Life after Barnsey’s Life has mysterious ways of creating change in our lives. Why? Those who live with the belief of a higher being in control may well say “it is God’s way.” The Buddhist faith will simply say “this is your journey”. Those who believe in the power of the Universe may well say “this is what is meant to be”. For Jodie and Robert Laffin the decision to take a different road in life came with the delivery of children ready to be loved and cared for by a special family unit. When approached by Kate Redfern and Sally Brazier the creators of Lime & Stone in Bank Street to ask if the Laffin/Barnes families would be interested in selling to them Jodie said “let’s keep talking”. “We (Laffin/Barnes families) decided to continue making our way through 2022 as they had done with the previous years of COVID compliances - mouse plague, drought and economic downturn. “They were tough

years” said Jodie ... but we decided as a team - to keep going mainly because of our staff and our respect for Molong and our customers. Twelve months on - the decision was made. “It’s time” said Robert. “Our focus now is in raising our two new family members and spending more time with Connor and Keely.” The Laffin/Barnes extended family is one that is enviable where noticeably, the values of love, respect, care and compassion hold an important place. The same values have been enjoyed by local residents, past and present ... over 38 years of the Barnes/Laffin business presence in Molong. “We treat everyone as family at Barnsey’s” said Jodie. Be a tourist in your neighbourhood!

Orange Botanical Gardens, Adventure Playground and ‘eat botanic’ is a perfect combination for a leisurely drive - and just 25 minutes easy drive from Molong. A perfect day out for any age group - of easy walking - or just sitting in solitude enjoying the beautiful scenery.

There’s plenty of adventure and activity in the Adventure Playground adjoining the Orange Botanical Gardens, and the new cafe ‘eat botanic’ - eat in, outside tables and chairs or grab take-away for a picnic in the Adventure Playground or the botanical gardens. There’s plenty of room for families, people of all ages, easy access for the disabled, and a perfect place for hours of affordable enjoyment. Directions: From Molong head to Orange on the Mitchell Highway - turn left at the Northern Distributor - turn right at the roundabout to Hill Street - look to the left for the road and carpark leading to a fabulous day out.

THE COUNTRY WALK The Gardens incorporate the former Clover Hill farm which was set aside for the development in 1981. The unifying feature is the ‘country walk’ which winds through the site. The Gardens now cover 17 hectares and are owned and operated by Orange City Council with support from Friends of the Orange Botanic Gardens (FOBG) and other volunteer groups. As you enter the Gardens from the carpark you walk under a stone and metal archway which was donated by the Orange Garden Club in 1999. You will pass a line of large pin-oaks on your left as you walk up the path into the Clover Hill Gardens. On your left is the silver birch lawn which is underplanted with spring bulbs. On your right a path leads to the Sensory Garden, Weeping Elm Lawn, Viburnum Garden and the Winter garden. Many of the larger trees in this area are remnants of the original homestead garden. One of the Express’s favourite places for walking, eating and meeting new people like these gorgeous young men from Nepal - some now live in Orange - others were visiting from Sydney. They loved Express’ dog, R2 (Full name: Artoo Dogtoo)

Pop into the lovely new cafe located next to the Adventure Playground and just below the Orange Botanical Gardens. Say hello to the lovely Sacha Kukla (above) of ‘eat botanica’ who with her family have created the best place, food and space. Luv it!

Mary Mulhall awarded Honorary Life Membership of the Magpies

Mary Mulhall was awarded Honorary Life Membership last Saturday for her long and distinguished service to the Molong Magpies Rugby Union Club. Mary’s involvement has spanned decades from when husband Michael and children John and Brian played right through to the current day. Mary made her way to the sideline flanked by both Geurie and Molong players. It was fitting that the presentation landed on the Ladies day home game where a crowd of hundreds gathered to commemorate the occasion. Bob Sullivan, Molong Rugby and Central West Rugby stalwart was there to present the Honorary Life Membership by pinning the Life Membership Magpies Badge to a chuffed and honoured Mary Mulhall describing the long term friendship that they had over the years and the seemingly endless list of roles and responsibilities that had been fulfilled over the years

for the Molong Magpies Players, Committee and its supporters. In response Mary recounted to the crowd the joy and love that Rugby had bought to her over the years. With Mary’s family in the crowd a presentation of a beautiful bouquet of flowers from Peta Pineaha in appreciation of her efforts and support with the U6, 8 & U10 wallas community followed by another bouquet of flowers by President Matt Steventon on behalf of the Molong Rugby committee players and supporters. It was truly fitting that the Honorary Life Membership presentation was blessed by a mesmerising hymn sung by the Geurie team on the field where the harmonious tunes of the Fijian culture which most recently has trademarked Geurie’s team honoured the occasion. With that the day crept to an end where the crowd retired to the Freemasons hotel for the post match celebrations.

