Council's Recovery planning P5 THIS + Event news & photos WEEK The Molong Railway Bridge NEXT -a massive design failure? WEEK Christmas 2022 - Peace & Goodwill
The people of Molong are heading towards Christmas 2022 with a new sense of peace and goodwill - and a renewed sense of pride and belief in their town and community that has noticeably emerged from the November flood. This coming festive season is arriving as this wonderful town and community rebuilds to a new future. One that nature has signalled will require significant 'change' and new ideas for the lower reaches of town. Where early Molong's settlement needs and future growth was dedicated to the coming of the railways and in turn, quick access to water - the Molong Creek. Clever communities like Molong have been built on both progress and when disaster strikes - the new opportunities. The need for 'change' is right in front of us as a community. Access to technology of all kinds has never been greater. Inadequate and antiquated infrastructure
remains throughout the town - under the ground and above. There is much that has to be done. Can be done. Must be done. The foundations of Molong's Bank Street buildings have been suffering for decades. Shaky to the bone, cracks appearing and staying. Largely ignored. Floorplans that no longer suit today's retailers and business owners. As this generation of caretakers of the Molong story - it is up to us - each one of us - to make sure that we handover a town of charm, history, memories, peace and goodwill to the happy smiling faces of our children like those on this page. Smiling faces and hope that the current generation will now focus on changing weather patterns and head to town and neighbourhood planning boards, and with technological advancements available to each one of us - work together to not only find the solutions to the problems of today - but to be prepared for tomorrw. Let's welcome 2023 as the year of new opportunities.
"We love Christmas Trees, pretty lights, singing Christmas Carols, Santa ... and the story about baby Jesus.
Santa visits the Express
“Santa’s been” said a delighted Paul Mullins when walking past the Molong Express office. Rozzi was equally as happy to see that Molong’s Santa (aka Hopper) had placed his magic to brighten Molong’s Christmas (and ours). A massive thank you to Hopper and Lynn. Love you!
What a wonderful surprise! After the flood - the amazing people of Molong and District - and visitors - sent Paul and I away and took over the cleaning out of our former Express office/ bookshop/plant shop - and nearby home. Kate Strahorn and local families placed a decorated christmas tree and decorations in our front window. Wandering downtown on Sunday to join in the fun of the latest celebrations Harriet and Dakota rushed out of their ‘Sippin Nutrition’ shop next door selling delicious teas from their flood damaged shop. “Take a look at your windows” said Harriet. WOW! Santa has already to brightenChristmas 2022. Later on we wandered up to the ‘Top Pub’ where we thought our Santa might be. Yep! There he was - good friend Hopper and his
delightful partner, Lynn. The pair own MidWest signs in Orange (they live in Molong) and their work is sensational. Thank you to Hopper and Lynn and their team for brightening up the Express window - and the Freemasons Hotel windows - you have made our Christmas and local residents and visitors to Molong very happy to see the clever Santa collection on our windows.

