Why some towns thrive and others languish

Well, come and find out. Cabonne Council is conducting Community BBQ & Consultations in each Cabonne town & village throughout February and March 2022. Council's invitation says this is an opportunity for the community to enjoy a BBQ, understand the communities issues and priorities, and share Council's plans and projects for 2022 and beyond. It will also be an opportunity for the community to provide feedback on the Cabonne Community Strategic Plan. This plan will set the direction for Cabonne by helping to determine what is most important to our community." As Mayor Kevin Beatty said in the Plan released in 2020 "One of the most important roles of any council is to work with its community to develop a vision for the lifestyle, amenity and services the community wants in the future and to put in place a plan to achieve that vision.". Sounds big stuff - but nothing gets done in a hurry. Have your say. MOLONG Tuesday. 15 February, 6·8pm Council Chambers. Every town needs a footy team

And Molong has two. After a year "from hell", both the Molong Bulls Rugby League and the Magpies Rugby Union sides are planning for the year ahead after a constricted season, all but destroyed by Covid-19. The Molong Bulls held their Annual General Meeting on Monday. As ever, they are positive about the season ahead - especially after the heartbreaking late cancellation of the great Manildra Rhinos - Molong clash. A home game which would have attracted lots of fans - as it does in both towns. The season also saw the cancellation of three home games. Jenny Barrow was re-elected President of the Molong Bulls. What can we say. While Jenny lost husband Dave - a former respected Bulls coach and player and great supporter of Jenny

Town Talk

Molong’s Jude Taylor and the team have been doing a wonderful job organising Molong’s contribution to Orange360’s -‘2022 Banjo Paterson Australian Poetry Festival’. This very entertaining national festival has grown steadily and now attracts local and visiting bush poets and audiences- as well as those who can tell a good yarn, sing, recite, rap, write (beginners/amateurs/ professional - juniors to seniors). Good on Molong and Yeoval who have made sure the program includes Cabonne Country events (one of Banjo’s homes and favourite places). This Saturday night 12 Feb. 6 pm - 10 pm will see a fun loving crowd of locals and visitors heading to the Freemasons Hotel in Bank Street to enjoy the Molong Poetry Brawl and some 16 performers (with 2 junior entries). All amateurs and/or first time (some more polished!) bush poets, yarners, singers, rappers, reciters, lyricers, limmerickers) will be competing for fame, fun, and prize money ($100 first prize under 18; $150 1st prize open, $150 people’s choice).

Molong Poetry Brawl team Paula Rudd, Mark Oates, Jude Taylor and Bill Hopper will be part of the crowd, performers and ‘welcoming committee’ at the Freemasons on Saturday night for what will be a night of comedy, bush poetry, competitions, story (BIG ones) telling, talent, no talent, fun and laughter.

Will Janine Marriott (Molong) return to defend her 2021 title? Will Ged. Fulwood (Molong) return to take out the People’s Choice award in 2022? What about the two gorgeous (and talented) Whittle juniors - will they be back? Will former local ‘kid’ Adrian Pryde (formerly of Freemasons, Ironbark Inn, MCS student) return with another of his own written bush poetry? Head to the Freemasons and enjoy a delicious meal before or during what will be one of the funniest, most comical, true blu Molong bushies night. Note: Each competitor’s presentation must include the words ‘take me alive’ and ‘Bank Street’. Like to perform? Like to be part of the audience .. go to Trybooking.com... An invitation from Sharon and Alf Cantrell to visit their Banjo Paterson museum Welcome to the Banjo Paterson… more than a Poet Exhibition. An exciting presentation dedicated to the life and times of Australia's favourite poet, Andrew Barton "Banjo" Paterson, the exhibition is located at 43 Forbes Street in Yeoval NSW. This is the only exhibition in Australia dedicated to the life and times of Banjo who was born on 17 February 1864 near Orange. Banjo went on to grow up on a property near Yeoval, 'Buckinbah Station', where he gathered many of the early memories of bush life that he would go on to immortalise in verse. Playgroup

