Follow the Magpies to Blayney on Saturday INSIDE

Junior Rugby & Soccer P8-9

PLUS Lots of News & Features

There's a chance that Molong might secure this year's Rugby Grand Final if they win against Blayney at Blayney on Saturday (6 August 2022). The Maggy's might even do better if Molong residents are at the Blayney Oval to back their boys. Loud, noisy cheering is needed (Molong style) for this game ... to support the Maggies's team who have played to their best all season. The skin knocked off their fingers, legs, arms and noses is a testament to how hard these players have worked for their communities. Now it's our turn to gather at Blayney, to cheer above the local crowds (yes they are proud - and noisy) in showing our town's support for their local side. See you there - rug up - warm your hands with a hot coffee and footy pie. Good Luck Molong Maggys.

Molong Probus Club Hello everyone. Our July meeting was well attended and a new member Susannah Sherwood was given her badge, welcome Susannah. Our guest speaker was Paul Mullins who gave us a very interesting and amusing talk on his working life at Parliament House. He was born in Canberra and after leaving school worked for 35 years in and around Federal Parliament including the National Archives. He met Rozzi and they moved to Molong to run the Molong Express 20 years ago.

I hope you are all excited about our Concert with Geoff Tonkin and Audrey Kerr at our August 9 meeting. Feel free to ask your friends and family along. To make it as Covid safe as possible it has been suggested that you may like to do a RAT test the day before, and I would also suggest we wear masks. There will be single tables set up to keep everyone reasonably spaced. The meeting will start at 9.30am at the Molong Bowling Club.

Remembering Archie Roach AM Gunditjmara (Kirrae Whurrong/ Djab Wurrung), Bundjalung Senior Elder, songman and storyteller, Australian of the Year 2020 (State), Archie Roach AM has died, aged 66. He made a huge difference.

State recipient Australian of the Year 2020 - Archie Roach AM was a singer, songwriter, musician and campaigner for the rights of First Nations Australians. (R) Ruby Charlotte Margaret Hunter (31 October 1955 – 17 February 2010), also known as Aunty Ruby, was an Aboriginal Australian singer, songwriter, guitarist and the life and musical partner of Archie Roach AM

WARNING: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander readers are advised this story contains images of a person who is deceased.

The legendary Archie Roach AM has died. His sons' Amos and Eban "have given permission for Archie's name, image and music to be used, so that his legacy will continue to inspire" (Channel 9). Archie, a member of the Stolen Generation, passed away last Saturday surrounded by his family and loved ones at the Warrnambool Base Hospital in Victoria following a long illness. He surived a stroke in 2010 but in the following year (2011) Archie was diagnosed with lung cancer. During this time Archie continued to write and perform with one of his last gigs stage at the St. Kilda Festival in February this year wearing a breathing aide. "Archie wanted all of his many fans to know how much he loves you for supporting him along the way" said his sons, on behalf of their dad's family and extended family. "We are so proud of everything our dad achieved in his remarkable life. He was a healer and unifying force. His music brought people together." Amongst the tributes ... Prime Minister Anthony Albanese tweeted "Our country has lost a brilliant talent, a powerful and prolific national truth teller. Archie's music drew from a well of trauma and pain, but it flowed with a beauty and a resonance that moved us all. We grieve for his death, we honour his life and we hold to the hope that his words, his music and his indomitable spirit will live on to guide us and inspire us." Premier of Victoria, Dan. Andrews tweeted "Few people have put the pain, the suffering, the hope and the pride of Aboriginal people into words like Archie Roach. His music is remarkable because it tells a remarkable story. His own story. When 'Took The Children Away' was performed for the first time it was met with stunned silence before a raucous applause. And it would go on to become the first song to ever be recognised with a Human Rights Achievement Award. He'd release

