Town Talk It’s back ...Molong’s very own town talk column ... hopefully more peaceful than some of the drama on your social media!

Bank and Gidley Street shops, cafes, pubs and clubs enjoyed welcoming visitors to town again last weekend. Travelling from Orange, Sydney, the Blue Mts, the main comment at the Express office was “this is such a lovely town”. And, comments about “the people here are really friendly.”

Another wet weekend in Molong and district ... but in Bank and Gidley Streets - we welcomed visitors to town who happily braved the elements to try out cafes, pub and RSL menus, sipped good coffee and appeared to be happy in what a number described as a very pretty town with friendly people. That’s us... Welcome to Molong we say ... and thank your for visiting our lovely town. Talking about local rainfalls ... what is that saying? Give a kid water to play with? True, Particularly in Molong when heavy downpours soak the Rec. grounds and huge pools gather on the western side. Local kids love nothing more than grabbing their boogey boards (or makeshift ones) and heading to water fun. It’s one of those wonderful Molong traditions that keeps on living on. Thank you to Rec. neighbour, Edna Bleakley who is not only a community volunteer ‘gem’ - but also the unofficial ‘Fairy Grandmother’ to decades of local and district kids. Edna took the photos of ‘kids having fun’ - and handed out lollies (as she does).

The popular annual 8 Day Games Event organisers and competitors came to Molong last weekend to take part in the disc golf event at the Molong Golf Club grounds. It was gumboots and umbrella hats for some of the competitors who braved the wet course to win points towards overall scores. With spirits hardly dampened the group of competitors from all around NSW gathered after at the Freemasons Hotel where organisers tallied the day’s scores. Amongst the group was none other than one of Molong’s favourites - Punchy Jnr (son of Lenny Punch and Glenda of Molong). We love this ‘kid’.

(Above right) The Molong Disc Golf trail can be as tricky as the sand greens that have won over many a golfer. (Above) 8 Day Games Competitors testing their skills last weekend. Being a regular exerciser at the delightful Molong Golf Club grounds I notice the rapidly growing numbers of both recreational golfers and disc golfers. No wonder why ... this community is gifted with such a delightful space for sport, recreation, exercise ... blended with the caravan park and showground space. Imagine ... adding a walking/ exercise trail from town to the site ... and the development of an improved plan for the proposed housing land development adjoining this large piece of magical land. All sympathetic to community consultation decisions. A group of lady cyclists stopped over in Molong on Sunday afternoon on their way back to Sydney. Cycling the Central West cycling trail the ladies looked very fit after riding some 360 kms in something like 6 days. Stopping over in towns like Balimore etc - they certainly saw a lot of diverse country. We hope to see them return again to ‘friendly Molong’. See photo above right.

It would have to be be disheartening to be a member of the Cabonne Council gardening team when thoughtless ones disturb the beauty of their work. Sometime over the weekend - the Crepe Myrtles carefully planted in Wellington Street were vandalised. As one resident said - “just when they (the trees) were starting to look good”. Big kids, little kids, adults ...accident or deliberate? It’s sad to see when it happens (for all kinds of reasons).

(Right) In safe hands. Recently we were visited by the Fire and Rescue NSW BA Hazmat and Confined Space Truck where Molong’s finest were put through gruelling Confined Space training. Thumbs up to Fire and Rescue NSW for providing this essential training which will better equip our crew to face all confined space challenges. Training consisted of a theory component and a practical. Theory described the definitions, rules and regulations regarding identifying and entering confined spaces. We learnt to consider the dangers and to have a rescue plan at all times because helping others doesn’t mean much if the rescuers can’t help themselves. Practical meant we put all that theory into practice and climbed into the truck through the bottom to rescue John Doe (dummy). Big thanks to James Fletcher, the trainer.

MOLONG EXPRESS, Thursday 25 November 2021

Meet the candidates

Council Elections As promised The Molong Express is running a Cabonne Council election candidate feature to try and acquaint you with who is nominating for the Council election on December 4 . We asked candidates 3 Questions: (1) How do you describe Cabonne Country to visitors? (2) Just as a house or business needs to be built on a series of strong foundations in order to last forever e.g. to weather storms, to prevent cracking … to not fall over or fail – what would you say are the ‘strong foundations’ of Cabonne Country.

(3) (a): Renominating Candidates For those candidates who have renominated i.e. those who have served on Cabonne Council – why have you renominated? What do you believe you have to offer the people of Cabonne Country if you are elected for another term? How have you helped to make Cabonne Country a better place for people to live (lifestyle choices), sport, education/training opportunities/ childcare, be employed, run businesses (including the farming/grazing/agribiz sector), develop small or large business, business attraction, business relocation, play sport and be entertained.

