We are one - We are Australians

Molong Australia Day Celebrations 2024 26 January @ the Molong RSL Club outdoor verandah and grassy area

A quick walk along Bank Street by Premier of NSW, Chris Minns, with Minister Jihad, State Member for Orange Phil Donato, Mayor of Cabonne Kevin Beatty, and Deputy Mayor of Cabonne Jamie Jones - a coffee at Lime & Stone was how Molong residents greeted the Premier and his visiting party of assistants, staffers etc. when they stopped over for a short visit on Tuesday., Molong residents were keen to meet the Premier as he walked and talked with the locals, visited traders where he could - in what was a very tight time constraint. The Premier's visit was to attend the opening of the newly built temporary Eugowra

10.30 a.m. Bush Music by Geoff Tonkin Morning Tea of Damper and Cockeys Joy (Golden Syrup) 11.00 a.m. Awards Ceremony - Youth of the Year, Community Person of the Year, Group of the Year. 11.30 a.m. Chicken and Champagne Brunch 12 noon onwards Reacquaint with the Molong Portrait Gallery and the Molong Museum Community Childcare Centre that has been moved to All Free - Plenty of room for the whole a 'above the flood line' location. family to join in being part of Molong/ NSW Premier Chris Minns said that NSW needs Australia's Special Australia Day. to catch up to Queensland in how it manages its response after natural disasters - as global warning increases the occurrence and intensity of floods and bushfires. (Above) Phil Donato MP, Premier Chris Minns, Robbie of Molong Stores, Mayor Kevin Beatty, Deputy Mayor Jamie Jones. The Premier mentioned having with Phil Donato and Cabonne Council about how $50 million in flood money (awarded to the Central West) might be used within the Cabonne region We can hardly wait to see on ground outcomes!!

This Week: The dreaded Fire Ants are on their way marching into NSW from Qld. After stowing away on a cargo ship from their hometown, South America. These nastys are on the move, multiplying, stinging, eating, biting, and destroying. This is what they look like. See P.8 for more info. Keep an eye out - they can eat crops, farm animals, and humans. P.8 They'e nasty!

Next Week: The late Inigo Jones and his assistant and successor, Lennox Walker's methods of weather forecasting were based on long term weather forecasting using sunspot cycles and astronomy to predict floods and droughts. P.9 Hunter Walker is the new guru of what appears to be rather successful weather readings.

Australia Day Yabby Races

@ Kim's Freemasons Hotel 8 race format 1st race @ 2pm A fabulous afternoon of fun, music, food, laughter, raffles, with Guru, Fitzy, Deano and the fishers.

Next Week: What is Australia Day? Will it survive? Elizabeth Giffin of the Molong Historical Museum explores where Australia Day came from - the reasons why - and how the day if returned to the original intention - covers all bases of Australia cultural issues today. Should the date (introduced into the Australian calendar of national of events some 30 years ago - be changed? Was it in fact, 'Invasion Day'. Today's opinions have changed about the date, day, time and reason. Tomorrow's opinions are sure to be even more different. What are our readers thoughts? Are we still proud to call Australia our home? Regardless of race, culture, religions, spiritual beliefs etc? What happened to "we are one?" With slightly more than the total Australian population of 50% born in Australia - what changes should be made to include the remaining cultures? molongex@bigpond.net.au

Windfarms : Voices for Cabonne vs RES

Late last year Aaron Pearson (above) and Rachel MacSmith reported for the Express the strengthening debate by landowners of the Kerr’s Creek/Euchareena Road proposed site by a private developer who has been working on the project plan for some years. (Above) the site of the Crookwell Wind Farm. The lKerr’s Creek proposed site/plan is to erect some 63 turbines. Alternative Energy vs Windfarms? What is the answer?

