te tupua: the goblin

Experience a visit from a ghost as history comes to life! Te Tupua–The Goblin is on Tuesday 21 May at the Athenaeum Hall at 7.30 pm.

Te Tupua–The Goblin tells the tale of a disenfranchised child, a shipwrecked sailor, a slave, a tattooed freak.

A Scottish lad of 10 is driven into slavery aboard His Majesty’s ships, circa 1800. After 15 years at sea, he is cast onto the shoreline of Aotearoa. The fight for survival begins.

Te Tupua – The Goblin is a solo play written and performed by John G Davies. Te Tupua deals with atonement concerning bicultural New Zealand and the hidden trauma of our shared violent history.

Early 19th century in Aotearoa was a dynamic time. Māori were becoming aware they were no longer alone, and that other races from the north were coming. Pākehā who lived here at that time forged an existence on Māori terms. The recorded experiences are vivid and fraught with danger, yet these stories reveal deep alliances, friendships, marriages, and hard-won loyalties.

This play, performed very simply with three props and a whole heap of energy, evokes a traditional storyteller from the days of the communal fire. John explains, “When I go out into that space, the stage, I feel connected to all the ancient storytellers, to the people who imitate, embody, project, and summon their life force to engage their audience. That’s me, I’m one of those.”

Tickets are $25, available from humanitix.

arrowtown business & resident update

Buckingham Street - Why is the road being closed?

Buckingham Street will be closed from Monday 6th May till the end of Monday 13th May inclusive. The road is being closed to implement safety measures that were identified due to several concerns raised by neighbouring residents and businesses.

The safety works include installing a raised surface treatment change made of schist and exposed aggregate at the entrance to Buckingham Street to indicate to road users they are entering a high pedestrian area and to proceed with caution, it will also act as a natural pedestrian crossing. The materials were chosen as they remain in keeping with the Arrowtown Design Guidelines.

on the main street with oversized vehicles hitting and damaging them, resulting in costly repairs and leaking water into their premises due to broken downpipes.

There will also be the installation of four new bike racks, replacing four car parks, one each outside the Bakery and Postmasters Kitchen & Bar. The double installation, to be situated in the centre of the street outside the Gold Shop, has been identified to help mitigate the significant issue that several of our businesses with awnings have

Three of the bike racks are planter boxes for up to 15 bikes and are a co-funded arrangement with APBA and QLDC. These planter box bike racks were designed by Baxter Design, built by Arrowtown Engineering and will be filled with white carpet roses making a stunning display from Spring to Autumn down the main street and will be maintained by APBA, thanks to fabulous local Arrowtown residents.

These are all positive safety improvements, which we welcome as they remain in keeping with our town and protection of its historic roots whilst understanding it is still a busy working village.

During the road closure all our businesses are open as usual and look forward to continuing to welcome you to their shops. We understand this will be a significant disruption whilst the work is being undertaken and have been advised the extra few days of road closure is due to the

curing of the concrete as it was arranged for outside the busy period, lengthening the duration for this to happen, due to our weather conditions at this time of year.

HAVE YOUR SAY ON THE FUTURE OF BUCKINGHAM STREET

Whilst the road is closed, APBA and AVA worked with QLDC to utilize the opportunity to undertake a survey, targeting locals, businesses and visitors’ thoughts and feedback on how they would like to see Buckingham Street in the future, outlining priorities and how the space could be utilized.

With no decisions made, the APBA & AVA are supporting the survey to help promote the democratic right to provide feedback and help influence any future decision (which might be to keep it exactly the same) so whatever the outcome it is the right one for our beautiful town. We encourage everyone in Arrowtown to take part and complete this survey which closes on Sunday 19th May. You can also read more information and FAQs on the work being undertaken https://bit.ly/buckingham-street

a magical autumn festival

Arrowtown was full of colour, creativity and magic as it shone over Anzac weekend. Over 20,000 locals and visitors flocked into town to enjoy the 38th Arrowtown Autumn Festival. The action-packed programme had something for everyone with 48 events over four days.

Saturday’s market and parade day was a hit with talented local entertainers on the main stage all day, ranging from pipe bands, dance troupes, primary and high school musicians and the living options crew. There was plenty of action on the streets with Remarkable Theatre performers, Flame’s fabulous entertainers, circus shows, Mulletman & Mim, skate lessons, facepainters and of course the delicious food vendors and arts and crafts market. The Parade was a highlight with a range of colourful characters and floats, with the best community float awarded to the Arrowtown Preschool followed by the Arrowtown Horticultural Society.

The Art Exhibition was one of the best ever, with the special ‘Unsung Hero Award’ presented to Russell Heckler for his significant contribution to the community.

Lead partner Mora Wines & Artisan Kitchen hosted two delicious culinary events. And of course the Pie, Pint and Pinot did not disappoint, a fabulous afternoon in the sun with a range of delicious pies, craft beer, wine and great entertainment.

A big thank you to our Skyline Volunteer Crew, committee, partners, local businesses and the Arrowtown community for their support. The festival is truly community spirit at its best! See you next year – 24-27 April 2025.
