MIAMI LAKES, FLORIDA

Erika proved to be a tuneup for rest of Hurricane season By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff The year 2015 marks a decade following the infamous hurricane Katrina, the storm that is remembered as one of the most catastrophic in the U.S. Despite the relative calm in recent years and, thankfully missing all but a rain event from Erika, proper precautions should still be routine as the hurricane season runs through November 30. The National Hurricane Center, as part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, highlights the main four ways to prepare for a hurricane: Gather information, plan and take action, recover, and resources. Gathering information entails knowing whether one lives in an evacuation area, assessing risks, and understanding a home’s vulnerabilities to storm surge, flooding and wind. Keeping an emergency contact list is suggested including the names of local emergency management offices, county law enforcement, local hospitals, and local American Red Cross locations, among others. Homeowners can check their risk analysis online with FEMA’s map portal or with floodsmart.gov portal. Planning and taking action includes preparing a basic disaster supplies kit, devising emergency

plans and making sure everyone in the home is aware of those plans, pet owners finding options for their pet care, and finding shelter away from home. It is encouraged that families review FEMA’s evacuation guidelines and reviewing the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) health considerations before, during and after a storm. Also, remember to follow the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) food and water safety guidelines. Recover refers to recovering from a disaster situation which includes seeking disaster assistance, helping others, health and safety guidelines, and returning home. Resources include guides from FEMA, FDA, American Red Cross and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Mayor’s claim for $3.2M in legal fees could bankrupt Miami Lakes By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff Miami Lakes might have to cough up $3.2 million if the town is forced to pay Mayor Michael Pizzi’s legal bills from his criminal trial and reinstatement lawsuits that ultimately returned him to political office following his acquittal on public corruption charges. Last week, Pizzi filed two lawsuits against Miami Lakes demanding the town pay his team of attorneys for their legal services. A hearing was scheduled for Tuesday, September 1, 2015 before Circuit Court Judge Jennifer D. Bailey. His lawyers, including Ed Shohat, Ben Kuehne and David Reiner, defended him during his federal bribery trial that lasted for three months last year and the subsequent reinstatement lawsuits. The Florida Supreme Court forced Governor Rick Scott to lift Pizzi’s suspension, which paved the way for his reinstatement in the lower courts in March. Pizzi said his attorneys have not been compensated since they filed an affidavit and subsequently submitted several invoices to the town for their fees. “Despite persistent requests, the town has refused to pay the reasonable costs and legal fees for Mayor Pizzi’s resumption to office litigation,” the lawsuit said. However, Town Attorney Raul Gastesi said they never submitted the hours they spent working on the cases, among other facts and figures, to determine how much money they are actually owed.

The attorneys reportedly are seeking about $750,000 for his reinstatement cases and $2.5 million for his criminal trial. Miami Lakes set aside $250,000 for attorney fees for the reinstatement lawsuits in the upcoming budget and is banking on the Town’s insurance company, Brown and Brown, to cover the legal bills. But the amount is a far cry from what Pizzi’s attorneys are demanding, an amount that could break the town’s budget for 20152016 if the insurance company doesn’t come through. If Miami Lakes is found liable for the entire amount, it could force the town into bankruptcy. Pizzi told reporters his lawsuit isn’t against Miami Lakes but to assure the town’s insurance company pay the legal bills to spare taxpayers from any economic hardship. It was not known by press time if Pizzi’s lawyers requested legal fees from the town of Medley. Town Manager Alex Rey said, “The criminal case is complicated.” At the time of his arrest, Pizzi was Medley’s town attorney, where the FBI public corruption sting took place as well. The lawsuit is the latest saga that keeps Miami Lakes in the spotlight since Pizzi’s acquittal to the dismay of some residents who referred to his antics as a circus sideshow. Resident Walter B. Duke said Miami Lakes is not the same town as when he first moved here. “The town’s image takes a beating,” he said on his Facebook page.

Some residents indicated they understood Miami Lakes’ paying for the reinstatement lawsuit fees but the criminal cost is inconceivable. “I can understand the town being liable for the reinstatement lawsuit, but the criminal portions was all because of his questionable actions and he should pay for his own defense,” said resident Armando G. Valdes. Said Louis Martinez, an attorney: “I am not sure he should get his criminal legal fees but the reinstatement fees he should get. Miami Lakes should have immediately followed the law.” Councilmember Frank Mingo said he can’t believe the mayor is suing the hard working taxpayers for his bad judgment. “I stand with residents and I will not vote to give him one cent of the taxpayer’s money,” Mingo said.

