“O say can you see by the dawn’s early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.”

DADBEAT

The Magical Mayhem that Comes with the One-to-Two-Kids Transition

remember someone telling me during my wife’s second pregnancy, “going from one to two kids is absolute mayhem” and although I thought I understood what they meant at the time, I really didn’t.

“Isn’t it just double the work?” I remember thinking. Wrong. It’s more like quadruple. Math doesn’t work the same way when multiple kids are involved — one plus one does not equal two; it equals five, most days. Someone always needs something, your patience is constantly being tested and I’ve never been more tired in my entire life.

I thought the new baby was going to be the difficult part (don’t get me wrong, of course babies can be hard!) but for the most part, they just want to sleep and drink milk all day. What I underestimated was the child who could already eat, drink, walk and talk (who was coincidentally on summer break from his four-day-a-week preschool program with no other supplemental program lined up to take its place).

Initially, our biggest concern bringing our secondborn home was how our firstborn would react/assimilate to not having 100% of our attention, 100% of the time. The thought of him feeling replaced or something like that absolutely

So, the wife and I have been “dividing and conquering” — as she says — to make sure both kids get equal attention (although the corny dad in me insists on referring to this as a “man-to-man defense”).

Every morning, our toddler wakes up demanding a new activity or destination like he’s checking them off some list in his head. And every evening, my batteries are drained of every last drop.

But what makes it all worth it and more?

Somewhere during the second pregnancy, instead of focusing on the possibility of our little guy feeling second fiddle to his new baby sister, we started using a little “parenting Jedi mind trick” by constantly reminding him, “did you know you’re going to be THE BEST big brother ever?”

Well, we’re not sure if it was the trick or what, but ever since we brought her home, my son has been obsessed with his baby sister. His face beams in the morning when she first opens her eyes, and watching him hold her fills me with a pride and warmth that I can’t put into words. In these moments, the difficult times become a distant memory.

So yes, I’ll admit that going from one child to two has been a challenging transition. Yes, it’s much more than double the work, but it’s also much more than double the love and opportunities to watch your little people learn and grow together. It might be mayhem, but it’s nothing short of magical

FEEDBACK

Time Passes Much Too Quickly.

Childhood Memory Rewind

“WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER ABOUT YOUR GRANDPARENTS’ HOUSE?”

“Her laugh and the way she said my name with excitement and so much love when I came through the door. I just lost her this past March and I miss her so incredibly much.”

Stephanie Dorris Gatica

“The smell of my grandma’s smothered potatoes and home made biscuits. I miss listening to her talk back to the TV while watching Gun Smoke and Texas Ranger. I miss her so much!”

Lakeia Crump-Mays

“The smell of biscuits and grapefruit, caramels in a jar, roaring fires at Christmas time, the love I felt just pulling into the driveway, the tractor rides around the orchard and my grandmother baking cornbread for me … it was the best place.”

Heather Harper

“The Golden Girls; Dr Quinn Medicine Woman; a quilt in the bedroom in the process of being quilted. Beets cooking outside,

a pressure cooker on the stove. Sunday family supper & she always made a full-course meal and never knew how many people would be there but always had more than enough!”

Lindsey Hughes

“I have so many amazing memories of my grandparents’ house. My grandma watched me the first two years of my life while my mom worked. After that, I spent every second out there that my mom would let me. I have amazing memories of eating cornbread and milk with my poppy and my grandma letting me play dress-up in all her fancy clothes and shoes. I’m thankful to still have my grandma in my life.”

Charisse Harrison LaBoyteaux

“One had doilies on the arms of all the furniture and a bowl of spanish peanuts to eat. The other had a lot of stuff and antique furniture and a lot of people running around, and lots of love

from grandma, and a scary room at the top of the stairs.”

Laura Goode

“Wrapped hard candy.”

Jill Barbin Elya

“Feeling loved.”

Kim Manier

“My favorite memory is of climbing the Mimosa tree in the front yard.”

Ann MJ Rawls

“My grandparents’ house has a distinct smell, laundry detergent, his cologne and her perfume … it still smells that way, has for 40 years. Also, the water from their fridge is the absolute best.”

Laura Christina Thompson

“How warm and inviting it was with smells of homemade bread and sweet desserts! Their house was nothing fancy, but it was so full of love and comfort you wanted to stay forever!”