five more albums, poetry, a children's book and his own memoir. But his impact on our state, and our country is so much greater than the sum of his words. The proud Gunditjmara (Kirrae Whurrong/Djab Wurrung), Bundjalung man never stopped fighting for the Stolen Generations to be heard, and listened to. And with Ruby (Archie's life and musical partner) they helped countless Aboriginal children avoid the path he followed as a young man. Archie first became known for the song 'Took the Children Away', which featured on his debut solo album, 'Charcoal Lane', in 1990. He toured around the globe, headlining and opening shows for Joan Armatrading, Bob Dylan, Billy Bragg, Tracy Chapman, Suzanne Vega and Patti Smith. His work has been recognised by numerous nominations and awards, including a Deadly Award for a 'Lifetime Contribution to Healing the Stolen Generations' in 2013. At the 2020 ARIA Music Awards on 25 November 2020, Roach was inducted into their hall of fame. His 2019 memoir and accompanying album were called 'Tell Me Why'. Here is the first verse of the first song written and performed by Archie ... "Took The Children Away" the story of Archie's life as a 'member' of the Stolen Generation. This story's right, this story's true I would not tell lies to you Like the promises they did not keep And how they fenced us in like sheep. Said to us come take our hand Sent us off to mission land. Taught us to read, to write and pray Then they took the children away, Took the children away, The children away. Snatched from their mother's breast Said this is for the best Took them away.

“I’m All For Molong” Meet Jane Lyons Miller the wonderful community building volunteer who has chosen to spend her retirement days promoting all things Molong on a number of facebook sites. Read on for the amazing initiative Jane has put into place ... to support residents, and the town, traders, events etc “I’m all for Molong”.

Born and bred on the family farm of social media - particularly facebook at Beri (farming area a few kms from - and took a look at one of the most Molong and Euchareena) - Jane and important aspects that supports a her siblings - David and Sue attended community. Communication! Molong Central School and played Now two years down the track - Jane sport, attended town events, and Lyons Miller is a daily contributor grew with the values of their early (community builder/volunteer) on settler extended families of “putting three local sites, ‘Molong is Gorgeous’, something back into the town that was ‘Spread the Word Molong’ and good to us”. And she has - and is - in ‘Molong is the Word’ promoting all her own creative way and via her own things Molong. Including events, self-initiative. school news, sporting clubs, awards, “I’m really proud of Molong and promotion of local business, meetings the community. Like many others (organisations), Council, interest of different generations of extended groups, business organisations (e.g. farming/town family settlers - I have Utilities’ notices), community groups seen the town, and the centre (Bank etc. etc. Street/Gidley Street) come and go as a A really important role is that result of changing economic times e.g. Jane researches (as a community drought, the steady closure of banks, volunteer) the vast Cabonne Council shops, and the larger department store site and places these on the local - the Western Stores. The town, at facebook sites (Molong and Cabonne times, looking like a ghost town.” sites) - any important notices that “So, I’m really happy to see the the Council mentions e.g. meetings, current activity in Bank Street and awards, payment deadlines, changes Gidley Street - and all around town to compliance etc. rates, events etc. - of ‘change’ to create a new future. I The even better news for Molong believe that our kids at the schools is that Jane continues to increase and youth in town and district deserve her skills and knowledge by adding the opportunity for jobs and training other sites and informing the towns to be available in Molong. One way in Cabonne Country, as well as the to achieve this is through supporting community facebook sites of Orange, promotion of Molong - which is Bathurst, Cowra, Dubbo, Parkes, my goal. For example, I trained in Wellington etc - of important events nursing and spent the last 14 years in Molong - as well as information on of my working life at Prunus Lodge. I what is available in town e.g. coffee, was glad of the opportunity to be able food, pubs, club, chinese, shopping, to remain - and to live and work in etc. etc. ... “I’ve noticed an increase Molong. I think what I am doing now in reader responses from all over the is a way that I can help to “reach out” place”. Great work Jane. and support the growth and further Why does Jane spend her time doing development of Molong.” this promotion/communication in Well, that’s all it takes for a woman Molong - and as a volunteer. like Jane with her heart and soul in She simply responds “I’m all for Molong to take a look around and Molong!” figure out what she can do to support The Express would like to thank the town and its’ people ... and help Jane and congratulate her on the to cement a better town for the sensational initiative she has taken as generations today - and in the future. a community volunteer (note, no $$ With limited computer skills - Jane grants involved, no Cabonne Council sat with her son’s computer and her ownership, no community group smart phone, she ‘surfed’ the waves ownership.). Elders Extra Lesley Staniforth - Elders Molong