M-Dade Public Schools staff joins educators attending ‘Rethink Discipline’ meet at White House Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho, Deputy Superintendent Valtena Brown and Chief Academic Officer Marie Izquierdo joined other educators from across the nation at a gathering hosted by the U.S. Departments of Education and Justice in late July. The event, “Rethink Discipline,” a daylong conference at the White House, was focused on helping school districts create positive school climates and implement effective discipline practices. “At M-DCPS, we strive to implement consequences without depriving students of valuable instructional time,” said Carvalho. “If students are not in school, whether absent or suspended, they are not learning.” “Today’s conference shows that there are leaders across the country who are committed to doing this work,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. “We are proud to stand as partners with these educators to say that we have to continue to do better for all of our students.” According to data from the Civil Rights Data Collection (CRDC), the number of students losing critical learning time due to out of school suspensions and expulsions is staggering. Over three million students are suspended or expelled every year. State data shows Miami-Dade County has among the lowest suspension rates in the state – about 10 percent.

Lakes pianist, Jeremy Matthews, 4, fights childhood cancer By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Little Miami Lakes resident Jeremy Matthews is a young piano student with a deep love and appreciation for music and cars. In most regards, Matthews is like many 4-year-olds, with the exception of his eyes. He has been fighting Bilateral Retinoblastoma, a rare form of eye cancer that affects the retina, since he was 15 months old. Despite having a great pregnancy and giving birth to a healthy baby boy who met all developmental milestones, Matthews’ mother, Jackie, visited a ophthalmologist on the recommendation

of his pediatrician. Matthews was then diagnosed with Retinoblastoma affecting both eyes, one of which, his left eye, he would have removed by 2-years-old. He has since been fitted with a prosthetic. Retinoblastoma, despite being a congenital illness, was not found in either parent or Matthews’ younger brother. Also, strangely, despite being a rare form of eye cancer, Jackie has reached out to three other families within her same zip code with children fighting Retinoblastoma. The loss of Matthews’ left eye has deemed him legally blind, a title that has had little affect on Matthews musical abilities.

Main Street Players present The Pot starting September 23 By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff The Pot, a timely and culturally relevant play for the community and nation, centers on the idea “Who Am I? On Thanksgiving, a family comes together and is forced to reconsider notions of race, immigration, hope and the melting pot. When Laura brings home her new boyfriend, Rick, an undocumented Mexican immigrant to her parents George, a newly elected state senator, and Mary, the pot is stirred and the heat is raised. Additionally, Laura’s adoptive brother, Nathan, has never known his biological parents or his biracial roots and must come to terms with his identity while writing a

college term paper. The Pot explores what defines, unites and separates people. The Pot was written by Glenn Hutchinson, is directed by Ivan R. Lopez, and will feature the talents of Pedro Sanon, Sofi Sassone, Clint Archambault, Melissa Ann Hubicsak, Joel Kolker, Clara Lyzniak, Dylan NuĂąez and Michelle L. Antelo. The Pot will run from September 25 through October 18 on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are available online at www.mainstreetplayers.com or at the door at 6766 Main Street, Miami Lakes. For more information on the play, call The Main Street Playhouse at 305-558-3737.

Matthews practices piano at Miami Lakes based studio, Generations Piano Studio, and is taught by Jessica Comellas. “I knew I would be taking on the greatest challenge I’ve ever faced as a piano teacher not only because of his age, but because of his vision impairment, said Comellas. “But seeing that smile on Jeremy's face and his excitement when listening to different sounds has made it all worth it! He has learned and remembered some difficult concepts such as note names and values which is difficult even for some older students to grasp. When finding certain keys or groups of keys on the piano, he relies on his sense of touch to find them based on the groups of black keys, we like to call them ‘Oreo cookies’ because they’re like the two cookies and cream filling of an Oreo. Using this technique, he is right almost 100 percent of the time. Matthews has performed in two recitals, London Bridges and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. He is preparing for his third recital this winter. “I am overwhelmed by his spirit and personality and I am truly grateful to have the privilege of not only teaching, but knowing such an inspirational young pianist, said Comellas. Despite several rounds of chemo treatments and frequent visits to the University of Miami’s Bascom Palmer Institute, the top eye hospital in the nation, Matthews has maintained an active and happy childhood thanks for

He just got his own keyboard. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and the Matthews’ family cautions parents to “Know the Glow, a phrase used by the medical community to keep watch for children’s eyes in photographs that instead of glowing red,

Miami Lakes Town Council:

Summary of expected actions at September 1 meeting The Miami Lakes Town Council held its monthly regular meeting on Tuesday, September 1, to give its final approval for an ordinance, several resolutions and discuss some new business items. • The Council was expected to give its final approval for an ordinance to create a new Town Center zoning district, and rezone the Town Center area to the new zoning district. The Town Center is currently under two different districts, the RM-50 district, apartments at up to 50 dwelling units per acre, and the BU-2 district, a standard commercial district that allows all but the most intense retail and businesses uses. Miami Lakes Town Center has been envisioned since the original master plan for the town as a walkable, mixed-use area similar to a traditional small town “Main Street,” and is centered on Main Street development east and west

of N.W. 67 Avenue. The proposed TC District regulations constitute a form-based code, which means it uses physical form, rather than separation of uses, as its organizing principle. The most important requirements of the proposed regulations include hierarchy of street types, maximum building setbacks and minimum building frontage, transferability of development rights, minimum glazing, location of vehicular parking and provisions for loading, parking management strategies, access management, incentive for rooftop commercial activity, aggregation of open space and landscaping and sidewalk widths and improvements. • Council members were expected to approve a resolution to give Town Manager Alex Rey or his designee the power to reduce civil penalties and administrative costs for code enforcement violators who fail to comply with the

town’s code. • Lawmakers were expected to approve a resolution, sponsored by Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez, which allows the town clerk to handle the speaker cards and call up the names of residents who wish to address the Town Council. Those duties were previously handled by the mayor. • Council members were expected to adopt a resolution, sponsored by Councilmember Tony Lama, that prevents the entire Town Council from using the town staff, resources and letter for nontown sponsored events. • Lawmakers were expected to approve a resolution to change the town’s Miami Lakes Moover bus route to better serve the riders in the 6.5 square-mile city. Staff has fine tuned the route that travels south on Ludlam Road and west on Miami Lakes Drive, to provide twice daily connection to Hialeah Miami Lakes High School before school entry and during dismissal time. The extension to HML will provide about 400 Miami Lakes residents attending the school the opportunity to take transit to school to help reduce traffic gridlock. • Lawmakers were expected to approve a resolution to authorize the town manger to execute a change order contract for paving and striping for the new parking lot and walkways for the new Park East Youth Center in the amount

not to exceed $15,000 to American Asphalt Equipment Corp. The agreement increases the value of the contract from $47,500 to $62,000 for the installation of the asphalt for the new basketball court. • Council members were expected to discuss Vice Mayor Manny Cid’s proposed legislation to direct the town manger to waive any possible application fees for the 40 homeowners who complied with the air conditioning enclosure requirement before council members decided to eliminate the requirement. Cid said it’s not fair that the residents who spoke before lawmakers in July about eliminating the requirement because it would cost them a lot of money don’t have to pay the fees. Cid said the fees should include

facility rental fees, garage sale and permit fees. • Council members were expected to discuss Mayor Michael Pizzi’s report on the Miami-Dade School Board’s funding of the adult community classes at the Mary Collins Community Center. Pizzi said Miami-Dade Public Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho said the Florida Legislature did not renew funding to school districts to provide those services, and due to legal restrictions on K-12 funding, the district has no other means of continuing to offer the services for the upcoming school year. However, Carvalho said he reached out to the governor’s office and State Senator Rene Garcia to find a solution to resume the classes.

Final senior baseball trip for the season set for Sept. 24 Miami Lakes Elderly Affairs Committee is offering free field trips to Miami Marlins games once a month on Thursdays for residents 55 years and above. The bus departs from Town Hall, 6601 Main Street and guests should arrive two hours before game time. ID is required to show proof of age. Space is limited. Reserve seating on the bus one week in

advance of each of the field trip dates by contacting Special Events and Committees coordinator Clarisell De Cardenas at decardenasc@miamilakes-fl.gov, or 305364-6100. Also at the meeting, county commissioners were expected to give their final vote on two ordinances to create the special taxing districts and a resolution for the fees for the lake maintenance. If the special taxing district is approved, the combined annual costs of the district’s lake maintenance services for the initial maintenance program for Lake Hilda are estimated at $22,723 ($202.85 per lot) for the first year and $11,634 ($103.88 per lot) for the second year. For Lake Patricia, the fees are $22,144 ($303.35 per lot) for the first year, and $10,423 ($142.79 per lot) for the second year. Miami-Dade Commission set to act on establishing two new M. Lakes taxing districts Miami-Dade County Commissioners, at their September 1 regular meeting, were expected to establish special taxing districts for lake maintenance in the communities of Lake Patricia and Lake Hilda after residents living in those communities collected petition signatures to have the county maintain the cleanliness and appearance of their lakes. For many years, the lake maintenance responsibility has been funded and managed by a small group of concerned residents. Before the special taxing district can be established, the county required residents to complete a three stop process, including collecting at least 50 percent of signatures of fellow neighbors in both communities, the county initiating a comprehensive study of the proposed areas, and a special election for residents living in those communities to determine if

