1/4 of Molong residences washed out by the November flood were at the Molong Caravan Park
(Above) Ken Harvey, Jason Drew and Greg Smith are residents of the Molong Caravan Park. Along with 3 others their former homes represent a quarter of individual residences washed out by the wave of water that hit Molong last Nvember. Cabonne Council no doubt has its hands full dealing with the aftermath of the storm, which affected most of Cabonne Shire including the towns of Molong, Cudal, Manildra and hard hit Eugowra (and their van parks). Restoration of these facilities needs to be accorded due priority - not only for the residents themselves, who have had to make temporary arrangements elsewhere, but to aid the recovery of the town centre. Molong's park is in a unique position - right on the highway and a stone's throw from the CBD. The park is popular with regular tourists and visitors who love the shady trees, and the close proximity to the local shops and services. "We see dozens of visitors every week set-up and then head on foot to Bank Street for meals and shopping", said Greg Smith. "It works for the town". Unfortunately, the park has been closed to residents, visitors and tourists over the summer months and school holidays - and still remains closed. What are Cabonne Council's plans? Town Talk by Rozzi and contributors
We’re glad to be back in town after a restful holiday over Christmas. Well, glad to be back ... but enormously worried, about the future like other home/property/business owners in town and district currently working through the process of insurance claims. With the east coast of NSW (and now Qld) suffering the impact of La Nina in 2022 - we understand insurance companies are being hammered with claims for those lucky enough to have been able to afford insurance cover for their properties and contents. It might be a wise idea if we now band together, as a whole community/town and talk about the best way forward for future insurance cover. More voices standing together holds more weight than individual ones can achieve? For the non-insured homeowners ... check out the NSW Gov $20,000 grant for return to home; and business owners the small biz grant. Good to see local residents, business owners and traders, school teachers, farmers, graziers, council employees taking a holiday after the ‘year that was’. 2023 will herald the year of ‘hard yakka’ with much work to be done by all of us working together to rebuild Molong. Not forgetting Cudal,
Eugowra, Canowindra ... and every town and village, road etc across Cabonne Country. Let’s go Cabonne ... and make a difference to where we live. Molong is sad to see the passing of residents, at any time. The past few months has been no exception for the grief experienced with the passing of former resident, Barry Lidster, Mrs Godden, Mrs Mallon, the much loved Lorna Boucher, and this week, Pete Davis (little Pete of Betts Street), and one of Molong’s greatest school teachers Tony Oswald (1960’s/70’s) husband of Jenny (nee McMahon). See P.14.
Activity at the Bowlo
No clubhouse (yet) but the Molong Bowling Club can boast the best playground after Ric and his team from Forbes erected this amazing timber structure last week. Well done to President, Chris Beatty and his team who sought the grant last year before the November flood. Thanks to Macca, Narelle and members the greens are now looking good - and we hear the insurance assessors have been in town
Molong Museum ..Keep an eye out With the fantastic events coming up in Molong it might be easy to overlook the awesome exhibition of early Molong taken through the very clever lens of Tilbrook. Currently being put together by Julie Lawrie and Jan McIntyre this exhibition is ...GREAT! Don’t miss out. Membership to the Museum is OPEN.
The good news ... The lovely Harriet (Sippin Nutrition) is returning to Bank Street with her delicious energy drinks. Carolyn (Caneware) will be back this week after a much deserved holiday. Meanwhile Express is still considering options for a return to Bank Street. OPEN:SummerHouse, Jane’s Florist/Gifts/Coffee; Wildflower;wsagency/ Post Office; Molong Stores; Telegraph Hotel; Molong RSL; Bella Hair; BP; H Hardware; IGA; Reggie’s Meats; NRMA/ Credit Union; Suki; Pharmacy; HealthOne; Cabonne Council; Molong Motel; Almost ... Freemasons Hotel - more news soon.