We missed our monthly catch up in July. I was languishing in the sunshine in tropical north Queensland, eating prawns and barra. What a shock to come back here to our recent cold snap, needless to say, any semblance of a tan has disappeared, and it’s back to lighting the fire to keep warm. This month we look at what’s happening with crops and pastures, and news on the livestock front. We visit some really attractive options with Rural Bank. We had a really wet start to the cropping season which meant some crops were sown late, if at all. Driving around in the paddocks to inspect is still boggy, and in some locations, a tinny is still the best method of transportation. Crops and pastures do not like waterlogged feet as this can stagnate growth, open them up to fungal infection or can lead to yellowish or purple tinges due to nitrogen or phosphorus deficiency. The latter is more prevalent than thought this year as some cockies cut costs by cutting fertiliser rates. There’s still plenty of time to topdress crops and pastures so get in touch if you’re looking to tissue test to determine nutrient requirements now that we have a better idea of potential crop yield. After getting the crop in and away, if travelling to far north Queensland is not on the cards, it may mean fencing is next on the agenda, with the view to moving stock onto fresh paddocks. We have been so busy with orders for vaccine, and worming drenches whilst stock are

being processed through the yards. Fortunately, for us here at Elders Molong, we have our animal health experts on tap for advice on the best program for your flock or herd. On that note, we are very excited to announce our next information evening on the topic of Cattle, on Thursday 18th August. Save that date as we will have Kyle Macdonald from Zoetis talking about animal health and James Dickson from Dickson Ag imparting his knowledge on animal nutrition. This is one event not to miss!! In this current economic climate, we need to make all posts winners. Our rural product prices are very competitive as too are the interest rates on Rural Bank investment options. We receive daily updates on interest rates for term deposits, farm management deposits and savings accounts. Rural Bank offer Everyday accounts, and Retirement accounts too. You don’t need to be a ‘cocky’ to open a Rural Bank account. Lesley can help you with any enquiries or ring on 63635700. Make Elders Molong your ‘one stop shop’ for rural supplies, and your banking needs. We can also place you in touch with an Elders Real Estate Agent if you are buying or selling a property, rural or residential. If you are after an insurance quote for your home or farm, we have a specialist in the area. Any questions don’t hesitate to give us a yell, or pop into the branch. As always, we’re here to help.

This Macaw I painted particularly intrigued me, he was at the Orange Bird Sale last year, and I took a photo. As I usually paint native birds, I found painting this bird so enjoyable with the fantastic display of colour.

Molong RSL Sub Branch update

President, David Bloomfied writes . “The Molong RSL Sub Branch would like to take this opportunity to thank the team from Fencing 1 for their excellent job, and also MAG for their input, and especially Cabonne Council for funding the Molong “Cooee Memorial project” through the Community Enhancement Fund.” (See page 7). ‘We have issued an invitation to people interested in joining the Molong Sub-Branch to a dinner we held on 3rd August at the RSL Club in Riddell Street (advertised in last week’s Express) to to join with us. The invitation to make contact with the Molong RSL Sub-Branch and to join us is still on offer. We would love to see new members to keep the Sub-Branch going. Joining the RSL means more than being invited to events. It's not just what you get as a valued member; It's about what you can do for other

veterans. For further information contact David on 0419 435 717 or Google RSLNSW. (Above) - David Bloomfield and Justin Lampe (Fencing1) preparing to place the symbols of the “Coo-ee March” at the Rec. Story Next Page.

