Town Talk

by Rozzi and contributors

Another happy week in Molong as our gorgeous town continues to rebuild in spirit and soul after the November flood. “There’s no stopping us now ... Molong is on the go - yet again!!” What a night! The Molong Rocks Mini Festival was held for the first time last Saturday afternoon/evening at the Telegraph Hotel in Bank Street.

See story and pics Pgs 8 - 9

(Above) Two of the happy ‘Molong Rocks’ crowd. We love this Molong kid!! The town and patrons of the Molong RSL, customers of the IGA, and HEBA’s fitness centre and gym were sad (or happy?) to farewell the delightful Hayden Bliss who graduated from MCS last year and has now headed off to Wollongong for Uni. We wish Hayden, and his parents Chad and Nicole Bliss and daughters farewell as they leave Molong for new career positions, schools and Uni. They have been fantastic residents during their time in Molong and much loved. Hayden is currently keen to

The Christmas decos contributed by local families and Hopper & Lynn have now gone. But the boards over windows in Bank Street remain. What can we do to add new colour and fun to the damaged shops??? Photos, images, painting??

return to Molong? Mmm Wollongong, surf, sand, Uni life ... ?? Well, we hope he does ... We need exciting future leaders to go, spread their wings, experiences, education and knowledge ... and return to keep Molong building.

We hear there is movement at the two local pubs. Les and Cheryl (Telegraph Hotel) are counting the days they have left before a new licensee takes over. Story soon. Kim Stojanov is back at the Freemasons Hotel after caring for son Cody in Wollongong. Freemasons owner, John, is to rebuild the kitchen, dining, bar areas damaged by the November flood - and we are hoping to finish the upstairs rooms to provide accommodation for visitors/tourists. No doubt Kim has ideas flowing ... and they are exciting!! Goooo Molong!

After buying a ticket in the Molong Flood Appeal’s rocking horse fundraiser (donated by Carmel and Kelly Boucher) young Aug. Lee was keen to take the horse home. Disappointed ... young August went home without the horse. However, luck was on his side ... His ticket was the first out of the barrel at the Molong Pharmacy. Take a look at Aug’s huge smile when the rocking horse arrived at his home - in time for Christmas. Well done Aug. and thank you to Carmel and Kelly Boucher for their wonderful donation to help others (they too were impacted by the November flood).

Olivia contributes to the Express Olivia Greenwood of Molong is 12 and going into Year 7 at Kinross this year. Olivia has contributed a “Back to School” word find puzzle for our younger (and not so young) readers. See page 11.

Let’s get communicating Last week in ‘your’ Molong Express we introduced this Questions and Answers (Q&A) page to provide a path to Council for resident’s concerns of wide general interest. We receive them frequently here at the Express.

Council Response

Given the short timeframe provided to Council to prepare a response, the below statement has been provided in relation to the questions that appeared in the Molong Express on Thursday, 19 January 2023. Cabonne Council staff are actively working across all flood impacted communities in continuing to support emergency and immediate flood recovery. This in addition to ensuring that we continue to maintain services to those communities that were not directly impacted by the November 2022 flood event. Council staff are also working to identify long-term recovery requirements – including those that will require additional funding. Like all impacted residents and businesses, Council is also liaising with our insurers to understand what assets may be covered by insurance. This includes sourcing a number of individual quotes to provide to our insurer. As all community members will appreciate, getting quotes is particularly challenging at this time of year. Unfortunately, the restoration of a number of community assets will take a period of time as Council works through this process. Key priorities including Molong Rail Bridge The sheer scope of the floods means we are yet to fully realise the long-term impacts on the environment, the economy, and the health and wellbeing of the community. Council is working with the impacted communities across Cabonne – including with Molong - to understand their needs, and also in developing plans for the future of their towns. We have also activated advisory groups to ensure there is a true collaboration and to enable communities can share their valuable input. These plans will outline key short and long-term priorities that Council will build into its Operational Plan for 2023-24. In addition, Council is continuing to lobby both NSW and Federal Governments for further recovery support for Molong including flood safe recreation and sporting facilities, funding for an extension of the voluntary purchase scheme, and funding to extend the Molong Rail Bridge to increase waterway capacity and hazard reduction. Council has made several representations to the State with regards to improvements sought for rail

