At the time there were not 61 channels of network content to put on it, so I called the studios and said I would air their trailers free of charge We created a separate channel for trailers When we did the audience surveys the trailer channel always ranked high on the list of channels that people enjoyed A few years later the Toronto company sold out and I was not about to return to cold weather anywhere so decided to stay in Southern California My friend Alan Mruvka came up with this idea of doing "MTV of movies" and I said “wait a second, instead of standing up a VJ in front of music videos we can do the same with movie trailers”. Alan and I refined that idea and that started our thinking and eventually we thought we would become Entertainment Tonight 24 hours a day, but with a much hipper and modern presentation geared to a younger audience. - The concept of E! was born. At first, we called it MOVIETIME but then changed it to reflect the broader content offering We wrote a business plan and set out to raise money, but soon realized that just because we had a great idea it was very hard to get anyone to take us seriously Only big media companies could launch TV networks and the thought of two individuals being able to was unthinkable at that time.

Mr. Namer is the Co-founder of E! Entertainment Television, a company now valued at over five billion USD, and the creator of several successful companies in the United States and overseas Among those companies are Comspan Communications that pioneered Western forms of entertainment in the former Soviet Union and Steeplechase Media that served as the primary consultant to Microsoft’s MiTV for developing interactive TV applications. He has recently launched BTYKWN (Pronounced Beauty Kween), a gender-free virtual makeup community Tell us about how you launched E! Network

I was working for a Toronto based company building the big cable system in Los Angeles called Valley Cable TV. It

The biggest challenge was that no one believed that a TV network could be launched outside of the well-established media conglomerates It took us three and a half years to convince an investment group to give us 2.5 million dollars which was still far short of the 60-100 million media companies were spending back then Being naïve, Alan and I said we will figure out how to make it work and I called a friend teaching radio, television and film at UT Austin and he sent us a bunch of young students to fill Summer intern slots So, we launched with only 11 employees and a whole bunch of interns that were so excited to be a part of something new and next Once we went live, we were proclaimed an overnight success.

Tell us about BTYKWN.

BTYKWN (pronounced BEAUTYKWEEN) is a fresh concept that really excites me for many reasons It is a true next generation brand in my opinion. BTYKWN is the first ever gender-free digital community for makeup superfans And it’s all about empowering the younger generation to be themselves and continue to be confident in doing so

Many kids feel like they don’t fit in-so BTYKWN COM gives them that digital place to engage in their makeup

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

enthusiasm with other like-minded individuals that all want to stand out We have so much fun stuff planned BTYKWN, it is all very cutting edge

Does BTYKWN has the power to change the planet?

As we focus in on the younger generation it certainly has the power to change the way we think of gender norms and self-identity with BTYKWN. So yes, with some glitter and glam we will definitely try our best to change the planet and the makeup industry forever.

You have joined the AAPI Community on fundraiser for feature film, Go Back To Your Country, sharing personal stories of AAPI Individuals who have been victims of racist assaults and xenophobic hate crimes. What led you to this project?

For the past decade, I have been doing a lot of work in Asia (particularly China) and have gotten to know many people I realized that they have the same hopes and dreams we do here in the US and while our governments may disagree on a lot of things, we have more in common than we have differences. I mentored several Asian graduate students when they were at USC and stayed in touch with them One even made me godfather to her son which I take rather seriously It appalls me to see her and her husband both working here in the US, paying taxes faithfully, gainfully employed, home owners, and basically ideal citizens who love this country, get heckled and abused by ignorant people who don’t have the brains to realize that this country was built by immigrants.

Tell us about Go Back To Your Country and why this is important now.

This will be a feature length documentary about some of the ridiculous and unwarranted hate being spewed at anyone who even looks Asian regardless of their country or origin It is designed to make people aware of the problem and hopefully they will join in the movement to put an end to this

“APPI’s are being marketed but not part of the conversation.” Explain.

