Rainhill Gala 2015 25th May 2015 -11:30am St Ann’s School Field, View Road Hi and thanks for picking up the 2015 Rainhill Gala programme and being part of this years event which promises to be a good one! Your Gala committee has been hard at work planning more and more fun events and we’ve seen a great success in 2014 which we hope to replicate throughout the course of this year. Of course the ideas for the events need to come from the people that join us and we are always looking for new and innovative ideas so why not get in touch with your suggestions, either come and see us on the day in the Hospitality Tent or contact us through our website, Facebook or Twitter. So what’s in store this year? Well we’ve some the old favourites, a kiddies funfair, loads of stalls and attractions for all the family, meet and greet with characters, a fun packed arena, great local food and of course the once-a-year- chance to sample Rainhill Gala’s own real ale, Rocket Fuel. This year marks our 9th annual event and we still can’t believe and thank everyone for the support we receive without which we wouldn’t be able to put on so many events. Last year we tried something completely different in Alice’s Woodland Easter Trail at

Loyola Hall, with all 500 tickets going in days of going on sale! We also had the 70’s/80’s disco in November as well as out Annual Barn Dance which we have already repeated in 2015. We hope you enjoy looking through this year’s programme which again helps us to raise funds to put on a great value Gala in May and we hope that you find the features and adverts within this programme useful, why not keep hold of this throughout the year as a directory of local services and trades. Don’t forget to mention that you found their details here. Of course I couldn’t finish here without saying a personal thanks to our committee of volunteers who put the events on each year. We are a relatively small group who meet each month to brainstorm new ideas and we are always looking for new people to join us either as part of the committee or even just lending a hand on the day. If you can get involved in any way, get in touch! Once again thanks for picking this years programme up and we all look forward to seeing you on 25th May. See you there! Steve Clarke, Chairman

Special feature in conjunction with If you’ve been out and about in Rainhill recently you can’t help but have noticed that the electrification of the line through Rainhill is now complete and we asked Network Rail to comment on the development from a safety point of view. The electrification of the line is both exciting and will bring with it efficiencies that we can all benefit from. Electrifying the route through Rainhill will mean faster, greener, quieter and more reliable journeys for passengers however we wanted to highlight this new additional danger. Please take a minute to read the article and sit down with your children to ensure they are aware of the dangers that are present in and around railways. For more info go to www.rail-life.co.uk

NEVER TRESPASS ON THE RAILWAY STAY AWAY FROM THE TRACKS Overhead power cables have now been installed on the rail line between Manchester and Liverpool through Rainhill. These overhead power cables carry 25,000v of electricity. The electricity is never switched off. Network Rail has been working closely with schools, youth groups and local communities throughout the area explaining the dangers and the need to stay away from the tracks. We are asking parents to help us explain and make clear the dangers of trespassing on the railway to their children, and to help us keep their children safe, by asking them to stay away from the tracks, especially during the lighter evenings and school holidays. Janet Clark, community safety manager for Network Rail, said "The railway is extremely dangerous and along with other hazards the electrification of the lines poses potentially fatal consequences to anyone who trespasses. We need to remind everyone that apart from being very dangerous, it is illegal to trespass on the railway track. Too many people’s lives are lost or ruined because they decided to take risks on the tracks. " Network Rail is investing more than £1bn to provide a better railway in the north which includes the electrification of some existing lines to allow faster, more frequent and quieter trains to be used. If you have information regarding a trespass incident please contact British Transport Police on 0800 405040. The Network Rail National Helpline Number is 03457 114141. 6

Rainhill Rotary Club Beer Festival A record number of customers attended our 12 th Beer Festival last November. Significantly improved tented accommodation in which 100 beers and a wide choice of lager and cider were available, ensured a brilliant, social success. At our ‘Dragons’ Den’ evening last month, a large number of local charities were recipients of a significant proportion of profits from the event. The sale of alcohol at the Festival does not in itself generate profit over associated costs. The event relies heavily on the generosity of our sponsors. They are individually invited to contribute £100. For this donation the sponsor receives 4 free-entry tickets, advertising both on our Festival website and also in the professionally produced programme, with name and company against a particular beer. Many of our sponsors have been with us for all eleven years. They continue to be most generous and we thank them sincerely. For 2015 we are keen to discuss with any interested party, a role as major sponsor for what we know will be an even bigger and better event than in previous years.

