Aftermath

Connecting the Community since 1876 $2.00 inc gst

This is not a "normal" edition of the Molong Express. The Express' premises and entire contents were wiped out by the horrendous flood of 13-14 November. As were 80% of busineses in Molong's main street and surrounds. Not to mention resident's homes and community sporting and recreation facilities. We will place on record the events and stories later. You will have already seen enough photos of the destruction and debris in online and other media. reports. Later we will attempt to deal with what happens next, and what should happen, in the longer term. In the meantime, this special issue concentrates, as best we can in a short time, with the limited resources available to us, on the marvellous response of this community, its officials and citizens, to the immediate need to make-safe and clean up the devastation visited upon Molong & Cabonne. There are some heartwarming pages within. There are so many heroes to acknowledge, from near and afar, who sprang into action. We mention only a few here - but we know you are out there. The stories will keep coming. Please excuse shortcomings in layout or content quality. But it is good to be back. Enjoy your Express. Paul Mullins & Rozzi Smith

Today is the 1st day of Summer and new beginnings -

Don't Forget Christmas Shopping Night tomorrow night

Molong families gathered in Bank Street last Sunday to bring colour and Christmas cheer to the flood damaged shops and buildings. Organised by the Express, Kate Strahorn and Cass Sullivan, the children arrived with paints, brushes, and tinsel, christmas trees and baubles from their own homes to cheer up their town and as one little one said "to help bring smiles to sad faces".

Take a look at the awesome work in Bank Street with Christmas images painted on boarded up windows, the now empty shops, and flood damaged buildings. Thank you to the wonderful local children and their parents, and the many other volunteers who have helped to bring the love, colour, joy and spirit to Molong. More photos inside.

Vonnie’s special family day Rozzi Smith The sound of ‘Happy Birthday Grandma’ echoed through the Molong RSL last Sunday when the extended McKenzie clan came together to celebrate the 98th birthday of their dearly loved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend - Mrs Vonnie McKenzie. Four generations joined in the celebration for this wonderful lady who means so much to her family and friends. Listening to the voices of some 30 family members as they sang - my mind turned to the life of this beautiful woman who remembers school at the village that was, Pinecliffe. Her family, her marriage, the birth of her family, living the life of a farmer’s wife, her years of volunteering including preparing lunches at local schools, perfecting delicious sponges for many a fundraising event, and her dapper hand making loaves of bread into sandwiches for the Molong Show, National Field Days, CWA church catering, kitchen teas, weddings, birthday parties ... and times when needed. Whilst Vonnie is a modest women and doesn’t see her life as ‘exceptional’ she has made a wonderful difference to possibly hundreds++ lives of women. Like the wood stove she still lights today for her baking, Vonnie represents a life of goodness, of warm mothering, of the soil of the land, the sheep and grains grown in local paddocks for building healthy bodies and minds.

Love, respect, goodness, caring and sharing is our Vonnie. Happy 98th birthday to one of Molong and District’s beautiful ‘gems’ We all love you Mrs McKenzie. xx

With his usual (or unusual!) humour Steve and his team at H Hardware thankfully have reopened Molong’s treasured hardware store on the corner of Bank and Watson Streets after what is thought to be the town’s most devastating flood. Thankfully, the reopening is just in time for the rebuilding of both the lower areas of town - not forgetting the damage to other homes in town. Please support your local hardware store.

"Merry Christmas"

Families add colour and fund to Bank St A heart felt thank you to the families of Molong and District who responded to the call to help decorate Bank Street with Christmas colour and cheer. Bringing christmas trees and decorations from their own homes - the families headed to the flood damaged shops to add lovely touches of colour and symbols of love to help bring happy smiling faces to flood affected families, traders, and local residents and shoppers. Please take a walk along Bank Street and enjoy the painted images on the boarded up shop windows, the christmas trees and decorations in the now empty shops currently in recovery, the Christmas wreaths and lights in the trees (provided by the Molong Advancement Group MAG). This is one of the first of the community initiativee to 'Help Rebuild Molong' that have commenced with many more exciting projects coming in 2023. In the meantime the children of Molong say "Merry Christmas Molong". Please gather for Molong's Christmas Shopping Night and community celebration tomorrow night (Friday) 4pm-8pm.

