New coach, lots of laughs, a great holiday...

Remembering Pez. Trethowan Molong's longtime unofficial Mayor, friend and confidante to many, mentor, mate and best

Helen, Barbara, Pat and Jim, Edna, Yvonne, Vi, Colleen, Ann and Margot (leader) joined a group of residents from Cudal and Manildra on a special Cabonne tour of northern NSW, and Queensland recently. Returning home they all said what a wonderful time they had and enjoyed plenty of laughs together. Particularly with Cabonne Council's Margot Brown who with her jovial humour helps to organise (and entertain) grateful residents who love to head off on a holiday or attend one day events such as musicals and shows in Dubbo or Sydney - and to enjoy shorter tours of places like Lightning Ridge etc. Well done to the delightful Margot Brown and Cabonne Council's community development team on this worthwhile and much appreciated long-time initiative. Now safely back at home ... the keen travellers are now looking forward to their next outing.

Mayor, Deputy re-elected

Cabonne Council’s Mayor Kevin Beatty and Deputy Mayor Jamie Jones have been re-elected unopposed at an Ordinary Council meeting held in Molong on Tuesday, 26 September 2023. Their re-election continues an unchanged leadership team for Cabonne Council for the next 12 months, with the next Mayoral election to be held September 2024. Both Mayor Kevin Beatty and Deputy Mayor Jamie Jones are looking forward to working together over the next 12 months. “It’s an absolute honour and privilege to be able to represent the Cabonne Community for another term and is a role I don’t take lightly. I would like to congratulate Cr Jamie Jones on his reappointment as the Deputy Mayor for another term. Your assistance over the past 12 months has been greatly appreciated as we have navigated the difficult times our communities have endured”, Mayor Kevin Beatty said. "I want to also acknowledge and thank the other Councillors for their ongoing support. Despite a very difficult period, our

Council team is a one focused on getting the job done. Whilst not all of the community may agree with every decision made, we are a team that does make decisions, and these decisions are progressing Cabonne", Mayor Kevin Beatty said. “It is a pleasure to be appointed Deputy Mayor again and to work alongside the re-elected Mayor, Kevin Beatty" said Cr. Jones. "I look forward to working together to progress projects within our community. The last 12 months have been the most difficult year Council has ever faced, following years of droughts, bushfires and COVID-19. We will continue to face challenges, but I am confident that we will continue to push the envelope to get projects delivered to our communities”, said Deputy Mayor Jamie Jones. Both the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and the broader Council team will continue to lobby on behalf of Cabonne communities to deliver infrastructure and services needed following the devastating floods, as well as continuing to seek funding opportunities to ensure Cabonne communities continue to grow and thrive.

Molong’s Debutante Ball - Still On

No-one in Molong enjoyed last Sunday night’s thrilling ARL Grand Final and the fantastic win by the Penrith Panthers more than local residents, Hugh and Cr. Libby Oldham. Whilst the entrepreneurial couple are better known for their investment in Molong through the brilliant buildings in Gidley Street (formerly known as Jayes Gallery and Cafe) - little did we know that they are also part of the Panther’s ‘Royal Family’. Panthers Coach, Ivan Cleary happens to be Hugh’s sister Betty’s son and Hugh and Libby’s nephew. Nathan, their great nephew. “We’ve known both and the entire Cleary family since they entered the world as babies and watched and enjoyed seeing them grow. They are a wonderful family - Ivan has always been a quiet unassuming person throughout his playing and coaching career. Both he and Nathan are much loved and admired members of the Oldham/Cleary families. Being involved in tourism ... maybe Hugh and Libby might be able to attract Ivan and Nathan to town sometime? Well, that’s a good idea and would help our teams - and, the kid’s would love the opportunity.

Wendy Pankhurst and her team advise that the planned Molong Debutante Ball is still on the calendar to be held in 2023. There is a date, time and the debs. and their partners are patiently waiting ... choosing their gowns and suits - the page boy and flower girl have been chosen. Training is happening. The one and only only hold-up has been in waiting for the completion of the planned venue - the new Molong Community Centre and the official handover to Cabonne Council by the relevant parties. “We’re ready to go” said Wendy - “and staying in touch with Council for a date”. “It’s going to be a wonderful event and we’re all excited for the big night to arrive”. The event will be an important fundraiser to support children affected by a debilitating and life threatening heart condition. The Express will advise of the confirmed date, time, and ticket sales when the information is available from Cabonne Council.