A local's View David Eccleston

writes for the Express on the Federal Election

Nine Years or Six Weeks So, it’s been nine years since Anthony Albanese was a productive Leader of the House of Representatives and briefly, Deputy Prime Minister. It’s been nine years since Tony Abbott led the Coalition to win the 2013 Election. Nine years of Coalition governments that an online news-site my younger son showed me yesterday, The Monthly.com.au, noted as, “the past nine years in Australian politics – the rorting and incompetence, laziness and cruelty”. In yesterday’s The Saturday Paper an opinion piece stated, “For nine years the [Coalition], along with the conservative media have worked hard to suggest that issues such as climate change, corruption … were … designed to distract voters.” It might seem my work for this column has been done but there is more to say, especially about divisiveness. Just as a positive aside, I would like to be a proud dad for a moment. Two days ago in a superb ceremony in Sydney my younger son was admitted as a lawyer in NSW by the impressive jurist, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. All thirteen years of his schooling were accomplished at Molong Central. After my schooling I encountered Tony Abbott in the 1970s when we were both studying at Sydney University. I thought – how nasty and close-minded is he. This first impression has been confirmed by decades of subsequent events, of constant rancour and divisiveness from Abbott. He became leader of the Liberal Party in 2009 using climate change/science denial to divide the Liberal Party and depose Malcolm Turnbull. That’s right, Abbott advocated no action on stopping the damage we were doing to the climate. He became prime minister in 2013 through his support of the misogyny against our first female prime minister and by his continuing denial of science and climate change. Abbott allowed climate damage to continue because it was not in the interests of business to take action against it. He and the Coalition put the interests of business ahead of the interests of people or both. His first make-the-rich-richer-and-the-poor-poorer budget in 2014 added to the divisions in Australian society. The rise of the teal independents in 2022 and the further division of the Liberal Party is a direct consequence of his climate change denial and inaction. Inaction and division that was maintained by the Morrison government. Just ask Matt Canavan. Yesterday it became public that Scott Morrison intends to reintroduce a Religious Discrimination Bill that would once again divide the Australian people and further divide the Coalition. He didn’t announce it, unusually. He informed the Churches through a letter – talk about a backhanded lack of moral courage masking as an act of Faith. No protection for anyone from unfair discrimination or job dismissal. Let’s be clear, someone’s sexuality is not a reason to discriminate against them. We are all created equal. This act will continue the divisiveness originated by

Letters

The Week That Was

Speaking of money. The most newsworthy event of the fourth week, also unquestionably, was the unwelcome and unexpectedly high rise in interest rates. Even less money in the pockets of many. Morrison’s economic credentials have been shredded. As was Josh Frydenberg by Jim Chalmers during the televised Treasurer’s Debate. All Frydenberg had was, “In 2019”, repeatedly. As Chalmers pointed out, repeatedly, “It’s 2022 Josh”. A growing number of impressive eminent jurists and distinguished Liberals, former or potential, have now advocated an end to the Morrison government

