NSW Open bringing the best in the country to Molong

With only two weeks to go until Molong hosts the NSW Open Disc Golf Championships, the field is filling up, with many of the most talented Disc Golfers in the country. The high-quality championship level course, along with professionally run events and the welcoming local community, has seen many of the best players heading our way to compete in the peak Disc Golf event in the state. The event will also be the largest Disc Golf event ever to be held in NSW with around 150 players travelling from every state competing in the highly-prized threeday tournament. “At last count we had many of the highest rated male players in the country, as well as Cassie Sweeten, the number one female player and 8-time National Champion, who will travel up from Geelong to join us” said Tournament Director Sharon Costa.

The strong female contingent will also feature reigning NSW Open Female Champion, Estonian Kairi Koobakenne who will make the journey from Sydney to defend her title. In huge news organisers have recently had confirmation that Luke Bayne of Brisbane, the number one player in Australia, will be joining the event, having recently returned from the Professional Disc Golf World Championships in the USA and the World Teams event in Croatia. Joining Luke will be Chris Hill of Newcastle, who is the top player in NSW, ACT’s best two players in Austin D’Alessandro and Jade Brady, as well as Dylan Feldman, Victoria’s number one and winner of this year’s Australian Championships, held in April. The field also features two of the young rising stars in the sport in Atticus Ariston from Hobart and Perth’s Blake Houston. Also travelling up for the event is Melbourne’s David Perry who took out the Central West Cold Snap tournament, held here in Molong back in August, who will be a serious contender once again. “These are some extremely talented athletes and legends in the game in this part of the world,” Sharon said “and we are fortunate to have people of this calibre coming to our town for this big event. It would be great to see plenty of locals out there checking out this great sport and to see just how good these players are.” A strong field of local players will be led by Molongbased pro player Kevin Costa, who currently leads the Western NSW Tour, along with talented local juniors Lydia Philpott, Jaiden Gallard, Noah Mathews and LilyNicholson Love, all of whom should put up a strong showing. The NSW Open will be held at the Molong Disc Golf Course, on the grounds of the Molong Golf Course and Showground over the October Long Weekend, with the

The event will also attract significant media coverage and will be professionally filmed with edited round coverage to be posted of the top players in action. Why not head out to the course over the weekend of 1st to 3rd of October to see why Disc Golf is now one of the fastest growing sports in the world and just how lucky we are to have facilities like these, which are the envy of many in the city and much bigger centres, in our great little town.

two or more years ago. Joining Molong’s growing number of new enterprises - Pauline and Lynda (see below), plus the new Florist etc shop in the upper block of Bank Street. Two new hospitality businesses will open by the end of this year. Meanwhile - the news is spreading fast across NSW - Molong - “is a place to shop, visit and live...”. That’s the latest news ... more to come.

Robbie, Nathan Lee and Alex Scheibner (Blacksmith and Artist) of Talerwin Forge enterprise of Rylstone. Alex’s brilliant and popular creations, including handmade silver jewellery and forged items are available at The Molong Stores and leading Galleries across NSW. Alex, with Robbie’s encouragement and mentoring ... now handcrafts a fabulous range of hats available from The Molong Stores. “I see something - a new idea - and I find myself making it” said the talented multi-skilled Alex. There’s more ... read on! The Express team were pleased to meet the extremely talented Blacksmith and Artist, Alex Scheibner recently at The Molong Stores first birthday celebrations. Blacksmithing is in Alex’s genes a skill passed down to him from six generations of family members from Slovakia (now Ukraine). “Dad broke the family tradition of becoming a Blacksmith. He became a Geologist instead.” However, the trade did not escape Alex who took up a 4 year apprenticeship with Wrought Artworks who operated from what was formerly known as the Eveleigh Locomotive Yards. “The trade did not come easily to me” said Alex. The Blacksmith apprenticeship was an ‘old school type’. We worked on the original railway works tar and dirt floor using coke in the forges. Even the pay was from an old award book - $120 per week before tax. Luckily I was living at home in Sydney at the time.” “My first job was in forging tiny leaves made from iron for a client of the business. My most interesting job was in the restoration of sections of the Queen Elizabeth Gates at the Opera House - made possible from sections of the Centennial Park fence.” After his apprenticeship time was served - Alex travelled overseas as part of the Post Apprenticeship Journeyman program. “I heard about the 3 month program through the Artist Blacksmith Association in the USA. I was fortunate to be accepted into the program and to work with Tony Swanton of ‘Sword and Stone’ in California. Tony specialised in my dream area - building swords, armour and ironically he was also a stone cutter - mainly of gemstones.” Returning home to the family property ‘Talerwin’ at Rylstone the opportunity came to form the ‘Talerwin Forge’ business with his parents Tanya and Erwin. “We opened the business in 1999 and two years later built a workshop and retail space from local stone. I worked in a nearby mine, underground, to raise the cash to set up at Talerwin.” “Eventually I pivoted away from making swords and armour to design and build more figurative art pieces - and now abstract sculptures which I mainly sell through galleries and commissions as public art pieces.”

