British Fashion Council launches Fashion Studio Apprenticeship with David Beckham and Adwoa Aboah

Aline

Designed by a group of fashion employers, with the BFC, the apprenticeship starts in the heart of a designer business: the studio, to learn how a collection is created. The Fashion Studio Assistant is a key position in the designer industry, working with the team that creates a collection. For the first six months, the apprentice will complete a foundation with will include core elements of the job role such as critical path management and health & safety measure. This will lead to 12 months in a more focussed area of the business, with the apprentice choosing to specialise in one of three pathways: • Product Development and Production • Sales and Operations •

Fashion Marketing and Communications

Following on from the 18-month training the apprentice will undertake an Independent End-Point Assessment that has been derived by industry experts in this field. The assessment will be taken in 2 steps: • Work Based Project (Including Presentation) • Practical Test

“Fashion is an industry that should be open to everyone no matter what their background is or where they are from. I hope that this new apprenticeship programme from the BFC will give even more kids the chance to thrive and be creative." BFC Ambassadorial President David Beckham Background Education is a key pillar of the BFC strategy and is led by Pillar Presidents Sarah Mower and Meribeth Parker, with the aim of attracting the best talent to the industry by giving students a clear understanding of how to study and train for a plethora of industry roles. The BFC Education Foundation raises funds to support students with the ability and potential to make an exceptional contribution to the fashion industry. Its initiatives include the Fashion Studio Apprenticeship, the National Fashion & Business Saturday Clubs, the BFC Colleges Council, the BFC Education

Foundation and the

Graduate Traineeships Programme. The BFC also works on the fashion industry’s skills agenda with UKFT to promote skills development in the fashion sector. Talent is key in fashion, not just design talent, which is traditionally developed through fashion and arts degrees,

The Fashion Studio Apprenticeship is part of the BFC’s Education Pillar which gives young people a clear understanding of how to train for a plethora of industry roles within the creative industries. BFC Ambassadorial President David Beckham and BFC Positive Fashion Ambassador Adwoa Aboah play an integral part in inspiring a young audience from different backgrounds to consider arts education and the creative industries when making decisions about their future. Caroline Rush, BFC Chief Executive commented: “It is incredible to be able to support career opportunities for young people who might not want to pursue higher education. There are a lot of roles out there that need to be filled by skilled workers; the fashion industry is highly dependent on those roles and we hope that this will strengthen our industry and make it more accessible by being able to offer this exciting new Fashion Studio Apprenticeship.” David Beckham, BFC Ambassadorial President commented: “Fashion is an industry that should be open to everyone - no matter what their background is or where they are from. I hope that this new apprenticeship programme from the BFC will give even more kids the chance to thrive and be creative. We have such an amazing fashion industry in this country, it’s something we should really be proud of and protect. These kids are the future, it’s been an inspiring morning.” said Adwoa Aboah, BFC Ambassador for Positive Fashion: “I am proud to be part of an industry that has so many facets to it. The Fashion Studio Apprenticeship is proof that not every role in fashion needs an academic degree and that our industry is one that is open to everyone, no matter their background. It is fantastic to be able to support this initiative.” Joining the visit, BFC NEWGEN designers Richard Quinn and Rosh Mahtani (Alighieri) and Paolina Russo, part of MakerLab Presents: Here to Create project, a partnership with adidas, David Beckham and BFC, a creative platform giving emerging designers a global stage to showcase their work; and Adam Mansell, Chief Executive UK Fashion & Textile Association.

The work to transform the new airport GstaadSaanen into a polo club is already completed and ready to host guests flying in by hilicopter form Geneve or longer distance by private jet to the 24th edition of the Hublot Polo Gold Cup, the most prestigious in Switzerland. The Hublot Polo Gold Cup holds its head high alongside the major European clubs which feature multiple canchas (polo fields). It is rightly proud of its unique difference, offering a highlevel tournament in one of the most unusual & prestigious locations in the world. The four teams that have been invited have confirmed their attendance with, notably, some well-known players and major

captains, The majestic setting a green valley, in the hillside some 1,000m above sea level at Saanen, the only flat area in Gstaad that can accommodate an aerodrome & a polo field. Setting aside the famous tribal polo tournament at Shandur Top in the Hindu Kush region in the north of Pakistan at an altitude of 3, 719m, Gstaad is certainly home to the highest summer polo tournament in the world. 2020 is sure to be an even more beautiful edition as it will be its 25th anniversary. 20.8.- 23.8.

