I love Molong by Rozzi

Dear Editor, Great photo of me, Les Dean, proudly holding one of four of my winning ribbons in the wool section of the Molong Show on Sunday. (Les is pictured above far right with Will Lee, Gus Shannon and Don MacDonald). I must admit having entered four ram fleeces in the super fine section and getting first and second in each class - I was the only competitor with 16 micron superfine wool. Despite this, I receive many handshakes from my fellow woolgrowers in the photo emphasizing the competitive spirit of the Molong Show, encouraging one and all to throw their hat in the ring, have a go, or have a crack! And what a cracking show it was, building on the foundations of previous show committees, the organisers are to be congratulated. But getting back to the photo, as a small landowner, I felt like a black thistle (prickle) standing in a field of prime ripe wheat, standing with the well-recognized woolgrowers of the district, hence the not-too-proud title of the prickle farmer from Packham Drive. I must admit the recent very wet season allowed the thistles to get away from me, but I will soon have them under control so will have to change my title, perhaps to ‘superfine wool producer’. Son Scott reckons I will have to get a much bigger hat. Regards to all. Les Dean Molong

Happy Birthday to popular Molong (one-time Manildra resident), Brian Gersbach who celebrated his 70 something birthday at a family dinner at the Freemasons Hotel. Photographed right, with his grandson Clarrie Pratten, with a celebratory beer in hand - Brian is still looking pretty good and enjoying life. How old is Brian, really? We think he was pulling the Express photographer’s leg when he said 21! (If only!)

(Left) The first customers to Rozzi’s Plants and Pots, Alex and Freddie, chose tomato plants and a gorgeous pink Rannucula. Freddie was keen to try Rozzi’s magic companion planting advice - plant the tomato’s next to Basil and Marigolds to naturally keep the insects away. Rozzi has moved from the still-flooddamaged soils from last November’s flood at her railway cottage to accepting a kind offer from Jane at the Molong Flower Room (upper Bank Street) where the plants (vegies and florals) now love and live in the shady courtyard area at the back. Customer entry through the shop or better still, at the back of the premises (car parking available).

The Gosper kids enjoying an amazing pizza at the Freemason’s Hotel last Sunday arvo. We first spotted Louis (right) who had chocolate smeared all over his face as he hungrily devoured huge slices of the dessert pizza. Benji in the middle was very content with the blend of pizza base, heaps of chocolate, strawberries, banana ... Big brother (left) might have missed out on a few slices. These gorgeous ones are the sons of Elli and Karl Gosper - and much loved by the local community.

NSW DISASTER Molong Central School Year FUNDING FINALLY ON 12 Graduation Assembly THE TABLE 2023.

STATEMENT - Andrew Gee MP Member for Calare It is encouraging to see that the NSW Government has committed $2.3 billion for natural disaster recovery efforts in this year’s budget. This funding now has to be delivered on the ground to our region and it needs to happen in a way that ensures we have equality of disaster support with other parts of the state. The full suite of state/federal disaster measures now needs to be activated for our region without delay. For the past ten months, since that terrible day in November, I have been calling for equality of disaster funding for the storm and flood-hit communities of Eugowra, Cudal, Molong, Canowindra, Manildra and Wellington. Our disaster-hit residents were treated as second class citizens by the previous NSW government. This was a failure of the National Party, which had the opportunity to activate the same level of support the Northern Rivers received for our disasterhit region when they were in government, but did not do so. The residents of our region deserve the vital support that their fellow Australians in Lismore and the Northern Rivers received. In mid-August, State Member for Orange Phil Donato and I met with NSW Minister for Emergency Services, Jihad Dib, and NSW Planning and Public Spaces Minister, Paul Scully, in Eugowra, Molong and Cudal. Mr Donato and I both feel that it is outrageous and unjust that some parts

of NSW are being prioritised for disaster Farewell, good luck and we are extremely proud of you all. We wish you all the best in your future endeavours. Molong Central School resumes on the 9th of relief over others. Phil and I received a positive hearing, October for everyone. and I think it helped that the Ministers saw for themselves the damage this disaster caused, and got to speak to our local residents to hear their experiences firsthand. I’m hopeful that the funding committed in the NSW budget today will be a positive step forward for our devastated communities, and I will keep advocating on behalf of disaster-hit areas in the Central West until our region receives: a) The Resilient Homes Program, which enables home buybacks, home raising and home retrofits. b) The Community Assets Program, which helps local councils to rebuild their storm and flood-hit towns and villages. c) The Northern Rivers Commercial Property – Return to Business Support Grant, which assists commercial property owners to help get their tenants back in business quicker. d) The $75,000 Special Disaster Grants for our fire-hit farmers in the Hill End region, which would assist in covering the costs of re-fencing, re-stocking and buying feed and; e) Funding for our disaster-hit roads and bridges. It is disappointing that residents and business owners have had to wait ten months for the NSW government to commit funding to help them get back on their feet, and the wait continues to hear how much of this funding will flow directly to our region.