I think that particularly in America we confuse the acts of governments with the basic good of the people and our commonality As a minority Asians seem to get lumped together as one ( they are not) and are not seen for the

great contributions they make to our society and our country.

What is your mission for your film?

I think a lot of people are very unaware that there is a problem and it is nonsensical This film will bring awareness and hopefully mobilize people to call it out whenever they see if

Who is on your team for the documentary?

Charles Tseng, Marina, Dr Jen Lee, Risa Morimoto are the primary folks but there are a dozen or so more that have jumped in to help. Thatch Namer (no relation) has donated a gourmet dinner at her San Jose restaurant for us to use for our fundraiser.

Ihab Jiryis

Ihab Jiryis (this page and right) is a Palestinian Arab based in North Palestine, who prides himself for his Brand IHAB JIRYIS, evening wear and exquisite Couture Gowns Ihab’s passion for fashion has been since he was a child, he has always enjoyed sketching designs Ihab holds a first degree in fashion design from Shenkar College

He has developed his own Avant Grade label for 12 years now, he felt it wasn’t enough for him, he pursued his studies and achieved two Master's degrees; Masters in theatrical and cine, professional in dress and decor design and the second master is Master of Design Program, M Des design Ihab Jiryis as a fashion designer believes and acknowledges the power of the dress; the dress speaks to the audience and reflects our personality Ihab Jiries believes that the dress identity comes from small details and superior quality of elite finish Ihab’s collections have always been met with praise and showered with compliments for his unique innovations and designs All images courtesy of the artist

. Ihab Jiryis is quoted for his manifest where he says “your dress is your second skin, your natural skin is organic and your second skin should be a royal covering that protects it”.

Jules: You took on the challenging concept of “fashion and death” with your fall winter collection. What compelled you for this dichotomy?

Ihab: Talking with the Death Beyond goodbye Talking about death is a scary thing. All of us can relate to that! We’ve all felt upset, uncomfortable or awkward when the topic is approached, which leads us to avoid it in the future. Although our intentions are usually good, and we don’t want to cause any upset, in the long-run the consequences can be difficult to deal with We understand that talking about death is a bit of a taboo. Yet, when we talk about it, we actively help to break down those barriers, and make it that bit easier and acceptable for people. I believe that when we are able to face death openly, and approach it peacefully and positively as a natural part of life, we will feel empowered to live our days to the fullest The collection was inspired by a study of fashion and death We are all aware that there is a parallel between the human body and clothing Because, like a perishable body, the garment ages over time. Just as fashion is timed and limited, so is the human body; when it is damaged, it becomes less desirable, oppressive, and loses its vitality and beauty.

In today's western amber, fashion speaks of power, strength, aesthetics, beauty, and indulgence rather than death. Death in the fashion world is expressed on many levels, including perceptions of body and garment I chose to express the human body and present it as aesthetic and beauty values in the collection I created Beyond being aesthetically pleasing, functional, and wearable, the collection evokes various feelings and sensations such as compassion, softness, bridal, and tenderness, as well as sadness, rigidity, and roughness These emotions were created by combining various materials, fabric developments that I created, with unique cuts Without any need for phrases, the feelings are communicated to both the viewer and the user.

Jules: What challenges have you faced along your journey as a fashion designer?

Ihab: Boys play with trucks; girls play with Barbies This is what I was taught as a child. But this was not my truth, the truth is; I secretly played with my sister's dolls as dressing them up was my favorite thing to do. I remember very vividly that day when my younger sister caught me cutting

"The sustainable fashion movement is becoming more popular in today's fashion world. Mass production has become unacceptable, and consumers are demanding that companies stop disregarding the environment. Companies that recycle used clothes are also becoming more popular. The fashion industry has changed from being a necessity to something that's used for aesthetic purposes. It's expected that things will turn out well for the industry."

and gluing her doll's extra little clothes And that's when the dream of pursuing my passion in fashion began But with every dream comes a challenge, and oh boy my challenges were many, too many! Where to begin? Let's begin with the close circle challenges then move to the wider ones