A phone call from Robbie at The Molong Stores has added a new skill and product to Alex’s range. “Can you make these?” was Robbie’s question to Alex. I now provide The Molong Stores with hats, leather belts, bags - handmade timber hat blocks with forged steel display attachments ... and the list of what Alex can make extends. “Rob is the expert milliner/hat maker. I’ve been very appreciative of what he has taught me and the opportunity to further build my business. He is a great mentor”. Pop into The Molong Stores and ask Robbie Carroll to show you Alex’s range of handmade products - perfect as a treat for self - and/and or a unique gift for others. Note: Alex came to Molong as the partner of the gorgeous and talented Katy-May (that’s another story coming to the Express soon). We hope the brilliant and lovely young couple will one day (soon) make Molong their second home (and workshop). Talk to Alex on 0428791364

New Manildra Bridge construction to start

Abergeldie Pty Ltd has been awarded the tender to build a new $12 million concrete bridge over Mandagery Creek at Manildra with construction set to begin on 26 September. Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Sam Farraway said the new bridge on Henry Parkes Way will accommodate higher mass vehicles thanks to wider travel lanes and improved road approaches as well Drawing of new bridge with pedestrian crossing as better access for and demolition occurring at the same time. pedestrians with a footpath on the northern side [Ed. The existing bridge has narrow lane widths and does not meet modern design standards. A durability assessment has identified extensive carbonation, low concrete strength and cracking. The new bridge will be wider than the existing and will provide a footpath on the northern side of the bridge. The new bridge will provide: • longer lasting, stronger bridge with a smoother ride • improved road user safety through wider travel lanes and improved road approaches • reduced ongoing maintenance costs • pedestrian walkway to improve pedestrian access • the taking of Higher Mass Limit (HML) loading Transport for NSW investigated a number of options including replacement of the bridge on a new upstream or downstream alignment. The bridge, and the roads it connects, are critical to the operation of the flour mill. Given the road alignment and mill structures placement it was not possible to build a new bridge right next

door. Somewhere else up or down the creek would have disrupted Manildra streets and traffic forever.

Tourism boost puts regional NSW on the map

New, innovative and unforgettable tourism drawcards that will bring visitors from far and wide to regional NSW may be eligible for funding through the NSW Government’s $150 million Regional Tourism Activation Fund. NSW Nationals Upper House MP Sam Farraway said round two of the Fund is now open to support the local tourism industry in the Orange electorate. “The opening of round two of the Regional Tourism Activation fund is fantastic news for tourism operators and small businesses across the Central West,” Mr Farraway said. “We want more people to experience and enjoy everything our beautiful regional NSW has to offer – especially in the Orange electorate which is blessed with great food, great wineries, and great walking and cycling trails. “Funding in the past has helped transform unused precincts into thriving tourism hotspots like the ‘Road Kill’ 18 metre-long sculpture at the Four Mile Reserve in Forbes. “The NSW Nationals is getting regional NSW working again, our record investment into schools, roads and hospitals has made our regional towns the number one choice for NSW families to live and work – now we want to make them the number one place to visit.” Owner/ Manager of Phillip Shaw Wines in Orange, Damian Shaw, thanked the NSW Government saying the investments would deliver stability to the industry. “Managing our business through COVID has been a struggle,” Mr Shaw said. “Lockdowns and boarder closures, while necessary, deterred people from getting out and experiencing the very best our regions has to offer. “Additionally, it is hard to compete with tourist operators in the metro region who draw in international crowds and offer employment opportunities to locals. “These funds will stop this, activate our region and highlight

