Rainhill Gala 2013 27th May 2013 -11:30am St Ann’s School Field, View Road Hi everyone and thanks for picking up this years Rainhill Gala programme. We think that this year’s event is going to be the best ever with bigger and better attractions. This year the Army will be coming down and putting our locals through their paces, don’t come dressed to impress as you may get wet and muddy, there’s also going to be a paintball range, climbing wall and full size archery range in addition to our usual attractions. We’re really excited about our toddlers area where the under 5’s can enjoy soft play near to our traditional kids funfair. There’s lots for all the family with a fun packed arena with dance and song shows as well as a free Zumba class for everyone to join in with. We are really grateful to all of our supporters who look after us year after year, there’s our local partners including the Parish Council, Rotary Club and Model Railway Club as well as bigger organisations such as Arriva, Bridge Barbers Bramall Construction and Steve Caunce Drainage Solutions. Without the generosity of these organisations the Gala would simply not exist.

So what have we been up to? Well after last year’s event we gave £8,000 of your money to local groups and organisations including our main beneficiary Willowbrook Hospice. In our programme you will find details of the 13 other organisations that received help. We hope that again this year we will be in a position to help more organisations with their valuable work in our community. We also held our fourth annual barn dance at the Village Hall where over 120 people came down and enjoyed the live music, food and refreshments put on by our group of volunteers. We are still proud to say that all the work done by our committee is on a voluntary basis and we keep our spending to an absolute minimum so as to keep our giving to an absolute maximum! I hope that you can come to this year’s Gala, if you can’t and you want to support us then please do enter our Grand Raffle with the chance to win our top prize of £250 in cash. Thank you for reading our programme and if you contact any of the advertisers in our programme that you mention you saw it here. Steve Clarke, Chairman, Rainhill Gala

Who are Rainhill Gala? Well we’re a bunch of volunteers that have chosen to try and make a difference to the community of Rainhill. We rely on the support of the community and we hope that what we do makes a difference. We hold two main events, the Gala and the annual barn dance in April. This year 120 people enjoyed a fabulous evening in the village hall, don’t miss out next year look out for the tickets going on sale in February, find details on our website and on our Facebook page. Since we started in our current format in 2007 we have raised over £25,000 for local charities and good causes in and around the Rainhill area. Take a look in our Hospitality Tent on Gala day for details of who we have supported over the last 6 years. In addition to the funds raised directly from the Galas we have allowed dozens of local groups to promote themselves as well as raise their own funds. In turn we believe that this has benefitted hundreds of local people and we are always on the lookout for new ways to support more people in our community. This year we are delighted to be a part of the new eco-garden project in Exchange Place. If you’re not familiar with the project, see the stall at the Gala for more details. Our committee is made up from many different sectors of the community, obviously we are eternally grateful to the ladies at the Bridge Barbers (Julie, Becci & Ann) who put so much into the Gala. Without them the event would look nothing like it does now! We are also delighted to have the support of Rainhill Rotary who ran Briars Hey Gala until it ended in 2000. They also hold the same community values as we do and run an extremely successful Beer Festival every November. The guys from Rainhill Rotary now run the Beer Tent at the Gala as well as help us set up the Gala. We also have the support of members from the Model Railway Club, Railway & Heritage Society and many other individual members who make up our committee. We love putting on our events every year but we do need your input, please do let us know what we can do to improve the experience and if you want to join us you would be made more than welcome. Contact us through our website or Facebook page or come and see us on Gala day. Rainhill Gala support Homewatch Initiative Rainhill Gala was approached last year by St Helens Homewatch for funding support to provide purse chains for local residents. We were delighted to support this great cause with an award of £200 which they used to purchase items to prevent purse theft. The simple but effective chains enable people to ‘chain’ their purse to their bag/belt/jacket so that in the event of a purse snatch they assailant will be unable to take the purse away. The group also purchased small bells which attach to purses to alert the owner of a purse or wallet to be aware that this may have been dropped. This is particularly useful for the elderly or hard of hearing. The award from Rainhill Gala has enabled the group to give these devices to members of the local community for free and the group’s Graham and Matt are pictured right giving one of the devices to a member of our community outside the Co-Op store in Rainhill. In total the group handed out 500 devices to local people and wasted no time in getting into action arranging a hand-out date just weeks after receiving the award. If you want to know more then come and see them at the Gala. SPECIAL AWARD FOR GRAHAM Graham Trubshaw, Treasurer of St Helens Homewatch, received an award recently from the Area Commander and High Sherriff of Merseyside in recognition of his voluntary work. He collected the Volunteer of the Year award for the funds he has raised that has enabled initiatives to take place such as the one featured above, well done Graham!

