One year on: Where are we at?

Above: The morning after. It would be easy to simply shrug our shoulders and say "it will happen again" but for those living and rebuilding from the nightmare of November 13/14 2022 that comment standing alone, and the community acceptance of - is not reality in what should be recognised by a 'smart' community as the effects of a changing climate. Question is: Do we simply accept what some will say was a 100,150,or a 200 year event? OR, as an intelligent community do we work 'smarter' and accept that a changing climate might well bring a series of regular follow up events of the depth, size and volume that swept through Molong only 12 months ago? Acceptance of the external environmental challenges of today is not going to go away. But there is a chance to live with this knowledge, be prepared and source the latest sciences and technological advancements, design and build a safer and better informed future. Let us not go down in the town's history books as the generation who sacrificed this beautiful town by failing to learn.

Flood recovery matched to total $100 million

Last week the Express was pleased to announce the NSW Government financial support of $50m to support flood recovery across Central West NSW. This week, the Express is even more pleased to report that the Federal Government has now matched the NSW Government initiative with an additional $50 million package for flood recovery funding for the NSW Central West. This brings the total commitment

from the state and commonwealth governments to $100 million. Andrew Gee - Federal Member for Calare has continued the pressure on government to roll-out the fundingas soon as possible. On the eve of the first anniversary of the storm and flood event, Mr Gee asked the Prime Minister for assurances the funding would be made available to residents on the ground and "on the double". The PM gave unequivocal assurance that there would be no delay in getting

the funding out the door. In his response the Prime Minister said: “I certainly will give the community [the Central West], through the Member for Calare, that assurance.” The Prime Minister then acknowledged Mr Gee’s advocacy for disaster-hit areas of the Central West. “I thank him for the representations he’s made on behalf of that community.” P.4

A message from Paul and Rozzi

Welcome to the Molong Express as we return to our once a week, every Thursday issue. We have certainly got our roller skates on as we head through November and December to end the 2023 year. What a year! Paul and I are so thankful to have the support and wonderful skills of Pen. and Rachel who have hopped in to put the Express together. Phil (Cabonne Rides) with the help of Dolittle Farm, in transporting the Express from our Sydney based publishers to Molong. Cabonne Rides has also taken over the delivery of the Express to Manildra and Cudal with our own team delivering to Cumnock. Thank you also to our distributor in Orange who delivers to local newsagencies. To Lynn Townsend who sends our 'mail out' copies and most of all to Matt, Kaylene and the Molong Newsagency team who deliver the Express to thankful residents on Thursday mornings. What a team! What a year! What a community. Paul and I are so thankful to live in this wonderful community and district. Right across our readership area Molong, Manildra, Cumnock, Cudal, Orange people have phoned us, sent messages, visited, came and checked on us and delivered home cooked meals. The offers of volunteer help to keep the Express going during Paul's illness and after the flood has proven the strength of this and the wider Cabonne and Orange communities. The good news is that Paul will be back home in the 'POD' with us (our little black dog, R2) by the end of this week. We can hardly wait to have our man home again - after what has been a 'massive' 12 months. Meanwhile, the Express continues to question and seek answers from the authorities about safeguarding Molong/Cabonne residents from future floods. Time for new initiatives, time to address the issues, time to learn, time to accept, time for change. Reality is knocking on our doors. Respectively yours ... Rozzi

Cumnock General Store gets fresh new look

Last week whilst delivering the Express to the Cumnock General Store, I came across new signage heralding the changing of the guard, so to speak. When offered for sale by owner/operators Paula and Peg Rudd, the community of Cumnock took notice and decided to take on the business as a collective. After careful research on regulations and protocol to formalise a community arrangement to own and operate the local post office, newsagency, food, and all and sundry - a community volunteer group set about realising a dream to keep their one-and-only store, and an important community meeting place, operational. It’s was a smart move by the locals involved - challenging no doubt - but achievable. Last weekend, the Express heard about the number of utes, 4WD’s, and other vehicles parked in the main street filled with incredible volunteers ready to start the renovations and open the store without haste. Burgers and coffee were the order of the day on Monday this week for the grand opening. As Cumnock and district residents say “it can be done” whenever, wherever it comes to saving and rebuilding their rural village. The other saying “we never, ever, give up”. Thankfully! Why not go for a drive this week and check out the new-look store.

