Town Council proposes to keep existing milage rate

Nelson Rodriguez files to run for Florida House of Reprsentatives

MIAMI LAKES, FLORIDA

The Town of Miami Lakes is proposing to keep the same rate for property taxes for the 2019-2010 fiscal year as the town released preliminary figures for its operating budget last week. Council members were expected to adopt a tentative rate for property taxes of 2.3127 mills for next year during their July 16 Town Council meeting. The 2.3127 mills, which is $2.3127 per $1,000 of assessed property value, is the same rate the council chose for the current fiscal year. The new rate is expected to generate $7.3 million in property tax revenues. According to the budget, Miami Lakes enters a seventh year of economic growth attributed to increasing property values and new development along with the positive effects of prudent financial decisions over the last few years. The town invested in new community facilities, stormwater infrastructure improvements, enhanced communication and

transparency, police resources to accommodate a growing population, beautification projects and improved response times to requests for service though new technologies and process improvement. Miami Lakes’ estimated general fund budget is estimated at $16.6 million, a $1.3 million decrease to prior year’s projection as a result of FPL franchise fee revenue loss. The budget includes $342,500 in carry-over money from the current year, which represents the balance from the litigation reserve. Other revenues the town is projected to receive include $4.4 million in intergovernmental revenues, $2.8 million utility service tax and $306,650 in miscellaneous revenues. Police services, which constitutes about 52 percent of the town’s budget, is estimated at $8.5 million, which includes school crossing guards, for the next fiscal year.

By Surella Rodriguez Special to The Miami Laker The Monsignor Edward Pace High School (PACE) cheerleading team is ready to make history in 2020. The program’s elite status in high school cheerleading was solidified with the team’s success during the 2019 competitive season. The Spartan cheerleaders finished as runner-up champions in both the Extra Large Non-Tumbling division of the Florida High School State Championship and the District 4 Florida Regional Championship. As they embark on the new season, coaches Surella Rodriguez and Lisa Mason train the

members strategically to prepare them for the pressure of repeating a strong season. “We have to focus on teaching technique and training the new members on the duties and responsibilities of a PACE cheerleader” Mason explained. Considered the primary ambassadors of the athletic department, the cheerleading program at PACE is classified as an all-year sport. The cheerleaders participate in events such as football games, basketball games, pep rallies, school presentations and competitions. As part of their service to the community, they host cheerleading camps and tournaments (Please see Page 5)

Area resident Nelly Palma writes book on special needs experience Little Johnny may have Down Syndrome but the congenital disorder doesn’t stop him from making a big difference at school. Though he struggles with intellectual impairment each day of his life, four-year-old Johnny takes time to reach out to his peers and makes them laugh and feel good about themselves. Johnny is a heartwarming character in the new book entitled “Johnny’s At School, which Miami Lakes area resident Nelly Palma wrote based on her experience of working with children with special needs for years. The book which was Illustrated by 14-year-old Nicole Araujo, is published by Snow Fountain and can be purchased at Amazon. “This is a bilingual book for children, educators and parents about diversity and inclusion to highlight that every person can make this a better world, regardless of their abilities, she said during an exclusive interview. “It’s a beautiful story where the hero is a child with special needs. Palma, an assessment specialist for Early Learning Coalition of Palm Beach, said Johnny helps other special needs students who are struggling day-to-day regardless of his own disability. The connection was Johnny’s ability to identify the different needs of the other students, and they enjoyed being together. They found a way to connect and breaking the barrier of limitations of friendships. Palma, 49, said she visits schools and evaluates the programs for students with special needs and help them improve the quality of their education. She said their parents are always part of their kids’ education and depend on the teachers for guidance. “Parents with special needs kids are always involved, she said. “Parents are always there asking questions and interacting with teachers. the Miami-Dade PTA Council. He was also a member of the Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board. He first won a seat on the Miami Lakes Town Council in 2012 and was reelected in 2016. Rodriguez and former Councilmember Tony Lama initiated the first traffic summit in Miami Lakes where the state and county braintrust gathered to create solutions for the ongoing traffic gridlock. A third traffic summit took place last month at Miami Lakes Town Hall. According to Miami-Dade County Elections Department, Polo and Rodriguez are the only candidates who has filed papers to run in the election. Rodriguez is the second Miami Lakes council member to run for state representative. Former Councilmember Frank Mingo unsuccessfully ran against Polo in 2018.

