End of Summer Watering Tips

As we move out of the dog days and into the fall, it’s time to adjust outdoor watering schedules and lawn maintenance. Not only can a lawn provide an outdoor play space, but it also prevents soil erosion, which keeps our waterways clean. In July, lawns may need to be watered two to three times a week. In September, watering sessions can be reduced to one or two per week.

Watering

• Many Colorado lawn issues are due to over or under watering. It’s important to find the right watering schedule for your lawn type, season and irrigation system.

• A half an inch of water is ideal for a single watering session.

• Try splitting a watering session into two smaller sessions to reduce puddling and water runoff.

• To reduce the amount of water lost to evaporation, water between 6 p.m. and 10 a.m.

Mowing

• Avoid mowing a drought-stressed lawn by watering at least 24 hours before mowing.

• Like with watering, mow during cooler parts of the day rather than the afternoon.

• Allow grass to grow taller, between two to three inches, to encourage healthy root development.

• Keep your blade sharp and follow the one-third rule. Avoid cutting off more than one-third of the lawn’s height in a single mowing.

Fertilizing

• Avoid over-fertilizing. Fertilizer that isn’t absorbed by the ground washes into the storm sewer system and pollutes local lakes and streams.

• More established lawns need less fertilizing than newer lawns.