A boy (who's soon to be a 'man') born and raised in a small traditional typical Arab-Palestinian village in the Galilee, is expected to be everything BUT a fashion designer (or a dancer, or a makeup artist, or any "feminine" hobby or career of that matter) My parents, the family, relatives and even the neighbors, they all expect you to pursue a 'manly' education and career And if you're to be academically achiever like I was then it's a doctor, lawyer, engineer, or accountant

My parents were very assertive and harsh when it came to my education and career, harsh enough that they almost shattered my dream apart but that's not their fault, it's just the way it was in our community back then after high school graduation I went to study computer science at the university, my body was at the faculty of science, but my heart was beating for fashion Until one day I had enough, no more hiding my passion, no more suppressing my dream! Fashion and design school, here I come! I dropped out of the science faculty and 4 years later I proudly graduated from my first (and NOT last) fashion-design degree Now what? What can an Arab-Palestinian young man in Israel possibly do with a fashion degree? Finding a job in Tel Aviv was not an option, they'd never hire me! Open my own business? How can I with absolutely no money? Until one day, a small window opened to me

A friend of mine asked me to design her dream wedding dress. And there it was, my first wedding gown and it was beautiful! And just like that, my phone started ringing, receiving orders for costume made wedding and evening dresses

Step by step, with very little and so few sources, the name of Ihab Jiryis grew, and my business started growing, very very slowly with tons of financial difficulties, but steady and proud And all this magic happened (and still is) from the basement of my parents house in the very same village I was born and raised in; Kufr Yasif With every dress my passion grew more and more, and my lust to dig deeper and know more about the world of design and fashion grew bigger, that's when I decided that I want to pursue my academic studies in fashion and designs Back to school for Master of Design (MDes), the more I learned the more I wanted to learn more, so after I was done with my first MDes, I found myself studying for another one; this time in a field that has always fascinated me: Theater! Another MDes in Theatrical and Cine; dress and décor. And now, as my passion for academic studies grows, I am about to finish my PHD in design The first ever Palestinian designer to hold a PHD degree in fashion design

So between my business, having developed my own Avant Grade, my own brand in which I combined my two worlds; the world of fashion and beauty and that of high academic studies of design, I found myself getting closer to my dream. Or so I thought… but then the biggest challenge ever has appeared, like a very thick wall which seems impossible to get through. Years upon years I've proudly watched amazing fashion designers from the Arab world reach far and proudly raise the name of their countries high, being proud of their hometowns and proud of their passport Today, we Arabs are honored by the names of many Arab designers who have conquered the world of fashion and design And there it was, having established my name at my home occupied Palestine, or what is known as Palestine 48 (Israel) among my Arab-Palestinian community within the 'green-line' and in the WestBank, and having successfully pursue my academic studies, my next move was naturally wanting to dress the amazing women of the Arab world How can I? With my problematic passport and challenging identity, how can I dress and meet the beautiful Arab women all over the Arab world? How can I get the chance to be heard and to be able to proudly represent my Palestinian people, especially those whose voice have not been heard for many many years now; us the proud Palestinians who live within the green line

Jules: What is the connection between the inside of us human-what happens within us psychologically-and the outside, through clothing?

Ihab: The concept of dress refers to the influence it has on others, its relationship with the body, and one's behavior The concept of dress refers to the transmission of information about one's identity A person's choice of clothing can have a significant influence on how others perceive them Your appearance can make or break a person's first impression. A person's choice of clothes can influence how others perceive them The dress is a stimulus that can be used to describe one's identity and behavior. It can also influence others' attributions and relationships between the body and self.