Anyone who might be interested in joining Rainhill Rotary Club with its 48 members or supporting our Beer Festival in any way, please contact Andrew on 07767 693800

LOCAL LADIES TAKE ON TOUGH MUDDER A local ‘fitness family’ known as Heatone Fitness have been extremely busy raising funds for local charities. In recent months, they completed the famous 12 mile obstacle course Tough Mudder, raising over £5,000 for local charities including the Honey Rose Foundation and Willowbrook Hospice. Most of these ladies had never exercised before until joining Heatone Fitness Body Transform Bootcamp programme. “I never in a million years thought I would be able to take part in an exercise programme like this, never mind complete Tough Mudder. I always hated exercise at school and haven't done anything in years until I discovered Heatone Fitness. I now love going to my classes and have made so many friends. Everybody is so supportive and I can’t imagine not being part of it. We’re like one big family.” Julie is just one of the many ladies whose lives have been changed by Heatone Fitness. Ellen, the director of the company says “We aim to help real women get real results. Although we do have ladies who are super fit, we specialise in helping ladies who want to get back to feeling good after having children who don’t like going to a gym. I personally don’t enjoy the atmosphere of a gym and find them intimidating so I try to bring something unique in that we learn everybody's names, assign everybody a mentor, buddy up with people and most importantly enjoy themselves. We aim to make each and every person feel great about themselves and make every session fun and sociable.” The Heatone Fitness crew do a number of charity events each year including their annual Charity Awards night, fancy dress Halloween and Christmas Bootcamp, Family Charity Bootcamp, Ramp up the Red Bootcamp plus various organised events such as Pretty Muddy, Run or Dye, Race for Life, St Helens 10k and it’s a Knock Out, all to raise funds for local cancer and heart charities. Heatone Fitness offer a range of Bootcamp sessions in both Rainhill and Rainhill as part of a membership programme which includes a full nutritional programme, which gets their members fantastic results. There are also a range of Pay As You Go dance fitness sessions which are included as part of the Bootcamp membership, the newest one bring GLOW FIT which includes dancing in the dark with glow sticks and flashing lights to 90’s dance music. They have recently added some mixed morning sessions too so men can get in on the action too. As well as the Nutrition Programme and exercise sessions, Ellen is also a nutritional advisor who has devised a 21 Day Online Detox Programme. This is perfect for people who want to get great results without attending classes a short home workouts plus a nutrition programme are supplied. Their next Bootcamp intake is Monday 1st June. Check out www.heatonefitness.co.uk for more info or email ellen@heatonefitness.org.

Oakwood Pre-School

Playgroup welcomes all children aged 2 to 5 years through their doors during 8am and 3pm in school terms. We offer 15 hour places for 2 , 3 and 4 year old funded children as well as places for parents who wish longer hours or pay for their children’s sessions if not funded. The children recently invaded Underwater Street in Liverpool and investigated different science activities through play with many enjoying the bubble play and making a volcano. We are looking forward to a visit to Martin Mere in Burscough to learn about new life with the younger children while the older group will be visiting Acorn Farm in Kirkby to milk a goat, pet the baby animals and learn about the new life on a farm. The children created a field of poppies for Rainhill Civic Society world war event in St Ann's Church and enjoyed looking at all the exhibits in September. We also enjoy our storyteller visits every month and have recently started a Stretch-n-Grow session learning about exercise and Healthy Living each week. We enjoyed Lunch with Santa in a local pub and delivered our Christmas cards and gifts as well as singing our Christmas songs for the Luncheon Club Christmas Party in Rainhill Village Hall. There were lots of Nursery Rhyme Characters and Storybook Characters in the room for our Book Day Celebrations with a visit from Peppa Pig and Iggle Piggle to add to the excitement. You will regularly see us around the village shops, parks and joining in with story time at Rainhill Library and Giggletots sessions. We will be saying goodbye and good luck to 25 children as they move onto their next big adventure in the local Primary Schools in July with a celebration of their time in Oakwood and graduation ceremony with their families in a local venue. If you would like your child to join in our fun then please contact Diane on 07768 063 564 or call in and see us in the Scout Hut on Old Lane, Rainhill.

2015 programme comWhen you see your Gala programme coming through your door, it is instantly recognisable from the fabulous drawing on the front cover, and this year is no different. Gala committee member Diane Davies, kindly tasked youngsters in Rainhill to design this year’s front cover and the winner for 2015 is Thomas Waine who is 8 years old and goes to St Ann’s Cubs. Well done Thomas whose poster is on the front cover of the programme and will also feature in GIANT form in the village leading up to the Gala. Thomas receives a giant Easter egg and free entry onto the fair on the day! There were dozens of brilliant entries this year and the Gala committee had a really hard time choosing the winner however another entry that really stood out was Grace Aubee’s colourful picture. Grace is 7 years old and goes to 2nd Rainhill Brownies. Well done to Grace who also receives a chocolate egg. Well done to all of the entrants this year and we will be putting all of the pictures up on Gala day near to the entrance to the event, if you entered this year come and see if you can spot yours.....