Preview of Town Council meeting The Miami Lakes Town Council was expected to approve several ordinance, a host of resolutions and new business items during its July 16 regular meeting at Miami Lakes Town Hall. • Council members were expected to give their final approval for an ordinance to adopt its own franchise agreement with FPL for 30 years. The effective date of the ordinance should be the termination date of Miami-Dade’s current agreement with FPL (May 25, 2020) or an earlier date, if the town is able to prematurely terminate its interlocal with the county prior to May 25, 2020. The town is expected to receive about $2.3 million in the first year of the new FPL agreement, the ordinance says. After Miami Lakes incorporated in 2000, the county, through an interlock agreement with the town, shared the revenues collected from FPL users located within the town. Under the county-FPL agreement, and all other FPL franchise agreements entered into with MiamiDade cities, local governments are allowed to collect up to six percent surcharge on utility fees. According to the ordinance, the average residence in Miami Lakes (consuming 1000 kWh per month) will experience an average increase of $3.19 in their monthly electrical bill. • Council members were expected to give their final approval for an ordinance that now prohibits overnight street parking for commercial vehicles within the town’s rights-ofway adjacent to residential areas, parks and government buildings. • Council members were expected to give their final approval for an ordinance to

create a dockless mobility program to regulate dockles mobility programs and motorized scooters within Miami Lakes. • Council members were expected to give their initial approval for an ordinance amending a section of the town’s code for variance application fees. The town’s Planning and Zoning Board initiated a review process for the fees, and based on research by town staff, Miami Lakes was subsidizing many variance requests above and beyond existing fee schedule. Council members instructed Town Manager Ed Pidermann to adjust the variance fee schedule to recover the full cost of providing the service. • Council members were expected to approve a resolution to modify the conditions for a conditional use for establishing an indoor shooting range in an industrial section of Miami Lakes. Andy’s Shooting Range, 14000 N.W. 82 Avenue, which was strictly a training facility for law enforcement and academy cadets, has requested an allowable noise levels of eight regarding the use of the range by the public, and change the closing time to 9 p.m. instead of 8 p.m. • Council members were expected to authorize the town manager to execute contracts with SFM Security Services, Kent Security Services and FPI Security Services for the town’s special taxing districts for an amount not to exceed the town’s budgeted funds for those services. • Council members were expected to adopt a stormwater master plan update No. 3 and incorporating identified capital projects into the town’s strate-

gic plan. • Council members were expected to approve a resolution for a memorandum of understanding for school-based law enforcement officers with Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School. Last year in the wake of the Majorie Stoneman Douglas mass shooting, the town, as part of an agreement with the public school system, added officers at Bob Graham Education Center and Miami Lakes K-8 Center to protect students from gun violence. The agreement also included providing protection for private schools in Miami Lakes. The town has estimated the costs at $22,484 to assign a school resource officer at Our Lady of the Lakes. • Lawmakers were expected to approve Councilmember Josh Dieguez’s two proposals on traffic safety. Dieguez is suggesting placing traffic calming devices on Fairway Drive after the town has experienced too many threatening incidents along the roadway. He’s also recommending installing a traffic calming device at the K-9 Cove dog park along N.W. 79th Avenue until the town builds parking spaces adjacent to the outdoor facility. • Lawmakers were expected to approve Councilmember Marilyn Ruano’s proposal to instruct the town’s public works department to design an effective drainage project for residents who are affected by massive flooding in the Royal Oaks area. Ruano said the residents have been battling extreme flooding conditions on their block for years. • Council members were expected to approve Mayor Manny Cid’s proposal to create a resolution to support a Senate bill and Congress bill that would designate an independent zip code for Miami Lakes. Cid has been spearheading the issue since he first took office as a council member in 2010. The town’s resolution would support Senator Marco Rubio’s bill and Congressmen Mario Diaz-Balart’s bill to give the town its own zip code. • Council members were expected to approve Vice Mayor Nelson Rodriguez’s proposal to name the new courtyard areas at Royal Oaks Park after Brenna Vergara. Vergara was 10 years-old when she died from a rare heart condition during dance class. Vergara has inspired several Miami Lakes regulations that require athletes and people participating in physical activities at the town’s parks and facilities get a cardiogram to detect any heart problems.

