Showtime in Molong
Happiness, a beautiful sunny day and smiling faces came together last Sunday (17 November) for the 159th Molong Show held on the Euchareena Road showgrounds and golf club site. Wow! What a day! What an event! Molong's 159th represented what is possible for the town and district when a new generation step forward to keep their local show going and to add to the hardwork and
committment of former show committees. Adding their youthful entrepreneurial spirit to the town's oldest event, the new committee - led by Helen Crisp and Tim Sullivan and supported by their families and new volunteers - created a showcase of Molong today, and a future for the event.

(Left) These nitrous oxide cannisters were found scattered in a local park. Commonly known as ‘nangs’ they are inhaled and used as a recreational drug. Although legal to purchase, they can cause long-term effects and injury including frostbite to nose, lips and throat, lung tissue ruptures, seizures and overdose. They are not safe and it is worrying if they are being purchased and used locally.

Beware of snakes (both black and brown) sighted sunning themselves on the creek walking/cycle path on Watson Street and below the swimming pool. Rosie sent us this photo of a large black slithering from the path to the creek - and a large brown that apparently likes to peep out of a hole in the path surprising walkers. “You don’t usually see blacks and browns living so close together,” she said. “Please let your kids know what to do if they see a snake in their path particularly when wandering to the soon-to-be-opened swimming pool.”

PM pledges to visit Eugowra with NSW Premier - Gee
The Prime Minister has pledged to visit Eugowra for a second time following the storm and flood disaster of November 2022, and will invite the NSW Premier to accompany him. The declaration was made during Question Time on Thursday 14 September, in response to a question raised by Independent Member for Calare, Andrew Gee. "It is ten months to the day that horrific torrents of water hit Eugowra, Cudal, Molong, Canowindra, Manildra and Wellington," Mr Gee said. "The failure to deliver our region the same level of support that other disaster-hit areas of the State have received is a disgrace and an outrage. "What is your government doing to get this vital assistance moving? And with the anniversary of the disaster fast approaching, will you again visit Eugowra and our region, and invite the NSW Premier along too?" In response, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese accepted Mr Gee’s invite to return to storm and flood-hit areas of the Central West, and confirmed that he would ask the NSW Premier Chris Minns to join him on the trip. “I certainly will take up the invitation of the Member of Calare to visit the community,” said the Prime Minister. “I’ll invite the NSW Premier as well, because I’m sure at times like this, what we need is for the whole community and different levels of government, federal, state and local, to work together. “I certainly will continue to work closely with the NSW State government to deliver the disaster recovery support that has been committed. “If there’s more that can be done, I’m certainly always up for doing what is necessary for communities that have suffered so much,” the PM said. In addition to this, the PM recalled his visit to Eugowra with former NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet on 22 November 2022. “The power of water was on display for all to see, where some homes had been lifted up, literally, and taken a kilometre down the road,” the PM said. “I pay tribute as well to all of the emergency services workers, to the brave men and women of the Australian Defence Force who took us there on that day, and who did such extraordinary
work assisting the local community, but also to the resilience of that community." The PM also commended Mr Gee’s support of storm and flood-hit areas across the Calare electorate. “I pay tribute to his strong advocacy for his local community,” the PM said. Last week in Parliament, Mr Gee moved a motion calling on the NSW and Federal governments to activate the full suite of disaster assistance to storm, flood and fire-ravaged communities. Mr Gee raised key disaster recovery funding initiatives that have not been approved for devastated areas of the Central West. “Why does the Northern Rivers area have access to the home buyback and retrofit scheme, but the storm and flood-hit areas of the Central West do not?" he asked. "Why is it that other local government areas have access to the Community Assets Program to help rebuild their towns and villages, but councils in our region do not? "Why hasn't a grant program similar to the Northern Rivers Commercial Property Return to Business Support Grant been announced for our storm and flood hit areas? “How can it be that in 2023 we are closing roads instead of fixing them for many months on end, like the Nyrang Creek Bridge and the road between Wellington and Dunedoo? Why are residents in the fire-hit Hill End region still excluded from the $75,000 Special Disaster Grants to help them bounce back from those devastating bushfires?" Mr Gee said this vital support for our region needed to be rolled out without further unforgiveable delay. "Our residents are being treated as secondclass citizens, and this cannot be allowed to stand,” he said.

