Grand Reopening Ribbon Cutting Story By Tony Centonze

Mandy & August Davis

Explorers Landing has been a popular feature of the Customs House Museum & Cultural Center for more than 25 years. In October of 2020, the Museum announced a generous donation from the Kiwanis Club of Clarksville in order to renovate the beloved space. Fast forward 15 months, and the newly renovated space re-opened for the first time to Museum visitors on Saturday, January 29. In addition to the title sponsorship from the Kiwanis Club, the Museum also received a major grant from the Clarksville-Montgomery County Community Health Foundation. The Foundation’s mission is to promote the general health and wellness of local residents. Explorers Landing is also sponsored in part by Clarksville Gas & Water, CDE Lightband, F&M Bank and Providence Builders. This new and improved hands-on educational exhibit, titled Exploring Our Town, highlights the different elements that impacted the establishment and growth of Clarksville, from farming and transportation to area.

HOW THE VILLAGES AT THE RIVER CLUB ELEVATES THEIR DINING EXPERIENCE A lot of our residents have traveled the globe internationally and expect local and regional food in their dining experience here at The Villages at the River Club. With today’s emphasis on health and wellness, our dining is about nutritious foods that meet the dietary needs of our seniors. To keep pace with our active residents, we offer the following dining venues: Restaurant Dining: more traditional sit-down venue features everchanging menus and even carryout options. Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch, Bistro & Dinner options. Casual dining: For a less formal option, we also offer a more casual bistro dining experience. Private dining rooms: If you’re celebrating a special event or anniversary with guests, you can reserve a community’s private dining room and have the culinary team put together a special menu. Coffee service area: Perfect for meeting friends for coffee and a muffin or just catching up on the latest news. Grab and go: This allows residents to order a meal before heading off to their next activity. Local eats: We frequently drive to area restaurants for a change in pace, fellowship & menu items. With a focus on health and longevity, we try to offer many options for healthy ways to eat. We have added more health-conscious options to our senior living dining menus, including: Farm-to-fork: These menu items feature locally grown or sourced dishes to ensure greater freshness. We also have an on-site herb & vegetable garden where we can take advantage of the produce from residenttended gardens. Seasonal menus: Our chef likes to work with fresh ingredients and will plan our menus around seasonally available options including fruits, produce and seafood. Special occasions: Our community will feature special dishes that are only available for a limited time to celebrate holidays or other special occasions. Vegetarian: For health and wellness reasons, more seniors are looking for non-meat options. Our chefs can create delicious dishes that also meet their nutritional needs. Brain-healthy: Our menus feature foods shown to promote brain health like green veggies, oily fish, berries, walnuts, and coffee and tea. Heart-healthy: To promote heart health, our menus feature items like skinless chicken breast and other cuts of lean meat, beans, whole grains, and fruits and vegetables. At The Villages, food matters here! We encourage our residents to provide the community with anonymous feedback on food and service quality as well as allow in-person feedback during our Resident Council Meetings with our Executive Chef. Based on recent feedback, instead of taking orders with a pad and pen, our community waitstaff use tablets to transmit requests directly to the kitchen. Dining is an important part of choosing a community so when you narrow down options and start to do in-person visits, that’s a good time to try our food and see if it fits your tastes. 16 • VIP CLARKSVILLE MAGAZINE

CLARKSVILLE ACADEMY

We give young people the confidence and support to explore the world around them, to feel inspired, and to achieve their full potential with a well-balanced enriched education. Clarksville Academy is a PreK-12 independent, co-educational school nestled in the 2nd Street corridor of the Clarksville downtown area. Founded in 1970 by a group of parents who recognized the importance of, and need for, a strong independent school in Clarksville. Clarksville Academy (CA) has fifty plus years of traditions and proven success of educating Clarksville and surrounding area youth, preparing them to matriculate to top local and national universities. While CA focuses on a vigorous academic program, it also recognizes the importance of co-curricular opportunities for its students to develop them as healthy, engaged, and active participants of their community through athletic, club, and civic opportunities. Head of Upper School, Denise Walker, shares “Clarksville Academy’s Portrait of a Graduate is the description for the goal of our students who accept the challenge of our vigorous offerings. Our Portrait of a Graduate states our graduates are engaged learners who are inquisitive and thoughtful. They are effective communicators who foster relationships while advocating for self and others.” Current CA seniors, a class of 57 students, exemplify this Portrait of a Graduate. The class of 2022 has a combined GPA of 3.63. Factoring into this impressive GPA is the rigorous course work elected by these students. Advanced Placement (AP) courses have been chosen by 86% of the students, totaling 121 AP courses taken overall. In addition to AP courses, CA offers Dual Enrollment options to its students through APSU, taught by CA faculty. In this senior class, 68% of the students have also taken 220 Dual Enrollment course hours. Walker adds, “Clarksville Academy students enter into colleges with the possibility to have enough credit hours to be considered a sophomore at the time of initial enrollment.” While their academic record is proven, CA also strives to instill moral integrity and civic responsibility. Each year, students are actively engaged in programs such as Youth Leadership Clarksville, Key Club, Interact, and Mayor’s Youth Council, just to name a few. CA takes an approach to lay a foundation for engagement in community activities like these. In early elementary grades, CA’s Lower School, students find out how to be a part of a classroom community and how to care for each other with kindness and respect. This carries on into the Middle School when students are introduced to the school’s Honor Code. An Upper School student-led Honor Council guides Middle School students in an understanding of honor and integrity, a focus to capitalize on peer-topeer mentorship. “Moral integrity is a cornerstone of our school’s mission.” Walker adds. “The honor system is meant to be an inheritance and a charge for all CA students to respect and pledge to uphold. Upon entering Upper School, students participate in a ceremony to sign and commit to the school’s honor code.” Clarksville Academy recognizes the importance of looking at students in a multi-faceted way. Student development certainly happens in the classroom, but it also happens during extracurricular activities. Jake Peterson, Director of Athletics, says, “Our school size allows all students the opportunity to be involved in an athletic activity. Sports provide an opportunity for teamwork, accountability, responsibility, and learning how to work with others. Athletics provide an outlet for school pride and spirit. It brings an unmatched excitement to the student body and allows students to excel in something they love.” Again, to measure this aspect of school life, the Class of 2022 has another set of impressive numbers. Participation in athletics is widespread with 18 • VIP CLARKSVILLE MAGAZINE