the best Orange has to offer while creating well paid jobs right here and putting our hotels, wines and attractions on the radar! “I implore local councils and groups eligible to develop plans and apply for these grants”. Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole said the Regional Tourism Activation Fund supports local economies and jobs by backing unique tourism experiences that will attract visitors and showcase what our regions have to offer. “Regional NSW has the best destinations and experiences on offer across Australia, so it makes sense that we invest in new high impact projects that will drive tourism dollars into the regions,” Mr Toole said. “In Round One, we supported more than 30 projects investing close to $30 million to bring visitors to the regions, including major upgrades to the Royal Flying Doctor Service’s Outback Visitor Centre in Broken Hill that is expected to attract thousands of people each year. “Every dollar spent by visitors at local shops, cafes, accommodation and visitor attractions provides a much-needed boost to our regional economies following COVID-19 and severe weather events that have hampered the tourism industry in NSW.” The latest round of the fund is for high-impact projects that will increase visitor numbers, spending and the length time people are staying in regional NSW. The $150 million Regional Tourism Activation Fund Round Two is part of the NSW Government’s $3.3 billion Regional Growth Fund. Applications for Round Two of the Regional Tourism Activation Fund close on 27 September 2022 at 5pm.

Shock school study reveals need for farm lessons

An Australian university has discovered four in five primary school students have no idea how modern milk is produced. The survey of more than 5000 Australian primary and secondary students found many had outdated ideas about where food came from, with the majority thinking cows were still milked by hand. NSW Farmers Dairy Committee chair Colin Thompson said he could hardly blame the students for their lack of knowledge, with Australia increasingly urbanising and losing its farming connections. “Once upon a time cows were milked by hand, but commercial dairy operations are a pretty high-tech affair these days,” Mr Thompson said. “A lot of these young people probably want to grow up to work in technology or robotics, and don’t realise the opportunities that exist in agriculture to do just that. “We need to do more to teach students where their food comes from, and to value the local farmers who produce that food.” With a growing global population and food scarcity on the rise around the world, boosting agricultural productivity was seen as a necessity by the industry. Georgia Campbell from NSW Farmers, who delivers the popular Kids To Farms program, said when school

students realised they could one day make a living flying drones or using robots on a farm, their eyes lit up. “It’s so great to see these students come to a farm expecting to see one thing and then learning it’s a fascinating industry with lots of potential,” Ms Campbell said. “There are so many misconceptions out there about farming being this simple, low-tech thing, but the reality is it’s a specialised profession. “Once they get a glimpse of what agriculture is about it’s like the lights get switched on, and that’s exactly what Kids To Farms is designed to do.” The Kids to Farms program, a partnership between NSW Farmers and the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, aims to give primary school students two agricultural experiences by the age of 12. To date, more than 3200 students have benefitted from this opportunity, but Mr Thompson said there was a clear need to do more to bridge the knowledge gap. “We’ve just had this federal Jobs and Skills Summit, and we need to remember that today’s kids will be tomorrow’s workers,” Mr Thompson said. “Getting students exposed to the reality of agriculture and all of the new technologies emerging – they will learn that tomorrow’s farmers will be coders and technicians

and engineers as well. “I’d love to see more programs to bring students faceto-face with farming, and help dispel some of myths and stereotypes still hanging around.”

Consumers urged to avoid ticket resellers

NSW Fair Trading Commissioner Natasha Mann is calling on consumers to avoid dealing with ticket reselling platforms advertising tickets to popular events, often at exorbitant prices in violation of State laws. Football fans racing to secure tickets for the finals and parents making plans for the upcoming school holidays are reminded that it is against the law for tickets to events in NSW to be resold for profit. “In NSW, ticket sellers are prohibited from reselling a ticket for more than 10 per cent above the original price for an event held in the state,” Ms Mann said. “Corporations found breaching ticket reselling laws can be fined up to $110,000, while individuals can be fined up to $22,000. “If a ticket is sold for more than the allowed cap, the event organiser may cancel the ticket and refuse entry to the person who holds it.” Data collected by NSW Fair Trading showed a single ticket to the National Rugby League grand

final in Sydney on 2 October 2022 was being offered at 49 per cent above the original price of a ticket in the same section of the ground on a ticket reselling website. In other examples of transactions on ticket reselling websites, a consumer paid $977 for two tickets to Robbie Williams when the face value of the tickets was $198. In another case, a consumer paid $700 for tickets to Harry Styles that had a total value of $300. “Frustrated consumers have also contacted NSW Fair Trading with complaints about fraudulent or fake tickets, of tickets being purchased but not delivered and delays receiving a refund for cancelled events,” Ms Mann said. “NSW Fair Trading conducts regular compliance activities in relation to the reselling of tickets for events in NSW. “Consumers should avoid dealing with ticket resellers in order to avoid disappointment.”

