The Roxy Regional Theatre recently hosted Gala 39, with supporters helping celebrate 39 years of live theater in historic downtown Clarksville. “We’re celebrating,” R yan Bowie said. “We had to skip this event last year, so we’re happy to be back and able to see all our patrons again. Everyone is helping us kick off what we hope will be a full season that will take us through August of 2022.”

popular new year resolutions AND HOW TO ACTUALLY FOLLOW THROUGH WITH THEM
Get In Shape Like many other lists, this resolution is at the top. There are countless work-out routines and diet regimens that you can follow, but finding the plan that works for you specifically is key. You will need a combination that gets you in shape steadily and will also be easy to stick to in the long run. There are plenty of resources out there that will help you get on the right track. If you need further guidance, lean towards consolation from a dietician or athletic trainer!
Eat Healthier This resolution is an extension of the first. Switching to eating a healthier diet can be extremely difficult; especially after you’ve over-indulged in holiday meals and New Years drinks. However, with the right amount of determination and motivation, you can slowly develop better eating habits. The key is having the right mentality, and not cutting out everything from the get go. Cutting down on your coffee intake, or air frying your favorite foods, are all steps in the right direction. Just remember the tortoise beat the hare in the end!
Stop Procrastinating Procrastinating is one of the leading reasons that people miss out on opportunities and reaching their goals. This phenomenon has grown over the last year or so because of the pandemic. People are still in the “relax and getting things done eventually” mindset instead of working hard by putting in the time and effort. The sad thing is, once you get used to procrastinating, it’s difficult to snap yourself out of it, so a lot of work will go into fixing this bad habit. Our advice, is to start by making yourself daily, weekly, and even monthly to-do lists to keep yourself focused and on track. In doing so, you are on the right path to procrastination recovery!
Save Money
We can all agree that life is unpredictable. Because of that fact, it is important to gradually save. Whether it be for a rainy day fund, fixing up your house or car, or even to go on that tropical beach trip that you’ve been putting off, saving money will come in handy. In order to do so, keep a record of your expenses, budget for savings, find ways you can cut your spending, and set your savings goals. If you need additional help, reach out to a local financial advisor, or seek resources from the internet. Be More Social Embrace the New Year by stepping outside your comfort zone and be more social! Getting out and be more social has its own set of perks, and even some that many people don’t consider. For one, you get to step away from the constant 9-5 routine, and have some fun. You’ll be able to meet new people and learn interesting things about others and yourself. You can also develop socializing skills that might be beneficial in your professional life as well, such as leadership skills and the ability to work in team settings. Even if you are introverted, there are sure to be some extroverts in the crowd that will help break you out of your shell!
Learn A New Skill Or Hobby
After the relaxing holiday break, it’s time to get back into the swing of things. However, don’t just simply continue the same routine you followed in 2021, but spice things up instead. During your free time, pick up a new skill or hobby. Not only will this allow you to spend your free time constructively, but you will also have fun doing so. The first step is determining what interests you. Whether its expanding upon your communication skills, or learning a new sport, embracing a new skill or hobby will allow for some much needed personal growth!
Volunteer Or Give To A Charity
Even though the Season of Giving has passed, that does not mean there isn’t a need for non-profit support. Whether you volunteer once a week, or once a year, there is no measure to how fulfilling it is to give back to your community. There is a vast number of non-profit organizations and charities within the local Clarksville community and surrounding areas. The act of giving to those less fortunate is a noble gesture in itself, but you can also grow and develop as a person as well. Volunteering gives you the opportunity to interact with people you may have never come across in your normal life. Not only does this build your social interactions, but it also invests in the lives of others that may be less fortunate. You never know what new friendships you might make!
Set Goals And Stick To Them Setting goals for yourself and your business / carreer is so important. More often that not, if you dont have goals set then once the hustle and bustle of the new year starts you simply get caught up in your day to day life and it may feel as if you are plateauing.However, when you set your goals you want to make sure that they are challenging yet attainable as well. The last thing you want to do is become discouraged from goals that are unattainable.
Cultiv ate New Habit s As many have said in the past, Save the Best for Last. In this case, we’ve saved the most important resolution for last. We all know that resolutions are easy to put down on paper, but the most difficult task is sticking to them. You cannot achieve true self-improvement without truly adopting your new habits until they have become a natural part of who you are. The New Year is filled with endless possibilities; it is up to YOU to determine if you will make the change to positively affect your life.