News and Notes from the Town of Miami Lakes Residents invited to create name for town’s Dog Park A new dog park in Miami Lakes needs a name and the town is sponsoring a contest for residents to choose one for the offleash dog recreation area, which is scheduled to open in 2016. The dog park will be located at 14048 Palmetto Frontage Road (N.W. 77 Court). Miami Lakes canines and their owners have been eagerly wagging their tails awaiting the opening of dog park since the town approved the recreation area concept plan in 2013. For the contest, entries can be e-mailed to Jackie Calzadilla at calzadillaj@miamilakes-fl.gov with “Dog Park Name Contest” as the subject line. Submissions can be also sent by mail to the Town of Miami Lakes, Attn: Name the Dog Park Contest, 6601 Main Street, Miami Lakes, FL 33014. The deadline is Wednesday, September 30, at 5 p.m. The dog recreation area’s name

based on the winning entrant’s submission will be revealed at the groundbreaking and naming ceremony at a date to be announced, along with a commemorative plaque, recognizing the winner for their creativity. All entries will be judged by a group of volunteers picked by the town and the winner will be chosen based on originality and uniqueness. The contest is open to all residents. Submissions are limited to one entry per person. The proposed dog recreation area will feature both a passive recreational area and two separate fenced areas for smaller and larger dogs. The area also includes benches, drinking fountains for the dogs and a joint open air shelter for use by pet owners. In addition, the site incorporates a portion of the proposed 10 foot wide bike trail along the south side of Palmetto Frontage Road.

‘Lakes Life’ mobile app now offers ‘Pedestrian Perspective’ “Lakes Life,” the Town of Miami Lakes’ mobile app, not only keeps residents in the know about current happenings, but also serves as a way to help the Town plan for the future. “Pedestrian Perspective” is an initiative spearheaded by the Town’s Planning Department to ensure the improvement of transportation infrastructure. Similar to entering a request using “Lakes Life,” residents can submit their concerns regarding unsafe bike paths, incomplete sidewalks and missing bus stops, among other things. Once in the mobile app, navigate to “New Request” and scroll down to the “Pedestrian Perspective” category

to enter the submission. Be sure to turn on “Location Settings” on the mobile device in order to achieve the most accurate reporting. Input will help Town staff better identify where transportation infrastructure can be improved. Feedback will be recorded and used to update current and future improvement plans. Staff noted that no immediate action will be taken on information received via the “Pedestrian Perspective,” however, they assure that the information is very valuable to help make better future decisions. For more information about the mobile app, visit www.LakesLife Moble.com.

Com. Jordan sponsors Summer Youth Internships While most high school and college students file paperwork during their summer internships, 34 aspiring professionals got reallife experience thanks to Commissioner Barbara Jordan’s Summer Youth Internship Initiative (SYII). For eight to 10 weeks, students were paid to gain valuable work experience in County government and the private sector. One of the students in the SYII program was 19-year old Alexis Alexander, a sophomore at Florida Memorial University in Miami who is majoring in Criminal

Justice. She interned in the exciting field of aviation at Orion Jet Center, located at the Miami Opa Locka Executive Airport. “I found that Orion Jet Center was very family-oriented,” said Alexander, who was ecstatic about her temporary employment experience. “I was able to develop my communication, social, organizational and commercial awareness skills.” “Collectively, businesses in the SYII program are grooming tomorrow’s leaders to carry the torch of providing first-class customer service and industry best

practices,” Jordan said. “These companies are making an investment in human capital and the students are appreciative of their commitment.” Nineteen-year old Keith Roye, a native of Nassau, Bahamas, is currently a senior majoring in computer science with a concentration in mathematics at Florida Memorial University. He intends to fulfill his dream of becoming a renowned software engineer. “Working with the Summer Youth Internship Initiative program has been one of the best experiences of my life,” said Roye, who interned at MCO Construction. “It was a very humbling and exciting opportunity for me, as I was taught so many life lessons both in and out of the office.” Entering the SYII program was no walk in the park. Students underwent an extensive interview process. They were also required to attend a daylong orientation session with a motivational speaker, life coach and several entrepreneurs. Kasia Tremble, a sophomore at Miami-Dade College, attended the orientation session, which was inspirational for her since she is majoring in Interior Design. The 19-year old, who is creative in all aspects of life, plans to focus on innovation. This summer, Tremble was placed in Jordan’s downtown office, where she obtained experience in local government. She now understands that business owners must interact with the County before launching their establish-

the window of opportunity for young men and women who are eager to enter the workforce,” Jordan said. “I feel that it is my obligation to adequately prepare them for real-life situations. I am confident that my office and our business partners have done just that.”

