Official Programme

30th May 2011 -11:30am St Ann’s School Field, View Road Believe it or not it’s nearly 12 months since the last Rainhill Gala and to everyone who came a great big thank you. We’ve got lots in store this year with a larger funfair, more stalls than ever, more and varied food and your chance to try Rainhill Gala’s own beer. In 2010 the Gala Committee were awarded the Good Citizenship award by Rainhill Parish Council in recognition of the work that goes into organising the event and I, as Chairman, echo those thoughts all the time. Most people wouldn’t believe how much work goes into organising the event and everything that goes with it and I would like to dedicate this message to all the volunteers who make the Gala happen and also to their families who also help a great deal too! Even though the Gala is a small independent organisation, some people think that the event is run by the Borough Council??? So what about the Gala this year? We’re celebrating the Royal Wedding so get the kids to dress up and they’ll get a gift from us, just ask them to go to the hospitality stand. We are always looking to do something different and that’s why we launched our own limited edition beer and thanks must go to the pubs that have participated in the project, see page 32 for more details. This year sees a bigger and better funfair with the emphasis still being on fun rather than big thrills. Of course we still believe in bringing you great value that’s why we still offer our wristbands at just £5 to play all day, see page 25 for all the details. And finally... This programme not only provides information about the Gala, it also helps us raise funds to enable us to fund the Gala and we are really grateful to all the sponsors and advertisers in this programme. Please do take a few minutes to read through the programme and if you contact any of the advertisers, please do say that you saw it here. In fact why not keep hold of this programme in case you need any of the services inside, there’s lots of local contacts and special offers inside which may save you money. Once again thank you for supporting Rainhill Gala. The team and I look forward to seeing you at the Gala on 30th May. See you there... Steve Clarke, Chairman

Ann, Becci & Julie would like to thank all of their customers for the help and support they received which made the 2010 It’s A Knockout such a success. Thanks everyone, we couldn’t have done it without you!

Who are Rainhill Gala? We’ve been described in many ways, as a committee, a group of individuals with a common interest and also a gang. All accurate descriptions (although none of us own a hoodie) and whatever you want to call us one thing that we do is have fun! The Gala in its current form was resurrected in 2006 as a fun day at the Eckies, but as the organisation grew we moved to our new date in May and our new home at St Ann’s in 2009. More and more organisations and individuals have joined including the Rotary Club, Parish Council, Model Railway Club and Willowbrook Hospice. But most of all the biggest recognition has to go to three fantastic ladies at the Bridge Barbers. Ann, Becci and Julie work really hard all year round and its fair to say that the Gala wouldn’t be what it is today without them! The one thing that we all have in common is that we’re all volunteers and we love it! A lot of emphasis is placed on the donations made to charity and local groups in and around the village however our greatest emphasis is on bringing the community together, We aim through our events to provide a platform for local groups and organisations to promote themselves within the community and also to bring an enhanced community spirit to Rainhill. Of course the funds we raise are all put to really good use and we were delighted to donate £10,000 in 2010 to local groups, see page 20 for more details. We’re all looking forward to this year’s Gala and would love to have you on board, if you can help see our article on page 46 for more details on how you can join our committee pictured below at the 2010 presentation evening in October presenting a cheque for £5,000 to volunteers from Willowbrook. We’d like to say thanks to all our sponsors and advertisers in the programme which help fund the Gala in advance and means that more of the money we raise on the day can go towards helping local good causes. All of the advertisers in the programme have a local connection, so please support them and mention you saw there ad here!

2011 programme competition To celebrate the Royal Wedding, this year we asked all Year 5 pupils in Rainhill to enter our competition to design a Kings & Queens themed poster to be used for the front cover of this programme. Four primary schools entered the competition and we had a huge number of entries, which meant this year’s judging was tough but the committee were unanimous and the winner was Sophia Dowdeswell (pictured right) from St Bartholomew’s RC primary. Sophia’s entry has also been printed on large posters which will be displayed around the village before the Gala. Sophia wins a family pass to Knowsley Safari Park, Easter egg and a free funfair wristband.