IMPORTANT EVENT SAFETY Whilst we make every effort to ensure the safety of your children, the Rainhill Gala is a public event and as such we would ask that you ensure the safety of your children by supervising them at all times and not allowing them in restricted areas marked with tape or barriers. Please look for the lost children meeting point on site when you arrive which will be ‘Gala Hospitality Stall’ and make your child aware of what to do if you lose each other. Tell them not to panic and look for a Gala steward wearing a Hi-Visibility vest, police officer or security personnel.

Can we help your organisation? Since 2009 we have distributed nearly £25,000 to local groups in and around Rainhill and this year will be no different. Willowbrook Hospice will remain as our main beneficiary however we still want to give away Gala cash to smaller local groups. The 2014 Rainhill Gala was the best yet with record crowds, the success of the day reflected in the huge sum we managed to give away last year and we are once again inviting you to get in touch if you represent a local group and you think you can benefit from Gala cash. We aim to award money to groups in and around Rainhill who may find it difficult to find funding elsewhere. We don’t have the same criteria as some funding providers, the dreaded 30 page form, nor do we discriminate either. We do however insist that for a group to be eligible, that the entrance or joining requirements are not overly restricted and that the group operates in the interest of many people. One of the donations made last year was to Rainhill United JFC who used the money to help fund a defibrillator. Obviously we thought this was an outstanding way to use Gala cash and awarded Rainhill United £400. We don’t know how much we will be able to award this year, if anything, however any surplus funds will be divided between Willowbrook and local causes. If you would like to apply for funding, please apply by sending an email to funding@rainhillgala.co.uk giving as much detail as you can about your organisation. The closing date for applications is 1st July 2015 at which point we will reply to all applicants to indicate if we will be looking further into their application. We will of course need to verify all groups and someone from Rainhill Gala will need to come along to a group meeting or event. Terms and conditions apply, these are available on our website at www.rainhillgala.co.uk/funding and we promise to reply to all applicants.

Get up close and personal with the Birds of Prey at the 2015 Rainhill Gala Once again this year you will be able to get hands on with Birds of Prey and reptiles at the 2015 Gala. You can find displays within the stalls section of the Gala where experts will show you the animals and give you and insight into how they are cared for and what they eat. You might even be able to handle some of the animals. Please ensure you wash your hands after handling reptiles and other animals!

RAINHILL MODEL RAILWAY CLUB Rainhill Model Railway club was founded in 1995 and from an initial twenty one people who attended the inaugural meeting in St. Ann’s Parish Rooms. The club meets on two evenings a week in designated clubrooms and the members are busy constructing a number of layouts in gauges from N (1:160) to G (Garden Railway size), as well as working on personal projects. The club holds two exhibitions a year, one a family show at Christmas time with Santa as an honoured guest, and a main show held over two days on the first weekend in March. Both these events take place in the Rainhill Village Hall. In addition to our own exhibitions the club attends other events put on by model railway clubs and organisations all over the North of England and Wales. Since inception the club has supported many charities, such as Willowbrook Hospice, NCH, and Rainhill Guides to name but three. The members see the club as an essential part of the Village scene and are proud to be part of the Rainhill Gala organisation. The 2015 Rainhill Gala Barn Dance If you weren’t in the Village Hall on the evening of 11 April then you missed yet another great night! The Sixth Annual Barn dance was another popular night with band Two Left Feet and caller Brendan keeping everyone moving all night. With a generous helping of hotpot and a big dollop of good cheer, the night was enjoyed by over 100 people. This was a the first in our 2015 calendar of events and we are now looking at what else we can do this year. Want to be involved or have an idea? Then get in touch! The barn dance is another way that we can raise funds to help us put on the Gala, buy tables, chairs marquees etc so this really does help us a great deal. Want to find out what we’re doing next? Then keep an eye on our Facebook page for more info. You can either search for us online or go to facebook.com/rainhillgala

Rainhill Gala’s First (but not last) D I S C O A blast from the past it was with over 200 revellers dressed in 70’s, 80’s and, well pretty much anything, enjoyed a night with music and dancing. The last event in the 2014 calendar was a sell out and we couldn’t believe how many people we had to turn away once all of the tickets had gone, sorry if you were one! Keep an eye on our Facebook page for details of our next event. See you there..........