Donato does DIY
State Member for Orange Philip Donato MP today, Monday 12th December 2022, announced his resignation from the NSW Shooters Fishers and Farmers Party. Donato, the firstever Shooters Fishers & Farmers Party candidate to be elected into any lower house seat in Australia, drew a line in the sand with party leader Robert Borsak, following Mr Borsak’s unrepentant misogynistic comments aimed at former party colleague Helen Dalton MP. “Today I’m announcing my resignation from the Shooters Fishers and Farmers Party, and will continue to represent the good people of the Orange electorate as a true independent – allegiant to our country communities,” Mr Donato said. Mr Donato was first elected under the Shooters’ flag in the 2016 state by-election with a margin of just 55 votes. Working tremendously hard, Donato’s robust political style was extremely effective in motivating the Government to deliver close to half a billion dollars in relief to the drought-stricken communities across the entire state. His unique brand of politicking, which harnessed prosecutorial skills from his former police profession, in holding government to account, resulted in Donato converting a 55 vote win in 2016 to a nearly 15,000 vote win at the 2019 election. Donato’s representation appealed more broadly and likely contributed to the successful election of SFF colleagues Roy Butler and Helen Dalton at the 2019 State election. In March this year Mrs Dalton resigned from the Shooters Party to go as an independent MP just three years into her first term, for reasons which are believed include the way she was treated by the leader of the Shooters Party. Shooters Party leader Robert Borsak made headlines in September when he made an unsavoury, misogynistic and physically threatening comment in parliament regarding former SFF colleague and Member for Murray Helen Dalton, saying “he (LC presiding President) should have got up and clocked her (Mrs Dalton).” The issue percolated among his colleagues long after the ink had dried on the newspaper reports, resulting in Mr Donato and his colleague Roy Butler laying down an ultimatum to the almost 70-year-old party leader, to step down or they would go independent. “For 22 years as a police officer I stood up to protect women from threats of violence, intimidation and mistreatment,” Mr Donato said. “I’m a man of integrity; I will never compromise my principles. I’ll always call out wrong-doing, and stand up for what is right – no matter who it involves. “Mr Borsak was completely unrepentant about his statement, and when he failed to adequately
4
Nathan welcomes travellers address the issue, Roy Butler and I laid down the ultimatum – step down from his position or we leave the party to go as independent MPs. “Mr Borsak refused to step down, so the issue rested with the outcome of the party’s AGM, held at Singleton last Saturday. “The party chose to circle its wagons around the leader, and when I raised the issue with Mr Borsak’s hand-picked executive team at the AGM, I asked them regarding Mr Borsak’s threatening comment in parliament – do you find Mr Borsak’s comment acceptable behaviour? Following a lengthy pause, a committee member replied that the issue had not been discussed amongst the committee and therefore they had no comment about it. “The party executive did not address the issue with Mr Borsak, nor did Mr Borsak provide any excuse or apology for his remarks, which, I believe, have brought the party into disrepute; It’s clear that not all Shooters are of the same calibre. “The Shooters Fishers and Farmers Party response to this serious issue was grossly inadequate, and failed to hold Mr Borsak accountable for his inexcusable comments towards a woman and fellow MP, rendering my continued association with a party which promotes prehistoric behaviour completely untenable. “I will continue to vigorously advocate for the communities of the Orange electorate, always representing them and their best interests. Being independent of a political party now provides me increased political agility and uninhibited negotiating power. “I will now recontest the 2023 State election as a true independent candidate for the seat of Orange. “I’ll continue to stand for rural and regional NSW, farmers, fishers and law-abiding firearms owners – just as I’ve always done,” Mr Donato said.

Molong’s Nathan Lee (far Left) was happy to welcome the ‘Travelling Gold Class Fun Over 50’s’ tour bus to town when they parked in Bank Street as street stalls were being set up for the Molong Christmas Shopping Night Street Party. The happy travellers were enjoying a fun filled tour from their homes in Brisbane and other parts of Queensland. The bus pulled into Bank Street on the way from Dubbo (toured the Zoo etc) to Cowra (Japanese Gardens) before heading up the highway to be back home by Christmas. Stallholders welcomed the lovely travellers who after finding out what had happened in Molong (floods) and the reason for the special