Marlene NASH (1) To go on a road trip through rolling farmland, working orchards and vineyards. Stop off at the Cellar Doors and enjoy country hospitality. Then stop at all the beautiful towns and villages that define Cabonne shopping and eating in some of the most wonderful venues. (2) Cabonne has strong rural industry complimented by large businesses supplying employment opportunities. Our Real Estate is showing growth and is becoming a choice destination. Investment and projects are gathering momentum across the shire. Collaboration between neighbouring Councils can only strengthen and increase our viability as a Council. Great management and enthusiasm abounds within the Council with environmental opportunities sought and projects already planned. Our Communities are the heart and soul of Cabonne. (3) Renominating for a third term was easy as the Council is forging ahead. I would like the opportunity to continue in my role as Councillor to oversee current exciting projects . I stand for Cabonne as a Community Warrior who listens and advises where I can. I simply love the Shire and enjoy immensely visiting the Towns, Villages and Hamlets. Being involved in Community needs like Childcare Centres (asking Phil Donato for assistance with Cudal as well as Molong), assisting in the sporting arena upgrades, Yeoval and Cumnock pipeline a must in 21st Century. I have been very vocal in the quest for women and girls changerooms at our Recreation Ovals. Always interested and aware of the needs of Community for example the Flood Levee in Eugowra. I have served the Communities with conviction , honesty and loyalty and I will always support those who feel they do not have a voice.

Jenny WEAVER (1) Cabonne is one of the States most unique Councils, with many attractions. Towns and villages to visit, spectacular views and country rich in produce with food and wines being a trade mark which people are discovering every day, at the same time, communities making visitors welcome as only country people can do. (2) I have a great belief and commitment to Cabonne holistically and certainly a love for Canowindra and District, I believe that Cabonne would be able to support and contribute to the infrastructure of the towns and villages and continue future development through its Strategic Plan and Town Master Plans, which the community has contributed too. Giving the community the opportunity to direct the future development of the Shire (3) I support the sustainability of Cabonne Council through Tourism and Development, while it maintains this focus, Council has the resources that will ensure this advancement encompasses the wider community, by always remaining focused on the long term benefits to the residents in the Towns and Villages. Council has obtained Grants and with Council’s input have achieved the visions and desires of our many communities, inclusive of Town and Village Masterplans, improvements to sporting facilities, support of our

(3) (b) Nominating for the 1st time Candidates For those who have nominated for the first time – What do you believe you can offer the residents of Cabonne Country (that you believe will add to, be better than the former council team has achieved) that will improve their lives (lifestyle choices), sport, education/ training opportunities/childcare, be employed, run businesses (including farming/grazing/agribiz sector), develop small or large business, business attraction, business relocation, play sport and be entertained.

Showgrounds and importantly future developments in our residents Health Facilities. I also understand that with over 2,000 km of roads in Cabonne, they remain a large focus and one of the community’s priorities I support promoting the continued growth of all attractions across the Council area, inclusive of Canowindra’s Age of Fishes Museum and Balloon Challenge, Eugowra’s Street Murals, Manildra’s Amusu Theatre, Yeoval’s Banjo Paterson Festival and many other attractions.

Peter BATTEN

Q1 The Cabonne Local Government Area in the heart of Wiradjuri Country is a vibrant LGA with a very bright future with beautiful towns and villages, award winning vineyards and wineries, National Parks and abundant employment opportunities in mining, agriculture and agrifood processing and the service industries. Q2 The future of Cabonne is built on the skills and knowledge of its people to use and manage the abundant resources of the area sustainably. Q3 I was elected to Council for the first time in 2017 on a platform of improving our towns and villages through beautification projects, improving sporting facilities and early education facilities, supporting the infrastructure team to keep Cabonne roads as some of the best in regional Australia, growing renewable energy, facilitating strong alliances between councils and across the three tiers of government. I firmly believe that the current Council has delivered effectively on these commitments and has worked with the General Manager and senior staff of Cabonne Council to effectively manage the resources of Council. Cabonne Council manages depreciable assets of approximately $800 million and an annual budget of between $45 and $50 million. The scale of these public assets and budget requires people with considerable business experience and acumen to ensure that they are managed effectively and efficiently. I believe I have the skills, knowledge and experience to contribute to the team that provides the governance to manage these resources on behalf of the residents and ratepayers of Cabonne. One need only travel around Cabonne Country to observe the outcomes of the efforts of the staff and current council with: - improved sporting facilities in Canowindra, Cargo, Cudal, Cumnock, Manildra, Molong and Mullion Creek; - improved halls in Baldry, Manildra, Mullion Creek and Yeoval; - improved early learning centres in Cudal, Cumnock and Molong; - beautification of our towns and villages with new play equipment for children, beautified streets with gardens and trees; - Cabonne's road network one of the best in regional NSW despite the challenges of the continuing rain in 2021; - improved water supplies for Cumnock, Molong and Yeoval; and - completion of the levy in Eugowra to protect the town from the regular flooding that it has experienced in the past. These outcomes have been achieved through strong engagement between Cabonne Council and the State and Federal Governments as many of the projects are jointly funded by Council and one or both of the other tiers of government.