Spring has Sprung! Or has it really? According to the BOM we are set to have a third La Nina event. Can we endure any more rain, and more to the point can the ground? I have never heard so many tales of utes, tractors, motorbikes and horses bogged in my life! In our September column we discuss ways to manage the soil, crops and pastures, livestock, and interesting finance options for livestock. If you happen to hear a constant hum in the air, it’s the helicopters and planes which have become, in most cases, the only way to assist the crops and pastures rather than the traditional ground spray rigs. As you are all aware by now, we are lucky to have Jeremy Evans as our agronomist, Jeremy is a mind full of information when it comes to tackling issues with stripe rust, and various diseases affecting crops this wet season.

the green grass is ‘watery’, stock may be scouring, and looking ‘poor’. Our ‘Green Feed’ mineral supplement blocks, are a terrific way to provide what your livestock are lacking from the grass. The ‘Parasight’ machine we have in branch provides an ‘on the spot’ worm egg count for sheep, cattle and horses. Bring in a sample, and we can tell whether or not they need a drench. The right advice and drench is on hand. Another issue some farmers have encountered, especially with sheep, is Phalaris Staggers. When some varieties of phalaris grass grows rapidly at this time of the year, it contains toxic alkaloids rendering it poisonous. The sheep get wobbly and lose condition, and unfortunately, once this happens it’s often too late. Nothing can be done apart from move the sheep from the paddock, monitor them and feed them. Sometimes, a cobalt mineral supplement can

Jeremy goes to field days and information talks with our suppliers to keep up-to-date with any new ways to protect your crops and increase yield. Pasture options for Spring may vary according to the use of the paddock and your rotation program. There is always a new development in crop and pasture science that Jeremy will greet whole-heartedly and is eager to impart his knowledge. While the paddocks are so wet, many livestock are suffering with sore feet. Zinc Sulphate footbaths, mineral supplements and vaccines can help with the issues associated with the wet ground. Apart from this, we have had a sudden flush of green feed, although it looks appetising, the nutritional content is not available,

Defeat of the Voice would be a body blow for achieving a republic The passage of the proposed referendum on a Voice to Parliament could be a necessary, albeit not a sufficient, condition for Australia to become a republic in the next few years. Anthony Albanese, on grounds of respect, is declining to be drawn on the republic issue immediately after the queen’s death. Assistant Minister for the Republic Matt Thistlethwaite has lips buttoned (although he was embarrassed when Sky publicised a fundraising dinner he was slated to attend next month). Albanese’s bid to change Australia’s constitutional arrangements has been pencilled in for a second term, assuming Labor gets one. Thistlethwaite’s early appointment both sent a signal and marked the start of tilling the ground, initially in a lowkey way. A defeat for the Voice, however, would potentially be a massive stumbling block. It’s hard to see the government being willing to risk a second referendum rebuff. On the other hand, a win for the Voice would create momentum for a republic referendum, ending the perception that constitutional change has become almost impossible. Assuming the Voice were enshrined, the push for the republic would still face formidable obstacles, arguably tougher than when people voted it down in 1999. Then, despite the result, there had been a strong mood for change. The controversial role of the governorgeneral in the 1975 political crisis was in relatively near memory; now it is ancient history for most people. And in the 1990s, moving to a republic was cast as important for Australia’s foreign policy pitch to Asia. Today, the republic issue faces a deal of inertia, despite predictions its time would come after the queen’s reign. Maybe in another three years enthusiasm would gear up, but there is no certainty. A republican identity no longer seems as vital for Australia’s presence internationally. That’s established. A Roy Morgan Research SMS poll on Monday of 1,012 people found 60% favoured Australia remaining a monarchy; 40% supported a move to a republic with an elected president. Backing for the status quo was higher among women and older people. A discount factor might apply to a poll this week, but the long-term trend is revealing. Roy Morgan CEO Michele Levine said more Australians have been in favour of remaining as a monarchy than becoming a republic consistently since November 2010. Prior to that there had been a consistent majority in favour of becoming a republic from 1994 to 2008, she said. In the public mind, a main reason for keeping the present system seems to be the “if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it” argument. People have become apathetic. Once the republic debate was seriously re-ignited,