Molong District Baptist Church Playgroup is back for 2022! We meet each Wednesday morning 10.00-11.30 am, during school term time, at our church-building playground area. Mums, dads and grandparents with children 0-5 years are more than welcome to join us. Children spend their time playing, eating morning tea, playing, listening to a bible story, doing craft, playing and, well, more playing! Adults relax over a cuppa (sometimes there’s cake) and enjoy grown-up conversation. Our playgroup is a safe place (COVID-safe, too) for kids and adults alike; a place to connect with others, ask questions, and give and receive support to help in the busy time of raising little ones. Children need to bring their own morning tea, drink and a hat, and a gold coin donation is appreciated. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mim Evans ph 0428 147 145 or Megan Peffer ph 0434 674 214. We look forward to seeing you!

Morrison a ‘psycho’ – now who would have said that? A flurry of categorical denials by senior ministers has followed the report that a current Liberal cabinet minister described Scott Morrison as a “psycho” in a text exchange with then NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian during the summer bushfires of 2019-20. Two prominent NSW Liberal moderates, Marise Payne and Paul Fletcher (through a spokesman) were among those who said on Wednesday they weren’t the minister. Others included Sussan Ley, Simon Birmingham, Anne Ruston, Linda Reynolds, and Greg Hunt. Payne said in her statement she had never had such an exchange with Berejiklian, “nor have I ever used such language”, She also rejected the descriptions of the PM “in the purported messages”. She wasn’t the only one raising a question about the authenticity of the messages. Meanwhile Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce – quick to point out the culprit wasn’t from the Nationals – inadvertently injected confusion when his comments were wrongly reported as suggesting the minister was a woman. He quickly had to clarify he wasn’t saying that at all. Joyce said he didn’t know the identity of the minister but they should out themselves and give an explanation before they were named. It was just a “good rump steak with horseradish sauce, vegetables and chips, two bottles of red wine” away from some journalist saying “blah, blah, blah”. The great guessing game followed Ten’s Peter van Onselen asking Morrison at the National Press Club on Tuesday about the exchange. Van Onselen quoted the text comments in his Press Club question and on the Ten news. He said Berejiklian’s comments included describing Morrison as “a horrible, horrible person” who was “just obsessed with petty political point scoring” when lives were at stake. According to van Onselen, the other person condemned Morrison as a “complete psycho”, “desperate and jealous”, and said: “The mob have worked him out and think he’s a fraud”.

At the Press Club, a startled Morrison replied: “I don’t know who you’re referring to or the basis of what you’ve put to me, but I obviously don’t agree with it, and I don’t think that’s my record.” Berejiklian immediately issued a statement that she had “no recollection of such messages”, thus falling short of a denial. She reiterated her “very strong support” for Morrison, even though the two are known to have had differences.

NSW treasurer Matt Kean quickly found himself in the frame, as speculation about the leaker gathered momentum. Kean has just had a row with the federal government over Morrison’s refusal to provide money for the state government’s small business package. He is also close to Berejiklian, and it has been assumed she would only be so frank with someone she trusted. But Kean, who said he had checked his records, denied being the source. And van Onselen made it clear the minister involved was a federal Liberal (and a current minister, so his friend, former minister Christian Porter, wouldn’t be fingered). Hunt challenged van Onselen to name his source. The van Onselen question, together with the PM’s failure to know the price of bread and milk in response to another question, had turned Tuesday’s appearance into something of a train wreck for Morrison. The mystery of the minister ensured the story dragged on to distract another day. Morrison tried to play the whole thing down, saying on Wednesday, “I’m not fussed”, though that wasn’t credible. Asked whether he was confident the minister involved wasn’t sitting in his cabinet right now, he said “yes”. No one had come forward to confess. Morrison might not know who his alleged forthright cabinet critic is but by Wednesday he was able to prattle on about all sorts of breads and milks. As for him, “I’m just normal white bread, white bread toast. That’s me.” (theconversation.com.au)

Call to restore Cumnock’s railway station

Remembering

Maureen Kirkwood.