Another great week in Molong, Manildra, Cudal, Cumnock ... in fact right across Cabonne Country where the countryside looks remarkably like Spring. The late Lennox Walker, weather scientist, reported that this year would be not one of drought (as we thought would happen) - but one of showers. Well, hello showers! What will February bring - March, April the rest of 2024? Next week we write up our current research on Inigo Jones, Lennox and we’re trying to gain an interview with the late Lennox’s son, and current science of weather guru, Hunter Walker. Please attend Australia Day in your community. Program in last week’s Express. Have a happy week. Rozzi

residents, state Member for Orange, Phil Donato, NSW Shadow Minister for Regional transport and Roads, Sam Farraway MLC, members of Cabonne Council, as well as On Monday, December 4th the Kerrs Creek wind farm the proponents of the Kerrs Creek wind facility, RES who community briefing took place at the Molong RSL hosted were met with rigorous questions by residents. by the action group, Voices for Cabonne. Unfortunately the answers provided by RES weren’t The meeting was attended by several concerned satisfactory and residents were left unconvinced about the industrial wind facility planned for Kerrs Creek. Some of the primary concerns raised at the meeting were: ● Property values ● Lack of community consultation ● Potential insurance issues ● Transportation of equipment ● Fire hazards ● Compensation All very legitimate concerns that were met with deflection and sales pitches. Supply and lay Carpet, Vinyl, Despite RES stressing the contrary, Vinyl planks and laminate. consultation with the community has Central west area. been severely lacking. One Cabonne No job too big or small. landholder whose land would be No charge for travel. playing host to one of these turbines stated that they had been negotiating better community outcomes behind the scenes. However, when neighboring residents were asked if any of the hosts had spoken to them directly about the project the answer was a resounding “NO” How can we be confident that these cabonnecarpets@outlook.com host landholders are negotiating anything on behalf of the community? And who are they anyway to negotiate on the community’s behalf. Negotiations should be made with the community themselves out in the open, not with a few land holders behind closed doors. There has only been two contributions to the Molong community thus far by RES, a lawnmower and a small contributions to the Molong Rugby club. Hardly, meaningful long term funding for the community from a company who is set to profit handsomely from this project. Surely, an international company can afford a lot more than a lawn-mower and a small donation. At the meeting when compensation was raised, RES’s response was that those affected would get a percentage off their power bill followed by a speel about their community funding Mon - Thu 7.30 - 5.00 program. But that’s not the point, a Fri 7.30 - 4.00 couple of dollars off the power bill and Sat 8.00 - 12.00 a community fund is NOT going to compensate those who are personally We deliver to you affected by this. These kids from the city have no idea whatsoever. 2 Bank St MOLONG by Aaron Pearson, member of the Voices for Cabonne Action Group

Ultimately, the beneficiaries of this project will be Dubbo, it will be Dubbo that benefits from community funding, it will be Dubbo that benefits from the energy this industrial wind facility will produce. Therefore, apart from the handful of landholders whose properties will play host to these turbines, we are the biggest losers in the end. The action group, Voice for Cabonne will be working will all three levels of government to achieve the following outcomes. 1. Halt further development of the Kerrs Creek Windfarm until appropriate community consultation is complete. This is schedule for perpetuity – surely this project can wait until the new guidelines are in. They are rushing it through before they are out because they will be more stringent. 2. Feasibility study into move the whole wind farm project to a location where far less people/dwellings impacted, and the land is of lower agricultural value. Just common sense. 3. Looking at what long-term meaningful commitment for community funding for Cabonne would look like and getting that commitment legally bound. RES clearly has not done their homework. This isn’t like setting up turbines on the Gold coast, this is Cabonne, a regional shire where one of its largest industries is agriculture. This will be an ongoing battle where surrender is not an option. There of course will be those who say that this is for Dubbo, that this not our fight. To them I say, maybe what isn’t our battle today, may very well be our battle tomorrow.

