Gee speaks out on need for action and Cabonne grant needs
Rozzi Smith There are many community opinions about how to prevent floods, flood mitigation ideas, how to remove the fallen trees and other rubbish deposited by recent floods, buy-back of flood prone housing/ commercial areas, the reason upon the town. While the Prime Minister, had announced for levy banks (do they work), grants of up to $50,000 for small businesses and community warning sirens of rising not-for-profits, Mr Gee said it was a “positive” water levels, who to call during announcement, but it will get harder. “Eugowra, Cabonne and Forbes, they need all the help they can get,” he said. “I think it is a positive start but we’re going to need more. There’s a huge amount of work here to do in terms of supporting the community, financially, in terms of their mental health and also in terms of infrastructure.” While the Premier said that he would like to see the town rebuilt in a more resilient way, Mr Gee said “I have a concern that once the spotlight leaves Eugowra and Cabonne, there won’t be as much support coming in and people here are going to continue to struggle greatly. “The challenge for us here in our region is to continue to support and make sure it’s here for the long-term. It’s going to be a long-term struggle.”
Andrew Gee, local Federal Member for Calare, has been incredibly active since the floods hit Cabonne. Andrew’s facebook pages have recorded his activity along with a stream of marvelous interviews and stories from affected citizens and businesses from Eugrowra, to Molong, Forbes and beyond. Here Andrew reports on the need for action now and post recovery. “It was a massive night in Molong last Friday night with a huge crowd turning out to support the town after the devastation of the storms and floods. Molong’s definitely on the move again! Please continue to support the local busineses of Molong and Cabonne as they get back on their feet. They need us and your support does make a difference. Molong can’t keep going through these storm and flood events. It’s taking too much of a toll on residents and businesses. The NSW and Federal Governments need to urgently get some experts in to look at these rail bridges/overpasses along the creek and rail line and modify them to get the water flowing and stop it backing up in big rain. We can’t stop major storms but we can minimise the impacts. Canowindra is having exactly the same issues. And weeks after this disaster hit Molong and the other communities of Cabonne still haven’t had Back Home grants approved or announced. These grants provide residents with up to $20,000 to help them get back into their homes. It’s hard to believe, given all they’ve been through, that our communities could still be waiting for this support. Kate Strahorn and the #rebuildmolong team have a GoFundMe page where you can continue to show the love for Molong. https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-rebuildmolong” Last Tuesday week, Mr Gee was at the Eugowra Showground with The Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese and the NSW Premier, Dominic Perrottet, in the midst of the devastation visited

Protecting Cabonne Communities
MOLONG EXPRESS, Thursday 8 December 2022
flood (fire, natural disasters) etc. Floods in Molong, Cudal, Cumnock, Manildra, Eugowra and across the Cabonne region have come and gone. With the highest rainfall on record - the La Nina year of 2022 has created a major concern in Cabonne communities that a “she’ll be right” attitude, a simple shrug of shoulders, and simply stalling answers to the hard questions is no longer allowable. We must act from now to make sure that Cabonne residents, their homes, communities, public assets, businesses, sporting facilities etc. are better protected. The deaths of two Eugowra residents, plus the incredible destruction of their town, and that of Molong, Cudal, Manildra, Canowindra, Cumnock, Yeoval and across Cabonne country etc has to be questioned, debated and resolved. Whether or not floods can be stopped is the question. How? There will be much comment, outcry, “I told you so” stuff emerging, now and in coming weeks. We are a little “washed out” at the moment, see photo - but your Express will be onto it all as things evolve.
Christmas Celebrations
The Express heard the laughter first, and then the sounds of happy voices ... "that's sure to be the lovely women of Cumnock" we decided. Poking our head through the sliding doors of the Molong RSL's function room - we caught sight of not only the Cumnock Golf Ladies - but also from Canowindra, and other towns in Cabonne and Orange. Including CWA Ladies, and local identities like Rhonda Watt, Paula Rudd (General Store), a favourite school principal, and great cooks like Jan Gibson (who bakes delicious moments) ... and the Barnes girls (Maureen Murray, Shirley Downey and Sandra Foy). Just to mention a few - we love them all. After one of Ben's delicious cooked lunches - it was time for a game of some kind of card game with fantastic prizes to take home. In fact, no-one was disappointed with their Christmas gifts. Home they went - after an afternoon of good humour, friendship, ... and lots of laughs. The Express loves the opportunity to spend time with these ladies. Merry Christmas

