MANILDRA: Craig has made such a good job of the Manildra Post Office since he took over ownership a few years back - he is now expanding taking over the larger double front premises next door in the main street (Kiewa Street) Manildra. The Express delivers papers each week to Brianna’s Coffee/ Food/Newsagency on Kiewa next door to Craig - so we have been watching the progress of this entrepreneurial local man’s new initiative step by step. Whilst we still can’t see through the heavily ‘shaded’ windows hiding indoor progress ... we do know about the fabulous lines available from Australia Post (all kinds of giftware, games, art and craft supplies, books etc. etc.) that adds to Craig’s business success. We can hardly wait to see how remarkable his more spacious new Manildra Post Office will look. Well done Craig.

Yes, coffee is served in Molong after hours. Kim Stojanov of the Freemasons and her friendly team Jenny, Dave etc. will be available during the Freemasons new Bistro trading hours (starting Monday 11 October 5-9pm). Coffee after a meal - before a meal - or an end of the day coffee and catchup with friends, business meetings etc. The even more yummy news is that Carol’s home-made vanilla slices can be served with coffee. And, Kim and the team now make a great Irish Coffee that is totally (totally!) YUM!

Cudal and Molong Shows: You never know what locals will bring in to the baby animal pens and pavilions - or to enter in the different competitions. Children (and adults) love wandering the pavilions and outdoor displays/ competitions at the wonderful 2023 Cudal Show (this weekend, Sunday 10th October) the following weekend (Sunday 17th ) at the 2023 Molong Show. Grab a schedule from the Molong Newsagency and other stores in town (and at the Cudal Post Office) to read all about what you and your family and friends can enter. Animals, flowers, art, photography, cakes, jams, eggs, flowers, plants, needlework, embroidery, sewing ... the list is endless.

(L) All I can say about the damage to the Bank Street/Gidley Street garden hedges is to shake my head, throw around a few expletives, and give in to their planned removal in the new streetscape program. As the consultants commented at one of the consultation processes a few years back when the Express asked why the hedges (and rose gardens) are planned to be removed. The answer - “apparently kids throw themselves into them (the hedges) and destroy them (the hedges)”. Well, might as well save my breath and arguments about the need to retain after this last lot of damage. “Kids”? Express suggests BIG Kids are the problem on their way home.

The Express loves the ‘a-frame humour’ of Steve and the team at H. Hardware (cnr Bank Street/Watson Streets) that we’ve noticed gains plenty of attention. Where do H Hardware find these morsels of ‘punny humour’? As well as from Steve’s own source, apparently travellers, locals, team members bring them in. Changing each day - the Express and countless others are there, each day, to read the new ones. Keep them coming!!

Gee's motion and major speech to House of Reps. on Cabonne disasters

On Monday 9 September in Parliament Mr Andrew Gee [Member for Calare] moved a motion that the House: (1) notes that Australia has endured an unprecedented number of natural disasters in the past two years; (2) recognises the immense hardships faced by people across Australia in the aftermath of natural disasters; (3) acknowledges that the response to these natural disasters by governments and insurance companies has been, in some cases, grossly inadequate; (4) further recognises the invaluable work of organisations that support communities through natural disasters such as our first responders including

the Rural Fire Service, State Emergency Service, Lifeline, Rapid Relief Team, Rotary and Lions; and (5) calls on: (a) Commonwealth and state governments to activate the full suite of disaster assistance and make it available to devastated communities across Australia, including to Central West New South Wales; and (b) the Commonwealth Government to pursue equality in disaster relief that ensures no Australian, regardless of their postcode or economic status, is left behind when disaster strikes.