though, apathy would turn into sharp division. For those seeking change, the “wicked problem” would become – as it was in 1999 – the model. The planned model in 1999 had a president appointed by two-thirds of the federal parliament. That would ensure bipartisanship and enable minimum alteration to the detail of the constitutional arrangements. But some republicans wanted the president popularly elected, and this split helped kill the referendum. In the years since, support for popular election has only grown, to the point where it is almost impossible to envisage the public voting for a non-elected model. The Australian Republic Movement has proposed a model in which the public would choose from a list of candidates nominated by federal, state and territory parliaments. It’s easy to understand why the public, in this age of political distrust, would favour an elected rather than an appointed presidency. But it is a model fraught with challenges. An elected president would have his or her own mandate from the voters. This would mean the powers of the president would need to be very carefully codified, and this is difficult. The issue of powers is central because of the nature of the federal parliamentary system, in which the Senate can block supply, as happened in 1975, which led to the governor-general using his reserve powers to sack the prime minister. More broadly and less dramatically, an elected president – especially a popular figure who wanted to assert themselves – could come to be seen as an alternative source of authority to the prime minister. Groups with grievances against the government could get publicity by making appeals to the president. And how would an election for president be conducted? What sort of issues would candidates campaign on? Or would they not be allowed to “campaign”, but simply run on their CVs? While many commentators see dangers in setting up a potentially competing source of authority, John Quiggin, from The University of Queensland, has the opposite view.

He argues that “the current system gives the prime minister too much power, and this power has been increasingly abused in Australia and other Westminster systems”. Quiggin dismisses the suggestion a president with their own authority deriving from the people could become too powerful. “The parliamentary republic with which we share the most history, the Republic of Ireland, has an elected president, and the system has worked very well. Even though candidates for president have been supported by political parties, they appear not to have acted as partisans in office, and have left the running of the country to the PM,” Quiggin wrote on his blog this week. Human rights barrister Geoffrey Robertson suggests a more radical course, asking: “Do we need a head of state at all?” Criticising Governor-General David Hurley in relation to Scott Morrison’s power grab of multiple ministries, Robertson writes: “If the governor-general is to be no more than a cipher for the prime minister, why not write him – and the royal family – out of the Constitution entirely? "Our elected leader could be sworn in by the chief justice – as in America – and the democratic process can be left to resolve itself according to accepted Westminster conventions subject to any necessary supervision by the High Court.” Well, that would be a budget saving – but it’s not an option we’d see on the Albanese government’s agenda. The attitude of the opposition would be critical to the chances of a republic referendum succeeding. Liberals are split over a republic. “I don’t agree with a republic,” Opposition Leader Peter Dutton declared on Thursday. Of course in a second Labor term there could well be another Liberal leader. Although Thistlethwaite is quiet at the moment, he was expansive in an interview the Sydney Morning Herald published days before the queen’s death. “I think you’ve got to have the Australian people involved at every stage,” he said. “It might involve a plebiscite. It might involve some form of constitutional commission or convention.” He said the Voice “should come first because that’s the great injustice in our Constitution”. “If we can right that wrong with a referendum the next natural progression is […] shouldn’t we have one of our own as head of state? It’s time for the kids to grow up and leave home.” Thistlethwaite did not speculate about where things might stand if the wrong was not righted. (theconversation.com)

‘Children’s Voices in History’

OR

by Rozzi Smith

Meet Susanne Quitmann of Munich, Germany who visited Molong last weekend with her husband Dominik and 8 month old baby daughter, Ronja. Why Molong? The thoughtful academic is currently researching and writing the final dissertation for her academic studies to gain PhD qualifications. Her subject, ‘Children’s Voices in History’ - “I’m focussed on the lives and stories of child migrants who were sent to Australia and Canada”. Hearing of Fairbridge Farm Molong and the exhibition and research centre at the Molong Museum - Susanne made an approach to the local museum and to longtime volunteer and executive member, Sue Milne. It was pleasing for the Express to meet and interview the interesting woman, wife, mother and academic - with excellent English speaking skills - who came to town last week as the guest of the Molong Historical Museum. Susanne interviewed a number of former Fairbridgians as well as some of the members of families who once worked at Fairbridge. Accessing the Molong Museum’s Fairbridge Room and the centrally stored data bases, files, photos of life ‘on the farm’ - was “well worth my time” she said. Whilst there have been important stories of life at Fairbridge as told through David Hill’s published works and others - and as told to the Royal Commission and through the National Redress Scheme process - it may be an ideal opportunity for the final work of this young woman, wife, mother and academic to add a new layer to what is now written in the history books. All will surely agree that whilst it has been important (critical in fact to many lives) that the alleged behaviour reported to have occurred at Fairbridge Farm Molong - of physical, sexual, verbal abuse and suicide - have been documented (and compensation claims have been accessed by those who suffered). (R centre) Susanne Quitmann with Molong Museum research volunteers - (left) Sue Milne who hosted and organised Susanne’s Molong visit and research and (right) Helen Nesbitt. Sue Milne has been a long-time volunteer at the Molong Museum and committee person, newsletter writer and producer. Her mother was a former Molong Fairbridgian. Sue has worked, tirelessly. with other volunteers of the Museum to create the Fairbridge Room which is now the central research and exhibition base for the Old Fairbridgian Society. The Museum volunteers are generally available at the historical building on the corner of Riddell and Gidley Streets (opposite