ABOVE: Sarah, store manager Bernadette, Tom of Thomas Cook Constructions, and Henry volunteered their time painting and rejuvenating the Cumnock General Store.

Rozzi’s Thought for the Day: “Don't wait for someone to bring you flowers. Plant your own garden and decorate your own soul.”

More than tea and scones Molong CWA serves up home truths by Megan Peffer In September the Molong CWA had the opportunity to run the Devonshire Tea Room at the Molong Show. Photographed above are some of the hard workers who gladly gave their time for the show. “It was “a delight” to be part of the day: Thank you to the Molong Show Committee and those who came to support us on the day. It was a great success and we look forward to being at the next Molong Show. But there is so much more to CWA NSW than scones! ADHD Inquiry: Recently the CWA of NSW made a submission to the ADHD inquiry, calling for governments to investigate ways to reduce the costs of diagnosing and treating adult ADHD.

The association then made the issue the focus of its annual September Awareness Week campaign. The campaign focussed on increasing the awareness around neurodiverse conditions, with an emphasis on ADHD and the growing number of adult women who are being diagnosed with the condition. The challenges of diagnosis, accessibility and affordable treatment options, especially for families in remote, rural and regional NSW concerned CWA members and state executive. This is one of the many important issues that CWA members across the state and nation represent to governments and authorities on behalf of rural and remote communities. Please contact Megan Peffer 0434 674 214 for more info. DONT FORGET the Molong Christmas Shopping Night on Friday, 1 December from 5pm. Molong’s Bank Street will be filled with activities, food and plnty of goodies for all ages. So get out your santa hat, your Christmas carol voice, and some good cheer and join the community to celebrate what has been a rocky 12 months!

AFTER THE FLOOD

Buy Back: Kath Boyan standing outside her flood damaged (now condemned) cottage in Betts Street Molong. Kath’s former home, is apparently next on the list of council’s buy back program. There are apparently 3 homes in Betts Street, one on the corner of Euchareena Road - and the Townsend home (next to the bowling club) plus the Railway Gatekeeper’s Cottage (corner of Euchareena Road and Watson Street).

Eugowra marks 12 months on

As central west towns mark the one-year anniversary of the flood of this week, the people of Eugowra gathered to remember and honour the lives affected by this major event which ripped through the town. A reflection service was held in Apex Park featuring a message read from the GovernorGeneral of Australia, the Honourable David Hurley, addresses from Cabonne Mayor Kevin Beatty and MP Andrew Gee, as well as locals including Hugh Ellis, Sean Haynes and music and poetry from local artists. The structure of the service was determined by members of the Eugowra community and was a solemn occasion reflecting on the immense loss and a time to encourage, inspire and reflect on the reliance shown by the community. In his welcome address, Deputy Mayor Jamie Jones said: “We come together to honour the memory of those we have lost.” “We pay tribute to the countless individuals who selflessly came to the aid of the Eugowra community,” he said.

“As we gather here today, let us also remember that we are here to look to the future, to find hope amidst the darkness, The stone unveiled to and to remember the flood and embrace the storm events on November possibility 2022. of a positive future for Eugowra.” A memorial rock was unveiled in Eugowra town centre, a piece of local granite selected by members of the community. It is inscribed by the local granite mill with a short story outlining the events of 13 and14 November. It was places in the gardens of Apex Park to enable all to remember the tragic events.

The clean-up operation after the floodwaters subsided. The resiliance of the community is to be commended.

