Summer

Make Up

By Nicole Wolt

Su

mmer is the perfect time for creating memories or

relaxing with friends. Unfortunately, summer weather is not perfect for wearing makeup.

Allow me to share an easy, natural summer look that lasts all day and can be built on for night-time.

beauty

.

Use mineral make-up to keep it cool. Not only does mineral makeup look natural, but it’s waterinfused so it’ll stick to your skin.

Almay Wake Up Mineral foundation is a great option, which you can find at drugstores or www.almay.com. Use this as your base and put it on like any other mineral foundation.

Next, use a powder blush because it’ll stick to your skin better. Stick with a bright pink because they flatter any skin tone and has shimmer in it making it perfect for night-time too. Now, using a big brush, swirl it over your cheeks. Make sure to use a light hand because with all that summer fun, you won’t need to much blush.

beauty One problem with eye make up is keeping it from melting off in the heat. Use Urban Decay’s Primer Potion, found at www.urbandecay.com. After the primer, put on a fun shade of eyeliner like purple or teal. These colors are flattering for most eyes. Check out Maybelline’s Eye Studio Lasting Drama. To make your look night-time ready, apply more eyeliner and smudge it a bit to create a lighter version of the smoky eye look.

It might seem strange, but clear mascara is perfect for summer because it won’t smudge in the heat or be ruined by water. It will still define your lashes, and that’s all that counts, right? Try MAX Factor Clear Mascara found at drugstores or www.maxfactor.com

beauty Keep it Colorful Finish off your look with natural looking lips. I like tinted lip balms because they color your lips, but also nourish them. Bright pink and fuchsia are some popular shades for summer. These are also really bright colors with some shimmer as well, so they’ll be great for parties. Try Lancome Juicy Tubes in Cherry Burst or Magic Spell. These can be found at www.lancome-usa.com or department stores.

Harsh summer heat can take a toll on luscious locks, resulting in frayed ends, dull color and lifeless texture. Trips to the beach and outdoor activities that call for ponytails and hats make matters worse. Quick fix drugstore products are loaded with preservatives, colorants and fragrances that put even more stress on troubled tresses. So what’s a girl to do to beat the summer hair slump?

beauty

Go Natural Give your coif a break from over-processing. Chemical dyes leave hair vulnerable to heat damage. Instead, try spritzing strands with lemon juice to bring out natural highlights. Or whip up an herbal tea and use as a rinse to boost your natural color. Chamomile tea brings out golden tones in blonde hair. Rooibos tea intensifies rich red hues. Black Tea warms and adds shine to brunette locks. Preserve your color and avoid buildup by pairing down products and choose natural, organic shampoo and conditioner for everyday care.

For a day at the beach, forget about blow-drying, straightening or curling. Summer calls for no-fuss styling. Salt water is actually the perfect hair texturizer. Just scrunch as your hair dries naturally for super cute waves. Stash a few bobby pins to tame bangs or unruly flyaway's. In a pinch, you can even fight frizz with a dab of natural SPF lotion. For effortless out-of-your-face beach style, tie hair back with a boho-chic bandana instead of a ponytail, which can cause breakage.

beauty Undo the Damage Treat your tresses to a natural deep conditioning that will mend split ends and leave hair glossy. Heat ½ cup of Jojoba Oil until warm. Massage into hair, wrap in a shower cap or towel and leave on for 20 minutes. For extra conditioning, zap with a blow dryer for two minutes, then shampoo. Repeat weekly for pampered, healthy hair throughout the season.

Beat Bikini By Kate Gilmartin

As he winter t

Don’t Panic!

months come to a close, and the scarves are traded for tank tops, one thought lingers on every girl’s mind. Bathing suit season is coming.

You are not alone! Everyone from a size 0 to infinity has the same insecurities about being close to naked at a pool party or hanging at the beach. The key to beating the summer bikini blues is a great bathing suit and a confident attitude.

fashion

The Most Important Rule Choose a suit that plays to your strengths

Are you a little big in the back with a smaller mid section? Go for boy cut bottoms, they’re great at covering, but also show your curves

Are you self-conscience because of a small chest? Fear not my friend, go and get a push, a push up bra top that is!

fashion

If you have a bit of a tummy and a large chest, pick out a halter tankini that will hold you in place and keep your tummy out of sight.

Wearing a plus size? Don’t worry, some of the most beautiful women in the world have been over a size 16, Marilyn Monroe included! Find a string-tied halter one-piece with a fun print. Even tiny celebrities like Paris Hilton have been seen rocking the one-piece, so be bold, it’s the style.

fashion

Above all, remember, it doesn’t matter if you are in a full coverage one piece or a string bikini, if you don’t show up with your head high and a confident spirit, you will never beat the blues. If you feel good, you look good, and people will notice.

The Summer of the Free Spirit By Nicole Gordon

This summer is all about ethereal style,

effortless pieces and a nod to the 1970s. One part bohemian princess, one part gypsy queen, this summer’s most desired look involves a bit of lace, a bit of denim and a lot of hat.