“’Come Out, Were Open’ new campaign for Central NSW”
The communities of Central NSW are making a heartfelt call for anyone put off by the recent floods to ‘Come Out, Were Open,’ in a campaign encouraging locals and holidaymakers to return and enjoy the region at its greenest. While some parts of Central NSW have been impacted by flooding, many were not, and most accommodation and businesses across the region are open and ready to welcome people. Central NSW Joint Organisation today launched the ‘Come Out, Were Open’ campaign to encourage people to wrap their arms around local businesses needing the support of visitors this December and January. It includes digital, social media and public relations. “We’re inviting people to come and do their Christmas shopping and take a short break in one of the most beautiful country destinations in Australia,” said Jenny Bennett, Executive Officer of Central NSW Joint Organisation. This is about helping each other and shopping locally, Aussies have always been great at supporting those in need. One business impacted by the floods is Molong Stores, a retail shop on the main street of Molong, which has just re-opened. Owner Robert Carroll said, “Every little bit helps right now, just buying a coffee puts money in the back
pocket of someone that needs it. We are hurt, exhausted and ready to welcome shoppers.” ‘Come Out, Were Open’ encourages people to not cancel or hesitate. Come to Central NSW to enjoy the lush scenery, food and wine, boutique stores, cooling rivers and pick your own from orchards. “The last few months have been hard for a number of businesses as some travellers have presumed that we’re not open for business, but that couldn’t be more wrong.” said Jenny Bennett. Across social media people are being encouraged to share stories positive stories of support at #unearthcentralnsw. Central NSW Joint Organisation is working with its 10 local government councils to encourage people to visit - locals, visitors and those staying with friends and family. Central NSW includes Oberon, Bathurst, Orange, Blayney, Cabonne, Cowra, Grenfell, Forbes, Lachlan and Parkes. It’s important if you are travelling to plan ahead and only drive to the conditions as extensive repairs are being carried out to bring some roads back up to standard. For more information on Central NSW go to www.visitcentralnsw. com.au #unearthcentralnsw
Night-Time Repairs for the Mitchell Highway between Bathurst and Orange
A 40-kilometre section of the Mitchell Highway will be closed for nine nights over the next two weeks as crews carry out emergency work following recent extreme weather across the Central West. Deputy Premier and Member for Bathurst Paul Toole said the highway will be closed between Stewart Street in Bathurst and Millthorpe Road in Shadforth, with a signposted detour in place along the Mid-Western Highway through Blayney. “Our roads have been hit hard with the recent flood event so it is important that we get this section of road back up to scratch before the summer holidays,” Mr Toole said. “This work will include crucial pavement repairs and several areas of heavy patching to ensure a smoother journey for motorists. “We know many parts of the state’s regional road network has been impacted by extreme weather in recent months and even as we get extra crews out working on repairs, motorists should expect to find areas of severe potholes and badly damaged pavement. “We’re asking everyone to drive to conditions and be aware there may be detours in place due to damage from the weather.” Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Sam Farraway said work was expected to be complete within two weeks with crews working from 6pm to 6am from Tuesday 6 December to Friday 16 December.
“Under full closure our crews expect to get the job done in just nine nights, and the highway will be open during the day to traffic,” Mr Farraway said. “I know locals and freight operators who are regularly travelling between Bathurst and Orange will welcome this news. “Getting our roads back up to scratch is a priority which is why we have deployed an extra 200 people along with equipment such as excavators, trucks and bobcats in the Central West NSW to make sure we reopen impacted roads as soon as possible. “I want to remind motorists though even when you’re driving on roads you’ve regularly used, be aware that they might not be in the condition you’ve previously experienced. Slow down and drive to the conditions as they are now, not how they used to be.” The Mitchell Highway will be closed between 6pm and 6am for nine nights from Tuesday 6 December to Friday 16 December. Access will be maintained at all times for residents and emergency service vehicles. Motorists should plan their journeys, follow the direction of traffic control and signs, and allow about 15 minutes of extra travel time via the Mid-Western Highway detour through Blayney.
Finalising the Business Case for Wyangala Dam Wall Raising of the highest priority for Lachlan communities
Central NSW Joint Organisation is backing calls by Lachlan Valley Water for the NSW Government to finalise the business and environmental cases for the Wyangala Dam wall raising project as a matter of priority. “While the Board support the development of a robust business case for the raising of the Wyangala Dam wall that is evidence-based, transparent, fully accountable and informed by consultation, completion of this business case is now of the highest priority,” says Cr Bill West, Mayor of Cowra. “Having just started to recover from the drought, this flood will have devastating and long-term impacts on our communities and the economy. It is anticipated that completion of the business case will at least provide some certainty and enable planning for both water security and flood attenuation for the Lachlan valley.” The mayors of communities along the Lachlan have been effusive in their praise for WaterNSW in their management of Wyangala Dam through the flood crisis. “WaterNSW are magicians the way they managed the flows out of Wyangala Dam, but the reality is that the flooding of communities along the Lachlan River, while not completely avoided, could have been less extensive with a raised Wyangala Dam Wall,” says Cr Phyllis Miller, Mayor of Forbes. Spills from Wyangala Dam peaked at a record rate of 230,000ML a day, well above flows of up to 125,000 ML seen earlier in November and
more than the previous record of 205,000ML set in 1990. “If only some of this water could have been held back to lessen the flood impact but also to ensure water security for the next drought – which will come soon enough,” says Cr Miller. The State of the Climate Report 2022 released last week highlights the increased pace and intensity of climate extremes across Australia including extreme heat events and periods of intense heavy rainfall. “We’ve been waiting now for decades for a decision on additional storage for the Lachlan valley. It’s time to get this business case finalised so we can plan for our growth and prosperity and embrace the opportunities this region has to offer,” says Cr West.