Truth: It is definitely true. The SES and other volunteer groups, locals, Cabonne Concil and business houses placed sandbags in Bank Street and other areas of town last week when the Molong Creek and other creeks and streams were running a banker after huge downpours. Definitely TRUE to say a huge thank-you to everyone who helped to keep Molong and other villages and towns safe. Thankfully, flood did not happen ... but better to be safe - than sorry!

Truth: Vehices going too

The Express interview with Susanne Quitmann about ‘Children’s Voices in History’ may well provide an outcome of adding a different layer to what is now printed as the history of Fairbridge Molong and that of some experiences of child migration. As a young woman, mother, academic, and noticeably a woman of great heart and feeling - talking with Susanne Quitmann provided the sense that ‘Children’s Voices in History’ may well become an important published work that may allow for the emergence of the spirit and soul of many of (still) ‘unheard’ children’s voices.

fast - Some drivers around town and travelling through town - are reported to be pushing the speed limit and threatening the safety of residents. Seems to go in spates at different times of the year. Happening, again, now. A resident of Phillip Street visited the Express this week with the sad story of an Echidna he found dead on the road at the top end of Phillip Street near the intersection of Short Street. “The Echidna should have been easy for the driver to see - it was the size of a football” he said. Deliberate? Or going too fast to see? Whichever, we need to protect our residents and fauna much better, indeed. Question is? It’s not only the young ones driving fast ... it’s all ages. Please re-consider your speed and drive safe(r).

Truth:

This is definitely not a FIB. Kids riding scooters and bikes along Bank Street - fast - are a threat to shoppers and residents of all ages. Please talk with your young ones and ask them to walk the shopping/business areas of Bank Street and to please wheel their bikes.

Truth:

With the warmer days (hopefully) coming soon - and kids footy, soccer etc ending for the winter months ... we raise the ‘most asked’ and ‘longest asked’ question in town. What can the kids and their families suggest Molong needs to entertain our kids, little ones, teenagers, youth? Parents? Talk to Cabonne Council and to MAG (the Molong Advancement Group) and GrowMolong - bring together your own group of interested parents and young people and start sharing your ideas. It’s up to parents, kids and families to get the ball rolling - and keep it rolling!

Truth or Fib: Why is it that some landlords around town

RSL Club) and on some weekends. Residents, visitors, family researchers are welcome to visit the museum. Best to call Sue first on 0400 425 015

are raising the rent on their long-time investments?. Some, we hear have been raised (or about to be) by up to a massive $100 extra a week. It is said that agents are making the suggestion to property owners. True or Fib? Here we are - prices for food etc going up - everything else, electricity and gas going up, seems to be a very sad attitude if local landlords are wanting more money for their rentals. Particularly at a time when it appears that some properties to rent have been owned for a very long time, interest rates are still at an all time low, and the young, families and older residents who rely on rental accommodation are already suffering and some living under extreme hardship. Is this Molong?

Queen Elizabeth II : The after effects?: A stronger sense of love - the importance of family - of God a united Commonwealth - belief - respect? Rozzi Smith

Most of us have not known a world without Queen Elizabeth II - now we do. There's something missing from our lives - in many different ways - but in the same way we have approached our respective lives after the loss of our mums, dads, grandparents, friends. Queen Elizabeth II was always there. Her face, and that of her family members - staring out at us most week's from newspapers, magazines ... online sites and television and radio. Not always represented positively by the major media gossip and stories! But her Majesty continued to walk her way, stoically and with courage, not sharing her views and her opinions on family matters. Good on her. Indeed, as most of us clear minded thinkers decided - it was none of our business anyway. Fascinated by what we saw as glamour, bling, history, heritage of the monarchy that has survived 61 monarchs of England and Britain over a period of 1200 years - we truthful ones will say "we still love our heritage" and being part of the Commonwealth. What a woman Elizabeth Windsor was. A true leader, intelligent, wife, mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother - a woman who spent 70 years and 214 days as an exceptional leader, mentor and firm believer in God and the millions of people she served. There was one time when I wondered if it was time for Australia to become a Republic. I remember being sorely disappointed back in the 1970's when the Whitlam