Dear Sir, I am writing to you to express my congratulations to the new Molong Show Committee for putting on such a successful and revitalised Show last Sunday, following the hiatus caused formerly by the Covid pandemic and last year, wet weather. The new enthusiastic younger generation of committee men and women, have created a show of which they, and the local community, can be justly proud. Local business houses put on some interesting displays of their wares, as well as the traditional school entries, plus those of cooking, arts and crafts, and photography. The agricultural sector was well represented with displays of sheep, cattle, wool, eggs, and horses, plus the working dog yard trials. As well as the traditional meal shed; located under a tent with tables and chairs, patrons could purchase a beef brisket or lamb roll with cold slaw, and could wash it down with a cold beer or nonsome impression roads can wait. alcoholic beverage. "Of the $670 million of supposedly new This venue created an money, she’s announced only $30 million will be delivered to councils this financial year." Mr Farraway sai this was "shocking" and "not good enough". “Regional NSW needs their road funding now not next year or the year after. Councils also need a leg up by having roads transferred from their management to help ease the burden of maintaining them into the future," he said. “The announcement marks the end of the former Governments hugely successful Fixing The future of the flood stricken Local Roads, Fixing Country Bridges and Fixing Molong Bowling Club will be Country Roads programs. Bumpy path ahead to fix regional roads - Farraway
NSW Shadow Minister for Regional Roads Sam Farraway has demanded NSW Minister for Regional Roads, Jenny Aitchison, come clean and admit she’s only delivering $30 million – not $670 million - to councils this financial year to fix potholes on the state’s regional roads. Mr Farraway said while he’s pleased that after six months in government the minister is finally delivering some money to regional roads, she needs to do more like reinstating the Road Reclassification Program and the $193 million that was allocated to it immediately. “The Coalition delivered a $19.4 billion regional road and transport infrastructure pipeline, we were building legacy road infrastructure to transform travel in the regions and repairing roads after the devastating floods,” Mr Farraway said. “The only way councils can fix potholes is by having the funding which is why we fast tracked $280 million into their bank accounts early this year on top of the very first dedicated $50 million Pothole repair program in 2022. “But Minister Aitchison seems to be under

atmosphere which was both convivial and friendly, and offered welcome respite for the weary and thirsty patron after a long day of sightseeing. The side show people were less in number this year but this didn’t detract from the show at all, in fact I think it made the show all the better, as there were still ample rides for children who wished to partake in them, but there was less noise and the lesser numbers meant that the show was not cut in half between the horse events and the other agricultural displays. To top the day off, a new event not seen at the Molong Show before, was the dog jump, which drew large and enthusiastic crowds. I’m sure that the committee has learned a lot this year and that next year’s show will offer even more in the way of ideas and display. In conclusion, thankyou to a great committee and community of young enthusiastic and hard working people, who put on a great show. William Lee Molong.

'Mad Monday' in Molong this long weekend
Molong’s Kate Redfern and Sally Brazier of Lime and Stone coined the phrase ‘Mad Monday in Molong’ to describe the atmosphere in their business and the town on the day of the Molong Village Markets. That’s because thousands of people flock to the event and then flood the main street businesses. “Our shops and cafes are bustling with activity on ‘mad Monday in Molong’, which is a great showcase of our town,” Ms Redfern said. “The last time the markets were held on June long weekend, hundreds of people came into the cafe for food and coffee. I know the other businesses in town were also really busy.” The Molong Village Markets are sponsored by Cabonne Council and hosted by the Molong Advancement Group and held three times a year - on the Monday of the long weekends in Easter, King’s Birthday and Labour Day. Molong Village Markets coordinator, Maddison Jeffries, said the October markets are