Ghost Town? One would think so for those travelling on the Elvis train (and others) through this important ‘gateway’ to Molong.
helping with claims for the restoration of the clubhouse. Something to look forward to returning to Molong.
The Express roving reporters, Steven and Leslie-Ann enjoyed chasing the Elvis train from Sydney filled with Elvis and Priscilla look alikes. On their way to Parkes ... for the annual Elvis Festival - one can only imagine if this train could actually stop in Molong - or Manildra - and the welcome both towns would be happy to give to add to the Parkes experience? Well, hopefully Manildra Railway Station might have looked a lot better than poor old Molong Railway Station for the passing tourists. For any kind of train stopover actually. NSW Government? Cabonne Council? You’re really letting us down with the state of the much loved Molong Railway Station. Mowing, pruning, cleaning, beautification needed. Community use, tourist train stopover, are all
high on the list of Molong’s tourism development/ attraction needs. Anyone listening? Any news? Hey Cabonne Council - your community is ready to go...and looking forward to being part of the decision making for the future use of this marvellous historical icon. Didyago? To the 2023 Elvis Festival “it was amazing” said Steven and Leslie Ann (Express roving photographers).

Let’s get communicating Last year, like every year, many residents sought our help or opinion on just about every topic of local concern. Fair enough, being the local newspaper we often had a lot of info at our fingertips. Many questions about what is happening (or not) in Molong and other areas of Cabonne Country need to be referred to Cabonne Council’s management team. Many readers are unsure as to how to approach Council or raise issues of wide community interest. The Express figures that the best way is to provide regular space in weekly issues to provide reader questions ... and to ask Council for advice and information on the issues that residents raise with us. Here are this week’s questions - gathered over the holiday break. We feel assured that Cabonne Council management will return answers which we will print in next week’s issue. In the meantime, if you see Paul or Rozzi around ... give us your question (verbally or via 0448 231 180 or molongex@bigpond. net.au).
Q1: Where is the Council up to with the clearing of the debris and sediment deposits along the Molong Creek, Mandagery, Boree left behind from the November 2022 flood. Q2: What active plans does Council have about ensuring flood mitigation to better protect the future of Cabonne townships/villages/farming lands located along the Molong Creek, Mandagery Creek, Boree Creek, Bell River (and any other smaller streams). Please advise of Council’s works programs and starting dates. Q3: How did the overflow of the Molong Dam and Lake Canobolas affect the November flood in Molong? Q4: The Molong Creek Railway Bridge is considered to be one of the problems of the Molong Creek floods - and has been since it was rebuilt in the 1980’s. What role did Cabonne Council (or Molong Council) have in giving approval of the NSW State Railways design/building decision? Q5: Is the rumour true that the Molong Creek was diverted to accommodate the building of the railways through town - and when flooding today returns to its old path i.e. from East Molong through lower Bank Street to the Rec. grounds?
Q7: What is Council planning to do throughout Molong to better collect the surface water which floods homes/buildings in other areas of town? Q8: What is Council planning to do to better protect the safety of the Molong community from absent landlords e.g. the current flood damaged state of the Western Stores building. Will Council be talking with the owners of the building about demolition? When? Note: The posts holding up the awning over Bank Street pedestrian area were placed as a temporary measure. How long is temporary? Is this awning guaranteed by Council to be safe? Is the building guaranteed by Council to be safe? Q9: Why is it taking a significant amount of time to a) Improve the Molong Water Supply. b) Repair roads c) Implement the findings of the various consultants employed over the years to conduct Molong Creek flood mitigation recommendations? Q10: What promises/pledges have the NSW State Government and Federal Government visiting politicians provided when they visited Molong and other towns in Cabonne after the November floods? Has Cabonne Council management followed up on these promises/pledges?
Q6: What is Council planning to do about the constant flooding of lower Bank Street via obvious inadequate stormwater/surface collection system in place? And, the backing up of the waters of the Molong Creek through places like Allen McMahon park which causes the minor flooding and building/shop damage - constantly?