Happy 90th Birthday to Lorraine Oates One of Molong's former GPs, Lorraine Oates (formerly Dr. Lorraine Livingston) celebrated her 90th birthday with family and friends at the Coach House last Saturday afternoon. Born in Canberra in the early 1930's Lorraine was a gifted student who had her sights set on medicine as a career. Completing her education at the Canberra High School - Lorraine gained access to Sydney University to study medicine as part of a small group of women who had also gained entry. In 1966 Dr. Livingston came to Molong with her family (husband Vic, daughters Roz and Julie and young sons Bill and David) - settling into the town's GP's residence and surgery in Gidley Street. Vic, a returned serviceman, was a member of the Oates family - a hardworking farming family who had settled at 'Strathmore' in the Belgravia area. In 1971 the Oates family moved back to Orange where Lorraine continued her career. In recent years, Lorraine returned to Molong to live near daughter Julie and within the town community where she was warmly welcomed back - loved and remembered by residents for her kindness, warmth, professional care ... and, great sense of humour.

Playgroup partners young and ‘young at heart’

It turns out Molong playgroup isn’t just for the young, as a group of young-at-heart seniors got to experience the wonders of learning through play and share experience at the same time. Cabonne Family Day Care and Cabonne Home Support recently joined together to hold

8

a playgroup session for seniors and children. Following on from the successful ABC program, Old People’s Home for Four Year Olds, the benefits of interactions between seniors and the young can make a significant difference to one’s life and meaning. The initiative allows participants the opportunity to build relationships, provide meaning and happiness, and maintain connections with their community. Due to the emotional and mental benefits of inter-generational friendships, a playgroup session like this is planned to be held once a month. Activities including painting, drawing, reading, making music, and more, are beneficial for both seniors and children. Day care coordinators would love to see more participants next session - if you’re intyerested in joining or want further information vcontact Cabonne Home Support on 6344 1199.

Do they allow loud laughing in Hawaii , or just a low ha. I'll see my way out. Lance is an uncommon name these days, but in medieval times people were named Lance a lot I went to McDonalds today and ate a kid's meal. It was OK but his Mum was furious. I tried to buy a happy meal with fries but the cashier wanted cash. My friend Jack says he can communicate with vegetables... Jack and the beans talk.. I was always told that the grass is greener on the other side. My lawn looked like crap so I decided to go outside and turn it over. What a bunch of liars!

MOLONG EXPRESS, Thursday 28 September 2023

Molong Golf by the Happy Hacker The Manildra Open was the focus for local golfers last Sunday and as usual Manildra put on an excellent event. The course was presented in top condition and the food and prizes were top notch. Forty two players completed with Mitch Gibson of Manildra the A Grade scratch winner with 71 of the stick. Molong had 7 representatives with just one prize coming home. Pleased to report that that was myself with the B grade Stableford runner up prize. Proving that a plump handicap can overcome all sorts of problems! On the home front 6 players played a two person Ambrose with no winners decided in a very casual event. So what has happened to the Ghost Walker you ask? Well he’s out of action at the moment. Well I’ll call him Gerry and Gerry went to the doctor last week complaining that everywhere I touch my body it hurts. Show me said the doctor. Gerry poked his ankle then screamed in pain, then poked his knee and yelled even louder, finally touching his forehead and cried out in pain. The doctor intervened saying Gerry I think I know what you’re problem is, you’ve broken you’re finger!! Hopefully Gerry will be able to handle his pen in a week or two, meanwhile you’re stuck with me. This coming Sunday we are planning to hold an 18 hole individual event for those who’d like an early start, 8 for 8-30. For those looking for a more casual hit a 12 hole Ambrose event 8-30 for 9 start, all welcome. Regards the Happy Hacker.

Sport JUNIOR SOCCER please come along to the MDSC AGM on the 13 October. More information regarding this will be posted on the MDSC Facebook page.