“Help Rebuild Molong”

There were many tears shed when local families surveyed the destruction caused by the flood to their much loved sporting and recreation infrastructure. There stood the much loved Molong Hockey centre on the eastern side of town - where the flooded Molong Creek cut through fences, tore up the ‘turf’, and unleashed its full fury. Opposite, the much loved home of family soccer games sat within the horror of a flood like no other. The Molong Pool, barely been open for one week had filled with brown muddy water. Further along ‘the Rec.’ grounds, the ‘battle ground’ of historical footy and tag challenges - cricket competitions stood amongst the rubble. Not forgetting the Molong Bowling Club where the greens had turned brown overnight. Disaster ... Molong’s prized sporting and recreation infrastructure had been decimated. Whilst our town has many features ... the loss of the loved sporting and infrastructure areas was ... well, really hard to bare for the hundreds of families who had helped to build over the years through hard work and fundraising efforts. Modest - but highly professional and effective, there’s a wonderful group of Molong residents who work tirelessly for the town - and for each and every family, children and youth. Lucky Molong! Modest to the core - Kate Strahorn seeks no accolades. But her name pops up as a woman who works hard for the town and for the people. Kate is a

networker with contacts she can help bring together to achieve positive outcomes and results. Within no time at all - Kate and her amazing team representing Molong families had hit their smart phones and keyboards making contact with each other - and others. Out came the message “Molong is a resilient community and is banding together, but we need help to rebuild our facilities”. Setting up a Gofundme page the group have already are fast tracking to reach $100,000 to start working. With 2023 just around the corner - there is little time to ‘get cracking’ to restore the town’s sporting and recreational facilities. Sport and Recreation in Molong is one of this community’s great loves. It is a tradition that brings residents together to play, team, and achieve together. And, brings people to town who shop, eat, stay and will help to restore economic activity for all to enjoy. Consider making a donation on the GoFundMe page. This Gofundme page has been set up to help Molong get back on its feet. All donations are sincerely appreciated. If you would like to specify a specific sporting club, please include in your comments. Funding will be allocated in consultation with Cabonne Council. https://www.instagram.com/rebuildmolong/

Some Good News? It’s still happening in Molong

“Just when Molong was forging ahead...”. Add “heartbroken”, “how do we do this again ...”, “will Molong come back again” ... just some of the thoughts from those affected by the November flood - the “BIG one” that has set a new record for flood levels in Molong. Well, that’s not the good news! But enough of the “not so good news” (maybe worst possible news) as this community picks itself up, yet again, after COVID, long drought, this year’s minor flooding - dust ourselves down ... and as the song goes ... “start all over again!”.

The Stojanov family (Kim, Dave, Alize and Jamo) of Molong’s Freemasons Hotel with the marvellous dedication of Jenny (above) helping to clean and restore the pub for operation again. With a preflood booked dinner to set up for the DPI (Department of Primary Industries), and a damaged kitchen in place at the Freemasons along came the Molong Swimming Club with BBQ’s to cater for the event. Well done Molong.

Well, with climate change ... this town and community will now be standing alongside other towns and villages across flooded areas of Cabonne Country (and NSW/Qld/ Tasmania/SA) to demand new planning regimes, flood mitigation and prevention, warning alarm systems, and the implementation and review of the previous Cabonne Council Flood Mitigation consultant’s reports ... and $$’s to implement. It has to happen! Make it happen! In the meantime ...

Sarah Bone of 17 Shades will be unable to repair/rebuild her Bank Street salon this year, and maybe part of 2023. In the meantime, Sarah has set up her biz with Milly in the Freemason Hotel’s dining room. Until Christmas at least ... then ..... ??

(L) Thank you to Carmel and Kelly Boucher who have donated this lovely ‘rocking horse’ to raffle for the Molong Flood Appeal. Next door neighbours - Tori and Maisie of Lime & Stone admiring the Boucher’s (also flood victims) kind donation before popping in to the Molong Pharmacy to buy their tickets.

(Above) Kate Redfern and Sally Brazier were only weeks away (pre-flood) from opening their fabulous new Lime & Stone enterprise in Bank Street. The good news is that they are working even harder to be up and running as quick as they can. Something very special to look forward to in Molong.