The 1st runner up was Maddy Grindley from Longton Lane Primary School

The 2nd runner up was Libbie Jackson from St Ann’s CE Primary School

Well done to Maddy and Libbie who both receive an Easter egg and a wristband for the funfair at the Gala. Well done to everyone who entered, all the entries were fantastic!!! Look out if you are in Year 5 next year for your chance to enter as all schools in Rainhill will be invited to enter once again and design a poster for next year’s theme.

Thanks to Knowsley Safari Park for once again for kindly donating the prize for the poster competition. Find out park opening times by visiting www.knowsley.com

Rainhill Parish Council Rainhill Parish Council have been associated with the Rainhill Gala since 2007 and are looking forward to being a partner member for many years to come. Current Chairperson Dot Kelly said, “We all look forward to

the Gala Fun day every year and the generosity of the local residents is incredible” “Here’s hoping it’s the biggest event ever this year”. This year the Parish Council honoured four local ladies for their efforts in the community and Good Citizenship Awards were presented to Maureen Monaghan, Margaret Fairclough, Judy Lowe and Ros Tigwell. Thank you all for your contributions to the local area, it really does make Rainhill Village such a special place.

It’s a Knockout 2011 The Parish Council will again sponsor a team and will again be looking to Rainhill High School to represent us in this’ years It’s a Knockout 2011. In 2009 we won the Mike Doyle Memorial Cup and we are hoping for a repeat performance from our current squad. Competition is always fierce but our squad have been training relentlessly for this over the winter months (only kidding).

We are all hoping for another warm sunny day like last year, and are hoping to see even more residents from Rainhill and beyond at the Gala, supporting our Knockout team of course! Well Done from the Parish Council to all the many organisers of the Gala day, we appreciate all the hard work that goes into making such a day a great success.

Can we help your organisation? Last year we donated over £10,000 to local groups right here in Rainhill. We were pleased that the money went to groups that meant a wide range of people benefitted from Gala cash. A full report can be found on page 5 detailing all the beneficiaries from 2010. This year we will be doing the same with 50% of the money raised from the Gala going to our main charity, Willowbrook Hospice and 50% supporting small groups in Rainhill. We aim to award money to groups in Rainhill who may find it difficult to find funding elsewhere. We don’t have the same criteria as some funding providers, the dreaded 30 page form, nor do we discriminate either. We do however insist that for a group to be eligible, that the entrance or joining requirements are not overly restricted and that the group operates in the interest of many people. Pictured below is the Rainhill United Under 8’s team who were looking for a kit sponsor, and as this benefits many children, we considered this to be a worthwhile cause and awarded them £450 to buy a new football kit in 2009. We don’t know how much we will be able to award this year, if anything, however any surplus funds will be divided between Willowbrook and local causes. If you would like to apply for funding, please apply online at

www.rainhillgala.co.uk/funding The form is just one page and only asks basic questions. We will then email you by the closing date of 1st July 2011 to let you know if we will be looking further into your application. We will of course need to verify your group and someone from Rainhill Gala will need to come along to one of your group meetings. Terms and conditions apply, these are available on our website and we promise to reply to all applicants.

Special thanks to our friends at Golden Triangle Power Generation for supplying the power for the Rainhill Gala 2011

RAINHILL MODEL RAILWAY CLUB Rainhill Model Railway Club was founded in 1995 and from an initial twenty one people who attended the inaugural meeting in St. Ann's Parish Rooms a club was formed. The membership has now grown to fifty, and we have a waiting list. The club meets on three evenings a week in designated clubrooms and the members are busy constructing a number of layouts in gauges from N (1:160) to G (Garden Railway size), as well as working on personal projects. The. club holds two exhibitions a year, a family show at Christmas time with Santa as honored guest, and a main show held over two days on the first weekend in March. Both these events take place in the Rainhill Village Hall. In addition to our own exhibitions the club attends other events put on by model railway clubs and organisations all over the North of England and Wales. Since inception the club has supported many charities, such as Willowbrook, NCH, and Rainhill Guides to name but three. The members see the club as an essential part of the Village scene and are proud to be part of Rainhill Gala. However our existence is under threat as Knowsley Council have decided to demolish the Prescot Leisure Centre where our clubrooms are located. We are, therefore, searching the area for new premises which will enable us to carry on our activities , so if you know of any premises to rent at a reasonable rate we would be very pleased to talk to you.