The Candidates (Ballot paper order) NASH Marlene (Manildra WEAVER Jenny (Canowindra) BATTEN Peter (Garra) OLDHAM Libby (Molong) O'RYAN Kathryn (Canowindra) MULLINS Paul (Molong) WALKER Kevin (Canowindra) PEARSON Aaron (Molong) RAWSON Andrew (Nashdale) PULL Andrew (Canowindra) BEATTY Kevin (Molong) JONES Jamie (Molong) TREAVORS Gregory (Cudal)

I intend to continue the work of the current Council if re-elected on 4 December. In the next term of Council I will be working as part of the team of Councillors and senior staff to: - build the Cabonne Community Centre in Molong in 2022; - reseal damaged sections of the sealed road network and gravel resheet those gravel roads requiring resheeting; - develop a Net Zero 2050 Strategy for Cabonne Council with realistic measurable milestones; and - implement the Renewable Energy Action Plan for Cabonne Council which has the potential to save millions of dollars in energy costs for Cabonne ratepayers.

Libby OLDHAM

(1) Cabonne Country is the Tuscany of the Central West. With rolling hills, quaint villages, wine and food trails, culinary festivals and museums that tell tales of pioneering days, a great place to live and work and a wonderful place to visit. (2) The people of Cabonne are passionate about their thriving communities, just remember the fight against amalgamation. The communities are supportive and welcoming, embracing new comers with resect and sharing their love of the place they call home providing a strong foundation for the future. (3) There are many projects started I would like to see through to completion. The Community Centre in which I have been involved to see it operating bringing art exhibitions, theatre and the new state of the art library. To see the Cabonne Acquisitive Art prize I introduced to Cabonne (with the unanimous support of my fellow Councillors) continue to prosper. To work with DAROO Business Awards to keep promoting local business. To continue to represent some of the smaller communities. Cabonne is a large shire and over the past 4 years I have travelled hundreds of kilometers visiting our communities bringing their voice and needs to Council attention and solution. There are a large number of projects around the shire to carry to completion, these are not an individual accomplishment but the result of a group of Councillors working together for the betterment of Cabonne.

Kathryn O'RYAN

(1) Cabonne Country is surprising; comprising 11 historic villages and known as “Australia’s Food Basket”, it is a richly diverse agricultural area located in stunning landscapes. The history of the area is fascinating and much of it is told in the villages; Devonian fish fossils, sacred sites, early settlers, the gold rush and bush rangers. (2) Cabonne is primarily agricultural, and this is the underlying strength of the area. The quality of the soils, availability of water and good farming practices are the key components to the diverse, high-quality goods produced; the grain, lucerne, livestock, grapes, fruit and vegetables. This, combined with the resilient, caring, creative, ambitious and resourceful communities and local businesses of Cabonne, are the strong foundations of Cabonne Country. (3) If elected to Cabonne Council, there are three things I hope to offer residents: a strong voice, transparency of decision-making, and experience as a long-term resident. Advocating for the needs of people who may not otherwise be heard is a particular passion of mine. (Continued next page)

Council Elections Kathryn O'RYAN

(Continued from p5) I am a good communicator, with the ability to listen to different points of view and if needed, offer alternative perspectives. I consider transparent decision-making to be crucial. I hope that through good communication I can assist in providing information to residents that is both accessible and easy to understand, and in this way I hope to play a role in tackling the problems that the residents of Cabonne most care about. Finally, my experience as a small business owner has made me aware of the struggles many people face in establishing and maintaining a business in the area, and my experience as a long-term resident means I am aware that while much of what we need as communities is available, the condition of our roads, poor internet and mobile coverage can make accessing services very difficult.

Paul MULLINS

(1) The Wiradjuri are the traditional owners of Cabonne Country - a region of uniqueness and diversity. The geographical location is amazing - as are the natural treasures of the landscape that extends across the towns and villages of Cabonne Country. I believe there are a host of opportunities still to be identified in this region that can be valueadded to - to what exists today. Agribiz, tourism, retail, hospitality, education, childcare, healthcare, the arts, entertainment, sport ... building, trades etc to name a few. The people of Cabonne Country - the young and senior, families, students, farmers and graziers, health workers, school teachers, business operators - form the base of Cabonne Region. The people of this region are our true base. They are wonderful. I have found that it speaks for itself - living up to the expectations described online as a unique, friendly combination of towns, people, farms, agriculture, wineries, and interesting history to explore. We are so lucky to live in this region. (2) As part of my work reporting for the Molong Express and as a current councillor I attended almost every Council meeting over the past 19 years. At close quarters I have seen and appreciated the needs of Cabonne citizens across all aspects of their lives – from health, aged care, recreation and business, right through to the person looking to get a new shed approved. I appreciate Council’s purpose, how it works and the need to make decisions in a spirit of co-operation - always with an eye for what is best for the whole Shire as well as individual residents. Councillors make a real contribution to the well-being of Cabonne. I re-established the Molong Floodplain Committee after years of neglect - it is making real progress on addressing longstanding flood mitigation issues. I will serve you well. (3) I have a real love of Cabonne - its people, farms, towns and villages. My role at the Express has put me closely in touch with countless local associations, organisations and citizens themselves. They have shared their hopes and aspirations - but importantly they have given me a great appreciation of what they like about our region, why they live here, what needs changing - and what should stay the same. I bring a long career background in government, at a senior level in roles requiring leadership, representation, negotiation, problem solving, strong management skills. While a skilled, intelligent and motivated council is needed to get us through the challenges to come, the nitty gritty that affects your daily lives relies on good council administration. As a councillor I participated in a wide ranging review of the council’s management and workforce - these are now having their effect with a range of improvements and planning initiatives across the shire - including much community consultation. My priorities are your priorities. We are in good shape but we need to preserve what is good about Cabonne, and strive to improve. We need to support our rural communities and farmers as well as assist and promote town developments that will bring growth and provide jobs for our kids. I sometimes think the Council doesn’t move fast enough on some things and will strive to provide the resources to “get on with it”.