Jerri Ann Long

“The giant four-post bed in her bedroom. How she let me explore the top drawer in her bedroom filled with so many treasures. The creaking floors and bubble baths.”

Brooke Whitmier

“My grandmother had this little round powder box in the bathroom and when we spent the night and took a bath we got to use it! As a kid I remember it was so cool and I thought it was some special powder till I got older and realized she just put baby powder in it.”

Lisa Williams

“Plastic on the couch. The handcrank washing machine in the kitchen. My grandma’s chewing tobacco spittoon on the front porch.”

To Raise Kids Without Anxiety, You Have to Nix Your Own

It’s no secret that wide-spread anxiety permeates parenting in the age of school shootings ... but it’s devastating for kids, too. National research shows anxiety has increased significantly in children ages 3 - 17 over the last five years. Research also reveals that if a parent has anxiety, their child is seven times more likely to have it, too. This catch-22 is at the heart of local author and therapist Sissy Goff’s new book, The Worry-Free Parent: Living in Confidence So Your Kids Can, Too (Bethany House) coming out next month.

Goff, the Director of Daystar Counseling Ministries, located just three miles from The Covenant School in Nashville, raced to assist families after the school shooting that Monday, March 27. She was also tapped to discuss how parents and kids can navigate forward by CNN; Good Morning America; NBC Nightly News and others in the shooting’s aftermath.

But the only guaranteed two ways to get in remain the same: book a party room or book an overnight SoundWaves Experience Package. Tennessee residents can save up to 35 percent on select dates; residents of Davidson County can save up to 40 percent on select dates. Reserving one of the three SoundWaves Party Rooms may be your most affordable option (online reservations only). Reservations start at $47 plus tax and service charge per person Mon - Thu; $70 on weekends and holidays. The tab includes all park access all day with wristbands for guests, pizza, soda and parking. Kids 3 and younger are free with an adult.

Of course the overnight option rate varies, but the online price for a family of four in one room with SoundWaves wristbands is upwards of $379.

Attractions at SoundWaves include a wave pool with a giant LED movie screen, indoor surfing, a 45-foot slide tower, rapid and lazy rivers, two adults-only pools and 11 water slides. HOLIDAY WORLD & SPLASHIN’ SAFARI

425 E. Christmas Blvd., Santa Claus, IN 812-937-4401 • holidayworld.com

Named among the best theme parks in the country this year by U.S. News & World Report, yet the park retired Raging Rapids this past June after 33 years.

It’s a two-and-a-half hour drive to Santa Claus, Indiana where Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari is located. Pile the kids in the car by 7:30 a.m. to get there by 10. Ride the rides for an hour before Splashin’ Safari opens at 11 a.m. Lots of Nashvillians take this trek annually to spend a soaky day at the popular park.

Several rides at Holiday World are outstanding: the Thunderbird steel roller coaster (launches from zero to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds); the Cheetah Chase water coaster (it will leave you drenched); and Mammoth, the world’s longest water coaster which spans out across 1,763 feet.

Tickets start at $70 for a one-day pass. New this year: the park is offering free admission to 4- and 5-yearold kids for the entire season via a Pre-K Season Pass (online only). Kids 3 and younger already get in free. Also new: the park is cashless with free cash-to-card services throughout the park. The “Holidays in the Sky” drone and fireworks spectacular is ramped up for 2023 with 400 drones (100 more than last season); the light and fireworks show runs nightly through July 30 (weather permitting).

But why did Raging Rapids close? An elusive tweet from the park on June 14 read, “After 33 years and millions of happy memories, Raging Rapids has officially retired. We know this attraction means a lot to our guests, and it does to us, too. While this may feel like an ending, it’s just the beginning. We intend to return the sound of laughter to Boulder Canyon as soon as we possibly can.”

We look forward to that!

THRILLS & CHILLS OF SUMMER

HURRICANE BAY at KENTUCKY KINGDOM

937 Phillips Lane, Louisville, KY 40209 • 502-813-8200

kentuckykingdom.com

Two-and-a-half hours north, Kentucky Kingdom’s Hurricane Bay includes two dozen attractions for families to enjoy.

