Andrew Gee MP achieves Flood Inquiry with focus on insurance P.5

Hard decisions facing Molong bowls and sport clubs By Paul Mullins

The reported effects of the 2022 flood have naturally concentrated on damage to homes, shops, businesses, roads and town infrastructure throughout Cabonne. These have received priority attention of the council and government. But the flood also affected other important ingredients of life especially sporting and recreation facilities. These include the Molong Bowling Club, the Hockey field, and numerous other sports venues. The members and supporters of these clubs are now facing hard decisions about whether to refurbish, rebuild or relocate. These are compounded by problems with insurance coverage and the cost involved in rehabilitation. Molong Bowling Club the members will meet on Sunday to hear of progress with insurance claims and to discuss their future. The centrally located club is more than just two greens for lawn bowls. For over 50 years it has been a venue for countless community functions and events ranging from fundraisers, parties and dances, birthdays and weddings to wakes - catered for by the club's dedicated women and volunteers. These have been critical for the financial viability of the club. Bowls itself relied on its facilities including the auditorium, kitchen and pleasant outdoor area for the holding of local gatherings and celebrations.

Bowls includes inter-town formal pennants as well as social Wednesdays, BRAG on Friday nights and weekends social bowls. Options facing members include: 1. Rebuilding the club in-situ. As mentioned above this would necessarily need to include not only a bar and cool-room but also the auditorium, kitchen, and other facilities. It is unlikely that insurance money will cover this adequately. 2. Relocate the whole thing to higher ground namely the showground. This would not involve building a new fully fitted-out self contained clubhouse. Cabonne Council has long had proposals to co-locate golf with other sporting facilities around a fully functional country/sports club. This is unlikely to be attractive to bowling club members who are used to being close to home, get there on their gophers or walking - as well as cars. 3. Revive the 50+ years old talk of amalgamating

with the Molong RSL Club. The club has a large block of land at the rear and the purchase of one or two adjacent houses would fit the bill. And, the club already has an auditorium, bars, bistro, kitchens and everything a bowling club would ever need. Hard decisions, indeed! Whilst relocation to the showgrounds might be attractive in terms of gaining government grants and funding for infrastructure it has some serious drawbacks. While it is logical to think that if Molong is to grow new housing, say like North Orange, - the showground will likely be the direction it will grow into. However, under current zoning all residential blocks outside of current town limits are stuck on minimum block sizes of 5 acres. There is no town water or sewerage connections. What new home-maker in this age will contemplate tank water and a septic out the back. Given the massive costs involved and the years it would take, this is hardly a shorter-term option. No doubt a solution will arise. There is always a gem of an idea for those who listen with a broad mind and on eye on the long term future. Good luck to the beloved Bowlo with their meeting on Sunday.

Around the traps

Lovely to reunite a family member with some old treasures. The Molong Historical Museum recently posted a photo (below) of a beautiful old violin handmade by George Neville of Copper Hill. The museum curators were delighted when George’s great nephew came to the museum especially to find his Neville and Farrell family history. He was thrilled to be reunited with his great-uncle George Neville’s handmade violin and the very old timber clock housed in the museum. He was provided plenty of

information from family records and was then able to locate headstones in the cemetery. We are always so excited to share our knowledge and history with people and this “family history” tourism brings many visitors to our beautiful little town. Interested in who you are? Head to the Molong Museum any Sunday and Thursday from 10am- 2pm (good idea to book in before so that our volunteers can start looking for your family history). RSL farewells Ben after three years, and welcomes a package deal - Evan and Connor

RSL Chefs Connor Aimes, Evan Butcher are welcomed by Ben Agar who will leave for Sydney after three years in Molong. There’s been a change of chef’s at the Molong RSL Bistro with Ben Agar leaving for Sydney after three years creating some of the best menus and delicious foods for locals, visitors and the many events held at the venue. “I love Molong,” he said. “It’s a really positive town and working at the club has been a worthwhile experience. Mary (Mulhall - President of the club) is the best boss I have ever had.” We wish Ben well in his new role and life in Sydney where he is looking forward to a Monday to Friday job in the hospitality sector. Welcome to Evan Butcher and Connor Amies who have come to the RSL Bistro in

