FASHION

Fashion with a Conscience By Amie Mariana Sider

A Broken World Do you ever feel like you hear about so many problems in the world these days that it’s absolutely impossible to tackle them all? Issues like poverty, health, education, equality, and so much more can seem overwhelming and many of us think that we can’t do anything to make it all better so we just get discouraged and end up doing nothing at all.

The truth is, there are small and simple ways for us to combat these issues and help bring lasting change. Make a Change With Your Clothes One important area to begin with is your wardrobe. Sound surprising? Jewelry and fashion can certainly be one of the most creative and expressive outlets for women of all ages, but unfortunately it can also be one of the most oppressive and exploitative at the same time.

FASHION We often don’t think of the people that make our jewelry and fashion. Many people don’t know that clothing workers in developing nations are often mistreated by their employers and are taken advantage of physically and even sexually, forcing them into poor and unsafe working conditions, unfair hours with little pay, and injury and death are frequent consequences.

During the spring of this year, a clothing factory in Bangladesh collapsed suddenly, killing and severely injuring thousands of innocent workers who made a living making cheap clothing for popular North American brands. The events were tragic enough to make headline news, but there are so many other incidents like this go unreported all around the world everyday. If that doesn’t sit well with you…there is hope.

Unfortunately this is the price we end up paying in order to have fast and cheap clothing.

In order to change the system we have to understand that we hold power as consumers, and we can show the world that there is a better way to make fashion and treat the people who make our fashion.

FASHION Change Your Wardrobe and Change the World Want to change the world? Then start by changing your wardrobe. That’s what I decided to do during my university career studying sociology & global studies. I was horrified when I learned of all the cruelty and brutality that went on in third world clothing factories. Since I had such a passion for fashion and helping others I decided to

create a fashion & accessories company called NationWares that would help get people out of systems of poverty and inequality for good! NationWares has helped thousands of people escape

poverty by giving them meaningful and safe jobs making handmade jewelry & accessories that provide them with fair income. With products ranging from backpacks, purses, shoes, to necklaces, bracelets and more, NationWares reaches out to the world’s most vulnerable people. I love sharing NationWares products with the world and hopes that people of all ages will do their part in ending poverty while bringing positive change to the fashion industry. 9

FASHION I wanted NationWares to share the story of the person who made the product. That’s why all NationWares products come with a unique story of the artist behind the product in order for customers to truly see how this job has transformed their life, and even community! NationWares purchases instantly make positive change by providing an individual in need with proper education, training, and employment where they are treated fairly and equally. You Have the Power to Make a Difference!

In order to keep myself accountable to helping people, I tell myself and other young girls to shop at thrift stores as much as possible, and I remind myself and others to always do research on popular brands making sure they treat workers ethically and pay fairly. Feel free to even write letters to your favorite companies asking them to treat workers fairly. After all, your voice matters and your fashion choices can change the world. Follow fair and ethical brands like NationWares and join them in making your purchases 10 powerful.

LIVE YOUR LIFE

POWER SNACKS FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR By Alexandria Brooks  It’s that time of the year again; school is here! And although this isn’t exciting news for any teenager, you’re going to need your energy to keep up with homework, studying, afterschool clubs/activities, and of course your social life.

fall ‘13 missmoxieonline.com

But instead of caffeinated Starbucks coffee and sugary donuts from Dunkin’ donuts I’m going to give you a few ideas on the perfect foods to snack on as an afterschool treat or something to fuel your brain during the long study hours. Get Your Snack On The best way to keep your energy up throughout the day is by snacking on healthy, but delicious foods.

11

LIVE YOUR LIFE Fresh berries like strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries give you the necessary vitamins to keep you energized during the day, and honestly they’re delicious in a smoothie, in plain yogurt or in cereal. Another delicious treat that’s great to snack on are pita chips, which are the latest craze these days. Pita chips are wonderful as a light snack or lunch with hummus and they’re much healthier than potato chips and are convenient to carry in a Ziploc bag.

Things like dried apricots, cranberries, almonds, walnuts, etc. can all go into your own personalized trail mix. And here’s a recipe that might get you inspired on what you might want to put in your trail mix. Be creative with food you eat because it’s meant to nourish your body and make you feel wonderful! Your Own Trail Mix Recipe

1 handful of any dried fruit (dried cranberries, raisins, etc.)

1 handful of any nuts (walnuts, almonds, etc.)

1 handful of chocolate chips The Best Snack But one of my favorite snacks I love to make is trail mix because you can put whatever you want, and mix it up, and eat it.

1 handful of mini pretzels In a bowl, mix together all the ingredients then put them in sandwich bags for whenever you feel the need for a snack on the go!

Jillian Jensen With a new album on the way, a strong message about antbullying and a following of loyal fans, this former X-Factor sensation is well on her way to becoming a bona fide star. Get to know her in this exclusive interview.

Interview by Grace Hatton

Miss Moxie: You’ve been playing music and composing since you were a child what made you want to become a musician?