While Kentucky Kingdom’s main attraction is the theme park with upwards of 70 rides, cooling off means Hurricane Bay. Fun options include the Family Wave Lagoon, Castaway Creek (floating experience) and Wikiwiki Wai (catapult throughwater tubes). Can you handle three seconds of preparation before taking a 12-story drop on Deep Water Dive? What about rafting down Plummet Summit? Little ones may feel more comfortable at Buccaneer Beach, with 10,000 square feet of interactive play elements and slides.

Beginning July 7, visitors can catch the nightly Summer Blast, Kentucky Kingdom’s first-ever fireworks show. And new in Hurricane Bay this season are performances from local musicians at the new Sound Waves Stage.

DOLLYWOOD’S SPLASH COUNTRY

2700 DreamMore Way, Pigeon Forge, TN 37863

1-800-DOLLYWOOD • dollywood.com/waterpark

Three-and-a-half hours east and sprawled across 35 acres, Dollywood’s Splash Country is an ideal destination in the Smokies.

Lots of big waterslides, food, entertainment and cleanliness make Splash Country a super-fun destination for families every summer. Daily operations go through August 6, so July makes for a perfectly timed visit.

New at the park this year are multiple shade structures near the Mountains Waves pool (25,000-square-feet of super splash) so nobody has to stand around in the blazing sun. Sixteen different rides are available for all ages of guests, according to the website. Thrills come from experiences like the TailSpin Racer (a six-lane mat-racer slide); or the Ragin’ River Rapids (which will leave you drenched). RiverRush water coaster includes dramatic drops and lots of sprays. Refreshing (albeit dark!) tube slides make up Wild River Falls, and The Cascades is an 8,000-squarefeet lagoon-style leisure pool. Of course, there’s also Bear Mountain Fire Tower, a multi-level interactive water adventure. And for a little winding down, take a float on the Downbound Float Trip, a relaxing lazy river plus an interactive kid’s play area. Little ones also flock to Little Creek Falls featuring zero-depth entry.

One-day Splash Country tickets are $54.95 for adults, $44.95 for children ages 4 - 9 and $44.95 for seniors ages 62 and older. A Dollywood theme park ticket can be added for $30.05 for adults. Towels are only available for purchase at Splash Country, so be sure to pack yours in addition to sunscreen and water-safe shoes. Good to know: attractions close when cloud-to-ground lightning is indicated within a 10-mile radius and rain checks will be distributed at ticket windows should severe weather shorten your visit.

One-day tickets include entry to Kentucky Kingdom and Hurricane Bay and cost $29.99 - $54.99 plus tax. Child and senior discounts are available. Other ticket options are available online.

Soaky Mountain Water Park is giving Dollywood’s Splash Country a run for its money.

The area’s newest water park — it opened in 2020 — has a total of eight thrill rides plus nine family rides and four just for kids. Outstanding highlights include the Avalaunch watercoaster with high-speed turns and a huge, splashy finish. Black Bear Rapids is an adventure river; the wave pool (Soaky Surge) measures 35,000 square feet. Slippery Salamanders is a water obstacle course for the competitors in your family, and young kids will enjoy smaller versions of adult rides such as Mini Mayhem (smaller version of Blue Mountain Mayhem); and ‘Lil Rattlers, a tube ride for little kids. There’s ample food available in the park, but like the other water parks, bring your own towels and accessories.

HOW COMPARING KIDS IS SO UNHELPFUL, IT’S IN FACT DOWNRIGHT TOXIC

“Why don’t you buckle down like your sister?”

“I wish you would read like your brother does.”

“Jenny’s baby is walking already, why isn’t Asher?”

As a mother of six children, I have found myself comparing one child to another many times. Even though I know their physical, emotional and intellectual development will progress at a rate that is unique to each child and each will have their own strengths and weaknesses, when you are in the middle of a 2-year-old’s tantrum over a seemingly trivial problem, it is hard not to think, “Your sister never did this.”

Parents often battle the urge to compare one child to another. It is a natural reaction considering we use comparisons to make decisions involving nearly every other aspect of our lives. When dealing with two or more children we must do the exact opposite of this natural tendency.

“This was hard for me when my son was younger,” says mom Ashley Clark, who has two kids. “He had several developmental delays and I would struggle with comparing him to where his sister was at that age. I knew it wasn’t healthy for any of us and I had to let it go,” she adds.

Comparing siblings can have negative effects because it can create jealousy, sibling rivalry, feelings of self doubt and have negative effects on the parent-child relationship as a whole. You know each child is unique, with their own gifts, struggles and personality, which all affect how they grow, learn and develop, but how do you learn to appreciate these differences rather than compare them?