Last December Molong & District lost one of its loved and respected citizens. Here, Warren Edward Tanner (Ted) brother, Christine Gallagher sister, Peter Kirkwood son, Andrew Kirkwood son, Kathy Brown daughter, Philip Kirkwood son write about Maureen.

Maureen was born on 29th September 1933 at Penrith and passed away aged 88 at Gosling Creek Nursing Home in Orange on 28th December 2021. Maureen attended Penrith High where she was both a good athlete and academic student. Maureen loved to sing and would often sing hymns and duets with her sister Christine. Maureen loved classical music and was brought up in a musical household and taught the piano by her mother Bridie who was a professional pianist. One of Maureen’s favourite composers was Beethoven and she spent many hours practising the piano with her brother Ted. Maureen in 1961 married David Kirkwood and although they initially lived and raised their family in Blue Mountains, Maureen and David moved to Molong in 1992 to live at ‘Hacienda’ following the death of her father Warren Tanner. Phillip Buckley has rallied to the cause with a Facebook page devoted Maureen loved the farm and soon got involved to the endearing disused Cumnock Railway Station. in managing the cattle. The Cumnock railway station is located 389.070 km from Sydney and was opened on 19/01/1925. The station on located on an island platform and the design used was an Ac8 concrete layout. The station is made from concrete panels which are 18 panels long and the roofing is fibro tiles. The nearby Cumnock wheat silos were built in 1928. Extra bins were added in 1934 and the bulkhead was added in 1967. Use The entire line opened with the expectations of high traffic loads for passengers and freight but sadly it never operated to its designed capacity. Cumnock station passenger services needs were mainly served by CPH railmotors. These operated on the line between 1932 and 1974, with the occasional diversion of other mainline trains - locomotive hauled - over the line. The rail motor was withdrawn in September 1974 along with many other branch services during a nationwide fuel crisis. Closure Passenger rail services had been withdrawn in 1974 by the PTC. By the mid 1980s the traffic on the line was only freight and by 1986 it had almost reached its end of the operational rail corridor. The local farming output meant the Cumnock region and all the stations and yards along the line saw large local grain haulage. By the late 1980s several factors began to affect the line's operations including the 1980s general freight downturn, the opening of the Ulan branch line, and a transfer by the State Rail Authority of local grain haulage to road transport saw the line's demise accelerate faster than had been expected. The Molong to Dubbo branch line as a result of the changes was truncated north of Yeoval in 1987 with the remainder of the line to the south, officially closed in 1993. The Molong to Dubbo line has not seen any train movements since 1993. Present status The old railway station building is in derelict condition with smashed windows and has been fenced off. The signal box has been removed. The island platform is overgrown and one wooden station name board sign is broken and is understood to possibly be still lying flat on the platform. The tracks on the east side of the station have been lifted but the goods loading bank track remains in place. The crossing loop is gone, but the grain silo siding remains. In 2012, Alkane Resources expressed an interest in upgrading and opening the line for transporting goods and ore to and from its Rare Earth Mine, 30 km south of Dubbo, at Toongi. The cost of upgrading this section of line was estimated at A$30 million. In April 2013, Alkane announced that its studies into the reactivation of this part of the line were 'well advanced'. A late 2013 environmental impact statement from Alkane suggested that road would be the preferred option initially because of a lack of guaranteed material supply via rail from Newcastle, but that the issue might be revisited again before 2018. Sadly nothing has come of this planned reopening of the line since this time.

Molong is a changing town - with new residents keen to call Molong ‘home’ and wanting to be included, valued, heard - appreciated for what they would love to offer - contribute - and be welcomed for. Let’s welcome the artists, artisans, those who make, colour, and have ‘gifts’ that are needed for the change that Molong is ‘slowly’ moving towards. Perhaps with some reservations - but noticeably for the majority of residents - balanced with a sense of curiousity and an interest to learn. The new Express column is about learning, experiencing, adding to knowledge ... and giving, in some cases, a bit of a nudge to past thinking. Let’s explore ... together ....