6 MOLONG EXPRESS, Thursday 25 November 2021

Meet the candidates

I am independant and apolitical. I will communicate and listen to you and represent you to my best.

Kevin WALKER

Life long resident of Canowindra & Cowra; Farming and retail experience; Councillor Cabonne from 2008; Delegate to Central Tablelands Water, Deputy Chairman; Delegate to various organisations. Cabonne Council can look forward with great confidence to carry on the growth of Cabonne Country with all projects ready and underway and planned. If elected my priority would be Cumnock/Yeoval pipeline ; Retirement accommodation for our seniors; Cemetery improvements; Advocate for Cranky Rock Dam on the Belabula river for flood mitigation downstream and further; Maintain and improve Cabonne’s extensive road network. There are other exciting projects planned for Cabonne and to become a reality will be subject to funding from State and Federal authorities with Cabonne’s involvement. Utilise Orange 360 in promotion of tourism in Cabonne and be part of the development of regional tourism for the benefit for all villages and towns in Cabonne Important to provide sustainable local government to Cabonne communities thru consultation and sound financial management and accountability. We need to look at opportunities to network with local government areas to create savings for all concerned. My experience in Local Government as a councillor has given me a deep understanding of government process which has given me knowledge who to approach for a favourable outcome. I enjoy representing and advocating for the communities. If elected I would be working with our communities

Aaron PEARSON (1) To visitors, I describe Cabonne Country as a jewel in the crown of the Central West for its unique, friendly, charming, and peaceful atmosphere. People are warm and welcoming to visitors and newcomers to the area, always happy to help in making a visitor’s stay an enjoyable and memorable one. (2) One of the strongest foundations that keep Cabonne standing in my view is the strong sense of community spirit that runs right throughout the shire. In times of uncertainty, the Cabonne community has really banded together, the fight against the state government’s plans for the forced amalgamation of Cabonne with Orange is but one example. This community spirit makes us unbeatable and is one of our strongest foundations of which we can weather any storm. (3) In terms of bettering the lives of Cabonne residents, firstly I feel there needs to be a greater focus on the smaller villages of the shire as well as the large ones in terms of provision and dispensation of council services such as infrastructure. As for education and training, I believe that we need a greater focus on the land. One of Cabonne’s biggest industries is agriculture and there would be both opportunities and benefit for students to train for a career in agriculture/agribiz. I would fully support the attraction of new business to the shire be it a completely new business or one that is relocating as it boosts our local economy and provides more local jobs. I would encourage advertising campaigns aimed at attracting businesses, sporting events, and visitors pitching Cabonne as a great place to work rest and play.

Andrew RAWSON

(1) Beautiful landscapes, rich agricultural lands and the food and wine hub of NSW. We have the best combination of cooler climate, effective rainfall and good soils in the State. Coupled with significant natural and cultural history, this region is an attractive place to live, visit and experience all four seasons! (2) Cabonne’s natural assets – central NSW location, soils, climate, people and heritage are our foundation.

There is a strong sense of community here, built on a long history of looking after each other in good times and bad. We are proud of what we produce. There are challenges ahead with changing climates and competing demands, but Cabonne is in a sound position to adapt and make the best of the challenges. (3) I offer a fresh perspective and a lot of experience to this role. I have over 35 years experience in science and policy involving soil and land management, climate change and agricultural sustainability. I spent 17 years working for State Government land management agencies, so I understand how they function. As a university academic I have taught many hundreds of young land managers about sustainability. As the 4th generation of a Central West family I feel I have a good sense of what this region needs for ensuring future prosperity. Council has many worthwhile strategic Plans, but very little money to implement them. The next steps for Council involve engaging directly with State and Federal Governments to fund much of our needed infrastructure, especially fixing our crumbling roads. I feel my experience will help facilitate that connection and provide a better perspective on dealing with the challenges ahead.

