Body Problem is an American science fiction television series adapted from the first novel in the Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy. When scientists in different parts of the world suddenly begin dying, a group of friends find themselves unexpectedly connected to some of the events. As they attempt to get a grip on things, a detective helps reveal the looming threat to all humanity.

Creators: David Benioff, D. B. Weiss, Alexander Woo Cast: Benedict Wong, Jess Hong, Eiza González, Rosalind Chao, John Bradley, Liam Cunningham, Jovan Adepo, Alex Sharp, Zine Tseng, Jonathan Pryce

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Inspired by the Hugo Award–winning Chinese novel The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin, the show kicks off amidst a cultural revolution taking place in 1960s China.

Ye Wenjie (Zine Tseng) sees her father get humiliated and beaten to death in a struggle session. She’s sent to a labour camp but commits a crime there and is sentenced to die in prison. However, her strong scientific background permits her an opportunity to instead work at a secret military base for all her life. There she makes a decision that reverberates across time and will terribly impact humanity’s future.

In present day UK, everybody’s perplexed since certain modern physics experiments have suddenly stopped working correctly, and then a large number of scientists from around the world are taking their own lives. Nothing makes sense anymore!

An investigator working for the Strategic Intelligence Agency, ends up tracking down a group of friends who are circumstantially caught in the middle of this mess. Together they end up uncovering a connection that’s exceedingly frightening and worrying if true!

The stage is set for an epic drama to unfold that’s reminiscent of the suspenseful brilliance showcased in the early seasons of Game Of Thrones.”

Need to Know:

Shōgun is an historical drama television miniseries based on the 1975 novel of the same name. Set in Japan in the year 1600, a highranking lord finds himself in a predicament when other lords on the Council of Regents unite against him and are determined to eliminate him. But a marooned European ship in a nearby fishing village could end up impacting all plans.

Creators: Rachel Kondo, Justin Marks Cast : Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, Anna Sawai, Tadanobu Asano, Takehiro Hira, Tommy Bastow

Why Is It Worth Watching?

The show’s events, based on James Clavell’s bestselling novel, takes place in Japan in the year 1600, at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. The country is under a feudal system that’s ruled by powerful lords (daimyō) and their loyal samurai, following the death of Japan’s ruler – the Taikō.

A Council of Regents, comprising five warlords, is in place to rule until the Taikō’s young heir comes of age. One of them, Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) finds himself summoned to meeting of the council in Osaka, where he stands accused of covertly expanding his land and keeping the heir’s mother hostage in his castle. The other regents want him dead. Concurrently, a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village and its captain, English sailor John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), presents a curious case which could end up significantly affecting several outcomes that once seemed quite clear. With stunning visuals, an outstanding script and excellent performances all around, the stage is set for an epic drama to unfold that’s reminiscent to the suspenseful brilliance showcased in the early seasons of Game Of Thrones.

ON THE RECORD

COUNTRY, R&B, POP

Cowboy Carter

Stepping into a familiar pair of boots (cowboy ones to be precise) is Houston born-and-raised Beyoncé, presenting an exploration of country music-inspired songs on her eighth studio album, Cowboy Carter. Also referred to as ‘Act II: Cowboy Carter’, the project is the second instalment in a planned trilogy of albums. Though seemingly a country album on the surface, the music delivered here more accurately encompasses a diverse range of musical genres spanning blues, soul, rock and roll, pop, hip hop, R&B, funk and folk.

The opener American Requiiem is a bold country-rock opera that serves as a grand introduction kicking off the project. Next up, the classic Beatles’ track retitled as Blackbiird , takes flight with stunning vocals from Beyoncé that then further soars with gorgeous intricate harmonies and background vocals from upcoming Black country singers, an easy personal favourite! While, 16 Carriages narrates the story of lost innocence and sacrifice as a young performer entering the music business, the smooth and breezy groove on Bodyguard is a fun bop. On the reimagined Dolly Parton classic Jolene, Beyoncé opts for a more confrontational approach. The album offers a lot of great moments with exciting features, stirring storytelling and moving vocals throughout.

ROCK

Only God Was Above Us

American indie rockers, Vampire Weekend, make a triumphant return sounding their creative and quirky best on fifth studio album – Only God Was Above Us Longtime collaborator Ariel Rechtshaid returns on production; with former band member Rostam Batmanglij, a key contributor to the band’s earlier sound, helping with production as well.

Lead singer Ezra Koenig’s voice softly breaks the silence on first track Ice Cream Piano before the production ramps up to a manic splendour halfway through the track. The soothing refrain of “Untrue, unkind and unnatural” sung alongside the deep reverberating upright bass arpeggios on Classical, stay stuck on your mind. The layered metaphors and imagery combine flawlessly with the stuttering drums and stunning production on the choruses of Capricorn

The buoyant vibrancy of the classical piano and the catchy guitar section on Connect and Prep-School Gangsters are notable standouts that are worth the replay. And the instrumentation, especially the harp strings, make Gen-X Cops another superb track.

Only God Was Above Us wonderfully blends elements from previous popular projects and builds upon them with fresh engaging songwriting, catchy melodies and entrancingly impressive arrangements. Definitely worth a listen!

Is it something tourists traipse miles to see? And, if you live nearby, do you sometimes wish the visitors would just stay home?

Well, that’s the case for the residents of the town of Fujikawaguchiko in Japan, who’ve had enough of tourists flocking to their streets to capture picture-perfect views of nearby Mount Fuji. The town saw a surge in visitor numbers after a certain shot of the iconic mountain

went viral but locals accuse the visitors of littering, jaywalking, trespassing on private property and more.

In fact, the town’s residents are so fed up that they’re building a large black screen on the stretch of sidewalk from which the popular view can be photographed apparently springing from the top of a convenience store.

However, since much of the town’s income comes from tourists, this sounds like a case of cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Listen To The Littles Reverse Heist

How often have you allayed your kids’ fears when they’ve claimed there’s a monster in their bedroom. From weird sounds coming from the walls to the ubiquitous beast under the bed, most of us have told our kids not to be silly, that their imagination is running away with them.

But, not so one woman in the US. For eight months, Ashley Massis Class’ young daughter Saylor kept telling everyone there was a monster behind

her wardrobe and eventually, after Ashley gave birth to a new baby and her daughter became more insistent, experts were called in.

Using a thermal camera, the ‘monster’ was revealed to be a 100lb honeycomb and around 50,000 bees!

Young Saylor was happy to say goodbye to her buzzy room mates and we bet Ashley will be taking any future tales of bedroom visitors very seriously.

We’ve all heard tales of thieves making off with paintings worth millions of dollars from museums over the years. Who could forget the Boston heist in which guards admitted two ‘police officers’ responding to a disturbance call who promptly tied up the guards and looted the museum for over an hour.

But museum administrators at Munich's Pinakothek der Moderne faced the opposite problem. They discovered that an employee from the museum’s

technical services team had snuck in after hours and hung one of his own paintings in the modern art collection.

The addition was spotted shortly after opening on the following day but staff decided to leave the picture and take it down after closing that night.

Museum staff didn’t elaborate on the subject matter of the painting but they did say it didn’t receive any positive feedback from gallery visitors. Seize the day, we say.
