Local town events take off

Molong grew on a tradition of town and district residents coming together in Bank /Gidley Streets on Fridays (late afternoon and night) and Saturdays to meet, be together, shop, enjoy entertainment and music, food ... and each other's company. The same was for all Cabonne Towns, Villages and Hamlets. (Yes, look it up - we do have hamlets) The good news is there is a return to this community and district tradition. Saturday 26 November will see the return of the Cudal Christmas Markets and festivites (See page 4) and on Friday 2 December an event filled Molong Christmas Shopping Night will kick off at 5 p.m.

And, what a night it will be with shops/businesses/cafes/ pubs, clubs open - music and entertainment, exhibits, displays ... and so much fun for all of the family. Just like in past times - but with today's spin. Thank you to the Molong Advancement Group (MAG), Cabonne Council with funding received through the NSW Government Reconnecting Regional NSW Community Events program. There's even more news ... There's going to be a Kid's Market for budding young entrepreneurs to show their handmade wares. Now, that's a good idea! (See page 4 for details)

Local families love that one night of the year when they can dress up in all kinds of scary outfits and head to safe places to trick or treat. Like to take part? Cabonne families and businesses are welcome to take part in this year's Molong's Halloween event on Monday 31 October. (Note: Safety rules apply) See organiser, Tracey Harvey's notice on page 14

A long time resident of the Molong community, Mrs Marie Peffer celebrated her 90th Birthday recently. A large gathering of family and friends (many from interstate) joined Marie for a lovely afternoon of celebrations. Marie shared her long time love of music by playing a number of hymns on the piano for all to join in. Her sons, Graham and Alwyn shared her life story with the guests. The day concluded with a time of catching up with family and friends, much reminiscing and enjoying a wonderful afternoon tea and time together. Many thanks to all who helped to make a day to remember. Best wishes to Marie. One of Molong’s best!

Shop Until You Drop At The Molong Christmas Shopping Night

With the Long Weekend and the markets that we could not have behind us, the focus of the Molong Advancement Group now turns to the Molong Christmas Shopping night on Friday 2 December. The Business Houses of Molong are working with MAG and Cabonne Council to bring a spectacular night of Christmas shopping to Molong. The focus of the night is the Molong Shops, Not for Profit Organisations, local musicians and activities for children. Cabonne Council is supporting the night with funding received through the NSW Government Reconnecting Regional NSW – Community Events Program. Molong shops will be open for extended hours from 5 pm supported by stalls from Molong Not for Profit organisations including Molong Early Learning Centre, Molong Central School P&C, St Joseph’s P&F, Molong Hospital Auxiliary, Molong Men’s Shed and other community groups and local artisans. A new idea for this year is a “Kids Makers Market” where the young people of Molong have the opportunity to demonstrate their talents and sell what they make. We can expect to see some outstanding paintings, jewellery and cooked and sewn items for sale!

Santa has been invited to attend and may be available for photos with children on the Village Green. The very talented photographer, Tracey Harvey has agreed to be available to take photos. To add to the party atmosphere musicians are being invited to participate and perform on the night. Cabonne Council is seeking approval to close Bank Street from the Mitchell Highway to the eastern end of Shields Lane and Gidley Street from Wildflower Café to the Coach House. Four Mile Creek Road landslip

Cabonne Council is working with geotechnical engineers to assess the extent of a landslip on Four Mile Creek Road, that has resulted in a closure of the road. The prolonged rainfall events that have taken place across the region over the last couple of weeks has resulted in approximately 40 meters of landslip, causing slumping and significant cracking of the road pavement. Cabonne Council was left with no choice but to close the road to ensure the safety of road users, as it is likely that the entire surface of the road may give way. Cabonne Council recognise the impact that the closure of Four Mile Creek Road will have on local residents, landholders, and Cadia Valley Mine staff. With the current closure of both Cadia Road, and now Four Mile Creek Road, the current detour for people accessing this area now adds up to 40 minutes of additional travel time to Orange. The General Manager of Cabonne Council, Brad Byrnes, assured those impacted by the closure that working to re-open the road is of the upmost priority for Council, with Council already

engaging specialists to work on solutions. “The unfortunate reality is Four Mile Creek Road is likely to be closed for a significant period while these works take place. Council apologises to road users for this, and sincerely asks the community for their understanding and tolerance”, said Mr Byrnes. “Safety is Council’s number one priority, given the significant risk to the general public.” Work will be commencing on Four Mile Creek Road repair next week and will likely be completed early in 2023. Council will continue to provide regular updates as work progresses.