Kevin BEATTY (1) If you want the very best country life with a little bit of everything. Cabonne is for you. Very welcoming, friendly, great medical facilities, early child care, primary and secondary schools, industry, sporting and recreational facilities, retail and unique boutique shops. It is a great place to raise a family, work, to retire or simply enjoy life. Cabonne, the best place to live. (2) The strongest and most important foundation that Cabonne Country has is it’s people. People make up our villages, our localities and our rural areas. All of which come together to make up a wonderful resilient community. On so many occasions, I have seen this community come together in good times and especially in bad times, to help one another. Keeping this foundation strong by ensuring that the community has all their needs, will ensure that the foundations of Cabonne stay rock solid and strong into the future. (3) I have nominated to stand for Council once again as I enjoy working with the community. I enjoy the challenge of assisting with problems and resolving issues as best that I can. I am keen to continue the work done by the previous Council term and to continue to make improvements across the Cabonne LGA. In the previous Council term, I led a team that has focused on delivering outcomes to the entire Cabonne Region. The focus has been on economic benefit to ensure that Cabonne is sustainable into the future. I led a team that has delivered multiple projects making Cabonne a better place to live. At the start of the Council term we came off a previous focus of survival. At the end of the Council term, with a lot of great work, we now have a focus to thrive. I am proud of Cabonne and advocate to political leaders putting Cabonne on the map.

Jamie JONES (1) I describe Cabonne as ‘God’s Country’, because I believe there is no better place to raise a family, invest and grow old. The people, our villages as well as the agricultural produce and natural landscape is why I remain passionate and dedicated to serving our community. (2) Now more than ever, it’s important that Cabonne has a strong and stable Council that will facilitate the future growth and prosperity of the area. (Continued next page)

Council Elections Meet the candidates

(Continued from page 6)) I have been involved in obtaining much needed upgrades to community facilities right across Cabonne for current and future residents, but there is still a lot of work to do, and of course all this must be done while Council lives within its means to ensure we remain financially sustainable. (3) As the current Deputy Mayor, some of the projects that I am proud to have been involved in, include: • Funding for upgraded sporting facilities • New playground at the Rec • Support for the expansion of the Preschool and funding for FDC • Refurbishment of the Bank Street toilets • Support for local organisations I have experience working within Government, which has been invaluable when partnering with the State and Federal Government to deliver projects. I am a volunteer firefighter with the Rural Fire Service, the previous President of the Molong RSL Club and was a member of Cabonne’s ANTY Committee. My priorities are: • Upgrades and maintenance of Council’s vast road network, • Village beautification and maintenance including new footpaths • Upgrades to the Molong Caravan Park • Lobbying for funding for projects listed in the Molong masterplans. I have given 100% to being a Councillor and if reelected, I will be just as motivated and committed.

Gregory TREAVORS

(1) Cabonne Country is a unique and diverse untapped region to the people of New South Wales. Its major assets are the agricultural landscape, the

numerous tourist destinations i n c l u d i n g w i n e r i e s , orchards, cafes, art galleries and museums in our historical two major towns and eleven villages. (2) The strong foundation of the Cabonne Country is the strength of the people within the community. The unity and support of the people drawing together are the driving force to enable the strengthening of the region to push forward and be sustainable into the future. (3) When I first stood for election in 2012, I made a promise: “If I am successful in gaining a position on Council I can promise that I have no hidden agenda in serving. I will not make any promises that I cannot keep or fulfill. All I will offer is a listening ear and a voice once again for the ratepayers. I will avail myself to take all requests made to me to the Council when called upon.” I’ve kept that front and centre and I’m proud that we as a Council team achieved many things in this time. If I am returned as a councilor I will keep the focus on building better roads and maintaining our infrastructure and services. We need to work harder on improving aged and child care services over the next term. Furthermore, I have a vision of promoting the area of Cabonne and to see Cabonne become more secure into the future.

Congratulations to the winners of the 2021 Cabonne Photo Competition

A word from the organisers and judges. “We have seen some incredible views of Cabonne through your eyes and now proudly announce the winners.” Photo Competition Winner Jane Atkinson’s ‘Rainbow over Canola’. Jane’s impressive photograph received 161 votes. Express comment. Jane’s photo of this Cabonne Canola paddock demonstrates her choice of landscape design. A landscape scene that could have been taken at various angles with the rainbow and sky in the background - or as the highligh of the photo. Instead, a creative eye is drawn to the wider landscape and the colours which highlights each other. Jane’s work is more than a photograph. Take a look deeper and discover the passion this clever woman has been able to convey to the judging table! Well done to Jane Atkinson on ‘Rainbow over Canola’.

Photo Competition - Junior Section Winner Kayla Price ‘Smoky Sunset in Cargo’ received 84 votes! Express comment. Kayla’s tree silhouette cleverly leads one’s eye to the background - the sky and far away landscape. The small piece of bark (on the right of the tree) further captures one’s eye to bring prominence to the lower skyscape and then to the more distant landscape. If one was to paint this scene, the colours of the background would require a palette of many colours to create the pinks, mauves, blues, deep greens etc. Like Jane Atkinson’s work above ... Kayla’s photography brings forth a scene of natural beauty ... of how nature itself is the ‘true artist’. For a photographer, like Kayla to be able to capture the ‘gift of art of nature’ is a truly special gift. Well done to Kayla Price on ‘Smoky Sunset in Cargo’.