Molong RSL Sub Branch Remembers the Coo-ees

Well done to David Bloomfield and the Molong RSL SubBranch members who have 'unveiled' one of the local memories of the 'Coo-ee March' that came through town, and the surrounding district, in 1915. Commencing in Gilgandra, the 'Cooee' March - (one of many such marches across NSW/Australia were given different names) was a long walk through towns, villages and farming lands inviting men to sign up/join up to take part in Australia's involvement in the overseas war effort. It was a long walk to Sydney but the men walked, camped, and kept going through difficult terrain, challenging weather conditions, and suffering chafed backs from the rudimentary backpacks that carried a few belongings. Blisters from ill-feeting boots and shoes did not stop these country men from 'doing their bit' to save home and country. The Coo-ee Memorial Gates at the entrance to the Molong Rec. Grounds were erected many years ago in honour of the men and their long march, and their lives - and those lost

overseas. However, the green gates (as shown above) had been barely noticeable because the entrance to the Rec. has to be left open for community access. Therefore, the gates swinging to the inside had lost their purpose of 'remembrance'. But with the help of Justin Lampe of Eden - the RSL Sub-Branch members are proud of the new steel cut-outs of two soldiers and signage that is now in place and will always be visible on the brick fence. (See above). Congratulations to the Molong RSL Sub Branch for their fine efforts in securing important local war history for the benefit of today's and future generations.

From the Molong Express 1915. Day 13, Friday, 22 October, 1915, Boomey to Molong leg. "Boomey was bidden farewell at 8 a.m. on Friday, 22nd, and several miles covered to The Shades, where the men of the column were treated to a poultry breakfast. Mr. It. E. Johnson, the local school teacher, a most enthusiastic worker, had his thirty or forty school children paraded to meet the marching army, and showed them a point in marching. The children also sang patriotic songs during the brief meal, and in this respect also reflected credit on their teacher. Sergeant Sam Ball, of the Light Horse, which body met the “Coo-ees” a mile or so along the road, was also an energetic organiser of the little reception, and the ladies cannot be praised enough for the trouble they took to do honor to the marching recruits. Headed by the Light Horse, the remainder of the sixteen miles to Molong was left behind with the memories of the generous treatment en route. Arriving at the outskirts of the town at 11.30, a procession was formed, and the principal streets were traversed to the martial airs of the Molong town band. At the saluting base at the recreation ground, the mayor, Alderman J. S. Taylor, inspected the column and expressed himself well pleased with the men’s appearance. After the order to dismiss, cordials were served out, and the river availed of, the opportunity for a wash. Luncheon was the next item on the programme. One of the staff had a stock of “Coo-ees” ribbons for sale at a shilling each, and we have reason to believe that at the conclusion of his speech, he sold over a pounds’ worth. After lunch Messrs. J. C. L. Fitztpatrick, M.L.A., W. Johnson, ex-M.L.A., Major Wynne, and Q.M.-Sergeant Lee were the chief speakers. Two men volunteered, and were duly sworn in, and four men turned up from Parkes." The Coo-ee marchers then walked towards Orange." Full story available at the Express $5

JUNIOR SOCCER It was a cracking frost to start the day, but the sun came out and we had plenty of players and spectators to make it a fantastic home game. Thank you to all our volunteers on the day to help run the canteen and set up and pack up at the end of the day. U6 Phoenix and U6 Condors - What a great game playing against one of your own clubs teams. The children had an awesome game with lots of passing and they are now starting to call out to each other, it's great to see the kids are enjoying themselves. U7 Crows - Had a great game on Saturday. They’ve come so far this year, working together well as a team and being very supportive of each other. If anyone is injured, they are all there to help, they are aware of their team members on the field and make sure to pass the ball around. Todays player of the match was Emma Drady, for trying her hardest and putting in extra effort today on the field. The Crows look forward to their games every week and are very proud with how far they’ve come.