77% of the class playing at least one sport, and 46% are multi-sport athletes. At press time, 14% of these athletes have signed, or will sign, to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level, with more likely to follow. CA is competitive in its TSSAA athletic division and has seen success competing at the district, regional, and state arenas. Looking ahead, Clarksville Academy is eager to continue the legacy of producing confident and independent future leaders who are prepared to be successful in their next learning communities. With an average tuition for the 2022-2023 school year of less than $13,000, the cost for a CA education is almost a third of nearby Nashville independent schools. If the Class of 2022 serves as an example of the investment in CA education, the return on the investment is impressive. The colleges and universities who will receive these students in the fall of 2022 have much to anticipate. Three Sport Student Athlete, Lo-Paris Pridgen Bratcher, ’22, Austin Peay State University How do you balance school and being a full-time athlete? Paris: I balance school and athletics the best I can. The easiest way to explain it is whenever I’m not participating in a sport, I am probably doing schoolwork! I play three sports: football, basketball, and baseball. Tell us about your college choice. What are you most looking forward to, and why did you choose to commit to this specific school? Paris: I signed to play baseball at APSU because of the opportunity I saw there. It is close to home, and I enjoy the relationships I’ve been able to develop while on campus. The atmosphere is amazing from what I was able to see during visits to games. I had narrowed my search to attend a school in Tennessee, and APSU was just an overall better for my mother and me. When did you become a student at CA? What impact do you think it has had on your life? Paris: I started attending CA in the second semester of my 7th grade year, so it was approximately 5 ½ years ago. CA has impacted my life because it taught me how to balance school demands and playing sports at the highest level. The environment here is amazing, and I love it! Military Academy Nominee, Christina Webber, ’22, West Point Why did you decide to attend a military academy instead of college? Christina: I decided I wanted to strive to achieve attendance at a military academy because I wanted to serve my country and grow my leadership capabilities. When thinking about the next steps in life, it became apparent an academy is the perfect place to do that. What would you deem the most rewarding aspect of your time at Clarksville Academy? How would you say that molded you for future endeavors? Christina: The most rewarding aspect of my time at Clarksville Academy would have to be the sense of community CA provides for all students. I have no idea where I would be in my educational experience if I didn’t have teachers who personally cared about my well-being and my success in their classes. CA produces students who are ready to take on the world and all the challenges they may face in it.

From Pre-Kindergarten through grade 12, Clarksville Academy offers a varied college preparatory program designed to help our students gain extensive academic, artistic, athletic, and leadership skills that will prepare them for all future endeavors. Producing confident, independent young people with strong moral values is the goal of this institution, thus the student is the focus of everything that is done. At the heart of a Clarksville Academy education is developing a love of learning that will follow these students throughout their lives.