An Express reader sent us this photo of one of Molong’s many Debutante Balls. We’re not sure of the year - nor the name of the debs (and the matron, page-boy and flower-gir). We’re asking today’s readers to name each and all plus the year. Where are they now? Where did this glamorous young women disappear to? What career did they follow, do they still live locally? October MAG Molong Village Markets: The hardworking MAG team led by Chairperson, Peter Batten, achieved another successful market at the Molong Rec. Grounds last Monday (Long Weekend). "It was a hot day for this market" said Peter. "However, some 3,000 people attended the event. We had a mix of local and district residents, many from Orange, and visitors from around Australia who were passing through town - noticed the markets - and stopped and joined in the fun. There were also some international visitors including from Israel. The diversity of the stalls was again another positive feature of the October markets with a great combination of food, fresh foods, coffee, jewellery, clothing, farmyard treasures ... and the list goes on. Once again, MAG is very pleased with the overall response by attendees. We are very happy that MAG was able to attract more people to town and encouraged by the number of travellers who stopped. Main street traders have been pleased with the extra customers they received as a result of the markets on what would otherwise have been a quiet weekend of trade. Thank you again from Team MAG Molong Markets. And, thank you to our sponsors and the number of volunteers who came forward on the day to ease our small team's workloads.

Great entertainment continues in Molong @ Kim's Freemasons Hotel

We're not sure what keeps Molong business woman Kim Stojanov going. Stoic, resiliant, determined, never ever give up character? Not even the major November 2022 flood stopped Molong's woman of entrepreneurship. Did she complain? No! Did she bail out and not reopen the Freemasons (bottom pub) in Bank Street? No! Did she start again against all odds of no insurance (unaffordable)? Did she start again againsts all odds severely stacked against her business premises? Yes. Is Kim and her new kitchen team now serving the best food (lunches and dinner) from the pub kitchen? Absolutely. We're glad Kim does not give up on herself, her family, her pub and the entire town and district. BECAUSE ... Kim has added live music to the Freemasons growing list of weekly entertainment. Last weekend - the long weekend was another of Kim's live music concerts in the wonderful courtyard area. "Fantastic" said the crowd of locals and visitors. Next weekend - Kim has secured Amber Lawrence. See front page. We're proud of you Kim for not giving up on your town and your committment in continuing to build your dream. We're all right there with you. Thanks Kim. By Rozzi

Perry Trethowan 1949-2023 Molong Legend

Molong lost a great mate, friend and mentor when Perry Trethowan passed away recently. Some 300+ people from near and far attended Pez’s Memorial Service last Saturday at the Molong Rec. Grounds. Here is Perry’s story - in respect of an outstanding citizen who made a huge difference. Good morning. For those who don't know me, my name is Kevin Beatty. My family and I moved to Molong in 1996 when I was stationed here as a Police officer. I would firstly like to thank Brony, Dean, Jodie and their extended family for asking me to address you all today. It is an honour, privilege and gives me great pleasure to speak about Perry with you all. In reflecting this morning about today. It was easy to realise that, when the Trethowans had the Newsagency, there was not a single person in Molong, our surrounding villages, and everywhere in between that did not know who Perry was. I will begin by quoting Perry. I am sure all of you at one time in your life would of heard these words when you attended the Molong Newsagency. How are you Pez? “Never seen the world looking brighter” It i'll be right.” “Take it easy mate, you can't rush these things.” This was always accompanied with a smile, a laugh, a joke or a real good yarn. Perry loved talking to everyone. It didn't matter if it was 6am or 6pm, the greeting, the smile, yarn, was still the same. In a way he was the sounding board for the community. (Kevin read the family tribute below) Perry David Edwin Trethowan first born son of Harry and Dordy Trethowan, was born on the 4th October 1949 in Albury. Perry spent his childhood in Albury and Howlong and he attended Ivanhoe Grammar School for his senior years. When Perry left school, he met the love of his life and soul mate, Bronny. They engaged at the age of 17 and married on the 25th April 1970. Starting their life together at Tongala, Victoria, Pez worked on the family dairy farm for the next few years. Perry played cricket and football growing up and he had a great supporter along the way. His No 1 supporter felt very strongly if anyone manhandled her man and this may have led to confrontation with the opposition on occasions, causing Bronny to get hit over the head with a brolly and Pez yelling “Get in the car” from the footy field. The next move for Pez and Bron was to Wodonga where Pez worked at Dunstan’s Saw Mill as a labourer. On the 17th July 1973, Pez and Bron welcomed Dean, their first born into the world with Jodi to follow 2 years later on the 4th November 1975. In 1978, The Trethowan family made the move to Paynesville, East Gippsland Victoria to work with Harry and Dordy in the family owned General Store and Newsagency which included the milk run. A few years later Perry’s brother and his wife joined the family business. In 1983 Perry and Bronny made one of the biggest decisions of their life to purchase a newsagency of their own and relocate the family once again. Little did they know that this move to Molong would be for the next 40 odd years of their life where they continued to build their business and serve the Molong community. Upon speaking to one of Perry’s closest friends recently, we were reminded that Perry introduced VB to NSW as well as drinking at night tennis. He passed this trait on to his son but Dean took it one step further and used to go to The Freemasons between sets. In 1991, they purchased ‘Glenrowan’ which strengthened Pez’s love of the land. When he wasn’t at the newsagency you would find him driving around the paddocks with his medicine chest checking his stock. A few years later Pez expanded his portfolio and purchased ‘The Willows’ at Cumnock. This led to many so called ‘farm days’ (although we are not quite sure how much work actually got done). In 2020, Pez and Bron sold the newsagency to retire to the farm life. Unfortunately a decline in health restricted Pez from enjoying his retirement. Over the last two years Perry had numerous visits to the hospital with various illness. He overcame one hurdle only to be dealt