We asked Council to advise on the questions we posed last week and General Manager Brad Byrnes has responded. Thank you Brad for your prompt response.

infrastructure in Molong. This has included several onsite meetings with the Deputy Premier, Transport Minister and representatives of the NSW rail maintenance contractors. The message from these meetings has been that the proposed solution is complex and will take time to deliver. In the meantime, Council Officers have developed a project plan to dredge underneath the rail bridge so to maximise the under-structure area to promote water flow. Unfortunately, the ongoing high creek flows caused by ongoing rainfall have prevented machinery to the site. Waterway clean-up Council is not responsible for management of waterways, but are working with EPA and NSW Fisheries to address environmental concerns in relation to debris build-up in local waterways. Molong Flood Study Cabonne Council has engaged consultants to undertake a review and update of the Molong Flood Study and Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan, the latter which was completed in 2011. The first stage of the project is the review and update of the Molong Flood Study which will involve the development of state-of-theart computer models which will be used to define flood behaviour along Molong Creek, Boree Hollow, Moss Hollow Creek and Foys Creek. The study will also define flood behaviour in areas that are subject to flood impacts caused by inundation of the stormwater drainage system. The Flood Study is an important first step in the floodplain risk management process for this area, and will be managed by Council according to the NSW Government’s Flood Prone Lands Policy. The various stages of the Flood Study will be as follows: • Review previous flooding investigations that have been undertaken at Molong. • Undertake survey of the creeks and stormwater drainage system, as well as the collection of data on historic flooding. • Preparation of state-of-the-art computer models of the creeks and stormwater drainage system to determine flooding and drainage patterns, flood levels, flow velocities and depths of inundation. • Preparation of a Flood Study report which will document

the findings of the investigation. The draft Flood Study report will be placed on public exhibition following completion of the investigation seeking community feedback on its findings. Following the completion of the Flood Study, the consultants will undertake the preparation of a Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan which will assist Council in refining strategic plans for mitigating and managing the effects of the existing, future and continuing flood risk at Molong. Council has developed a community questionnaire for Molong residents which is due to be distributed shortly. It is an important first step in the preparation of a Flood Study is to identify the availability of information on historic flooding in the study area. Molong CBD Activation Project More than ever, it is important that Bank Street is enticing and inviting to both locals and visitors alike. The Molong CBD Activation Project is in the testing stage currently. Council is testing the construction methods offsite to ensure a smooth construction once the work begins. A construction timeline is being developed, with Council to release a visual guide for residents and businesses which will be distributed prior to construction. A Molong business survey has been available for businesses to complete regarding deliveries during the construction period. This information is being used to ensure minimal impact to how businesses will operate during this period. When new information is available it will be distributed to Bank Street Businesses and published on Council’s website at: www.cabonne.nsw.gov.au/Molong Community responses? Send to the Express.

We have added this week’s questions. Send yours in 0448231180 or molongex@bigpond. net.au or P.O. Box 38 Molong.

Question: I note the positions vacant advertised in last week’s Express. Are these positions to be filled by Cabonne based residents, or new residents willing to make Cabonne their permanent home? Or filled by consultants? Question: I have heard that there are currently a higher number of employees working within the buildings of Cabonne Council (i.e. managers, supervisors, admin staff, project staff) than those employed in the outdoor on the ground employees. Is this true? Question: How many consultants are currently working with Cabonne Council - and how many are planned to be contracted during 2023 and for what projects?

Orange electorate seniors to save $250 as applications open for new popular travel card open

Seniors living in the Orange Electorate will save $250 on travel costs thanks to the NSW Nationals in the state government’s Regional Seniors Travel Card. Candidate for the National Party in the Orange electorate, Tony Mileto said applications are now open for a fourth year, and they are encouraging seniors to take advantage of the initiative now. “The $250 pre-paid Visa card can be used on fuel, taxis, electric charging stations, prebooked NSW TrainLink regional trains and coaches, helping those eligible with the cost of getting from A to B. “We know how much seniors value this card – it can mean a few extra visits to the grandkids, or make seeing friends locally, getting to the shops, or attending medical appointments much easier.” Nationals Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Sam Farraway said he wanted the number of cards issued this year to break the 2022 record, when 362,000 cards were issued. “I really encourage all eligible seniors to get their applications in and save themselves $250 on travel costs for this year,” Mr Farraway said. “It’s disappointing we’ve heard nothing from the Chris Minns Labor Party on how they will help our seniors in the bush deal with the cost

