Rainhill Gala 29hth May2017 2076 -11:30am 29th May - 11.30am StStAnn’s School Field, Ann’s School Field,View ViewRoad Road Hi and thanks for picking up this year’s Gala programme, it is a fabulous way of raising funds to put on the event however it is also a great way of finding local trades and services so why not keep it in the drawer until you need it over the next year? This year we’re celebrating our 10th anniversary with a seaside theme and we’re inviting everyone to put a hanky on their head, grab an ice cream and take a seat on one of the many deckchairs you’ll find at the seaside at this year’s Gala, there’s a sandy play area and puppet show. Elsewhere at the Gala this year there’s a fun packed arena, see the pull out programme in the centre pages for more details, lots of fun for our smaller Rainhillians at the funfair, over 40 stalls and attractions, food and beer and loads more too! upto? to? The comSo what what else have we we been ben up mittee have been busy planning for future events, in September we’ll be hosting Rainhill’s first 10K run, plus we’re taking an active role in the Rainhill Trials 190 celebrations in conjunction with many other local groups, headed up by the Parish Council. This is something we’re really excited about and you can get involved too, contact us for more info

Our main aim is to bring a great event to our village, which in turn will promote local groups and make Rainhill a great place to live and work however on the back of that we are delighted to report that you helped us raise £10,000 for local good causes last year, see page 20 for full details of who we helped in 2016. Whilst it is difficult to put an exact figure on how much has been raised for the community in the 10 years we have been going, we estimate that as a result of the Gala over £70,000 has been raised! There’s loads going on this year and we look forward to seeing you all there, but we do need your help! All of our staff are volunteers and without them there wouldn’t be a Gala, if you can spare a little time, either on the day or to help setting up or taking down, please do get in touch. It’s really rewarding and you too can say, ’I did that!’ Don’t forget the FREE park and ride from Rainhill High, first bus leaves at 11:20. Lastly from me is to say a huge thanks to our supporters, we’re really lucky to have so many in our relatively small community. Steve Clarke, Chairman

CATERPILLAR CLUB About our Caterpillar Club. All our young disabled adults have limitations and all need permanent support to live their lives. The kind donations like the ones from Rainhill Gala has meant that we are able to give our young people sessions at the 4F Centre. Activities like Archery or Educating them by doing fun activities like Handling Reptiles and Birds of Prey. If we are unable to get funders to help us, these young disabled people would have a very limited quality of life. Here is a photo of the group enjoying the Birds of Prey session, as you can see the group thoroughly enjoyed it!

LITTLE EXPLORERS The “Little Explorers” have been meeting in the Scout Hut, Old Lane, Rainhill with their carers since March 2017 on a Wednesday and Thursday. We have enjoyed our Easter Fun Session wearing our Easter Hats and celebrated St Davids Day and World Book Day. During our Music Explorers sessions we used different pots and pans to make a lot of noise as well as creating other home made instruments to use in our band, We also explored different pots and pans to make a lot of noise as well as creating other home made instruments to use in our band. The Committee and the users of the Lester Drive Centre are very grateful to the Rainhill Gala Committee who regulary support us in several of our projects. We have slowly been working on our green energy campaign and we are delighted the Gala contributed to converting our 10 old modular fittings, each with 4 fluorescent tubes per unit to, energy efficient LED panels which are energy efficient, brighter and do not flicker. There has been a number of very pleasing comments about how much better the lighting is for playing bridge, crafting & art. Thankyou

All about Rainhill Civic Society “Civic Society? That’s something to do with the Council, isn’t it?” Not so. Rainhill Civic Society is a voluntary group of people who have the interests of Rainhill at heart. This is our 50th year. During that time we’ve done everything from planting trees to radio and TV interviews. We hold talks, free to everyone. Recently we’ve heard about the new Mersey Gateway crossing, the Beecham family in St Helens and St Anne’s Well. We’ve published several books about Rainhill and our exhibitions always attract plenty of visitors from Rainhill and further Members tidy up the Precinct trough afield. If you are a gardener you might have taken part in our annual Rainhill in Bloom event. We keep an eye on planning applications and we comment to the Council on those that we feel will affect our surroundings. One of our speakers charms our President, Christine Scott.

Our website www.rainhill-civic-society.org.uk has a page where old Rainhillians across the world can contact old friends. There‘s plenty more information about the Society and Rainhill on the site, too, and you can apply to become a member.

Our Heritage group has a wealth of documents, pictures and sound recordings about the area’s past. On our heritage website www.rainhillremembers.uk you can find out more. It also holds detailed information about Rainhill’s part in the First World War. You might even be able to track down a relative who served. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter. Spooky by Day and Spookier by Night

On a spooky Saturday in October the Village Hall the scene was set for a double dose of creep goings on. Web filled trees and a balloon filled corridor awaited the 100 kids who joined us for the Spooky by day disco. Singing, dancing and competitions followed by a group walk through the village to the Eco Garden where the fun continued. A couple of hours to get the hall ready then the doors flung open welcoming over 100 adults to the Spookier by Night adults disco. The costumes worn for both discos were fantastic, everyone made so much effort, but it seems that a good time was had by all and our thanks have to go out to the dozens of people, who helped carve over 100 pumpkins. We’re always looking for new ideas so if you have one for an event, contact us via Facebook.

Rainhill Musical Theatre Company Amateur dramatics society Est .1951

We are based at Rainhill Village Hall. It has a strong youth & adult group ranging from aged 4 years to more mature members in their seventies. Members are a diverse mix of backgrounds, interests and personalities, all united by one passion which is to put on high quality entertainment for the Rainhill community & surrounding area and have fun doing it!

We have been very grateful for the funding & exposure provided by the Rainhill Gala Committee over the years. Recent funding was provided to enable us to purchase a number of head mics. These have been an excellent addition to our sound equipment and have enhanced performances during our most recent shows of “9 to 5 The Musical” & our musical review “Reel to Real”. RMTC has performed on the Gala arena stage several times allowing us to showcase both the youth and adult talents as well as an opportunity to advertise our productions and attract new members. We will be performing again this year so please check the arena schedule for more information.

All our hard work has definitely paid off this year with a record twelve award nominations from the National Opera and Dramatic Association & we were delighted to receive two awards. Samantha Moores was awarded Best Female Lead in a Pantomime for her portrayal of Jack Trott in Jack and the Beanstalk and Wayne Oakes was awarded Best Musical Director for his work on 9 to 5 – The Musical. Les Dagnall, production manager, also received an acknowledgement for services to amateur dramatics. RMTC is currently hard at work rehearsing for our upcoming show Boogie Nights. It tells the hilarious & heart warming story of Roddy, a Jack-the lad, whose life of birds, booze and boogie is about to be turned upside down. It’s the night that the King, Elvis Presley died & Roddy is dreaming of life as a rock star! It features well known 70’s disco songs including Disco Inferno, Enough is Enough, Boogie Wonderland & many more.

Boogie Nights will be performed at our usual venue, Rainhill Village Hall, 15th-17 June 7.30 pm plus a Saturday matinee.

Tickets are available via our website www.rainhillmusicaltheatrecompany.co.uk

If Rainhill Musical Theatre Company sounds like a group you would like to be a part of then we would love to hear from you. There are a number of ways to become involved either performing, production team or front of house and you don’t need to be experienced!