Facebook. Regardless of ones desire to grow food all year or just for the warm season, September is an important month in the veg grower's dairy. A key date that I have marked off in September is the Spring Equinox, which occurs on the 23rd. Representing the true start to Spring, the equinox has almost an equal amount of daylight to darkness over a 24-hour period. After the equinox, daylight hours continue to increase while darkness decreases causing a surge of growth in seedlings that have been planted earlier in the year. If you've been following along, you will know that I planted seeds for my chillis, capsicums, eggplants and tomatoes, under lights, last month. I will aim to have these moved into larger pots of fresh compost prior to the equinox to ensure they have enough food and space to grow bigger when nature intends. My chillis are coming along nicely, so I have been moving them outside for about 15 minutes a day to expose them to sunlight and wind in order to encourange stronger growth. Over the first week or so of September I will increase this time until they are spending all day outside. This process is called 'hardening off'. I do this with any plants that are started indoors. It's important to remember to bring your young seedlings inside, every night, until all risk of frost has passed. Before the equinox I aim to have many other summer crops started indoors, including herbs, watermelon, pumpkin, zucchini and cucumbers. It is possible to plant cucumber and zucchini use of the unit and are keen to get seeds directly in the garden, after the frosts started, according to Mr Brunton. have passed. This saves a lot of time and effort This project was supported that would otherwise be required with potting up by funding from the Australian and hardening off. However, I recommend that Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry as part of the Educating Kids About Agriculture - 'iFarm program'.
Molong Central School goes "iFarming"
Molong Central School has been successful in gaining a federal grant to obtain an iFarm. From a pool of more than 30 applicants from NSW, the school was successfully selected thanks to Science head teacher, Terry Bruton's application. You may wonder what exactly is an iFarm. It is an interactive, agricultural, science research station for high schools - designed to stimulate interest in careers based in agriculture and improve understanding of the resources required to produce food and fibre. Students will design and research the best approaches to producing food and fibre, and have the opportunity to conduct a trial with all the other schools that have an iFarm through its online connectivity. The cost of the iFarm is approximately $60,000 to $90,000 per unit and has state-of-the-art equipment and is fully automated. Molong Central School students already have plenty of ideas on the

Starting soft herbs like Basil indoors also gives you a head start for summer and helps hide the tiny seedlings from hungry slugs. Outdoors, my garden beds were all fed and mulched in late autumn, so throughout Spring I will turn my attention to setting up trellises and installing drip irrigation to all my garden beds in preperation for what I hope will be an abundant warm season ahead.

MOLONG EXPRESS, Thursday 21 September 2023
REG’S BENCH A fleeing German, desperate for water, was plodding through the African desert when he saw something far off in the distance. Hoping to find water, he hurried toward the oasis only to find a British soldier selling regimental ties. The German asked, "Do you have water?" The soldier replied, "There is no water, the well is dry. Would you like to buy a tie instead? They are only £5." The German shouted, "You idiot infidel! I do not need an over-priced tie. I need water! I should kill you, but I must find water first!" "OK," said the soldier, "It does not matter that you do not want to buy a tie and that you hate me. I will show you that I am bigger than that, and that I am a much better human being than you. If you continue over that hill to the east for about two miles, you will find our Sergeant's Mess. It has all the ice cold water you need. Inshallah." Cursing him, the German staggered away over the hill. Several hours later he staggered back, collapsed with dehydration & rasped: "They won't let me in without a bloody tie!” A Police officer stopped at our farm yesterday, he said “I need to inspect your farm for illegal growing drugs.” I said “Okay, but don’t go in that field over there.” The Police officer verbally exploded saying, “Mister, I have the authority of the State Government with me!” Reaching into his rear pants pocket, the arrogant officer removed his badge and shoved it in my face. “See this badge?! This badge means I am allowed to go wherever I wish…. On any land !! No questions asked or answers given!! Have I made myself clear?…. do you understand?!!” I nodded politely, apologized, and went about my chores. A short time later, I heard loud screams, looked up, and saw

QUICK CROSSWORD
the police officer running for his life, being chased by my big old mean bull…. With every step the bull was gaining ground on the officer, and it seemed likely that he’d sure enough get gored before he reached safety. The officer was clearly terrified. I threw down my tools, ran to the fence and yelled at the top of my lungs “Your badge, show him your BADGE!!” A blonde lady motorist was about two hours from Sydney when she was flagged down by a man whose truck had broken down. The man walked up to the car and asked, "Are you going to Sydney?" "Sure," answered the blonde, "do you need a lift?" "Not for me. I'll be spending the next three hours fixing my truck. My problem is I've got two chimpanzees in the back that have to be taken to the Taronga Zoo. They're a bit stressed already so I don't want to keep them on the road all day. Could you possibly take them to the Taronga Zoo for me? I'll give you $200 for your trouble”. "I'd be happy to," said the blonde. So the two chimpanzees were ushered into the back seat of the blonde's car and carefully strapped into their seat belts, and off they went. Five hours later, the truck driver was driving through the heart of Sydney when suddenly he was horrified! There was the blonde walking down the street, holding hands with the two chimps, much to the amusement of a big crowd. With a screech of brakes, he pulled off the road and ran over to the blonde. "What are you doing here?" he demanded, "I gave you $200 to take these chimpanzees to the zoo!" "Yes, I know you did," said the blonde. "But we had money left over so now we're going to Sea World."