Next Week: Aaron Pearson provides an update on the project

Fire Ants now in NSW Stopping the Supermarket Sting

Red Imported Fire Ants (RIFA) spread by travelling above ground, underground and creating rafts travelling through floodwaters. They are spreading into NSW

Drastic fire ant efforts critical Farmers are calling for a major effort to stamp out fire ants in NSW after the insidious pests were discovered near Ballina. According to the NSW Government, the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) recently detected a Red Imported Fire Ant nest at Wardell, south of Ballina In a statement to media, the government said an incident response team from the National Fire Ant Eradication Program and NSW DPI teams were at the site to gather further information about the nest and destroy the nest with liquid insecticide, and would investigate when the ants arrived and how they got there. NSW Farmers President Xavier Martin said it was another significant breach of the state’s biosecurity controls and called on the government to immediately ramp up control and eradication efforts. “This latest outbreak is a stark reminder of the failure to control and eradicate these insidious pests, the entry of Red Imported Fire Ants into NSW last year demonstrated again the urgent need for increased investment by all governments to support biosecurity,” Mr Martin said. “NSW Farmers has called for greater focus on biosecurity for many years, but we’ve seen a failure at our borders and with the Queensland Government failing to take this problem seriously, we are now facing the spread of an incredibly dangerous pest into our state.

Andrew Gee MP, Independent Member for Calare, has issued a statement saying that “ The recently announced inquiries into supermarket pricing and the Grocery Code of Conduct are positive developments, however they won’t count for much unless laws to prosecute price fixers and price gougers are beefed up. For too long we’ve been feeling the supermarket sting, paying more to put a meal on the table, and getting less change at the checkout. The outrage is also being felt at the farmgate, with the prices paid to producers a far cry from what supermarkets charge customers. With rising shelf prices hitting families hard, and as the gap between what farmers earn and what supermarkets charge continues to widen, retail chains are recording billion-dollar profits. It’s clear that the country’s biggest supermarkets are cashing in on the cost-of-living crisis. Their slick TV ads would have us believe they’re doing all they can to make grocery shopping affordable, when in reality, they’re hiking up the prices. It’s shameful and shocking and should not be allowed to go on. This price gouging has to stop, so I’m welcoming the Senate inquiry into supermarket pricing practices, and the review into the Grocery Code of Conduct. Throughout the cost-of-living crisis, supermarkets have shown us that if we give them an inch, they’ll take a mile. To hold them to account, and stop the supermarket sting, the federal government must also look at strengthening the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) power to investigate and prosecute price fixers and price gougers from all sectors, such as supermarkets,

“Red Imported Fire Ants are a threat to agricultural production and to the landscape of NSW. They can damage agricultural equipment, s t i n g livestock, ruin the natural environment, and pose a serious risk to the health and wellbeing of all people in NSW.” Mr Martin said while a rapid response to the Murwillumbah incursion had been encouraging, it was now clear more had to be done. “We are calling on Premier Chris Minns and Agriculture Minister Tara Moriarty to ensure the NSW Department of Primary Industries has every resource it needs to stamp out these ants quickly and decisively,” Mr Martin said. “It’s critical DPI, with the full support of other critical agencies, can act quickly to eradicate these pests as they did at Port Botany in 2014. “Red Imported Fire Ants should have been eradicated

energy companies and petrol stations. At the end of the day, calling on the ACCC to investigate high prices is nothing more than a soundbite unless you give the ACCC the ability to take real action. Inquiries are all well and good, but if they’re not backed up by action, they are soon forgotten.

We also should keep in mind that the fuse on the inflation bomb was lit by the previous government, with support from the opposition. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, both the state and federal governments went into massive debt in order to “stimulate” the economy. While some programs like JobKeeper were both crucial and effective, the massive cash splash meant that the Reserve Bank basically started printing money to help pay for it all. When you pump that much money into the economy you are always going to get inflation. All of the major parties and the Reserve Bank have let the country down on this issue. It’s going to take generations to pay all the debt back and in the meantime Australians across the country are paying the price with soaring prices for everything. The pain and stress this is causing is enormous. While there is plenty of blame to go around, cost-of-living relief needs to be the highest priority of all levels of government.

20 years ago but successive Queensland governments have failed to act effectively; NSW must step up and show strong leadership on this issue.” People in the Northern Rivers were encouraged to continue vigilance and report suspected fire ant sites to the NSW Biosecurity Hotline at 1800 680 244 or online at www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fire-ants. Fire ants are tiny (2-6mm long) and reddish-brown in colour, are aggressive when disturbed and will sting repeatedly, causing the sensation the victim is on fire. Nests are mounds or flattish patches of soil with no obvious entrance holes, and up to 40cm high.