Donato 100% committed to Orange NSW State Member for Orange Philip Donato MP has officially announced his intent to contest the NSW State election for the seat of Orange on 25th March 2023, pledging his continued commitment to serve the communities of the Orange electorate. “I continue to be 100 percent committed to serving the people of our communities here in the Orange electorate, and greater regional NSW,” said Mr Donato. First elected in a the 2016 by-election, which was triggered by the resignation of former sitting member Andrew Gee, Mr Donato shook the political world when he was voted in by a margin of just 55 votes to take the seat from the National Party, who had until then held the seat for the previous 69 years. “I’m officially announcing that I will recontest for the seat of Orange in the March 2023 NSW State election,” Mr Donato said. “I was first elected in the 2016 by-election, when I opposed the Liberal National Government’s decision at the time to ban greyhound racing without any consultation or consideration, and people have been suspicious of the Liberals and Nationals ever since - not knowing what tyrannical decision the government would make that would impact our freedoms and the lives country folk lead. “Since I’ve been elected, the Orange electorate has seen record funding and investment from the NSW Government for services and infrastructure, proving that a non-government representative has helped our community get the attention it deserves. “I’ve been proud to represent the people of the Orange electorate, and I have remained approachable, accessible and available to all those wanting to meet and discuss with me the issues affecting them and their community. “Not having to toe a government or big party line, I’ve been able to strenuously advocate for the community, without fear or favour - which

can only be achieved by not being a member of the government. “Ultimately, it will be the voters of our community to decide whether or not they want me to continue to represent them; If the community decide they want me to remain as their state representative, I’ll continue giving them 100 percent commitment to this important job, just as I’ve done for the past six years. “Being elected to represent the local community has truly been an honour, and humbling in equal measure. It’s not a job or responsibility that I have ever taken lightly, nor for granted. Whilst ever the community want me as their representative, I’ll tirelessly go into bat for them,” Mr Donato said.

View from the Hill

Government must find a way to force gas prices down – but how? Senior ministers this week have dramatically raised the stakes in the Albanese government’s face-off with gas producers, amid escalating energy prices and dire warnings of worse to come. The question now is: how does the government follow through with effective action to match the rhetoric? Bringing gas prices down in the eastern part of the country is vital in reducing the cost pressures many businesses and households are confronting. Coal and gas prices are the main drivers of soaring electricity bills. Dealing with gas prices is also important for reinvigorating Australian manufacturing, one of Anthony Albanese’s promises at the election. And, despite the opposition to gas from some environmental critics, it has a necessary role in the transition to a clean energy future and thus to the government being able to deliver on its ambitious climate policy. Shaping up as an outspoken protagonist in the current “gas wars”, Industry Minister Ed Husic this week launched a barrage of criticism at the producers. Husic accused the companies of acting in a way that “would make a locust swarm proud”, bent on an “absolutely rabid pursuit of profit above all else”. They are “sucking up an Australian resource and selling it at phenomenal prices overseas and doing so in such a way that is putting pressure on manufacturers and households in this country,” he told Sky. Husic is one of four federal ministers in the front line of trying to bring down local prices. Treasurer Jim Chalmers highlighted the issue when he told a Tuesday news conference power prices were expected to play “a bigger and bigger part” in Australia’s inflation problem in coming months. Chalmers said he, Husic, Resources Minister Madeleine King and Energy Minister Chris Bowen were working on what could be done to get gas prices down, declaring action would be taken. But to what extent all four are on the same page is a moot point. Traditionally, resources ministers are more sympathetic to producers and industry ministers speak up for the users. Thus Martin Ferguson, when resources minister in the Rudd government, opposed a Queensland plan for a gas “reservation” scheme. (Ferguson, who went into the

AAP/ Bianca de Marchi

industry after retiring from parliament, later changed his mind.) Such a scheme already operated in Western Australia. The WA policy requires LNG producers to reserve a certain proportion (15%) of their production for domestic use. The state is not part of the eastern states’ national energy market and has some of the lowest gas prices in the OECD. One wrinkle in the present ministerial mix is that King is from WA. She is charged with trying to deal with a problem that her home state, thanks to its policy setting, doesn’t have. King recently negotiated a new so-called “heads of agreement” with the gas producers. It was a light-touch deal. The companies undertook to provide enough gas in the domestic market to avoid any supply problem. But the rub is that the price at which they supply it won’t be lower than the international price. And that foreign price is very high and rising, driven by the energy crisis in Europe. The international parity price has risen from about $10 a gigajoule a year ago to about $60 for 2023. The national secretary of the Australian Workers’ Union, Daniel Walton, this week was scathing about King’s “dud” agreement. The government had a choice, Walton said. “Defend the insane super profits gas exporters are making from the Ukraine war or defend the future of Australian manufacturing and the hundreds of thousands of jobs it supports.” The government has declined to pull the “trigger” that the Turnbull administration set up to give some potential control over gas supplies in the event of export demands leaving the local market short. The trigger has never been used. This trigger allows a government to order the companies