as unfit for office. Fred Chaney, an ex-deputy leader of the Liberal Party, wrote in the Herald, “the party I served has lost its way”, that we need “a return to good government rather than endless spin and politics”. Did anyone else notice Scotty say at a televised press conference after the interest rate rise, “It’s not about politics”, twice? This is a blatant lie, up there with “Shanghai Sam”. In an election campaign everything is about politics. What gets to me is the divisive disrespect and attempted manipulation of his listeners, of us. Incidentally Chaney advocated voting for independents as the only way to fix the Liberals. As did Malcolm Turnbull, another Liberal who has turned against the Morrison government. Stephen Rushton, another eminent jurist and thus usually non-committal on political campaigns, weighed in with the most impactful word of the week. He called Scotty a “buffoon”. He also stated that Scotty’s campaigning was undermining public confidence in its trust of the legal system. I know a bit about Australian political history and I have never seen this level of animosity towards a federal government from its taken-for-granted supporters. But the harshest words of the week belong to the editorial in The Saturday Paper, “If Morrison’s Australia seems unfeeling or mean or cruel, that’s because it is”. I would have gone with “government” rather than “Australia” but that’s how that editor feels. What fired me up were the editor’s words from the Australian propaganda sheet, I can’t call Darth Murdoch’s mouthpiece a newspaper again, “John Howard cut through … when he said electing ‘one of the anti-Liberal groupies’ … could have adverse longterm consequences for … the nation”. “Groupies” has now been repeated often, it is no longer just insensitive. It means immature, star-and-sex-driven women seeking validation through men. That’s right, the Liberals and the conservative press once more seek to position professional, high-achieving women as inferior, as objects for men to use. The misogyny of the Abbott years of division is still with us.

For the conservative minded it was hard going

Thursday 28 April edition of the Express was great reading! However, for the conservative minded, page 5 was hard going indeed. I am sure David Eccleston’s opinion on the last federal parliament isn’t informed by all the facts! Perhaps he has listened to some of the facts – maybe on Prime Minister Billy McMahon’s government (Country Party leader and Deputy PM John McEwen threatened to split the Coalition if its Liberal Party partners elected then deputy leader Bill McMahon to the leadership in December 1967. It elected John Gorton to succeed Prime Minister Harold Holt after his untimely

6

Tony Abbott. How mean is it? To do it again? As well as the divisiveness let’s add to Morrison’s e x t e n s i v e incompetent list – the mismanaged and cruel Robodebt scandal has cost many lives, as well as millions of our hard-earned in compensation. J o b K e e p e r , although noble in intention – a shout out to the unions who originated it – was so poorly organised it has also cost us, the Tevis Ecclestone at the NSW taxpayers, the Supreme Court people, tens of millions, given to businesses who are allowed to keep it in spite of the vast profits they made. What a waste of our money.

death in the Portsea surf.) We’ll just have to agree to disagree about the rest. Also on page 5 is Robert Lee’s evangelical advocacy of that luxury belief about climate change. Competent land and livestock manager that he is, surely he must understand history; that the climate has never stopped changing. There were always extreme events; even one is too many! Hasn’t he listened to his parents’ and grandparents’ generations speak about extreme weather events of their days? Think of the flooding of the 50’s, the dreadful dust storms of the 40’s. Think about landform; surely the extreme events that formed what we see today

MOLONG EXPRESS, Thursday 12 May 2022

didn’t suddenly stop for our generation! I label it a “luxury belief” because it leads to the phasing out of affordable and reliable coal fired power in favour of sunshine and wind to power the electricity grid; reducing CO2 emissions is the holy grail in the hope that there will be fewer climate extremes. As a result, electricity becomes unaffordable to many households. Wealthy people will have no trouble paying the electricity bill even when it becomes a luxury as prices rise and rise. But what will become of those struggling to make ends meet at today’s electricity prices? This scenario is playing out already for the world’s leaders in so

called renewable electricity; Germany and California. Our opinion leaders’ whole approach to climate change is wrong headed. Consider what our forefathers coped with. Consider how landform came about. Consider and understand that “The earth is the LORD’s and everything in it, the world and all who live in it, for he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters.” (From Psalm 24 in the Bible). Shouldn't we therefore seek our Lord's wisdom and comply with his plan for us and our world as revealed in his written word? Dougal Pottie, Molong

BOOST TO MENTAL HEALTH IN CALARE Residents across Calare will have easier access to mental health services with the Australian Government announcing a new Head to Health adult mental health satellite for the region. The Head to Health satellite service will be commissioned by Western New South Wales Primary Health Network (PHN), which will receive a total of $3.4 million over four years to establish and operate the satellite. Head to Health satellite services, like the one being established here in Calare are designed to provide a welcoming, low stigma, ‘no wrong door’, entry point for adults to access mental health information, services and supports. The services will be free, and referrals will be able to be made for more

intensive mental health care or social supports if needed. You don’t have to go it alone and anyone who is worried about their own or a loved one’s mental health should make use of the centre when it is up and running. The PHN will consult with the community to determine the exact location and ensure that the services provide support in a way that meets the needs of our community. Anyone experiencing distress can seek immediate advice and support through Lifeline - 13 11 14, Beyond Blue - 1300 22 4636, Kids Helpline - 1800 55 1800, or the Government’s digital mental health gateway, Head to Health - www.headtohealth.gov.au.