News In : Opportunities

Youth: Like to make a ‘real’ difference to your lives and others? Read on ...

There are just three weeks remaining for local young people in Years 10, 11 and 12 (or equivalent age) to apply for this year’s Youth Parliament run by the Y NSW. The Y is seeking applicants who have a passion for creating change in their communities from all 93 NSW state electorates to express interest. The Y (formerly YMCA) Youth Parliament provides a unique platform for individuals to actively participate in the democratic process and advocate for issues that they are passionate about. Participants will have the chance to draft, debate, and advocate for mock youth-focused legislation, gaining invaluable insights into the workings of government and policy development. The Y is committed to making Youth Parliament accessible to all young people and welcomes people from diverse backgrounds and interests to apply, with eligible individuals able to apply under a scholarship. “There is no specific experience required to be involved in Youth Parliament. We strive for diversity in the cohort and support individuals facing adversity, marginalisation or disadvantage where possible. This includes representation from rural and remote areas whose unique perspectives play a crucial role in shaping the discussions and policies at the Youth Parliament,” explained interim CEO of the Y NSW Prue Warrilow. Hamani Tanginoa is a proud Wiradjuri, Dharug, Dunghutti, Gooreng Gooreng and Tongan man, and past Youth Parliament participant who is now part of the Youth Parliament team as Youth Voice Coordinator. A passionate trailblazer, unafraid to stand up for the rights of marginalised young people, Hamani Tanginoa began his Y journey as a

Youth Parliament representative in 2018 at just 16. As a Y NSW and Camden Council Young Leader Hamani made history as the first Aboriginal Youth Premier for NSW. “I entered Youth Parliament six years ago with a burning desire to effect change. As a young, gay, Aboriginal man, I have endured discrimination. I wanted to support others with similar experiences by introducing legislation that would empower and educate,” said Hamani. There are many benefits of being involved in Youth Parliament. Youth Parliament provides a unique platform for young people to actively learn about the democratic process and how to advocate for issues that they are passionate about. Each committee is paired with an industry expert and mentored and supported by Y staff and the volunteer taskforce. Throughout the six-month program, participants develop critical thinking and public speaking skills, build leadership skills, gain confidence, form lifelong friendships and more. "As an Aboriginal Youth Parliament participant, this program became the catalyst for my journey in leadership. Today, as a proud coordinator of the Youth Parliament program, I'm passionate about providing the same transformative experience for young minds. This program not only amplifies voices but also nurtures future leaders who will drive positive change in our communities," he added. Why not have a go?

Next Week’s Express or read online ”School Suspensions | A Social Justice Issue” Do you know that children and young people who get suspended from school are some of the most marginalised young people in Australia? This includes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people, young people with a disability and those living in out-of-home care. There are very clear negative impacts on young people who are suspended from school. So, what’s the answer? Read on Y site or next week’s Express

Summer Reading ... ... The oldest known library, dating back to the second millennium BC, in Thebes, Egypt, reportedly bore a sign above its portals in Greek: Psyches Iatreion, translated as “healing place of the soul”. The idea that reading can provide healing benefits is not new, but continues to intrigue readers and researchers.Of course, this doesn’t apply to reading about how to put up the tent, or tidy our piles of The Central West Libraries (Cabonne, Orange, Blayney, etc) recently released its top 10 reads for 2023 (see lists below) with ‘The Wakes’ by Dianne Yarwood the most popular adult fiction book of the year. Orange City Library received more than 91,000 visitors last year and made 178,096 loans in 2023, including 30,999 loans. Orange Mayor Jason Hamling said it was fascinating to discover what books and authors have been popular during 2023. “To see the wide variety of genres and Australian

and international authors the community has been reading across all sections of the community, from children to youth and adults, has been heartwarming and exciting.” s.” ‘The Wakes’ was the feature book for Central West Libraries ‘One Library One Book’ community reading program in 2023, which is testament to the success of the program that features at branches in Orange, Blayney, Canowindra, Cowra, Forbes, Manildra and Molong.

