Making The Cut By Allison Wilson Lee

Do you want a fresh start? Are you ready for a change? Even a makeover? Maybe a new hair cut is the way to go?! If you’re ready for a new style, consider cutting your hair and donating the leftovers to Pink Heart Funds.

Pink Heart Funds provides wigs made from natural hair for both children and adults and asks for donations of hair to help produce these wigs.

Pink Heart Funds—which is 100% volunteer based—is an organization founded by a hairstylist who battled cancer herself. She wanted to serve others who lose their hair due to medical issues such as chemotherapy, burns, or hair loss disorders.

Imagine how a new hairpiece can boost the self-esteem of an individual struggling with hair loss! In order to create the wigs, Pink Heart Funds requests ponytails composed of clean, dry hair bound with two ponytail holders (one at the top, one in the middle) and placed in a zip-top bag.

Ponytails used for wigs need to be at least ten inches long. However, you may donate shorter ponytails—these bunches of hair might be used to make bangs. Hair from any ethnicity (and of any color) is accepted. Even if your hair has been permed or colored, you’re still free to send it to Pink Heart Funds, so long as it is not over-processed. Layered hair is acceptable, too, provided the shortest layer is at least 12 inches long. Once you have cut your hair and have it secured in a ponytail (or more than one ponytail, depending on how much hair you donate), put it into an envelope and mail it to the organization’s office at the following address:

Pink Heart Funds, P.O. Box 1047, Long Beach, MS 39560 U.S.A. Pink Heart Funds supports boys and girls, men and women, who deal with the hair loss that often goes along with cancer and other diseases. By making a change in your own life with a new hair cut, you can help make a change in the lives of others—to join with Pink Heart Funds in its mission to “inspire, encourage, and restore hope for persons affected by cancer and hair loss disorders.” You can find out more about Pink Heart Funds on their website pinkheartfunds.org If you are blessed with long locks, consider sharing that blessing with others. Giving of yourself comes with great rewards— knowing that you are helping a person who wants to look his or her best, just like you. You don’t need money or possessions to give a lift to another person; you just need to have a heart to share yourself with others. You can do just that by sharing your hair!

Introducing

ALEX’S KITCHEN

When it comes to food 18 year old Alexandria Brooks knows her stuff and Miss Moxie is proud to introduce as our resident foodie extraordinary. Get to know her a little better below. “Hello foodies! I’m Alexandria Brooks. I love to cook and I’ve been cooking since I was eight. For me there’s something so therapeutic about cooking and being able to enjoy my labor of love. Cooking is a way for me to artistically express myself in a very palatable way. Throughout my ten years of cooking I’ve had countless amounts of food disasters, cooking accidents, and mistakes. However, I’ve been fortunate enough to do so many great things such as be on the Food Network Show “Chopped”, have a summer internship at a New York City restaurant at 16 years old, start a food blog, and much more. My goal is not only to teach people how to cook but show them how easy it can be and how much fun you can have while doing it,”

5 Ways to Upgrade Avocado Toast Avocado toast is the new “Breakfast of Champions” across Instagram and rightfully so because it’s quick to prepare, healthy, and delicious. Foodies have gotten more creative in their avocado toast toppings

by using ingredients such as smoked salmon, radishes, sesame seeds, and the list goes on. Avocado toast is a blank canvas for your foodie imagination to take over. missmoxiemag.com

THE AVOCADO BASE

Ingredients: -1 ripe Hass avocado, cubed -drizzle of extra virgin olive oil -squeeze of fresh lemon juice -pinch of salt and pepper -a slice or two of bread, toasted (any kind, I prefer whole wheat)

This is the simplest recipe ever and the base of your avocado toast. I like to lightly mash the avocados rather than slice them because it gives the avocado toast a creamier texture. After preparing this avocado base the fun part comes along when choosing what additional ingredients you’d like to put on top. You can also eat it just like this, which is perfectly fine.

Preparation: Mix all of the ingredients together until the avocadoes are lightly mashed but there are still chunks. Spread the mixture on top of your piece(s) of toast and enjoy!

THE TOPPINGS 1. Chia Seeds These tiny seeds pack a lot of nutritional value and add a nice crunch to anything you put in it. Sprinkle a small handful of chia seeds on to your avocado toast for crunch and a pop of color.

2. Egg (Poached) Eggs are an excellent source of protein and a good breakfast always includes them. Whether you fry, scramble, or boil them they are the perfect topping for avocado toast.

I love poached eggs on top of my avocado toast because the yolk is still runny so it gives the toast a little bit of richness. However you cook your eggs for your avocado, just remember to sprinkle some black pepper on top to finish it off.

3. Prosciutto Prosciutto is a thinly sliced Italian cured meat that adds a nice saltiness to avocado toast. It can be found at virtually every grocery store or deli. Also, bacon is a great substitute if you want to add a salty element to your avocado toast.

4. Tomato Tomatoes add color and vibrancy to any dish that it’s incorporated in, so why not add some to your avocado toast? Place one or two slices of tomato on top of your toast then finish it with a drizzle of olive oil and a kiss of salt and pepper. A green tomato matches well with the green of the avocado mixture. missmoxiemag.com

5. Everything Bagel

This is a perfect hybrid of avocado toast and an everything-bagel with cream cheese. First spread a layer of cream cheese onto the toast before adding the avocado mixture. Then sprinkle with an everything-bagel-seed-mix (can be found at specialty stores).