EASING COST OF LIVING PRESSURES • A one-off $250 cost of living payment for pensioners and concession card holders • Reduced petrol prices thanks to the Australian Government’s decision to halve the fuel excise • Childcare support has been increased to a record $11 billion a year, helping 5,400 local families, and we have increased the subsidies available to families with multiple children in care. • Electricity prices have fallen 8% over the last two years and our policies have helped residents install 21,700 solar panels in our region. • Tax relief of up to $1,500 this year, made up of the $1,080 low and middle income tax offset and a $420 cost of living tax offset • Record spending on education, health, and the NDIS While we can be proud that Australia has always been a nation that has strived for equality in opportunity, recent cost of living increases are adding real pressures and stress to our local residents, families and households. Affordable housing is a particular concern and the Budget delivered an additional $2 billion for more social and affordable homes, as well as the new Regional Home Guarantee scheme. We are also providing around $5.1 billion a year to support 1.4 million people through Commonwealth Rent Assistance. The Budget also provided significant investments to help ease some of the more common cost of living pressures, including:

MORE PROGRESS FOR DIXONS LONG POINT CROSSING! We’ve had another win for the Dixons Long Point Crossing with $5 million secured to commence Stage 2. Stage 1 of the project will see the bridge constructed and upgrades to one kilometre of the approach road on the Cabonne side and two kilometres on the Mudgee side. This $5 million for Stage 2 will see the gravel roads beyond the immediate approaches commenced to be sealed and upgraded. More funding to upgrade the approaching roads will be needed as the work progresses and the Australian Government will provide it. This critical crossing will provide huge economic and tourism benefits by opening up access between the wider Central West region and the Hunter Valley. It will slash travel times and connect the local government areas of Dubbo Regional, Mudgee/Mid-Western Regional, Bathurst, Cabonne, and Orange. Residents across the Central West have been calling for this for generations and I am pleased that together we have now secured a total of $34.8 million in Australian Government funding. The project is moving forward, with the tender process now underway. Pictured: Concept designs for the new bridge (above left) and geotechnical work at the site (right).

IMPROVING HEALTHCARE FOR OUR REGION Our future healthcare professionals will be able to do more of their training right here in our electorate thanks to a new Regional Training Hub. The hub, run by Western Sydney University (WSU) will support medical students to train across the electorate, including those studying at the WSUCharles Sturt University Joint Program in Medicine. It is great for our region! We are growing our local pool of talented health professionals, and this Regional Training Hub will further encourage that by providing support, advice, training and opportunities for medical students, graduates, doctors and supervisors keen to practice medicine in our region.

Working with our community I have achieved a lot for healthcare in our region: - The Molong Multipurpose Service - A 24-hour rescue chopper - Free MRI scans at our major hospitals, claimable on Medicare - Increased radiotherapy services - The CSU medical school - Additional university places so more students can study medicine at rural campuses Few things are more important to regional communities than quality healthcare and I will continue fighting for our community to ensure we get the health services we need.

STUART TOWN MULTICULTURAL FESTIVAL What a wonderful day at Stuart Town’s Multicultural Festival! Thank you to Ben Penhall and his team at Stuart Town Action Group for all their hard work in organising and hosting such an outstanding event for our region.

RUGBY UNION

Wallas Gala Day starts season Thanks to Brett Murdock

The next generation of the Molong Magpies had their first hit out at the Wellington Gala Day played at Rygate Oval Wellington last Sunday 8 May 2022. U6 played Wellington, Forbes and Dubbo, U8 played Wellington Red & White and U10 again, Wellington Red & White. Under the coaching staff of Tony Elliott U10, Dean Butler U8 and Mark Gavin U6, the future of the club looks bright. With minimal preparation due to school holidays and rained out training days, the young Magpies showed great promise with all teams holding their own in each game.