Government was sacked by the Governor General - a time when I had faith that the Queen would step in and the Whitlam team might be able to remain and create an opportunity for a more equitable Australian society to emerge. Where the poor could access higher education where the poor, the disabled, the elderly, the indegenous communities would be treated fairer and more equitably. It is not known whether the Queen did step in or not ... however the thought of an Australian leader - like at the time - leading the nation as a Republic - was less welcoming. Monarchist I remain - and I believe Charles as King is capable of being an excellent leader. I look forward to the delightful William succeeding Charles when the time is appropriate. Each, I believe will lead the necessary 'changes'. Right now, with the future of World Peace, looking shaky - with the unknown of what lies ahead with world and singular country economy - the need to wean a number of most of the world's economies relying on (particularly) China, USA, (and others) - and the threat of Climate Change, I believe the time is far from now for Australians to be pushed and shoved into a Republic. What did I learn from Queen Elizabeth II and her passing? I say thank-you, my own personal thank-you for the reminder that came about from your passing and funeral - that I have been giving less value and respect (and belief) to my mixed heritage from my ancestry and family linkages with England and Ireland. I get it!

Public prevented from commemorating Queen Elizabeth II Australian Monarchist League

Once again, the Commonwealth government has locked ordinary Australians out of commemorations for our former sovereign, Queen Elizabeth II. Today it was announced that members of the public would not be allowed to participate in the National Commemorative Service at Parliament House, Canberra, but instead would at best be allowed to watch it on a screen from a safe distance. This decision, announced on the day of the Queen’s funeral and only 3 days before the commemorative service, contradicts statements by the Prime Minister’s Department that the members of the public would be invited to attend the service. Today’s ignominious decision is of a pattern with recent decisions to limit the ability of ordinary Australians to witness the Proclamation of the accession of our new King at Parliament House, and to exclude the people from all official celebrations in Canberra of the Queen’s recent Platinum Jubilee. The Australian Monarchist League calls on the Commonwealth Government to allow the maximum possible participation of the Australian public in the National Commemorative Service. “It is well and good for the Prime Minister to jet to London and have photo opportunities with world leaders; now let the people, who always came first with Her late Majesty, celebrate and remember their servant Queen”.

HOCKEY

Amazing year for 170 strong Molong Hockey Club Hayley Lyons

This year MHC have 170 members. A number of the juniors played in two teams and some also played in our women’s teams. In the junior competition, overall, there were 10 teams. One very noteworthy team, the Lemurs. It is the first time in over 20 years that we have been able to field an allboys team. Out of the 10 teams, 9 made it into the semi-finals. 5 teams in the grand finals. 3 premierships were won. The senior women fielded 3 teams this year, first, second and fourth grade. First and fourth grade made it to the semi-finals, but unfortunately didn’t make the grand final. Second grade were victorious, defeating CYMS 3-1. There were under 11 rep teams. A boys and a girls team travelled to Moorebank to participate in a full field carnival where teams from all over NSW attend. We then had four teams travel to Dubbo to participate in the half field Western Conference competition.

Many of our players also played with Orange Rep teams at State Championships for under 13’s and 15’s. With this many were selected into state squads – Abbie Lyons, Ellie Olsson, Lydia Allcorn, Zoe Banning, Addison Walker, Juliette Mills and Cassidy Hanrahan. Abbie Lyons and Ellie Olsson were selected for the NSW under 13’s team that will be competition in Hobart in the coming weeks. Through the PSSA school sport system there were 7 players from MHC – Indy Vandervelde, Ella Vandervelde, Phoebe Lyons, Milly Olsson, Layne Mills, Abby Armstrong and Riley Peters. Phoebe Lyons and Milly Olsson were selected in the NSWPSSA Hockey team that finished second at the Australia School Sport Championships. What an amazing year for the MHC! We are so very grateful to all the wonderful families for their support throughout the year. The people who volunteered to coach and manage, ensured all the teams were ready to play each week makes this club so amazing to be a part of.

