The secret of joy for a Christian is to be content in all situations whether it is in full or in want. We need to dream for the best to achieve in life, at the same time we must desire to be happy and content in all that God has given us. In Philipian 4.13-14 the Apostle Paul says “I can do all things [which He has called me to do] through Him who strengthens and empowers me [to fulfill His purpose—I

am

self-sufficient

in

Christ’s

sufficiency; I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him who infuses me with inner strength and confident peace. Nevertheless, it was right of you to share [with me] in my difficulties.” Paul was most content when he enjoyed plenty of things in life as well as in times when he was in need of

things.

Therefore,

the

secret

weapon

towards contentment is leaning on to Christ and His power. Rely on God’s promises in Christ and He strengthens us to be content. As you flip through the pages you will learn more about leading a contentful life that is

full of joy and peace while being in a world that calls for the passing pleasures.

WE HAVE A RICH GOD

11

kingdom Perspectives I wwwkpm.org.uk

T

he Bible Says ‘’And my God will

meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus’’PHILIPPIANS 4:19 The gospel talks about blessings in many books, chapters, verses, through different characters and parables. So, we all know that blessings are something that we receive with favour, out of mercy or compassion from God and that would bring in lots of happiness in our lives. Now these blessing we receive could be materialistic or spiritual.

12

kingdom Perspectives I wwwkpm.org.uk

Materialistic Blessings DEUTERONOMY 7:13- ‘’He will love you, bless you, and multiply you. He will also bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, your grain and your wine and your oil, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock, in the land that he swore to your fathers to give you.’’ The blessings that we as well as others could see in our life -our family, our health, joy, job, success and prosperity we have in our life are the materialistic blessings God gives in our lives. Spiritual Blessings EPHESIANS 1:3-5- ‘’3. Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.4. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5. he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will- ‘’ Now remember to be chosen by God, being reborn, baptised, receiving holy spirit and experiencing the joy of being in Christ every day are the spiritual blessings that as Christians or followers of Christ we have in our lives. But sadly, today most of us often consider only the materialistic things as blessings and seem to unsee the spiritual blessings we have in our lives. Now because we consider blessings just to be materialistic, we are often not content with what we have and keep asking more claiming that our God is a rich God. LUKE 12:30-31 “For the pagan world runs after all such things and your Father knows that you need them. But seek his kingdom, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

13

kingdom Perspectives I wwwkpm.org.uk

Why are we not content? Comparison We are often in the habit of comparing ourselves with others; others’ successes, others’ wealth, others’ happiness and end up not being satisfied with the good things we have in our life. Let us have a look into the verse from the book of JAMES 1:17 - “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of Heavenly lights who does not change like shifting shadows.”

Greed It’s a very common human nature that the more we receive the more we ask for it, simply can be defined

Lose our Focus Not being happy with what we have or what God has given us often shows that we are more focused on worldly matters which in fact doesn’t last long. It also proves that we have lost our insight on spiritual aspects that we are in real appointed for. Remember the Bible says in the book of MATTHEW 5:6- “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.”

the worldly pleasures. We should remember that we were like a lost sheep once and God our heavenly father bought us and saved us at a very high price, ‘The Blood of Christ’. Forget our identity

as greed which is also a main cause for dissatisfaction. So whenever we have such thoughts let us keep in mind what the Bible says in LUKE 12:15- ‘Then He said to them, ‘Watch

out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.’ What happens when we don’t find contentment? Lost Remember God gives everyone Constantly thinking about the according to their needs and He possessions and materialistic things always knows what is best for us. shows that we have lost ourselves in

We are called as Children of God and what God wants from his children is to find happiness in him, trust him and to rejoice in the Lord always.