Players of the day were U6 Reilly Elliott for his enthusiasm, U8 Guy Shannon for his defensive effort and U10 Tom Salter for his drive around the paddock. The Toughest Player award went to Hunter Roberts for his tackling. A big thankyou to the Wellington Club for hosting the day in brilliant sunshine and well run as always. Next week sees the club venturing to Orange Emus Gala Day on Sunday 15 May. Note: The club is short of players in the U8 team (ages 7 & 8) and welcomes all comers. JUNIOR SOCCER

16 Teams kick off the Soccer Season

Thanks Ralph Crystall

Molong Soccer kicked off with the first round of Soccer in Orange on Saturday. The club has grown from strength to strength and this year the club has 16 teams playing from U5's to U11's. It was a cold start to the first games of the season, but the U5's teams playing their first game of soccer. All played well and received a Soccer Ball from Orange District Football Association (ODFA) as a welcome gift to soccer. There were many great reports from teams who have had a great start to the season, these are just a few from the day. Under 5 Condors coached by Ralph Chrystall had a great game with plenty of goals. The Player of the Week went to Joey Piggot for an outstanding game. Under 5 Currawongs coached by Bec Scott-Smith had an interesting game with Bobby Piggot scoring many goals and Alize Stojanov receiving the Medal for Player of the Week. Under 5 Phoenix coached by Steve Ewin had a steady start but with help from team mates from Condors and Currawongs had a great result. Charlotte Bailey received Medal for Player of the week.

Under 6 Peewees coached by Tamra May-Brell had a fantastic game, and Conner Thorne who played his first ever game did so well and received the Player of the Week medal. Under 9 Galahs, coached by Penny Webb had a tough first round match but they played their hearts out, and it was a 2-2 draw at the end of the game, with Isaac Thurtell being awarded the Best and Fairest on the day. U11's Magpies, coached by Lenny Punch played against OAG's team, both teams played a strong game with Magpies scoring in the first half of the game. They had great defence and were able to hold OAG's off from getting a goal 1-0 at full time. Thomas Gavin was awardws the Player of the Week. The next round of Soccer will be at home at Hunter Caldwell in Molong this Saturday with the first game starting at 9.00am. MDSC - Proudly sponsored by AMP

RUGBY UNION

Magpies over Goats on Ladies Day Matt Steventon Ladies Day for the Molong Magpies never ceases to impress and last weekend at the Rec it was another fantastic turnout to watch the Molong Magpies take on the Geurie Goats. Molong have had a great turnout at training and with Heba from Downtown fitness drilling the players on Tuesday nights the team is looking fit heading into Round 2 of the Oils Plus North Competition. Molong kicked off and headed up in a straight line of defence ready to take on the ever eager Geurie side however from the get go it was clear that the flamboyant and impulsive visitors were not going to play textbook rugby. The Magpies pressed the visitors line from the get go however their defence kept the Magpies at bay for the first 20 minutes before the Mighty Magpies attack and persistence placed Woody Mann in the box seat to fly over the line for the first try and with the conversion successful by number 10 Will Oldham it was 7-0. It wasn’t long before Simon Dowling charged over for another 5 points to bring the score to 12-0 a penalty was given to Molong within striking distance where Will Oldham safely put the ball between the posts and it looked to close out the half at 15-0 however the disruptive nature of play presented by Geurie with stripped ball a consistent tactic and solid defence The Goats number 4 Viliame Turuva steamed over for a try slipping between the backline with a well angled attack leaving a 15-5 halftime tally. With the sun shining through the clouds it took the edge off the brisk afternoon the wood

raffle tickets were selling fast as were the Molong Magpie beanies from the merchandise stand. Sausage sandwiches were hot thanks to Jack Mann and Barnie White. Heading into the second half both teams had a sense of urgency and it was Riley White who layed the first points down converting his try the score now 22-5. The Goats were letting the game get away however the stop start nature of the game and for bit of dropped ball from both teams made for hard watching. Riley White managed to add to the total with a penalty goal resulting from offside play increasing the lead 25-5. Geurie surged forward to score a 5 pointer and Molong’s number 8 Jordan Packham responded shortly after around the 35 minute mark with a 5 pointer of his own in defiance bringing the score 30-10. The tussle continued to the final minute where Geurie scored the final points of the day leaving the score 30-15 for a Magpies win leaving both teams heading for the side line. The action was not done there with both sides clapping each other off. It was a day for celebration as Mary Mulhall was to be awarded for her long and distinguished service to the Molong Magpies Rugby Union Club. Next weeks game will be held in Sydney at the Eastern Suburbs Rugby Oval at 5pm where Molong will play Canowindra after Sydney Uni take on Eastern Suburbs. We encourage all supporters to make it to support The Mighty Molong Magpies!’