Identify Their Strengths

When the urge to compare your children arises, identify the strengths

of each child. One may have an excellent sense of coordination and therefore may excel in physical development and later, in sports. Another child may have no interest in sports but have a knack for listening to others and perceiving how they are feeling. Compassion and caretaking may come natural to a child with these strengths.

Elizabeth DeArmond, a mom of four says, “It helps to see how their differences help all of us as a whole. We balance each other out.”

While taking notes on strengths, acknowledge areas where each child may struggle and allow more patience and instruction in this area without putting the child down for their weaknesses. We are all different and have strengths and struggles, we just need to learn to embrace them for ourselves and our children. As your child grows, learn to keep your expectations in line with their abilities and interests.

Focus on the Child’s Efforts

Instead of comparing one child’s struggles to another child’s successes, try to focus on each individual child’s efforts and improvements.

“I have to remind myself that the kids are all different and continue to train them accordingly,” says Clark.

“Eventually they will mature at their own pace and will ultimately grow into productive independent adults,” says Kelly Lawton, a mother of five.

Things come easily to some people, while others put in lots of hard work to gain the same result. Instead of noting the ease with which one child can accomplish tasks, take note and celebrate the child who is putting in the most effort and congratulate them on any improvements made. “Once I embraced their differences,” says Clark, “I could appreciate where they are as little people.”

Celebrate Individual Milestones

As parents, we all desire to be “fair” to our children. I noticed as my children grew I became so focused on being fair that I was missing the celebration of the individual milestones that were important and meaningful to each child. Being fair is a great goal, but part of that is appreciating each child’s differences rather than comparing them as a group. For instance, when you notice your child has achieved a new accomplishment make sure to share it with the entire family at dinner. It lets them know you pay attention to their individual accomplishments.

No one wants to hear the words, “Why can’t you be more like your sister?” Comparisons feel like judgment to a child. While it goes against our natural instinct, we must learn to see the individuality in our children.

“My twin girls are emotionally different which has led me to parent each one differently,” says Jennifer Kindworth. “The sensitive one needs gentle corrections while the other responds better to timeouts and words of affirmation,” she adds. “When we have the chance, we separate them and go on outings for one on one time. It is amazing how different they are when they are not competing for attention.”

Loving and appreciating your children for their differences doesn’t mean you love one more than the other. It means you have learned to love each one of them for their own unique qualities.

COMPARING SIBLINGS

... breaks trust

Kids long to feel cherished and unconditionally loved. When we compare kids to each other we expose a measuring stick that judges their worth.

... turns friends into rivals

Every time you compare your kids, it’s like firing the start pistol for the race for your approval. You’ll witness an uptick in tattling and put-downs instead of partnership and fun.

... hurts your child’s character

Every time you single out who is the most responsible or funny, attractive or talented, this child will be tempted to look down on the “lesser” siblings.

... creates quitters

Comparing your kids will damage their motivation and confidence to try new things. Every time parents compare their kids, the kids feel pressure to perform. That stress to perform can lead them to quitting.

TO AVOID COMPARING

... focus on your child

Kids don’t all learn how to sit up or walk or talk on the same day. Every child hits milestones at different times and that’s OK.

.. limit your social media

Scrolling on your feed or other people’s feeds leads to toxic comparisons. Avoid that trap with awareness of how it makes you feel.

... celebrate successes

Dial in to what your child can do and celebrate that.

... be kind to yourself and teach your kids to be kind to themselves

Because all of you are enough.

Nashville Children’s Theatre is “Courageously me!” in the 2023/24 Season

Executive Artistic Director Ernie Nolan is proud to announce the 2023/24 season lineup, which is comprised of 6 productions, 5 of which are world premieres for family audiences. “Whether playing on the basketball court or swimming in the deep blue season, our heroes this season celebrate and embrace their unique qualities and personalities. They face the worlds they live in and announce, “I am courageously me!”

Opening August 12, 2023 in the NCT Snuggery, THREE LITTLE KITTENS, created and directed by Nolan, is a detective game with cat-titude. When three little kittens discover they’re missing their mittens, they go on an adventure to find them before Mother Cat finds out. This interactive, immersive spy play takes little ones on a journey that involves meeting neighbors; building unexpected friendships; and like all good adventures, pie. “Nashville Children’s Theatre is one of the only theatres in the US that is dedicated to consistently producing work for the youngest of theatregoers, ages 0-5 years old,” says Nolan. “This makes us not only national leaders in theatre for the very young, but a part of an international conversation as well,” he adds.