another. He fought a long and hard battle and we are so proud of him for giving it his all, but unfortunately he didn’t win. He lost the battle on Monday 25th September at 10pm. As I said earlier, I moved to Molong in 1996. One of the first people I met was Perry. Within days of me starting work, I was called out in the earlier hours of the morning to a break in at the Supermarket and the 22 Novenber 2007 Newsagency. Thieves had smashed the front door of the Newsagency and stolen cigarettes. I immediately noted Perry's easier going attitude. He was certainly annoyed about what had happened but was calm and got on with cleaning up the mess. I remember him saying,, oh well I might as well stay here at wait for the papers.' Pez always took a positive attitude. This was clearly evident in the last two years as he battled his health issues. This was a the start of a long friendship with the Trethowans and their extended family. Over the years we shared many social events and work on each others places ( Perry always insisted on Back lining my sheep after shearing) and of course we shared the odd VB. Molong had taken the Victorian out of him but we couldn't get the VB out of him. A very rewarding time for me was when I played Perry in a Molong Players theatre production. I spent a lot of time with Pez, learning how he walked, how he moved and how he talked. We got to know each other pretty well and of course had the odd VB. After I had just retired from policing, Pez asked my if I would do his paper deliveries for a couple of weeks while he went up north on holidays. I agreed and he told me that he would show me the ropes. Pez told me to me to meet him and 14 September 2006 the shop at midday on a Saturday so we put that one on the verandah, drive down the drive and could do a dry run. Pez closed the shop and we went put that one out the back but if it;s raining throw it under out the front to the company car, an old Toyota Camry the carport. All these different instruction on where each station wagon. I went to the front passenger seat and paper had to go continued until we finished. We got back went to get in. I saw that the seat was fully reclined with to the shop and Pez finished with,” It;s easy mate you'll the head rest resting against the back seat. Perry said, be right.” no you'll have to hope in the back, the front seat is where Sunday night came, the next day was the first day as the papers go. I'll show how to stack them later. I hopped paper boy. Now bare this in mind. I had been in some in the back, Pez handed me over a VB and said, I've had real pressure situation as a police officer, arrested violent a busy morning, we better have one. Off we went, me criminal, thieves, murderers. Given evidence in supreme felling like miss daisy in the back. Courts. People & Places Molong's Early Risers Last week's cold white frosts encouraged many of us to roll over to more 'slumberland' bliss and a return to gentle zzzzzzz's. It's not the same for popular Molong newsagent, Perry Trethowan, who has to hop out of bed in the cold to make sure daily newspapers are delivered on time. Perry is up and around by 3.00 a.m. (Yes, an unbelievable 3.00 a.m.!!) to deliver the Tele, Sydney Morning Herald, Molong Express (Thursdays) and the CWD to keen readers who like to share the

early morning news with their hot tea and toast. Then, it's back to the Trethowan's newsagency in a still dark Bank Street. With the sun starting to peep over the hill.... Molong's popular newsagent catches up on his own zzzzzzz's in the warmth of his Toyota. Until 6.00 a.m. when Perry opens shop to greet other early morning risers with his welcoming "gidday" and parting "take it easy". Story and photos by Rozzi Smith. More of Molong's Early Risers next week

From the Molong Express 8 July 2010

3.30 a.m. Perry arrives in town to start delivering the daily newspapers. (He sure looked more alive than Rozzi who rugged up and went along on the early morning run!.