More information on the club and contact details may be found on the club web site - www.rainhillmrc.org.uk

Rainhill Gala 2010 The Rainhill Gala 2010 was a fantastic event, the weather was glorious, the crowds were the biggest yet and everyone seemed to enjoy their day. However one of the best results of the day was the money raised for charities and local good causes in our area. There were many stalls at the Gala who were raising funds for their own good causes, however due to the success of the 2010 Gala, we were able to make some substantial donations on your behalf totalling £10,000. This is in addition to the achievements of individual stallholders, so the estimated total raised for charities and local causes was WELL IN EXCESS OF £15,000! Do you want to apply for funding this year, if so see the support article on page 18 for details of how to apply, but please do so BEFORE 1st JULY 2011.

There were many donations made as a result of the 2010 Gala, here are some of them: £5,000 went to Willowbrook Hospice to help toward building maintenance costs. There’s a photo on page 3 which shows the committee presenting a cheque to Sheila and her volunteers who travel around the area with their stall.

Rainhill Rocket JFC - £500

The funding request was to assist with our under 17s team which we had not budgeted for as our teams normally leave at under 16s. The money received went towards a new kit as they had outgrown the old kit and entrance fees to the under 17s league. The under 17s have just won the league and are in the cup final Easter Sunday. Without the money kindly donated it would not have been possible to fund this team for this season. Cheque presented by Rainhill Gala’s Ann Daniels

Facing Life And Pain - £300 Local group Facing Life And Pain (FLAP) were awarded £300 to help with running costs. The group is a support network that meets regularly to help those who suffer from chronic pain. The charity recognises the needs of all pain sufferers across the community regardless of age or disability. Cheque presented by Rainhill Gala’s Sharon Roberts

Rainhill Mums & Tots - £500 Rainhill Mums & Tots meet on Thursday mornings in the

Village Hall to provide support to local mums and provide play facilities for tots in the area for a small fee. The Gala supported them with a £500 donation to purchase an industrial toaster and subsidise the rent for the next year. Pictured Rainhill Gala’s Zoe Strange awards the cheque to Betty & Pam from Mums & Tots.

Where did the money go? Samaritans of St Helens, Samaritans of St Helen's, Warrington and Halton thank Warrington & Halton - £200 the Rainhill Gala Committee for their generous donation last year. With this money we were able to provide a projector screen for our presentations to Schools and other groups. The money also provided the funds to provide local Secondary schools with information booklets on Emotional Health . Samaritans offer confidential emotional support by telephone or e-mail to anyone in distress . We are open 24 hours a day every day of the year. Rainhill Musical Theatre Company - £200 2010 was a challenging year for Rainhill Musical Theatre Company. In January we were forced to postpone the Pantomime due to the extreme weather conditions. Not to be outdone by the snow, we rescheduled 'Sleeping Beauty' for April 2010. We had a fantastic time at the Gala last year. So many people visited our stand and expressed an interest. We were already thinking of putting on Little Shop of Horrors in November and were greatly encouraged by how many of you loved the idea and shared that it was one of your favourite shows. We were able to secure local boy done good, Billy Moores ('Watching' and 'Our Day Out' to name a few) to co-produce the show with Maria Heaton. We were thrilled to be awarded a grant from the Gala committee of £200 towards the show's costs which were considerable and in November 2010 we performed to packed out audiences at the Village Hall. It was a great success. Thanks to everyone who came. We are now in our 60th year and looking forward to a sing-a-long concert on 10th June. We hope you will join us. We begin rehearsals for our January Panto in the summer. We have recently securred the rights to perform the hit musical 'Chess' scheduled for June 2012. Look out for publicity nearer the time or telephone Rosie on 0151 292 4458 to secure your tickets early. We welcome new members and meet every Wednesday in the Village Hall at 8pm. Check out our website www.rainhillmusicaltheatrecompany.co.uk . Alternatively you can find us on Facebook and Twitter '@rmtc'. Cheque presented by Rainhill Gala’s Zoe Strange

