Natural disaster declared for Cabonne

A state of natural disaster has been declared for the Cabonne LGA following severe weather and flooding experienced in June and July. Nationals Upper House MP Sam Farraway said the natural disaster declaration would unlock much needed funds to support residents impacted by the flooding event. “Supporting our community during this trying time is incredibly important and I welcome the announcement today that Cabonne Council has been included in the Commonwealth-State Disaster declaration,” Mr Farraway said. “With this announcement our community can now access a range of support measures under the Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements. “I am encouraging individuals, businesses and primary producers affected by the floods to speak with Service NSW about the support available to help build back after this extreme weather event.” Assistance is being provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Assistance available under the DRFA for the Cabonne Local Government Area may include: · Support for eligible people whose homes or belongings have been damaged; · Assistance to support affected local councils with the costs of cleaning up and restoring damaged essential public assets; · Concessional interest rate loans for small businesses, primary producers and non-profit organisations; and · Freight subsidies for primary producers. Mr Farraway said the natural disaster declaration also unlocks assistance for Cabonne Council to restore essential public assets such as local roads. “Councils have a big job repairing road and infrastructure networks and this season’s unprecedented rainfall has struck a hard blow on top of an already big task. This funding is an important part of the recovery for our region and will ensure that Cabonne locals can travel safely from A to B, build back better and secure a brighter future.” More information and assistance visit: www.service.nsw.gov.au/ floods.

Supporting Royal Commission Findings “Our veterans put our country before themselves. It is time our country put our veterans first” Andrew Gee MP by Rozzi Smith

When Andrew Gee MP Nationals Member for Calare was asked to assume the role of Minister for Veteran Affairs in the former Morrison Government they could not have asked for a more dedicated and loyal member for the job. The people of Calare knew that our hardworking federal member would be willing to do his best to relieve the some 60,000 backlog of claims in order to serve veterans and their families and to achieve financial outcomes to relieve their lives and health. “The backlog is unacceptable” said Andrew. In March this year, as the Minister for Veteran Affairs - Andrew called a press conference with the intention to announce his resignation from the portfolio in protest of the then Government’s failures to recognise the serious challenges veterans were trying to cope with. A last minute phone call from National’s Leader, Barnaby Joyce MP averted Andrew’s resignation when on offer was a decision for budgetary intervention of $100 million. Post election and no longer in the role, Andrew continues to support the veterans. “I have met with the Albanese Government’s Minister for Veterans Affairs, Matt Keogh MP. “He (Matt Keogh MP) has a difficult job and he has my support” said Andrew. “I want him to succeed in clearing the claims backlog and addressing other issues raised by the Royal Commission.” In June, Andrew Gee MP gave evidence before the Royal Commission stating that as Minister he had to cut $430 million from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs to offset money allocated in the budget. In his evidence Andrew said “there is a clear link between the claims backlog and

suicide rates within the defence community.” As Minister, Andrew reported that “I found when trying to secure funding to fix the compensations claims backlog and other worthwhile initiatives was that, given the looming election, they were only being looked at in terms of whether or not there was political advantage in them” he said in a statement. “I’m still shocked and angered by this”. “Our veterans put our country before themselves. It is time our country put our veterans first.” This backlog is unacceptable, and I stand by what I said in April, when I threatened to resign from cabinet. This is a national disgrace.” “I hope all Australians will read the Commission’s report and gain a greater understanding of how crucial it is for our country to resolve these issues. Some politicians already have this understanding but unfortunately not all pollies get it. Maybe more will now.” “The Royal Commission has rightly made it crystal clear that it expects reform to be happening now and not delayed until the Commission has concluded. It’s a message that needs to be heeded.” If you or a someone you know is struggling, the following support is available: Open Arms - Veterans & Families Counselling line is available to support members of the current and ex-service community and their families. Molong Museum - Alive