SALUTE TO SERVICE A U S T I N P E AY S TAT E U N I V E R S I T Y

William E. and Sadako S. Newton Military Family Resource Center Due to its close proximity to Fort Campbell, it comes as no surprise that Austin Peay has become host to a vast number of military-affiliated students. As the University steadily progressed through each semester, so did the need to establish a newly imagined resource center for those affiliated with the military community. With that vision and purpose in mind, Austin Peay proudly opened the doors to the William E. and Sadako S. Newton Military Family Resource Center. This remarkable vision, that came to life, wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support of Austin Peay Alumni, Wilma Newton (73’) who donated the funds needed to renovate the facility. To repay this generosity, the resource center was named after her late parents William E. & Sadako S. Newton. Located near the campus at 426 College St, the 5,200-square-foot Newton Military Family Resource Center has earned its title as the largest military center in Tennessee; widely outsizing the old Military Student Center that measured in at just 700-square-feet. The number of military-affiliated students at Austin Peay has remained steady for the last five years. Around 25% of the total body population is affiliated; meaning anywhere from 2,400 to 2,700 students needed a newly imagined facility to be their home away from home. “I became the head of the Military Student Center in November 2007, and immediately started working on a needs base assessment to help determine current student needs,” Jasmin Linares, Retired Army Veteran, Military Student Center Coordinator explained. “I started holding focus groups and asking students for their feedback on our services- specifically services provided to military-affiliated students on our campus. Most of the feedback I got was in regards to needing a bigger space. As a member of the APSU Military Education Task Force, I started sharing with them the feedback from the assessment and focus groups; which led to us forming a subcommittee that presented to former President, Dr. Alisa White, our top three ideas aimed to improve the service we provide to our military-affiliated students. One of the ideas was to get a bigger space, and about a year later we were so lucky to receive the generous donation from Ms. Wilma Newton; making our dream a reality.” The resource center is home to many great resources that aim to address any unique challenges the military-affiliated population may face. One of

the most popular programs being Text for Vets; which utilizes textbook donations to provide textbooks to students free of charge. However, the resources don’t end there. There are also mentoring and outreach programs available to students who may need additional assistance deciding which routes to travel in their future endeavors. “The Newton Center has become a resource hub for our militaryaffiliated students, not only for university services but also for a number of community partners who provide services at the center or plan to provide services there in the near future (Veterans Upward Bound, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Montgomery County Veteran Services Organization, Stephen A. Cohen Military Family Clinic, etc.),” Retired Maj. Gen. Walt Lord, APSU Military Advisor in Residence explained. The newly renovated center will continue on the tradition of supporting military-affiliated students during their academic careers while at Austin Peay. In addition to housing several University and military offices, the newly renovated building features a computer lab, a lounge area for watching television, eating, and unwinding, tables for studying, and a self-serve coffee and tea bar. Although relocated, the center continues in its predecessor’s efforts to provide valuable resources for Austin Peay’s military student population. The Newton Family Resource Center will act as a “safe haven” for those looking for a welcoming, military-orientated environment. “Military-affiliated students typically comprise a quarter of our entire student population, so from a practical perspective, it makes good sense to ensure that we’re taking good care of them,” Lord explained. “We also realize that Clarksville is a very military and Veteran friendly community and we see it as our duty to contribute to that environment. One of the most daunting challenges to many Veterans’ success is the feeling of separation they experience after leaving the military. We feel like we’ve lost the connection to our ‘tribe’ and all of the support that tribe provides. Whenever I meet a new Veteran student at the center, I tell them that their tribe might look a little different now, but that we’re still here for them and that they’ll find us- their supportive tribe at the Newton Center.”

Find Your Family Fun As we slowly start to welcome in the warmer weather, leading up to the spring season, many fun family-friendly events begin to make their way out of the woodwork. That means arts and crafts classes, family movie nights, and outdoor activities galore! However, just because there are a plethora of events to choose from, doesn’t mean that it’s just as easy to physically find said events. If you are one of the silent majority struggling to find what family-friendly events are coming up, then look no further, because Macaroni Kid Clarksville has got you covered! Like many other traditional online blog guides, the idea to start Macaroni Kid Clarksville was stemmed from difficulties locating reliable online resources. Publisher Megan Vargas realized that finding local, family-friendly, activities and events to attend was harder than originally imagined. From that simple difficulty, Macaroni Kid Clarksville was born; providing valuable information for parents within Montgomery County. Vargas shared, “After the birth of my youngest son Max, I decided to leave my full-time 9-5 job and begin my journey as a work from home mom. During this time, I wanted to find fun events and activities for my son to engage in, but couldn’t seem to find good, reliable information when it came to kid friendly fun. This is when I decided to become a Macaroni Kid publisher mom with a mission to not only connect local families to fun in our community but also one another. Since Macaroni Kid Clarksville was founded in Feb of 2018, we have been a valuable resource to thousands of moms, especially through our website, weekly e-newsletter, and social media platforms.” Macaroni Kid Clarksville is THE ultimate guide for all things family fun! They keep an updated monthly calendar of events, provide arts and crafts tutorials, and even dish out helpful tips and tricks. And did we mention that it’s completely complimentary?!

The resources that Macaroni Kid Clarksville provides aren’t the only things that make it so uniquely special. There is also the, sometimes overlooked, element of having a true advocate behind the computer screen. Not only does she have her best interests at heart, but Vargas has also ridden the “struggle” bus a few times herself; making her the best person for the almost daunting role as publisher of Macaroni Kid Clarksville. “At Macaroni Kid Clarksville, our primary focus is helping families find free and affordable family fun! Keeping the kids educated, entertained (and some days even exhausted) doesn’t have to cost a fortune. A few examples of this include StoryTime at the Clarksville-Montgomery County Public Library, monthly events and activities hosted by Clarksville Parks and Recreation and even planned playdates at one of our amazing local parks,” Vargas explained. “Studies continue to show us that quality early childhood development, filled with healthy engagement with their peers and family members, are key determinants of future health and well-being. Being an advocate for healthy family dynamics is at the core of what we do.”

