Hello and thanks for picking up the 2018 copy of the Rainhill Gala programme, I really hope that you find lots of useful contacts, local information and features inside. Most of the ads are placed by local trades and businesses so why not keep your copy for later in the year, it’s like a yellow pages but with more colour!!! Featuring the ads in the programme means we can raise enough money to ensure we can run the Gala even if it rains.

Once again the Rainhill Gala Committee were lucky enough to be nominated for the Co-op local community fund last year and were delighted to receive a cheque for £2,134 along with other recipients, Rainhill Civic Society and Rainhill Old Peoples Welfare. The Rainhill Gala Committee would like to say a really special thanks to Dave Ford and the members of Blundells Hill Golf Club for their generosity in 2017. During his year as Captain of the Club, Dave nominated Rainhill Gala as the Captain’s Charity and as a result we picked up a cheque for £2,000! RAINHILL MODEL RAILWAY CLUB Rainhill Model Railway club was founded in 1995 and from an initial twenty one people who attended the inaugural meeting in St. Ann’s Parish Rooms. The club meets on two evenings a week in designated clubrooms and the members are busy constructing a number of layouts in gauges from N (1:160) to G (Garden Railway size), as well as working on personal projects. The club holds two exhibitions a year, one a family show at Christmas time with Santa as an honoured guest, and a main show held over two days on the first weekend in March. Both these events take place in the Rainhill Village Hall. In addition to our own exhibitions the club attends other events put on by model railway clubs and organisations all over the North of England and Wales. Since inception the club has supported many charities, such as Willowbrook Hospice, NCH, and Rainhill Guides to name but three. The members see the club as an essential part of the Village scene and are proud to be part of the Rainhill Gala organisation.

Rocket 190 It’s full steam ahead with the planning for the 190 th anniversary of the 1829 Rainhill Railway engine trials in 2019. The “Rainhill Trials” carved a permanent place for our village in World transport history as the global birthplace of intercity passenger railways. Rainhill Parish Council and the Rainhill Railway and Heritage Society are working together with the Gala Committee, Rotary, the Civic Society and many other local organisations to make these celebrations really special. Precise details and timings are still being finalised. We are negotiating with the National Railway Museum to hire the full sized Rocket for a parade and display on Sunday 26 th May 2019. Other proposals are a model railway exhibition, a Village street party after the parade, themed theatrical and musical performances, a sports tournament and a period costume weekend leading up to the Gala itself on 27 th May 2019. We are particularly keen to make sure these celebrations include opportunities for residents of all ages. So if you want to play your part in making Rainhill’s history, please contact the Parish Clerk on rainhillpc@hotmail.co.uk.

Rainhill Probus Club

Rainhill and Prescot Probus Club is a long established organisation with meets monthly to provide a social interest for retired menfolk. Probus is a national organisation with defined objectives but individual clubs are autonomous. We are run by a Committee of 10 elected members with a President being elected annually. We see ourselves as the male equivalent of the Womens Institute. We meet on the fourth Tuesday in the month currently in the Millennium Centre having relocated there when the Rockland Hotel closed. Our current membership is approximately 50. We are strictly non-profit making the only charges made are to cover cost of meals, accommodation, administration and speaker charges - all our accounts are audited annually. Our meetings begin at 1pm and commence with a hot meal. After any administrative business the guest speaker is introduced who will speak in the order of 1 hour followed by questions and a vote of thanks which normally concludes the meeting at around 3pm. Speakers are selected to cover a very wide range of subjects, some entertaining and some of a more serious nature the aim being to provide a balance between external and member speakers. In addition we arrange Ladies to Dine lunches - approx 4 per year and Day Trips for wives and partners - approx 2 per year. New members are always welcome. Interested persons can attend a meeting as a guest to see for themselves how we operate. There are no selection procedures its just a question of completing an application for form.