Cabonne Community Christmas Shopping Night supports Events Role On Business Recovery

Cabonne community events won’t be hindered by the recent flooding which has impacted Molong, Canowindra, Manildra and Cudal, and devastated Eugowra. Whilst our communities continue to recover their resilience and community spirit continues to shine. As part of the Reconnecting Regional NSW – Community Events Program there is a range of community events coming up before Christmas throughout Cabonne both for the communities and to support the flood recovery. On Saturday, 26 November 2022, Council, and the Cudal Christmas Markets Committee worked together to deliver the Cudal Twilight Christmas Markets. The afternoon featured market stalls, food vendors, drinks, free family entertainment, live music, kids’ activities and a special visit from Santa and Mrs Claus. It’s estimated that around 1800 people attended the event throughout the evening which ran from 4-11pm. Cabonne Mayor, Kevin Beatty said “the program was originally designed to promote the social and economic recovery of regional communities, by renewing social connections and providing a revenue-boost to local businesses. Given the destruction across the region, these community events are more important than ever to assist in the rebuilding, recovery, and support of our flood affected communities.” Following on from Cudal there is still a variety

of Christmas events to support the community. • Canowindra Christmas Shopping Night – Thursday, 1 December 2022, 4-8pm • Molong Christmas Shopping Night – Friday, 2 December 2022, 5-9pm • Community Jolly Folly – Nashdale – Saturday, 10 December 2022, 3-7pm • Cargo Community Christmas Party – Sunday, 11 December 2022, 3-7pm • Yeoval Community Christmas Dinner – Saturday, 17 December 2022, 6:30-10pm • Manildra Christmas Party – Wednesday, 21 December 2022, from 6pm (Above) In September Cabonne Mayor Kevin Beatty was joined by the NSW Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, the Hon. Sam Farraway, MLC to announce that Cabonne Council has received $239,651 from the NSW Government’s $25 million Reconnecting Regional NSW – Community Events Program.

Molong has been devastated by floods in only a little over a week ago. As the community continues to recover the businesses are still forging ahead with the Molong Christmas Shopping Night on Friday, 2 December 2022. Molong Advancement Group, local business owners and Cabonne Council have joined together to create a night to remember. Funded through the Reconnecting Regional NSW – Community Events Fund. Since the events inception in 2020 the event has supported and bought Christmas cheer to Molong. Now more than ever the event is a time to dig deep and come and celebrate the resilience and commitment of the Molong

businesses and community. The night will showcase local businesses and stall holders. Between the merry-go-round, mechanical bull and a visit from Santa the kids will be entertained all evening. There will also be local food, wine and roving music. Molong Advancement Group President Peter Batten said, “Whilst the community continues to recover from the devastating floods, they have once again demonstrated their resilience and Molong Advancement Group is excited to be part of it for another year”. For further information please contact Peter Batten on 0418 292 053 or Janine Marriott on 0427 668 585.

Cudal community moves to recovery with a Twilight Christmas Market

The small Cabonne village where the values of positive community living are paramount came together last Saturday night to enjoy a Christmas themed 'get together'. With a number of residents affected by the November floods - particularly the more recent one - it was a happy night to meet and greet as the township gathered together with their neighbours from nearby properties, and other Cabonne residents. Like other towns and villages across Cabonne country - Cudal is on the move as a great place to live, particularly for families who enjoy the benefits of the local school, pre-school facilities and the freedom offered by the natural landscape. Including by the 'Boree Creek' where families can enjoy a casual picnic watching the platypi play in their natural habitat. A village to be considered for living - Cudal residents enjoy the relatively easy drive to Orange, Molong and Cowra for employment/career/shopping opportunities and are very proud of the Cordern Store enterprise in the main street that offers locally made

arts, crafts and food products operated by friendly volunteers. Nearby is the local motel - and, not just an ordinary motel. This is a great place to stay with a B&B country style and cafe. Visitors will notice a vast new building on the site where the popular local pub burnt to the ground some years ago. Rising from the ashes is a new enterprise which the locals say is something to do with horse supplies. Well that makes sense given that horses, since the town was first settled, were the only mode of transport for residents and farmers. Today, the local showgrounds feature a fabulous equestrian centre. Please take a drive and enjoy a pleasant day Cudal - and maybe a dip in the local pool. Thank you to Cudal resident Jenny Watts for sending the Express the following story and to the people who provided the photos.