“Macaroni Kid Clarksville is a FREE parenting resource website and e-newsletter dedicated to helping local parents, grandparents and caregivers find fun, family-friendly events and activities in our community,” Vargas detailed. “We have a free kid friendly events calendar located on our website with details about each family-friendly event. In addition, we offer helpful guides, local business information, parenting tips, product reviews, contests, fun giveaways, and more! Our mission is to be your “one-stop-shop” for all things family fun related in the Clarksville area.”

MEET THE

C L A R KSV I L L E P O L I C E D E PA RT M E N T SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT

When you hear the phrase, Special Victims Unit, what do you immediately think of? For most of us, we automatically refer to the popularized television show, Law and Order, but for the other select few, we know the reality is much harsher than what is depicted by the dramatized Hollywood show. Tasked with investigating crimes of an extremely sensitive nature, most incidents involving sexual misconduct, physical abuse, and neglect of children, the Special Victims Unit (SVU) deals with situations many would find not only unimaginable but unforgivable. “The Special Victims Unit is a group of specially trained detectives who are victim-focused. While investigating, we recognize trauma caused by the incident, and address the trauma first and foremost,” Detective Allen Pendarvis explained. “We mostly work sex crimes along with child abuse cases. SVU detectives are like no other detectives in the department because we commonly work hand-in-hand with many other specialized organizations on one case to better serve the survivors. We often provide them with medical assistance, police reports, orders of protection, accommodations for housing, transportation, counseling, and legal advocacy.” Aiming to provide specialized attention to the most vulnerable segments of the community, SVU treats its victims with the utmost respect. Their goal is to ensure that each case is investigated properly and thoroughly to bring closure to victims and their families. “Sexually oriented crimes are personal violent crimes that have great psychological or physical effects on the victims. It is the policy of the Clarksville Police Department to assist victims of sexually oriented crimes in a supportive manner, using appropriate crisis intervention skills,” Detective Elijah Horton said. “Because of the special considerations involved in investigations of sexually oriented crimes, this policy encourages a multidisciplinary, coordinated community response. Public confidence in the reporting and investigative process will encourage all victims of sexually oriented crimes to report the crime; reducing recidivism through the apprehension and prosecution of the assailants is a department priority.” No amount of mental stability truly prepares you for the duties experienced by the officers within the SVU. Not only is the work taxing, but it is also alarming, and in some cases utterly tragic. However, the men and women of the SVU didn’t shy away from these challenging expectations, but instead take it upon themselves to take charge, and make a difference. Detective Sean Walden shares, “My main motivation is to positively play a role in helping victims of sex crimes and abuse get through a traumatic event. It is not only important to keep children safe from abusers, but it’s also vital to help victims heal, find closure, and grow towards a better

future. Being a part of the SVU is a very important task in itself; being that it’s both difficult to investigate and even think of to begin with.” As it takes a special person to investigate these types of crimes, the detectives assigned to the Special Victims Unit are highly trained and professional. Each officer within the unit understands what occurrences need to be addressed, and aims to actively use due diligence to bring awareness to everyone within the local community. “The required training is no different than every other detective position within the department. However, many opportunities are available that specifically go along with SVU,” Detective Pendarvis explains. “There are specialized interview and interrogation classes specifically geared toward SVU because interviewing a child predator is much different than other offenders. There is also victim informed training, which helps identify trauma caused by sexual assaults, and further assists detectives explaining to prosecutors and jury’s why a victim could be acting a certain way.” In regards to the benefits SVU has on the local community, Sergeant Sunisa Hamilton says, “The Special Victims Unit is one of many local organizations who can bring sexual assault awareness to both children and adults within our community. As the city grows, we hope to decrease the overall number of sexual assaults and crimes committed against our most vulnerable community members – the children. Awareness, education, and prevention are key. With our training and knowledge of current and local trends, the Special Victims Unit can educate various age groups on evolving topics such as (but not limited to) the importance of internet safety, what consent is/looks like, signs of human trafficking, good touch/bad touch, and what is and isn’t considered child pornography.” Looking towards the future the SVU is optimistic as they push towards growing the program. This push will hopefully allow the SVU to continue its efforts in bettering the lives of those most vulnerable within our community. “As the city grows, we hope to see SVU expand with it. We would like to be more proactive when dealing with incidents such as online predators. The goal is to grow as a team player within the community so we can match (or exceed) the ability to serve the needs of the citizens,” Sergeant Hamilton expressed. Detective Horton added, “We hope to accomplish successful convictions of those who are guilty to bring a sense of relief to the victims who seek justice.” March 2022 • 35