to set aside a certain amount of gas for domestic use. But it does not go to price, which is at the heart of the present problem. The government’s challenge is how to separate the domestic market from the international price. But the options available to it are limited, and some involve hurdles too high to surmount. It has a review of the trigger under way. The mechanism could be made more flexible and fit-forpurpose by removing the long lead time required to activate it and by extending it to

include price. Another course is to strengthen the “code of conduct” that regulates standards in the marketing of gas to industrial customers. Husic said the government would examine having price factored into that code. The government has ultimate power in that it controls export licences, but to even contemplate using that threat against recalcitrants would send the worst of messages to investors. A bold option that many experts and others advocate is introducing a super profits tax on the companies. An alternative would be to change the existing petroleum resource rent tax. But they run into the same brick wall that suggestions of recalibrating the stage 3 tax cuts did – an election undertaking. The then opposition’s pre-election economic plan said “Labor is not proposing tax reforms beyond multinationals”. In recent days, Chalmers has firmly ruled out a super profits tax. An amended code of conduct and an amended trigger would seem the easiest options. Whatever is done needs to be quick and effective, but there are difficulties and no guarantees. The issue also poses a test for maintaining discipline within the government, given the contending ministerial views. Husic said: “We cannot be more clear: if these gas companies think that this is the end of the story and the heads of agreement is all done and dusted, they’ve got another [think] coming”. Strong words. It would be interesting to know what the companies will be saying to King and what King and Husic will be saying to each other as the government grapples with its next step. Cumnock - Family fun day& Market success

by Rozzi

I love any opportunity to head to Cumnock where the community is friendly, welcoming, happy and inspiring. Last Saturday was another enjoyable day in this lovely town of 491 people (2021 Census) when the community came together to hold a very sucessful family fun day and fundraiser to support their school and pre-school. Cumnock, like other same size rural towns - has suffered from decades of changing times (economic downturns, drought, rain etc). With a ‘never, ever give up’ approach past and current community volunteers have gathered, many a time, to identify survival strategies. Which is the very reason why as a small rural town - Cumnock continues to survive whilst others have fallen into further serious decline. Well done to the extended Cumnock family on achieving another success. Cumnock Public School and Cumnock Village Pre-School volunteers cooking and serving at the BBQ stand (l to r) Sally Butler, Will Reynolds, Jack Rookyard, Campbell Keen, Will Keen, Amanda Schultz, Monique Kerwick. Well done to the always willing Cumnock volunteers who “never, ever give up” on their ‘Village of the Heart’. “It takes a village to raise a child” is another proven town survival philosophy. Kids attending the local pre-school, school and sporting clubs - are well cared for and respected by the local and district community. It makes a difference.

Sandie the Nankeen Kestrel Rescued by Andrew & Irene at Gamboola

I was checking my calving Shorthorn cows a while back and a group of mainly younger cows were intently focused on something in the grass. I was thinking it might be an early-season brown snake or a drowsy lizard but on investigation, I found that it was a beautiful Nankeen Kestrel (anything but Common and the smallest of the Falcon raptors) lying on its back with bared talons and beak defending herself to dramatic and intimidating effect despite her diminutive size. Given she was obviously injured, I managed to gather her up and put her in the pocket of my coat with only minor damage to one thumb from her incredibly sharp beak, the wound being just like a small jab from a scalpel blade which I didn’t even feel until I saw the blood! Most birds in that situation would be distressed, shocked and fragile, but not her, she was one feisty little bird ready to take on all-comers. On the way home, I named her Sandie given the date was 8th August, the same day Olivia Newton-John passed and who was also a fine looking bird and a determined fighter in her later life. We kept her under a washing basket over-night and fed her some beef mince which she only nibbled at given her preference for mice but she also got a second sample of human thumb as I was getting her out of my pocket. A test-flight the next morning revealed that her right wing was still failing her and that she had no chance of flying despite no obvious injury that we could find. We rang WIRES and this was the best decision we could

have made and they have been absolutely amazing. Chelsea came and collected Sandie the next morning, had her x-rayed within 24 hours and then transferred her to the Southern Highlands Raptor Rehabilitation Clinic where she spent the next 8 weeks convalescing. Chelsea then brought her back to Gamboola for release with the hope that she would be reunited with her mate which I think I have seen several times during her absence.