Well, we did have Molong Gelato at one time - today Lime & Stone have delicious icecreams - cold drinks at the pub. Some of the ladies wandered into IGA to purchase packs of ice-creams to share. “We’ll be back in January for the Elvis Festival” said the tour guide. “Can you call in again at Molong please?” “Sure can ... see you then”. “Hey, can you pick us up in Molong and take us touring through Queensland?” “Sure can!” Our bags are packed!
Council establishes flood Recovery Committee
Earlier this week Cabonne Council General Manager, Brad Byrnes, advised the Express that a package is being prepared to give communities a better understanding of the varying impacts and also what Council has done or is doing to manage and hopefully mitigate going forwards. In the meantime Cabonne Council, at its meeting on Tuesday established a Local Recovery Committee (LRC) for Cabonne [and a specific Committe for Eugowra's special needs]. The Committee has been established under the framework provided by the State Government (specifically Resilience NSW ) to demonstrate commitment as a Community and Council working together to gain best outcomes. Mr Byrnes said that it was important to understand how Council is expected to approach the situation by the State. This is important as the gaining of Federal or State Government funding for flood mitigation projects or initiatives will easier, if not only, come via this route. From the paper presented to Council on Tuesday: "Council will establish a Local Recovery Committee (LRC) [and a specific Committe for Eugowra] which is the strategic decision-making body for local recovery. It provides visible leadership and plays a key role in restoring confidence to the community by assessing the consequences of the emergency and coordination activities to rebuild, restore and rehabilitate the social, built economic and nature environments of the affected. The LRC will include local representatives from participating agencies (government and non-government) as well as representatives
of affected communities. This committee is established to represent the Cabonne community, guide decisions about local priorities, resource allocation and management. Council will be seeking a nominated representative from the communities of Molong, Cudal and Canowindra Whilst there was significant impacts to other parts of the shire including communities, farmers and other business members, at this point the formalised structure provided in the framework still enables stakeholder input from other affected areas other than those specifically represented. Council will of course work with the entire community of Cabonne to both minimize, where possible, the ongoing impacts of the disaster and to work with other stakeholders to increase the resilience of our communities in future The Resilience NSW guidelines provides a flexible structure for the establishment of an LRC. There is an ability to have the committee chaired by a Recovery Coordinator provided by Resilience NSW, however it is considered optimum as a council lead response to have the Mayor, or delegate, chair the Cabonne LRC in the structure proposed. In addition to the community representatives, council is making representation to key services to provide local representation on the committee such as Transport for NSW, Western NSW Local Health District, Department of Education, Local Lands Services, Regional Development NSW." It is understood that the first meeting of the committee will be on 15 (today). More to come next week.

We could not have put it any better than the ABC News reported: "Kate Strahorn, Emily Eckhard, Kate Greenwood, Helen Whittle and Cass Sullivan were cleaning mud and debris from the local pool when they decided to start their Rebuild Molong campaign. Taking to social media and creating a GoFundMe page, the women have used their individual skills to bring the town's effort to the attention of Australians. Ms Strahorn said raising money for local sports was a way to bring some joy back to the community. "We felt if we could restore some of our sporting facilities it would bring some normality back to life for everyone who has been affected," she said. "It's about giving kids something to look forward to and families something to look forward to, to come back and see their kids playing sport again," Ms Strahorn said. Ms Strahorn said getting sport back up and running was also about supporting the mental

health of the young people in the community. "We don't have beaches or oceans for our kids to go swim in," she said. "So when you lose your town pool or you lose your facilities down at the recreational field or sport is cancelled, we've really got to find somewhere for our kids to congregate again." Ms Strahorn said the community response in and around Molong since the flood had been phenomenal. The group's goal was to raise $100,000, however the GoFundMe, combined with auctions on Friday, has raised $237,750. Ms Strahorn said at this stage, the group was focused on the fundraising itself, but she and the other women were looking forward to being able to distribute the funds and get local kids back to sport. "As soon as we've got a clear picture that we can move forward, we will say sport is back on," she said."

ACTION NOT WORDS NEEDED ON BACK HOME GRANTS It’s hard to believe that after all the press conferences, helicopter arrivals, street walks and concern at the scenes of devastation across the Cabonne Shire, our communities are still waiting for these $20,000 Back Home grants to be delivered. They could make a real difference to our residents rebuilding their lives and homes, yet almost a month after this tragedy, there is nothing but buck passing and finger pointing between the state and federal governments. Either one of them could deliver these grants and it would be a drop in the bucket to their budgets. Is it any wonder that people get cynical? I’ve written to the Premier and Prime Minister and asked them to get this moving.