like sharing it, please do as it would be good to have some sort of activity. Unfortunately I don't think we will be able to use the Bowling Club for a little while so we are looking at finding another venue for the January meeting, there has been a couple of suggestions which we will let you know at the lunch.
Our next meeting is on Tuesday 13th and is our Christmas Lunch at the RSL at 12 noon, don't forget to bring along a donation and I thought that we might now consider giving it to the local Flood relief. Also if anyone would like to sing, recite a poem, tell a joke or a story, or perhaps is doing something different for Christmas and you feel

Molong Christmas Shopping Night It was a night that will be long remembered when some 3,000 locals and visitors headed to the best street party, ever, in wonderful Molong. Thank you to the organisers, the Molong Advancement Group (MAG) and Cabonne Council’s marvellous marketing and events team, traffic supervisors, and set up/clean up team who did not let the recent flood dampen their spirits. As Peter Batten, the enthusiastic Chair of MAG declared after the disastrous flood, “the show must go on” and it did - reaching well and truly beyond

Andrew GEE MP
FEDERAL MEMBER FOR CALARE
PLENTY OF CHRISTMAS SPIRIT ON DISPLAY AT MOLONG XMAS MARKETS!
It was a massive night in Molong on Friday 2 December with a huge crowd turning out to support the town after the devastation of the storms and floods! Thousands of people opened their hearts (and wallets!) to spread good cheer and spend big at local businesses along Bank St, giving the town a much-needed boost! The great support of the Molong Christmas Shopping Night shows that when the chips are down, our region bands together and backs itself. Molong’s definitely on the move again! I ran into the folks from the Cumnock Men’s Shed at the event. They had a great display of handmade wooden chopping boards, hand-carved wooden spoons and stirrers, big tubs of honey and their famous pallet christmas trees! This recovery is going to take years and it’s going to cost big time, so please continue to support the local businesses of Molong and Cabonne as they get back on their feet!

We can’t stop major storms our area. but we can minimise the impacts.
Enough is enough. We can't keep doing this. Fixing the rail bridge will They provide impacted residents with up to $20,000 to repair, greatly lessesn the impacts of storms/flooding. Canowindra is having exactly the same issues. I recently met with Dom Percival who showed me the shocking state of the old rail bridge behind Gaskill Street. It’s been destroyed by the recent flooding, but worse that that, it likely played a big role in causing the town to flood in the first place. The NSW Government can solve Canowindra’s flooding problems in half a day by getting a couple of dozers in on the riverbed behind the CBD and clearing out the old rail bridge, earthworks and debris that are causing the river to back up and flood the town. Don Percival (pictured) and everybody else in the town says it’s a no-brainer.

replace and/or restore housing to a habitable condition. All the government staff at Eugowra can do is take people’s names down and hope the grants will be implemented at some point. It’s
not their fault. This needs to be sorted out at a Ministerial level. I get that governments can move slowly but with all the pollie press conferences and visits Eugowra has had, you would think getting support flowing would be the top priority. What’s the hold up? Our area needs these grants, and we need them now.