M-D Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho visits Miami Lakes schools on first day of class By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Alberto M. Carvalho, began his school tour while students were still relishing their last Sunday of summer break. Carvalho’s stops included schools where new choice programs are being inaugurated for the benefit of students. On Sunday, August 23, Carvalho visited Miami Central Senior High School’s new magnet programs in Trade and Logistics and an iPrep academy. Shortly after, Carvalho visited Key Biscayne K-8 Center to inspect improvements made possible by the General Obligation Bond and a newly constructed classroom wing at MAST Academy on the Rickenbacker Causeway. Carvalho ended his day at his own school where he serves as principal at the iPrep Academy. The Superintendent continued

his visits the following day, the first day back to school, with an early start at 5:20 a.m. to share breakfast and words of encouragement with bus drivers at the John H. Schee Transportation Center. Carvalho then boarded a bus en route to his first school of the 2015-2016 school year, Barbara Goleman Senior High School, to check on the school’s new magnet programs in National Security Intelligence Studies. Hialeah Miami Lakes (HML) was the next school on Carvalho’s route with a pit stop to the new Digital Media Technology and Entrepreneurship Magnet. Downtown Doral Charter Elementary School, Miami Carol City Senior High School, and Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Senior High School all received visits from Carvalho throughout the day before the Superintendent finished the first day of school, like the day before, back at his home school,

iPrep Academy. HML Principal, Eric Acosta, said “Superintendent Carvalho is a great supporter of Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High and our community. His visits on the first day of school is another testament to his commitment to our students, teachers and parents.” HML and Goleman, two local feeder pattern high schools for students in the Miami Lakes community and surrounding areas, have introduced magnet programs that will continue to enhance and facilitate learning for students. Goleman has introduced a oneof-a-kind National Security Intelligence Magnet program that will work in conjunction with the Florida Bureau of Investigation, Miami Division. HML’s Digital Media Technology and Entrepreneurship Magnet continues to build on preparation for students outside of high school when gearing up for post-secondary education and career options. “This is an exciting time to be a student at HML,” said Acosta. “Student performance is at an alltime high and we continue to add innovative programs designed to prepare students for an ever-evolving and complex world. Water safety shouldn’t go away in Fall and Winter By Miren Oca Director of Ocaquatics Special to The Miami Laker Even with school already in session and the fall season right around the corner, the weather is still warm and pools are still a fun place for families to relax and enjoy each other. Information on water safety is important to all parents of toddlers and children even at this time of the year. With so many lakes, canals and swimming pools in our area and

with so many drownings in our community every year, it is clear that more needs to be done to prevent water accidents. After working with families for so many years, we believe parents have many misconceptions about drowning and about what it takes to keep it from happening. They think it only happens to children with “bad” parents, but that’s just not the case. A drowning can happen quickly and quietly, and it can happen to anyone.

Most parents would be surprised to find out that most drownings of young children occur in backyard pools and that it often happens during a time when a child is in the care of one or both parents. Most young children who have drowned had been missing for less than five minutes when the tragedy occurred. With these kinds of statistics, parents need to do everything they can to help their children become safer around the water. Ocaquatics has adopted the Safer 3 Water Safety Foundation's message of the SAFER 3. The letter "R" in the word SAFER reminds us that there is always RISK when in, on or around water. Follow the SAFER 3: Safer Water, Safer People, and Safer Response! For Safer Water, fence your pool and lock your gate. Learn to identify the risk associated with activities in, on and around the water and how to reduce those risks. Parents should place several barriers between the home and the pool. That means installing locks on every door and window leading to the pool area. The fence should be equipped with self-closing and self-latching gates, and should prevent direct access to the pool from the house. Four sided isolation fencing in every pool could prevent 50-90 percent of childhood drownings and near drownings. Other barriers include pool and hot tub covers and pool alarms that will alert parents if a child falls into the water. For Safer People, constant adult supervision is key to preventing accidents around the water and no

child should ever be left unattended around pools or open water. Children should only be near the pool when there is a responsible adult watching the pool. This is especially important when there is a pool party or many people in the pool. When everyone is watching, then no one is watching! Everyone assumes that another person is watching the water and that is when an accident can happen. One person should always be designated the water watcher and a Water Watcher tag helps to designate the responsible adult that will be watching the pool. That designated person should have no other job (cooking, serving, entertaining, etc) or have any alcoholic beverage. The tag will help make it easy to identify the person responsible for watching the pool. In addition you should teach your kids to swim. Even toddlers can learn basic swimming skills that they can use if they ever end up in the water. And a good swimming program will always teach safer behaviors for children and families around the pool. However, even children with

excellent swimming skills need the watchful eye of an adult to help keep them safer around the water. For Safer Response, preparation is needed. Would you know what to do in an emergency situation. If you had to, could you perform CPR on a loved one? Reduce the risk during an emergency by learning emergency response techniques. Adults should know how to perform CPR, and should post emergency instructions near the pool. Families should have an emergency action plan and a phone nearby at all times. Carry a cell or cordless phone outside in case of an emergency. We feel that Following the SAFER 3 is the way to keep your family safer around the water! To learn more about the national Safer 3 Water Safety Foundation visit www.safer3.org. Miren Oca is the director of Ocaquatics Swim School in Hialeah Gardens. Ocaquatics is dedicated to keeping families SAFER around the water. For more information, visit www.ocaquatics.com.