Speech – 4 September 2023 Ten months ago, the residents of Eugowra, Molong, Canowindra, Cudal, Manildra, Wellington and many places in between had their lives changed forever when unprecedented storms unleashed horrifying amounts of water across our region. Ten months on, and the hurt, pain and sense of loss is just as raw. Six months ago, the lives and livelihoods of residents in the Hill End area were devastated when massive bushfires tore through their homes and farms. Six months on, residents feel forgotten. The feelings of grief and loss in our communities are palpable. While the support from our fellow residents of the Central West and our fellow Australians around the nation has been extraordinary, unfortunately the same cannot be said about assistance provided by governments. For the storm and fire hit Central West, successive state governments have failed to activate joint state and federal support. I again ask in this House: why does the Northern Rivers area have access to the home buyback and retrofit scheme, but the storm and flood hit areas of the Central West do not? Why is it that other local government areas have access to the Community Assets Program to help rebuild their towns and villages, but councils in our region do not? Why hasn't a grant program similar to the Northern Rivers Commercial Property Return to Business Support Grant been announced for our storm and flood hit areas? Why is travelling on our bridges and roads still like being in a war zone? The Nyrang Creek Bridge and the road between Wellington and Dunedoo are still closed. How can it be that in 2023 we are closing roads instead of fixing them? Why are residents in the fire hit Hill End region still excluded from the $75,000 Special Disaster Grants to help them bounce back from those devastating bushfires? Today I ask: why haven't these questions been answered by state or federal government? Since the disasters struck our region, I have repeatedly called on the state and federal governments to activate the full suite of disaster assistance to our flood and fire ravaged communities. It has not been forthcoming. This has been an appalling failure by the major parties. It is a failure by the previous Liberal and National parties government in New South Wales to activate this support when they were in power, and it's also a failure on the part of their federal colleagues in the same parties—in particular, the National Party, which almost 12 months on has only just taken an interest in this issue. It's also a failure on the part of the current New South Wales Labor government, which has the means to deliver this assistance. There is failure too on the part of the current federal government for

not sufficiently pressuring their state colleagues about this urgent issue. This vital support for our region needs to be rolled out without further unforgiveable delay. Our residents are being treated as second-class citizens, and this cannot be allowed to stand. Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, along came the insurance companies. Hundreds of disaster-hit residents and business owners who were eager to pick themselves up and fight on found themselves at the mercy of these companies. From long delays and claims processing to widespread knockbacks, it has taken a massive toll on our region. Change needs to come from this. That's why I called for a parliamentary inquiry into the insurers' response to these natural disasters. To his credit, the Assistant Treasurer visited our region and initiated an inquiry. Thankfully, the community spirit and support has been nothing short of remarkable, and our flood and fire affected residents would not be where they are today if it weren't for the hardworking staff and volunteers at the Rural Fire Service, State Emergency Service, Lifeline, Rapid Relief Team, Rotary, Lions and many others. In previous speeches, I've thanked many of these community heroes. Today I'd like to particularly acknowledge the tireless volunteers from the Rapid Relief Teams of Molong, Orange, Parkes, Cowra, Condobolin and Lake Cargelligo. These wonderful people include: Matt Sangster, Orange team leader; Malcolm Buckland, Condobolin team leader; and Kelvin Scott, Molong team leader. They also include the mighty Molong crew: Thomas Scott, Stephen Sandeman, Brenton Scott, Stephen Gibbs, Cameron Scott and Sam Pridham, Parkes team leader. Rapid Relief Team are a fantastic group of volunteers who set up mobile catering for our disaster affected towns and also fed our fireys during the Hill End emergency. On Eugowra's darkest day, I worked closely with the Rapid Relief Team to get food into the showground that night and feed at least 60 tired and exhausted evacuees. Their kindness and dedication throughout the disasters that have hit our region will never be forgotten. I sincerely thank all volunteers and organisations who have helped our region cope with this traumatic and devastating time in our history. I conclude again by calling on the state and federal governments to activate the full suite of disaster assistance for flood and fire affected residents in the Central West on the double. A failure to do so is not fair, and it's not right. My message to the state and federal governments is to get this assistance moving.

Molong Show Fashion Parade A Fresh Take on Spring Fashion

This year, the newly appointed show committee is bringing a breath of fresh air with the inaugural Peter Fisher Spring Soiree Fashion Parade! The event promises to dazzle attendees with the latest spring fashions and to highlight the thriving businesses that call Molong home. Taking place at 1pm under the Golf Club pergola, the Peter Fisher Spring Soiree Fashion Parade is set to be a highlight of The Molong Show! This year's parade will feature the wonderful businesses that make up the fabric of Molong, offering a vibrant display of their latest spring fashion collections. One of the primary objectives of this fashion parade is to provide a platform for local businesses to shine. From trendy boutiques to charming stores, Molong has a wealth of hidden gems waiting to be discovered. The event aims to showcase the diversity of fashion offerings in the village, demonstrating that Molong has something for everyone when it comes to updating their wardrobe. Committee spokesperson, Kate Greenwood, expressed the motivation behind this exciting addition to the Molong Show: "Our town is filled with incredible businesses that often go unnoticed. We wanted to create an event that not only highlights their unique offerings but also encourages residents to shop locally and support small businesses. Molong's charm lies in its local flair, and we