Magazine Baby Shower for Chase & ?

Danielle Ball and Drew Wilson welcomed their little boy, Chase, into the world some 3 months ago. U n f o r t u n a t e l y, Danielle’s family and friends were unable to hold a Baby Shower before Chase’s birth due to COVID. However, the decision was made ... 6 November 2021 at the Molong Freemason’s Hotel for the long awaited Baby Shower. “My sister Teagan Ball travelled from Nowra with her partner Dan and little boy Jackson (3) to be with us” said Danielle. So, in true Ball/Bennett family style the decision was made to surprise Teagan by sharing the Baby Shower with her. Teagan is expecting her new baby, a little girl, in January. Kim, Kelly and the team at the Freemasons Hotel in Bank Street came together with the girls’ mum, Merilyn Ball and sister, Sharni Duncan to organise the celebration. Decorated in blue and pink guests were entertained with a delicious afternoon tea, gift opening, and two decorated cakes ... one in blue ... one in pink with real cowboy boots of miniature size for the two cousins to eventually wear together.

December in your garden ... Mulch, mulch, mulch

A weekly column by Rozzi and contributors

Although this is a different year, weatherwise (and otherwise!) with higher rainfalls and it seems like less sunny days - December is the time homegardeners set about mulching their gardens. I’ll be adding mushroom compost to my home-garden ‘recipe’. (Mushroom compost is available locally from Dusty at Molong ReadyMixed Concrete in Betts Street or in small quantities from Steve and his team at H. Hardware in Bank Street - see their phone numbers etc in the Express trades and services area). Mushroom Compost is one of the best organic mulches - weed free, slightly alkaline material specially prepared for commercial mushroogrowing and discarded after use. Other local industries may have waste products that will make good mulch - including grape marc (from wineries), cottonseed by-products (from cotton mills). Check them out! With the (hopefully) hot summer months around the corner - mulching helps gardens to survive by placing a sort of thermal blanket over the plant roots to keep them cool and to reduce the evaporation from the surface of the soil. Mulching also suppresses the growth of weeds, which compete with plants for the moisture. Whatever gardeners decide to use - it is best to spread mulch 5-15cm thick but needs to be kept back 3-4cm from the stems or trunks of plants. Water garden beds thoroughly before and after mulching. Mulches may be inorganic or organic. An example of an inorganic mulch is gravel or coarse sand. Whilst these are effective coolers they do

not value-add to the soil. Organic mulches such as lawn clippings, rot down and provide beneficial humus. To offset the nitrogen take up by organic mulches as they decompose, a couple of matchboxfuls of sulphate of ammonia should be dissolved in water for sprinkling around (not over) plants about once a year, or whenever you notice that leaves are yellowing. Organic mulches include - weeds (preferably with no seedheads), twigs and leaves. straw (weedless), hay (likely to produce weeds, but easily pulled), lawn clippings (preferably dried for a day or two first), seaweed, animal manure. Water effectively: It doesn’t matter where you live - water is a precious commodity so use it as efficiently as possible by Water in the early morning or during the evening to minimise evaportation. Water for long enough to allow moisture to penetratre below root level. Install tap-timers to turn the water on and off for you. Investigate an automatic dripper or sprinkler system.

Water indoor and outoor container plants deep down by dunking occasionally in a bucket or trough of water (remove containers when bubbles stop rising). More December Garden Hints Next Week. In the meantime ... “successful planting brings together the soil, the sun, water, your heart and hands wanting to create and achieve.” Source: ‘Australian Gardening Calendar’ “what to do in your garden each month” Available at the Molong Express.

View from the Hill

Michelle Grattan

Professorial Fellow, University of Canberra

With the opposition and other critics homing in on the issues of his character and integrity, Scott Morrison on Monday played right into their hands. It was question time on the first day of parliament’s final sitting fortnight for the year (and incidentally, the last day the muchrespected Tony Smith would be in the Speaker’s chair). The issue was an old one, that had been canvassed before, giving all the more reason why the prime minister should have been careful with his words. Labor MP Fiona Phillips, from the NSW marginal seat of Gilmore (which the government hopes to reclaim) asked Morrison why, when her electorate was burning in the bushfires of 2019, his office told journalists he wasn’t on holiday in Hawaii. Morrison replied that he’d texted Anthony Albanese “from the plane when I was going on that leave, and told him where I was going and he was fully aware of where I was travelling with my family”. Half of this was untrue, as Albanese knew full well. Morrison had not said “where” he was going at all. There were some angry exchanges across the table. After question time, Albanese in a personal explanation said Morrison had not indicated his destination in the text. Morrison then made his looseness-with-the-truth worse, redefining the meaning of “where”. “Where I was going was on leave, Mr Speaker, and that was the important thing I sent to the leader of the opposition. […] I told him I was taking leave.” But soon after, Morrison or his advisers realised the need to get the carpet sweeper out. The PM made another intervention. In a rare admission, he told the House: “I wish to add to an answer. I want to confirm what the leader of the opposition said, that in that text I did not tell him the destination of where I was going on leave with my family. “I simply communicated to him that I was taking leave.