Maid In America In the latter half of 2020, Maid in America Cleaning Services got its start- as a military-owned joint venture. Spawned from the desire to serve the community in which they have grown to love, and cherish, CoOwners Devin and Shelby Ramos decided they wanted to contribute to Clarksville in any capacity possible. With that simple goal in mind, Maid in America was born. Moving to Clarksville in 2014 due to the military, Devin and Shelby knew Clarksville was something special. The sense of community they found here was truly indescribable. Due to their positive experiences, they both wanted to give back all the love and support they received by opening a cleaning service aimed at making everyday life a little easier- and a WHOLE lot cleaner. “We want to serve OUR community. Clarksville is our home. We have been here since 2014 and have begun to raise a family here, build everlasting relationships and contribute to this amazing city,” Devin explained. “We offer a variety of cleaning services to you; Standard cleans, deep cleans, construction cleans, and moving cleans all directed at lessening the burden of having a dirty office or home.” Due to the abundant support throughout Clarksville, Maid in America has officially moved into an office space that they can call home. Now located at 1860 Wilma Rudolph Blvd STE 105B, Maid in America is

hopeful for what the future has in store for them here in Clarksville. They plan to continue in their efforts to humbly serve their current and future, customers, as they embark on this new journey of growth and expansion. Devin said, “We understand the mental health benefits of a clean environment. A clean home or office can uplift your mood, heighten your focus and help you find the calm throughout the chaos of everyday life. Therefore, it is our mission to give back to our community through our specialty--cleaning. One of our core functions is providing free cleans to those families in need. Quarterly, we ask for public nominations and then serve those families with a clean for free. We have an ambitious goal of serving 52 families a year!” “Though I am the Managing Director, Shelby Ramos, my wife, and our Marketing Director, is just as responsible for our vision. This is just as much her company as it is mine. Neither one of us would be able to do this without the other,” Devin continued. “We are grateful for the customers that have given us a chance, helped us grow, and provided an opportunity for us to improve our craft. We are also grateful for our wonderful employees that have contributed so much already and continue to be the most committed to providing the highest quality cleans. We’d like to thank VIP Clarksville for recognizing us and look forward to many years of service within our community.”

“I hope we can be your safe place! Moms deserve so much!” -Cheyenne Day 50 • VIP CLARKSVILLE MAGAZINE

One of the ultimate struggles of being a parent is determining what wants to be sacrificed in order to entertain your children. Whether it’s tuning into Coco Melon instead of watching that new episode of 90 Day Fiancé, or turning down lunch invites because you’re worried that rambunctious little one will be anything but restrained, there seemed to never be an option that catered to both of your wants simultaneously. However, that is no longer the case as a newly imagined business has made its way to the Clarksville area. Owner and operating director Cheyenne Day experienced the trials and tribulations that many parents tend to struggle with. With those struggles in mind, Day made it her mission to bring a new, and fresh, spin on traditional indoor play facilities. “Mochas & Minis was inspired by my two sons, Logan (6) and Luke (3). Being busy parents of two rambunctious boys left us looking for a family-friendly outlet for them to play. We tried local entertainment but our three-year-old was too small to enjoy any of it,” Day shared. “We thought, what could be better than an indoor playground? Even better, what could be better than an indoor playground that catered kids AND their parents so we combined play & coffee! That’s exactly how we came up with Mochas & Minis!” Mochas & Minis is an indoor play facility and café; mixing in children’s entertainment with parent rest and relaxation. “Mochas & Minis is a family-friendly play space for children ages eight and under. Our cafe

serves paninis, baked goods, handcrafted cream sodas, coffee & energy refreshers,” Day detailed. “Our play area features a toddler area as well as a separate playground for our older friends. Our luxury cafe has an extensive menu, sure to please both adults & children. The cafe is completely separate from the play area. So, if you’re enjoying a kid-free day you can still come by and enjoy a delicious mocha!” Not only does Mochas & Minis provide a centralized space, that both children and their parents can enjoy, but they also stress the importance that child group play has on children. Day explained, “Active imaginative play is very important. We strive to bring children together in a safe environment to learn social skills as well as creative and critical thinking skills. Through play your little one can experience the world around them and how things work.” The Mochas & Minis team is excited and hopeful about what the future of their business can bring to the Clarksville area. They aspire to continue to be a valuable resource to the local parent’s community for many years to come. “We are o excited to be such a huge source for the community. The support has been so great for our small business and we can’t thank you enough,” Day said. “Our goal is to continue to be a resource for parents, especially moms who need a place away from home to reset. We hope to bring more fun, more events & more memories to you and your families.”

Benefits of Hiring An In - Home Nanny V S . A T R A D I T I O N A L D AYC A R E S E T T I N G

All children in childcare deserve to have a caring, warm and responsive caregiver who provides a loving and nurturing environment.

leave for work, allowing you and your children to get ready and enjoy a stress-free start to the day.

When children receive one-on-one care, the interactions they have with a trusted caregiver helps give them the sense of self-worth and security needed to confidently explore their world and how they fit into it. When a child develops a healthy relationship with a consistent caregiver, it helps to create a stress-free environment where the child thrives.