In addition, his classical crossover recordings have been widely acclaimed, as have his soundtracks and work for French television. Bolling became a major name

in the United States after the 1975 release of “Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio,” recorded with flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal, who would become a long-time collaborator. Pianist Adolfo Vidal joins Ernesto Fernandez on the flute with a jazz trio from the University of Miami. Suggested donation is $20. Former Dade Christian player Nick Martinez returns as new head coach By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff According to new head coach Nick Martinez, Dade Christian’s football team draws a comparison to the 2006 and 2012 units. And he should know since he played on both of those teams. The 2006 team went undefeated in the regular season before losing in the state semifinal, and the 2012 squad was two quarters away from winning the state championship, the team’s best accomplishment in years. “This team has the skills, passion, leadership and the togetherness we had in 2006 and 2012,” said Martinez, who replaces his former coach and mentor Mike Sonneborn. “They’ve also got that vibe we had that helped carry us that far.” Martinez’s expectations for his team is winning the state championship following a 6-4 season that ended in the first round of the playoffs last year.

LET’S HEAR FROM YOU! Got a story idea about your family, school, church, organization or even a neighbor? Email us at miamilaker1@aol.com, or call 305-817-4078.

“This team now can put us over the hump,” said Martinez, who was an assistant coach under Sonneborn last year. The Crusaders’ preseason match up with North Broward Prep last month gave Martinez a good look at the team he has assembled that includes eight returning starters on each side of the football. “The game went well for us and we got the opportunity to see what we are made of entering the regular season,” he said. Martinez and his offensive coaches were equally impressed with sophomore quarterback Alec Carr, as the 5-10 and 215-pound nimble athlete has been picked to lead the offense over several upperclassmen. “The kid is extremely gifted and extremely intelligent,” Martinez said. The Crusaders’ backfield features three running backs who also play on the defensive side of the football. Led by 5-11, 210-pound senior Tim Mcintosh, who also plays safety, Martinez calls his group the “Running Committee” along with 5-5, 155-pound freshmen Michael Hunt and 5-4, 190-pound junior John Wright. Martinez said he is also high on 6-0, 175-pound junior linebacker Raymond Moore. “He has size and speed,” Martinez said. Following a breakout college career at Eastern Illinois as a defensive back, Martinez said ini-

NICK MARTINEZ tially he didn’t see coaching in his future until he returned to his alma mater where he became an assistant coach. “Coaching was not always something I wanted to do, but coaching under Sonneborn I saw me doing this some day,” Martinez said. “The experience, so far, has been awesome besides replacing him.” The Crusaders players are optimistic about the season and they value their coach’s leadership. “We look real good and better than what we expected,” said Moore. Jordan Coley, a 5-9, 166-pound junior player, said he likes what he sees. “The team is real positive,” he said. “Overall, it looks good on offense, defense and special teams.”

Goleman’s football team goes through rebuilding campaign By David L. Snelling The Miami Laker staff This season, Barbara Goleman High School’s football team is going through a transition after losing a group of seniors and relying on the bulk of freshmen and sophomore players to carry the team through a challenging season. Using the single wing offense, head coach Ariel Cabrera’s team features freshman quarterback Darryn Jones, freshman running back John Correa and his backfield partner Kalonji Hill. “Darryn Jones is very mature for his age which is the reason why he’s our starting quarterback,” Cabrera said before the team’s season opening loss last week against Western High of Davie, 29-0. With the single wing offense, Cabrera will rely on the offensive

line and a lot of tight ends. When they throw the ball, sophomore wide receiver Kayshawn Lanoru is Jones’ main target. On defense, the Gators have outside linebacker senior Ramon Ruiz, who Cabrera said is one of the team’s better defensive players, and Ivan Martinez, who played middle linebacker last year but moved to defensive end because he got bigger during the summer. The team’s defensive backs include sophomore free safety Marcner Richard. Cabrera said this season is challenging because his young but talented team will be matched up against district foes Miami Springs, Mater Academy and Ronald Reagan.