want to celebrate that." The Peter Fisher Spring Soiree Fashion Parade promises to be a treat for people of all ages. Attendees can expect a diverse range of styles, from elegant spring dresses to casual everyday wear, reflecting the town's evolving fashion scene. Local models will grace the runway, demonstrating just how easy it is for Molong residents to embrace the spring season in style. By attending the Peter Fisher Spring Fashion Parade, you will also have the opportunity to connect with business owners, explore pop-up shops, and learn more about the local fashion scene. This event serves as a reminder that supporting local businesses not only contributes to the vitality of our local economy but also fosters a sense of community and unity. So mark your calendars for The Molong Show on Sunday 17th September, and make sure you don't miss the Peter Fisher Spring Soiree Fashion Parade at 1pm under the golf club's pergola. It’s going to be more than a fashion show it’s a celebration!

The Molong Show committee is still inviting entrants into the 2023 Molong Agshow Young Woman of the year. For further information please contact Wendy Henry at Booful Gifts and Homewares who will answer all of your questions. The aim of the competition is to find a young woman to represent our Molong community and meet other young women from rural and regional NSW. It can be a most rewarding and fun experience and a chance to showcase the wonderful youth of the Molong community.

May 14, 1968 Daily Liberal

On winning her first award, Wendy said "Girl's shouldn't be shy about a thing like this. The contest offers plenty of excitement. It's worth the effort. I met lots of new girls and new people, and made a lot of new friends." (See Wendy's photo below) Molong's Wendy Henry and owner of Booful Gifts and Homewares in Bank Street knows the opportunities and benefits that come when young women step up for the chance to win the title of the 2023 Molong Agshow Young Woman of the Year award. The winner of the 1968 Miss Dubbo Showgirl competition, Wendy (Little) the young woman from Balimore then went on to win the zone titles. She was then off to the Royal Easter Show (Sydney) where she won the sash for second prize. A huge achievement for the country girl that led to new career opportunities from 1968 - and continuing today in 2023.

Sumptuous feast

A sumptuous new feast planned for the Molong Show which will make your taste buds dance. The entrepreneurial committee chefs are planning a Southern slow roast on the spit served with slaw, corn and bread. The Southern slow is slow roast like no other and prepared with all the amazing ingredients to give its own unique flavour, so don’t miss the new food kiosk found near the main pavoilion…. There’s no doubt about the fun and entertainment Robbie of Molong’s Stores brings to Bank Street. Titled ‘Hatty Father’s Day’ Robbie continued the fun with a free sausage sizzle on Sunday helped along by Nathan, Pete and his friendly dog, Syd, and lots of fun loving passers by. Thank you Robbie for another great fun day at Molong Stores in Bank Street.

Dave Stojanov with his two little girls, Alize and Jamo celebrating Father’s Day at the Freemasons.

The two Johnson boys Derek and Brian enjoying lunch with family members at Kay and Philip’s Wing Hang Chinese Restaurant on Father’s Day.

Judith and Milly Bunting and family members enjoyed a pleasant Sunday roast at Kim Stojanov’s Freemasons Hotel to celebrate with their dad and favourite man, James.

Dylan Wilson enjoyed lunch with his two sons, Van and Reuben at Kim’s Freemasons Hotel.

Aerial surveys of kangaroos The Department of Planning and Environment will be counting kangaroos across central western NSW during September 2023. A helicopter will fly at 300 feet above ground, at a speed of 50 knots. This is part of an annual survey program that has been running for over 40 years.

The wandering balladeer, Tim serenading a delighted Helen and Tina at the Freemasons Father’s Day celebration. A fantastic afternoon in the sunny courtyard followed for the relaxed crowd.

We will do surveys between 7 – 17 September and in the following districts: • Canowindra • Cowra • Oberon • Lithgow • Orange

For further information including maps, showing the transect locations, call the Kangaroo Management Program on 1300 173 376.

