WATER EFFICIENCY

Town of Windsor Launches Water Audit Program It’s easy to forget that water plays an important role in everyday life. Water is used for fighting fires, filling recreational pools, treating wastewater, irrigating parks, maintaining streets, and most importantly, it’s treated and delivered to customers’ homes so that residents can take care of daily tasks such as brushing teeth, washing hands, staying hydrated, cleaning, cooking, flushing toilets, and more. And, although water resources might seem abundant—about 71% of the Earth’s surface is water—the planet only has 1% of water available for human use.* The remaining 70% is salt water in oceans, frozen water in the polar ice caps, or inaccessible for practical use. Because the Town of Windsor is in an area known for its semi-arid, high-desert climate, and knowing water is such a valuable resource, the Town of Windsor is offering complimentary indoor and outdoor water efficiency audits to Windsor Utility customers. The program is open to business owners, homeowners, and residents with a goal of assessing and improving the customer’s water efficiency.

Indoor Efficiency Audit According to the EPA, the average American family uses over 300 gallons of potable water per day at their home. During an indoor water audit, Windsor staff inspects the home or business for potable water leaks and unintended waste of water, and they try to identify inefficient appliances. In some cases, the auditor provides new shower heads and faucet aerators, and whenever possible, suggests repairs, rebates, and potential costsaving upgrades. Indoor audits are available year-round and are not just for homeowners. Landlords, property managers and commercial property owners are also encouraged to request an indoor water audit. Outdoor Efficiency Audit An outdoor irrigation efficiency audit is available for properties that use potable water for irrigation. During an outdoor assessment, the technician conducts a series of tests on the sprinkler system and assesses watering practices to determine how uniformly and effectively the system applies water to the lawn. Each outdoor water audit includes: a visual inspection of each zone to identify problems; tests that measure how much water is applied; a water pressure check and adjustment

recommendation; a custom watering schedule derived from the tests performed; and information about your lawn's seasonal needs for water. The hope is to help property owners achieve a healthier lawn and reduce outdoor water consumption through assessment and education. The outdoor water audit program runs from April through October. Help protect Windsor’s water resources by signing up for a free basic inspection and then following the technician’s water efficiency recommendations. THE BITE The Most Effective Way to Prevent West Nile Virus is to Prevent Mosquito Bites The Town of Windsor relies on data-based decision making and integrated mosquito management through a company called Vector Disease Control International (VDCI) to help control the spread of West Nile Virus in Windsor. VDCI conducts weekly mosquito testing and data collection to determine where mosquito control actions are needed.