Scott Morrison trips on a truth test

“When I was referring to, ‘He knew where I was going and was fully aware I was travelling with my family,’ what I meant was that we were going on leave together. “I know I didn’t tell him where we were going because, Mr Speaker, that is a private matter where members take leave, and I know I didn’t tell him the destination – nor would I and nor would he expect me to have told him where he [sic] was going. “I simply confirmed to him that I was taking leave with my family and he was aware of that at that time.” This is extraordinary. First the PM says he told Albanese “where” he was going and emphasised the point. Then, pushed onto the back foot, he admits he didn’t tell him that and says neither of them would have expected him to do so. It was a spectacular example of Morrison’s penchant to slip and slide around things, but one that, given the written evidence and his own logic, was always going to end badly. This wasn’t the only untidiness of the day. In the Senate, five government senators crossed the floor to support Pauline Hanson’s bill to ban discrimination against the unvaccinated. The bill covered federal, state and territory government and the private sector. Those Coalition senators who voted for the bill were two former ministers, Matt Canavan and Concetta Fierravanti-Wells, as well as Alex Antic, Gerard Rennick and Sam McMahon. Ironically Hanson could not vote for her own bill, defeated 5-44, because she was participating in

parliament remotely, which doesn’t permit casting a vote. She had to confine herself to a fiery speech, that was matched by an opposing one from another crossbencher, Jacqui Lambie, who launched a ferocious attack on One Nation. Hanson said: “State governments are relishing this extraordinary power to command and control […] “The Victorian government relishes this power so much they’re trying to permanently enshrine it in law, giving the premier unprecedented authority to act like a dictator – and still the prime minister has done nothing to stop this discrimination.” But Lambie said: “If you want to champion against discrimination, you don’t want One Nation”. “One Nation is not a fighter against discrimination. One Nation seeks to profit from it. It’s just a fundraising exercise for them and that’s all this is.” Morrison had facilitated the bill being considered in an attempt to mollify Hanson, who is opposing government legislation generally over the vaccine mandate issue. Despite this gesture, she is maintaining her position. Senators Rennick and Antic are withholding their votes from the government over the same issue, making the outlook in the Senate chaotic for this fortnight. On Tuesday the Coalition party room will get the government’s religious discrimination legislation. (theconversation.com.au)

Taskforce commences consultation on regional bank branch closures

The Morrison Government is seeking to maintain banking services where bank branches have closed in the regions through the Regional Banking Taskforce. Regional Banking Taskforce cochairs – The Assistant Treasurer, Minister for Housing and Minister for Homelessness Social and Community Housing, the Hon. Michael Sukkar, and Senator Perin Davey – today announced the start of public consultation by the Taskforce. Australians can contribute their insights into regional bank branch closures by making submissions to the Taskforce over the coming weeks and are encouraged to do so. Insights from the submissions will help the Taskforce better understand the impacts of branch closures and how Australians are accessing banking services. They will also help improve banking services and accessibility where branches have closed. These submissions will build on the discussions held between senior representatives of banks and other

key stakeholders at the Taskforce’s first meeting on 9 November in Sydney. The Taskforce will continue exploring potential solutions for maintaining and improving banking services and accessibility with meetings scheduled for December 2021 and January 2022. More information about the Taskforce is available here and the issues paper is available here. Submissions are invited by email to regionalbanking@treasury. gov.au or by mail to: Secretariat, Regional Banking Taskforce, Financial System Division, The Treasury, Langton Crescent, Parkes ACT 2600. The consultation process will open for four weeks with submissions closing 18 December 2021. The Regional Banking Taskforce and the Liberal-National Government’s ongoing support for rural and regional communities is part of our economic plan to support the recovery and keep Australians together.

REG’S BENCH A man is driving along a highway and sees a rabbit jump out across the middle of the road. He swerves to avoid hitting it, But unfortunately the rabbit jumps right in front of the car. The driver, a sensitive man as well as an animal lover, pulls over and gets out to see what has become of the rabbit. Much to his dismay, the rabbit is dead. The driver feels so awful that he begins to cry. A beautiful blonde woman driving down the highway sees a man crying on the side of the road and pulls over. She steps out of her car and asks the man what's wrong. 'I feel terrible,’! he explains, 'I accidentally hit this rabbit and killed it.' The blonde says, 'Don't worry.' She runs to her car and pulls out a spray can. She walks over to the limp, dead rabbit, bends down and sprays the contents onto the rabbit. The rabbit jumps up, waves its paw at the two of them and hops off down the road. Ten feet away the rabbit stops, turns around and waves again, he hops down the road another 10 feet, turns and waves, hops another ten feet, turns and waves, and repeats this again and again and again, until he hops out of sight. The man is astonished. He runs over to the woman and demands, 'What is in that can? What did you spray on that rabbit?' The woman turns the can around so that the man can read the label. It says.. (Are you ready for this?) (Are you sure?) (This is bad!) (OK, here it is) It says, 'Hair Spray - Restores life to dead hair, and adds permanent wave'. A guy sits down in a diner and asks for a bowl of hot chili… The waitress says, “Sorry, but the guy next to you got the last bowl”. He looks over and sees that the guy’s finished his meal, but the bowl of chili is still full. He asks, “Are you going to eat that chili?” The other guy says, “No. Help yourself”. He slides the bowl of chili over and starts to eat. When he gets about half way down, his spoon hits something. He looks down, sees a dead mouse, and immediately vomits all the chili back into WORD SEARCH