By Kaitlan McLaughlin The Clarksville Police Department recently welcomed in a new initiative to its already extensive outreach program list. The initiative is officially named the Juvenile Engagement Team (J.E.T.), which is directly aimed to serve the juveniles within the Clarksville community. J.E.T. was introduced to the Clarksville Police Department through the Community Orientated Policing Services Office in 2020. This grant allowed the department to hire nine additional officers who are tasked to engage the juvenile community within Clarksville; which ties directly into both their mission statement and team goals. Their mission is to work citywide in the hopes of preventing juvenile crime and violence by building stronger relationships between local youth, law enforcement, and the community through positive interaction and engagement. J.E.T. Officer Tajee Moore explained, “I feel it is extremely important for me to give the youth all the tools I have learned growing up so they can be successful. I grew up in Clarksville, going to middle school and high school here, and I see that there are people I grew up with that were desperate for help and unable to receive it

as children. As adults, those same individuals are stuck in a never ending cycle of not actually pursuing what they dreamed of, and forced to live a life where they regret not chasing those dreams and goals they once had. I feel that it is my calling to build relationships with the children of our community and impress upon them that there is way more to life than what you see other adults doing. I am here and the J.E.T is here to help them reach their goals.” J.E.T. Officer MarShun Cox added, “We are interested in regularly meeting with youths and or juvenile offenders in our community suffering from substance abuse, mental health issues, behavioral or conduct problems and dealing with anger management. Reaching out to our various local facilities with Juvenile groups and clients seemed like a great idea to me. I want youths to be more comfortable with law enforcement and feel like they can rely on us no matter their situation, background, or what they’re dealing with in life.” W ith engagement plans and ideas already underway, J.E.T. aims to achieve set goals that are already in
place. Their three areas of focus are to reduce juvenile crime, recidivism in the court system, and victimizations. These goals were decided upon both as part of the, COPS grant that was granted to CPD by the Department of Justice, and the command staff of CPD. “Research has been done regarding the trends in Clarksville in reference to juvenile crime. It has become obvious that most juveniles involved in criminal activity are a victim of one crime or another before they are ever a suspect in a crime. It is upon the J.E.T. officers to reach out to these children that are victims at a young age and show them there are people in their community that care about them, there are people that want them to succeed and grow and be happy. This is what the J.E.T. team is all about, making the youth in Clarksville safer, happier and more successful overall,” J.E.T. Officer Colin Adair shared. Some might consider the task bestowed upon the Juvenile Engagement Team as an impossible feat. Not only are they starting from scratch, with a newly formed team and a new set of goals and mission to follow, but they are tasked with solving an ever-growing problem within the Clarksville community. However, the officers for the J.E.T. team were not only appointed, but they were selected based on set criteria and their willingness to serve the juvenile community. “I do believe that the youth is our future and that we as the older generation have to do our best to not only mold them but to support them and show them that this community is a place they want their future children to grow up. There was an interview process conducted by members of the command staff after which I was selected to be the team supervisor and the other officers were appointed,” Sergeant Arthur Bing, J.E.T. Supervisor explained. Officers within the J.E.T. team are eager to hit the ground running. Officer Anthony Rodriguez shared, “I want the readers to know that J.E.T. is here to make a difference and change the way the youth is being handled. We are excited to work with youth from all walks of life and we are all prepared for the challenges we may face moving forward. All that we ask is for the support of the community and the parents to help us reach out and influence these youth.”