Following the apparent suicides that shook up the town, Miami Lakes is pushing forward with Wong’s movement in hopes of saving lives as the Miami Lakes Veterans Committee is organizing a suicide awareness event which is scheduled for 6 p.m., Saturday, August 10, at the Mary Collins Community Center, 15151 N.W. 82 Avenue. The committee’s chairman, Nayib Hassan, said Miami Lakes should be ground zero for suicide prevention since mental health issues affect everyone in town. “We are losing individuals everyday to suicide,” he said last week during a Miami Lakes Town Council special meeting. “By bringing awareness, we may be able to save at least one person from suicide. We need to bring awareness to suicide in the community as a whole.” The family members and friends of Wong and Ruiz urged council members to honor their memories with an annual suicide awareness event. “I couldn’t help my son because he didn’t give me any signals,” said Ruiz’s father. “I couldn’t help him.” Wong’s father said he’s passionate about being part of the event because he wants to save lives. “We will continue to fight suicide and save lives,” he said. Miami Lakes resident Marcus Gutierrez said Ruiz and Wong are true heroes and thanked the town for honoring their memory by raising suicide awareness. “Emily is to be commended,” he said. “I’m very proud to live in a community where the

council is open to doing this and watching all the kids get involved to break that stigma.” According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), each year, more than 41,000 individuals die by suicide, leaving behind their friends and family members to navigate the tragedy of loss. Suicidal thoughts, although common, should not be considered normal and often indicate more serious issues. People are urged to call 911 immediately if a loved one or friend is suffering from a mental illness and contemplating suicide. Council member Luis Collazo, who’s co-sponsoring the suicide prevention event with Mayor Manny Cid, said Emily approached him for his support for the event. “And I will support it for a very long time,” said Collazo, a mental health specialist. “Emily’s work is working.” Collazo said when he first got elected to political office, he received an email that a young man committed suicide. “It was something that hit home to me because of my profession,” he said. “You choose a profession not for the glamour but you chose it to make an impact on people.” Cid said Emily came to see him about a month ago to honor her best friend. “We’re committed to make this a movement to help save lives,” he said. Vice Mayor Nelson Rodriguez has some advice for anyone who’s experiencing any mental health issues. “Please talk to someone about your pain,” he said.

A Guide to Obesity Health Risks THE MIAMI LAKER

By Dr. Jorge Sosa Special to The Miami Laker Almost 40 percent of U.S. adults and 18.5 percent of youth are obese according to the 2015-2016 findings by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The findings are important because obesity health risks create a number of medical issues such as high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease. Obesity hampers mobility and

It’s Spa Month

MIAMI SPA MONTH is finally here through August. The Spa at Shula’s located at 15150 Bull Run Road is participating with an exclusive Miami Spa Month menu. may have a negative effect on self-esteem. Definition of Obesity in adults is having a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or more, and extreme obesity is 40-plus BMI. In youth (up to age 19), obesity is being at or above the 95th percentile on the CDC growth charts with extreme obesity at or above the 120 percent mark. Many factors influence weight including family history, eating habits, hormones, lifestyle choices and psychological factors. Obesity isn’t just a cosmetic issue defined by eating too much and lack of self-control. Obesity is a progressive disease that may increase due to chronic sleep loss, stress, some medications, pollutants and eating types of food such as those high in corn syrup, sugar, fat or processed meats. Types of Obesity Health Risks People who are morbidly obese have the greatest risk for developing serious obesityrelated medical conditions with such common conditions as: • Type 2 diabetes. • Heart disease-related issues such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, angina, congestive heart failure. • Stroke. • Bone and joint problems including arthritis, back and joint pain, knee pain.