The type of material, shape, and style of clothes that a person chooses can have a significant impact on their emotions The way they feel about themselves can also be influenced by the clothes they choose. Various sociological and cultural theories have tried to give conflicting explanations regarding the motives of human clothing. For instance, some believe that dress is motivated by modesty, while others claim that it is also motivated by sex Despite the environmental conditions that determine the purpose of clothing, its form is determined by a person's own characteristics and mental traits The forms of clothing are influenced by various social and physical conditions Some of these include sex relations, costume, class, religion, and caste

The concept of dress is founded on the idea that a person can express his or her subjective social sentiments through the use of clothing The development of this concept is carried out through the cultural and psychological aspects of men

Jules: Your designs have been described as ultra-feminine feel with nostalgic elements Tell us about your recent collection.

Ihab: My recent collection: The Ethereal type is a type of beauty that exists, but most systems don't allow it It's feminine in appearance, it has sexual or youthful features

For me fashion, ethernal means sheer and delicate textures, fabrics that breathe and shine, and angelic, elegant motifs youthful vibe is enhanced by the flutter sleeves and the sheerness of the fabric The feathers, light-as-air fabrics, and intricate details that are featured in garments are what extraterrestrials are most fond of They look like they're wearing clothes that are made out of clouds, mist, stars, and moonbeams

Jules: What is essential for the dress?

Ihab: One of the most important factors that a person can consider when it comes to dressing to impress is to show who they are This is done through expressing themselves through their own style

Your first impression is likely to be influenced by the colors that you're wearing. Color can have a huge impact on how you feel and look, and it can make you stand out from the crowd. Wearing vibrant colors can also help you attract people

Getting ready for your own body type can be a nobrainer, but there are times when we tend to avoid it altogether. It's important to take a good, hard look at your body to see if it's still what you want it to be One of the most important factors that a person can consider when it comes to their body type is to love their every curve This will allow them to look their best, regardless of their size

Your personal scale can help you put together outfits that are appropriate for you. It can also determine the size of your jewelry and how wide your belts are Getting to know yourself and what's really important to you will help you create an outfit that will make you feel better about yourself. Having this knowledge will allow you to make an informed decision when it comes to your wardrobe.

Jules: Share your asymmetrical flounce pieces with a retro-inspired flare What was your inspiration?

Ihab: There is an extreme amount of difficulty and commitment when a job requires both reality and imagination You have to combine two complete opposites to create something new and self-manufactured. A job that includes this requirement is Fashion Designing When reality is based on what you can see and touch, and imagination is something from the mind and its creativity, something absolutely spectacular can be made.

Everyone desires that imagination becomes reality, and in some ways, parts of it really do With the world alternating persistently, we all try to escape the reality we find ourselves in and find ourselves in the world of imagination However, this pushes us into a state where we find ourselves slowly disconnecting from reality and allowing imagination to be what you believe in In my new collection, I manifest my ideology visually by drawing sketches and designs that will collate these two worlds, these two worlds can’t exist without the other they complete each other and they cannot be identical We will witness in my collection so many things that harmonically contradict the other like exposed and covered, colors that are completely different, fabrics that is plain and others that are embroidered. I have used various kinds of fabrics; silk chiffon designs that are loose to cover body shape and others that is tight to boost body figure I sincerely believe in the power of the dress and the styles that express ideas and emotion that mirror and reflect what we have in our hearts and brains

Today, fashion is still relevant and will continue to evolve as long as there are people who are willing to try new things The industry is full of promise and creativity, ihabjiryis com

An interview with

Alpina

The Alpina Gstaad, situated in an ultra exclusive Swiss chalet resort surrounded by the beautiful Saanenland peaks, celebrates a decade of superior and sustainable hospitality What makes the hotel so cosy and familial 'a home away from home' is its exceptional, international team In our interview with Chef Othmane Khoris, we discover the philosophy and high standards saturating his work as well the effort of the entire team. Chef Othmane joined Alpina Gstaad a year ago, bringing to the Alpina Gstaad his cosmopolitan experience from destinations like Dubai and the renowned Parisian patisserie Stohrer, founded in 1750

Where did your love of pastry begin?

Othmane Khoris: It was my grandmother who had a bakery, and my father took it over later I was only 4 years old when I started to play around in the pastry laboratory I think I have always wanted to do that since then

Where did you gain your first experience before taking the position in Gstaad?