Kids art? Naive art? No! Famous art by artists who came together in 1905 known as ‘The Fauves’. The painting style and colour (above) of the River Seine at Chatou (France) by Maurice de Vlaminck (1906) was a welcome change at the time for both artists, art appreciators, galleries, and buyers. Like a breath of fresh air - the era of ‘the Fauves’ was led by Henri Matisse who had arrived at the style after experimenting with the various PostImpressionist approaches of Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, and Georges Seurat. Paint what you see ... what you feel ... look at the scene you are painting ...As the artist of this work said at the time “I try to paint with my heart and my guts without worrying about style”.

Where did colour, abstracts, brush strokes and the ability to ‘see’ come from

The former bank building in Bank Street stood for many years as a half painted feature - that aroused many a conversation by residents and visitors of ‘the art of colour’. Over many years ... conversations, arguments, debates were aroused 1906 from the pub opposite - and up The River Seine at Chatou and down the street, across town, Artist: Maurice de Vlaminck Cabonne villages, and across NSW and Australia. “Ridiculous, crazy, This scene depicts the portion of the Seine that runs through Chatou, the Paris suburb where why is it (the building) only half Fauve artists, de Vlaminck and Derain shared a studio beginning in 1901. painted? And, then the conservative To create this painting, the artist, Maurice de Vlaminck used impasto (a technique practiced by view ... why not fix the timbers first, many Fauves): thick daubs of paint applied directly from the tube, then brushed together in short strokes to create the effect of movement. For the water and sky, de Vlaminck used a range of blues and greens, as well as dazzling white highlights applied in choppy dabs; the two red-and-orange trees at the left provide a lively contrast. The finished effect is one of brightness and vibrating motion; detail and traditional perspective matter far less than a sense of buoyant pleasure. As de Vlaminck said, "I try to paint with my heart and my guts without worrying about style." Oil on canvas - The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

clean the walls ... take down the cobwebs etc. etc. “Conform” was the clear message of onlookers. Personally, I liked the colours and how the building owner claimed her own individuality and selfexpression using colour. Why not? It’s her building. One can only Imagine what that building could have been - looked like - and imagined - had the Fauve movement of 1905 (and later) had their say! Next Week: The Fauves (If you seek conservatism - take a photo).

Easy to plant Easy to care for, and ... Very Pretty

Geraniums A weekly column by Rozzi and contributors

I love my red geraniums - then again, pink, lighter shades of red? I think I love them all! Rozzi

… Written in the stars

Astrology by Alise

February is here, and with it, opportunities for infinite potential. February marks the end of the Mercury and Venus retrogrades, and the beginning of a three-month period in which all planets will be direct. This means there are no planetary obstacles to achieving our goals! Aries (March 21st-April 19th)- You may feel more introspective this month, Aries, as ¬-this February will be preparing you for new beginnings. Allow yourself the time to research projects or new employment potential before diving in the deep end. Taurus- (April 20th-May 20th)- You will be able to apply all your new found wisdom, this month, Taurus. This will lead you in the right direction, and allow you to reach a higher level of self-assurance.