M-D Schools bus fleet offers new services for kids, parents Running as smoothly as the military on maneuvers, MiamiDade Public Schools’ bus drivers took their fleet of buses to the streets early in the morning a week before the start of classes for a dry run of the 952 routes they will operate throughout the school year to transport nearly 60,000 students. Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho was at the Southwest Transportation Garage to greet drivers and discuss the District’s latest initiatives for transportation, the most popular being WiFi-on-the-Go, which provides mobile “hot spots” on District owned school buses so that students have additional time to study or research a project while on board. Two other initiatives, Flex

Stops and GPS Bus Pilot were also launched. Flex Stops will provide more than 800 students with transportation access to their Magnet programs at eight schools across the county. This pilot program satisfies the need to transport magnet students who do not reside within the Transportation Service Zone area but are near a bus route with available seating capacity. The program is created near a school or park and will pick up several students at a time and it is established based on the number of magnet students residing in the area. GPS Bus Pilot, a school bus tracking system, will give parents and students the ability to track the whereabouts of their assigned bus.

BARBARA GOLEMAN SENIOR HIGH’S Jewels Dance Team participated in the National Dance Competition at the Broward County Convention Center. their Bid to Nationals for February. Team instructor, Sara Yanes, also came home with a NDA Coaching Credentials for the 2015-2016 season. The Jewels will begin competition season this year on December 5 and they will be attending the Florida Cheer and Dance Associations’ Sunfest in Coral Springs. Following is the NCA/NDA Sunshine Classic on January 10 in Lakeland. On February 20, the team will participate in the South Florida Sizzler in Ft. Lauderdale and the Nationals

Competition will be February 26 28. “This team has really come a long way in a very short amount of time,” said Yanes. “At this year’s camp, they were the team with the youngest dancers being that the team is only comprised of 9th and 10th graders. I am extremely proud of their achievements thus far. They were able to bring home the bronze for the team performance routine category, showing they have the ability, commitment, dedication and passion for dance needed to be a successful team.”

Basulto Special to The Miami Laker Nearly a decade of hard work and passion have built up Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s Drama program into one of the most prominent academies at the school. On August 19, the Academy of Visual & Performing

Arts Theatre Program celebrated the next leap forward in its history with the official opening of its new black box theater. The theater, funded entirely by donations and made up of several classrooms merged into one giant room, allows drama students to rehearse and perform in their own

Hialeah Gardens donation will support town’s schools Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) situated within the boundaries of Hialeah Gardens, will benefit from financial in-kind support from the City of Hialeah Gardens through it’s Educational Center valued at $596,982. This generous contribution by the City is a result of an allocation from the Florida State Legislature for the purpose of increasing student access to computer stations, providing printers, tablets, monitors, and mobile devices as well as other technology-related supplied

designed to enhance school technology at public schools located in Hialeah Gardens. “As School Board chair and as the School Board member representing District 4, I am pleased and very grateful that the City of Hialeah Gardens, through the efforts of Mayor Yioset De La Cruz, has made such a generous contribution, which is designed to strengthen the technological capabilities of our schools within the City,” said Perla Tabares Hantman.

dedicated space, complete with mirrors, prop boxes, and an audience setup for small, intimate performances. It also operates as the classroom for Cristina PlaGuzman, lead teacher for Pace’s Theatre Program. “This has been a dream since my first year here,” said PlaGuzman, who became Pace’s drama teacher in 2007 and has led the program since. “We have a very great facility to have lots of interesting and innovative things. I look forward to doing things like student-directed scenes, small cabaret performances, and hosting Open Mic Night this school year.” To celebrate the theater’s opening and the program’s storied history, Pla-Guzman and the Drama club invited Pace parents, alumni, and friends to a ribbon cutting ceremony. Guests dined on an array of foods, reconnected with past and current students, and experienced the black box theater for the first time with performances from seniors Victoria Jebian and Antonio Rodriguez. “I think [the black box theater] is amazing, it’s bigger than I ever expected,” said Kenea Sejour, a Pace Class of 2015 alumna who is currently majoring in musical theater at the University of Jacksonville. “I can’t wait to have technical classes in here and be able to make

props, sets, and have our space to do shows,” said Alex Pereda, sophomore and Pace Drama’s Head of Sound. Sophia Lama, another sophomore and Pace Drama’s Prop Master, agreed that the theater would give students new found freedom, saying “I’m excited about experimenting with the space, getting creative, and being able to build our own settings in a

free and personal space.” Regular performances will still be held in the school’s Spartan Center, but Pla-Guzman says she hopes to one day have a fullfledged theater with a larger stage and work space on campus. Pace Drama is already using the black box theater to hold auditions and prepare for its Fall 2015 show “Night of the Living Dead,” which will open October 28-30.