"Most days, the population of the village of Cudal is less than 400. On Saturday it swelled to more than a thousand as visitors from around the state arrived to buy, sell and support the community on its road to flood recovery. The Cudal Twilight Christmas Markets attracted an abundance of stalls offering food and drink, arts and crafts, gifts and entertainment. Santa and Mrs Claus made their usual appearance, and children’s letters to Santa were entrusted to Santa’s Cudal representative and Postmistress, Jacinta. She oversaw the dispatch of 85 letters, now on their way to the North Pole. It was a celebration for the community which had connected so strongly during the emergency. Stall holders, locals and visitors were generous in their donations to the village’s flood appeal. Andrew Gee, federal member for the area, has championed Cudal and its community since the inundation, and wrote: ‘The recent storm event was devastating for Cudal, but when the chips were down, Cudal shone. If there is a positive to emerge from this devastation it’s community spirit. Community unity. Tonight it was Christmas in Cudal'. Well over 1000 people attended the Twilight Christmas Markets. It was a stunning success thanks to the hard work of the organising committee and volunteers.’ Jenny Watts

Eugowra - Heartbroken...but,"we'll rebuild our town"

The people of Eugowra had been steadily rebuilding their town to attract tourists and visitors - and to offer their town as a special place to live for families, retirees, artists, etc. With an excellent base of a natural landscape surrounded by rich farming lands this close-knit community worked together to create new garden features, a caravan stopover with powered sites, and beautiful historical buildings. The major achievement being wonderfully painted 'murals'. Bright, colourful, sensational - where artists have gathered annually to paint images of the life and times of the town, the people, and places. It has worked with Eugowra now a destination for tourists and travellers who love to view the murals. New enterprises then arrived in Eugowra ... a coffee/food sidewalk cafe, antiques and "A nine-hour drive with a ute-load of donations was something exEugowra local, Libby Hamerlock, was not only happy to do, but felt she had to do. After receiving broken messages from friends who were stuck on their roofs on that fateful day when floodwaters decimated the town, Ms Hamerock, like many others, felt she had to help somehow even from Wauchope - some 700km away. “I was messaging friends who were on their roofs and separated from family members, not knowing if they were okay or not,” she said. “I felt useless just sitting there at work and not doing anything. I had to do something.” So she put a call out on social media for donations, and in just 10 days she had received more items than from members of the community than she knew what to do with - or that would fit in her car. “We received clothing, cleaning supplies, grocery items, baby items, food from the local supermarkets, purchased and anonymously donated. One friend donated 20 packs of feminine hygiene products, she said. "People really wanted to help.” After borrowing her brother-in law’s shed to store the items (which became a drop-off location) and his

ute to deliver them, Ms Hamerock drove nine-hours from Wauchope to Eugowra to deliver the donations. With her son, Charlie, she then spent the next two nights sleeping in a swag at the Showgrounds, in order to help the clean-up, volunteer and support her friends, family and the community. “We’ve been through drought, fires and flooding too in our region, so we know what it's like, “she said. “I just wanted to let people (in Eugowra) know that they’re not alone, that other people outside of the immediate area do care, and are thinking of them.” The Wauchope local grew up in Eugowara, and has fond memories of her time at St Joseph’s Catholic school, which also suffered severe damage in the flood. She is pictured with her son Charlie and Eugowra local, Renee Welsh, (who lost her home in the flood) at the Eugowra Showground which has been the Recovery Centre for the past three weeks. Please note that the centre for donations is currently full, and any further donations for all affected communities should be made via donations management organisation, Givit, via their online platform givit.org.au" Penny Watts

gifts, the reopening of the iconic cafe on the corner adding to the story of bushrangers (Frank Gardiner and Ben Hall) and the greatest gold haul in Australia's history - the Escort Rocks robbery. When the Mandagery Creek running through the township rose to an unbelievable level in November - severe destruction occurred with homes destroyed - and sadly, the deaths of two popular town members. Heartbroken - grieving - traumatised - local residents have been heard saying "we'll rebuild our town". That's the spirit of the people of Eugowra ... but this little town that was hit the hardest, by far, in Cabonne Country will need the intervention of serious NSW and Federal Government $$$budgets for many years to come to achieve this. Penny Watts has spent many working hours helping the Eugowra community ... here is Penny's story written for the Molong Express. We thank Penny.