5 New Year’s Resolutions for Your Home’s Electrical System Switch out Light Bulbs for Energy Efficient LEDs Although they initially cost more, LED Energy Star qualified bulbs end up paying for themselves in energy savings in about 10 years. They use 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs and last 35 to 50 times longer. Plus, they offer more peace of mind since they emit very little heat, decreasing the threat of an electrical fire, and are much more durable, so they won’t shatter all over the floor. They’re also guaranteed for three years minimum, which is above and beyond the industry standard, so you’ll save on maintenance costs as well as energy costs. Basically, there’s no excuse not to get them! Test Your Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) Outlets Did you know that you should do this every month? Not many consumers actually do this, but a new year is a great time to put this to practice and schedule it along with your other monthly home maintenance routines. You’ll find these outlets in moisture-prone areas such as the kitchen and bathroom as the current National Electrical Code requires. Simply press the test/reset button and make sure the outlets trip and resent correctly. If they are malfunctioning, call us to have them replaced to reduce electrocution risk. Replace the Batteries in Your Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors Replacing the batteries should be done at least once a year, and both of the detectors should be tested monthly to ensure proper functionality. And speaking of replacing, how old are your detectors? Remember that smoke detectors need to be replaced every 10 years. CLARKSVILLE AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE VETERAN-OWNED BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
By Kaitlan McLaughlin New to Clarksville’s growing list of locally-owned businesses is Tap House 57, a veteranowned, father and son business that represents two generations of local firefighters. Officially opening in late 2021, this newly established tap house is both innovative and awe-inspiring. Co-Owners, and father and son duo, Jeremy Baker and Joseph Baker stumbled upon the idea after traveling on a beer tour across the states. Joseph shared, “Our family visited a lot of different breweries when we would go on trips and weekend travels in Tennessee. The concept was to have a platform for local and regional breweries to have a place to showcase their beers. This concept encourages people in Clarksville to stay local and drink local. The number “57” comes from the bunker number I was issued when joining the Fort
Campbell Fire Department in January 1994. Bunker numbers were used for the accountability of firefighters and equipment. Once you’re issued a bunker number it never changes unless you leave the department.” Tap House 57 is unique in that it offers a firehouse theme, as well as local and regional craft beers. Jeremy discussed, “We have 16 taps that are all local and regional TN beers, again trying to showcase TN breweries. We are constantly rotating through different kegs, so the menu could be completely different each time a customer comes in. If a customer comes

in and doesn’t already know what they want to drink, our great staff will ask them what type of beers they like or normally drink, and then they will give recommendations besd on that information. We also have two double-door reach-in coolers that are reaching close to 150 different bottled and canned beers from all over the world. Every beer that we have is also available to go so that people may enjoy them at home.” Since its opening, Tap House 57 has been blown away by the response and support from the local Clarksville community. “The local response has been incredible,” says Jeremy. “Everyone that comes in has always told us that they loved it and will be telling their friends and coming back.” Jeremy goes on the say, “We are very family friendly so bring your wife, husband or kids along.” With games available to enjoy at the tables, TVs for watching the
game and now trivia on Wednesdays, Tap House 57 has certainly created a fun place to bring the whole family. Since joining the Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce, Tap. House 57 hopes to utilize the resources available from being a part of such a strong network. “We ultimately want to contribute to the Clarksville, military and veteran community and think we have cumulated just the right support system to do so.”

APSU’s Kris Phillips introduced and thanked the bookstores namesake, and talked about the University’s partnership with Barnes and Noble college bookstores. APSU President, Dr. Michael Licari said, “We’re so happy to see everyone here to cut the ribbon on the bookstore and celebrate the dedication of this beautiful mural. Ann Ross managed the APSU bookstore for 30 years. It’s named for her dedication to her work and to the university. “We are also proud that this new mural will provide a tie, a link between the university and the community which so faithfully supports our students faculty and staff.”