2013 programme competition This year we tasked the Brownies and Cubs from the Rainhill troupes to create the poster for the front cover of this year’s Rainhill Gala programme and the winner is Isabella Porter from the 5th Rainhill Brownies (pictured right). Isabella’s poster is on the front of this programme and will appear in the village on the approach to the Gala. This year’s posters have been designed to complement our Treasure Hunt, find details on page 42 where you can enter the competition to win a special prize. The Rainhill Gala committee found it really hard to choose a winner from all the fantastic entries, however they felt that Isabella’s was colourful and represented the Treasure Hunt theme perfectly. The first runners up place went to Joy Bowden from the 2nd Rainhill Brownies whose picture is shown top left. Well done Joy! The second runner up was Niamh Hay from 5th Rainhill Brownies with her picture which highlighted Rainhill Gala 2013 which is shown right, well done Niamh. All three winners will receive a prize as well as a free wristband for the Gala where they can enjoy all day fun on the funfair i t e ms at the Gala. Wristbands are available from the stand as you enter the Gala, get them as you enter so you can jump straight onto the fair!

Rainhill Rotary Club Beer Festival A total of 2000 ladies and gentlemen attended our 10th Beer Festival last November. Significantly improved tented accommodation in which 100 beers and a wide choice of lager and cider were available, ensured a brilliant, social success. At our ‘Dragons’ Den’ evening last month, a large number of local charities were recipients of a significant proportion of profits from the event. The sale of alcohol at the Festival does not in itself generate profit over associated costs. The event relies heavily on the generosity of our sponsors. They are individually invited to contribute £100. For this donation the sponsor receives 4 free-entry tickets, advertising both on our Festival website and also in the professionally produced programme, with name and company against a particular beer. Many of our sponsors have been with us for all eleven years. They continue to be most generous and we thank them sincerely. For 2013 we are keen to discuss with any interested party, a role as major sponsor for what we know will be an even bigger and better event than in previous years.

Anyone who might be interested in joining Rainhill Rotary Club with its 48 members or supporting our Beer Festival in any way, please contact Andrew on 07767 693800

Award update - 5th St Helens Scouts - 2012 award of £500 The 5th St Helens (Rainhill Open) Group has been in existence since 1964. As an Open Group we are not attached to any governing body or church and, therefore, have to raise all our own funds to heat, light, insure and maintain the building and all equipment required for camping and more. Currently we are running all three sections with one Beaver Colony - Lakes (ages 6-8), two Cub Packs - Phoenix and Rocket (8-10½) and a Scout Troop (10½-14) which re-opened in September 2012. The £500 awarded to us by the gala committee was very much appreciated and needed towards the cost of replacing the security fence to enable a safe environment for our members to enjoy. On behalf of the Group I would like to thank everyone involved with Gala for the hard work they put in to make the event a great success and raising funds for groups in the community. 18