MOLONG EXPRESS, Thursday 1 December 2022

Town Talk

Letters I have lived in both Bank and Bett Streets experiencing life by the Molong Creek. Since 1990 (another major flood event) some 32 years ago - countless meetings have been held - and at least two consultant reports that I am aware of (March 1997 Bresher Consulting and July 2007 URS) have been tabled. It appear that from these two reports alone little has been achieved in flood mitigation. Why? I am aware that there have been significant community consultation and talking sessions after each Molong Creek flood with those affected keen to give their opinions and to be heard. Overall, expensive consultants reports may have been of value in flood mitigation outcomes. But can I say that those affected by these floods both major and minor - the residents at the 'grass roots level' have not really been heard. The Molong Railway Bridge crossing the Molong Creek (adjacent to the caravan park) has been of concern to surrounding residents since the bridge was changed back in the 1970's. Residents have been keen to have their solutions heard since and during the planning redesign stages. Why not? The less formal railway bridge (Wellington side of town) has always been considered to be a problem for the positive flow of the smaller streams as they gather and find their own path through the township. It's not only the Molong Creek that has claimed victims during flood/high periods of rainfalls. Surface water throughout town has been a serious problem for many a resident in all areas of the town and outskirts. From the hills to the lower Molong residential and business areas, sporting fields etc. It is time for Cabonne Council and the Molong community to review the 'shelf copies' of consultant's reports regarding flood mitigation in Molong. And, to 'fast track' on the ground outcomes to protect the lives and earning power of residents. And, for the NSW State Government and Commonwealth Government to provide significant $$$'s to get the ball rolling. On another point ... where are the reports of the current Cabonne Council's Molong Flood Mitigation committee? When have they met? What are they doing? Where do they advertise their meetings? Or, is this just a 'bums on seats' response response? Molong could easily flood again given the long range weather reports. I doubt that affected residents and shop owners would have the energy to 'start all over again'. Will Molong decline? Or die? It's up to Cabonne Council and the NSW State Government and Commonwealth Government to get moving - fast - and address flood mitigation from the creek, to the smaller streams, residential areas playing fields etc. In the meantime I suggest fast tracking an alarm trigger/siren in town response somewhere between Lake Canobolas and the Molong Dam where water levels can be determined. And, the residents downstream can be alerted in time. With respect to all Helen Nesbitt, Molong

by Rozzi

One of the positives of the recent BIG flood and the series of smaller ones this year has been in seeing traders and the wider community (including from surrounding properties and nearby towns ... and visitors) coming together hopping in to clear buildings, homes and businesses of mud/water soaked damaged belongings. True Molong spirit - true community spirit - thank you for the care, love, and amazing help. During the past couple of weeks - new residents to town have hopped in to help their community and town. The Express intends to add an extra column in next year's issues to welcome new residents to town. Perhaps we will be able to introduce regular "welcome to Molong" community BBQ's and say hello to the growing number of new residents in town? Have the platapus family returned to the creek down by the pool and walkway? Keep an eye out and please let us know at the Express. Rozzi's plants - seedlings of Petunias, other florals, tomatoes, all kinds of summer vegies were washed away by the flood - and hopefully will have settled all the way down to the Rec. grounds creating edible/pretty gardens along the banks. "I'd love to see that happen" said Rozzi. Well done to Kate Strahorn and the Molong Hockey Club for bringing 'Sunrise' to town after the flood. Thank you also to the RRT (Rapid Response Team) and Bunnings who provided delicious bacon and egg rolls, warm and cold drinks for the morning breakfast event. And, to the crowd who came along to show their support. RRT (Rapid Response Team) - Thank you to the wonderful RRT team for providing food and drinks during the flood clean up and after. Molong is extremely grateful to the members of the Brethren who give so much love, payers and help to the Molong and district communities. Go Fund Me ... thank you to the organisers of one of the fundraising events. The first being to help rebuild the sporting facilities e.g Hockey centre, Hunter Caldwell Park, Molong Rec. During these times it is hard to know where to start first to rebuild. However, the Express is supporting the idea of starting with the sporting facilities in town used both kids and adults and visiting teams. All of Molong sporting facilities have brought large numbers of visitors to town who head to local food outlets, shops, accommodation etc. Let's 'Help to Rebuild Molong' with this first Go Fund Me initiative and the $$'s that Cabonne Council, NSW State Budget/Federal Budgets can seek.

Some say "flood mitigation first" - Express says 'Yes' Others say restoration of CBD area - Express says 'Yes' - Council buy-backs - Yes again. But remember that each relates to different State and Commonwealth $$budgets. Let's go for it Molong! Great to see IGA open again so quickly. The new floor layout looks tremendous. MOLONG EXPRESS, Thursday 1 December 2022

Kane Bird Police express their appreciation for public assistance at Molong and Cudal over recent times. The Molong Station is waiting to be repaired but Policing services are not impacted with officers working from Sector

stations of Cudal, Manildra and Cumnock. Phones are diverted to Orange Police or 000 in an emergency. Upcoming Christmas and New Year double demerits period from 23/12/2022 – 2/1/2023, targeting Speeding, mobile phones, seatbelts, and motorbike helmets offences.