The first production in Hill Auditorium is the world premiere of STRONG INSIDE, adapted by Tyrone L. Robinson from the New York Times best selling book by Andrew Maraniss. This portrait of fortitude is the inspirational true story of Nashville native Perry Wallace. Recruited and accepted to Vanderbilt, Wallace makes history as the first African American to play college basketball in the deeply segregated Southeastern Conference. Also directed by Robinson, this homegrown hero’s story plays until September 26, 2023.

Opening in time for the holidays, the world premiere young audiences version of Roald Dahl’s CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, with music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman, and book by David Greig, plays from November 4 to December 17, 2023. Based on the famous novel by Roald Dahl, The world-famous Willy Wonka is opening the gates to his mysterious factory…but only to a lucky few.

Life continues to be sweet at Nashville Children’s Theatre in the new year with THE GINGERBREAD KID, a pop music fairy tale frolic, with music by Jodi Marr and book and lyrics by Abe Reybold. A remix of the traditional story of The Gingerbread Man, NCT’s third world premiere of the season opens January 27, 2024 and runs until February 25. When the magical child of a baking couple accidentally eats all of their parents’ sweets, they run away as fast as they can from facing the consequences. As the race builds, Allspice meets a kooky cast of storybook favorites including Henny Penny and her gang, Little Boy Blue, and Foofinella, of Little Bunny Foo Foo fame. Will Allspice always be on the run? Or will a hungry fox stop them in their sugary tracks?

Following THREE LITTLE KITTENS in the Snuggery, THE FLOPSY BUNNIES: A PETER RABBIT ADVENTURE opens on March 9, 2024 and runs until June 30. In this world premiere, based on a story by Beatrix Potter, the Flopsy Bunnies have disappeared! But have no fear, Mama Bunny is in pursuit.

Finishing the season from April 6 to May 19, 2024 in Hill Auditorium is the TYA world premiere of Disney’s FINDING NEMO, music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez (FROZEN) and book adapted by Lindsay Anderson. The beloved 2003 Pixar movie, Finding Nemo, comes to life on stage, with new music by award-winning songwriting team Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez (FROZEN). Marlin, an anxious and over-protective clownfish, lives in the Great Barrier Reef with his kid Nemo, who longs to explore the world beyond their anemone home. But when Nemo is captured and taken to Sydney, Marlin faces his fears and sets off on an epic adventure across the ocean.

2023/24 School field trip reservations and season memberships are available now. Single tickets go on sale July 1.

PRIVATE SCHOOL

Currey Ingram Academy

Currey Ingram Academy was founded as Westminster School of Nashville in 1968 by Carol and Bobby Henderson. Their son, Britt, was not succeeding in his school, and Carol and Bobby felt they had exhausted all options for educating him. Administrators, educators, parents and community leaders came together to develop an innovative learning program and started Westminster School of Nashville. Thanks to a gift from Stephanie Currey Ingram and John Rivers Ingram, the school moved to its current campus and became Currey Ingram Academy in 2002. Over the course of more than 50 years, hundreds of students have been able to learn in an environment that promotes their strengths and supports their differences. Our mission is to provide an exemplary PreK-12 day school program and boarding school program for grades 9-12 that empowers students with learning differences to achieve their fullest potential. We settle for nothing less than being a premier educational environment for students with language-based learning challenges, dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, ADHD, executive functioning and processing deficits, mild anxiety disorders, high-functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and more.

6544 Murray Lane, Brentwood 615-507-3242

Students are set up to thrive because of Currey Ingram’s focus on individualized attention. In fact, the average student-teacher ratio is 4.5:1 school-wide. With evidence-based instruction, Individualized Learning Plans (ILP) and occupational therapists

and speech-language pathologists on-staff, we provide the tools necessary to support each student’s needs.

Outside of our educational program, students enjoy no-cut arts, athletics and extracurricular activities. Currey Ingram’s campus includes features such as music, theater and art studios, a professional sound recording studio, five tennis courts, forest trails and a creek. Whatever the student’s passion, they are able to pursue it at Currey Ingram.