Molong Pony Club
Molong Pony Club is preparing to hold its annual Funkhana day Sunday 18th December, which as the name suggests is a day to have fun and celebrate our riders and their progress and achievements throughout the year. The activities and classes will showcase what our riders have learnt and accomplished over the course of each rally day. Over the last few years Molong Pony Club has navigated the weather and lockdowns and still have been able to hold consistent rally days or engage our members in virtual rally days and activities. Riders participated in activities which were videoed and then shared with our members so as a club we could acknowledge and encourage our members progress. Molong Pony Club is a small community minded, family friendly club. The club is supported by a volunteer committee and wonderful members of our community that willingly give their time to our riders for which we are grateful. Molong Pony Club is a great way for riders to learn different disciplines and
horsemanship skills, develop confidence and foster fabulous friendships. Molong Pony Club generally meets on the 1st Sunday of each month. Our club caters for all ages, ability and disciplines and adapts the rally days to suit the members. There are other opportunities each month to participate and represent Molong Pony Club in community events such as Anzac Day, pony club gymkhanas and events and pony club camps. Past and current members and their families are invited to join us at our Christmas Funkhana event and BBQ, Sunday 18th of December, to celebrate our fabulous riders and our great club. If you are interested in joining our wonderful club or would just like to see what our club is all about, our funkhana day is the perfect opportunity to visit. If you would like to attend, please contact Tavia Lyons 0477134615 by Wednesday 14th December or please contact if you would like further information about our club.

Contact one of our Landmark Tablelands Livestock team. Paul Glynn (Molong & surrounding districts) – 0428 168 638 CTLX CATTLE 30 November
Carcoar penned 228 less cattle than last sale resulting in an offering of 1029 mixed quality cattle. These numbers included good lines of medium and heavy weight feeder steers and heifers as well as good pens of heavy cows. All the regular buyers attended to a variable market with lines of better bred heifers to suit restockers slightly dearer and odd sales of
forward medium feeder steers stronger. It was also a processor market with pens of yearling slaughter cattle 330c to 430c/kg. Light yearling steers to feed sold mostly to firm trends with the secondary types cheaper. The better types of medium weight feeder steers were slightly dearer but cheaper on an overall trend. The very heavy feeder steers to feed were included in the yearling feeders still having their two teeth. Limited drafts of heifers to the restockers saw slightly dearer trends although plainer types saw mostly a firm to cheaper trend. As with the steer portion the heavy heifers were included in the yearling feeders as they still held their two teeth. Heavy grown processor steers were cheaper the odd heifer sale slightly dearer. The overall cow market saw a cheaper trend with the top of the cows to 328c/kg. The bull market sold larger numbers with interest in feeder bulls to 539c/kg and the heavy processor bulls to 311c/kg.

WELCOME ANOTHER RATECITY GOLD AWARD 2022 BEST NEW CAR LOAN, SECOND YEAR IN A ROW!
Molong Sunday Golf Notes Sunday at the Royal Molong Golf Course saw only nine players on a pretty good summer morning, ideal for golf. Bruno made one of his rare appearances and reckoned he was shot after the first hole and had to be carried by his teammates for the other eleven holes. He says he won’t be back for a while but he’s always good value so hopefully it won’t be too long. We played a twelve hole ambrose event with four in one team and five in the other. With the drier weather there is much more run in some areas for a well hit shot. The team of five apparently won but it was only mentioned in passing after the bbq and as we were leaving so really it didn’t matter much since I was on the other team. The branch in front of the eighth tee copped a caning from both Scotty and Wilson but Scotty redeemed himself with his next shot. He had previously put his tee shot off the seventh over the road. Michael has taken over from Stubba with his tee shot on the

seventh again sailing over the fence and into the paddock over the road. If he keeps this up they’ll be harvesting golf balls instead of wheat. Thanks to Al and Dave for all the mowing and to anyone else who has helped out on the course. My brother-in-law was saying he was playing scrabble during the week and accidentally swallowed some of the tiles. He’s now experiencing constant vowel movements. He reckons his next trip to the bathroom could spell disaster. He was in the supermarket last week and approached a beautiful woman and asked her could she stop and talk to him for a couple of minutes. “Why do you want me to stop and talk to you” she asked. “Well” he says, “ I’ve lost my wife here in the supermarket and every time I talk to a beautiful woman she appears out of nowhere.” Golf on Sunday, 8.30am for 9am. Everyone is welcome and it would be great to see more players on a Sunday now we have warmer weather.