Time for a pre-dawn short "gidday" to another early riser, the driver of Robert's Bakery delivery van.

More papers to be moved inside after delivery by the last paper truck for the day.

The 'Tele' ready for delivery to local households and businesses - via the best in customer service. On wet days, delivery by Perry is to front doors. How's that for amazing customer service!

A short read (no! that's a definite nap) before Perry opens the newsagency doors to welcome customers.

One of the stops is the Molong Korner Store where papers are delivered for the day's trade.

By 6.00 a.m. lights are on at Trethowan's Molong Newsagency ready to welcome other early risers. Even on a cold, frosty morning - there are plenty of locals and travellers popping in to say 'good morning' to Perry.

It's 6.30 a.m. and Tim (on his way to work in Orange) makes customer number 10 for the day.

t's easy to roll over in bed, switch off the alarm, snuggle into the doona, and catch just a minute more of good old ‘shut eye’. But not for the very likeable Perry Trethowan. It’s early to bed and early to rise for our Perry – and has been for some 26 years now since he and wife, Bron, decided to purchase the Molong Newsagency in Bank Street. Up at 3 a.m. Monday to Friday to take delivery of Sydney and local papers, magazines etc Perry then does his paper round in and around local streets and to the Molong Korner Store, BP Service Centre, Molong Hospital etc. etc.. “I’m usually up and around before the frost hits” said Perry who leaves his farm at 3.15 a.m. to head into the newsagency. “This week, the frost beat me up. “I’ve never seen a frost like that one. It had settled around my place before I got up”. So, how does Perry manage to jump out of bed so early in the morning and after so many years? “The mornings are good. “The summer months are particularly good. “I’m a good sleeper though” he assured me as we drove in the white Toyota ute around many Molong streets and houses that I have never noticed before. First stop was to deliver the Telegraph Hotel’s paper, then up to Cabonne Council – then around the dark streets to private homes, up around the hospital hill, the hospital, Prunus Lodge and eventually to Leanne and Paul Kinsella’s Molong Korner Store – at the same time the Roberts Bread and Pie Van pulled in to deliver their daily order. Back into Bank Street at 5.30 a.m. and the sun was still only

An early morning traveller on his way to work saw the light on at Perry's so he stopped in for an early morning paper.

thinking about rising. This is the special 30 minutes when Perry catches up on a quick snooze in his warm ute. 6.00 a.m. is shop opening time and a busy time for Perry when early morning workers call for their paper and a quick chat before driving off to Orange and other places for work. Locals are often at Perry’s at this time of the morning until around 8.00 a.m. when it slows down a bit. “I grab a cup of coffee at around 6.30 a.m. Then have some cereal and fruit

when the girls come in to work”. Working from 3.00 a.m. until 6.00 p.m. of a night is a very long day – but Perry manages to fill these times most days of the year. “I have a bit of a sleep around lunch time (at the back of the shop) for about an hour. “Then I keep going until we close at 6.00 p.m”. Then he’s off to his farm and the lovely Bron for time together. Somehow Perry manages to run two farms which he obviously enjoys very much. “Take it easy” is one of Perry’s favourite sayings to his many customers and friends. Could there ever be a man so laid-back as Perry Trethowan? Perry and Bron with their then young family, Jodie and Dean, moved to Molong 26 years ago from the pretty Victorian lakeside town of Paynesville. Located on the fascinating Gippsland Lakes, Paynesville has always been a 'boating town' with keen sailors and drivers of all kinds of motor boats enjoying time on the series of waterways to the outlet to the sea at Lakes Entrance. Why leave such a splendid place? "Jodes and Deano were young and we wanted to spend more time as a family together. We were in a fairly large retail/newsagency business at the time. I had already come to Orange to look at a business – and drove back to Paynesville that evening. There was a fax at home of other newsagencies for sale - with one at Molong. I hopped into the car the next day to head to Molong with Bron. We were both pleased with what was offered to us". Molong has been very lucky!