Molong Advancement Group AGM

Molong Advancement Group had a very successful meeting on 10 Novembe with 17 people fronting up to the meeting at the RSL with a few new faces from business & community which is great to see and a refreshing change. Little did we know what was to follow in the next few days! The following positions were filled: President, Peter Batten; Vice President, Ralph Chrystall; Secretary, Janine Marriott; Assistant Secretary, Madison Jeffries; Treasurer, Sue Wild, Public Officer, Sue Wild; Publicity Spokesperson, Peter Batten; Promotion & Marketing Officer, Madison Jeffries; Market Co Ordinator, Madison Jeffries. The saying ‘if you want a job done, ask a busy person’ which holds true in the case of Madison Jeffries with volunteering her time in 3 positions, plus having a role on Cabonne Council & a busy mother as well. New to MAG it’s good to see some younger members of the community step up to be counted & with Ralph Chrystall second in command things are looking up! MAG may contain a few dinosaurs of which I am one, so we need a few younger members to step up & carry the load which they have done well in the clean up after the flood. Mother Nature is a force to be reckoned with as Molong found out recently & with all the problems

Molong is keeping sport facilities high & dry we hope to be able to help. Please read the Chairman’s Report (see next week) to see what MAG has achieved this year. One of the items on the agenda for the November meeting for the next few years was to upgrade Hunter Caldwell sporting area. MAG had been asked by the Soccer Club to help fund plans for the upgrade which we were only to willing to help with. Now it looks as though we need to go further & plan a whole new sporting precinct in a non flood prone area. So hoping to hear from those interested in supporting this idea & let us know if & how we can help. We needed to know the flood prone area on Hunter Caldwell & Mother Nature has showed us exactly what she could do. Perhaps in the long run a good thing if a new sporting precinct comes to fruition. Cabonne Council & MAG intend to go ahead with the Flood Recovery Christmas Shopping Night as we ‘need a little Christmas’, & our business houses & those affected by the flood need our support. So we hope to see as many locals & not so locals support the night. Still some wonderful shops remain & local food & wine to be had. MAG wish the community the Best Christmas possible under the circumstances & a covid, flood free New Year.

STREET STALL 2nd December, 8am - 8pm Be part of the Christmas Markets in Molong Donations of cooking & saleable goods is appreciated Wall Art Raffle tickets on sale for $5 and drawn that night @ 8pm Local native pine Christmas trees on sale and orders taken

The GrowMolong street Stall at the Christmas Markets is still on and we want to draw our Wall Art Prints that survived the floods. This has been an ongoing campaign to install the 6 Defibrillators in Sporting venues in Molong and funded up to 50% by the NSW Office of Sport, St John Ambulance and GrowMolong as an community health initiative. RECOVERY STARTS AFTER DEVASTATION ACROSS OUR REGION The floods in the Central West have been absolutely devastating and heartbreaking. There has been tragic loss of life. All around our region, people have lost homes and livelihoods. The rebuilding process is going to take years and, without a doubt, we will need a full suite of disaster assistance in this area. Some of the police officers who worked in Lismore during the flooding in Northern NSW earlier this year have told me that the devastation in Eugowra is worse than that. As we do best in times of hardship, our communities have come together to help each other out. Men and women from the community as well as from the SES, RFS, Fire and Rescue, the ADF, the Ambos, Police, the Rapid Relief Team and many others worked around the clock to help keep us safe, rescuing those in the direct line of the rising waters, putting their lives on the line to save others, providing food, shelter and a helping hand to clean what’s left of shops and homes. Our communities are extraordinarily grateful for your service and kindness and we cannot thank you enough! I was on the ground in Molong the morning after the storm and what I saw was unimaginable. I chipped in with the clean up in the hardware store and the IGA with many others who were doing the same thing. And then the stories of the tragedy unfolding in Eugowra started to come in. I’d like to make special mention of Phil Hunter who, in his leadership role with the RFS, spearheaded the response on the ground in Molong. Later that day I visited Cudal and then hitched a ride on an SES truck into Eugowra that evening. I’ve been on the ground every day since, working with my local RFS Brigade to hose and shovel out mud in the Cabonne area. In Eugowra, one in every five residents was rescued by boat or helicopter and over 90% of homes in Eugowra have been damaged or destroyed. It’s hard to fathom the severity of the damage. It is truly devastating. In Molong, the destruction has been shattering. Homes, businesses and infrastructure ruined. The Molong Hockey Field that we worked so hard to fund is a washed out wreck! I am pleased to see though, after an enormous clean up effort, that Kent's Hardware store and the IGA are open again and more shops are back up and running every day. While the flooding has been horrific, the kindness of the community has been more than heartwarming. I can’t speak highly enough of everyone who has helped or made a donation. It is much appreciated. With the help of our communities, I know that we will get through. In the days, weeks, and months to come, we will stand by you. We will need all of the assistance we can get, from both levels of government, on the double. Pictured above left - Andrew washing out a flood damaged house at Eugowra with the RFS. MOLONG CHRISTMAS SHOPPING NIGHT POSSIBLE THANKS TO ALL OUR LOCAL HEROES Last Friday I stopped by Molong and caught up with James Brazier (pictured left) who was busy rebuilding Lime and Stone's new digs in Bank Street. It's a massive job! It's terrific to see the progress of all the Molong businesses as they clean up and repair the damage caused by the devastating flood and I congratulate everyone involved in the recovery effort! How amazing is it that the shopping night can be held so soon after such devastation!