MOLONG HISTORICAL SOCIETY AGM The Society held their Annual General Meeting last Saturday at the RSL Club. The Committee was elected for the next year: President: Bob Sullivan; Vice President: Elizabeth Griffin; Secretary: Lyndall Scott; Treasurer: Susan Grinpukel; Committee: Julie Lawrie, Lynne Robertson, Michael Cass, John Lawrie, and Sue Milne. A presentation was made to long-time and hard working volunteer, Sue Milne (Photo, Right) who was inducted as a Life Member. John Black gave an information talk on his family and their involvement in the Flour Milling industry. This was followed by afternoon tea, provided by our catering group and members. We would like to give a big thank you to everyone who has supported the Society through these challenging times. I would like to mention the RSL Club for the use of their facilities, Molong Express, MAG, Men’s Shed, Rotary Club, Show Society and the local shops and businesses who continue to support us over many years. In September, the museum will be visited

by a PHD student from Germany, researching “Child Immigration in Australia and Canada.” If anyone would like to meet her and talk about their experiences with Fairbridge please contact Sue Milne (Ph: 0400 425 015) . This includes cottage mothers, farm workers, community involvement and the children or relatives who came from England.

Molong's Bob Sullivan (R) has been returned to the President's Chair during the Molong Historical Society's AGM held last Saturday at the nearby RSL Club. With some 30 members and friends of the Museum attending the AGM - Bob introduced Guest Speaker, John Black, a member of the Molong Black's Flour Mill family. An important local family history story who helped lay the 'foundations' of the town and district's business, cultural and social history. Particularly in the agribiz sector of food production/ value-adding and jobs growth. Built on the corner of Watson and Hill Streets (above the railway line and creek to access both) the site is now occupied by the Molong Caravan Park. The house built by the Black family, once called 'Tyrone' is now the Molong Motor Inn reception and residence. Back in early Molong after harvest, local and district families would line up at Black's Mill with bags of their own grown wheat grain to be grounded into flour to be made into breads, cakes, biscuits, pies, to place food on their own family tables. "There's a lot more to the Molong Black's Flour Mill story with photos of the building - and how it operated (ask about the pythons!!). All able to be viewed

at the Molong Museum" said Bob. "At the moment we are rebuilding the Museum's front verandah. When completed the Museum will be advising of new opening hours through the Molong Express and/ or social media. "We're always looking for volunteers to help with researching family stories, local stories, and to help with displays and exhibitions the committee are planning." "It's an interesting place to be" said Museum leader, Bob Sullivan. "And a good cuppa is always on the go". Interested? Give Bob a call on 0404 674 554 and have a chat. (He's a nice bloke - and willing to have a talk about all things Molong and history).

ELDERS CATTLE INFORMATION EVENING The cellar in the Museum building was exposed (R) during the rebuilding of the verandah. Some of the volunteer workmen and women timidly asked fearless leader Bob Sullivan the most asked question in Molong. "Is there really a ghost living in the cellar?" "Hey guys!" A voice came from somewhere deep within the stone walls - "I'm too cute to spook".

Molong’s Magpies

Back in the day

The Oilsplus Fuel and Oils grand finalists for 2022 are decided - Molong Magpies Rugby Union Club will host the Coonabarabran Kookas. The Kookas pulled off a huge upset of minor premiers Blayney Rams. Remember, though, that we hear Blayney who field much the same team in both the Rugby League and Union comps played a League final in the morning before facing Coonabarabran.

A message from Scott Barrett MLC

We reckon its the 1950’s

Molong go into the game with both a loss and a win against Coona

“Good luck to the Molong Magpies Rugby Club in the Grand Final this weekend. Though my involvement was some years ago, I remain a fan and will be right behind them this weekend. All the best lads, enjoy the experience.” [Scott is in the centre of the photo] Long-time resident of Molong, Edna MacFarlane, celebrated her 91st Birthday with friends at Kay and Phillip’s Wing Hang Chinese Restaurant in Bank Street. Edna was born into the Brown family, one of Molong’s early settler families. It was a large family with Edna’s father and brothers enlisting for wartime duty. Unfortunately, Edna’s father was the name and rank on one of the Telegram deliveries in town when the Postmaster delivered the news of his death to Edna’s mother. “I was born in Molong and attended the old Molong Public School. I worked in many jobs around town - including the hospital (in the kitchen) and when I retired I had spent 35 years as part of the cleaning staff at the Molong Central School. Edna met Mac MacFarlane - a Fairbridgian - at a friend’s home. “My brothers were not too happy with me when I met Mac - whom she spent her entire married life with before his passing a few years ago. Both Edna and Mac and their family were involved in sport in town particularly rugby league football. And, contributed many volunteer hours supporting their kids involvement in their sporting years. These days Edna lives with her daughter in Molong and enjoys lunches and supporting business in Molong with her long-time local friends including Ann Wright, Jan Cornish, Robyn Keil, Judy Evers, Carol Gersbach, Vi Thomas, and many others. We wish the lovely Edna a wonderful birthday on Tuesday 16 August 2022 - (note: we can hardly believe this lovely lady is 91 years of age - she remains gorgeous with her red hair and pretty smile. Happy birthday Edna.