U6 Condors and U6 Pheonixs

U8 Budgies - Played at Cudal against the Cudal Cockatoos, Molong had a great win 6 - 2. Lottie Bunting was awarded Player of the Week. U9 Galahs - played an excellent game on Saturday at their home ground. The sun was out and despite the chill and slightly squishy field, the team got in there and had an energetic and busy game. The U9 Galahs played against the U9 Waratah Vikings. Our team showed excellent communication, with calling for passes and moving forward to receive the pass. Spectators got to observe some powerful shots at the goals, complimented by vigilant defending when at the other end of the pitch.Overall the U9 Galahs showed great soccer skills and more importantly fantastic sportsmanship and respect. A big congratulations to Harrison for being Player of the Week! All of the games are being played away this weekend, please check the draw. MDSC - Proudly Sponsored by AMP Power

RUGBY UNION The Magpie’s Nest

Wallas at Canowindra

The Molong Magpies Wallas travelled to the Canowindra Rugby Club last Sunday 31 July 2022 for a super Gala Day where all clubs from the Central West are represented. U6 drew Forbes and Bathurst Gold, U8 played Orange City and Forbes and U10 played Cowra and Canowindra. U6s. Well done to all players for the day as the improvement in defence was a noticeable achievement in both games. Though Coaches Stu and Mick had the defensive line on display, it was individual effort that was the standout. Player of the Day went to Saffy Chase for her all round consistency in both attack and defence. U8s. The boys played extremely well in attack, scoring lots of tries in both games. Their ball stealing was ‘A grade’, turning over stacks of ball in isolated tackles - something the team have been working on at training. While attack was great, the boys missed some key tackles that lead to tries; something we will be looking to improve this week at training. Coach Dean commented on how much improvement from this team this year was very pleasing and the boys are looking forward to the last game. Player of the Day went to Nikora Pineaha for his ‘drive’ around the paddock. Well done. U10s. A tough two games saw the U10s pull through as a team to make it four wins from four games since the holiday Break!

Game 1 vs the Cowra Eagles was a great contest. Molong started strongly, scoring in the opening moments of the game due a handy turnover at the breakdown! The Eagles were fired up after half time and immediately put the Magpies under pressure. Like all great teams the U10s responded, pulled up their socks, spread the ball wide on the full sized field and came through victors! Game 2 was against Canowindra Pythons and was a strong arm wrestle all game. The Pythons were handy at the breakdown, challenging for the ball at every opportunity. Again the Magpies did themselves and their supporters proud by pulling through as a team unit and finishing with the victory. Such a great U10s team of mates, Jackson Townsend was player of the day, Jackson stepped his game up this week with low driving tackles and barnstorming runs whenever he could get his hands on the ball! Toughest player went to Ollie Reynolds with his vision for open space and strong hard defence on our line! Well done Magpies! Thankyou again to the Canowindra Club for hosting the day. This week is the final gala day for the year in Mudgee against Mudgee, Wellington, Bathurst and Dubbo Roos on Sunday 7 August. Lets make the trip and enjoy the seasons end.

Under 8 player of the Day - Nikora Pineha

U10's Ollie Reynolds, toughest player. Jackson Townsend, player of the day.

Under 6 player of the day Saffi Chase.

Remembering ... Geoff Pokoney Dedicated member of the MCS community

Geoff Pokoney passed away recently in Perth W.A. He was a well respected member of the Molong Central School teaching team for 37 years of his career. Geoff was appointed Head Teacher of the Social Science Department in 1980 and then Deputy Principal in 1998. Geoff retired in 2011 after spending his entire teaching career at Molong Central School. Apart from teaching, one of Geoff's great passions was rugby league and he thoroughly enjoyed coaching a number of MCS football teams. He made a positive difference to the lives of many students and colleagues. Geoff is remembered (below) by former MCS Principal, Janis Glasson, former student and work colleague of Geoff, Jenny Barrow and colleagues Kerry and Barb Adamsthwaite