CONGRATULATIONS HSC STUDENTS! After 13 years of schooling - that’s about 2,500 days behind a school desk! – the Class of 2022 have received their ATAR scores. A lot of fingernails were no doubt nibbled down as year 12 students logged in on Thursday morning to see their HSC results – it’s a nerve-wracking moment, to be sure! Since I was at school, blackboards have become smartboards and notepads have been swapped for laptops, but there’s one thing that hasn’t changed, and never will. It’s the knowledge that, no matter the number achieved on your HSC, what counts more is the courage you have to pursue your dreams, and the hard work you’re willing to put into achieving them. Your score is not the be-all and end-all, and there are plenty of paths available to get to where you want to go. During some of their most important schooling years, the Class of 2022 battled lockdowns and persevered through many many months of online learning. They should be so proud of their efforts and achievements as they enter this new chapter of their lives! Congratulations, Class of 2022! Remember, it ain’t what you do, it’s the way that you do it. For graduates thinking of continuing studies away from home, I am pleased to advise there are a number of scholarships and payments that can help our country students reach for the stars! • If relocating more than 90 minutes from home to study a Cert IV (or higher) at TAFE, or to attend University, make sure to apply for the Tertiary Access Payment (TAP) of $3,000 or $5,000. Students may also be eligible for a Relocation Scholarship that can support them throughout their studies. www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/tertiary-access-payment www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/relocation-scholarship • Applications are now open for our Rural and Regional Enterprise Scholarships Scheme. It offers up to $18,000 for a four-year degree. www.qtac.edu.au/rres-program • I also recommend contacting the Country Education Foundation to access other opportunities.

YOU SHOULD BE SO PROUD! I was honoured to attend the Molong Central School Presentation Ceremony evening, and present awards including the Respect and Responsibility awards, one of which went to Archie Chrystall (who is a foot taller every time I see him!) Congratulations to all the graduates and very deserving award winners. Parents and grandparents joined the students for the end of
year celebration on a beautiful summer's evening. It was great to also meet and congratulate the newly elected 2023 school leaders - 2023 captains Mia Fitzsimmons and Will Thomas. Best of luck to these outstanding young leaders as they take over the reins! After a disrupted couple of years it was wonderful to see the school come together to recognise their achievements!

RAIL BRIDGE UPDATE The cleanup and rebuilding in Molong continues. When I was in Molong recently I stopped by the bowling club and saw the full extent of the damage to this wonderful community facility. With three storm and flood events this year we can't expect residents and businesses to keep going through this. It's too much. The NSW Governments needs to urgently fix the rail bridge over the creek (plus the road bridge) and modify them to get the water flowing and stop them backing up in big rain. We can’t stop major storms but we can minimise the impacts. Enough is enough. We can't keep doing this. Fixing the rail bridge will greatly lessesn the impacts of storms/ flooding. I’ve raised this directly with the Premier requesting urgent action be taken, to prevent this happening again!

Another “party” to cheer us up - thanks to our Motorcycle rider friends
Molong has long been a favourite drop-in spot for motorcyclists. Remember the “Meet U in Molong” events years ago that brought bought riders to town from all over the State. And then there are our plentiful local riders. Well last Sunday they returned, along with many other locals and visitors, to put on a Car, Truck and Bike display at the Molong Railway Station and the Freemasons Hotel. Organised (if that’s the word) by Shane “Guru” Harvey, fellow Fishing Club mates and many others a wonderful morning was had at the Paris end of Bank Street in a party atmoshere. (R) Dave Stojanov, mine host at the Freemasons, didn’t let his washed out kitchen get in the way of him preparing fish and chips for the hundreds of visitors who turned up.

