the meaning
Ngā hau e whā is translated to mean ‘The Four Winds’. This concept literally means North, South, East, West. At Arrowtown School it also means inclusiveness and the bringing together of all people to our place – our school.
We include everyone at our school and acknowledge all cultural heritages and whakapapa (family backgrounds) that make up our school. This is a place where you can come and be welcomed and acknowledged.
farewell to chris, opening & matariki
Chris Bryant has been the principal at Arrowtown School for 9 years. He is committed to all things Māori and was involved in the design of the school's new Ngā Hau e Whā area that was part of the schools rebuild. The school had planned to officially open this area last year, however, it was cancelled due to a power cut and COVID-19 on the day!
Every year at Kāmuriwai they celebrate Matariki. Matariki is a time to acknowledge and celebrate people, to reflect, to thank others and set goals for the future. This year Matariki was celebrated by opening the Ngā Hau e Whā area with the whole school, staff, the communities Kaumatua Matua Darren and Matua Ned, plus past key whānau members who were drivers of Te Ao Māori and Kapa Haka at Kāmuriwai. The senior kapa haka roopu performed to conclude the opening of this area. At this special celebration, they acknowledged the mahi and dedication of their outgoing principal; Chris Bryant. The mana he has as their tumuaki for the past 9 years was acknowledged at a special farewell assembly. The students all contributed to this event and Toni Monk and Tim Young spoke on behalf of the BoT and principals.
The Ngā Hau e Whā area has a permanent hāngi pit and the school celebrated with a hāngi. Year 7 & 8 Senior Students helped prepare the food. Year 3 & 4 kapa haka performed at the lifting of the hāngi. Each student in the school got to try a hāngi potato, and the adults had a hāngi meal.
Special thanks to some key community members that helped make the hāngi happen - Tipu Kopa, Shaun Fa'amalepe, and Pete Sinclair, plus a lot of other helpers on the day.

air pollution
Whilst Arrowtown is known for its beautifully preserved historic, aesthetic, it’s autumn colour and stunning natural surroundings, it is also has a less favourable reputation, that of winter air pollution caused by inefficient wood burners and unsuitable firewood.
Being nestled against Tobins face as we are, our geography prevents smoke from clearing effectively and instead it settles, particularly to the east, below Devon Street and over the river. You need only step outside for a moment or welcome your cat in from the evening cold, to sense the linger of smoke on your clothes and their fur.
The data also backs up what we can all sense around us, PM10 smoke particles peak overnight which indicates home heating is the major cause. PM10 particles are smaller than 10 micrometers (µm) in diameter and can result in a number of health impacts including respiratory diseases, heart attacks, and lung cancer. PM10 levels ≥50 µg/m³ on a 24-hour average breach National standards, which in June was exceeded on 8 days in Arrowtown. Exceeding these levels has been a regular occurrence in Arrowtown for many years.
What can you do?
To help lower PM10 particles, firewood must be dry and burned hot without smouldering. For information on firewood storage and use visit www.orc.govt.nz/bdbe. AVA also has wood moisture meters which can be borrowed for a $20 returnable deposit, please contact chairperson@arrowtownvillage.nz to check your wood pile. Please inform your neighbours if you regularly see smoke coming from their chimney’s or you can report excessive pollution to pollution@orc.govt. nz / 0800800033.

tewa banks update
Everything is moving ahead on the Tewa Banks project, off Jopp Street. Civil Works commenced this week. Therma are halfway through the drilling of the Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) bores and expect to complete the boring in August. We're received a lot of interest on this innovative and sustainable heating/ cooling system, and will be carrying out a comprehensive case study on it at a later date. This will include capital outlay along with cost benefits to residents by tracking a number of households power bills for 12 months to understand the value of the system. The first building stages comprising 13 homes of 6 x 1-bed units at the front of Jopp St are earmarked for Senior Housing as there has been an increase in enquiries from Senior locals who will qualify for these homes. House construction due to begin in September with the first homes due for completion early next year.

tracking to a predator free arrowtown
Here is an update on how the year has been going so far. See the graph showing the catch numbers since the beginning of the year - we are up to 601 predators removed so far. Awesome work to all involved. The AT220 project that Southern Lakes Sanctuary are running up Bush Creek are now up to 609 possums since the traps were installed last August, as well as these possums another 257 "unspecified" pests were also removed - likely mice and rats. We did see one stoat caught by an AT220 so far.
Some mouse activity in the beech forest up Bush Creek. There was less activity than usual on the cards, which is great news.