Remembered by Jenny Barrow, former student and work colleague at Molong Central School In the late 70s a young, muscley, long-haired teacher, resembling a young Sylvester Stallone arrived at Molong Central School in his sporty silver Celica car. Geoff Pokoney was the new Geography Teacher and this is where, as a teenage student at MCS, my association with him started. Over the next few years I was lucky enough to not only have him as my teacher, but also as my hockey coach. I don't think Geoff had ever had much to do with hockey as his main sporting interest was football - but he took on the job, learning the rules and skills along the way. He had all of us girls super fit, so much so that my father once chastised him about training us too hard, or as Dad put it, "they're not footballers mate, you need to ease up a bit!" I didn't find out about this little chat till many, many years later, but Geoff just said, "don't worry Coop, I wasn't upset, I had a lot of respect for your Dad and I appreciated his advice". It is this measure of respect that Geoff had for everyone in our community that always comes to mind when I think of him. He had respect for everyone be it a colleague or parent, or the naughtiest student, he treated everyone equally. In later years Geoff would go on to the position of Deputy, the role that put the 'fear of god' in most of the students at MCS, but as can be witnessed by all of the positive comments this past week, although he was tough, he was also loved for his fairness and caring. He demanded respect, good behaviour and manners from all students and would not tolerate anything less in return. When out of his deputies office, he loved nothing more than to have a joke and laugh with students and over the years many were given nicknames, courtesy of him. About 21 years ago, I started working at MCS and as he was still there, I got to work alongside my 'old teacher', and also where I got to witness his work ethic in action. I know first-hand that he always only ever had the best interests of our students at heart, and he never gave up on anyone, even after they had left school. We had many chats about ex-students and he was always concerned for their welfare and interested in what they were doing. I feel proud to have not only been taught by a great man, but to have worked alongside him as his colleague and friend. I will always remember his genuine caring nature, his work ethic, his love for footy, chocolate and especially the students of Molong Central School. My condolences go out to Mary, Erin & Ryan and their families. Rest in peace Geoff Love Coop

Remembered by Janis Glasson former Principal of the Molong Central School “It was an absolute honour and privilege to have known Geoff. When I was appointed to Molong Central School as Principal in 2004, I asked Geoff why he had not taken on the Principalship ( as would have been his right) and he replied "that he wished to remain as Deputy Principal so that he could continue teaching and working more directly with students and their families". It goes without dispute that Geoff was an outstanding teacher, a strong communicator and dealt with students firmly and fairly and his former statement rang true in the daily life of the school and his association with students. I will always remember his great love of Molong Central School, together with

Remembered by colleagues Kerry and Barbara Adamthwaite MCS “Geoff was very well respected across the whole community . He was a great Teacher and Deputy Principal. He was very dedicated to the School, students and the community. He made an amazing contribution to MCS. Very supportive of staff, students and families. He always maintained a high

his outstanding professionalism and unwavering commitment to the students, staff and parents of the school. He taught at MCS since the 70s and was the heart and soul of the school as Deputy Principal. He was a kind man and considerate of the needs of others and had a positive impact on the lives of students, staff and, I believe, parents. Geoff dedicated himself to public education with its ideals of fairness and social justice, love of learning, empathetic, strong discipline and welfare and care and respect for families and community. Geoff was highly respected by the community of Molong and I have heard many former students ( even those he had stern words with) speak of him with legendary respect and fondness. He was a man of high principles and standards and a great teacher. He will be missed by many.”

level of discipline and respect across the school and never expected more of anyone than he was prepared to give himself. As students matured they came to understand what a positive contribution Geoff made to their education. Every student and staff member would easily remember positive stories about Geoff and the school has become a better place because of his presence and leadership.”