Morrison’s passion for control trashed conventions and accountability The only credible explanation for Scott Morrison personally installing himself, as an undisclosed ministerial partner, in several portfolios is the former prime minister’s passion for control. The fact he didn’t tell senior colleagues, let alone the public, of this strange arrangement reflects another of his passions – for secrecy. The revelation of the arrangement has further tarnished Morrison’s already battered reputation after his humiliating election loss. As of late Monday, Morrison had given no public explanation for his highly unorthodox and indefensible behaviour towards his ministers. He texted Sky, which sought comment, that since leaving the prime ministership he had not “engaged in any day to day politics”. Sky quickly pointed out he’s still in parliament. Morrison’s odd conduct was revealed in a new book, Plagued, by Simon Benson and Geoff Chambers, journalists with The Australian. They wrote that early in the pandemic Morrison “hatched a radical and until now secret plan […] He would swear himself in as health minister alongside [Greg] Hunt. "Such a move was without precedent, let alone being done in secret, but the trio [which included attorney-general Christian Porter] saw it as an elegant solution to the problem they were trying to solve – safeguarding against any one minister having absolute power. ”‘I trust you, mate,’ Morrison told Hunt, ‘but I’m swearing myself in as health minister, too.’ “It would also be useful if one of them caught Covid and became incapacitated. Hunt not only accepted the measure but welcomed it. "Considering the economic measures the government was taking, and the significant fiscal implications and debt that was being incurred, Morrison also swore himself in as finance minister alongside Mathias Cormann. He wanted to ensure there were two people who had their hands on the purse strings,” Benson and Chambers wrote. This “elegant solution” was anything but. In allegedly protecting against a minister having too much power, it was just increasing the prime minister’s power. As for a minister becoming incapacitated: replacing them quickly is easy. Unlike Hunt, Cormann didn’t even

Matk Tsikas/AAP

receive the courtesy of being told he had a silent ministerial partner. Morrison did not exercise any powers as finance minister but it was another story in resources, as we have learned as more information comes out. According to The Australian, in April 2021 Morrison was appointed minister for the portfolio industry, science, energy and resources. Later that year, with the election approaching, the PM used his power to veto the permit for the PEP11 gas exploration off the NSW coast. This was a highly political move to try to save and win votes. The bid, however, was unsuccessful – all four backbenchers whose names were on the press release lost their seats. Then resources minister Keith Pitt – who had another view on the exploration issue – has indicated he knew of the dual ministerial power some time before and wasn’t happy. Morrison at the time was asked about his earlier line that the ultimate decision on the drilling lay with Pitt. “I decided to take the decision as the prime minister, which I’m authorised to do,” he said. In retrospect, his wording was precise, alluding to his own ministerial power.

the election, knew of Pitt’s situation (as did Joyce’s predecessor, Michael McCormack) although he wasn’t aware of the other double ups. David Littleproud, now Nationals leader, on Monday described Morrison’s behaviour as “pretty ordinary”. “If you have a cabinet government, you trust your cabinet.” Opposition leader Peter Dutton was in the dark, saying, “Obviously the then prime minister had his reasons, his logic for it, but it was not a decision I was party to or was aware of. It was a decisionmaking process that he’s made.” Anthony Albanese has sought advice from the Solicitor-General and was being briefed on Monday about the arrangement. “This is extraordinary and unprecedented,” Albanese said. Morrison had been running “a shadow government that was operating in the shadows”. It was “the sort of tin-pot activity that we would ridicule if it was in a nondemocratic country”. Governor-General David Hurley indicated in a statement from his office that the constitutional provisions had been satisfied.