These plants are not only reliable ... but strong and hardy. With some 300+ varieties available in Australia and easy to grow from a cutting ... I tend to plant mine at the Gatekeeper’s Cottage in pots. Mainly because the severist of winter frosts down by the creek (and across town) can wipe these out in unsheltered gardens. Whilst they tend to come back and have another go at ‘living’ - my choice remains with pots that can be moved onto verandahs, sunrooms, shade houses, where plants can stay beautiful. The team at Bunnings tell me that ... “With more than 300 varieties in Australia, there's a geranium to suit any garden with a great range of colours, shapes and styles. Most geraniums are low spreading plants, with hairy, hand-shaped leaves. In spring, they bloom into colours ranging from red, white, pink, salmon to dark purple and even black.” Question? How do I grow geraniums and how much sun do they need? “Geraniums need at least six hours of sun each day, but also like being shaded from temperatures over 30 degrees. The best spot for them is in a well-drained garden bed. They also grow well in pots or in hanging baskets. Choose a potting mix, with equal amounts of soil, peat moss and perlite and they will thrive.” When and how to prune and trim? “Pruning geraniums will help to promote new growth and allow them to thicken up. Cut them back by a third in March or April for an impressive spring bloom.” How often should I water geraniums? “It can be hard to tell if geraniums need water as their leaves won't wilt like other plants. Geraniums like moist soil but it's also important to let the soil dry out between watering. When watering geraniums, you should avoid getting their foliage wet. This can lead to pests or diseases such as fungal spores. Consider installing a drip irrigation system or make sure that you water the plant's base. Overwatering can also lead to root rot in geraniums. The foliage will turn yellow, wilt and die. Cut away affected roots and add a soil heavy in perlite and peat moss to improve the drainage.” Fertiliser for geraniums? “Healthy geraniums need regular fertilising. The best fertilisers are either a controlled-release fertiliser when planting or a water-soluble fertiliser every third time you water for a healthy plant.” Caring for geraniums: diseases and pests? “Geraniums are prone to a variety of diseases and pests that can harm their growth. Rust is a fungal disease that causes yellow, raised, powdery spots on the leaves. Spray affected leaves with fungicide for a quick and easy solution.” “Budworms can tunnel into unopened buds and eat them from the inside. If your flowers are riddled with small holes, remove any affected buds before the whole plant is infected.” How do I propagate geraniums? “Geraniums are easy to propagate and grow from cuttings. Make your cuttings about 12cm long and remove any of the leaves from the bottom. A good tip is to let the cutting dry out for 12–24 hours, which will help to prevent root rot. Then dip the bottom of the cutting in a rooting hormone and place it in a pot full of potting mix and give it a good water. You can also help it out by putting a plastic bag over the plant and pot, which will act like a greenhouse and keep the humidity in.” Thank you to the Bunning’s Gardening Team for their professional advice

Gemini- (May 21st-June 20th)- February will be a time for you to become more organised, and to clean up any physical or mental messes in your life. Once you begin this process, you will be able to feel more contented and at peace. Cancer- (June 21st-July 22nd)- You will be able to find resolutions to many of your problems, this month, Cancer. This is a month of transformations and changes in many of your close, and more intimate relationships. Leo- (July 23rd-August 22nd)- You may feel more emotional or sensitive this month, Leo. Use this month as a time to release any negative energies you may be holding onto. This will allow for a feeling of renewal later in the month. Virgo- (August 23rd-September 22nd)You will feel major transitions within your relationships with others, and yourself this month, Virgo. These transitions will allow you to find clarity surrounding your creativity and your desires. Libra- (September 23rd-October 22nd)Your manifestations and hard work will pay off this month, Libra. This will allow to find resolutions within your family dynamic, and therefore, resolutions within your own emotional well-being. Scorpio- (October 23rd-November 21st)Take time this month to seek clarity surrounding your emotional well-being. Communicate carefully, in order to retain strong emotional connections and relationships. Sagittarius- (November 22nd-December 21st)- You will find clarity surrounding the things that really matter to you, this month, Sagittarius. This will allow you to prioritise your time, energy and finances, in a way that is most beneficial to you. Capricorn- (December 22nd-January 19th)There will be a conclusion to a negative cycle you have been experiencing this month, Capricorn. This conclusion will allow you to experience a kind of rebirth and seek out new beginnings. Aquarius- (January 20th-February 18th)It’s your birthday month, Aquarius! This month is a perfect time to celebrate yourself and all your achievements, as you find more time to connect with yourself. Pisces- (February 19th-March 20th)- The universe will provide you with many new opportunities this month, Pisces. Immerse yourself in these opportunities wholeheartedly, just ensure you try not to become too stressed or overwhelmed in the process. MOLONG EXPRESS, Thursday 10 February 2022 9