While daycares have strict requirements regarding sending mildly ill children to their centers, nannies are accustomed to caring for mildly ill children, which means you don’t have to worry about finding backup care or calling out of work sick.

How children function as they grow into adulthood hinges on the experiences they have during the first few years of their lives. If children are raised by caring and attentive adults and are in a safe, stable and predictable environment, experts tell us that they are more likely to do better in school and in other crucial areas of life. Brain development during the first years of a child’s life is very rapid and is vulnerable to environmental influence. During the formative years, both positive and negative influences may have a lifelong effect on children. A nanny is hired by parents to provide customized, personalized and attentive care to the couple’s children in the family’s private home. Nannies meet the physical, emotional, social and intellectual needs of the children in their care. Nannies do more than entertain the children; they engage them by providing age-appropriate activities to enjoy together. On a typical day with his nanny, your child may enjoy a walk to the park, a play date with group of similarly aged friends, a nutritious lunch, a few stories and a restful afternoon nap. These types of intentional interactions increase language and social skills, provide an opportunity for children to safely explore their environments and build the foundation for self-discipline. Unlike in a daycare setting where caregivers must focus on all the needs of all the children, a nanny is only concerned with your children. Since nannies care for children in their own homes, they aren’t exposed to the myriad of germs and infectious diseases found in daycare settings, which means fewer trips to the doctor’s office and fewer prescriptions of antibiotics. Since a nanny is your employee, you establish the framework for your employment relationship. Not only do you get to handpick your child’s caregiver, you set the hours, the salary package and standards of care you wish upheld. Unlike in a daycare center where your child has to adapt to the rules and regimens of the program, you can work with your nanny to establish the care environment and daily schedule that best meets your child’s needs. Having to get yourself out of house on time can be a battle, never mind having to get the children up, ready and out the door for daycare. Since your nanny comes to your home, she can arrive well before you need to

54 • VIP CLARKSVILLE MAGAZINE

And speaking of sickness, while children cared for by nannies have many social opportunities, nannies can limit a child’s exposure to sick children, therefore limiting his germ exposure. While some parents write-off hiring a nanny believing it’s an option that isn’t affordable, the truth is when parents have more than one child requiring childcare or work untraditional hours, nanny care can be more cost-effective than daycare. In addition to not having to pay premiums and fees for early and late care, parents pay per family, not per slot. Finding ther perfect nanny for your family can seem overwheling and unattainable, thats where The Nanny Collection comes into play. They extensively vet all interested providers through a 12 point screening process. This key process includes government level background checks, in depth application and resume reviews, multiple rounds of interviews, and personally conducted reference checks. Once they find a few qualified applicants that they think would fit in perfectly with your family, you are able to personally meet and identify your top choice! All nannies and childcare providers that The Nanny Collection refers to you will be offered key training opportunities before the start of employment commences, including those as critical as SIDS, CPR + Basic Life Support, and First Aid. The Nanny Collection then drafts you and your nanny a personalized work agreement and a legally binding, lawyer approved employment contract. This helps protect both the family and the nanny if any issues were to arise by setting clear and realistic expectations, Once the placement is made, they help aide you in the hiring process by setting you up with numerous different professional connections, including one with our preferred payroll company, an industry leader. The Nanny Collection is truly with you every step of the way, and continue to offer support to both the family, as well as to the nanny. They know that as your children grow, their needs will change! This is why they want their nannies to continue to grow with them. In order to advocate for this shared growth, they offer our nannies biweekly professional development opportunities at free or little cost.

YO U R C H I L D C A R E S E A R C H . E L E VAT E D. At The Nanny Collection, we operate by a highly researched and refined placement process. Developed with agency tested and industry proven techniques in mind, our nanny placement process is guaranteed to provide an elite, tailored experience unlike any of our competitors. Our agency strives to demonstrate an unmatched commitment to professional excellence, only working alongside individuals who demonstrate a profound commitment to becoming the best versions of themselves that they can be, which is precisely why we believe in offering exclusive professional development opportunities to our nannies at little to free cost. We feel that these measures not only ensure the highest quality of care at the start of the working relationship, but help constantly shape it from that point on.

We pride ourselves on giving you the best experience possible and making sure that all your party-planning dreams come true! - Inflate Clarksville