Molong from Waratahs Club (Orange). Evan has been a chef for some 18 years and Connor has cheffed for eight years. “We came together as a ‘package deal,” said Connor. “Evan has been my mentor and we really like working together.” What kind of foods will they serve? “Plain, country-style foods” said Evan. Last week, the Express really enjoyed the saltwater Barramundi served with baked vegetables. On Sunday regular lunchers were very pleased with the slow braised lamb shanks served with mash and peas. “Stunning” was the response after the “meltin-your-mouth meat” had been eaten - all that was left on the plates were bones. The RSL Bistro is open Wednesdays to Sundays for lunch and dinner.

Thanks to the efforts of former Cabonne councillor and Deputy Mayor, Wendy Pankhurst, Molong will see the return of a local tradition - in fact international tradition - the Debutante Ball. The Express has heard that a small advert placed for Wendy by the Molong Express has received positive response from young women and men for what has been a centuriesold tradition. Wendy’s approach in bringing back the Debutante Ball (also an important charity fundraising event) is creating positive interest around town and district. So far, 13 debs have come forward for the big event on 16 September 2023. Who will be the trainer? Maybe Ann Wright will be forced out of retirement? Ann has trained many a deb and partners in social etiquette and traditional dance routines for generations of Molong and District’s young

people. Keep the date on your calendar. We should all be heading to the event to applaude the return of one of Molong and district’s traditions. In the meantime, the Express is looking for past Deb photos held in Molong, Manildra, Cumnock, Cudal throughout history. Call Rozzi 0490 734 650.

(Above) True to his promise: Andrew Gee MP held a coffee meeting for floodaffected community members at Molong's Lime & Stone to introduce Stephen Jones, Minister for Financial Services and Assistant Treasurer. The Minister was concerned about the problem residents have with their insurance companies.

Inquiry shines light on 'shocking' insurance for disaster-hit communities

The Independent Federal Member for Calare, Andrew Gee, has welcomed the announcement that the federal government will launch a parliamentary inquiry into the response of insurers to the 2022 storm and flood events including those that occurred in Central Western NSW. "Since this disaster-hit our region, we have heard many stories of heartache and heartbreak from local residents and business people who have had their homes and livelihoods destroyed," said Mr Gee. Mr Gee said the rebuilding and recovery process was made harder, and tragedy worse, by the "coldhearted and shocking response" of insurers to policyholders. "The anger in our communities is white hot, and I don't think we are alone, with other regions across Australia left reeling from the callous conduct of insurance companies," he said. "From long delays in claims processing, to widespread knockbacks. It’s taken a huge toll cross our region. Mr Gee said there was a massive power imbalance between policy holders and insurance companies. "At the end of the day, if a policy holder wants to fight a knockback from an insurer, they’re going to need to fork out big dollars for an expert hydrology report and also a solicitor," he said.

Australians expect insurers to be assessing claims in a generous and kind-hearted way, nothing less. Well, that was prior to the minor storm/ major flooding events which occurred in the CBD during the La Nina 2021/22. The downpour created stormwater runoff throughout town ... and in turn, what became a regular flooding of shops, hotels and businesses in the lower areas of Bank and Watson Streets. Traders, business owners, building owners, and the wider community are, understandably, 'over' the now constant clean-up of minor

70 years of Molong Rugby Union and Molong Magpies

1971 U18 Magpie Legends L-R Ian Gosper, Paul Murray, Terry Rothery, Philip McKenzie Toby Lyons, Bill Kilby, Bob Alexander and ring-in Bill Foy.

