Molong Pharmacy gets a makeover

Town Talk

In more ways than one. In yet another Bank St development Sue and Alice are refitting the pharmacy with a brand new layout and fixtures (last undertaken following the flood of 2005). But did you know that Sue and Alice have been carefully recording prescriptions in the “Prescription Book” since at least 1916 - in Latin no less. Sue found one of her old books while preparing for the renos. (R) These days Jake and co. simply tap away at the computer. We bet that Sue and Alice will miss the old ways.

The little things we don’t notice! Thank you to Cabonne Council team who have somehow fitted in the painting of the fence on the Euchareena Road/ Molong Creek bridge. How do they do it - given the continuing problem of damaged roads, footpaths and keeping up with the massive role of mowing and gardening public spaces across Cabonne Country?

(Above) OPEN GARDEN @ Wendy and David McNab’s Saturday 19 March 10 am to 3 pm (Directions - Follow Banjo Paterson Way towards Cumnock turn left into 76 Springvale Lane (signs will give directions on the day). The location for the event is just a few kms from Molong on the left hand side. This is going to be a fantastic day with some 20 market stalls - bush music by the popular November Shorn, a chance to wander the McNab’s gardens - and the opportunity to check out vintage cars trucks and tractors owned by David and the McKenzie boys (Norm, Brian, Andy), time to enjoy a BBQ lunch, coffee, or to sit quietly and enjoy the magical landscape. Entry by gold coin donation. Auction of amazing goods at 1 pm with all proceeds to support the work of two very worthwhile community support programs - The Molong Pantry and Mental Health. The Express came across these two young blokes at last Friday night’s BRAG bowls. Both Rodney Clyde (above left) and David Dean were raised in town and attended the Molong Central School. Rodney has returned to town after living adventures up north ... David (still living up north) returns often with lovely wife Laurel to visit Tommy Dean, extended family and friends. Note: Were either of these Molong ‘kids’ this serious? Maybe they were apprehensive about the tough competition they were facing from opposition teams at Molong’s (infamous!) BRAG?

“We’re helping to save the world” said one of these little cuties from the Molong Early Learning Centre who walked around town doing their bit for last week’s Clean Up Australia event. With plastic gloves and bags - the children were supervised by the enthusiastic team from the centre. “We ask our teachers first before we pick up rubbish” said one of the children. With the little orange safety jackets on - a number of shoppers in Bank Street stopped to say hello and to congratulate the children (and teachers) on their initiative.

At the Molong Entertainment Centre Megaplex Well done to Kim and Dave Stojanov of Molong’s Freemasons Hotel who brought the dynamic Amber Lawrence to town last Friday night to entertain from the new courtyard stage. The large crowd of Cabonne Country residents and visitors from Sydney and elsewhere delighted in being entertained by the popular country singer and song writer. From all reports - it was a sensational night. We hear Travis Collins is on his way to perform again (soon) at the Freemasons. Grab the Express, take notice of posters around town and stay alert ... Molong is fast becoming a centre for great entertainment. (R) Kim Stojanov with Amber at the pub before the show.

Molong to be focus of Western NSW disc golf tour Kevin Costa

As Disc Golf continues to grow across Australia, Molong is quickly developing a reputation as one of the most sought after venues to take part in this highly addictive sport. Just a week after 200 of the country’s top players took to the course at the Australian Disc Golf Championships in Geelong, Molong-based Central West Disc Golf Club has announced that it will feature heavily in the newly developed Western NSW Disc Golf Tour. Featuring six official PDGA (Professional Disc Golf Association) events the Western NSW Tour will see large numbers of players take to the courses at Molong and Dubbo competing for points and the sought after tour trophies. The first leg of the tour will see The Molong Cup taking place on the 9th of April at the Molong Disc Golf Course (located on the grounds of the Molong Golf Course) and will see players from as far afield as Newcastle, Sydney, Canberra, Molong and Dubbo travelling to compete in the one-day event which will be played as two rounds of a