The matter is now in court, where Morrison is named as “the responsible Commonwealth minister”. Barnaby Joyce, Nationals leader before

“The Governor-General, following normal process and acting on the advice of the government of the day, appointed former prime minister Morrison to

administer portfolios other than the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet,” the statement said. “The appointments were made consistently with section 64 of the Constitution. "It is not uncommon for ministers to be appointed to administer departments other than their portfolio responsibility. These appointments do not require a swearing-in ceremony – the GovernorGeneral signs an administrative instrument on the advice of the prime minister.” This highlights the different between what is legal and what is proper. Morrison was savvy enough to ensure his arrangement did not flout the law. But it did flout the conventions of how cabinet government and ministerial accountability should work. Morrison treated senior colleagues with disdain. He treated the public as mugs, undeserving of the right to know. But, though the voters had no idea of this strange and narcissistic arrangement, they knew him well enough to decide in May that he wasn’t the leader they wanted (theconversation.com)

NEW GOVERNMENT POLICY WILL LEAD TO FEWER COUNTRY DOCTORS Back in 2011, I put my hand up to get into politics because I could see that the bush was missing out on services and infrastructure that city people were taking for granted. While we’ve made great strides in some areas, a serious healthcare divide remains between the city and the country. It is a cold, hard truth that the further you live away from the city, the younger you will die. That’s why the Distribution Priority Area (DPA) system was established. This system identifies places in regional, rural and remote Australia with unmet needs or lack of access to GP services. Overseas trained doctors who move to Australia and practice medicine must work in DPAs for at least 10 years. This ensures regional, remote and rural areas of Australia have access to GPs, making the DPA system crucial to the rural healthcare scene. Unfortunately, the new government has up-ended the definition of a regional, remote and rural area to now include outer suburbs of capital cities. The new government has changed the rules so areas like Fairfield, Hornsby and Warringah in Sydney are now part of the DPA system. The outcome of this change is that overseas trained doctors will

move from rural and remote locations where they’ve been required to work, to areas a stone’s throw from capital city CBDs. Dr Megan Belot of The Rural Doctors Association has said “We are fearful for rural communities right across Australia who are now at extreme risk of losing their doctors… This will cost lives of rural and remote patients who already suffer poorer health outcomes than their city counterparts.” This policy is of extreme concern, and I will fight for this re-zoning decision to be reversed. We all deserve equal access to healthcare, and I will do everything I can to shine a light on this terrible policy decision and the devastating impacts it will have on the bush. Pictured: Andrew with CSU Medical students Miranda Eyb and Jamil Khalfan at the official opening of the CSU Medical School.

FUEL EXCISE CUT MUST CONTINUE

Earlier this year, in an effort to relieve cost of living pressures, the Federal Government halved the fuel excise by 22c per litre. That fuel excise holiday ends on 28 September. Sky high petrol prices are having a devastating effect on our country communities, where residents must drive longer distances and don’t have the same access to public transport. It was hoped that fuel prices may have settled by now but, as they haven’t, I believe a continuation of the relief is necessary. I call upon the new Government to extend the fuel price holiday beyond the end of next month. A 22-cent increase in petrol prices would be a major blow to rural communities, households and businesses.

VICTORY IN THE PACIFIC DAY 15 August 1945 marked the end of the Second World War - now known as Victory in the Pacific (VP) Day - and this week we commemorated this special day in Australia’s history. Around 1 million Australians served their country during WWII. Of those, nearly 40,000 lost their lives and many more were wounded or suffered injuries. At Milne Bay in New Guinea it was Australians who were the first to repulse and defeat Japanese land forces. They did it again on the Kokoda Track, helping to turn the tide of the war in the Pacific and ensuring the freedom of our country. While VP Day in 1945 was a celebration, bringing an end to the war, it was a bittersweet day for many, remembering loved ones who would never return from the war. I was honoured to lay a wreath at the Orange Cenotaph this year, and to take a moment to remember the selfless service, courage and sacrifice of all those who served our country. Lest we Forget.