Happy Chinese Year 2023 from Kaye & Phillip of Molong's Wing Hang Chinese Restaurant and Take-Away. "We invite our many customers to come on into our restaurant in Bank Street and celebrate this important date on with us on our calendar" said Kaye and Phjillip. "Organise a table and bring your friends along for a delicious lunch or dinner (open 7 days a week) and let us help you to decide on a variety of shared dishes for your special meal." "Chinese New Year is about celebrating and the sharing of foods with your loved ones, work colleagues, neighbours etc. said Phillip. Please phone us on 63668614

of living. Labor actually opposed this card when we first announced it and then they did a U-turn and wanted the card for people in the city. Tony Mileto noted that Chris Minns didn’t include regional NSW in his ‘vision’ for the state or in his budget-in-reply speech. “I have a real fear Labor will cut a number of programs and projects that benefit regional NSW to fund their election commitments in Western Sydney.” Tony Mileto said. The Regional Seniors Travel Card has injected $196 million into regional economies, with more than one million cards issued since the scheme started in 2020. Applications are now open and will close on November 30, 2023. Seniors can apply online at service.nsw. gov.au, by visiting their local Service NSW shopfront or calling 1800 569 070.

MOLONG EXPRESS, Thursday 26 January 2023

Farewell to Peter Davis - "Little Pete of Betts Street" Molong recently farewelled one of our favourite, gentle souls, Peter Davis a long-time resident of Betts Street. Known by locals as "Little Pete" became a resident of Betts Street when he moved here with Jan and son Greg from Orange some 25 years ago. Before his illness Pete's time was spent helping others - mowing, visiting, driving neighbours and friends to appointments, shopping, and bingo and to his beloved bowling club where he was a keen and very good bowler - and also a member of pennant teams. Including teaming up with Bruno Bennett, Steve Shannon and Paul Mullins and travelling with them to play in competitions around the region. Peter's kindness to others was noticed when a lady who lived in Betts Street was battling to keep the lawns down when her mower broke down. She was so grateful as a single mother, she placed an ad. in the Molong Express to thank the "kind person who had mown her lawn". Peter never told the lady that it was he who had taken his mower to her place when she was not home. Instead, he remained anonymous - not expecting any gratitude. "I knew she needed help so I gave it" said Peter.

Born in Orange Pete lived with his mother Thelma, father John and older sister Carmeline known as Judy. Unfortunately his mother, Thelma passed away when Peter was only 9 years old which meant that he and Judy were sent to live with his Aunty & Uncle in Guildford, Sydney. Attending school Peter was often caned by the nuns because he wasn't learning. They did not realise that he was deaf. He did not complete primary school due to his deafness but was content to stay at home helping his aunty with chores around the house until he had his 14th birthday which meant that he was old enough to get a special license and able to find a job. His first in a factory where asbestos safety equipment was made. There he cleaned the floor and ran errands. He remained at the factory for a number of years. His next job was at the Australian Abrasives factory making pocket sharpening stones until the business closed. In the 1970's he gained a position with what was called the DMR (Department of Main Roads) in Granville where he worked as a Linemarker. A number of years later he transferred to Rockdale when DMR became the RTA. During this time he met and married Jan and they had a son Greg. They lived at Lidcombe and both worked hard. When people asked Peter what he did for work - he would say "I walked from Palm Beach to Waterfall". Jan commented that this was indeed, true when Peter worked for the DMR - "he was in the road gang marking white lines and setting out reflectors". Jan continued "Apparently it was a harder process back then - where tinyl glass beads were mixed in with the white paint and other materials to stay in place on the roads and to sparkle in order to be seen at night".