specially designed 14 hole layout. “We are very excited to be hosting these events here in Molong” said CWDG Secretary Sharon Costa “it gives us a chance to showcase our beautiful course and the lovely town of Molong to players who are travelling long distances to be a part of these events.” Molong will also host the twoday Central West Cold Snap in August, while Dubbo Disc Golf will host the local legs of the Women’s Global and Aussie Disc Golf Day events, with their feature event for the year being the Dubbo Charge in Sepetember. The big event on the tour, however, will be the NSW Open, the peak Disc Golf event in NSW this year, which will be held here in Molong over three days of the October Long weekend. This tournament could attract up to 200 of the top players from right across the country to Molong. A great coup for our little town. Kyle Warner throwing through the infamous "Triple Mando" on hole 7 at the Molong Disc Golf Course

The east coast rain seems endless. Where on Earth is all the water coming from? At any one time, Earth’s atmosphere holds only about a week’s worth of rain. But rainfall and floods have devastated Australia’s eastern regions for weeks and more heavy rain is forecast. So where’s all this water coming from? We recently investigated the physical processes driving rainfall in eastern Australia. By following moisture from the oceans to the land, we worked out exactly how three oceans feed water to the atmosphere, conspiring to deliver deluges of rain similar to what we’re seeing now. Such research is important. A better understanding of how water moves through the atmosphere is vital to more accurately forecast severe weather and help communities prepare. The task takes on greater urgency under climate change, when heavy rainfall and other weather extremes are expected to become more frequent and violent. Big actors delivering rain The past few months in eastern Australia have been very wet, including the rainiest November on record. Then in February, heavy rain fell on already saturated catchments. In fact, parts of Australia received more than triple the rain expected at this time of year. So what’s going on? In the theatre that is Australia’s rainfall, there are some big actors – the so-called climate oscillations. They’re officially known as: El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO): this cycle comprises El Niño and its opposite, La Niña. ENSO involves temperature changes across the tropical Pacific Ocean, affecting weather patterns around the world Southern Annular Mode (SAM): the north-south movement of strong westerly winds over the Southern Ocean Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD): changes in ocean temperatures and winds across the tropical Indian Ocean. Like swings in a character’s mood, each climate mode has positive, negative and neutral phases. Each affect Australia’s weather in different ways. ENSO’s negative phase, La Niña, brings wetter conditions to eastern Australia. The IOD’s negative phase, and SAM’s positive phase, can also bring more rain. Going back in time

We studied what happens to the moisture supplying eastern Australian rainfall when these climate drivers are in their wet and dry phases. We used a sophisticated model to trace moisture backwards in time: from where it fell as rain, back through the atmosphere to where it evaporated from. We did this for every wet winter and spring day between 1979 and 2013. This research was part of a broader study into where Australia’s rain comes from, and what changes moisture supply during both drought and heavy rain. We found most rain that falls on eastern Australia comes from moisture evaporated from a nearby ocean. Typically, rain in eastern Australia comes from the Coral and Tasman seas. This is depicted in the strong blue colours in the figure below. But interestingly, some water comes from as far as the Southern and Indian oceans, and some originates from nearby land areas, such as forests, bare soils, lakes and rivers. Natural processes can alter the typical supply of moisture to the atmosphere, causing either droughts or floods. Our research shows of all possible combinations of climate oscillations, a La Niña and a positive SAM phase occurring together has the biggest effect on eastern Australian rainfall. That combination is happening right now. During La Niña, more moisture is transported from the ocean to the atmosphere over land and is more easily converted to rainfall when it arrives. During the positive SAM, the usual westerly winds shift southward, allowing moistureladen winds from the east to flow into eastern Australia. Our research focused on winter and spring.