QUICK CROSSWORD

REG’S BENCH Warning - bad jokes ahead The friend I house-share with suffered a terrible steamroller accident. Now he’s my flat mate. When he got to the hospital it was closed so they just slipped him under the door. I asked how long was he in hospital and they told me 3 metres. In hospital wards 2,3 and 4. Things a person searches for most in old age. 6% the meaning of life. 6% love. 6% security. 2% spiritual enlightenment. 80% car keys. Why does my wife always wait until I’m at the opposite end of the house before asking me to ‘Merm frner mernferr brnerfer!’? A man came up to me today and said, "What do you do for a living?" I said, "I'm a spy". He said, "So why are you dressed like a shepherd?" I said, "I'm a shepherd spy" I once had a job at my local cattery, but I had to leave because they reduced meowers... No bowls this last weekend. The rain has been a constant thorn in everyone’s side I think. Hopefully one day the skies will clear, the sun will shine and dry the sodden ground out a wee bit. On Saturday the Molong Hockey Club held their presentation at the Club. What a fantastic turnout the Hockey Club had. With junior and senior awards being presented. Thanks Molong Hockey Club for picking the bowlo for your presentation event, it is greatly appreciated. Congratulations to all teams on a fantastic year and to Div 2 ladies for winning the GF against CYMS 3-1. Big thanks to Bart Sharpe for assisting the bar staff during the day, it was a great effort from you and Janelle. The Members draw of $750 didn’t go off on Saturday night. Commiserations to Adam. If you are a member of the club, come along on Saturday night. This Saturday will be $775.00. The draw is at 5.45pm, with meat tray raffles drawn straight after the badge draw. Happy hour is also on from 4.30pm-6pm with $5 schooners. We now have Carlton Dry on tap. This proved to be very popular on Saturday night. Events coming up • Cowra Ladies Presidents Day 22 September • Molong Ladies Presidents Day 24th September • Brag commences 7 October • Women bowlers are holding a wood raffle – tickets available from the club. • AGM 9 October – nominations for positions on board • McMahons Pairs 15/16 October. 3 bowl pairs.

Nominations close 4 October • Round Robin Triples 19/20 November All nominations for events are on the board or contact Janelle 0418 637 6341 BRAG BOWLS IS BACK - commencing the first Friday after the long weekend. Get your teams of 3 entered in for this fun comp. The cost is $10 per person, this includes green fees and BBQ sandwich after the game. This is a very social, fun event, you are always guaranteed a good laugh. To nominate please ring Bron Trethowan on 0428 668 717 or Margot Brown 0427 261 037 or put your teams name down at the club or Luke at the Newsagency. If you just want to have a roll up occasionally, put your name down as a fill in. There will also be the Club bus to pick you up for $5 if needed. This is a great service and appreciated by all players. We have had a few teams nominated already which is good. The lady’s Presidents Day is on Saturday 24th September. President Janelle is looking forward to the day and is hoping for some lovely spring weather like the men had on Sunday. If you feel like a roll up, every Wednesday at 2pm the greens are there for social bowls. If you have a function coming up and are looking for a venue, give the club a ring and make an inquiry on 0422 677 255.

3 scores selling from 250c to 388c/kg. Prime heavy weight cows sold from 418c to 433c to average 422c/kg. Heavy bulls sold to 360c/kg.

Sunday A slight increase in numbers for golf at the Royal Molong golf course on Sunday saw eight players participate in a twelve hole ambrose event. The scores were again close but the winners were Ged and Michael. Bell managed to sink some great long range putts which kept her and Stubba in the game. Fortunately the course wasn’t quite as wet as last week but there is certainly no run with the thick grass. There was no stick throwing this week although it came close for one player. Stubba and Bell returned from their bowling sojourn and Stubba didn’t even put his tee shot on the seventh over the fence but one player managed to hit the branch in front of the eighth tee. There are those players that think I’m loquacious out on the course but really I’m just encouraging them to play well. But then again I might be trying to bring them down to my level. “My two best shots were the hook and the slice” I informed Bro after golf on Sunday. “But those are two of the worst shots you can make in golf” he replied.

Gerard

Yes I nodded “ that should give you some idea of what the rest of my game was like”. Paul and Al were playing with exactly the same ball on Sunday. I posed this scenario to them. “You have both driven your golf balls deep into the rough. One ball is sitting nicely up on the grass whilst the other is buried. Since both golf balls are identical which ball would you play?” Paul replied “ I’d play the ball that’s sitting up of course unless Al got there first.” This Sunday Manildra golf club are holding their Open tournament with a number of Molong players attending. The Molong course will be available for anyone wishing to have a hit. The following weekend, the October long weekend, the Molong course will be closed to golf due to the NSW Open disc golf tournament being played over the three days.