The photo above shows Sandie stripped of her beautiful Nankeen plumage (a patterned cloth from the 1800’s that looks a little Kestrel-like) which is an amazing image and you can see the feather damage to her right wing from what was probably a wire-strike which also left her with ligament damage to the tip of her wing. Chelsea from WIRES said that the x-ray expert said it was like trying to x-ray a very bitey chicken which doesn’t surprise me at all. Sandie’s release went without a hitch on Tuesday morning and we can hope she is reunited with her mate and that they are continuing to savage any rodent stupid enough to expose itself to the beautiful and silent assassins hovering above. Well done WIRES, thank you Chelsea and keep up the good work.

KEY REGIONAL PROJECTS MUST CONTINUE! The new Federal Government is about to hand down its first Budget. Our local councils and community groups are nervously awaiting news on the fate of key regional projects and grants programs that are vital to the future of our country communities. Key projects that need funding include: - Orange City Council has an application in for the Orange Regional Sports Precinct for funding under the Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF) - Bathurst RSL Car Park, which is funded through the Community Development Grants Program - Dixons Long Point Crossing over the Macquarie River, which is

funded through the Roads of Strategic Importance (ROSI) - The new Charles Sturt University Rural Clinical School, which the former Coalition Government allocated $14.8 million for in the March 2022 budget. - The Bathurst Regional Training Hub, which is one of three Hubs the previous Federal Government committed $3.9 million towards. I’ve met the new Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King, and impressed on her the importance of funding the Dixons Long Point and Bathurst RSL Car Park projects. I also asked about the future of the BBRF program. It is absolutely essential that these and other vital regional projects are funded. Regional Australia deserves its fair share.

MORE FUNDING NEEDED TO FIX RAIN-BOMBED ROADS! Not only are potholes an incredibly dangerous issue that need to be tackled immediately, the road damage is also hitting our back pockets by puncturing tyres and bending wheel rims, and creating a roads funding crisis for many local council areas. The impact of the relentless rainfall is particularly being felt in country areas like ours, where local councils manage extremely large road networks. There is simply no way local councils can afford the cost of the road repairs, nor do they have the capacity in their workforce to do so. They need urgent help and it should be provided by both State and Federal Governments.

I think next week's Federal Budget is the place to do it as there’s no better time for the government to step up with more funding. The road crews of many of our local councils are stretched and exhausted. Patching is the best many councils can do right now, but this is not sustainable. Funding is urgently needed to make these roads safe again. This needs to be a national priority that crosses party lines. I call on the Federal Government to lead the way and commit to greater roads funding for the safety of road users around Australia. Our local councils need immediate assistance!

REG’S BENCH A Texan millionaire was a keen golfer so he went to his local priest to ask if there was a golf course in heaven. I don't know, said the priest. Try the Bishop, he's higher up than me. Thanks Father, said the Texan. He then visited the Bishop. Father, he said. Here's a thousand dollars for your church if you can tell me if there's a golf course in heaven. I'm not sure, said the Bishop. Only the Pope would know that sort of thing. So the Texan flew to Rome and met with the Pope. Your holiness, he said, here's a million dollars for your church if you can tell me whether there's a golf course in heaven. ' I'm not sure, myself, said the Pope, I'll get on the 'phone to the Pearly Gates. Wait here. The Pope went into his office and picked up the gold 'phone, a direct line to the Pearly Gates. Peter he said. It's John Paul. How are you? Good. Listen, I've got a man down here, Texan, Ted Thompson, wants to know if there's a golf course in Heaven ... right ... ok . right, I'll tell him. Thanks. The Pope went back out to the Texan. I've got good news and bad news, he said. What's the story asked the Texan. Well, the good news, said the Pope, is yes, there is a golf course in heaven. The bad news is that you tee off at seven o'clock tomorrow morning. A woman went to see her doctor. Doc, she said once she was in his office. You've got to help me. I've got a terrible flatulence problem - I break wind about once a minute. So I hear, said the doctor. I just can't stop, she said. It's terribly embarrassing. I see, said the doc. Tell me, how's your diet? Normal, she said.