JUDGE SHARON MASSEY GRIMES ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY FOR GENERAL SESSIONS AND JUVENILE COURT, DIVISION III Judge Sharon Massey Grimes has announced her candidacy for Montgomery County General Sessions and Juvenile Court Judge, Division III. A gathering of family, friends and supporters was held recently to announce her intent to run. Judge Massey Grimes has held this position since January, 2021, when she was appointed by the Montgomery County Commission to complete the unexpired term of her late husband, Judge Ray Grimes, who passed away from COVID in November, 2020. Currently, she presides over Adult cases in General Sessions Criminal and Civil matters, Criminal and Civil matters in Juvenile Court, the Montgomery County Recovery Court, Juvenile Truancy Court and Order of Protection Court. She is currently the presiding Judge for the General Sessions and Juvenile Court in Montgomery County. Judge Massey Grimes is a graduate of Clarksville Academy, Austin Peay State University and the Nashville School of Law. She was a practicing attorney for 23 years prior to being appointed Judge. She has practiced in the Montgomery County Circuit and Chancery Courts, Tennessee Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of Tennessee. Judge Massey Grimes has served on the Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth and the Post Conviction Defender Commission. Judge Massey Grimes is a member of several professional organizations, including the Montgomery County Bar Association, Tennessee Bar Association, Tennessee Association of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, Tennessee General Sessions Judges Conference, Tennessee Association of Recovery Court Professionals, and is a fellow in the American Academy of Adoption and Reproductive Attorneys. She mentors students at the Nashville School of Law assisting them in advanced writing skills. Judge Massey Grimes and her late husband have 5 children and 6 grandchildren.

Lots of members, including me, have had family and friends affected by breast cancer. And, someone close and dear to all our hearts just recently battled and survived this disease.”

Montgomery County has the 2nd largest veteran population in the state. Montgomery County has the largest population of 100% disabled veterans. Future veteran population projections show our county having the largest veteran population within the decade. SALUTE to SERVICE FORT CAMPBELL USO
Since its inception in 1941, the USO has been known as the “nation’s leading organization” to serve both men and women in the US military, and their families, throughout their time in uniform. From the moment they fill-out the enlistment paperwork, to when they finish basic training, receive orders for deployment, and try to adapt back into their communities, the USO is there every step of the way. The USO at Fort Campbell has been an intricate part of the soldier community for ten years now (having celebrated its tenth birthday on 30 NOV 2021), and as the years have progressed, so has the involvement and adaptation of the organization itself. They provide countless programs and services in order to best meet the needs of any soldier/family dynamic. Executive Director, USO Fort Campbell and USO Nashville, Kari Moore explains, “The USO offers a reliable place to relax and connect. For Service Members, they know that they can always ‘ask the USO.’ While they are deployed, they know that we will support their family members back home. Since January of 2012, the USO Fort Campbell has provided a Warrior Wednesday lunch for soldiers. These lunches, sponsored by community businesses, organizations, and clubs, typically feed about 200 soldiers each week, and are considered a cornerstone in USO Fort Campbell programming. Our Pathfinder Transition Program connects transitioning service members and spouses at all points of the military journey with opportunities to meet goals in employment, education, financial readiness, mentorship, and increased access to relevant veterans’ benefits. This one-on-one service creates personalized action plans to help clients navigate the steps to success.” The USO is a non-profit organization separate from the federal government; meaning it’s a private entity. The organization itself was congressionally chartered and relies heavily on the generosity of individuals, organizations and corporations to support its activities, and is powered by a family of volunteers to accomplish its mission of connection. However, the USO Fort Campbell currently has a need for volunteers. The COVID-19 pandemic closed the center for a few months, and the organization has had a hard time rebuilding the volunteer force in its wake. Moore remarks, “At this time, our biggest need in order to deliver our mission effectively is center volunteers. The mission of the USO is to strengthen America’s military service members by keeping them connected to family, home, and country 42 • FOLLOW US ON FACEBOOK TO STAY UP TO DATE ON EVENTS IN CLARKSVILLE
throughout their service to the nation. Our center volunteers are a critical piece to delivering the day-to-day amenities to service members and their families. At USO Fort Campbell, those center volunteers might be welcoming guests at the front desk, offering a snack and beverage, serving meals, tidying up, checking out computers, or assisting with programs. We also need volunteers to staff the fitness center and to help us deliver Late Night USO.” Moore adds, “The gap currently is center volunteers, so the staff - our Center Operations Supervisor, in particular - are working long days to make sure that we can stay open some days. It’s important to find volunteers because this incredible USO mission is truly only effective when volunteers are supporting the center operation. We only have four paid Operations staff that deliver the USO mission throughout Tennessee and most of Kentucky. Delivering our mission to those ‘white spaces’ often takes staff out of the center and sometimes across the state. We can do so much more when volunteers are delivering the mission in the center.” Whether it’s once every week, or once every three months, any time spent volunteering alongside the USO would be valued and appreciated. Treva Gordon recently presented LOSS (Lending Our Shared Stories), to a packed house at The Roxy Regional Theatre. Gordon shared her story – “Rise”, saying, “That’s my story as a widow. I wanted to share my experience and my truth, which was that I was heartbroken. But, God elevated me and helped me. I wanted to share the message that when we give it to God. He will help us through.” Gordon’s daughter opened the show with the song Rise by Andra Day. Johnny Collier, Vice President, National Federation of the Blind was presented the Pastor Robert E. Alex Stewart, Senior Development Manager with the American Cancer Society shared her thoughts, “Montgomery County Relay For Life has been doing this for more than twenty years, but we’re restarting post Covid-19. This is our first in-person event in two years. Last year was a drive-thru event. Stewart thinks it will take a year or two to get back to where they were. “We’re looking for volunteers and committee members to help us bring it back to its former glory. Guests enjoyed an evening of dinner, dancing, and live music. “This is the 65th year for Clarksville Montgomery County NAACP Chapter 5582,” President Jimmie Garland said. “Bishop Anthony Alfred is our distinguished guest speaker tonight, and it is going to be a celebration of what this organization does in this community.”