REG’S BENCH More Dad Jokes - really bad ones Native American women give birth. A son on deer skin, another son on a buffalo skin, third ,twin boys on a hippopotamus skin. The chief said: The squaw of the hippocampus is equal to the the son on the squaws of the other 2 hides I've just bought the wife a new refrigerator. Can't wait to see her face light up when she opens it. So when I was kid, I said to my dad: "Can I use the lawnmower to make some extra money?" "Sure son, you go ahead" So I sold it. I come from a family of failed magicians. I have two half sisters. The local Police station was robbed of its toilet. Reporter: will you catch the thief ? Police Chief: We have nothing to go on. Therapist: your wife says that you never buy her flowers what do you say to that ? Me: to be honest I didn't even know she sold flowers. If I bring you breakfast in bed, a polite “Thank you” will suffice. Not these questions like “Who are you?” and “How did you get in my house?”

Asked my wife why she married me,she said" Because you're really funny" I said " I thought it was because I was good in bed"? Her reply "see you're hilarious " Not too long ago I was an Uber driver for a bee. I had to make a bathroom stop at the BP station. My wife told me to stop acting like a Flamingo, so I put my foot down. So my rum and raisin cake is gluten free. It’s also raisin free. And cake free. OK it’s just rum. Nothing is impossible? I disagree. I'm doing nothing right now. When my dad dies he wants his ashes pressed into a record,.. It was his vinyl request .. When I die, I hope I go in my sleep like my grandfather did. Not screaming and yelling like his passengers. Just found out the company that makes yardsticks, won't be making them any longer. I can tell people are judgmental just by looking at them.

Tackling them will require long-term strategic Cheers, the Happy Hacker. investments and policy reform. “NSW faces an invasive species crisis due to the cumulative effect of recent natural disasters, climate change and underfunding. ‘Our frontline pest and weeds agencies are understaffed, underfunded and have been under enormous pressure over the last four years as they responded to fire, drought, floods, COVID-19 and the varroa mite outbreak. "Weeds like lantana and madeira vine are smothering our native plants, feral foxes and cats prey upon our birds and small mammals and streams and wetlands are being trampled by hard-hoofed feral deer and horses. “New threats on our doorstep like red imported fire ants or tilapia fish could cause new extinctions if they make it into NSW. "We are particularly pleased to see the Minister for Agriculture and the Minister for Environment working together in commissioning this review. “For too long invasive species policies and programs have failed to give environmental threats equal weight to industry priorities. Strong collaboration between the Environment and Agriculture Ministers and their departments is the key to changing this,” Mr Gough said.

LETTERS I’ve recently been in the Scottish Highlands and Isle of Skye where the “clearances” of the 18th & 19th centuries are still much discussed in books and museums. The clearances occurred over a hundred years or so when tenant farmers were forced from their land and moved to the edges of society to make way for; - would you believe - sheep grazing. The clearances shaped the Scotland of today, caused enormous trauma for thousands of Scots and resulted in thousands of immigrants to places like Australia. Australians of Scottish heritage may be sympathetic to vote yes in the referendum. It occurred to me that the parallels between Australian & Scottish history are stark in this regard. Australian First Nation Peoples who, in a loose society had managed this continent successfully for 50,000 odd years were dumped off their land, losing their way of life and herded into settlements on the edge of society to make way for, -among other things – the grazing of sheep for the new

settlers from Europe. Australia’s inability to acknowledge the reality of our history has resulted in the trauma being continued down the generations. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people are a special case in the Australian Constitution already; the Federal Government has the power in the Constitution to make laws that specifically affect them. History has shown that many of these laws have been ineffective, and some have been disastrous such as the stolen generation schemes and the payment of sit-down money. A voice to the parliament and the government enshrined in the constitution will help policy makers make and adjust better policies by being advised by a broad selection of people from across the aboriginal nation. The voice will also help aboriginal people take ownership of Government efforts to improve their lives, preserve their culture and contribute the large amount that they have to offer to Australian society. Our September meeting which was held at the RSL for the first time is working very well and is giving us more space to mingle at morning tea. 31 members walked over to the Museum for a visit and talk plus a lovely lunch supplied by volunteers of the Museum. Jan McIntyre then took some photos of some of our members dressed in period clothes, once one couple had their photo taken, others soon got in line and enjoyed the experience of dressing up. For our October meeting which is our birthday month we will be car pooling and going over to the Japanese Gardens at Cowra. for lunch and a walk around the gardens, hopefully the Wisteria Walk will still be in bloom as it is quite magnificent. Meeting time is 10.00am on Tuesday 10th at the RSL Auditorium, new members and visitors always welcome.