This look is classically, fashionably “summer” and achieving it will involve getting your

hands on

5 must-have pieces.

fashion The key to this piece is that the shorts need to rest on your hips, not be too tight and have just enough of a beat-up look to pass as vintage (unless you can get your hand on a vintage pair). The more frayed, the better. Remember, this look isn’t about “Daisy Dukes.” It’s about free-spirited, loose fitting, yet body complimenting, silhouettes. Lace Shirt: Forever 21; $17.80

#2 Lace

#1 Denim Shorts

Shorts: Forever 21; $16.80

We aren’t talking about demure, lady-in-waiting lace. Summer lace should be about romance. It should be about flow, breathability and adding a bit of softness to a pair of rough denim shorts.

Try shirts with lace detail on the back or a figure flattering, lace dress that stops above the knee.

fashion Nothing better encompasses the look #3 of a free-spirited girl than a skirt that blows Flowing in the wind. Perfect for beach days or bonfire Skirt nights, its whimsical and encompasses everything that is right about this summer’s Skirt: Lily Whiteromance with the ‘70s. Nordstrom; $44 Falling just at the ankle and paired with a crocheted or lace top, this look screams summertime chic. Crochet Vest: Forever 21:$19.99

#4 Crochet

While the word may drudge up ideas of your grandma’s hobby, this season’s crochet is anything but old.

Crocheted vests, skirts and shirts are making their way from the runway to your closet. The best part about this fabric is that it looks great while allowing for ventilation.

fashion A sunburned face is never a good look. A perfectly overlysized hat, on the other hand, hits the mark every time. The ultimate icing on the cake, this accessory completes a look like no other can.

Floppy Hat; Urban Outfitters;$29

#5 Big hats

Big, floppy hats are popping up everywhere, and while they are perfect for blocking the sun, they also add a bit of mystery and a wow factor to any summer ensemble. Pair a hat with your favorite swimsuit or use it as the final touch to your boho-chic look.

Stay True Under Peer Pressure By Erin Sweeney

The cliché saying “if they don’t like you for who you are, they’re not your true friends” is cliché because it is true. Nowadays, even starting in elementary schools, cliques are formed and peer pressure is in full swing once you hit middle school and high school. Peer pressure can come in many forms: teasing, spreading rumors, and even physical bullying.

“The best way to avoid giving into peer pressure is to avoid the unhealthy situations altogether

LAKEY PETERSON International Surfing Champion, Conservation Advocate and All Around Golden Girl By Grace Hatton

B

Y the age of 12, Lakey was crowned the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) Western States Champion for girls 14 and under.

Then in 2009, Lakey won the NSSA Woman’s 18 and under Open National Title by completing the first ever aerial maneuver in a woman’s surfing competition at any level. In 2010, Lakey defended her title, winning for the second consecutive year. Lakey was the top female pick for the 2011 USA Surf Team. Lakey opened up to Miss Moxie about her aspirations for her surfing career, her desire to save the planet, and how she overcomes challenges to be the best she can be.

Miss Moxie: You've had a crazy year – being featured in Nike's Leave a Message movie, winning first place at the Rob Machado Pro Jr. Championships and competing in the ASP Junior World Tournament. How are you handling it all?

Lakey Peterson: I’m just taking things one step at a time. Everything I do is kind of a building…

doing the best I can at whatever’s in front of me.

MM: You're only sixteen and still in school. You've already achieved so much, what is your secret to success?

MM: Surfing is obviously your passion, what made you want to start surfing in the first place?

LP: It’s not as hard as it seems, actually. I just have to focus on one thing at a time, as it happens, and trust in God to guide me through it all. It’s just a matter of concentrating on one thing at a time and

LP: I had been involved in a lot of sports since I was a little kid but it’s only been over the last few years that I’ve decided that surfing should be my focus. I tried it once when I was 11 and thought it was okay but when I picked up the board again a few years later something just clicked with me.

MM: Thanks to your surfing career, you've traveled all over the world, what's been your favorite place to visit so far? LP: Australia-the waves are huge and the people are incredibly nice!

MM: In such an stellar career, what do you consider your finest moment? LP: Probably winning the NSSA World Championship the first time. That was kind of the moment when I was like, “I’ve really made it.” MM: What has been your biggest struggle when it comes to achieving your dreams? LP: Probably just keeping everything consistent. It can be hard to balance everything going on with friends and school when you’re touring constantly MM: What advice would but I do it by trying to focus on just you give to any one thing at a time. aspiring professional surfers reading this interview? MM: Outside of the water, you give back by being a spokesperson for the Student Conservation Association (SCA), what exactly does the SCA do? LP: The SCA spreads awareness about environmental issues to kids and organizes cleanups and environment preservation projects around the country. It’s great because it gets kids to understand how precious the environment is from a really young age, and how they can be practical about making it better, too MM: Why are you so passionate about protecting the environment?

LP: When I was really little

there was a meadow I used to go to whenever I needed to be at peace, and I guess I just realized that places like that are so precious and we need to save as many of them as possible and make sure they thrive, because we can’t get them back if we lose them. And being a surfer requires that you be around nature all day so you get a feel for how precious and beautiful it all is.