• Breathing issues like asthma or sleep apnea. • Infertility or pregnancy complications including gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, pre-eclampsia and C-section delivery. • Gallbladder disease. • Gastrointestinal issues. • Liver disease. • Kidney disease. • Stress urinary incontinence. • Depression and eating disorders • Certain types of cancers. • Skin fold rashes • Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Morbid obesity increases the risk of dying at a young age due to the many health issues contributed to obesity. What to Do About Obesity Health Risks Many programs are available to help with weight loss. For people who have tried numerous diets and have not been successful in keeping off weight, bariatric surgery may be a solution for weight loss. Many of the benefits of bariatric surgery are related to improvement in other medical conditions as a result of the weight loss. Significant health benefits from surgical weight loss may allow the patient to feel better; have more energy; reduce cholesterol levels; improve or resolve Type 2 diabetes;

Four FIU football stars selected for Preseason All-CUSA teams PAGE 14

JULY 19, 2019

Florida International University (FIU) junior linebacker and Monsignor Pace High School alumnus Sage Lewis was among his four teammates who earned 12 selections to Phil Steele’s 2019 Preseason AllCUSA teams. His teammates – junior offensive tackle D’Antne Demery, senior defensive end Teair Tart and senior quarterback and wide receiver Maurice Alexander – also made the publication’s first team laurels for the preseason. For Lewis and Alexander, the first team honors are the second this preseason for the pair after they were awarded spots on the Athlon Preseason AllCUSA First Team last month. In addition to Alexander's first team honors on special teams he was also awarded a spot on the third team as a wide receiver. After making the move to middle linebacker in 2018, Lewis broke the school record in total tackles (132) and solos (83) while ranking first in the league for both of those categories. Lewis' 83 solos ranked 10th in the nation last season with that same number ranking third in the nation among 2019 returnees. Lewis was awarded C-USA First Team honors following his stellar junior campaign in 2018. Demery played and started

in 11 games last season at left tackle leading an offensive line that allowed a school-record low eight sacks on the year. The total ranked first in the league and third overall in the country. Demery was awarded AllCUSA Honorable Mention for his efforts last season. Tart is expected to have a big year after earning 16.5 tackles in his first season with the Panthers last year. Tart led the team in tackles for loss (7.0) and sacks (4). Alexander had a breakout season in 2018 after making the move from quarterback to wideout and return man. The Florida City native was a highlight reel in the return game (when teams were brave enough to kick to him) as he averaged 14.6 yards per punt return to rank fifth in the nation among those with at least three returns on the year. Alexander was awarded C-USA First Team honors for his special team efforts in 2018. Entering its 18th year of football in 2019, the FIU Panthers are coming off a program-best nine wins a season ago. FIU capped 2018 with a 35-32 victory over Toledo in the Makers Wanted Bahamas Bowl to finish the season 9-4 overall. Under head coach Butch Davis the Panthers have earned backto-back bowl appearances and 17 wins in the last two years.

Two of them were part of the Florida delegation last year where they won Gold. This is the first time three athletes have been selected from the same team and club in South Florida. Elaisa Villar, Angeles Alderete and Taylor Pagan all attend Mater Academy and play for High Voltage Volleyball Academy. The High Performance (HP) Championships are a major step in USA Volleyball’s path to the podium. The event is a coed international tournament held in the US with the purpose

of developing the international game of youth athletes in the US. The tournament returns to Fort Lauderdale, which last hosted in 2017. Approximately 145 teams from region HP teams, international teams and teams from the USA Volleyball High Performance pipeline will participate. Currently registered international teams include Canada, Chile, Liberia, New Zealand, Peru and Puerto Rico. The competition takes place from July 18 - 22 at the Broward County Convention Center.

Jose Marti student team works on project with Jet Propulsion Lab A student team from Jose Marti MAST 6-12 Academy (JMMAST) led by teacher Erica Henderson recently participated in a project to develop an advanced spectrometer processor chip with Dr. Adrian Tang of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California. The development project, which is supported under NASA’s 2018-2021 Astrophysics Research and Analysis Program (APRA), seeks to develop an advanced spectrometer chip for space instruments that can detect trace gasses and chemicals in atmospheres or distant stellar objects. The chip is being developed primarily for use in ground and space-based telescopes to study star-forming regions both in our galaxy and others throughout the visible universe. Beyond astronomy, the chip is expected to play an important role in planetary exploration of our solar system. The chip provides a means for deep space robotic missions to study the atmospheres of planets and primitive planetary bodies (comets and asteroids) throughout our solar system and detect important compounds like water, oxygen, carbon dioxide and organic chemicals that give us a better understanding of where life might exist and how our solar system formed. The spectrometer chip itself is an extremely complicated