The 2012 Rainhill Gala Awards Held in September, the 2012 Award Ceremony was more special than ever due to the fact that we made more cash awards than any other year, in total 12 awards were made. In 2012 we raised a total of £8,000, of this half was awarded to Willowbrook Hospice to help them continue the valuable work they do day in day out, the remaining cash was awarded to good causes in and around the Rainhill area. The awards in 2012 were: Willowbrook Hospice - £4,000 - Willowbrook help people suffering from a range of illnesses and support their families and caraers, visit their website, www.willowbrook.org.uk 5th St. Helens (Rainhill) Scouts - £500 - The funds helped this troupe to repair the security fence at their hut in Rainhill, see page 18 for more details on how this award helped this group. The Caterpillar Club - £500 - This voluntary group supports disabled children and their families at a weekly meeting at the Rainhill Play Centre, see page 31 for more details. Rainhill Senior Citizens Luncheon Club - £500 - This group meets weekly in the village hall and is sometimes the only opportunity some of Rainhill’s residents have to socialise. JEM XTREME - £500 - This St Helens based group helps young people to compete in national cheerleading competitions. They will be appearing at the Gala, come and see them, they’re great! Hargreaves Dementia Trust - £500 - Former Mayor of St Helens Tom Hargreaves set up this trust in 2012 and we were delighted to boost its start up costs with an award of £500. This organisation provides support for the families of people suffering from dementia Rainhill Musical Theatre Company - £350 - This group focuses a great deal of time supporting the youth of the Rainhill community developing their artistic talents, this award helped them to buy equipment for performances in the Village Hall, come and see them in the Gala arena this year! Rainhill St. Anns Mums & Tots - £300 - This group provides support for new mums in the Millennium Centre every week. This helps new mums to gain information and support to help them with motherhood. This also helps the children to develop social skills by mixing with new children. Rainhill Railway & Heritage - £200 - This group preserves the history of railway in Rainhill. This award helped the group launch a new website, rainhilltrials.com, visit them today and see their virtual museum. Rainhill is world renownd for its railway connections and this website further enforces this. St. Helens Homewatch - £ 200 - This award was used to provide free purse chains and bells for people in our community, see page 4 for more details of how this money was used. F.L.A.P. - £200 - Facing Life And Pain are a Whiston based group who provide support for people who suffer chronic pain. Many of their group members live in the Rainhill and Whiston areas. Rainhill Rocket Junior Football Club - £150 - This non-profit group enables young people to engage in sport and enter competitions boosting confidence and increasing physical activity.

Our Thanks To Jimmy We would like to say a big thank you to Jimmy who provided the entertainment for our awards night last September. Oakwood Pre School

Playgroup welcomes all children aged 2 to 5 years through their doors during 8am to 3pm in school terms. We are now happily playing, investigating and learning in the Scout Hut on Old Lane, Rainhill enjoying all the areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage both indoors and outdoors. The children recently enjoyed a visit from Barn Owl Bill and his owls with all the children bravely holding the Tawney Owl and stroking the others. Even the parents & carers had the chance to do the same at the end of the session when collecting their children. We are looking forward to meeting the chicks that hatched in pre-school in October when they visited from Acorn Venture Farm during the summer term. The younger children delivered their harvest gifts to the residents in Trent Place while the older group entertained the residents of Ranleigh Grange with their favourite songs and harvest baskets. Did you come along to our scarecrow festival on the Scout Hut grounds where 40+ scarecrows made by the children, nurseries, businesses and residential homes from Rainhill Village stood proud? Well done to all that took part! Later in the term we were so excited to meet Father Christmas when he visited our Christmas Fair and Grotto. Then he also joined us for lunch in a local pub and replied to our letters that we had sent to Lapland. The older children performed in Christmas outfits for the residents of Ranleigh Grange while the younger children joined the Luncheon Club Christmas party in the Village Hall giving a small present to everyone. There were lots of superheroes and princesses in the building during World Book Day and some of the children joined Rocklands Day Nursery Pre-School rooms Superhero Play Day. You will regularly see us around the village shops, parks and joining in with story time at Rainhill Library. If you would like your child to join in our fun then please contact Diane on 07768 063 564 or call in and see us in the Scout Hut on Old Lane, Rainhill.