REMEMBERING THOSE WHO SERVED IN VIETNAM This Vietnam Veterans’ Day, on the 18th of August, we pause and remember those who served and sacrificed for Australia during the Vietnam War. Between 1962 and 1975 almost 60,000 Australians served in Vietnam and more than 500 lives were lost. While The Battle of Long Tan is the most well known of the Australian engagements, there were many others such as Coral and Balmoral. The men and women who served in Vietnam did so because our country asked them to and they acquitted themselves with distinction. My uncle was a proud National Serviceman or “Nasho” who served at Nui Dat in 1967. On Vietnam Veterans’ Day we pause to remember them and say thank you. Our communities and our country are very grateful for all that our veterans did for us. Lest we forget.

FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE - HAVE YOUR SAY! Last week the Federal Government announced a further $10 million in funding for Indonesia to help fight the threat of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD). Unfortunately the Government still does not seem to be taking the threat seriously enough. Ever since FMD was discovered in Bali, the Government has had to be pushed into action rather than treating the threat with the urgency it deserves. If FMD reaches our shores, the impact on our economy will be more devastating than the COVID-19 outbreak so it needs to be treated with the same level of priority. We are not seeing this. REG’S BENCH A prisoner in jail receives a letter from his wife: "Dear husband, I have decided to plant some lettuce in the back garden. When is the best time to plant them?" The prisoner, knowing that the prison guards read all mail, replies in a letter: "Dear wife, whatever you do, do not touch the back garden. That is where I hid all the money." A week or so later, he receives another letter from his wife. "Dear husband, you wouldn't believe what happened. Some men came with shovels to the house and dug up the back garden." The prisoner writes back: "Dear wife, now is the best time to plant the lettuce Acme Steel, feeling it was time for a shakeup, hired a new CEO. The new boss was determined to rid the company of all slackers. On a tour of the facilities, the CEO noticed a guy leaning against a wall. The room was full of workers and he wanted to let them know that he meant business. He asked the guy, "How much money do you make a week?" A little surprised, the young man looked at him and said, "I make $400 a week. Why?" The CEO said, "Wait right here." He walked back to his office, came back in two minutes, and handed the guy $1,600 in cash and said, "Here's four weeks' pay. Now GET OUT and don't come back." Feeling pretty good about himself the CEO looked around the room and asked, "Does anyone want to tell me what that

goof-ball did here?" From across the room a voice said, "He's the pizza delivery guy." A woman ran a red traffic light and crashed into a man's car. Both of their cars are demolished but amazingly neither of them was hurt. After they crawled out of their cars, the woman said, "Wow, just look at our cars! There's nothing left, but fortunately we are unhurt. This must be a sign from God that we should meet and be friends and live together in peace for the rest of our days." The man replied, "I agree with you completely. This must be a sign from God!" The woman continued, "And look at this, here's another miracle. My car is completely demolished, but my bottle of wine didn't break. Surely God wants us to drink this wine and celebrate our good fortune." Then she hands the bottle to the man. The man nods his head in agreement, opens it, drinks half the bottle and then hands it back to the woman. The woman takes the bottle, immediately puts the cap back on, and hands it back to the man. The man asks, "Aren't you having any?" She replies, "Nah. I think I'll just wait for the police." Men will never learn.

Molong Bowls Pennants Molong Men’s teams travelled to Manildra on Sunday competing in the 3’s Pennants. The weather certainly turned it on for the men, with hail, sun, rain and wind. Great weather for bowls. Manildra came away with a home win 9-1 The Men’s Pennants 4’s teams travelled to Parkes also on Sunday. The weather was no different there. Parkes also came away with a home win, the only highlight of the day was the bus trip. Thanks to Bob Murray for driving the rowdy group and returning them home safely. Bob left with hair and on return it was rather thin. This Sunday see’s the 3’s & 4’s pennants teams play Manildra and Parkes here in Molong. Games kicking off at 11am. Come on down and cheer the Molong lads on, they need lots of encouragement after the weekend’s losses. Hopefully the weather is much improved from last weekends. The Members draw of $600 didn’t go off on Saturday night. Commiserations to Corni. If you are a member of the club, come along on Saturday night. You might go home a little richer than when you arrived. This Saturday will be $625.00. The draw is at 5.45pm, with meat tray raffles drawn straight after the badge draw. T