Since the Bloomfield boys (Norm and Ray) set their sights on playing local Rugby Union there has been ‘hot competition’ between rugby league (the longtime favoured footy in town) rugby union - and then rivalry between the various towns and villages in the competitions. In 1954, the story goes that the Bloomfield brothers, ‘Bullet ‘Kevin Dean, and others wandered down to the Freemason’s Hotel for a meeting. Now, that was an unusual (and miraculous) move in Molong where the top pub, the Telegraph Hotel, was the meeting (and drinking place) for the town’s long standing Rugby League players. Apparently, the residents of Molong and District were divided (one of the many times in Molong’s history) about the break-away from traditional footy. But the boys got themselves together - brought in some top guns - and Molong can boast

a new code that emerged as ‘winners’ many a time of the changing region’s competitions. Many a grand final was won - maybe just as many lost. However, ‘passion’ became the winner of many a game over the past 70 years. Old boys came back to Molong last weekend - some of the many characters of the game. Most came from school footy to wear Magpies guernseys. The smiles and the bantering heard around the Rec. and Telegraph Pub on Saturday - not forgetting Saturday night - was filled with the humour of the teams, the game, and other stories (mostly fetched!) Congratulations to the former, and today’s Magpies in not only playing for your town - region (some State) for helping to keep the Rugby tradition alive for today and tomorrow’s Juniors. Then again, in 70 years time there will surely be Magpie Hens representing their towns.

REG’S BENCH Why Parents Drink A father passing by his son's bedroom was astonished to see that his bed was nicely made and everything was picked up. Then he saw an envelope, propped up prominently on the pillow that was addressed to 'Dad.' With the worst premonition he opened the envelope with trembling hands and read the letter. Dear Dad: It is with great regret and sorrow that I'm writing you. I had to elope with my new girlfriend because I wanted to avoid a scene with Mom and you. I have been finding real passion with Stacy and she is so nice. But I knew you would not approve of her because of all her piercing, tattoos, tight motorcycle clothes and the fact that she is much older than I am. But it' s not only the passion...Dad she's pregnant. Stacy said that we will be very happy. She owns a trailer in the woods and has a stack of firewood for the whole

winter. We share a dream of having many more children. Stacy has opened my eyes to the fact that marijuana doesn't really hurt anyone. We'll be growing it for ourselves and trading it with the other people that live nearby for cocaine and ecstasy. In the meantime we will pray that science will find a cure for AIDS so Stacy can get better. She deserves it. Don't worry Dad. I'm 15 and I know how to take care of myself. Someday I'm sure that we will be back to visit so that you can get to know your grandchildren. Love, Your Son John PS. Dad, none of the above is true. I'm over at Tommy's house. I Just wanted to remind you that there are worse things in life than the report card that's in my center desk drawer. I love you. Call me when it's safe to come home.

Molong Golf

MOLONG BOWLS

by the Ghost Walker Sunday at the Royal Molong Golf Course (Note: The Express takes no responsibility for the constant “Royal” claim. We are in touch with the Palace for advice.) saw six golf clubs represented in the Central West small towns shield event. Besides Molong there were teams from Cumnock, Yeoval, Manildra, Blayney and Wattle Flat. Each club had six players except for Cumnock who had five players. We had an extra player with Balley on hand so he played for the Cumnock club to bring them up to six players. This was an eighteen hole individual stableford event as well as a teams event with the best four individual scores for each club going towards their team score. The individual event was won by Molong’s Troy Warner with thirty eight points. Alan Sharpe from Manildra was second on thirty seven points followed by Ian Maclean from Wattle Flat in third place on thirty five points on a countback from Les Tremain from Yeoval in fourth place also on thirty five points. There were another five players also on thirty five points who lost out on the countback. In the team’s event Molong are in first place with one hundred and thirty eight points. Manildra have one hundred and thirty two points, Wattle Flat one hundred and thirty points, Yeoval with one hundred and twenty seven points, Cumnock with one hundred and twenty four points and Blayney with one hundred and twenty one points. The Molong golf club has some wonderful volunteers who had the course in pristine condition. All the visiting players commented on how great the course was as well as the greens being so consistent for putting. A big thanks to our lady golfers for catering for the event and to Erin for helping and Kerry for organising the teams and the scoring. Al hasn’t been able to play golf lately but came out to cook the bbq. He reckons some of the sausages might have been a bit burnt but hey, there nothing wrong with a well cooked sausage. Thanks Al. The next event in this competition is set down for Blayney on Sunday September 17 but in the meantime at Molong it’s golf as normal on Sunday, 8.30am for 9am