Rainhill Gala Committee recognised by St Helens Mayor Before the end of his term in May 2012, Cllr Tom Hargreaves, The Mayor of the Borough of St Helens invited the Rainhill Gala committee to an evening reception in his parlour at the Town Hall in St Helens. We were of course touched to be recognised by the Town’s Mayor and accepted the invitation. Inside the parlour we were shown some of the gifts that had been given by Mayors and leaders from other towns when they had visited throughout the years. Take a look on our Facebook page where you can see more pictures from the evening. We were of course delighted to have been asked and also delighted in the fact that we were introduced to the Hargreaves Dementia Trust which we were able to support in 2012 with an award of £500. IMPORTANT EVENT SAFETY Whilst we make every effort to ensure the safety of your children, the Rainhill Gala is a public event and as such we would ask that you ensure the safety of your children by supervising them at all times and not allowing them in restricted areas marked with tape or barriers. Please look for the lost children meeting point on site when you arrive which will be ‘Gala Hospitality Stall’ and make your child aware of what to do if you lose each other. Tell them not to panic and look for a Gala steward wearing a Hi-Visabilty vest, police officer or security personnel.

SHOP LOCAL IN RAINHILL Did you know that your local village shops often offer better quality and value than the big out of town supermarkets? Our village has virtually everything you need for day to day living. We know times are changing and the convenience of a one-stop shop is appealing however shopping local is great for our village and you can always get great advice from people who care.

Why shop in your village? Firstly lets look at the cost. We took a snap shot survey of a number of items found in various shops across the village including Longsters, Hayes Traditional Butcher, The Fruit Shop and Nicolas in Dane Court. We found that ALL of the items were cheaper in Rainhill than in one of the nearby big supermarkets. These items were not something weird and wonderful, just everyday items like bacon, apples, washing up liquid and soap. Not to mention that the Tony at Hayes Traditional Butcher can tell you where your meat has come from, can the big supermarket do this? So what about the convenience. Many local shops now accept Chip & Pin cards and there is a FREE cash machine in the Co-Op. Did you know that you can use the Post Office as a bank? Have a look at the Post Office’s website to see if you can use this service. Also have you thought of the cost of driving to the Supermarket? If you drive to Huyton, this is a 10 mile round trip, with petrol is now £6.14p per gallon, have you factored this cost into your shop?

Support the campaign! Have you ever heard the saying use it or lose it? Well this is the case here. Even if you change your shopping habits and use your local shops once a week, this will enable them to keep going. Remember that there are lots of people in our community who cannot get to the big supermarket and rely on our local shops, could this be you one day? Visit your local shops this week and see what’s in store. *Comparisons correct 20 April 2013 made via www.mysupermarket.co.uk and fuel price at www.theaa.com

RAINHILL PLAY CENTRE (FORMALLY THE 4F CENTRE, OLD LANE) As most residents may know the centre has changed over the last couple of years and has been passed back from Barnardo’s to the Parish Council. The centre is a really great resource and has lots of potential to support the children and young people of the area. The centre has an ethos of inclusivity and can easily accommodate disabled children/young people due to previous funding support. The centre is now running more in line of a community centre and there is now a management group consisting of local councilors, local residents, parents of disabled children, user groups and St Helens council and youth services representatives. It is the main day to day office base for Calder Breaks who provide support to disabled children/young people and Adults who also oversee some of the day to day running of the centre. Other user groups are Parents of disabled children, Kids Zumba classes, MATCH dads and kids group, A special school, St Helens council youth and play services. The management group wants to expand both the use of and the range of children’s activities available which run from the centre. It is looking for partners, contributions, additional management members or anyone who has an interest to get involved. The centre can also be booked for a range of children’s focused activities from children parties, play sessions etc at very reasonable costs. Details can be found on the Rainhill Parish Council website and picture of both the inside or outside can be found on Calder Breaks web site. Anyone interested in booking the centre or helping support the centre can pay a visit to view the facilities. If you are interested have any ideas or can help in any way then get in touch.

