Official Programme Minimum donation 50p

31st May 2010 -11:30am St Ann‟s School Field, View Road First of all, welcome to the Rainhill Gala 2010 programme and thanks for supporting this year’s event. By buying this programme, you are helping to fund the Gala which means we can raise much needed funds for local good causes. Last year we raised £8,700 for Willowbrook Hospice and local good causes in Rainhill, this year we hope to help more groups and organisations in our community. Although Willowbrook will remain as the main charity of the Rainhill Gala this year, we aim to make smaller donations to local groups in our community to help fund special projects, buy new equipment etc. If you want to apply to us for funding this year, please see page 17 for details and how to apply. The Gala is run entirely by volunteers and without them, the support of local businesses and you, we wouldn’t have such a great event at the heart of our community. We thank our friends at St Ann’s school for allowing us to host the event on their field once again, a great time was had by all last year and all the photo’s & videos are available on our website! We are still looking for volunteers to help us run the event safely and if you can spare a little time on the day, please call Steve on 07951 324 599. The 4 page pull out in the centre of this programme gives more details of what’s on and parking arrangements. This year’s theme is the Wild West, so why not come dressed for the occasion and enjoy a drink in the Saloon, browse the stalls in Rodeo Drive or have a go on the Rodeo Bull. There is even the County Jail for little kids. Prizes are up for grabs in our best dressed competition for the kids. We’ll see you there………

Rainhill Gala 2009 - Where did all the money go? The Rainhill Gala 2009 was a fantastic event, the weather was glorious, the crowds were big and everyone seemed to enjoy their day. However one of the best results of the day was the money raised for charities and local good causes in our area. There were many stalls at the Gala who were raising funds for their own good causes, however due to the success of the 2009 Gala, we were able to make some substantial donations on your behalf totalling £8,700. This is in addition to the achievements of individual stallholders, so the estimated total raised for charities and local causes was WELL IN EXCESS OF £10,000!

The donations were as follows: £4,150 went to Willowbrook Hospice to help toward building maintenance costs. £1,500 was awarded to Rainhill Guides which went towards the rebuilding costs of the Guidehouse on Stoney Lane. £1,000 donated to St Ann’s Primary School which has been put towards the costs of renovating parts of the school to provide a better education to the pupils. £650 was given to the Millennium Centre for repair and maintenance of large dividing doors in the centre. £500 was given to the Pensioners’ Luncheon Club which paid their rent for 12 months (see page 6 for all the details), £450 for Rainhill United Under 8’s which provided them with a new kit. £250 went to NW Greyhound Trust which allowed them to buy a projector to help them with their work in our community (see page 7 for more details). Finally we awarded £200 to the Rainhill nO2masts campaign which is a small group who are fighting against the erection of phone masts next to houses in and around Rainhill Village (see page 27). What makes Rainhill Gala donations different is that we make it easier for groups in our area to ask for funding, especially groups who may find it hard finding funding elsewhere. If you would like to apply for support from this year’s Gala, please see Page 17 for more. Please help us to raise more this year and come to the Gala! 5

THE PENSIONERS‟ LUNCHEON CLUB The Luncheon Club was started by Harry and Margaret Whitfield about 40 years ago in the Holt Congregational Church Hall and eventually moved to Rainhill Village Hall. Meals cost 50p at that time, but all these years later it has crept up to £2.50 for dinner, pudding and a cup of tea. We exist only on the money we take in from the pensioners, but we manage to provide a decent meal and break even. We get help once year from the churches of St Ann and St James who give us produce from their harvest festivals, we really appreciate that. Also we are very fortunate to have a good friend in Carl at the Village Butcher, who always gives us the turkey (enough for 50+ people) for our Christmas Dinner and supplies us throughout the year at very reasonable prices.

We were delighted last summer to be offered our first real donation, when Rainhill Gala gave us £500. This has been a Godsend as it has covered the cost of the rent of the kitchen and the Maple room in the Village Hall for 12 months. We are extremely grateful for that as it has made things so much easier this year. Our lovely pensioners who come each week always say how much they enjoy their meals and we’re sure that many of them come for the company as much as the food as many have no-one to talk to for the rest of the week. We in the kitchen also enjoy the company and the banter. It’s hard work, but also great fun and so worthwhile. Our grateful thanks to anyone who has helped us in any way and kept our shoe-string stretching.