Jillian Jensen: Music is

fall ‘13 missmoxieonline.com

honestly the only thing in my life that I just love and am passionate about, I don’t think anything in particular made me want to become a musician. It just happened.

MM: Who has been your biggest inspiration on your musical journey? JJ: I’ve had a lot of inspirations, but most recently Ed Sheeran and his writing has gotten me through a lot in the past eight months. MM: Last year on the X-Factor you made quite an impact with your emotional rendition of ‘Who You Are’ and your story of surviving bullying. Can you tell us more about your experience of being bullied? JJ: In 7th grade I was offered cocaine by a fellow student and I ratted him out.

From there I was tortured and went to a different school. That was when I became more vocal about my writing of music and people found any reason to bring me down and take my dream away from me. (That’s the extremely short version) MM: How have those experiences affected you as you’ve grown into a woman? JJ: At first, they affected me in a very negative way. I suffered from self harm, depression, bulimia; I attempted suicide on quite a few occasions.

14

JJ: But honestly, in return it taught me a lot about myself and my strength and how to correctly treat people as a result of how badly I was treated. MM: Do you believe your experiences have made you stronger? JJ: Absolutely, without a doubt in my mind. MM: What advice would you give to teenagers going through a similar situation? JJ: You just have to find what you know you need in your life, for me it’s music. Find that thing you love and go after it, put all your focus into it

JJ: While going through bullying there was a two year period where I lost myself and did anything I could to fit in and get acceptance. I told myself after that that I would never ever try to be something I am not just to please someone else. So the song who you are has a lot of personal meaning for me in my own life and I knew it was the song I wanted to sing. MM: How does it feel to get such a positive reaction from your audition? JJ: It honestly touched my heart in such a beautiful way and gave me so much more strength than you can ever imagine. MM: How as the X-Factor changed your life? JJ: Well, I get to make a change on a much grander scale and that’s all I’ve ever wanted

and allow it to guide you through the dark times.

MM: Why did you choose to sing ‘Who You Are’ on X-Factor? 15

to help others through my music and experiences.

MM: Can you tell us more about the antibullying campaigns you’ve been working with since the X-Factor? JJ: What I do is go into schools and speak about my story, but from a growth stand point; meaning that’s where I was and this is where I am. My goal is to show kids that regardless of what you go through you can achieve your dreams and you can be your own hero. I stress that kids just need to be nicer to each other and to Stop Hate and Start Love. So far, I’ve been blessed to touch many lives and I am very grateful for that.

lot and I had the honor of singing with him in NYC in March. After that experience I remember thinking about how much music has saved me and how it’s crazy that one artist or one song can change your mood on even your worst day. Essentially the song is talking about how music got me out of my depression and suicide attempts. It’s quite heavy lyrically, but it has a very light feel musically so that it’s inspiring versus depressing. MM: What do you wish to accomplish with your music?

JJ: I wish to get on a tour with a major act; maybe even Ed Sheeran?

MM: Can you tell us what message is behind your new single ‘I am Whole’? JJ: In the past eight

months Ed Sheeran’s music has gotten me through a

LIVE YOUR LIFE HOW TO…….

Stand In Your Power

By Tonya Dawn Recla

As school sessions kick into gear, it’s time to focus on reading, writing and arithmetic. Classes and school education are important, but something happens at school that’s even more essential.

This is where you learn who you are, who you want to be and how you want to contribute to the world. This is where you develop your personal POWER. fall ‘13 missmoxieonline.com

17

LIVE YOUR LIFE

So what is personal POWER? It’s you when you’re confident, loving and aware of your surroundings. It’s the voice inside of you that says you matter and you’re important. It’s the gauge you use to decide right from wrong…for you.

Personal POWER is true, intrinsic strength. It has nothing to do with inserting your will over others or stepping on people to get what you want. It has everything to do with establishing a foundation of inner knowing and truth for yourself. Developing this POWER is a very personal and individual journey.

And, here’s a secret, you’re already doing it.

Every time you say “no” to something you know isn’t right for you, you stand in your personal POWER.

Every time you reach further, run faster, try harder, or don’t give up, you stand your POWER. Every time you say “YES” to you, you send a message to every aspect of your mind, body and spirit that you matter.

And what’s more important than standing in your own personal POWER? Encouraging others to do the same. Every time you stand up for someone else who is too scared to say “no,” you stand in your POWER and you show them how it’s done.

18

LIVE YOUR LIFE Marianne Williamson said,

“And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

In our world full of bullies, intolerance, peer pressure, suicides, and generally unhappy people, those who choose to stand in their personal POWER and allow those around them to do the same are the new superheroes.

They’re the ones who others look to when things get tough. They’re the ones others secretly want to be like because their confidence and self-assuredness shine through even the murkiest of human interactions.

Something magical happens when you’re the one who finds her inner knowing and your friends watch you stand tall in conviction. You become the beacon everyone follows and you lead with a generosity and love that only come from true personal POWER. So you may not formally take a class regarding personal development or self-discovery. But recognize that compared to your other subjects, realizing your personal POWER is by far the most important thing you can do this school year.