My favourite dining place is L' Ecrin at the Hotel De Crillon on Place de la Concorde. I try to go there every time I visit the City. And for inspiration, there are so many places in Paris but my favourites are the Louvre Museum and the Palais Galleria which is the legendary Parisian fashion museum. Paris is history and tradition and Dubai is modern and glamorous. I love the afternoon cocktail events in Paris and the unbelievebale Dubai night events. Unfortunately when I am in Paris i get so busy that I have very little time left to discover the city. I guess the best way for me to do that is to make sure that when I shoot that we chose different locations so that I can combine work and pleasure."

Eman added about her current base in the United Arab Emirates that: "Dubai is the cleanest, safest and service oriented city in the world. "I am Egyptian and Belgian. I lived in Egypt till after my studies and lived in Belgium for almost 9 years. I feel that Dubai is the right combination of those two countries. Her film 'Louder' was screened in Roxy Cinemas, Dubai. And Eman revealed exciting news for her film fans, disclosing that, "I am still busy shooting my second movie."

Eman's advice in the end: "Don't give up your dreams, keep working on your skills and most importantly enjoy what you do because enjoying your work is more precious than the fame itself."

Swiss Gübelin Pays Hommage to Stuning Colours and Gems of Sri Lanka The fascinating inner world of the rare padparadscha sapphire sets sparkle to Gübelin's new Aurora jewellery

Sapphires are often associated with the colour blue. But sapphires come in all colours of the rainbow. Among the rarest are sapphires in delicate orange-pink or pinkorange shades. This extremely sought-after variety is known exclusively under its own name: padparadscha. The characteristic colouration is reminiscent of a lotus blossom, typical for the flora on Sri Lanka. This is already indicated by its name “padmaraga”, the Sinhalese word for lotus-coloured In addition to the unique bracelet, chandelier earrings, necklaces and rings are available featuringpadparadscha sapphires. The Splendid Feather line also includes earrings, rings and bracelets set with sapphires and pastel-coloured sapphires. Theseversions are available in red and white gold. Both shades of gold can becombined to highlight the modernity of the line. Like every other piece from Gübelin.

“In 2018, my wife and I travelled together with Helen Molesworth of the Gübelin Academy to Sri Lanka. There we visited mines and discovered the land known for its precious gem deposits.” RAPHAEL GÜBELIN, PRESIDENT OF GÜBELIN Splendid Feather bangle This impressive unique piece, set with cushion-shape padparadscha 5.60 ct and accompanied by 59 pastel-coloured sapphires invarious shapes and cuts, is a homage to Sri Lanka’s world of birds. ri Lanka supplies world with rarest gemstones since at least 2,500 years . The mining itself has not changed significantly on the island of gems. Ceylonian traditional mining techniques are encouraged in order to protect the miners and the environment. This island in the Indian Ocean, was the only known home of padparadscha sapphires until other deposits were discovered on Madagascar and in Tanzania. The new Aurora creations are also an homage to the most renowned country of origin for these orange-pink sapphires. Gübelin Jewellery’s unique aesthetic Experienced goldsmiths, jewel setters and polishers create according to Gübelin Jewellery’s unique aesthetic - its Deeply Inspired philosophy, which pervades the company at all levels and stands for the combination of knowledge and beauty. “As a member of the sixth generation of our family-owned company, I am very proud of the way in which we combine beauty, knowledge and artisanship,” says Raphael Gübelin.

Padparadscha sapphires Deep within, padparadscha sapphires reveal characteristic shapes and structures known to gemmologists as “feathers”. The inner world of this precious gem served as inspiration in creating the Splendid Feather bangle. As a further avian reference, thedesigners chose marquise-shape gems, whose convex sides are known as“wings”. At the same time, the marquise-shape gemstones are reminiscentof the award-winning Gübelin designs from the 1960s and 1970s while lending them a contemporary look.