QUICK CROSSWORD Do you get enough sleep? he asked. Yes, I do, she said. Stress? he asked. No more then usual, she replied. He sat at his desk writing notes for a moment, then left the office. He was back in a moment with a long, skinny pole with a hook on the end of it. The woman was terrified. What are you going to do with that she screamed. The doctor said: I'm opening a window, it stinks in here. A horse walked up to a bookie at Flemington and wanted to back himself. The bookmaker was astounded! The horse said: What's the matter, haven't you ever seen a talking horse before? That's not it, said the bookie, I just can't believe you think you can win' Two old army mates got together for a drink on Anzac Day. By closing time they were very drunk. They went back to the first one's house and had a few more beers. It was very late when the second bloke wondered what time it was, but he couldn't find a clock anywhere. Hey Larry, he said. You don't have a clock, mate. How do you tell the time? Larry said: With my bugle. How can you tell the time with a bloody bugle? asked his mate. I'll show ya, said Larry, and went to the window, opened it and blew his bugle loudly into the night. Then a voice yelled out: STOP that noise. Don't you know it's one-thirty in the bloody morning'

Contact one of our Landmark Tablelands Livestock team. Paul Glynn (Molong & surrounding districts) – 0428 168 638 CTLX CATTLE TUESDAY 18 October There was a significant increase in numbers and the quality was mixed. There were some good pens of yearling steers to suit the feeder buyers, along with an increased number of Bos Indicus cattle. There were some good lines of well-bred weaners to suit the restockers and almost 200, mostly heavy weight cows. It was a varied market, with heavy feeder steers and trade cattle selling to cheaper trends and heavy prime cows and young cattle returning to the paddock, selling to dearer trends. Prime vealers reached 560c/kg. Yearling steers to suit the trade, back 7c, selling from 480c to 550c and yearling heifers to process also cheaper, making from 450c to 570c/kg. Lighter feeder steers were a few cents easier and the heavy feeders were up to 16c/kg cheaper. The limited supply of feeder heifers were firm, ranging from 430c to 540c/kg.. Young cattle to the restockers were dearer. Young steers sold from 420c to 712c and

CTLX SHEEP 12 October

Numbers lifted by 600 for a yarding of 5100 lambs. It was a good quality yarding with some very good heavy weight lambs along with odd pens of well finished new season lambs. There were also fair numbers of plainer lambs showing the effects of the winter and there were good numbers of hoggets yarded. Not all the regular buyers were operating in a variable market. Trade weight new season lambs were firm to $5 dearer selling from $145 to $180/head. Trade weight old lambs were $7 to $12 dearer selling from $114 to $184/head. Heavy weight lambs were up to $20 dearer with the 24kg to 30kg lambs selling from $165 to $236/head. Lambs over 30kg sold from $242 to $255/ head. There were no Merino lambs yarded. Lambs to the restockers were $7 to $10 dearer selling from $72 to $155/head. Hoggets sold to $160/head. There were 1050 mixed mutton yarded where most grades were around firm. Merino ewes sold from $50 to $115 while crossbred ewes sold from $85 to $135/head. Merino wethers sold from $86 to $142/head.

Molong Sunday Golf Notes There were only six players at the Royal Molong golf course on Sunday where they played an eight hole two person ambrose. Due to the condition of the fairways some of the holes were played twice and hence only eight holes were played. Thanks to Scott, Kerry and Balley for mowing what fairways they could. No winner of the golf was declared but Bro reckons that Stubba and Scott Weekes were probably the winners. Scott hits a long ball but Stubba was happy to use his own shots sometimes. Bro partnered up with Evo for this event and Scott Oates with Matt P. Apparently no one’s putting was all that great. Bell was there to cook bacon and egg rolls for lunch and a big thank you from those on hand. Unfortunately the golf veterans tournament that was due to be played on the Monday had to be cancelled due to the wet weather preventing the course being prepared. Four players from the Royal Molong golf club travelled to

Binalong on the weekend for the NSW Sand Green tournament. On Friday afternoon we were lucky enough to play nine holes at the Harden golf course which has a very nice eighteen hole grass green course. For a town with a population of nineteen hundred people they have a wonderful facility with a great clubhouse and function room. On Saturday and Sunday we played the championships at Binalong which has a eighteen hole sand green course. The fairways were slow and the greens were fast with the course in good condition except at the bottom of the hills which were very wet and sloppy. Ged was the only one to trouble the scorer with a win for the lowest net score on Sunday. Paul, Al and myself weren’t in the hunt but a good time was had by all. As the saying goes ‘what happens on tour stays on tour’ so there is no more to report about the weekend. At the moment it doesn’t look promising with more rain forecast for later in the week and the weekend but with fingers crossed I’ll say golf again on Sunday, 8.30am for 9am.