A job advancement came and Peter was moved into an office where he was required to allocate work to contractors - spending many extra hours of his days making sure all work was done on costings etc. "He did so well for a man who didn't have much of an education" said Jan. Lawn bowls came into Peter's life when living in Sydney where he played both social bowls and championship events. When he moved to Molong he joined the local bowling club enjoying both social and championship events and enjoyed the entertainment offered by the club. He loved the friendship he developed with other members and would often say "they are like a family to me". When the family moved to Molong Peter took up cleaning jobs and odd jobs around town. "He would try his hand at anything" said Jan. "He worked at Barnseys, the Freemasons Hotel, Telegraph Hotel as a cleaner and was happy to do so". Late in the afternoon he would walk up to the Top Pub and have a couple of beers and play Keno. A simple pleasure that helped him to remain in contact with people. He enjoyed the people of Molong and the quiet country life. But he didn't like the cold! As his illness progressed, he developed breathing problems and emphysema later in his life. He had been a smoker but gave it up many years before. "He felt that his health problems were likely due to the asbestos, glues and chemicals he had worked with all his life" said Jan. Since Peter's time in hospital and recent passing his best mate 'Tiger' the cat has been searching for him.

Jan & Peter

Whenever Pete went out, Tiger would sit and wait for him at the front gate. Now Tiger is waiting...waiting and waiting. No longer able to play its favourite game of disappearing to Billy Wherritt's place just down the road in Betts Street. "He's here under my car" Billy or Bob over the road would yell out to Peter. Who would then stand around to see Tiger's latest trick of forcing Peter to get down on his hands and knees - and pull Tiger out and carry him home". It worked!. "Peter will be greatly missed by his extended family" said Jan "as well as his many friends". "Little Pete" - one of nature's true gentlemen now resting peacefully.

Way back - Peter is seen here sitting at the bar in this old (and rare) photo of the original front bar of the Freemasons Hotel

Molong Rocks Mini Festival WOW! What an event - the Molong Rocks Mini Festival held at the top pub (Telegraph) last Saturday arvo that continued into the evening. Thank you to everyone who came along for this inaugural (and hopefully to be repeated) event. Great music, great entertainment, cold drinks, fantastic venue (beer garden), and lots of friendly fun and laughter. A day to remember. The event was a fundraiser for those affected by the flood - both residents and businesses. Thank you to Beth and her team for organising the event, Molong Magpies RU club who provided the BBQ, and Les and Cheryl Birdsall of the Telegraph. Here are some of the 300 or so happy music lovers who joined in the fun of Molong Rocks!

QUICK CROSSWORD

REG’S BENCH A man was sitting quietly reading his paper when his wife walked up behind him and whacked him on the head with a magazine. 'What was that for?' he asked. 'That was for the piece of paper in your trouser pocket with the name Laura Lou written on it,' she replied. 'Two weeks ago when I went to the races. Laura Lou was the name of one of the horses I bet on. I bought you those flowers with the winnings.' he explained. 'Oh darling, I'm sorry; she said. 'I should have known there was a good explanation.' Three days later he was watching TV when she walked up and hit him in the head again, this time with a frying pan, which knocked him out cold. When he came to, he asked, 'What was that for?' 'Your horse phoned' My girlfriend left me for religious reasons. She worshipped money and I don’t have any.

Q: How does an Elephant get out of a tree? A: It sits on a leaf and waits till the Fall. I don’t normally tell dad jokes but when I do, he always laughs. Q: Who never minds being interrupted in the middle of a sentence? A: A convict. I went to my doctor to see why I had such an excessive fear of snakes. He said I have a reptile dysfunction. Q: What do you call a reindeer with no eyes? A: No eye deer. A girl in the office asked me if I had a date for Valentine’s Day. I told her it’s always February 14th, as far as I know. Q: What vegetable was forbidden on the ships of Arctic explorers? A: Leeks! An old man is struck by a car and brought to the hospital. A nurse enters his room and says, “Sir, are you comfortable?” The old man replies, “I make a nice living.” Q: What do you give to a pumpkin who’s trying to quit smoking? A: A pumpkin patch! I have a fear of overly designed buildings. It’s a complex complex complex

CRICKET ROUND 1 RESULTS Lyndhurst 5 for 182 defeated Cudal 10 for 163; Millthorpe 8 for 68 defeated Country 10 for 66; Canowindra 7 for 271 thrashed Molong Magpies 10 for 101. POINTS TABLE Canowindra 4, Lyndhurst 4, Millthorpe 4, Cudal 1; Country 1; Magpies 1 CANOWINDRA THRASH MAGPIES Losing Jamie and Sammy Austin plus Craig Carpenter for the season didn’t seem to bother Canowindra too much as they tossed aside an inept Magpies yesterday at Canowindra Oval. Batting first openers Nick and Brendan Traves attacked the Magpies bowlers from the start, hitting them to all parts of the oval. A 131 partnership ending in the 20th over when Brendan was dismissed for 46. After drinks Nick Traves continued his relentless assault finally being dismissed by Ben Brown for a magnificent 123. The young Canowindra team didn’t stop there piling more misery onto Magpies. Shaun Craven hit 52no along with Joe Croady 14no pushed the

