What

is

the

distinction

between

worldly

comfort and the comfort that the Bible is promising? Though there is joy and comfort in the worldly life but it is not the absence of suffering. Heaven is the only place we will have whole comfort and joy. A heavenly comfort is what God has promised for every child of God. in christian life there is hope, joy and peace in Christ. We have been comforted by the hope we have in Christ. God is the source of our comfort and hence it is eternal. Therefore, he has given us the Holy Spirit as our comforter. God

is

the

father

of

mercies

and

tender

hearted. Thus according to His longsuffering and everlasting mercy He comforts us. He showers mercies in abundance even in the midst of suffering and pain in this world. This is more wonderful than the temporary worldly comfort. As you read this edition on the theme “Spirit of Comfort'' May the good Lord make you a channel of comfort.

One

rainy day, He came

to the class in a wet condition since he did not have the money to buy an umbrella. Fearing the teacher's wrath, he snuck out of the classroom. When the teacher saw this, she called out to him, "'Come, Emperor Alexander the Great, come in.'" "Is the teacher making fun of me?" he doubted. No, not mocking. The teacher has prepared a play about Emperor Alexander. She finalized all the other characters in the play except Alexander. The teacher noticed the gleam in his squinting eyes. "He is the hero," she decided. That single word brought a poor boy, who had received no consideration, to the pinnacle of selfconfidence. The seeds of art quickly spread within him. He is now a wellknown writer and artist.

This is a life story published in a prominent magazine. A small word of comfort or appreciation is enough for anyone to touch the sky of confidence. We all anxiously seek a modest word of comfort from those in our inner circle when we are feeling down or upset about our life experiences, or struggle to go on. Everyone is eager to have a comforting hand when they are alone. However, there will surely be times in our lives when we feel as though nobody can possibly understand us. These are the times when we may be surrounded by people who care for us, yet feel completely alone. Some people will give up their precious life and some will live their whole life in depression. Everybody who reads the Bible will be familiar with the name Hannah, who is mentioned in the Book of Samuel. Elkanah had two wives Peninnah and Hannah. Hannah was adored by her husband, but she was infertile. However, Hannah was teased by Peninnah, who had children. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the Lord, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat. Her husband Elkanah would say to her, “Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don’t you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?” Instead of blaming his wife, he loved her more than anyone in the world and always pacified her.

11

kingdom Perspectives I www.kpm.org.uk

Every woman dreams of having such a kindhearted husband! But for Hannah that was not enough. Every day, she visited the Lord's house and prayed. She said to Eli, the priest, “I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the Lord." Can we pour out our soul to the Lord? Can we hand over our problems to the Lord? "Then she went her way and ate something, and her face was no longer downcast," the Bible says about Hannah again. The best solace we may receive from the Lord's house is this. No man can comfort us more than Jesus in a better way and solve our problems. When life goes topsy- turvy and everything that seemed stable is also shaken, we can run to God, because he remains completely stable. God has given a truly mind blowing assurance through his words "“I, even I, am he who comforts you. Who are you that you fear mere mortals, human beings who are but grass,..." (Isaiah 51:12). You might seek solace from your parents, siblings, or closest friends while you're in distress. But only God can take away our sadness and give us the strength to overcome any circumstance, no matter how daunting or overwhelming. We are living in a hectic world. Everybody is running to be successful in their life. Our closest friends or siblings, on whom we rely most, can abandon us due to their obligations of life. But God is always with us. God's love will tenderly nurture us as a mother nurtures a child. God's comfort is renewed repeatedly. God knows you better than you know yourself.

You may be reading this article, while carrying some burden or problems on your shoulders. If you try to walk a long way carrying a burden, you will be tired and you may not be able to take a single step forward. On the other hand, If you are ready to put all your anxieties and worries upon Jesus, you can feel the peace in your soul, spirit and body. Stop holding onto what is hurting you. Leave all that gives you a burden into the hand of God Who has promised to take care of you. Receive everlasting comfort from Jesus that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which God comforts us. May this lyric from the famous song "In Christ Alone" calm your mind. Blessings! "In Christ alone my hope is found He is my light, my strength, my song This cornerstone, this solid ground Firm through the fiercest drought and storm What heights of love, what depths of peace When fears are stilled, when strivings cease My comforter, my all in all Here in the love of Christ I stand."