Let’s get together, Molong

Meet Jason Drew, former Molong Caravan Park resident, who escaped the November 2022 flood when his motorhome was hit by the massive shipping container. The container was picked up by the raging flood waters from its position in the railway yards (corner Watson and Riddell Streets) to its final resting place on the corner of Watson and Hill Streets (opposite the caravan park). Unfortunately for Jason - the wild voyage of the shipping container (apparently full of track workers heavy equipment) hit the motorhome and turned it 360 degrees before declaring it ‘unrepairable and unlivable. With no insurance and nowhere to live - Jason was offered a ‘home’ at Mary and Mick Mulhall’s property. A life-saver! A welcome visitor to Molong/Cabonne is ABC Central West Breakfast presenter, Alex James. Last Friday, Alex spent a few hours in Bank Street interviewing MAG Chair, Peter Batten, business owners and residents. Relaying her interviews on her morning broadcast, Alex provides a caring, compassionate and understanding interview and thankfully, talks about ‘moving on’ with those she interviews. Thank you Alex.

Another recent welcome visitor to Molong and Cabonne was a delightful young woman called Jess, a freelance journo/ photographer who came to town (from the Sunshine Coast Qld) to put together a story about the rebuilding after the November floods. Not sure when Jess’ client, the Australian Women’s Weekly, will publish the story and range of interviews, photos etc - but keep an eye out at Matt and Kaylene’s and your local newsagency outlets. Like Alex (ABC), those who met and talked to Jess loved her vibrancy, approach, and spending time with her. Thank you Jess and Australian Women’s Weekly.

Remembrance Day 2023 - Lest We Forget

Molong marks day of memorial

Central school hosts service to remember The students of Molong Central School gathered at the Pines to observe Remembrance Day last Friday. Captains Adam Spencer, Kelsey Quin, Ivy Lewis and Thomas Gavin led the ceremony with Kelsey speaking at length to the significance of the minute's silence during commemoration ceremonies. The quiet and respectful tone reflected well upon the student body present for the ceremony. On the following Saturday, school captains Cooper Kelly and Tengis Mieklejohn represented the school at the town Village Green service. A wreath was laid on behalf of all staff and students of Molong Central.

A small gathering of returned servicemen, servicewomen and their families, residents and visitors stood together on Molong's Village Green last Saturday to mark Remembrance Day. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the gathering remembered the brave men and women from Molong and the district who set off

to World War 1, and every time after during Australia's war involvements. It was a touching scene at the town's Cenotaph overlooking the red rose gardens and the historical buildings that have stood the test of time witnessing pride and faith of the community, and the respect we give to those service people we know, do

REG’S BENCH My wife said to me "The two things I cook best are meatloaf and apple pie Which one is this I asked. A man walks into a bar. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a little man, maybe a foot tall, and a little piano. He puts them both on the bar and the little guy starts playing Mozart as the man orders his drink. The bartender says "I'm sure it's none of my business, but where did you find a little man who plays piano like that?" The guy says "There's a genie outside granting wishes, I bet he's still there if you hurry." The bartender runs outside, and moments later a bunch of ducks come in through the front door and start causing a big ruckus. The bartender says "You didn't tell me the genie was deaf, I asked for a million bucks, not a million ducks." The guy says Do you really think I asked for an eleven inch pianist?" I was driving down a dark lonely road one night when a saw an attractive woman hitchhiking on the side of the road. I stopped and picked her up and during the small talk I asked her what she did for a living. “I’m a witch.’ “A witch?’ “Yes.”

QUICK CROSSWORD

“You mean a witch like spells and turning people into frogs and that?” ‘Yup’ “I don’t believe you.” She slid across the bench seat in my truck, put her hand on the inside of my thigh, leaned over closer, pressing a firm breast against my arm and whispered in my ear, “I bet I can turn you into a motel…” My wife asked for some peace and quiet while she cooked dinner So I took the batteries out of the smoke alarm. Larry, the clumsy carpenter, was using his tablesaw and leaned in close to check he was following the line he had marked on the plank. ZANNGGG! His left ear gets neatly severed, tumbles through the air and lands in the pile of sawdust. Screaming in pain and panic, Larry drops to the ground, one hand pressed against his head and the other sifting through the sawdust. Joe, hearing the commotion, races over to help. When Larry tells him what happened, Joe starts searching too. Suddenly Joe pulls a bloody left ear from the sawdust, "Is this it Larry?", he asks. Larry takes a look and then goes back to searching. "Nah, mine had a pencil behind it."