However, we expect the current rainfall is the result of the same combined effect of the two climate oscillations. The Indian Ocean Dipole is not active at this time of the year. But it was in a weak negative phase last spring, which tends to bring wetter-thannormal conditions. Looking to future floods Under climate change, extreme La Niña and El Niño events, and weather systems like those causing the current floods, are expected to worsen. So reducing greenhouse gas

emissions is crucial. The current La Niña event is past its peak and is predicted to dissipate in autumn. But because our catchments are so full of water, we still need to be on alert for extreme weather. The current devastating floods are a sobering lesson for the future. They show the urgent need to understand and predict extreme events, so communities can get ready for them.

SWIMMING Small Towns Shield to Molong after 25 years!

The Molong Swimming Club captured the Small Towns Shield on Saturday (against Yeoval, Cumnock, Manildra and Cudal swimming clubs) for the first time in 25 years. Saturday’s swimming carnival, this year hosted by Molong, saw hundreds of young swimmers, parents and spectators crowd the pool and surrounding streets. Molong’s Kate Strahorn said “All of our swimmers over the season have contributed to this fantastic result and thanked MSC swimmers for their continued dedication to the team including Conrad and his committee for their coordination of the season, carnivals, catering

and fundraising; Coaches for their tireless effort each week at training and at the carnivals; Parents for supporting us and volunteering when needed and the parent swim team for their amazing swim. Molong were also runners up in the Juniors Shield and claimed shields for the Medley Relays, Sub Junior and Senior competitions.Cabonne Cabonne Mayor Kevin Beatty was on hand to present the trophies and reaffirmed Cabonnes’s commitment to its seven town swimming pools - a treasured hub of communities during the hot summers.

Autumn: and more on seeds

A weekly column by Rozzi and contributors by Les Dean Welcome to Autumn, the busiest time of the year in the garden, out with the old spent plants such as your tomatoes that have just about finished, and what a disappointing year for them, and either sowing or planting those cold loving plants such as cabbage etc. Also time to think about Spring and garden favorites such as bulbs and renovating the soil and resting it over the colder months.

A good time to check the Ph of your soil, digging in some compost and replacing lost nutrients. It’s also a good time to check over your leftover or stored seed, checking the “best before or use-by date”. Sometimes we don’t realize that seed losers its viability over time especially if it is not stored correctly, and always check the label which can reveal such things as what time of the year you should be sowing or planting your vegies into the garden. For instance, the packet of snow peas I was checking last week reveals that the seed is good for two years and also shows a graph indicating that in this climatic region they can be sown any old time now. So can you save and store your own seed from year to year. Well yes you can with some reservations, there are quite a few things and restrictions to consider. Commercial seed producers worldwide breed plant varieties with the end products in mind, bigger yields, faster maturity, pleasing to the eye of the supermarket shopper, the list goes on. But to achieve this many species are cross pollinated with a similar variety, with a distinct possibility that the resulting seed will be infertile and or not grow to the standard of the parent. Also, many breeders register their new variety under the Plant Breeders Rights Act which limit your legal right to propagate their plant. But wait, time to take a step backwards to the good old true varieties of yester-year. (Continued next page)

Grazing for Drought workshop

On Thursday the 17th March, Central Tablelands Landcare, in collaboration with local mentor Ian Chapman will be hosting a workshop in Stuart Town to demonstrate the advantages of Adaptive Planned Grazing. Graziers and farmers are invited to attend this free, interactive day where we'll hear from experienced trainers and mentors and see the results of this practical grazing technique.

A weekly column by Rozzi and contributors

What is Adaptive Planned Grazing (APG)?