Q11. What is the status of the Main Street enhancement plan?

The ‘forgettables’: 5 Australian prime ministers you may not know much about The idea of a “forgotten prime minister” may seem laughable. For Australian historians, it is the governed rather than the governors who need rescuing “from the enormous condescension of posterity” as the English historian E. P. Thompson famously put it. Our First Nations histories especially were for too long silenced and concealed in what the anthropologist Bill Stanner called a “cult of forgetfulness practised on a national scale”. Prime ministers, on the other hand, are stitched into the tapestry of national history thanks to extensive newspaper coverage, the dogged pursuits of political biographers, and the quest of archivists and librarians to collect their personal papers. Deceased leaders’ names adorn buildings and streets, federal electorates, and dedicated research centres, and in Harold Holt’s case, a memorial swimming pool. But some, of course, are better known than others. So which prime ministers, if any, can be considered “forgotten” by contemporary Australia? And what does that act of forgetting reveal about our political culture? Commemorative rituals and opinion surveys suggest that some have very much receded from memory. Here are a few prime ministers who deserve to be a little better known.
Edmund Barton 1901-03
Barton was a hugely significant figure in his day. A leading advocate of federation, he was summoned by the GovernorGeneral Lord Hopetoun (after a false start) to form the first Commonwealth government. Between 1901 and 1903, Barton’s government, with the dynamic Alfred Deakin as its attorney-general, established some of the national institutions we now take for granted, such as the public service and the High Court. Barton and Deakin’s deeply racial vision of a White Australia was also enacted in legislation in these years. Australia’s first prime minister (known to detractors as Tosspot Toby) helped to establish the machinery of federal government out of nothing. But this earned him no special place in Australian collective memory. Resigning in 1903, he spent the remainder of his life as a reticent statesman and High Court judge.
George Reid 1904-05
Reid was a political opponent of Barton’s. The defining issue of the early Commonwealth was tariff policy, and all other matters – industrial development, employment, and individual liberty – were
refracted through the “tariff question”. Reid, a former New South Wales premier who had earned the moniker “Yes-No Reid” for his prevarications during the earlier federation debates, was a devout advocate for and leader of the Free Trade movement. Reid was summoned to form a government in August 1904. Hamstrung by his lack of a parliamentary majority, he remarkably passed the Conciliation and Arbitration Bill. This was core business for the early Commonwealth, and two previous ministries had failed to secure it. But Reid’s attempts to settle the tariff question with Deakin’s Protectionists failed, and his ministry was defeated in parliament in July 1905.
Joseph Cook 1913-14
Out of office, Reid and his Free Trade colleague Joseph Cook played a crucial role in making the two-party system that endures today. Whatever their differences with Deakin and the protectionists, Reid and Cook (himself a former Labor MP in New South Wales) saw the rising Australian Labor Party as the real enemy. Reid travelled the country establishing anti-socialist leagues and building the groundwork for a united anti-Labor Party. When the tariff schedule was finally settled in 1908, and the mutual animosity between Deakin and Reid seemed the only barrier to a Liberal fusion, the latter sacrificed himself and resigned so that the former could join forces with Cook on his own terms. In 1913, Cook led the new Commonwealth Liberal Party to a federal election, winning by the narrowest of margins. He oversaw the opening weeks of the Great War the following year, committing 20,000 Australian troops and the Australian Navy to Britain, but soon lost power in Australia’s first double dissolution election.