Rainhill Senior Citizens Lunch Club - £500

For the 2nd year running the Rainhill Senior Citizens Luncheon Club have been awarded £500 to allow them to continue their vital work in the local community. Prior to the donation 12 months ago they were faced with closure due to a lack of funds, however they continue to offer a good value home cooked lunch to many of our seniors every week. The donation will once again pay the rent at the Village Hall for the next 12 months. 21 Cheque presented by Rainhill Gala’s Colin Oldfield.

Rainhill Rainbow Wins National Competition This year’s winner of the Retired Greyhound Trust’s Ultimate Dog Coat Competition was 6 year old Eve Clayton. Eve, from St Helens, entered the competition via the 5 th Rainhill Rainbows. Her design for the latest must-have dog coat beat hundreds of entries from across the country. Eve had already been named as the winner of the North West’s six and under category and at the Great Greyhound Gathering in Nottingham, she won the overall competition. Eve entered the competition along with other Rainbows and Brownies after a talk about greyhounds given by Pat and Nicola, accompanied by Coral, from the North West Branch of the Retired Greyhound Trust. Ivor Stocker, Chairman of the Trust said: “Eve did a fantastic job with her design.” Eve is pictured with Coral – sporting the winning design, and Nicola. Well done Eve! L RAINHIL GALA

SHOP LOCAL IN RAINHILL A vital part of any village is its local family run businesses and Rainhill is no exception. The campaign “Keep Rainhill Busy” has been running for over 2 years but organisers say they village is still suffering from a decline in visitors. Carl Birchall of The Village Butcher says that he sees “...a bleak future for the village and that it will in time become nothing more than a thoroughfare for travelling between Prescot and Warrington.”. There have been several changes in recent years, with HSBC withdrawing from the village, and the subsequent loss of a 24 hour cash machine, and the introduction of car parking charges at Dane Court. However times have moved on which have benefitted the local community including the introduction of a free cash machine in Ann’s newsagent in Dane Court and an extended free parking area at the back of the Co-op (formally Somerfield).

Why shop in your village? It’s certain that the convenience of out of town shopping in the big supermarket is convenient, but is it really value for money? We looked in a handful of the shops including Longsters Chemist, The Village Butcher and The Fruit Shop and found that EVERY item we looked at was cheaper than a nearby big supermarket*. These were everyday essentials including eggs, potatoes, washing up liquid, deodorant and sausages. Also ask yourself if the big supermarkets can tell you where their fresh produce comes from? Also by shopping locally you may not need to do a big shop therefore reducing food waste and saving even more money!

Support the campaign! If you want to help support the campaign then then pop down and speak to the shopkeepers to find out how you can benefit from shopping locally. There’s more available in your local village than you might think! *Comparisons correct 28 March 2011 made via mywww.supermarket.co.uk