Remembered by the Molong Central School “We were saddened to hear that Mr Geoff Pokoney passed away last week, and we would like to extend our warmest condolences to his family at this difficult time. Mr Pokoney was a much loved and respected Deputy Principal, Teacher and colleague who began teaching at Molong Central School in the early 70’s and went onto become the Deputy Principal in 1997. Throughout that time Mr Pokoney dedicated himself to public education and continued to support Molong Central School up until 2014 when he continued as a temporary teacher. Many staff and community members recall Mr Pokoney’s tenure at Molong Central School with great fondness and he will be forever remembered for having impacted positively on the lives of former students and staff at Molong Central School.”

REG’S BENCH Paddy and Mick were both laid off, so they went to the unemployment office. When asked his occupation, Paddy answered, 'Knicker Stitcher.. I sew da elastic onto ladies' knickers and thongs..' The clerk looked up Knicker Stitcher on his computer and, finding it classified as unskilled labour, he gave him £80 a week unemployment pay. Mick was next in and when asked his occupation replied, 'Diesel Fitter.' Since a diesel fitter was a skilled job, the clerk gave Mick £160 a week. When Paddy found out he was furious.. He stormed back into the office to find out why his friend and co-worker was collecting double his pay. The clerk explained.. 'Knicker Stitchers are unskilled labour and Diesel Fitters are skilled labour.' 'What skill?' yelled Paddy. 'I sew da elastic on da knickers and thongs, then Mick puts 'em over his head and says: 'Yep, diesel fitter.' I was in a public toilet and had just sat down, when I heard a voice from the next cubicle, he said "Hi!, how are you?" Embarrassed, I said, "I'm doing fine". The voice said "So what are you up to?". I said, "Just doing the same as you, sitting here!". He said, "Can I come over?". Annoyed, I said, "rather busy right

now". The voice said, "Listen, I will have to call you back, there's an idiot next door answering all my questions. Eleven people were hanging on a rope, under a helicopter. 10 men and 1 woman. The rope was not strong enough to carry them all, so they decided that one had to leave, because otherwise they were all going to fall. They weren't able to choose that person - until the woman gave a very touching speech. She said that she would voluntarily let go of the rope, because, as a woman, she was used to giving up everything for her husband and kids or for men in general, and was used to always making sacrifices with little in return. As soon as she finished her speech, all the men started clapping . .. Question: Where are you? You are on a horse, galloping at a constant speed. On your right side is a sharp drop off, and on your left side is an elephant travelling at the same speed as you. Directly in front of you is another galloping horse but your horse is unable to overtake it. Behind you is a lion running at the same speed as you and the horse in front of you. What must you do to safely get out of this highly dangerous situation? Answer: You're drunk! Hop off the merry-go-round!

Molong Bowls What a great day Saturday was for the four games of triples played. It was great to see so many bowlers on the rinks, some laughing, some serious and some just happy to see the sun. There were mixed results with the triples. Team Di Wilson went down to team Leigh Brown, with team Wilson carrying a handicap player- the newest member to the team. Team Wilson’s other 2 bowlers had very sore shoulders from carrying their team mate all day. Team Beatty defeated Team McKenzie, with team Beatty also carrying a handicap player. Team Matt Lyons defeated Team Luke Neil, plenty of cursing coming from this rink Team Ian Gosper defeated team Bruno. Wow how we have missed Bruno and his encouraging words to his teammates and fellow bowlers. The winners of these for games will now move to the next round which will be played over the next couple of weeks. Was great to see so many spectators watching these games, also giving great words of wisdom and encouragement. The best bowlers always sit on the sideline. Thanks to the green keepers in having the greens ready for us on Saturday, the frost was just disappearing at 1pm so we could commence the day. Your work is always appreciated. Sunday was an absolute shocker of a day. The chill factor was -2 in Manildra. Molong headed to Manildra for the Adams/ Hughes Trophy which is a yearly event, but due to Covid hasn’t been played since 2019. Molong had 3 teams of threes and 3 teams of fours playing on the day. This was a very tight contest