Stanley 1923-29
Melbourne
Bruce
After the war, the task of national leadership fell to Stanley Bruce, a young businessman and ex-serviceman from Melbourne. In 1923, as leader of the non-Labor forces (now reconstituted as the Nationalist Party), Bruce formed government with Earle Page’s Country Party (forerunner of today’s rural National Party). In doing so, Frank Bongiorno has recently explained, Bruce and Page ‘inaugurated the Coalition tradition on the conservative side of Australian federal politics’. Bruce’s government was ambitious for Australia in the “roaring ‘20s”. He
envisioned a future underscored by British migrants, British money and imperial markets. In power for six years, he presided over the creation of the Loans Council and the federal parliament’s move from Melbourne to Canberra in 1927. But like others before him, he came unstuck on the issue of centralised arbitration. His attempt to abolish the federal arbitration court (with a view to restraining wage growth) saw his government defeated and his own seat lost in the 1929 election.
Arthur Fadden 1941
In the early 1930s, conservatives once again reorganised in the form of the United Australia Party, and dominated politics for the ensuing decade. But by 1941, after two years of wartime leadership, the young leader Robert Menzies appeared to falter. His colleagues disliked his brisk manner and the public lacked confidence in his government’s war efforts. A hung parliament after the 1940 election, in which two Independents held the balance, confirmed this. With his position untenable, Menzies resigned in August 1941 and the coalition unanimously chose Fadden, the Country Party leader, to replace him. “Affable Artie” was a widely respected figure and apparently the only one who could hold together a decade-old government too consumed by infighting to meet the demands of the moment. His premiership lasted just 40 days, at which point the Independents offered John Curtin and Labor their support. The sole Country Party leader to become prime minister on a non-caretaker basis, Fadden was one of a small handful of men to lead the nation in a global war.
Australia and Its Forgettables
Why is it that these five prime ministers are largely absent from national memory? Four factors seem particularly significant. First, contemporary Australian political discourse offers only a shallow sense of history. Political reporting rarely reaches for historical depth, and when it does, the second world war tends to be the outer limit. Moreover, when Australians are asked to rank their prime ministers and select a “best PM”, they rarely reach beyond living memory. The federation generation, overshadowed by the first world war, fare especially poorly. In the 1990s, with the centenary of federation fast approaching, surveys revealed that Australians knew less about its federal founders than they did about America’s 'founding fathers’.
What kind of country, the civics experts implored, could forget the name of its first prime minister? Tosspot Toby was no match for Simpson and his donkey. Second, Australians prefer to think of their political history in terms of heroes and villains (often embodied by the same individuals). Those binary roles require gregariousness, dynamism, some controversy, and the occasional serving of larrikinism. “Tall poppy syndrome” notwithstanding, partisan heroes like Menzies and Gough Whitlam, or infamous rats such as Billy Hughes, make for easy storytelling. The forgettables are more often reserved, restrained or even polite characters. The Primitive Methodist Joseph Cook was “[s]olemn and humourless”. The patrician Bruce was judged “too aloof and reserved to be an Australian”. And Frank Forde, in his old age, maintained that all of his colleagues and opponents had been “outstanding” and “capable men” for whom he had only “friendly feeling”. This is not exactly the stuff of masculine political legend. Alfred Deakin has tended to absorb the historical limelight and cast long shadows over his contemporaries, not least because he furnished historians and biographers with rich personal papers. (Barton scrupulously destroyed most of his). But as Sean Scalmer has argued, we ought not to overlook the influence of Deakin’s contemporaries in the making of Australian politics as we know it. Third, prime ministers are rendered immemorable if they were judged to be temporary, or presiding over some kind of interregnum. Australians have valorised the longevity and stability of Menzies and Howard, or the sense of epochal change that accompanied Whitlam and Hawke. Men like Reid, Cook and Fadden seem transitory in comparison. Fourth, public memory has often depended on the sponsorship of major parties and their affiliated scribes and institutes. The corollary is that those who preceded the two-party system are harder to commemorate. Labor has been excellent at proselytising its great leaders and their great reforms, and demonising the rats and renegades. The Liberal Party, on the other hand, has struggled to memorialise its antecedents and influences (Deakin perhaps excepted). Menzies and Howard predominate in the collective Liberal psyche, and Liberal forerunners from Barton to Bruce rarely get a look-in. (theconversation.com)

Please be careful on the roads. Lots of people are drinking heavily at the moment and allowing their wives to drive. Picked up a hitch-hiker the other day, the guy said to me ” I’m glad you stopped, but you do know i could be a serial killer” i said, “what’s the chances of two serial killers in one car” I don’t understand why banks get so upset when you can’t repay a loan. They already knew I had no money when I came to borrow the money. Starting to sweat and feel really sick every time I go to put fuel in my car. I think I might have car owner virus. When I was a kid I could go to the shop with $1 and get crisps, chewing gums, icecream, and a fizzy drink. Nowadays they have CCTV everywhere.