REG’S BENCH A blonde goes into work one morning crying her eyes out. Her boss, concerned about his employee's well being, asks sympathetically, "What's the matter?" The blonde replies, "Early this morning I got a phone call saying that my mother had passed away." "I'm terribly sorry to hear that. Why don't you go home for the day... we aren't terribly busy. Just take the day off to relax and rest." The blonde very calmly explains, "No, I'd be better off here. I need to keep my mind off it and I have the best chance of doing that here." The boss agrees and allows the blonde to work as usual. "If you need anything, just let me know," he says. A few hours pass and the boss decides to check on her. He looks out over his office and sees the blonde crying hysterically. He rushes out to her, and asks, "Are you going to be okay? Is there anything I can do to help?" "No," replies the blonde, "I just got a call from my sister, and she said that HER mom died too!" After having dug to a depth of 10 feet last year, British scientists found traces of copper wire dating back 200 years and came to the conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone network more than 150 years ago. Not to be outdone by the British, in the weeks that followed, an American archaeologist dug to a depth of 20 feet, and shortly after, a story published in the New York Times: "American archaeologists, finding traces of 250-year-old copper wire, have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network 50 years earlier than the British". One week later, Australia's Northern Territory Times, reported the following: "After digging as deep as 30 feet in his backyard in Tennant Creek, Northern Territory, Billi Bunji, a self-taught archaeologist, reported that he found absolutely nothing. Billi has therefore concluded that 250 years ago, Australia had already gone wireless..." Makes me feel bloody proud to be Australian! Can’t believe what I saw in McDonald’s today. An old man placed an order for one hamburger , French fries and a drink. He unwrapped the plain hamburger and carefully cut it in half , placing one half in front of his wife. French fries , dividing them into two piles and neatly placed one pile in front of his wife. He took a sip of the drink , his wife took a sip and then set the cup down between them. As he began to eat his few bites of hamburger , the people around them were looking over and whispering. Obviously they were thinking , 'That poor old couple - all they can afford is one meal for the two of them.' As the man began to eat his fries a young man came to the table and politely offered to buy another meal for the old couple. The old man said , they were just fine - they were used to sharing everything.. People closer to the table noticed the little old lady hadn't eaten a bite. She sat there watching her husband eat and occasionally taking turns sipping the drink. Again , the young man came over and begged them to let him buy another meal for them. This time the old woman said 'No , thank you , we are used to sharing everything.' Finally , as the old man finished and was wiping his face neatly with the napkin , the young man again came over to the little old lady who had yet to eat a single bite of food and asked 'What is it you are waiting for?' She answered 'THE TEETH'. ” I've managed to build a car entirely out of washing machine parts. Tomorrow I'm taking it out for a spin....

There was a slight decrease in numbers and the quality was mostly good. The offering consisted mainly of yearlings suiting the feeder orders and cows suiting the processors, with lines of PTIC to suit the restockers. There were a few good lines of well-bred weaners retuning to the paddock and a limited supply of grown cattle. All the usual buyers were operating in a mostly strong market. Yearling steers to suit the trade were firm to a few cents better, selling from 480c to 561c/kg. Yearling heifers to processors were also dearer, making from 480c to 555c/ kg. Feedlot buyers were very competitive. Feeder steers lifted 5c, receiving from 480c to 630c, and medium weight heifers to feed averaged 560c/kg. Well-bred weaner steers were dearer ranging from 590c to 715c/ kg. The heifer portion also attracted strong competition selling from 570c to 620c/kg.