14

kingdom Perspectives I wwwkpm.org.uk

But our unsatisfied and unhappy heart shows that we have forgotten our identity, or we forgot who we should be in reality. Commit Sins The Bible says in the Book of Ephesians 5:5- For of this you can be sure, no immoral, impure or greedy person- such a man is an idolater- has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. So let us always be mindful that whenever the greed of money and possessions comes within, we are committing a sin. Separation from God This is a very simple yet very important thing that every Christians must know and should always remember that every sort of sin separates us from the love of God. How to express contentment. Showing Gratitude 1 THESSALONIANS 5:18- Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. Always be thankful to God, for this also proves our love towards our Heavenly Father. Being thankful is not just an expression of contentment but remember when we do this, we are also doing the will of God. Growing more in Christ COLOSSIANS 2:6-7 – 6.So then, as you received Christ Jesus as Lord , continue to live in him,7.rooted and built up in him, strengthened in faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

15

kingdom Perspectives I wwwkpm.org.uk

Our eagerness to grow more in Christ our Lord shows our contentment of living with Christ every day. Preparing ourselves for the kingdom of God The Bible says in the Book of Matthew that the day of the Lord’s second coming is unknown and that He would come at an unexpected hour so let us prepare ourselves for the great day of triumph. Finally, let's do this, let us try asking this question to ourselves: ‘‘Is God content with my life?’’ My dear brothers and sisters, our God is a rich God, he is rich in love, compassion, he does not count our transgressions and he understands that we are just a mere dust. So always keep in mind that everything we have in our life is beyond what we truly deserve to have and be thankful to God for everything. 1TIMOTHY 6:6-7 “6.But godliness with contentment is great gain.7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.”

CONTENTMENT -AUTARTEIA The term contentment is defined as, the State of being free from cares becomes a satisfaction with what is already one’s own, a disposition of mind undisturbed by anxiety or envy. The Greek term autarteia, means sufficiency or to be sufficient, is seen 174 times in the New Testament. It is not a passive acceptance of the status quo, but the positive assurance that God has supplied one’s needs, and the consequent release from unnecessary desires. A Christian can be self-contained because he has been satisfied by the grace of God (2Cor 12:9). In the Old Testament The Hebrew term Yaal or “be content” indicates pleasure or willingness to do a certain action, usually on which has been requested by another person. The Christian spirit of contentment follows

the

fundamental

commandment

of

Exo.20:17

against

covetousness. Not everyone is truly content with his or her life. Oftentimes we are unsatisfied and seek more for what we don't have and who we are. Through scripture however, we are commanded to be content with all we have in life. Use these Bible verses to remind you not of what you don't have and who you are not, but of what you do have, who you are, and who you can be. Merriam Webster Dictionary describes content as feeling or showing satisfaction with one’s possessions, status, or situation. Contentment might imply that one is satisfied, appeased or gratified. A person that is not

content

may

feel

disappointed,

disheartened,

or

displeased.

Discontent, as described by Merriam Webster, is a sense of grievance or a restless aspiration for improvement. We live in a time in which contentment, as defined by the world, is a hair's width from our reach. By worldly standards we seek more success, more stuff, and more selfindulgent relationships. Each day we hope to gain more, and each night we slump into bed wondering where it went, feeling discontent. Let me conclude with a question to ask yourself: are you content with what you have?

SEVEN EXPRESSIONS OF THE LORD’S FAVOR

1. THE LORD INTERACTS WITH THE PERSON: The LORD appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day (Genesis 18:1,33). When the LORD had finished speaking with Abraham, he left, and Abraham returned home. (Genesis 18:33). 2. THE LORD DOES NOT BYPASS THE PERSON: He said, “If I have found favor in your eyes, my lord, do not pass your servant by." (Genesis 18:3,5). Let me get you something to eat, so you can be refreshed and then go on your way—now that you have come to your servant.” “Very well,” they answered, “do as you say” (Genesis 18:5). 3. THE LORD ENQUIRES ABOUT THE FAMILY: “Where is your wife Sarah?” they asked him. “There, in the tent,” he said. (Genesis 18:9).

26

Kingdom Perspectives I Nov -Dec 2021

4. THE LORD MEETS THE UNTOLD NEED: Then one of them said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son.” Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him (Genesis 18:10). 5. THE LORD ASSURES OF HIS ABILITY: And the LORD said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, when I am so old?’ (Genesis 18:13,14). Is anything too difficult for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, at this time next year, and Sarah will have a son” (Genesis 18:14). 6. THE LORD REVEALS WHAT HE DOES: Then the LORD said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do? (Genesis 18:17). 7. THE LORD REMEMBERS THE PURPOSE: For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just, so that the LORD will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.” (Genesis 18:19).