the bowl. The other guy says, “Yeah, that’s about as far as I got, too”. Lucille decided to give herself a big treat for her 70th birthday by staying overnight in a really nice hotel.. When she checked out the next morning, the desk clerk handed her a bill for $250.00. She demanded to know why the charge was so high "I agree it's a nice hotel, but the rooms aren't worth $250..00 for just an overnight stay - I didn't even have breakfast!" The clerk told her that $250.00 is the 'standard rate,' and breakfast had been included had she wanted it. She insisted on speaking to the Manager. The Manager appeared and, forewarned by the desk clerk, announced: "This hotel has an Olympic-sized pool and a huge conference center which are available for use." "But I didn't use them." ''Well, they are here, and you could have." He went on to explain that she could also have seen one of the in-hotel shows for which they were so famous. "We have the best entertainers from the world over performing here." "But I didn't go to any of those shows.." "Well, we have them, and you could have." No matter what amenity the Manager mentioned, she replied, "But I didn't use it!" and the Manager countered with his standard response. After several minutes discussion, and with the Manager still unmoved, she decided to pay, wrote a check and gave it to him. The Manager was surprised when he looked at the check. "But Madam, this check is for only $50.00 "That's correct I charged you $200.00 for sleeping with me." "But I didn't!" "Well, too bad, I was here, and you could have." My mate Mick took 2 stuffed dogs to the Antiques Roadshow. "Ooh!" said the presenter, "This is a very rare set, produced by the celebrated Johns Brothers taxidermists who operated in London at the turn of last century. Do you have any idea what they would fetch if they were in good condition?" "...Sticks!" Mick replied...

Our Christmas party will be held at the Club on Monday 13 December commencing 6pm. All lady members are invited to attend, list is on the board for attendances and dish they will be bringing. Please let Janelle if you want to play ASAP.

It was also moved that if Fees are not paid by end of July yearly then Sydney will be advised and the player will be deregistered. A discussion was held regarding the colour of our bottoms. A request was made to see if we could be same colour as Mens, as it is getting very difficult to get the Cornflower Blue. Yvonne is looking into exactly what our Registered colour is. Sydney has advised that we do not have a registered colour with them and advised us to go to District to find out. Will advise as soon as I find out Next General Meeting 2nd Monday in april 2022. Hope to see you at Pairs competition and Christmas party.

We had 8 regular players on Saturday and 2 guests from Sydney who really enjoyed their game. Hopefully we will be able to play again this Saturday 27th starting at 3.00pm. On the 11th we plan to have a BBQ after our game so all are welcome to come including partners. I will need to know numbers beforehand so that I can get the meat, and if members could bring along a salad or some slice.

Sunday Golf Firstly it was disappointing to see last week that some “dupek “ (it’s a Polish word) had gone and done burnouts on the eighteenth fairway. We have this wonderful facility for people to enjoy for golf, disc golf, walking, horse riding and other social activities and some pea brain has to cause damage. I hope whoever has a run of bad karma. Here are the names of some fine people from Molong’s past. Bullet Dean, Jim Cooper, Bob Mann and Les Thomas. What have these fine people got to do with this week’s golf notes? The grandsons of the above and a couple of their mates played twilight golf on Friday and by the sounds of laughter from the course they seemed to have a great time. Jye was the winner with Dylan and Lewis coming second. Woody was probably laughing too much to win. Sunday saw only four players front for golf at Royal Molong. The weather deterred others from joining in. No winner was declared but apparently Stubba and Justin got wet feet from

Gerard

straying off the fairway with Bro informing Stubba to try and emulate his (Bro’s) golf shots to stay on course. Bell is mostly on course anyway so it didn’t affect her. I don’t think the following was anyone local when on a Sunday afternoon a man staggered into the hospital emergency room with two black eyes and a five iron wrapped around his throat. What happened he was asked. “ Well, I was having a game of golf with my wife when on the last hole she sliced her tee shot into the cow paddock and wouldn’t go and look for it. While I was looking for her ball I noticed one of the cows had something white in it’s tail. I quietly walked over for a closer look and sure enough there was my wife’s ball stuck in the cow’s butt. That’s when I made my mistake. I pointed to the cow’s posterior and yelled to my wife, ‘Hey, this looks like yours!’” Twilight golf on Friday, 5pm for 5.30pm and I think Wilson might be celebrating a birthday at this event. Golf on Sunday, 8.30am for 9am. Everyone welcome at both events.