Rainhill Young Musician of the Year 2010 In October 2010, young musicians (aged 7-18) from all the schools in Rainhill, gathered at Longton Lane Primary School to take part in first round adjudications of Voice, Piano, Brass, Strings &Woodwind. From the 25 section winners, performing in the finale, Karen Humphreys, Head of the Junior RNCM, adjudicated the competition and awarded the winner ADAM MATTHEW CASE ( YEAR 9 Cornet Player – Rainhill High School) The Mike Doyle Memorial Trophy and a cash prize of £150. (Mike was a founder member of the committee briefly, due to his sudden death in December 2008. The committee, felt that Mike’s passion in nurturing young people in Rainhill had a profound impact on the local community & to commemorate his memory and inspiration in a tangible way, a memorial trophy would provide a fitting legacy). The events over the two days in October saw St Ann’s Church seat more than 550 people. 9 schools participated & more than 300 children took part overall, including competitors entering the RYMOY 2010 & those representing their schools as part of a Choir or Choral group. This was a remarkable achievement and a huge thank you goes out to the all the local community and residents. Support is vital in planning for successful future festival years. The committee is indebted to all involved to date.

Rainhill Rotary Club would like to thank everyone in Rainhill for making our fundraising so successful again this year. Over the past year we had two major fund raising activities, the Christmas Float and our Beer Festival. These events help us to donate over £18,000 to local, national, and international charities. Naturally we are very proud of our fundraising achievements, unfortunately at the time of going to press we have NO venue for this year's Beer Festival, as Prescot Leisure Centre will be closing. However we are currently trying to secure a venue in the Rainhill Area to enable this highly successful event to continue. If you haven't been to the Beer Festival then you will have seen us walking around the streets of Rainhill with our Father Christmas Sleigh. We always end our festivities on Christmas Eve when Santa and his many helpers can be seen rattling their collection cans up and down the main street. If you are in the village at this time come and say hello and join us in a glass of mulled wine. The Rainhill Gala is now a major event and the Rotary Club is proud to support it as it gives us the opportunity to work more closely with the community at large. Why not come and join us at the beer tent and enjoy a pint or two of our Gala Real Ale - " Rocket Fuel." Once again, on behalf of the members of Rainhill Rotary Club we would like to take the opportunity to thank all the residents of Rainhill for their generosity and support. If you would like to know more, see us at the Gala Beer Tent or log on to our web site: www.rainhillrc.freeserve.co.uk

The Commercial No2masts campaigners are delighted to announce that O2 have confirmed that they will NOT be installing a mast in one of Rainhill’s housing estates thanks to the support of residents and Rainhill Gala. Principal Organiser Derek Clarke said “We are delighted with the result and would like to thank everyone for their support. It took over 18 months of campaigning both in the public eye and behind the scenes, and we’re so glad we did. We would all like to say a big thanks to everyone who supported us.” O2 have now confirmed that they are looking at alternatives to the Kendricks Fold site to improve their coverage of Rainhill without disturbing residents.

Rainhill Gala EVENTS Presents Barn Dance 2011 As if the Gala on its own isn’t enough, those funny people who run the Gala decided to have another Barn Dance in the Village Hall in April. Tickets were sold out in advance of the event with interest from all age groups across the area wanting to come and dance the do-si-do at the 2nd annual hoedown run by Rainhill Gala. The Travelling People (pictured right) from Liverpool, were fantastic and instructed everyone through the steps. There was tasty Cottoms hot pot, scrummy apple pie and a licensed bar to keep everyone happy throughout the night. Next year’s event is already in the planning for 14th A p ril 2 0 1 2 ! See you there!

Be the first to hear of all future events, log on to www.facebook.com/rainhillgala and press the like button. We’ll then let you know of all our future events before they are publicised elsewhere!

The Rainhill Gala wouldn’t happen without the support of so many volunteers from our community, and this is where we need you! The Gala committee meets once a month to plan for the annual event, and we are always looking for new members to join our committee. You don’t need any special skills or experience, you just need to want to do something positive in our community. Our current volunteers come from many different backgrounds and together make a wonderful team, but as the old saying goes, many hands make light work! Even if you don’t want to make a regular commitment by joining our committee, you can still help out by getting involved on or around Gala day itself. If you have a spare hour on Sunday 29th or Monday 30th May we would love to hear from you! On the Sunday we will be setting up for the event and on Gala day there are a number of duties including stewarding, running stalls & raffles and general hospitality. Go on, be a part of YOUR Gala and help make a difference!