MADELINE STUART

Story by Grace Hatton Photography by CiCi Ziets

Madeline Stuart has a mission, to change the way society perceives beauty and specifically promote the celebration of people with disabilities.

modeling career a couple of years ago when she and her Mum, Roseanne Stuart, attended a fashion parade. Madeline pointed to the stage and declared “Mum, Me, Model.”

Madeline is completing this mission by launching an insanely successful modeling career at a young age and challenging the norms of the industry with every photo shoot. This 19-year-old from Brisbane, Australia was inspired to start her

Madeline dedicated herself to getting in shape to begin her career, a feat she is humble about saying that it was simply “eating only healthy food and exercising six days a week, no fad diets, just plain simple hard work.”

“My real goal is to end discrimination and to make everyone feel more comfortable with disability.”

A huge element of this healthy lifestyle has been Madeline’s love of movement. “Maddy’s one true love apart from the catwalk is dancing, it has taught her so much and helped her with her coordination and fitness,” says Madeline’s Mum, Roseanne. This love of dance has translated to the creation of a dance company called Inside Outside Dance Ensemble. Since its creation last February there are ten classes up and running with over 100 students. The classes are free for students with disabilities and only a minor fee for other students in order to create an inclusive environment. Madeline is loving every minute of the process.

“Madeline has met some amazing people and made a fantastic network of friends and she hopes other people will enjoy it as much as she does

and it gives them as many advantages in life as what she has gained,” says Roseanne. Inside Outside is a not for profit organization and Madeline encourages her followers to visit the gofundme page if they want to support the endeavor. When she’s not dancing Madeline is strutting her stuff on the runway and in her short modeling career she’s already broken down so many barriers.

“I think our world is becoming so much more accepting. Everyone likes to feel equal.”

Her many achievements include serving as an ambassador for the cosmetic line Glossigirl, having a handbag named and designed with her in mind by EverMaya (with every purchase of THE MADELINE 5% is donated to the National Down Syndrome Society), walking in the Russian Caspian Fashion Week, and perhaps most historically walking in New York Fashion Week multiple times. Again Madeline’s humbleness is on full display when she talks about walking at NYFW

“It was such an honor to model on that platform,” says Madeline “It is so wonderful to know I did such a great job I was asked to come back again.” Even with all of her success on the runway Madeline is committed to a vision beyond modeling. Madeline says that “the fashion industry is only a small part of what I am trying to achieve. My real goal is to end discrimination and to make everyone feel more comfortable with disability.”

It seems, that the world of fashion and society in general, is finally becoming more accepting of those who are a little different. Along with Madeline last year’s NYFW featured models with disabilities like the bionic model Rebekah Marine, actress and model Jamie Brewer (who also has Down Syndrome), and FTL created an entire show using only models with disabilities entitled FTL Moda Loving You. Madeline sees the simplicity behind this shift towards a more accepting fashion industry and perhaps even a more accepting world. “I think people like to see change,” says Madeline “I think our world is becoming so much more accepting. Everyone likes to feel equal.” Madeline’s sees acceptance as a defining mark of beauty “It is a person’s kindness, understanding, love and acceptance

that makes them beautiful,” says Madeline. Madeline is the embodiment of her own definition of beauty as she continues to spread inspiration and love everywhere she goes.

As her popularity grows Madeline has a message for her followers, especially the younger ones who aspire to be just like her, “Believe in yourself,” says Madeline “There are so many messages out there…

About physical beauty, but the only beauty that really matters is what comes from inside your heart.” As Madeline continues to grow her modeling career she has plans to start up a line of snazzy leggings as well as continuing to work the fashion circuit. Whatever success waits around the corner for Madeline, which I’m sure there will be plenty of, one thing is clear: she will continue to be a beacon of humility, love and beauty.

As she does this she will fulfill her desire to be known as someone that “is kind and makes the world a more positive place.”

SAVE THE WATER, SAVE THE PLANET

By Allison Wilson Lee

Of all the water on Earth, less than 1% is available for drinking, washing, cooking, and for all the other ways that people use water. We must all share this water— not just with our neighbors down the street but with

our neighbors around the globe. If we love our neighbors, we consider their needs, too, not just our own. And we all need water! Have you thought about how you can conserve water? Here are some simple things that you can do to use water wisely.

Take showers instead of baths. Showers use less water than filling up the tub. Even better, put a bucket in the shower. While you get clean, the bucket fills with water. You can use that water for watering your plants or even to flush toilets by simply pouring the water into the toilet bowl. For a bigger challenge, try to get your showers down to five minutes! Turn off the water while you brush your teeth. This is a simple step, one that you’ve probably heard already. But it will save gallons over time! Also turn off the tap while lathering up your hands with soap when washing them. That, too, saves the H2O. Run the dishwasher and washing machine only when you have a full load. This ensures you make good use of the water required to run these appliances. Also, check to see if your clothes are truly dirty before throwing them in the clothes hamper. Some items—such as sweaters, jeans, and skirts—don’t have to be washed each time they are worn.

Skip washing your car. Or, if you do wash your vehicle, use a sponge and a bucket of soapy water (with the hose turned off). Be sure that you turn off the hose when you aren’t rinsing the car, too. When you wash dishes by hand, don’t run the water when you rinse your dishes. Instead, (if you have a double-basin sink) fill one part of your sink with warm water and rinse your dishes that way. Do you have a little water left in that single-use water bottle? If you didn’t drink it all, don’t throw it out. You can give that water to your plants—and then be sure to recycle the plastic bottle, of course. Here’s another challenge: If you shave your legs (it’s OK if you don’t-not every woman does!), try turning off the water in your shower while you lather up and shave, then turn it back on when you need to rinse. It will save water (and may even help you cut down on your time in the shower).