MOLONG EXPRESS, Thursday 21 September 2023
Molong Golf by the Ghost Walker On Sunday six players from Royal Molong made the trip to Blayney to contest the Central West Small Towns Shield Tournament against Wattle Flat, Blayney, Manildra, Cumnock and Yeoval. Even though none of us featured in the winners circle our combined four best scores were enough for us to retain the shield for another year. Paul Glynn 33 points, Al Evans33 points, Troy Warner 32 points and Trevor Lamb 30 points all contributed to our win with myself scoring 26 points and Stubba with 21 points failing to contribute. Stubba did however win a “nearest the pin” prize on one of the par three holes. We did have a team photo taken. One player, not wearing the team T-shirt, was obviously distracted when the photo was taken. Stubba, the mighty Manly fan, managed to wear his Sea Eagles shorts. The previous Sunday when some of us were at Cumnock playing in their Open Tournament there were 8 players at the Royal Molong Golf Course. I don’t know what event was played, probably an ambrose, or if a winner was declared but the usual mischief was taking place according to my man on the ground, Bro. Matt Philpott has a golf ball washer on his golf cart but according to Bro he has far too much soap in it and you’re lucky to find your golf ball amongst the soap suds. A while ago Bro had an operation to have a pacemaker inserted. Although his overall game wasn’t all that great he managed to hit some good fairway shots with his nice steady swing. After watching these good shots Stubba and Paul reckoned if he’s hitting those sort of shots then perhaps they should get a pacemaker. The branches on the gum tree about 50 metres in front of the thirteenth tee are having an impact on players tee shots and of course Stubba managed to hit them and lost a brand new golf ball. This Sunday is Manildra Men’s Open Tournament and it would be good to see as many Molong players as possible support this event. I guess there will be golf at Molong as usual, 8.30am for 9am. Come and join us.
Sport JUNIOR SOCCER Following Saturday’s last round of soccer for this season, Molong and District Soccer Club hosted a club presentation at the Molong RSL. A fantastic afternoon for players, coaches and their families to come together to celebrate great achievements, to thank the people who dedicate so much time to keep the club running and to acknowledge the immense effort that all our coaches put in. Each player received a gift from the club, a fantastic towel, featuring the
club logo and colours, supplied by Impact Digital. We can’t wait to see these towels out and about during the swimming season. Don’t forget to put your names on them! MDSC provided a yummy barbecue and lolly bag at the conclusion of the formalities. Thank you to our barbecue helpers, lolly bag makers, those that helped set up the room and helped organise so things would run smoothly for the presentation, and of course to Ralph and Em for all of the preparation that
went into this event, for the many weeks leading up to it. A special mention to Arthur Weir, who said a beautiful thank you to Ralph and Em, on behalf of all of the players and their families. Well done Arthur, you spoke so well. Good luck to the U12 Magpies in their Grand Final this coming Saturday. The club are so proud of you all. And finally, please come along to the MDSC AGM on the 13 October. More information regarding this will be posted on the MDSC Facebook page.
Waiting for the presentations to start.

Photographed above with his lovely wife and gifted teacher, Holly (deceased) Bill made a very worthwhile difference to the lives of students at the Molong Central School. As a science teacher in the secondary school - he brought the subject ‘alive’. His ability to bring out the best in each student, and their individual learning needs, has stayed as the most valuable lesson that has worked positively in many a career. Bill and Holly came to town as a young married couple, they raised their daughters, and were noticeably of a style of partnership and representative of family values, manners and respect that Molong kids learned and remembered. We give thanks to Bill and Holly and pray that they now rest in eternal peace. By former student Rozzi on behalf of Molong ‘kids’.