(Continued from page 7) There is a group in Australia known as the Seed Savers Network that are doing just that and sharing the seed amongst network members. Google “seedsavers.net” or go to a site I found interesting ‘Bega Valley Seed Savers. More next week, perhaps we could start a group of our own. Collecting and using your own Eucalyptus seed is quite simple and similar to all other seed collection you may wish to undertake. • Make sure the seed is ripe, you should check you parent tree approx. 3 months from flowering. Figure one shows 3 distinct stages in the production of seed, buds, ripe fruit with the valves clearly hardened off and ready to open, and too late, valves opened and seed gone. Note that the actual seed of Eucalypts is extremely small, mostly resembling sawdust. • Remove the small branches with capsules attached and place on a tarp or plastic in a warm shed to open. Figure two shows the results, simply sieve off the trash and recover your seed. • Four things will destroy your stored seed very

quickly, mold from too much moisture, insects such as weevils, time, and heat. All my stored Eucalyptus and similar seed was stored in plastic at 4deg C in a fridge and used as soon as possible. Pots used to grow your seed largely depends on the plant being grown and how long it will be in the container for. Figure 3 shows the possibilities, from shallow trays to deep pots. • The familiar shallow seedling tray and larger commercial tray (left) used for your vegie seedlings, quickly turned over before seedlings become overgrown and rootbound. • The forestry tubes on the right are ideal for slower growing varieties such as Eucalypts that may stay in the pot for six months or longer. The tube has root guiding ribs to direct the roots to the bottom of the tube, where they are suspended in the tray and air pruned, roots including the all important tap root ready to develop deep into the soil once planted. Happy Gardening, Les

APG is a tool. It is helpful in good times and during drought. Land managers who use APG effectively can quickly respond to climate, rainfall, and economic factors, providing opportunities to make the most of high/low livestock prices and adjust the stock density to make the most available feed. Put simply, APG involves high stock densities and a high rotation frequency. Ideally, you would have all your stock in one mob, rotating every day or two through smaller paddocks to get increased ground disturbance, the concentration of manure, and optimum feed utilisation. Paddocks are then left to rest and recover for an extended period before being grazed again. This technique mimics how wild herd animals graze, stimulates more diverse plant species, and builds soil health and structure.

the tools to see the land recover more quickly after being grazed and bounce back faster after drought. Would you like to increase the diversity of grasses and perennial species in your paddocks? Then you won't want to miss this casual, on-farm workshop. Set on Ian Chapmans' property, where attendees can see for themselves the remarkable results of Adaptive Planned Grazing. The workshop alone will provide some valuable insights into how you can improve your grazing enterprise. For those keen to push their farm's sustainable production potential, there is the choice to take on further, generously subsidised training and/or funding to set up a trial on-farm with ongoing support from mentors. If you can't make it to the Stuart Town workshop, don't despair! There are upcoming workshops in Bathurst & Gulgong visit: watershedlandcare/events for more info and to get your free tickets. Upcoming workshop in Stuart Town, Thursday 17th March, 10 AM – 4 PM

Here is an exciting opportunity for local graziers to attend a free one-day workshop. You'll get to see presentations from experienced land managers, Resource Consulting Services and Holistic Management trainers. You'll leave the day with an understanding of how to estimate how much feed you have on pasture and adjust stock numbers accordingly. You will learn

A bountiful harvest in Molong’s home-gardens by Rozzi

A weekly column by Rozzi and contributors

(R) This week’s Gatekeeper’s harvest waiting for the pot - soups, chutneys, pasta sauce, casseroles (add beef, chicken, fish, lentils). Tomatoes, grapes, mint, chilli, cucumber? ... Cooked together? You bet! Serve with a garnish of Marigold petals or Nasturtiums or other edible flowers

The recent rain in Molong has helped to keep my late plantings of tomatoes, apple cucumbers, herbs, chilli and edible flowers filling my kitchen baskets - jars and pots. After planting every variety of tomato seedlings that helped me to start my nursery biz - I can now share ... 1. My favourite tomato is the heritage beauty Rouge de Marmande. 2. My favourite truss tomato? Patio Prize. 3. Companion Planting my tomato plants with Basil (Sweet) and Marigolds (edible flowers) achieved huge success in keeping pests away - and vegies free of sprays.