T

he recent modern twist on classic bounce houses has taken the Instagram world by storm. If you haven’t heard about it, odds are your friends, or even friends of friends have heard about the global bounce house trend that has literally changed the game. If you’re still confused, what we’re talking about is the White Bounce House. What makes this inflatable so unique is that it is completely white; making it an Instagram-worthy candidate for any social event. As more and more people have hopped on the trend, it has become commonplace to see them at any event imaginable- even adult gatherings, such as weddings. Realizing that this trend wasn’t dying down any time soon, but instead picking up tremendous speed, Sariah and Aaron Glenn decided to start a local business that specialized in the infamous white bounce house. Co-Owners Sariah and Aaron Glenn started the business venture of their dreams by opening Inflate Clarksville. “My husband, Aaron, and I relocated to Clarksville with his job a little over a year ago amidst the pandemic. Aaron has always had an entrepreneurial heart and when the opportunity arose to bring Inflate to Clarksville (the company originated in Arizona) everything just felt right,” Sariah shared. “With Aaron’s background in business banking and his experience in customer service, paired with my experience in project management and marketing, we knew we could really elevate the bounce house business locally. As we have opened our bookings, and have been active in the community, we continue to have person after person tell us how they were just wishing the other day that Clarksville had a local white castle bounce house biz. We feel so lucky and honored to fulfil that call and to contribute to our

local community in a meaningful way! We love a good party and are beyond excited to be here!” Inflate Clarksville is unique in the exclusivity that it offers. They of course have the traditional all white bounce castle, but they also have Tennessee’s first and only white bounce house/slide combo! All of their products are open for any event, and for any age group, making their business not only exclusive, but inclusive! “Inflate Clarksville is one of Clarksville’s newest local businesses, and Clarksville’s first ever White Castle Bounce House Company,” Sariah said. “We offer a variety of castles, including our newly named Swan Lake Bounce house and a White Castle Combo with a slide! Our gorgeous White Castles are the perfect way to dress up any event or theme and are loved by children and adults alike! Rent them for a fun afternoon of jumping, to celebrate a loved one, or for the perfect photo op! They’re the perfect way to make memories while getting tons of your kiddos energy out and allow you to plan the perfect budget friendly event without having to compromise on looks!” If you, or anyone you know, is having an event and would be interested in incorporating the unique offerings Inflate Clarksville provides, feel free to check them out on social media! Sariah shares, “The best way to stay up to date on any events we will be participating in or exclusive offers is to follow along with us on our social media! We are currently planning on participating in a local event in May and a summer camp in July and look forward to partnering with other small businesses in the future!”

Recovery Court Team

Story & Photography by Tony Centonze Special Olympics Tennessee raised more than $18,000 at this year’s Polar Plunge, due in no small part to the efforts of CPD Captain Liane Wilson who personally raised over $10,000. Several teams took their turn diving into 40-degree water on a day when the temperature was in the low 20s. Teams representing CPD, APSU Police, APSU Cheerleaders, Montgomery County Recovery Court, and others braved the cold, once again “freezin’ for a reason.” COVID-19 has deeply impacted Special Olympics Tennessee athletes by further isolating an already at-risk population, leading to mental health struggles and poor physical well-being. Without the opportunity to participate in Special Olympics Tennessee programming, thousands of athletes lose access to fitness and wellness resources. However, through fundraising efforts such as The Polar Plunge, Special Olympics Tennessee is able to keep their athletes healthy and begin to safely return to activities.

Renowned Security/Intelligence Expert Named First Director Of APSU Institute For National Security And Military Studies Last spring, Austin Peay State University announced it was creating the state’s first Institute for National Security and Military Studies, and now – with a new Bachelor of Science in National Security Studies set to begin this fall – the university has hired a renowned security and intelligence studies expert to lead this new program. On Feb. 1, Dr. Matthew Crosston, senior research fellow for the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv, Israel, will become the inaugural director of Austin Peay’s new institute. Crosston is also senior advisor for the Research Institute for European and American Studies in Athens, Greece; senior fellow at the China Eurasia Council for Political and Strategic Research in Nanjing, China; executive vice chairman of ModernDiplomacy.eu; and a former professor of strategic intelligence and global security at the American Military University. “I am deeply honored and humbled about being offered the opportunity to become the institute’s inaugural director,” Crosston said. “Regardless of anyone’s background, professional career or personal interests, the fact of the matter is that everyone cares about the subjects we will address at the institute, everyone has a take, everyone finds what we do fascinating. That is a heavy but inspiring responsibility about which we are all wildly passionate.” “Austin Peay, with its proximity to the Fort Campbell Army Post, is the state’s leading provider of higher education to military-affiliated students, and we’re

not only proud of this fact – we take it very seriously,” APSU President Mike Licari said last spring. “This institute will allow us to provide exemplary and unprecedented levels of educational and professional programs not only to these students but also to other individuals who are interested in advancing their careers in national security.” In the coming months, Crosston will fine-tune the program and help develop the institute’s identity. He plans to use his experience and expertise to garner it an international reputation. “While the original idea for this may have started with the goal of being an important organization for the state of Tennessee, it is my hope and intention to drive the institute into becoming one of the world’s major contributors to and make the name Austin Peay synonymous with the study of national security and military affairs in every way possible,” he said. “If it is good to live in interesting times, then these are interesting times indeed!” Crosston earned his doctorate in political science from Brown University, his Master of Arts in the politics of transition and development from University College London and his Bachelor of Arts in Russian Studies from Colgate University. He serves on the advisory board of the International Journal of Intelligence and Counterintelligence, and he recently advised on the development of two new doctoral programs at St. John’s University and North Carolina State University, in Homeland Security Management and International Security, respectively.