My first experience was at Stohrer, in Paris, which is the oldest pastry shop in France, it was founded by King Louis XV’s pastry chef, Nicolas Stohrer

What are the advantages and benefits of having such a unique work environment as the award-winning Alpina Gstaad, dedicated to working with mindful luxury?

It is an incredible chance, really. A few years ago, I was working in Dubai, and let’s say that sustainability and food waste were not really topics! It is incredibly challenging and exciting to do my job with sustainability in mind How to use all the products, even the usually non-edible parts, and get to know and use local products instead of the typical luxury ones that I’m used to working with... Yes, I would really say it is challenging, and I love that!

The
Gstaad celebrates its tenth-year anniversary
Chef Othmane Khoris Gstaad, Switzerland
"For this winter season, we have desserts with an interaction with the customers, where I finish the dressing of the plate at the table, in front of the customers... This is, I feel, what they really enjoy—getting to talk with the people behind these creations, talking about our producers, the products, and also about ourselves and our own experiences."
- Chef Othmane Khoris

Where did you gain your first experience before taking the position in Gstaad?

My first experience was at Stohrer, in Paris, which is the oldest pastry shop in France, it was founded by King Louis XV’s pastry chef, Nicolas Stohrer.

What are the advantages and benefits of having such a unique work environment as the award-winning Alpina Gstaad, one of the best Swiss luxury hotels, dedicated to working with best practices in mindful luxury and maintaining a holistic approach to sustainability?

It is an incredible chance, really A few years ago, I was working in Dubai, and let’s say that sustainability and food waste were not really topics! It is incredibly challenging and exciting to do my job with sustainability in mind. How to use all the products, even the usually non-edible parts, and get to know and use local products instead of the typical luxury ones that I’m used to working with Yes, I would really say it is challenging, and I love that!

What is your leadership/management style? How many people work on your team?

I hate micromanagement! I am always pushing my team to take responsibility I spend a lot of time training them as soon as they arrive at the hotel so that they can be autonomous during the daily operations We currently have four people to run all the desserts at the Alpina Gstaad

How important is a sustainable approach in your profession today in Switzerland? (Does the demand for sustainable portions come from the guests, the employer, or both?)

It is not different from 10 years ago We constantly hear about sustainability as if it were a novel concept. But, in reality, paying attention to the provenance of products and attempting to support and use the most local ones... using as much of one product as possible while avoiding food waste...I mean, this is how our grandparents lived and cooked! I think that everyone is pushing us to work sustainably, guests, owners, my chef...

How many of the ingredients in your recipes are produced locally, and where do you get some of the most commonly used ingredients? Which are your current favorite flavor combinations?

I try to use as many of our local and regional products as I can, mostly dairy products. We were currently working on a Swiss chocolate and pin cone dessert! I can’t wait!

Chaumet's Wa

Chaumet celebrates more than two centuries of fine craftsmanship and savoir-faire that adorn some of the most stylish women in the world Chaumet's new high jewellery collection was presented this July in Paris with prominent guests attending and cinema stars.

Since its foundation in 1780, Maison Chaumet has drawn inspiration from the elements of nature, among which water and flora play a major role Currently, the Maison's heritage of savoir-faire and craftmanship is highlighted in the large exhibition 'Botanical –Observing Beauty' in a collaboration with the Beaux Arts de Paris at the BeauxArts de Paris Crossing visions, eras and media, this original exhibition highlights the natural world that is represented and celebrated through the universal lens of art and beauty Chaumet masters the anguage of art and with this new collection, the Maison conveys the sea wisper to jewellery-

making The Maison debuts a High Jewellery collection for the first time entirely inspired by the sea.