QUICK CROSSWORD

There was an Englishman, an Irishman and a Scotsman all sitting having a break on a building site. The Englishman says 'if my wife puts cheese on my sandwiches again I'm going to kill myself' and the Irishman says 'if my wife puts egg on my sandwiches again I will kill myself' and the Scotsman says 'if I find marmite on my sandwiches again I will kill myself'. So sure enough the next day all three open up their lunch boxes and find the sandwich's are all full of cheese, egg and Marmite once again so they all go off to different parts of the site and kill themselves. Later in the week all three men are being buried and the Englishman's wife says "if he didn't want cheese on his sandwiches he should have told me and this wouldn't have happened". Then the Scotsman's wife comes away with the same statement concerning the Marmite sandwiches. Then the Irishman's wife pipe's up "I can't understand this, He make's his own sandwiches."

Cudal Into Grand Final And Premiers Canowindra Eliminated.

As it has many times this season, wet weather has dictated results in today’s Semi Finals. Cudal are the first team into the Grand Final. Batting first Cudal only managed a moderate total of 9 for 143 at Dean Park. Normally that wouldn’t be enough on that oval. Adam Clunes top scoring with 43. Damian Hayes 4 for 31 Country’s best. In reply Country were struggling at 1 for 9 after 9 overs when the heavens opened up and the match washed out. Being Minor Premiers Cudal automatically go through to the GF. At Molong Magpies sent Canowindra in. The Canowindra batsman struggled against some good bowling and better fielding than the previous week. Sam Austin top scored with 28 but he had little support from his team mates as

Canowindra limped to 40 overs at 9 for 92. Spin was Canowindra’s undoing as Ben Brown, Chris Beatty and Dylan Wilson wreaked havoc. Brown and Wilson taking 3 wickets each. In reply Magpies too struggled and were 4 for 40 when a storm ended the match prematurely. Without rain the match would no doubt have gone down to nail biting finish. Canowindra unluckily eliminated due to finishing 4th, however they accepted the situation graciously with great sportsmanship. We look forward to seeing them again next season. NEXT SATURDAY’S FINAL Molong Magpies V Country Dr Ross Memorial Oval, Molong Umpire - Allan Hubbard Winner plays Cudal in GF, loser is eliminated.

Only seven players for golf at Royal Molong on Sunday where a twelve hole stroke event was played. Cookie was the winner and apparently was impressive with a great shot on the eighth with his three wood. Stubba was in the action again this time losing a ball on the third and incurring a penalty but then when playing the sixth the said ball was found but unfortunately it was found a little too late. Stubba and Blue declared that on the eleventh they were going to hit over the dam, but with all good plans they didn’t succeed and went around the dam instead. Apparently our coaching guru Bro had plenty of advice for all the players and declared Matt Philpott had a very ordinary short game. Six members from Royal Molong travelled to Dunedoo on the weekend to play in the NSW Sand Green Four Ball Tournament. Because of the number of entries the Coolah golf course was also utilised. Both courses were challenging with the Dunedoo course having a lot of Kikuyu grass which was very moist and soft so that when your ball landed it didn’t run much further. The sand greens

Gerard were very slow so you needed a good firm putt to get the ball to the hole. Dunedoo Sports Club have a great setup there and all the players were well catered for. Congratulations to them for a great tournament. Coolah course was like playing on the side of Mount Canobolas. It was a very hilly course with soft Kikuyu grass and for those who didn’t have a golf cart it took it’s toll in having to push golf buggies up a lot of hills on the soft plush grass. Al ended up with a couple of blisters on the bottom of his feet. However, it was a good experience playing these courses despite being trying. Out of ninety seven pairs registered for the event Ged and Paul came in thirty third place with a net score of seventy two points, Scott and Justin in forty first place with a net score of seventy points and Al and Gerard forty fifth place with a net score of sixty nine points. The net score first three places all went to Dunedoo golfers with scores of ninety one, eighty four and eighty three. The Central West veterans have a tournament at Royal Molong this Monday, the 14th and golf as usual on Sunday, 8.30am for 9am. Everyone is welcome to come and join us.