Rainhill Play Centre users benefit from Gala award The Caterpillar Club is a voluntary group who use the Rainhill Play Centre to support 14 families who have children with disabilities of varying degrees. The Club allows the parents and carers to get together on a weekly basis to discuss their issues and allow their children to play in a safe environment. The families that benefit from the Club come from areas across St Helens and formed the Club when Barnardo’s left the centre. Pictured left are the children from the Catterpillar Club enjoying their Christmas party in 2012.

Can we help your organisation? Last year we donated £4,000 to local groups in and around Rainhill. We were pleased that the money went to groups that meant a wide range of people benefitted from Gala cash. You can find details of all the recipients on our website and there are several features throughout this programme detailing what the funds have been spent on. We are delighted to retain Willowbrook Hospice as our main beneficiary and the remainder of the funds raised this year will go to local groups and charities in and around the Rainhill area. We aim to award money to groups in and around Rainhill who may find it difficult to find funding elsewhere. We don’t have the same criteria as some funding providers, the dreaded 30 page form, nor do we discriminate either. We do however insist that for a group to be eligible, that the entrance or joining requirements are not overly restricted and that the group operates in the interest of many people. Pictured below is some of the crew from JEM XTREME who in 2012 received an award of £500 towards the costs of competing in national cheerleading competitions, come and see them in the arena this year, as this benefits many young people, we considered this to be a worthwhile cause. We don’t know how much we will be able to award this year, if anything, however any surplus funds will be divided between Willowbrook and local causes. If you would like to apply for funding, please apply by sending an email to funding@rainhillgala.co.uk giving as much detail as you can about your organisation. We will then email you by the closing date of 1st July 2013 to let you know if we will be looking further into your application. We will of course need to verify your group and someone from Rainhill Gala will need to come along to one of your group meetings. Terms and conditions apply, these are available on our website and we promise to reply to all applicants.

Special thanks to our friends at Golden Triangle Power Generation for supplying the power for the Rainhill Gala 2013

RAINHILL MODEL RAILWAY CLUB Rainhill Model Railway club was founded in 1995 and from an initial twenty one people who attended the inaugural meeting in St. Ann’s Parish Rooms. The membership has now grown to fifty, and we have a waiting list. The club meets on three evenings a week in designated clubrooms and the members are busy constructing a number of layouts in gauges from N (1:160) to G (Garden Railway size), as well as working on personal projects. The club holds two exhibitions a year, one a family show at Christmas time with Santa as an honoured guest, and a main show held over two days on the first weekend in March. Both these events take place in the Rainhill Village Hall. In addition to our own exhibitions the club attends other events put on by model railway clubs and organisations all over the North of England and Wales. Since inception the club has supported many charities, such as Willowbrook Hospice, NCH, and Rainhill Guides to name but three. The members see the club as an essential part of the Village scene and are proud to be part of the Rainhill Gala organisation. More information on the club and contact details may be found on the club web site – www.rainhillmrc.org.uk 36

The 2013 Rainhill Gala Barn Dance It’s turning out to be the biggest event in the Rainhill calendar (other than the Gala that is). The 2013 barn dance was a compete sell out and 120 dancers gathered in the Village Hall in April to dance the night away. For the second year running Two Left Feet played and caller Brendon taught the steps. A great night was had by all and there’s even calls for a second event during the year. Have your say on our Facebook page (facebook.com/rainhillgala). Look out for the 2014 Barn Dance tickets going on sale in February. Details will be on our website and Facebook page. Thanks to everyone who came, find more pictures from the night online.

We need help putting up gazebo’s, setting up stalls, putting barriers around the site, even making sure that there’s toilet paper in the loos!!! If you think you could help then please call Steve on 07951 324 599 or call into the Bridge Barbers and speak to Ann, Julie or Becci, otherwise come and see us on Sunday 26th from 11am on site.