Sport Molong Golf by the Ghost Walker Another disappointing roll-up for twilight golf on Friday with there again being only 10 players for the two-person Ambrose event. There were a couple of players away and a couple were working late but I don’t think the numbers were where the organisers were hoping. The winners this week, and taking home the prawns, were Warwick Doulman and Jess Clayton with the other teams not far behind. Troy Warner returned from attending the Melbourne Cup to play the twilight golf event but there must be something in the water down in Melbourne because he came back with a very belligerent attitude. Then again he may have just found me rebarbative. Sunday morning golf wasn’t any better, player wise, with again 10 players for a two-person Ambrose event. The winners were Matt Philpott and Steven Ball by just one stroke from a couple of the other teams. Mick Philpott, despite putting his tee shot on the seventh over the fence, played some great drives and improving all the time. It’s just a case of remembering the advice Bro and Choppers had given him. Unfortunately I don’t know when we’ll see Trevor ‘Choppers’ Lamb again as he hurt his back a while ago and hasn’t been able to play golf. Matt Earle didn’t have his best game and had some very lucky ricochets with his golf ball twice hitting branches but still ending up in the middle of the fairway. He also put his tee shot over the fence on the seventh with the ball easily found in the driveway over the road. After a game of golf you’ll find Stubba, very much a student of the game, with an analytical mind, philosophising over the game. This week’s gem was: “If it’s gone past the hole, you’ve hit it too far.” Very good, Peter. Bro then decides to add his bit, quoting Clint Eastwood on the movie Heartbreak Ridge: “Adapt and overcome,” said Bro, relating to changing your golf game if things aren’t working as they should be. Insightful stuff from the boys! Paul Glynn and Troy Warner played in the twenty-seven hole at Blayney Open Tournament on Sunday but Paul didn’t think they were in the prizes. Twilight golf again on this Friday, 5pm for 5.30pm and golf also on Sunday 8.30am for 9am. Everyone is welcome to play.

Pool fence and mural new attractions @ the Molong Swimming Pool

The good news is that Cabonne swimming pools have now reopened for season 23/24 - and just in time for the current hot weather. Local kids, families, and regular swimmers of all ages are thrilled to see their pools back again. It’s time for summer fun ... warm days... cool water ... happiness for the whole family and every resident in town. Give it a try. Molong pool has a new fence after the November 2022 flood. A smart new fence organised and built by Justin and Tania Lampe of Fencing1. This is a great new safety feature. Mark Oates has almost finished the wall murals with bright colours, beach images and tranquil natural pools in fern filled areas. Now there are two great views for swimmers and sun bathing enthusiasts at Molong. One of Mark’s inspiring

murals, the other looking north over the creek to Mr Roberts’ paddocks where sheep can be seen grazing, the train line where the mighty engines and carriages pass by, and further up the hill - where one of Molong’s earliest settler homesteads the Round House, once stood. Let’s enjoy the trees standing guard over the Molong Creek, the new ideas, life saving teams and time with each other as a community having fun. The Express is looking forward to the Molong, Cumnock, Manildra, Cudal Swimming Clubs starting their training and competitions again. (Note: Express team will love to receive reports and photos for our communities to enjoy reading about in the Express - seeing the growth and achievements of local kids is something our readers love to be part of).

Take a dip and get your suit wet

Tuesday the Express found Colleen Lay and Rhoma Hale (with pool staff member, Delta looking on) enjoying a swim in the cool water, under the brilliant sunshine in the best summer Bruce Stewart and Ryan Smith, two of the new community ‘meeting place’ - the Molong Pool. See Opening lifeguard team members we photographed at the Hours for Molong, Cumnock, Cudal, Manildra and Yeoval Molong Pool on Tuesday. It’s good to see Bruce back Swimming Pools above. Try all pools? at the Molong Pool.