JOSE MARTI MAST student Elizabeth Berenguer and JPL’s Adrian Tang in front of the Voyager spacecraft model at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. device containing over 200 subsystems and well over a million transistors. The chip houses complicated digital and analog functions including a very highspeed processor and an ultrawide band analog to digital converter. A key challenge that arises from this extreme complexity is how to keep all these different sub-systems within the chip synchronized. Being synchronized ensures that no “traffic jams” occur within the data pathways and that data needed by each sub-system arrives on time, sort of like how Amtrak manages their railroad. To allow this management, the spectrometer has over 200 different settings that can speed up or slow down various parts of the chip in order to speed up data running late and slow down data that is ahead of schedule. This is where the JMMAST team takes over. Henderson and her student team led by Elizabeth Berenguer and Hadrian Gonzalez Castellanos developed a complex calibration algorithm that autonomously looks at data output by the

spectrometer chip and determines if the synchronization is correct, or if settings need to be adjusted. Detection of synchronization issues from the output data is not a simple problem to solve as the data itself can look vastly different depending on what the spectrometer is looking at, for example Earth’s N2/O2 atmosphere versus the CO2 dominated atmosphere of Venus or Mars. Their algorithm needed to take this into account extracting features from the data that can be attributed to synchronization while not being confused by changes in the underlying data. As part of the project Berenguer and Henderson visited NASA’s JPL on June 21 to present their results and discuss how it will be integrated into the software that runs on the spectrometer chip. As part of that visit they also enjoyed a tour of the JPL facilities including the spaceflight operations facility, spacecraft assembly facility, insitu rover laboratory and several of the laboratories where the spectrometer chip is being developed.

them with $4,500 to use toward art supplies. LCMS art students utilized their Cambridge Global Perspective theme of Migration to create a self-standing sculpture called “They Matter Too!” featuring an adult turtle with a hatchling. The artwork captured

the most votes. Publix and Channel 10 created this contest to help share awareness of how much Earth matters. The students really had an amazing experience creating their sculpture.

Two dedicated teachers retire from Spanish Lake PAGE 18

JULY 19, 2019

Spanish Lake Elementary (SLE) bids a fond farewell to two highly proficient, talented and respected veteran teachers, Sharon Dames and Sharon Wallen who retired this past June. The teachers were surprised at an end of the year school retreat with a full day on the Ft. Lauderdale water taxi with stops along the way for unity games, food refuels, praise, songs and plaques for the retirees. At the end of the year, each grade-level celebrated their retiring teacher with student led activities and a luncheon. Dames, born and raised in the Bahamas, knew from the time she was in high school that her goal was to become a teacher. She enjoyed helping any student with their studies. Not being fond of the limelight and being very modest, she could only except thanks. She fulfilled her dream with graduation from Barry University and graduate degrees from the University of Florida and Barry University. Teaching

in the Bahamas and then in Miami-Dade County Public schools, she completed 41 years of teaching with her specialty being Language Arts. Her goal was to remain in the classroom enhancing one child’s education and life at a time. She loved her teaching time at SLE as she felt she grew so much professionally. She worked with such knowledgeable teachers who always helped each other, planned together and were there to always “boost” each other. Now, Dames is ready to join her husband in retirement, declutter her home, garden, stay active at church, reach out to help the elderly and participate in all family functions. Entering the honorable profession of teaching as a career was the best decision Dames claims she could have ever made. Wallen excelled in the area of Language Arts and has served from reading coach to curriculum support specialist to teacher of gifted. The most important part of her job was to ensure her students excel, gain

confidence and witness growth within a peaceful classroom environment infused with stress management strategies. Each year, she inspired to be more creative and with better success. Wallen’s achievements are many, such as designated on the National Teachers Honor Roll, National Deans List, 2018-2019 Marquis Who’s in America and Who’s Who In American Teachers which identifies the most influential teachers. She’s active in Delta Kappa Pi, an honorary society for key women holding key positions from historian to chapter president. Her biggest surprise this year came from Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez, District 3 Chairwoman Audrey M. Edmonson and County Commissioner Esteban Bravo Jr. who awarded her praise and a special certificate for her community contributions. For 17 years,Wallen participated in the HOPE Contest initiative to raise public awareness for care of domestic animals initiated by Dr. Martin J, Karp, District 3 MDCPS