A husband and wife who work for the circus go to an adoption agency. The Social workers raise doubts about the living conditions in a circus, but the couple produce photos of their 50-foot luxury motor home, which is clean and well-maintained and equipped with a beautiful nursery. The Social workers also raise concerns about the education a child would receive while in the couple's care. "We've arranged for a full-time tutor who will teach the child all the usual subjects along with French, Mandarin and computer skills". Then the social workers express concern about a child being raised in a circus environment. "Our nanny is a certified expert in Paediatric care, Welfare and Diet". The social workers are finally satisfied and ask "What age child are you hoping to adopt?" They said “It doesn't really matter as long as they can fit in the cannon". A woman, cranky because her husband was late coming home again, decided to leave a note, saying, "I've had enough and have left you...don't bother coming after me" Then she hid under the bed to see his reaction. After a short while the husband comes home and she could hear him in the kitchen before he comes into the bedroom. She could see him walk towards the dresser and pick up the note... After

a few minutes he wrote something on it before picking up the phone and calling someone... "She's finally gone...yeah I know, about bloody time, I'm coming to see you, put on that sexy French nightie. I love you...can't wait to see you...we'll do all the naughty things you like." He hung up, grabbed his keys and left. She heard the car drive off as she came out from under the bed. Seething with rage and with tears in her eyes she grabbed the note to see what he wrote..."I can see your feet. We're outta bread: be back in five minutes." Two Irishmen walk into a pet shop in Dingle, they walk over to the bird section and Gerry says to Paddy, 'Dat's dem.' The owner comes over and asks if he can help them. 'Yeah, we'll take four of dem dere little budgies in dat cage up dere,' says Gerry.. The owner puts the budgies in a cardboard box. Paddy and Gerry pay for the birds, leave the shop and get into Gerry's truck to drive to the top of the Connor Pass.. At the Connor Pass, Gerry looks down at the 1000 foot drop and says, 'Dis looks like a grand place..' He takes two birds out of the box, puts one on each shoulder and jumps off the cliff. Paddy watches as the budgies fly off and Gerry falls all the way to the bottom, killing himself stone dead. Looking down at the remains of his best pal, Paddy shakes his head and says, 'Bugger dat. Dis budgie jumping is too feck'n dangerous for me."

Damien Hayes the pick of the Country bowlers with 3 for 30 and Sean Clayton 1 for 42. In reply Country chased down the target in the 36th over. Veteran Joe Clayton the star scoring 59 supported by Nigel Brazier 47 and the ever consistent Andrew Heath with 39. Pat Tree 2 for 22 as usual Millthorpe’s best. Good win to Country who consolidate 4th position with only three rounds remaining. Millthorpe would be dissapointed after posting a solid total but now probably need to win all remaining matches and hope other results go their way to make the finals.

Millthorpe V Country Millthorpe hosted Country in the battle for 4th spot with the finals looming. The hosts batted first. Opener Dave Crombie continued his good form the previous week scoring 26 getting Millthorpe off to a solid start. Millthorpe lost a couple of wickets to be 3 for 30. However a solid partnership of 104 between Captain Will Oldham and Pete Heller established a good total for Millthorpe to defend 5 for 173 at the conclusion of their innings. A much more pleasant morning greeted the seventeen players who fronted for golf at Royal Molong on Sunday. It was decided to play a twelve hole two person ambrose event because there sixteen players when we teed off but then Matt Earle came in late and joined Evo and the Ghost Walker to make one team of three. Matt was asked why he was so late for golf. “Well being a Sunday “ he replied “ I had to toss a coin to see if I’d go to church or play golf “. “ Okay but why so late?”. “ Well I had to toss it fifteen times”. Evo is playing some good golf and carried the team for quite a few holes. At one stage Bro, who was playing in the same group along with Justin decided to put his coaching hat on and give Evo advice on where he should stand when hitting the ball. Evo, taking Bro’s advice almost lost his golf ball. Good one Bro. The winners on the day were Ged and Wrighty with Matt Philpott and Weeksey the runners up. Thanks to Cookie for cooking sausages, bacon and eggs for the bbq and washing up. Bro also picked up a hitchhiker in his golf cart whilst playing golf