FEDERAL MEMBER FOR CALARE MOLONG EXPRESS BACK UP AND RUNNING

I caught up with the Molong Express's hard working co-owner - Paul Mullins last week. Devastatingly, he and partner Rozzi Smith lost both their home and the Molong Express office in the recent floods. But he is determined not to let the Express fold after 150 years of publications. Paul took me through the terrifying night of the storms, the hard road to recovery and how Molong is moving forward. I am so glad the Express is out again this week! The community is with you, Paul and Rozzi! Pictured - Andrew with Paul Mullins in his house at Molong

SPECIAL FLOOD RECOVERY FUND NEEDED ASAP We welcomed the Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as well as Federal and State Ministers to Eugowra during the last fortnight. Their visits were an opportunity for them to see first-hand the devastation caused by recent flooding to homes, businesses and farms and to understand how crucial ongoing financial support will be to ensure residents and business owners can get back on their feet.

This week I have written to both Senator Murray Watt, the Federal Minister for Emergency Management and Steph Cooke, the State Minister for Emergency Services and Resilience and Flood Recovery, calling for the establishment of a special flood recovery fund, the Cabonne/Wellington Reconstruction Fund, specifically for the Cabonne Shire and Wellington district to assist the hundreds of people left with damaged or uninhabitable homes as a result of the tragedy, as well as local businesses and farms. Both levels of government jointly funded an $800 million Northern Rivers Resilient Homes Fund Package to help the 2,000 homeowners in flood-prone areas of the Northern Rivers repair, raise, retrofit or voluntarily participate in a home buy-back scheme after that flooding disaster earlier this year. Now unfortunately it’s our turn. We urgently need the Cabonne/Wellington Reconstruction Fund established to support homeowners, business owners and farmers in the Cabonne Shire and Wellington district who have lost homes or experienced considerable damage to their properties, businesses or farms. Eugowra bore the brunt of the November flood destruction in the Cabonne Shire, but Molong, Canowindra, Cudal and Manildra also sustained considerable damage, as did Wellington. Homes and businesses were inundated, and livelihoods destroyed overnight. Many Eugowra residents are now homeless and relying on the assistance of others to house them in surrounding towns and volunteers to assist in the mammoth clean-up effort. With regard to housing,

we need both levels of government to urgently transport modular homes to the region to provide secure, temporary accommodation in the hometowns of all those displaced by the floods. Most in Eugowra were insured but were asked to pay excessive insurance premiums for flood coverage of between $30,000 and $40,000 per annum. It was simply unaffordable. Many locals are now battling the country’s insurers to claim benefits to help them repair or rebuild, with most being offered payouts of only a few hundred dollars. Put bluntly, these residents and families have simply been left with nothing. I believe the establishment of the Cabonne/Wellington Reconstruction Fund will be absolutely instrumental in the long-term recovery of these communities. I have spent more than two weeks on the ground in Eugowra, Molong, Canowindra, Cudal and Manildra assisting the community with the initial disaster response. These communities are hurting and need more help immediately. I welcome the $50,000 Flood Recovery Grants for eligible businesses and nonprofit organisations hit by the floods. However, more is going to be needed to get our Cabonne businesses back on their feet. For homeowners and their families, the $1000 Disaster Recovery Payment for adults and $400 for children is simply not enough to help those who have lost homes, possessions, livelihoods and loved ones. Many Eugowra residents are being transported more than 100 kilometres to and from the town each day by community members who have offered shelter and transport to assist those left homeless. Modular homes for displaced residents would be a major way of assisting our communities. Eugowra is an extremely resilient, tight-knit community and we need to ensure the residents are close to home as they undertake the unenviable task of re-building their lives. I urge the Federal and State Governments not to waste any time in establishing the Cabonne/Wellington Reconstruction Fund including, but not limited to substantial financial assistance for residents, businesses and farms, and the provision of modular homes to the Cabonne Shire.