Commentary It was a pretty good quality yarding with some good young cattle to suit the processors along with fair numbers to suit the feeders. There were limited numbers of grown steers, fair numbers of grown heifers and there were 140 cows yarded. Most of the usual buyers were in attendance and operating in pretty strong market. Young cattle to the trade were up to 10c dearer with prime vealers selling to 540c/kg. Prime steer yearlings sold from 500c to 551c while the prime heifer yearlings sold from 470c to 547c/ kg. Feeder steers were up to 9c dearer while the feeder heifers were firm to 5c/kg dearer. Feeder steers sold from 470c to 551c while the feeder heifers sold from 440c to 536c/kg. Young cattle to the restocker sold at similar rates with the young steers selling from 400c to 651c while the young restocker heifers sold from 385c to 540c/kg. Grown steer and heifers were 5c dearer with the prime grown steers selling from 460c to 540c/kg. Prime grown heifers sold from 430c

to 515c/kg. Cows were 9c to 15c dearer with the 2 and 3 scores selling from 250c to 395c/ kg. Prime heavy weight cows sold from 372c to 416c to average 402c/kg. Heavy bulls were dearer selling to 361c/kg. CTLX SHEEP 10 August Commentary It was a mostly plain quality yarding with a large percentage of the yarding presenting in dry condition showing the effects of the winter. There were only odd pens of ideal trade lambs and well finished heavy weight lambs mixed throughout the yarding. Not all the usual buyers were in attendance with both northern and southern processors absent. The very best of the shorn trade lambs were close to firm though the bulk of the trade lambs were up to $19/head cheaper with a great deal of buyer resistance on any of the woolly lambs yarded. Trade lambs sold from $110 to $185 to average between 630c and 690c/kg cwt. Heavy weight lambs were firm to $5 cheaper with the lambs over 24kg selling from $150 to $200/head to average 655c/kg cwt. Restocker lambs were around firm selling from $50 to $125/head. The feeders paid from $85 to $148 for lambs to go into the feedlot. Hoggets sold to $180/head. It was a mixed yarding of mutton where most grades were $3 to $7/head cheaper. Merino ewes sold from $99 to $140 while crossbred ewes sold from $112 to $200 with the heavy weights averaging between 440c and 490c/kg cwt. Merino wethers sold from $116 to $143/ head. Two pens of very light crossbred ewes sold for $25 and $26 while a pen of Merino ewes sold to the restockers for $61/head.

Sunday Only three players fronted at the Royal Molong golf course on Sunday hopeful that the weather would clear and we could get a round of golf in. Since we were there anyway we decided to play a few holes and managed to get five holes in before a passing shower put the kibosh on any further play so we packed up and headed home to the fire where all the other sensible people were. Even though we weren’t keeping score, on one hole Paul had a two foot putt. He asked Bro was it a gimme. He was informed that he would have to putt it out. “You know “ Paul says “ a true gentleman would have conceded me that putt.” “ That may be true.“ replied Bro, “ but today I’m not a gentleman…. I’m a golfer.” We are hoping for a fine day on Sunday to get a game of golf in and then have a bit of a working bee to finalise any odd jobs on the course in preparation for the Molong Open tournament the following Sunday. The course is looking pretty good with probably the main issue being

sand on some of the greens where all the rain has washed some of the sand to the edge of some greens. Our wonderful club secretary has sent flyers out to other golf clubs informing them of the event so hopefully we will get a good roll up with some fine weather. Some Dunedoo, Wellington and Wattle Flat golfers have previously indicated that they are keen to attend so we hope this eventuates. Here are several indications that you’re playing too much golf: Before you pick up the salt shaker, you mark its position with a coin. You ask the shopper ahead in the checkout line if you can play through. When you pick up something off the floor, you have to lean on your putter. You tell the lost motorist that the petrol station is only a par four away on the left. You have your priorities in order: food, shelter, green fees, job. Golf again on Sunday, 8.30am for 9am. Please come and join us.