The institute, housed within the APSU College of Behavioral and Health Sciences, will oversee three areas of focus: • Educational programs (both credit and noncredit). • Military outreach activities. • Interdisciplinary research on national security, intelligence and military life.

Nashville State Clarksville Campus Gets $34 Million In State Funding For Expansion

Governor Bill Lee has included $34,080,000 in his 2022-2023 fiscal year budget for Nashville State Community College’s Clarksville campus expansion. There is a requirement to match a portion of the funds. The expansion project is a collaboration between the College and TCAT Clarksville campus. Leading up to the budget unveiling, the Tennessee Higher Education Commission had placed the project among its top capital funding requests after the Tennessee Board of Regents submitted it as one of its top three priorities. Mayors Durrett and Pitts made it the number two priority for Clarksville-Montgomery County. “The College appreciates the support of the governor and all of our champions in Clarksville and Montgomery County,” said Nashville State President Dr. Shanna L. Jackson. “If the legislature funds this project, it will make a tremendous impact by expanding access, allowing for increased coordination among several major local institutions, be a workforce solution driver, and provide career training opportunities for residents that do not currently exist.” Nashville State has been a dedicated member of the ClarksvilleMontgomery County community since 2012. The campus opened with 257 students and enrollment has grown to more than 900. By 2017, the campus exceeded its capacity for serving students, and a four-classroom modular was installed to accommodate demand. With expansion, an additional 800 students will be served. The expansion will allow for the addition of new academic programslike Nursing A.S.N, Licensed Practical Nurse, Secondary Education A.S.T, 92 •CLARKSVILLE BUSINESS JOURNAL

Computer Programming A.A.S., Industrial Process Control A.A.S., and workforce training. Expanded resources to support student success, such as a dedicated veterans’ lounge, welcome center, new bookstore, Campus Cupboard food pantry, testing space for industry certifications, ADA testing center, library and study area, and tutoring support rooms. Nashville State’s ability to offer Licensed Practical Nursing would free up much needed space at the TCAT. The proposed expansion will create a community-based Center for Higher Education that will allow and strengthen strategic partnerships with TCAT, CMCSS, Ft. Campbell, and APSU to better meet the needs of the area. This joint project will open up space for more technical and workforce programs at the TCAT.

This habit is not inherited, but instead learned and adopted, through our fast-paced and continuously routine-orientated society. However, after facing the COVID-19 pandemic, mental-health struggles seem to have reached an all-time record high, bringing more social awareness to the topic. I also know what it’s like to know in your gut what you have to do but feel absolutely terrified to do it.” With these personal experiences and considerations in mind, Chelsey made it her mission to help anyone within the local community who has experienced narcissistic abuse or relationship trauma -- in the

process creating specifically tailored programs to best fit any type of circumstance one may be facing. Montgomery County’s First Mixed Use Community 307-acre mixed use planned unit development, the second phase of a 423-acre master planned community, to be built in Montgomery County, Tennessee.

A premier master-planned community designed by renowned town planners, Sizemore Group and Moore Design Services has been submitted for the rezoning of a 307-acre site on Rossview Road in northeast Montgomery County. Local development company, Rossview Farms, has undertaken to build Killebrew, a mixed-use planned development with an emphasis on community and personal well-being, blending urban living and nature. The premier master-planned community in Montgomery County has the aspiration of becoming the most livable community in all of Tennessee, purposely architecturally designed to enhance the way people live, work, play, learn and socialize. With several thousand residents expected to reside in the area over the duration of the development, an investment in high-end, inclusive facilities and extensive nature trails across an expansive nature preserve, add to the contemporary and traditional homes, apartments and townhomes in the luxury development. “The continued growth of our community requires more housing, schools and facilities, demanding better use of our resources. Our investment into the Rossview Road area East of Exit 8, started in 2005,” said Director of Rossview Farms, Ronnie Moore. “For the past three years we have envisioned what a masterplan community would look like and officially started Phase I in the Fall of 94 • CLARKSVILLE BUSINESS JOURNAL

2020, with the agreement to develop the Kirkwood School Complex for CMCSS.” The design team, led by the Sizemore Group, has closely studied the area, growth predictions, market and site analysis, local zoning and numerous regional mixed-use planned developments to create a walkable urban environment that transforms the way people live and interact within their community. The masterplan has been designed to include a Main Street, nature preserve, education, performing arts, sports and entertainment district, live/work environments and an array of restaurants and boutique shops surrounded by manicured parks. The vibrancy of the town center ensures that Killebrew accommodates a broad range of experiences and opportunities for its residents and patrons, while providing outdoor gathering spaces and ample nature for everyone to enjoy. Rezoning of the 307-acre site will allow for the expanding Montgomery County population to have further accommodation for growth, with a purpose-built community designed for the ultimate living environment. The site will encompass more than 70 acres of nature with a recreation preserve, key to keeping maximum greenspace within the community. Killebrew will be constructed in several phases.