SPECIAL FEATURE

Rainhill Model Railway Club The Club was founded in 1995 and from an initial 21 people who attended the inaugural meeting in St Ann’s Parish Rooms, we now have a membership of 50 and have a waiting list. The Club meets on three evenings a week in designated Club rooms and the members are busy constructing a number of layouts in gauges N (1:60) to G (garden railway size), as well as working on personal projects. The Club holds two exhibitions a year: one a family show at Christmas time with Santa as an honoured guest and a main show held over two days on the first weekend in March. Both these events take place in the Rainhill Village Hall. In addition to our own exhibitions the Club attends other events put on by model railway clubs and organisations all over the North of England and Wales. Since inception, the Club has supported many charities such as Willowbrook Hospice, NCH and Rainhill Guides to name but three. The members see the Club as an essential part of the Village scene and are proud to be part of the Rainhill Gala. More information on the Club and contact details may be found on the Club 6 website www.rainhillmrc.org.uk

is pleased to be part of Rainhill Gala 2010. Our exhibition during National Heritage Week last September showed that Rainhill people have always enjoyed a celebration.

1950s

1931

Most famous of all was the day in 1829 when The Rocket put Rainhill on the world map. Since then, local celebrations have included royal visits, rose queens, pageants, Rainhill on Show and Rocket 150, another international event. Our Society holds talks and events throughout the year. Come and enjoy them, enter Rainhill in Bloom, become a member and perhaps join our committee.

Thanks Rainhill! Rainhill Rotary Club would like to thank everyone in Rainhill for making their fundraising so successful again this year. Rainhill Rotary Club is a group of like minded men who meet every week and have a great time raising money for local and international charities. We were so pleased when the Rainhill Gala was resurrected four years ago as it gave us the perfect opportunity to work closely with the community, and at the same time raise money for local good causes. We have two major fund raising activities over the year starting with our Beer Festival, which is held at Prescot Leisure Centre in November. We are pleased to say that our 2009 festival proved to be another sell out with over 1500 customers coming through the doors and enjoying some of our 80 real ales.

Most of you will remember seeing us walking around the streets of Rainhill when we take our Father Christmas Float out and about. We end our festive activities in the village on Christmas Eve when Santa and his many helpers can be seen rattling their collecting cans up and down the shopping area. On behalf of the members of Rainhill Rotary Club we would like to take the opportunity to thank all the residents of Rainhill for their generosity and support in all our fund raising activities.

2010 programme competition We asked all Year 5 pupils in Rainhill to enter our competition to design a poster to be used for the front cover of this programme. Three schools entered the competition and we had a total of 121 pictures entered, which meant this year’s judging was tough. We took the pictures to the Rainhill Parish Good Citizenship awards and asked the recipients, their guests and, of course, the Chairman of the Parish to help us pick a winner and two runners up. The decision was unanimous and the winner was Jessica Tran (pictured right) from Longton Lane Primary. Jessica’s entry has also been printed on large posters which will be displayed around the village around Gala time. Jessica wins a family meal at the Black Horse, Rainhill & Safari Park tickets. Well done Jessica!

The 1st runner up was Maisy Blackmore from St Ann‟s C of E Primary School

The 2nd runner up was Emily Green from Oakdene Primary School

Well done to Maisy and Emily who both receive a teddy and an Easter egg. All three winners will also receive a complementary pass for the funfair at the Gala. Well done to everyone who entered and all the entries were fantastic!!! Look out if you are in Yr5 next year for your chance to enter as all schools in Rainhill will be invited to enter once again. SPECIAL FEATURE

Rainhill Gala Partner

Rainhill Fish Bar Rainhill Gala would like to once again thank Theo and his team from Rainhill Fish Bar who worked so hard last year at the Gala 2009. Theo donated all of the proceeds from his stall to the Gala, a staggering £832 which went a long way towards the grand total donated to Willowbrook Hospice and Rainhill’s local groups. Did you know that the Rainhill Fish Bar does far more than just Fish & Chips? The menu has a vast range of English dishes, which you would expect. But the Rainhill Fish Bar is different as it serves a range of Greek dishes which are all home made daily including Mousaka and Affelia (Pork marinated in wine & coriander). And of course there is the Grilled Cajun Chicken served with chips, rice, salad or in a pitta bread. There’s also a host of other tasty dishes including Jacket Potatoes, Speciality Burgers, Kebabs and more!!! Pop in and see Theo and his team (pictured) at the Rainhill Fish Bar, 570 Warrington Road, Rainhill or phone your order through on 0151 430 9655. Opening times: Mon-Sat 11:30-2pm & 4:30-9pm (closed Sunday) Rainhill Fish Bar proudly supports the Shop Local Campaign 16