Roving Report – Margot Brown Sunday social bowls has continued of a Sunday, with numbers dwindling over the weeks. Good to see the same reliable bowlers each week come for a laugh and time to socialise. We will continue for a few more weeks and see how numbers go. Sunday from 11am – 1.30pm. Don’t have to register just rock on up and we make it up as we go. Cost is $10 covering green fees and sausage sizzle. Wednesday social bowls continues as well. The bar is stocked for beverages and it’s a good social afternoon if you have a few hours on Wednesdays. The Board of Directors would like to advise members, who were financial members before the 14th of November 2022 that there will be an Extraordinary General meeting at the club this Sunday 30th July commencing at 10.30am. The meeting will be an information/ questions and answers regarding the progress of insurance from the

November floods. Following the meeting hang around for a game of social bowls and sausage sizzle. Congratulations to President Chris Beatty who competed in the 2022/2023 State Open Reserve Singles in Wollongong last week. Chris won his first match 25-19, lost his second match 23-25 then won his third game 25-14. Chris came second in his section, which is an outstanding result. Congratulations Chris. You will get to Boggera sooner than you think. The President, Board of Directors and members offer their condolences to the family of Tommy Dean. Tommy was a regular bowler at the club for many years. In his later years would ride his gopher to the club and sit and watch a few games and have a few cold ales. Tommy was a popular member, always had a yard and will be missed by many. Rest easy Uncle Tom, never a truer gentleman to be found. The club would also like to wish Kerry and Andy Hicks all the best on their sea

change. Both have been avid bowlers in the Brag comp and always brought laughter to the greens. Hope to see you back in Molong, you have both been great advocates for our wonderful town and will be missed. Hope you have a few spare rooms for the visitors when they come knocking on your door. A big yahhhh for the day to the Shed World crew, Welby, Simon Wright and Darrin Whalan who gave up their Saturday morning and moved the playground equipment back for us in no time. When we have sponsors like Shed World who make a big job into a quick job, thanks don’t go far enough. A huge job made easy when you have the right gear. Well wishes go to Pez, for a speedy recovery. We are thinking of you Pez and look forward to you back cooking the BBQ soon xx A team of 4 will be playing in the City of Dubbo Prelude Fours this Saturday, good luck team Molong. On Sunday the golf ladies again catered for the inter town Pennants. The teams came from Wattle Flat, Blayney, Yeoval, Cumnock, Manildra and Molong. The teams consisted of 6 players in each team and played an 18 hole Stableford with Molong running out the winners with 138 points, runners up were Manildra with 132 points, and in third place was Wattle Flat with 130 points. It was a great day for golf the sun was shining and the wind stayed away, and the course was looking fantastic. The individual winners were Troy Warner from Molong, 2nd was Alan Sharpe from Manildra, 3rd was Ian McLean from Wattle Flat, and 4th was Les Tremain from Yeoval.

‘Friday Fitness Frenzy at Hunter Caldwell’ After a break for the holidays, there was no easing back into training on Friday, with Coach Rich Keniry (Right) hosting the annual beep test during this weeks session. For those that may not be familiar with the beep test, it involves continuous running between two lines, set 20m apart, in time to recorded beeps. The test is used to estimate an athletes aerobic capacity. There are 21 levels, with level one commencing at an approximate pace of 8km/hr, increasing to 9km/hr for level two and then increasing 0.5km/hr for every level after. Rich enjoys hosting the beep tests atleast once or twice throughout the soccer season. It’s fantastic to see players, coaches Congratulations and parents get involved, and even to Alex who was some younger siblings too!. Well awarded player of done to everyone who participated, the week for Under and pushed themselves to improve 6 Phoenix.