Gerard and after a few holes of watching the Ghost Walker’s game the hitchhiker then proceeded to make uncomplimentary remarks about his game. Thanks Erin. The Molong golf club is a small club and is always interested in encouraging more people to come and have a game of golf with us. Whether male or female, young or old, anyone and everyone is welcome. We have a wonderful facility which is maintained by our even more wonderful volunteers. If you think you would like to try this deceptively simple but endlessly complicated game that satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect at the same time then come and join us on a Sunday morning. There are plenty of people to help you. President Ged can show you how to stand on the incorrect side of the ball and still hit it a mile. Justin can show you how to hit a chip shot with your driver. Al can show you how to play good golf every fourth hole. Darren can show you how to hit golf balls into the dam but not up the fairway. The list goes on. And then of course there is Bro our golf coaching guru. So come and join us on Sunday, 8.30am for 9am. There’s plenty of laughs and a bbq to follow after golf.

Molong Juniors shine at Australian Disc Golf Awards night The continuing success of Molong as a hot spot in the rapidly growing sport of Disc Golf has been highlighted once again with the spotlight firmly on our local juniors at the recent National Awards Night. With many thousands of players now competing in Disc Golf around the country the attainment of a single National Award for any club is a big achievement, but three of our local kids took out some of the top honours. Twelve-year old Jaiden Gallard fought off a very strong field of Junior Males to take out second place on the 2021 Disc Golf National Tour, an even more impressive achievement when you realise that the only player to beat him was three years his senior and moves into the adult ranks next year. We look forward to Jaiden cleaning up in 2022 as his power and touch continue to improve in this technically challenging sport. Jaiden is a strong young left-handed thrower who has a very big future. Another of our Central West Disc Golf juniors, twelveyear old Lily Nicholson-Love put in some strong showings, finishing with a first and a second place in national events to pick up second place in the Junior Female division of the National Tour, again only beaten by a player who had competed in many more events throughout the year. With Lily’s ability to launch discs

forehand or backhand, left or right-handed she will be hard to beat in upcoming years. Molong local Lydia Philpott, also twelve, was unlucky to sustain an ankle injury last year which saw her miss some key events, but she took out first place nationally at the Aussie Disc Golf Day in late November of 2021. This event was played concurrently right around the country with the very best players from all states competing. Lydia didn’t just win this event, but absolutely smashed her competition with rounds which would have placed her highly in the Women’s Divisions. Lydia is already out-driving many adult players and is destined for big things in Disc Golf. One of the challenges of our local players competing on the national tour has been a COVID-created lack of local championship level events over the past year, which makes it very hard to accumulate the necessary tour points to fight for places. This will, however, change in 2022 with the introduction of The Western Disc Golf Tour which will see six Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) events being run between the courses in Molong and Dubbo, with this culminating in the hosting of the NSW State Championships at the Molong course in October.

Local pro player Kevin Costa reported that “this will allow many of our outstanding players to shine in their divisions. We expect many more awards at next year’s National Tour, particularly amongst our outstanding juniors.” Huge amounts of media coverage and international professional players now signing for endorsement contracts of up to $10 million has seen the sport of Disc Golf move rapidly from the fringe into the mainstream. “With the strength in our junior divisions it would be great to see one of our youngsters come through and make a real name for themselves in the sport “, Costa said. For anyone interested in getting involved in this great sport check out Central West Disc Golf on Facebook for details of social doubles and League Days, as well as details of upcoming tournaments.