MM: Which retail partners did you choose? Eisa: "The Galleria at Maryah Island in Abu Dhabi was the ideal location for Tharb to launch its first concept store. We selected The Galleria as it is a vibrant destination for the local community and visitors alike. The Galleria offers immersive entertainment and lifestyle experiences, it is truly Abu Dhabi’s next-generation mall and now home to Tharb."

MM: What sets your luxury designs apart?

MM: As a busy man, how is your day at office?

MM: Which design principles do you follow?

Eisa: "I tend to design for a good portion of the day and handle the business of the brand for the remainder. That balance ensures that I develop a product I absolutely feel represents the brand's concept while still making sure we’re pushing the business forward. I often begin my designs through sketching multiple iterations and once I have a concrete idea, I follow-up by experimenting with the design concept on a variety of design drawing programs. Sketch and paper for the initial ideas, then on my iPad for the mock ups followed by Affinity Designer on my laptop for the design drawings. Most importantly though, I present my designs to who I imagine would use the product the most to get their input and then it is back to the design process!"

Eisa: "I am continuously drawn to filling the gap when it comes to functional pieces. I typically start from a simple need then I think of the added features to enhance the product. My design process originates from being in situations be it a meeting or simply running errands and pondering over what product would be useful and yet encompass an elegant and minimalist aesthetic in each scenario. For instance,

Eisa: "I continuously look to combine luxury with practicality and maintain a minimalist design approach. My inspiration when designing new pieces is often derived from my own needs of wanting a piece to have enhanced usability and I go to the drawing board from there. The motivation is always about the functionality."

Mayed which is a notebook sleeve goes beyond being just an elegantly designed leather notebook sleeve. It started with the need for me to carry most of my essentials in and out meetings. Not only does it carry a notebook, it also has a generous outer pocket for essentials such as keys and a phone. It also has various slots for small notes, cards, a dedicated pen and eyewear holder."

O T

Eisa: "I receive clients who provide their input on the products and I truly appreciate their comments because it is how we grow and expand as a company. I am also my own harshest critic and I try to imagine all possibilities for any given product. Often, I tend to have anticipated a person’s critique or comment but I eagerly welcome all feedback and thank everyone who has given me their opinions since inception."

MM: What was response from clients?

T E G

Eisa: "The design of Tharb leather goods encompasses a minimalist approach and are practical for travelling or simply going to the mall. My aim is for Tharb to have a global reach, spanning from the streets of Manhattan to the dunes of Abu Dhabi."

Occasionally, I will find that the sample product is not how I imagined it to be. From a design concept to a physical sample, there are small variations that can occur. However, those variations may not be a bad thing simply because it wasn’t planned. It sometimes happens that those variations give rise to inspirations and developing new ideas, which was the case for a few unrelease items. However, I would take those unique ideas about them and apply them elsewhere."

P U

MM: Which segment of luxury consumer do you seek reach with your new product?

MM: Are your products made in UAE? Eisa: "The UAE's manufacturing industry is still in a stage of growth and so there are not many luxury leather manufacturers. We were able to team up with a great company who manufactures with impeccable precision. I am honored to say all our products are made with pride in the UAE.

M O R F

Eisa: "My inspiration has always been rooted in finding materials that are renowned for their quality and durability as well as style and timelessness. That is why the pieces that I have designed are made from Tuscan leather in addition to other high-quality materials such as marble and suede. The strength and resilience of these materials make the products extremely practical to use, not only for everyday use but also as incredible statement pieces. I’m also inspired by architecture and the constant rule that whatever the product features, it needs to serve a purpose and not only an aesthetic choice. The design process is very iterative, and I enjoy the happy accidents along the way. What I have in mind in the beginning is not always what I end up releasing and I believe that is part of the magic of product design. At the end of the day, I won’t release anything that doesn’t meet my own standards. As for reaching a segment, I haven’t focused on developing my products for a particular consumer but rather producing luxury goods that any consumer would find functional and would be proud to wear."

my passion for design and the ongoing positive response is why I opened the first concept store at Al Maryah Island. Tharb is a perfect fit on Al Maryah, as it encompasses a similar model of being unique and offering originality."