That would be the smallest yarding at Carcoar for some time with numbers dropping by 750 head. It was a good quality yarding with a few pens of yearlings ideal for the feeders along with some well finished young cattle to suit the processors. There were also some good quality young cattle to suit the restockers but very few grown steers and heifers. There were just 65 cows yarded. Some of the usual buyers were absent due to the small number but those buyers in attendance competed strongly with all sections enjoying rises following the previous sales cheaper market. Young cattle to the trade were 20c dearer with prime vealers selling to 533c/kg. Prime steer yearlings sold from 505c to 525c while the prime heifer yearlings sold from 450c to 545c/kg. Compared to the previous sales cheaper market

Sunday It was a cold morning at the Royal Molong golf course on Sunday and it only seemed to get colder as the morning progressed. Bell was again rugged up like an Eskimo. There were eight and a half players who played a twelve hole stableford event. ( Matt Earle was only half a player because he arrived late and left early to finish a job before any rain might arrive). Scott was again the winner and again organised the golf, thank you. Trevor “Choppers “ Lamb was the runner up. Stubba kept his golf ball inside the fence on the seventh this week but it was my turn for a ricochet off a dead branch and over the fence. I also managed to collect the branch in front of the eighth tee for the second week in a row. Stubba and I were in the first group along with Bell and Choppers. When we were walking from the second green to the third tee we noticed that one of the ladies tee markers was further up on the fairway than it should have been.

Thinking that someone had been playing “silly buggers” we placed it back where it should have been. It was also the same situation on the sixth fairway and a couple of others so again I moved the markers back to where they should have been. It wasn’t until we had finished golf and I was talking to the other players and mentioned what I’d done that I found out that a couple of the lady golfers had purposely moved just one of the markers up those particular fairways to shorten the distance they had to play on those longer fairways. Bro was a great help. He informed me that he knew about the markers being moved but even if he had been in the same playing group as me he probably would have forgotten about them if he had seen me moving them. Ah well, you think you’re doing the right thing and it turns out you stuffed up. Golf again on Sunday, 8.30am for 9am. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to come and play as

feeder steers and heifers were 30c dearer and more in places. Feeder steers sold from 470c to 550c while the feeder heifers sold from 464c to 470c/kg. Young cattle to the restockers were up 50c dearer with the young steers selling from 500c to 638c while the young restocker heifers sold from 460c to 524c/kg. The few grown steers and heifers were up to 30c dearer with the prime grown steers selling from 410c to 465c while prime grown heifers sold to 430c/kg. Cows were 9c dearer with the 2 and 3 scores selling from 265c to 354c/kg. Prime heavy weight cows sold from 344c to 375c to average 364c/kg. Heavy bulls sold to 336c/kg. CTLX SHEEP 20 July It was a fair quality yarding with some good heavy weight lambs along with odd pens of trade weights. There were also fair numbers of lighter plainer lambs showing the effects of the winter. Competition was very restricted from most of the usual buyers. Trade lambs were $35 to $42 cheaper selling from $80 to $172/head to average between 600c and 625c/kg cwt. Heavy weight lambs were $44 to $50 cheaper with the lambs over 24kg selling from $140 to $184/head to average between 560c and 595c/kg cwt. Merino lambs were also considerably cheaper with trade weights selling from $84 to $115/head. Restocker lambs were $25 cheaper with the better lambs to fatten selling from $80 to $125 and the feeders paid to $154/head. First cross ewe lambs sold to the restockers from $125 to $140/head. Hoggets sold to $148/head.

between the two towns. At one stage, Ben Allcorn was witnessed to be turning the score board numbers over and they nearly ended up in the Manildra skate park. To say he was coming second in his game is correct. Molong came away with the win and the trophy winning 92-89. Well done team Molong, its good to have the trophy where it belongs. Thanks for a great day of bowls Manildra and to the Manildra bowling ladies for supplying some yummy sandwiches after the game.