The 83-acre campus is located in an idyllic, pastoral area of Brentwood. The campus is just 11 miles from downtown Nashville and eight miles from the Franklin/Cool Springs area. Over the years, families from 33 states and nine countries have cited the school as a major factor in moving to the Nashville area.

Our campus also includes a childcare program for infants through Pre-K; a college counseling center; a Diagnostic Center, open to Currey Ingram students and the public for psychoeducational evaluations and consultations; and so much more.

With tuition assistance available and rolling admission, it is never too late to start learning at Currey Ingram Academy!

Balance Learning and Fun

Every year at Lindamood-Bell, we help individuals of all ages catch up or get ahead in reading and comprehension. Our instruction is proven effective for students with challenges that affect learning, including dyslexia, autism, and ADHD.

Difficulty with Comprehension

Many students who can decode well and understand words still have weak comprehension. What is the missing piece for these students?

They may have a learning weakness that prevents them from comprehending the language they read and hear. They might get parts or some details but have difficulty remembering a whole book or story. Directions from parents and teachers go in one ear and out the other without a connection.

What’s the Cause?

Problems with reading comprehension may be due to weak concept imagery—the ability to create an imaged whole from oral and written language. This weakness causes individuals to get only “parts” of information they read or hear and can often undermine the reading and thinking process.

The Visualizing and Verbalizing® program, authored by Lindamood-Bell co-founder Nanci Bell, develops concept imagery as a basis for comprehension and higher-order thinking. The development of concept imagery improves reading and listening comprehension, memory, oral vocabulary, critical thinking, and writing.

Challenged By Reading

When a student struggles with reading or is diagnosed with dyslexia, extra help often focuses on phonics and spelling rules. They may sound out a word—but it is slow and labored.

nashville.center@lindamoodbell.com

Or, they may substitute words when reading a paragraph and have difficulty reading fluently. These students may spell words phonetically but cannot remember the visual patterns of words (orthography).

What is the missing connection for these students?

An essential component of reading and spelling is symbol imagery, which underlies both phonological and orthographic processing. Symbol imagery—the ability to visualize the sounds and letters in words—is necessary for sounding out new words and quickly recognizing letters and common words. Students who read fluently, and can self-correct their errors, have strong symbol imagery.

The Seeing Stars® program, also authored by Lindamood-Bell co-founder Nanci Bell, develops symbol imagery as a basis for orthographic awareness, phonemic awareness, word attack, word recognition, spelling, and contextual reading fluency.

Evidence-Based

The Seeing Stars and Visualizing and Verbalizing programs are evidence-based. For information about recent peerreviewed research studies involving Lindamood-Bell, visit www. lindamoodbell.com/research.

Coding & STEM

Celebrating Our Grand Opening!

Skill Samurai is excited to announce the opening of their new location in Franklin. Skill Samurai-Franklin provides comprehensive STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) enrichment education programs for children ages 5-18. It offers fun and engaging classes in coding, math, and other STEMrelated subjects to help kids develop critical thinking, problemsolving, and collaboration skills that prepare them for future success. The classes are taught by experienced coaches who are passionate about STEM education and dedicated to helping kids reach their full potential.

Founded in May 2015 by Jeff Hughes, Skill Samurai is an innovative and non-traditional approach to children’s programs. The company started with just one location in New Brunswick and has since expanded globally with locations across Canada, the United States, Asia, Australia, and Latin America.

Skill Samurai plans to open 30 locations per year, moving forward in the coming years.

“We’re thrilled to be opening our latest location in Franklin and bringing our unique approach to STEM education to the community,” said Skill Samurai founder, Jeff Hughes. “Our program is designed to be fun and engaging for kids, while also providing them with valuable skills that help them succeed in the future.”

Coding Mastery

Skill Samurai offers multiple pathways. Our Way of the Hero offers a clear progression based on each coder’s age, experience, and interests. Our goal is mastery of coding skills.

Students can switch between pathways when they complete a course, e.g. moving from Minecraft modding to Python.

Each pathway offers one or more courses at each of the three levels - Beginner, Intermediate & Advanced.

With each level, students gain proficiency in more advanced programming concepts and learn how to design and build more complex projects. Levels are taught in age and experienceappropriate development environments, from Scratch to professional languages, such as Python or Java.