MOLONG EXPRESS, Thursday 7 September 2023

REG’S BENCH An Irishman walks into a railway station and presents himself at the ticket counter. “I'd like a return ticket,” he says. “Where to?” “To here!” says the Irishman. Billy stops Paddy in Dublin and asks for the quickest way to Cork. Paddy says, “Are you on foot or in the car?” Billy says, “In the car.” Paddy says, “That's the quickest way.” A young Irish boy said to his grandfather, “Make a frog noise for me, Grandad.” “No, son, I don't feel like making a frog noise right now.” “Oh please, Grandad, make a frog noise.” “No, I don't want to.” “Oh please, Grandad, make a frog noise.” “Why is it so important to you that I make a frog noise?” “Mum says when you croak we can have this house.” An Irish priest is driving down to New York and gets stopped for speeding. The state trooper smells alcohol on the priest's breath and then sees an empty wine bottle on the floor of the car. He says, “Sir, have you been drinking?” “Just water,” says the priest.

The trooper says, “Then why do I smell wine?” The priest looks at the bottle and says, “Good Lord! He's done it again!” Two Irishmen looking for work see a sign that reads TREE FELLERS WANTED. “Oh, now, look at that,” said Paddy. “What a pity there's only de two of us!” Father Murphy walks into a pub in Donegal, and says to the first man he meets, “Do you want to go to heaven?” The man said, “I do Father.” The priest said, “Then stand over there against the wall.” Then the priest asked the second man, “Do you want to got to heaven?” “Certainly, Father,” was the man's reply. “Then stand over there against the wall,” said the priest. Then Father Murphy walked up to O'Toole and said, “Do you want to go to heaven?” O'Toole said, “No, I don't Father.” The priest said, “I don't believe this. You mean to tell me that when you die, you don't want to go to heaven?” O'Toole said, “Oh, when I die, yes. I thought you were getting a group together to go right now.”

Molong Golf by the Ghost Walker A good roll up of sixteen players (plus Bell) for golf at the Royal Molong Golf Course on Sunday on what was a great morning weather wise for golf. Bell hasn’t been having a hit the last few weeks because she reckons we have had an even number of players so she has been the golf cart driver and scorer for Stubba’s group. It was good to see Woody, Scotty and Wilson having a hit with us and Trevor “Choppers” Lamb brought his son Daniel out for a hit as well. Daniel, when he hits a good shot it definitely goes a long way. Because of all the nice things I write about Mick Philpott I was partnered with him on Sunday in a two person ambrose. He got a quick lesson off Choppers before we hit off but unfortunately he forgot to put into practice what he was told. He did hit some good shots including a long drive up the middle of the fairway off the tee on the sixth. There are sometimes though when he strikes the ball I think Mick has been reincarnated from the caveman era when those cavemen used wooden clubs to bash rocks. Mick and I must have pushed Choppers and Daniel because they were the winners. I think they were three under par after three holes but then we brought them back a bit to our standard. Troy Warner decided to bring his golf cart out to golf on Sunday but the only trouble was he left his golf sticks at home. Just as well he was out at the course early because he had time to go home and get them. Mark Oates managed to come out for a hit on Sunday. It’s been a while due to him being unwell so it was good to see him having a hit.

Sport JUNIOR SOCCER Both sides played some amazing football, using each side of the field and letting the ball do all the work. With some great attacking and some great defense we went into half time at nil all. Starting the second half where left off, it took an amazing ball from Arlo (that he placed behind the defence) and a lightening quick Abbigail to run onto it and hit it first time into the bottom corner, it was just what the crowd ordered. Great team work from both teams, it was OAGS who scored next to level the scores once again. A goal kick was retrieved

by OAGS in the dying seconds to score the last goal to finish it 2-1. Outstanding efforts from everyone. The Galah’s have been playing some most impressive football over the last handful of weeks, and really gelling as a team. For his claim head at the back and some impressive saves as keeper, Jacob Oste was our player of the week. Keep up the great work Galahs, and lets finish this season with a bang. Coach Wade.

Arthur Weir and Archie Chrystall were this weeks medal winners for the U12 Magpies.

Al Evans was quiet on Sunday maybe because he said he can be mentioned in the golf notes without actually being there but it turns out he had a good reason for being absent the previous Sunday. Cumnock Open Tournament is on this Sunday and I think a few Molong players will be venturing out to play in it. However, golf will still be happening at Molong as usual, 8.30am for 9am for anyone who wants to have a game.

CROQUET NEWS

On Saturday last 14 members enjoyed a game of croquet at the Molong Bowling Club, it was a lovely sunny day and it is so good to be able to get out and have some fun and some laughs whilst getting some exercise. Anyone who would like a game are always very welcome to come along at 2 o'clock on a Saturday.

U6 Condors, Ike Chrystall and Henry Haynes, both had a great game and received a medal each for their outstanding effort.

It’s your club!