The Chaumet's sea contains unseen aquatic flora and fauna beauty, and Maison's contemporary gaze transforms this world through rich colour blocking, in elegant sea horse shaped ladys watch, or sea shell brooche, with determined linear geometrical motifs, and flowing corals, all richly embelished with superior traditional crafts of gemmsetting. For its aptly named "Ondes et Merveilles de Chaumet" High Jewellery collection, the Maison pays homage to the rich sea world and introduces a unique jewellery language of the sea The new High Jewellery collection, which is also an extension of Torsade de Chaumet, the Maison’s previous High Jewellery collection

The Comète des Mers parure (above) adapts the reflection of stars in the sky glistening on the sea bed Rising on a ball ring with a pearl body, an exceptional, almost round, natural pearl pairs the infinite delicacy of its pale blush pink hue with its extraordinary weight of 55 grains The brilliance in its multicoloured star comes from a fascinating inner life of a treasured padparadscha Padparadscha sapphire, famous for its majestic orange-pink hue on the outside and the refined interior shades in pink, adds to the translucent sea theme

The notion of waves and movement is also explored in the undulating necklaces through the interaction of volumes, heights, and diamond cuts.

Chaumet colours the collection with the seas In the story of the house, the Déferlante parure which captures the Maison signature such as head jewels, the toi et moi and the tiara are redesigned to be worn in a contemporary way: Several different looks are possible thanks to a full line of the one-of-a-kind transformable pieces: a head jewel becomes a brooch, a sautoir transforms into a short necklace, the climber earring has two ways to wear it, and the 6.05-carat diamond transforms from a ring covering the finger bone to a solitaire mount. The sixty-nine works in the Ondes et Merveilles de Chaumet collection capture the splendor and diversity of the oceans around the globe The colored stones translate the journey The voyage is translated by the stones that colour the collection with all the nuances of the seas Each has its own story to tell, but all convey an emotion arising from an encounter with the Maison’s gemologists

Louis Vuitton Unveils Spirit

High Jew ellery Collection & Cate Blanchett

as House Ambassador

Louis Vuitton takes High Jewellery one step further and proposes a variety of looks that are not constrained by old social notions about women

The very essence of Louis Vuitton’s spirit is captured in the boldness, novelty and singular intensity of the fourth High Jewellery collection by Francesca Amfitheatrof, the Maison’s Artistic Director Spanning 125 spectacular pieces, Louis Vuitton Spirit is an initiatory jewellery odyssey, infused with the power of mythological creatures The Maison’s largest ever collection, required over 40,000 hours of work in the Parisian ateliers “Like a phoenix, the

Louis Vuitton woman exudes amazing strength, energy and optimism,” says Amfitheatrof To express all the vitality, triangle shapes and Vuitton Vs are omnipresent, forging a new, modern and high-impact visual language “It reads as the Vuitton V and resembles an arrow, which was the earliest graphic symbol ever created by humans ” It took three years to source and bring together a magnificent tsavorite weighing over 65 carats with perfectly matched sapphires from Sri Lanka, emeralds from Colombia, rubies from Mozambique, and flawless diamonds, that make up this historic collection, LouisVuiton.com.

VALENTINO

The Fall Couture collection continues to go further back to the roots of this discourse and Piccioli aptly named the new collection 'The Beginning' Appreciating how the couture is a way to celebrate body and individual, Piccioli adapts the most iconic part of Rome - the Spanis Steps to present the most sophisticated and dreamy looks which prompted American

The

Vogue editor Anna Wintour to jump at the end to give him and the atelier a standing ovation, because this show is as much a celebration of the so-calle petite mains, who followed the Creative Director to receive acknowledgement at the end of the show on a warm Roman night previous show held at Valentino’s gilded salons on the Place Vendôme, and its intimacy was replaced by the grandeur of the Eternal City. Masterful colour blocking is in Valentino's DNA, this time crowned by Irish haute couture miliner's feather hats and pieces, which would undeniably thrill one of his most loyal collectors and late muse Isabella Blow, see also Valentino com By N Ahmet ANATOMY OF COUTURE Spring Haute Couture show by Pierpaolo Piccioli for Maison Valentino questioned the feminine figure as a socio-anthropological construct