home side’s total to a massive 6 for 271! Ben Brown bowled well for Magpies taking 3 for 55 despite a number of catches dropped off his bowling. Magpies dropped 11 catches in the Canowindra innings which pretty much sumed up their afternoon. As if Nick Traves hadn’t inflicted enough pain on Magpies he did the same with his bowling taking 2 for 3 from his 6 overs, including opener Ed Twiss for a duck. Three batsman contributed almost 75% of Magpies total of 103 with Mitch Brown top scoring with 25. Greg Pringle 25 and Chris Beatty 22. Magpies all out in the 30th over. Young Ethan Burling bowled well for Canowindra with the figures of 1 for 13 from 5 overs. Cormac McHenery finished off Magpies taking the last 2 wickets and the figures of 2 for 8 from 2 overs. A convincing 168 run victory to home side who no doubt send an ominous warning to the rest of the competition. Magpies although only having 9 players yesterday will need to regroup before hosting Millthorpe next Saturday.

Millthorpe d Country Today we tackled Molong Country at Hunter Caldwell Oval in the 1st of our 40 over fixtures in what turned out to be a very close game. Millthorpe loss the toss and were sent into the field and what a start we had with Crombie producing some magnificent fielding taking a sublime run out in the 1st over. Paddy Tree providing some heat early putting the pressure on Country with a tight opening spell of 0-10 off 4 overs followed by Captain Courageous, Brett Cooper keeping the pressure on with 0-12 off 3. Country fought back until James “rocket arm” Milner produced a lightening throw resulting in a runout. Stu Redfern came on from the river end with a bowling spell that could only be described as “juicy”. Extreme heat and bounce provided Stu with figures of 2/17 of 6. Tom Card was our leading wicket taker for the day with figures of 3/14 off 7 overs with the help of some tremendous catching from Yatesy despite the constant screaming from Tom “CATCH IT, CATCH IT!”. At the end of 24 overs we had bowled Molong Country out for 63. With a small total to chase in 40 overs, it turned out to be a very difficult run chase with a stand out, man of the match performance from Molong Country’s Spin King bowler, Mr Wilson finishing with 6/18 off 7 overs. An extraordinary spell that the Millthorpe batters found very difficult. Crombie opened the batting with a quick fire 29 who topped scored for the game.

Molong Sunday Golf Notes Sunday at the Royal Molong Golf Course saw several players turn up in the hope that the rain showers would stop. Unfortunately they didn’t stop so we went home. Since the Annual General Meeting was set for 1.30pm for pm and the rain had stopped some of us went out early to get nine holes in. We didn’t keep score which was just as well for Stubba who managed to lose at least one golf ball. Bell is managing to hit some great drives amongst some duffed shots. At the Annual General Meeting the committee remained much the same with Ged again at the helm. The committee has done a great job over the last twelve months for which the players are most grateful. After the meeting eight players played a two person ambrose skins event over six holes with Ged and the Ghost Walker winning one up. Golf will continue in much the same way as the previous twelve months with probably a eighteen hole event held once a month with a earlier tee off time. Then there will be the special events such as the Molong Open Tournament, veteran golf days and other tournaments in our area. A

calendar of events will be posted on the window of the clubhouse. For those who don’t know, Bro is a Motorcyclist/ noun (moh-ter-sy-klist)….this is a person who is willing to take a container of flammable liquid, place it on top of a hot engine and then put the whole thing between his legs. A brave man. My brother-in-law was telling me he got a new stick deodorant last week. The instructions said: remove cap and push up bottom. He said he can barely walk but when he passes wind the room smells lovely. He also reckons that he’s at that point in his life where the hottest text he gets on his mobile phone is “ your prescription is ready to be picked up “. Golf again on Sunday, 8.30am for 9am. Everyone, of course, is most welcome. I’ve heard that some people think they don’t play well enough to play on Sundays with us. Don’t worry about that because most of us, including me, don’t play well either. It’s all good fun, come and join us