household stuff. When we talk about books that might offer a balm for the soul, we mean fiction, poetry and narrative non-fiction (including memoir). The idea of emotional catharsis through reading is intuitively appealing. But does it work that way? Or do we read for interest, pleasure, escapism – or love of words, or to meet new friends (book characters/authors?) A notable stand-out is the rise of graphic novels with ‘Squished’ by Megan Wagner Lloyd topping the charts for the Children’s fiction list and the popular ‘Heartstopper’ series and ‘Japanese Manga’ series Demon Slayer also high up in the Youth Fiction list. Screen adaptations were also popular, especially Suzanne Collins ‘The Hunger Games’ Hollywood blockbusters. The next big thing will be the Adult Fiction novel ‘Boy Swallows Universe’ by Australian author Trent Dalton when it lands on Netflix this month as a TV mini-series.

Residents of the Molong Hospital joined with staff, the hospital auxiliary, and residents of the Blayney MPS to enjoy a lively and fun performance by Elvis impersonator, ‘ShELVIS’ (Sheryl Scharkie) who was on her way to the recent Parkes Elvis Festival. Elvis, move over... Aussie born - ShELVIS is FANTASTIC, she won national Elvis competition in NZ, and others. Residents of the Molong and Blayney hospital nursing homes loved the concert held in their multi-purpose room. Toe tapping, hand clapping, whistling, singing along ... cuddling Elvis ... brought back many fond memories of their lives. Thank you to Molong MPS Manager, Deb. and Shelly, the whole team of staff, helpers, family members, the Blayney MPS team, Molong Auxiliary members who helped to make the concert a truly memorable time for our communities' cherished senior members. ‘Jailhouse Rock, Love Me Tender’ our wonderful seniors spent two happy hours transported by ShELVIS back in time to their younger days of excitement, clothing, youthfulness, and jiving/rockin’rollin and twist and shout were treasured.

Beatrice Pole of Cumnock, ShELVIS, Vanessa Miller enjoying a cuddle with the star of the show. They loved their signed autograph silk scarves SheELVIS gifted to everyone.

(Below) It was a fun day out for residents of the Blayney MPS who travelled to Molong, via their team of carers, to enjoy a special day out and concert. Well done to Molong MPS Manager Deb - who sent out a ‘welcome invitation’ to these grateful residents. (Back l to r) Barbie, and Christine with residents including Anne, Coleen, Joan, George, Dave and ShELVIS.

REG’S BENCH My girlfriend always laughs during sex no matter what she's reading. - Steve Jobs (Founder: Apple Computers) Instead of getting married again, I'm going to find a woman I don't like and just give her a house. - Rod Stewart There are only two reasons to sit in the back row of an airplane. Either you have diarrhea, or you're anxious to meet people who do. - Henry Kissinger What are the three words guaranteed to humiliate men everywhere? "Hold my purse." - Sandra Bullock The definition of a perfect Wife? - one who helps the husband with the dishes... What makes men chase women they have no intention of marrying? - Well, it's the same urge that makes dogs chase cars they have no intention of driving Teacher: Why were you late? Student: Sorry, teacher, I overslept. Teacher: You mean you need to sleep at home too! Son: I can't go to school today. Father: Why not? Son: I don't feel well Father: Where don't you feel well? Son: In school!

A man was driving along a rural road one day when he saw a three legged chicken. He was amused enough to drive along side it for a while, as he was driving he noticed the chicken was running 30 mph. Pretty fast chicken, he thought, I wonder just how fast it can run. So he sped up and the chicken did too! They were now moving along the road at 45 mph! The man in the car sped up again, to his surprise the chicken was still running ahead of him at 60 mph!!! Suddenly the chicken turned off the road and ran down a long driveway leading to a farmhouse. The man followed the chicken to the house and saw a man in the yard and dozens of three legged chickens. The man in the car called out to the farmer "How did you get all these three legged chickens?" The farmer replied, "I breed 'em. Ya see it's me, my wife and my son living here and we all like to eat the chicken leg. Since a chicken only has two legs, I started breeding this three legged variety so we could all eat our favorite piece." "That's amazing!" said the driver "How do they taste?" "Don't rightly know, can't catch 'em."