It was a plainer quality yarding than the previous sale though there were still some very good heavy weight lambs along with odd pens of trade weights. There were a few pens of Merino lambs yarded along with good numbers of Merino hoggets. Not all the regular buyers were present with the absence of a major supermarket operator. Lightweight lambs to the processors were around firm with the 12kg to 18kg 2 scores selling from $115 to $142/head. Trade lambs were firm to $5 cheaper selling from $140 to $210 to average between 790c to 840c/kg cwt. Heavy weight lambs up to 26kg were $5 dearer while the heavier weights were firm to $5/head cheaper. 24kg to 30kg lambs sold from $200 to $234 while the heavier weights over 30kg sold from $240 to $261/head to average 770c/kg cwt. Molong Golf

There were thirteen players at Royal Molong golf course on Sunday where a twelve hole ambrose event was played. The ambrose event seems the most popular event where I guess if you hit a bad shot then you hope your partner will hit a reasonably good shot. There were five teams of two and a team of three where for the second week in a row Matt P. was in the winning team this time with Roger. The runners up were Jess and Justin. Thanks to Justin for organising golf this week. Bro reports that Matt was really strong on golf etiquette this week, making sure the sand scrapper was placed behind the green and the sand cup emptied after the last player had putted out which is how it should be on every hole. A fellow by the name of Peter from Paynesville in Victoria was staying at the showground caravan park and was having a hit of golf by himself. He caught up to us after several holes and Stubba invited him to join us. He seemed an ok golfer, nice easy swing and keeping his ball on the fairway. It wasn’t long

before we bought him down to our level. He pushed his tee shot on the fifth out to the right, put another notch on the branch in front of the eighth (as did Stubba) and topped his tee shot on the ninth, and took it all in good fun and joined us for our bbq. It was also good to see Jack Mann having a hit with us. Not sure how he went but Jack seems to enjoy himself no matter what he’s doing. Stubba had problems with trees being in his way when playing some of his shots and wondered whether there was anything in the rules of golf that prevented him from carrying a chainsaw in the golf cart to remove such obstacles. Thanks to Bell for again providing rissoles for the bbq and to her and Stubba for cooking said bbq and Bro for cleaning the bbq plate. The Yeoval Open tournament is on this Sunday and I believe some of the Molong players are attending this event. Golf will still be played at Royal Molong this Sunday, 8.30am for 9am as usual. Everyone is welcome to join us.

Molong Bowls Margot Well “Jacky Frost” has arrived. With plenty of bowls on Saturday the green keeps had their work cut out with a nice cover of “frost” on the greens. By 10.30am the greens were pristine and ready for some exciting bowling. The ladies’ pairs were played morning and afternoon with the new pair’s champions being Narelle McKenzie and Jody Murray. The new champs played unbeatable bowls, not sure if it was luck or just class, but either way the ladies earned their title as “Champions”. Congratulations Narelle & Jody. There was a good crowd gathered around the greens, encouraging the ladies. Some should have remained quiet at times (Judy) not really knowing who to go for, then we had some past members being thrown in the ring as well. Lots of banter and laughter, along with cursing at some bad shots were heard as well. The men played their singles with wins to Chris Beatty, Ben Brown, Craig Troth and Kevin Beatty. These 4 now play the next stage with Chris v Kevin and Ben v Craig. Will be some great bowls when they meet. Good luck to you all. The men also had a good crowd encouraging them on. The Molong Ladies Presidents Day will be held on 4 June. If you would like to put your names down, there will be a list on the notice

board at the club. The Members draw of $275 didn’t go off on Saturday night, bad luck Smithy. If you are a member of the club, come along on Saturday night. You might go home a little richer than when you arrived. This Saturday will be $300. Good to see the travelling caravaners utilise the free camping at the bowlo. We get some funny characters come over and have a few beverages and tell a few yarns. Be surprised who you meet and who knows who around the traps. We cater for all events at the Club. Just give Janelle a ring and discuss any events you might be planning or enquire on 0418 637 641. The club also has a curtesy bus available if needed. This must be pre organised with the club and radius is 5km from the club. The club had a great pizza night, catering for the Molong Magpies Cricket Club’s Presentation night, with orders coming in thick and fast from the public as well. The cricketers thoroughly enjoyed the pizzas and cold beverages, along with plenty of laughter coming from the auditorium from the awards that were being handed out to worthy recipients. Thanks for coming Magpies. Remember we now have “Stone & Wood” craft beer on tap which is proving very popular.