QUICK CROSSWORD
REG’S BENCH The Martians have landed on Earth, and in meeting the world leaders, they have an audience with the Pope. The Pope looks at them and asks, "Do you know Jesus?" The Martian replies, "Oh, Jesus? Great guy! He comes and visits our planet twice every year!" The Pope is astonished! It's been close to 2000 years since he was here and we're still waiting on his second coming." The Martian thinks for a moment and says, "Maybe he doesn't like your chocolate." The Pope looks at him and says,"Chocolate?" "Sure! Every year, we gather up all the chocolate from the best manufacturers, and give it to him as a gift because he's such a great guy! What did you do to him when he showed up?"

Saturday 11 February at a venue to be confirmed. The competition proper commences this Saturday 21 January. Lyndhurst V Cudal at Lyndhurst Oval Canowindra v Magpies at Canowindra Country V Millthorpe at Hunter Caldwell Oval. Due to time constraints the competition will play just one round (5 matches, each team play each other once). Due to the extraordinary circumstances thrown at us this season, the executive have decided all six teams will compete in the finals. After meeting with Cabonne Council in December it is highly unlikely any matches will be played at the Rec, Molong this season due to ongoing flood damage issues. The two Molong teams will play their home matches at Hunter Caldwell. The finals format will be the highest ranked team will have a home final.

Molong Sunday Golf Notes Welcome to another year of jibba-jabba from the Royal Molong golf course where my truth may not be the real truth but hey, I’m the one writing this gibberish so surely it’s ok to embellish the truth for the sake of the story and to make some players cringe. Golf has continued over Christmas and into the New Year. There were about ten participants for a social game on Christmas Eve and the same numbers on New Year’s Day. Sunday 8th January saw sixteen players for a twelve hole two person ambrose event which saw Stubba and Troy as the winners. This is despite both of them putting their tee shots over the fence on the seventh. Scott and the Ghost Walker were runners up. Matt P. also christened Al as dr google because he thinks he knows everything. Sunday 15th January saw eighteen players in a four ball stableford event over twelve holes which seems to be the popular number of holes to play. There were six teams of two players and two teams of three players. The winners were Stubba, Mac and the Ghost Walker and the runners up were Al, Matt P. and Aaron, visiting us from Yeoval. Bruno has played two weeks in a row. I wonder if he can make it three weeks in a row.
Thanks to Paul for cooking the bbq this week and Bell for cutting the onions and buttering the bread. I’d suggest anyone driving up Euchareena Road on a Sunday morning might watch out for wayward golf balls off the seventh tee. There were quite a few errant shots on Sunday heading over the fence and again Mick Philpott was one of these culprits. The fairways and tees are looking great thanks especially to Dave Campbell. Dave doesn’t play golf so we don’t see him on a Sunday morning to thank him for all his work but we certainly appreciate everything he does. Thanks Dave. Thanks also to Al for mowing some of the fairways whilst Scott has been working on the mower and also repairing sprinkler heads and raking greens. Thanks to Stubba, Bell and Kerry and anyone else for all their work. Golf again on Sunday, 8.30am for 9am. This will be followed by lunch and then the Molong Golf Club Annual General Meeting,1.30pm for 2pm, everyone welcome for both golf and the meeting.