A HEARTWARMING STORY IN A TIME OF TRAGEDY AND SORROW This is the amazing story of Ed the sheep. Ed joined John and Julie Dukes in Eugowra 8 years ago. Life’s been good to Ed but, unfortunately when the wall of water hit Eugowra recently, Ed was in the direct path. Nobody quite knows how he managed it, but Ed paddled hard and somehow kept his head above water. Residents reported seeing him paddling downtown in the area of the butcher shop. And then nothing. When I spoke to John the day after the flood, he told me that he thought Ed had been lost. Then it all changed. Just over 24 hours after the last sighting of Ed, the firies reported finding a live sheep pinned by some debris in the shop that sells second hand and vintage furniture. In a very lucky twist of fate the doors of the shop had burst open and Ed had been swept inside. The firies freed Ed, and he seemed to be uninjured. They noticed that he seemed friendly. And you’d have thought Ed would have been pretty grateful right? Maybe not so much. Ed is known to choose his friends very carefully and when the firies started trying to pat him Ed was having none of it and started head butting

them! That’s gratitude for you! It’s not easy being a firie sometimes. After Ed had finished with the firies, he simply made his way through the CBD under his own steam, hung a left when he got to the museum, went round the back, and from there got himself home in no time. He even did some quality grazing on the way through! He baa-d a big g’day to let the family know he was back home and then had a well-earned siesta in the sun! When I got to meet Ed, I fortunately didn’t get a head butt. At best it was indifference as Ed focused on dinner but it was a very different story with my Media Advisor Sinéad who was taking his photo. He took a shine to her right away and seemed to like getting his picture taken too! Since our first meeting I have caught up with Ed a few times and he is always far more interested in a pat when the camera is out! I’d like to salute Eddie and his incredible tale of survival. He has made us smile when there hasn’t been much to smile about! He’s a big sheep with an even bigger personality!

Sunday Golf Notes

Nothing feels “normal”. But we are so lucky to have so many wonderful volunteers keeping us going. The emergency supermarket has been a lifesaver for many. Thank you to the team at the RSL. John Hale , Lyn Maxwell, Tanya, Mary Mulhall and all volunteers rebuildmolong photo

Unfortunately with the slightly warmer weather and the moist soil it hasn’t taken long for the fairways to get a bit long again and our volunteers can’t be out mowing all the time. Michael was at it again this week. He lost two balls on the first hole and then put his tee shot over the fence on the seventh. His playing partners tried to tell him what he was doing wrong but it didn’t help. Then his playing partner Matt hit the branch in front of the eighth tee. Beau on the other hand managed to chip one into the hole from about thirty feet off the green on one of the holes.

Sunday 20 November saw seven players for golf at Royal Molong where a nine hole ambrose event was played. The winners were Scott and the Ghost Walker. Thanks especially to Scott and Kerry for all the time they have spent mowing. The fairways, the rough and the greens are looking great. Thanks also to anyone else who has spent time working out on the course. There was almost a club throwing occurrence but the player held back for fear of it making the golf notes. Michael Philpott hasn’t been playing with us for very long but is already playing “trick “ shots. For example, on the eighth tee his attempted drive hit the sponsor’s board beside him and almost cleaned him up with the ricochet but he’s having fun anyway. Someone managed to hit the branch off the eighth tee as usual. Sunday 27 November saw double the number of players from the previous week at Royal Molong for another ambrose event over twelve holes. Beau and the Ghost Walker were the winners this week with two teams in a tie for second place.

Al was stopped by the police at around 2am last week and was asked where he was going at that time of the night. Al replies “I’m on my way to a lesson about alcohol abuse and the effect it has on the human body and about staying out late.” The officer asks “Really? Who is giving a lecture at this time of the night.” Al replies “That would be my wife.” Golf again on Sunday, 8.30am for 9am. All welcome.