Christmas Fun - Lunches, wreath making ... local gatherings, people being together (R) Pauline and Lynda of Summerhouse (Gidley Street next to Wildflower Cafe) held a fun-filled day for Christmas Wreath making. Participants (photographed right) travelled from Forbes, Bathurst, Orange, Cumnock to join local creatives. Thank you to the lovely Pauline and Lynda for holding such a lovely event - for the delicious lunch and showing us 'how to'. Keep an eye out in 2023 ... Summerhouse will be holding a chalk painting workshop. Pauline is an expert in the wonderful style. Get your chair ready to do a makeover! The Molong RSL Sub-Branch held a Christmas luncheon and gathering of members and their families at the club's Bistro last Sunday. Ben's delicious roast beef and baked vegies dish was well received ... and loved. The Express enjoyed seeing this lovely group of people again - there was Betty Watcham, Faye Clark, Normie and Norma Carpenter, Michael & Kathryn Frew, Cark and family, Mary and Mick Mulhall, David and Irene Bloomfield, Tony, guests and new family in town, Kate and her returned services man (wearing a fabulous guns and roses shirt).

Reg is back, OK, with some of his flood jokes.
remember him proclaiming that 'by hell or high water, I am going to mow that lawn!'"
My wife and I had a huge argument because our kitchen was flooded. But we've sorted it now. It's all water under the fridge.
What does the Pope say when the creek starts to flash flood? God, dam it.
A flood sweeps through the town. Everybody runs except for a priest who continues to pray in the church. A man with a car sees him and tells him to hop on. The priest replies "no thanks,God will save me." Time passes and the priest is knee deep in water. A guy in a boat sees him and also tells him to hop on.But the priest again declined and said that God will save him. Time passes again and the whole church gets filled with water. So the priest climbs on the roof. Once on the roof a helicopter aproaches him.The pilot gives him a ladder and tells him to climb in the helicopter. But just like before the priest declines and says that God will save him. Time passes again the water reaches the roof and the preist drowns. After he dies the priest reaches heaven and asks God why didn't he save him. God replies:"Oh so the car, the boat and the helicopter weren't enough for you?" The neighborhood was flooded... ...so much to the point that the rooftops were the only dry place. Vince and Frank were seated on one roof, waiting for rescue, when suddenly, out of one of the houses, they observe a floating hat. It drifts over to a shed nearby and then drifts back to the front of the house. Bubbles started bursting near the hat, and then it then moved in a circular pattern where the circles got smaller and smaller (like a spiral) until it hit the center of what would be the lawn in front of the house. The bubbles stopped and the hat then drifted on back to the shed. The hat then disappeared back into the house. Vince turns to Frank and says, "What do you think that was about?". Frank answers, "Oh that's just Robert. I remember talking to him yesterday and I

QUICK CROSSWORD
REG’S BENCH
A painter is employed to whitewash the local convent. But he makes the mistake of thinning the paint down too much, so that it all washes away the first time it rains. The Minister rings the painter to complain. "What do you want me to do about it?" says the painter. "Repaint," says the minister, "And thin no more." A man is driving the night of the flood. And then the car suddenly stop working. The man starts to get nervous, and then he sees something getting out of the woods in the roadside. Then he hears a knock in the window. There is a dog, a german shepherd. "Open the hood", says the dog. The man freezes and do nothing. "Open the hood", repeats the dog. The man opens it. The dog starts to work on the engine, and then says "start the car". The man tries but nothing happens. The dog works on the engine again, and then asks the man to start the car, which turns on right away. The dog just got out and entered the woods on the roadside. Baffled, the man starts driving and stops on a gas station a few miles away, and says to the gas station attendant: "Man, you're not going to believe me, but I have to say it to you". "I was driving and my car stopped working, and a giant german shepherd came and fixed my car". The attendant makes a very scary face and says: "Man, you have no idea how lucky you are." "Why?", says the man. "That dog is a tire repairman, not a car mechanic."