In every class, your child will practice their coding ability, along with various STEM activities and games that enhance their knowledge in a fun and rewarding way. If you’re an advocate for your child to become a builder of the future, this is the best program to enroll them in.

The Way of the Hero is only available through our monthly memberships.

At Skill Samurai we believe children should have access to a fun, inspiring curriculum that prepares them for the best future imaginable.

PEDIATRIC DENTIST

At Snodgrass-King Dental Associates, it is our belief that a healthy and beautiful smile will be the foundation of a child’s future. Our pediatric dental specialists are committed to delivering the optimum in dental care. You choose us because you want the best for your children, and so do we. It is our goal to provide this in a relaxing and fun-filled environment. At Snodgrass-King, we know the impact that your smile has on your health, self-esteem, and the way others view you. It is our mission to insure every patient has a smile to build a future on.

Did you know it’s recommended that children have their first dental examination when they begin to teethe and their first tooth erupts? The first dental visit should occur shortly after the first tooth erupts and no later than the child’s first birthday. Beginning tooth and mouth examinations early may lead to detection of early stages of tooth decay that can be easily treated. At the first visit we will present if your child is over the age of four, we start with brushing and flossing instructions. With the parent accompanying the patient, we will go over the most effective way to excel in oral hygiene. We will then proceed to take both cavity detecting and growth development x-rays if they are needed. After the hygienist thoroughly cleans your son or daughter’s teeth, you will be present while the dentist

does his/her examination. This will enable you to meet the dentist, get first-hand knowledge of your child’s progress and ask any questions that you may have. The process is very similar to your own experience at the dentist, with the exception of a more kid-friendly environment. If the patient is under the age of four, the process is a little different. You are welcome to join your child in a room more suitable for babies and toddlers. They, as any of our patients, will be able to watch cartoons or movies during their cleaning. For our younger patients, an extensive toothbrush prophy (cleaning) is done. We will use polishing paste and a toothbrush to effectively treat your child’s teeth. As recommended by the American Dental Association a topical fluoride application will be administered to help prevent decay and promote strong teeth. The dentist will then do an exam and will help you access your child’s overall oral hygiene.

Southern Stars Preschool is part of the STARS Montessori & Educational Group which has been successfully nurturing young minds since 2003.

Southern Stars Preschool, which opened in the fall of 2020, is distinct in being a professionally operated preschool with an eye to individualized attention. The “every child is the same” technique does not apply within our walls. We pride ourselves on our ability to adapt to changing times, and it shows in how teachers and staff respond to parents and children. Every child is a learner unto himself and our teachers are confident in their ability to engage each child successfully.

STARS Montessori & Educational Group has over 20 years of experience with three locations (Washington DC, Alexandria VA, Nashville TN), multiple Montessori certified teachers who oversee our curriculum, and plan and train our classroom teachers for daily instruction. At Southern Stars Preschool, we have an established curriculum that not only focuses on the academic but also focuses on the individual child and their needs, as well as in cooperative and group play. Our curriculum reinforces that everything is related, showing the connection of topics across the five learning areas: Language Arts, Mathematics, Practical Life, Sensorial, and Geography/Culture. Our curriculum is available in book form for all parents, so they may follow along with our daily activities.

At Southern Stars Preschool our Montessori and STEM teaching styles are based on the concept of child-led exploration which includes, question-based and hands-on learning, critical thinking, open-ended exploration, and applying self-initiative. Our teachers provide guidance to each child that invites the type of programming STEM is known for: Opportunities for hands-on discovery, learning through experimentation, allowing for students to explore areas that draw their interest, bringing concepts together to create a more holistic academic experience, and development of practical, and real-world skills that move beyond rote learning.

We offer many daily activities that tie in directly to learning in the areas of science, technology, engineering, math, and the arts. Some learning activities the children may enjoy can include:

• Planting a seed and observing its growth from seed, to sprout, to leaves and flowers

• Creating and observing rain gauges to learn about natural processes such as evaporation

• Blowing bubbles and watching how they respond to different environmental elements, such as breezes and different surface materials the bubbles may touch

• Learning about the design of things by playing with materials designed to nest into one another or connect with one another in a clear pattern

• Categorizing objects into groups that share the same trait (size, shape, color) With 20 years of educational experience, Southern Stars offers the most flexible preschool options to build your personalized preschool package to meet your family’s needs:

RiverGate Mall is your one-stop destination for all your fashion needs. Everything you need for your family, from children’s clothing to shoes for back-to-school to that special outfit and accessory for a night on the town, can be found at our wide variety of fine merchants. While you are here, dine at the RiverGate Mall food court and savor the array of tasty options. Parking is easy and it’s never raining or too hot or too cold inside the mall.