Roxy Regional Theatre recently presented Freedom Train, the story of Harriet Tubman and her escape through what came to be known as the Underground Railroad and led to her becoming one of its most celebrated “conductors.”

Montgomery County residents were invited to ‘come on out for the beverages, the band, and the BBQ’, and meet Wes Golden, candidate for Montgomery County Mayor. He announced his intention to run in the 2022 Montgomery County Mayor’s race in April of this year. Golden currently holds the office of Health and Safety manager for the City of Clarksville. The event was held at the Charles Hand ‘Bud Barn’ in Cedar Hill, Tennessee. Food was prepared and served by Nicoletta’s Catering, and Syd Hedrick’s band provided live music for the evening’s festivities.

Beatrice and Darrell, a German band from Destin, Florida, is back with is for the third year and sounds great.”

Walk for Life PHOTOGRAPHY AND STORY BY TONY CENTONZE Hope Pregnancy Center recently hosted its annual Walk for Life at Liberty Park. “We are out here raising money and awareness today,” Janya Barnes said. “We have a lot of families here today who chose life, and we get to celebrate with them. We also have a lot of donors who come out and walk with us. It’s just a great way for us to spend the day with our families and friends. “We want everyone to know that there is always a choice. There is so much we can do, and provide, for them. It’s not just about the tests we run, it’s about so much more. We are able to help about 600 people each year. That includes taking care of them at our boutique, which provides diapers and formula, and all kinds of things while they’re getting started.”

I cater events, and I also set up and sell products and personal boxes at Beachaven W inery every weekend.”

Trish Hanna, founder of CADS (Clarksville Association for Down Syndrome) was surrounded by friends and volunteers at this year’s Mr. & Mrs. Claus and Friends. A drive by Santa meet and greet for the special needs community. “The community really came out to support us,” Hanna said. Gift bags were available for all individuals with special needs. Joining Hanna were several APSU cheerleaders, members of Clarksville Fire Rescue and the Clarksville Police Department. Santa and Mrs. Claus were accompanied by the Grinch, some reindeer and a host of other characters.
