Southern Stars Preschool is part of the STARS Montessori & Educational Group which has been successfully nurturing young minds since 2003.

Southern Stars Preschool, which opened in the fall of 2020, is distinct in being a professionally operated preschool with an eye to individualized attention. The “every child is the same” technique does not apply within our walls. We pride ourselves on our ability to adapt to changing times, and it shows in how teachers and staff respond to parents and children. Every child is a learner unto himself and our teachers are confident in their ability to engage each child successfully.

STARS Montessori & Educational Group has over 20 years of experience with three locations (Washington DC, Alexandria VA, Nashville TN), multiple Montessori certified teachers who oversee our curriculum, and plan and train our classroom teachers for daily instruction. At Southern Stars Preschool, we have an established curriculum that not only focuses on the academic but also focuses on the individual child and their needs, as well as in cooperative and group play. Our curriculum reinforces that everything is related, showing the connection of topics across the five learning areas: Language Arts, Mathematics, Practical Life, Sensorial, and Geography/Culture. Our curriculum is available in book form for all parents, so they may follow along with our daily activities.

At Southern Stars Preschool our Montessori and STEM teaching styles are based on the concept of child-led exploration which includes, question-based and hands-on learning, critical thinking, open-ended exploration, and applying self-initiative. Our teachers provide guidance to each child that invites the type of programming STEM is known for: Opportunities for hands-on discovery, learning through experimentation, allowing for students to explore areas that draw their interest, bringing concepts together to create a more holistic academic experience, and development of practical, and real-world skills that move beyond rote learning.

We offer many daily activities that tie in directly to learning in the areas of science, technology, engineering, math, and the arts. Some learning activities the children may enjoy can include:

• Planting a seed and observing its growth from seed, to sprout, to leaves and flowers

• Creating and observing rain gauges to learn about natural processes such as evaporation

• Blowing bubbles and watching how they respond to different environmental elements, such as breezes and different surface materials the bubbles may touch

• Learning about the design of things by playing with materials designed to nest into one another or connect with one another in a clear pattern

• Categorizing objects into groups that share the same trait (size, shape, color) With 20 years of educational experience, Southern Stars offers the most flexible preschool options to build your personalized preschool package to meet your family’s needs:

• 2, 3, or 5 days per week

• traditional school day or extended day schedules

• meal plan choices

• drop-in care

• drop-in extended care

• afternoon playtime only

Our STARS Education staff are committed to delivering a professional and nurturing environment for our families. You choose us because you want the best for your children, and so do we. We use the Kriyo app in order to keep parents up to date with daily activities, and easy communication between teachers and parents. We also have a Facebook and Instagram page that has daily activities for STEM and Montessori work at home. Our schools have a dedicated phone line for parents to speak directly to the director and teachers when a need arises.