Anchored by Dillard’s and JCPenney, RiverGate Mall was founded in 1971 to serve northern Middle Tennessee. Many of our longtime guests and neighbors tell us they have fond memories of “cruising” the mall when that was in fashion, and we are proud to have the world’s first Underground by Journeys store as one of our fine merchants. Last year, we celebrated our fiftieth anniversary and look forward to the next fifty years. With over 1.1 million square feet of shopping, RiverGate Mall is professionally managed by Atlanta-based Hendon Property Management LLC and has 24/7 security for your shopping comfort. It’s interesting to note that RiverGate Mall is actually in two cities, as the city limit lines of Goodlettsville and Nashville run right through the center of the mall. We are conveniently located just of I-65 at the Rivergate Parkway exit #96. Mall hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Friday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 6 p.m.

615-859-3458

RiverGate Mall has always enjoyed hosting a variety of community events and will continue to do so. Event times can be found on our website www.rivergate-mall.com and are regularly posted on Facebook and Instagram.

Valentine’s Day is always a special day to come and shop for that sparkly keepsake for the special person in your life. The Easter Bunny always makes an appearance and has a huge age-segmented Easter egg hunt along with photos with the Bunny himself. In the late summer, we host a Back-to-School event where over five hundred book bags filled with school supplies are given to children as you shop for those essentials for your growing children. A community favorite for parents and kids alike is RiverGate Mall’s annual Touch-A-Truck event, where kids get a rare opportunity to climb in big trucks, law enforcement vehicles, and, if the weather cooperates, a police helicopter. Of course, we always celebrate Mother’s Day and Father’s Day with those special gifts for your mom and dad. And no year would be complete without a visit from Santa Claus who comes and stays at the mall throughout the Holidays for that special visit, maybe a letter of gift wishes and a picture with jolly ole St. Nick himself.

A MOM REPORTER OUTING

Nashville Shores Exceeds Expectations

Take a Dip in the "Shores" of Nashville.

Iguess when I think about an amusement park 15 minutes outside of a major city not known for amusement parks, I picture it a bit trashy (just being truthful). However, Nashville Shores exceeded my familyof-seven’s expectations! This water park is set on Percy Priest Lake and it is not just waterslides, but a whole water adventure (with rentals available on the lake!).

The park is clean and well updated with a variety of rides for all ages. My teens and tweens went off on their own to ride all the big slides, while my 5 and 7-year-old stuck to the lazy river, wave pool and two large kiddie areas (they appreciated having not just one, but two to choose from)!

Overall, the kids’ favorite part was the lake water adventure. You have to fill out a waiver, but it is free with park entrance (my kids went through the course a couple of times). You can also rent jet, skis, pontoon boats or go tubing on the lake.

We love the ride, “The Scream.” It’s big, yellow and open — think rollercoaster drop meets a giant skateboarding half pipe! And yes, I screamed. The park also has a brand new slide for families — the Riptide Racer. Visitors speed headfirst down the slide on a single mat to race their family and friends through a twisting and turning, side-by-side course.

We also loved the big group ride (you have to love a water ride that goes completely dark so you don’t know which way your raft will flow. Very thrilling!).

What seems very cool is the camping at the adjacent Lakeside resort. They have RV spots, cabins, tent sites, etc. I saw some parents walk their teens to the park then they (the parents) returned to their camp.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Admission prices drop at 4 p.m. so, if you can wait, your wallet will thank you. Keep in mind, there’s no outside food or beverage allowed (unless there

are dietary restrictions). Also, the park blasts music from different decades going back to the 70’s throughout the park.

We saw families of all ages enjoying the park, I’m guessing many of them with a season pass (which pays for itself in two trips). Prices of admission are:

• General admission over 48” - $49.99

• Junior admission under 48”- $34.99

• Military (must present valid ID) - $34.99

• Senior admission 62 and older - $34.99

• After 4 p.m. admission- $29.99

• Season Pass- $69.99

Overall, what a great summer day for our family! Go take a dip!