Can we help your organisation? Last year we donated over £4,500 to local groups right here in Rainhill. We were pleased that the money went to groups that meant a wide range of people benefitted from Gala cash. A full report can be found on page 5 detailing all the beneficiaries from 2009. This year we are going to do exactly the same with 50% of the money raised from the Gala going to our main charity, Willowbrook Hospice and 50% staying right here in Rainhill. We aim to award money to groups in Rainhill who may find it difficult to find funding elsewhere. We don’t have the same criteria as some funding providers, the dreaded 30 page form, nor do we discriminate either. We do however insist that for a group to be eligible, that the entrance or joining requirements are not overly restricted and that the group operates in the interest of many people. Pictured below is the Rainhill United Under 8’s team who were looking for a kit sponsor, and as this benefits many children, we considered this to be a worthwhile cause and awarded them £450 to buy a new football kit. We don’t know how much we will be able to award this year, if anything, however any surplus funds will be divided between Willowbrook and local causes. If you would like to apply for funding, please apply online at

www.rainhillgala.co.uk/funding The form is just one page and only asks basic questions. We will then email you by the closing date of 1st July 2010 to let you know if we will be looking further into your application. We will of course need to verify your group and someone from Rainhill Gala will need to come along to one of your group meetings. Terms and conditions apply, these are available on our website and we promise to reply to all applicants.

Special thanks go to Golden Triangle Power Generation for supplying the power for the Rainhill Gala 2010

It’s A Knockout 2009 The Rainhill Parish Council team, represented by students from Rainhill High Sixth Form, won the 2009 Knockout and lifted the Mike Doyle Memorial Cup. The team battled against 8 other teams on a sunny May afternoon and came in heads above the rest. It was a tough battle but well worth it! If you missed the Knockout last year, then why not look at the video of the event which shows some of the highlights from the competition, just search for Rainhill Gala on YouTube.com to view it online. Videos are also available on our website, www.rainhillgala.co.uk. The competition is an ideal way to build team relationships between friends, colleagues and your fellow drinkers down the pub! The deadline for entry into the competition is still open so why not get a team together and have the most fun you can shake a stick at! We can offer help and advice with fundraising ideas and give you all the forms you need. See the website for more! 24

Special Report No2masts campaigners would like to thank you all for the support that we received last year. At the 2009 gala we collected hundreds of signatures objecting to the erection of masts near our homes, and in particular to a proposed installation in the disused chimney at Kendricks Fold. These petitions were sent to O2. As a result of the campaign, O2 have recognised the feelings of the Rainhill residents, and are reconsidering their proposed plans. They have stated that they are looking for an alternative site, and we hope that they will eventually build the mast in a more suitable area, away from our homes and families. We were really grateful to Rainhill Gala for awarding us £200 which will pay for a scientific report which will help us fight our case against the mast which, it is proposed, will be just 20 metres from a schoolchild’s bedroom window. As the mast in Kendrick’s fold could still be erected, we still need your support! You can find out more and contact us by logging on to our site, nO2masts.com. Barnardo’s Freaky Fabulous Funky Fun Centre (The 4 F Centre) opened its doors during school summer holidays in July 2004. The 4F Centre is an inclusive play centre, which offers a huge range of outdoor and indoor play opportunities for the children of Rainhill, and Disabled children across the Borough of St Helens. The centre is an inclusive play provision which means that we welcome all children disabled or non disabled.

The centre currently runs sessions four nights a week, with 30 children and young people aged between 5 & 15 attending. We welcome new children and young people on a regular basis. If you live or go to school in Rainhill and are interested in coming along, or if you would like to be a volunteer with us please come into the centre and talk to one of our staff or call us on 0151 426 9115.

WE NEED YOU! The Rainhill Gala wouldn’t happen without the support of so many volunteers from our community, and this is where we need you! The Gala committee meets once a month to plan for the annual event, and we are always looking for new members to join our committee. You don’t need any special skills or experience, you just need to want to do something positive in our community. Our current volunteers come from many different backgrounds and together make a wonderful team, but as the old saying goes, many hands make light work! If you don’t want to make a regular commitment by joining our committee but would like to offer a hand, please consider helping us either on Sunday 30th May to set-up or on Monday 31st where there are a number of duties including stewarding, running stalls & raffles and general hospitality.

If you can help, please ring Steve on 07951 324 599 or email steve@rainhillgala.co.uk PROGRAMME DISCLAIMER Rainhill Gala (RG)/Rainhill Gala Events (RGE), its committee or any associated persons or organisation accept no responsibility for the content of this programme and cannot be held responsible for the products, services or conduct of the advertisers contained within this publication.