By R.A. Romero The Miami Laker staff Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High School (HML) is reviving its Drama program, the very same that produced the likes of Vincent D’Onofrio of “Law and Order: Criminal Intent,” and Maria Canal-Barrera, best known for her role on Disney’s “Wizards of Waverly Place.” The program has been out of commission for about five years but was brought back to the spotlight with the help of last year’s new school principal, Eric Acosta, who has worked hard to fan the flame of school spirit by including programs that students were eager for, such as drama and dance. “He devoted significant time to finding the resources within his budget to make those classes a reality,” said new drama teacher, Colleen Kiah. “Judging by the well-over 300 students who have signed up for my classes alone, I would say the students are very appreciative of Mr. Acosta’s efforts.” Kiah was previously an English teacher and Reading Interventionist for HML before her current position of drama teacher. Despite her recent roles, Kiah has had several years of experience teaching drama for two different schools in Central New York. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Secondary English Education for Writing and Literature, a Master’s degree in Secondary English Education for Writing and Literature and a Certificate of Advanced Studies in School Leadership. “I am extremely pleased and honored to have been chosen for this position. How often does a teacher get the opportunity to build and guide a program from scratch? It’s very exciting!” said Kiah. “I want the classes to be active, engaging, and fun so I plan on doing a variety of activities

COLLEEN KIAH every day from yoga to improv. In between, we will study the mechanics of theater, not just acting, but costuming, makeup, lighting/sound, back of house and front of house responsibilities.” Kiah’s personal favorite plays are “The Crucible” and “A Streetcar Named Desire,” no doubt, having read them so often for her English courses, Kiah is well-acquainted with the characters and readings. Kiah plans to launch the first year of the drama program with a series on One-Act plays instead of a single production as a way to get many students on stage while limiting expenditures. As for the revival of the drama program, Kiah believes in the importance of the arts within the educational setting. “The theater allows students to live the lives of others, to learn from the characters’ mistakes without having to actually make those mistakes themselves,” said Kiah. “More pragmatically, the skills learned on and off the stage will assist our students in their futures, no matter what fields they choose.”

Miami Dade College ranked high in Great Colleges for work For the seventh consecutive year, Miami-Dade College (MDC) has been named among the nation’s Great Colleges to Work For by The Chronicle of Higher Education, a major higher education publication. In addition, MDC again made the honor roll for recognition in multiple categories. The college is the only public higher education institution in South Florida named to the list, which has been published online at The Chronicle’s website. “We are humbled and honored to once again receive this recognition. It truly speaks to the faculty

MDC was recognized in eight different categories: Collaborative governance; confidence in senior leadership; diversity; job satisfaction; professional/career development programs; respect and appreciation; supervisor/department chair relationship; and teaching environment. Other major institutions honored alongside MDC include Duke, Notre Dame and Texas A&M.

St. Thomas Univ. hosts ‘MetroTown’ Diversity Camp

American High graduate is Respect Life Ministry holds serving as Navy Petty Officer benefit luncheon September 12

St. Thomas University’s Center for Community Engagement, in collaboration with the MCCJ, once again hosted the 2015 MetroTown Summer Camp, an intensive, six-day residential camp focused on developing young leaders from across Miami-Dade County. A group of 45 high school students from across Miami-Dade County came to St. Thomas University's campus in July to build community ties and gain skills for cross cultural teamwork with the aim of resolving conflict and living peacefully in an increasingly diverse society. MCCJ, formerly known as the Miami Coalition of Christians and Jews, is one of the oldest and most respected diversity training organizations in Florida. Other MetroTown partners included the Miami Foundation, the Knight Foundation and the Miami-Dade Children’s Trust. During the camp, students engaged in honest dialogue on topics that are often considered taboo by many cultures, such as race, ethnicity, religion, gender, orientation, and socio-economic status. St. Thomas University’s Center for Community Engagement (CCE) staff served alongside MCCJ staff as hosts and counselors of the camp, while introducing the students to the opportunities for community-engaged learning at the university. Among the many community engagement programs coordinated by CCE are a partnership between the University and coffee farmers in Port-au-Paix, Haiti; working with farm workers; and assisting students in schools in the Miami-Gardens community.

A 2011 American High School graduate and Miami native is serving on one of the world’s largest warships, the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan. Petty Officer 3rd Class Reginald Cross is a yeoman aboard the San Diego-based ship, a Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and one of only ten operational aircraft carriers in the Navy today. “My responsibilities are administrative. Making sure the Sailors are here and are getting paid,” said Cross. Named in honor of former President Ronald Reagan, the carrier is longer than 3 football fields, at nearly 1,100 feet long. The ship is 252 feet wide and weighs more than 100,000 tons. Two nuclear reactors can push the ship through the water at nearly 35 mph. “My favorite part of serving on this ship is the experience and leadership skills I have learned,” said Cross. “I enjoy the educational benefits of the Navy. Before the Navy I never knew how I was going to pay for school.”