SECRET OF SUPERNATURAL POWER

Many fall into the trap of loneliness

situations

don't

In

hope. There is a God who comforts us in a peculiar manner, you can feel him standing talking

with

you

to

and

you

with

comforting words. You may not be seeing God since He is a Spirit. However, He is a Spirit that comforts us, He is called the Holy Spirit. Jesus promised another advocate, His

Holy

Spirit

to

every

individual who believes in Him. Hence, Jesus said “If you

love

me,

And I will ask

the Father, and he will give you

another

to

help you and be with you forever- the Spirit of truth. The

him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you” (John 14.15-17). 3 16

kingdom Perspectives I www.kpm.org.uk

A child of God who doesn't have a constant relationship with the Holy Spirit will be lost in the world. On the other hand, if you are good in connecting yourself with him and if you are sensitive to everything the Holy Spirit is talking to you surely you will lead a purpose driven life. Moreover, God has called his children to lead an extraordinary supernatural life. Do you think you can lead such a beautiful life without the help of the Holy Spirit? Disciples of Jesus have wrestled in between life and death while testifying Jesus to the world. But at the end of every struggle neither do they fail nor do they fall short of anything. Rather, they were victorious to build many from falling and giving life to those who were spiritually and physically dead. The secret of the disciples' life was that they had the all-surpassing power from God. Further, they always carried the death of Jesus Christ in their body so that the life of Jesus was revealed in their body. “But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this allsurpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body (2 Corinthians 4.7-9).

3 17

kingdom Perspectives I www.kpm.org.uk

Who enabled them to be a source of comfort for many while going through such difficulties? The Holy Spirit. If you are able to trust in him, the spirit of God will comfort and strengthen you. The Bible says God comforts us in order that we can comfort many. The more you comfort others the more of the spirit of comfort will be poured on you. Hence, we read in the Bible “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and

the

God

of

all

comfort,

who

comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God” (2 Corinthians 1.3-4). God has proposed a meaningful life for you. You shall

be

a

channel

of

blessing

to

comfort many who are in trouble and difficulty.

3 18

kingdom Perspectives I www.kpm.org.uk

Jesus moved with the same spirit of comfort. He strengthened many lives. In one instance in one of his friend's home a brother named Lazarus was sick and died. Jesus sent comforting words to the family and said, “...This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days, and then he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea” (John 11.4-7). Jesus resurrected Lazarus from the dead and gave him back to his sisters. Similarly, the disciples of Jesus raised many from the dead by the spirit of God. The same God will do great, marvellous and mighty things in and through our lives when the spirit of God starts working in our earthen vessels. May God enable you to lean on to the

comforter

and

get

comforted

in

every

circumstance in life and may you become an instrument of comfort to reach many lives. Many Blessings!

PARAKLÉSIS- THE SPIRIT OF COMFORT

Paraklésis means “a calling to one’s side” “beside,” “to call.” Paraklésis is seen 3874 times in the New Testament either interpreted as an exhortation, or consolation. The word paraklétos derived from the verb parakaled, literally means ‘to call beside,’ More such usages can be found in the Johannine writings. It has been interpreted both actively and passively; actively means the ‘comforter, the one who stands by and exhorts or encourages. Passively means an ‘advocate;’ the one who is called to stand by someone, particularly in a law-court. The word Parakaleé is frequently used in the New Testament to mean ‘exhort,’ 'encourage.’ (1 John. 2:1). The word paraklésis means the ‘exhortation’ or ‘encouragement’ of the Holy Spirit. In the Old Testament, a unique word necham is used to describe comfort or consolidation. The book of Nehemiah is a masculine name of Hebrew origin meaning God comforts. that appears 5162 times in the Old Testament God’s Word defines the Comforter as “the Holy Ghost,” a person of the Godhead, who will enable us to walk comforted in His strength. A strength from God’s Word. Jesus is promising a comforter after conducting His earthly ministry. Jesus was present bodily to His disciples

in

his

first

advant.

When

His

time

of

ascension

was

approaching, He was training them for His absence. He was assuring them that they will not be totally alone. He would ask His Father to send “another Comforter” (John 14:14). This Person, “the Spirit of truth,” would “dwell with them, and would be in them (John 14. 17). The same Spirit of Christ dwells in us and He is our comforter, He will never leave you comfortless. blessings!