MOLONG COMMUNITY CHURCH Molong Assemblies of God Contact Ps Deon Stapelberg Ph 0498 659 703 For meeting details Please keep an eye out We are saddened by the removal of fence posts made of old railway line from the backyard of the Gatekeeper’s Cottage. We are hopeful that whoever removed these will return them as they are an important part of the cottage’s history. Meanwhile in Betts Street, a wood stove from the backyard of the historical cottage (destroyed by the flood) is now a virtual skeleton of its former self. Someone has removed important/ working parts and taken these from the site. Rendering the stove/historical piece of early Molong ‘no longer’. Both owners will be very grateful for their return Flood damaged homes and business premises need to be protected - please keep an eye out. Molong Sunday Golf Notes Another disappointing roll up for golf at Royal Molong on Sunday with just eight players competing in a twelve hole individual stableford event. I played in a group consisting of Al, Bro and Troy. Playing with these guys golf etiquette went out the window. Sledging was prevalent amongst them and although I tried to maintain a degree of decorum and bite my tongue it did effect my golf game and I played poorly. There were accusations of throwing the flag stick, swearing and other unsavoury acts but as Buckingham Palace states in their dispute with Harry and Megs, recollections may be different depending on whom you are speaking to or who you believe. Now surely I wouldn’t be the one telling porkies !!!! Anyway, playing golf with these guys is like playing chess with a pigeon, no matter how good you’re playing these blokes are going to crap on you and strut around like they’re winning anyway. I should have told them that in order to insult me, I must first value their opinion. Nice try though.
LANDMARK TABLELANDS LIVESTOCK
We offer Auction Plus assessments on both sheep and cattle. Direct paddock sales, over the hook rates, Weekly stock sales in Carcoar (CTLX), Forbes, Dubbo & Wagga saleyards. Contact one of our Landmark Tablelands Livestock team. Paul Glynn (Molong & surrounding districts) – 0428 168 638 CTLX CATTLE 13 December Carcoar numbers reduced slightly to 962 good quality cattle for the last sale of 2022. It was a penning of good numbers of feeder steers particularly the heavy category and an offering of heavy cows. The regular buyers attended to a market of dearer trends. Limited numbers of light steers were available to restockers. Medium feeder steers sold to 505c/kg while the heavy drafts were 11c/kg better. Processor steers also sold to strong demand. Yearling heifers sold to dearer trends throughout. Light restockers were considerably dearer to feed and the medium weights were up to 10c/kg better. Heavy
grown steers sold to dearer trends as did the heifer portion. The cow market took to strong trends especially the heavy cows which were up to 15c/kg better. Heavy bulls sold to 300c/ kg and there was demand for numbers of yearling bulls to feed on. CTLX SHEEP 7 December Carcoar penned an extra 3444 units to total 10345 sheep and lambs with approximately 9000 lambs incuding new season . Most buyers attended to a good quality offering although drafts of the older lambs had dried off in the skin. Local restockers stepped in to send lambs back to the paddock. Trade lambs sold to a firm trend while the heavy trade lambs took on a dearer trend. Heavy lambs sold strongly as did the extra heavies as buyers found a shortage of product. New season lambs sold $186 to $210/head and hoggets to $139/head. Grown sheep took on a dearer trend particularly for the heavier drafts. Again buyers were left wanting with a shortage of kill in the South mostly in Victorian abbatoirs. Medium weights saw firm trends with the heavy ewes selling to most gain. Heavy crossbred ewes sold to $140/head. Drafts of lighter ewes also sold to slightly dearer trends.
It turned out that Bro was the winner with twenty three points with Bell second with twenty points. Quinney who played with Scott, Stubba and Bell suggested there may have been some rorting going on when the players handicaps were being discussed, especially since he came fourth with sixteen points. He may have been right because Al lost two golf balls during his round including one in the dam and still came third. The course is in great condition with the fairways having been mowed and the rough being reasonably short and many thanks to those who have been doing all the work. Here’s a bit of useless but relevant trivia. Did you know “facetious “ is the only word in the English language that uses all of the vowels, in order. This Sunday is the last Sunday before Christmas Day which also falls on a Sunday as does New Years Day. It would be great to see good numbers for our last organised golf event for the year, 8.30am for 9am.