SHARON DAMES School Board. Each year her class placed first in the class division. Although Wallen looks forward to retirement, she proclaims, “Do love what I do!” She will miss the camaraderie of this miraculous SLE staff and

SHARON WALLEN watching her group of students develop and grow. As to what she hopes retirement brings, she responded that she believes faith rules everything, “we have a purpose and God has a plan for our lives.”

MLEC celebrates 12th straight year as ‘A’ school THE MIAMI LAKER

By Michelle Mairena Special to The Miami Laker Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC) enjoyed an exceptional school year. It was named the nation’s best Magnet School, earned a STEM designation, its students won various individual accolades and many

of its extra-curricular clubs won national awards. Jaguars simply went above and beyond expectations this past academic year. So when Florida school grades were released and MLEC was named an “A” school for the 12th year, the news did not come as a surprise.

Miami-Dade County Commission chairwoman Audrey M. Edmonson recognized Monsignor Edward Pace high school recent graduate student and Miami Lakes resident Vanessa Perez-Robles, who received Amazon’s Future Engineer Scholarship. She was among 100 winners nationwide as part of the tech giant’s push to promote education and careers in computer science. Perez-Robles was awarded a scholarship of up to $10,000

to study computer science at the college of her choice. She will enroll at Dartmouth in the fall of 2019. Launched last November, Amazon Future Engineer is taking the childhood-to-career approach to inspire and educate children and young adults. It’s part of Amazon’s $50 million investment in computer science/STEM education. The company has donated more than $10 million to organizations that promote such programs across the country.

Pace grad Vanessa PerezRobles honored for grant

For Jaguars, it seems, there’s always a new milestone to achieve. “This is the twelfth year that MLEC is an “A” school. Clearly, it’s a special place,” said English department chair, Neyda Borges. “Each year, our kids shine. They learn, they achieve and they prepare to take on the college and career world. Test scores and school grades just show that MLEC truly is the best place to be.” Every year at MLEC, students work hard, they hone their career skills with their academy work, study for their upcoming AP exams or AICE papers, work with diligence and perseverance as they excel through the academic year. Jaguars put all their sweat and tears into becoming the best students they can be and under the strong leadership of their top Jaguar, princiipal Lourdez Diaz, as well as of the faculty who dedicate all their work into exceeding expectations, MLEC was able to, once again, achieve this academic prestige. “Year after year I continue to be impressed by our teachers and students and their collective drive to succeed,” said Diaz. “Excellence is never an accident, it is the result of hard work, dedication and perseverance. I am so very proud of each

and every one of them.” MLEC is not only celebrating its own achievement as an “A” school though, the school is also celebrating its district, Miami-Dade County Public Schools. For the second time, MDCPS was rated an “A” school district, and there were no “F” schools within the county for the third consecutive year, an enormous and impressive milestone for the county. “This is the proudest moment of my career. We are once again an “A” school district and 99 percent of our schools are rated ‘A,’ ‘B,’ or ‘C’,” said Alberto Carvalho, Superintendent of Miami-Dade

your hometown 305-817-4015

County Public Schools. “Hats off to our teachers and leaders.” For MLEC’s Jaguars, the title of being an “A” school for the 12th year is just proof of something we already know, MLEC is truly the nation’s best. As the 2019-2020 school year is about to commence, one can only wonder what milestones MLEC will surpass. “I’m so excited and proud to see the efforts made by our faculty and staff have paid off once again,” said cambridge academy leader Evans DeSimone. “It’s not an easy task,” she continued. “We did it!”

Five outstanding Miami Dade College (MDC) aviation students will receive scholarship support to help pay for flight training and tuition as this year’s recipients of the prestigious Timothy E. Johnson Jr. Scholarship. To date, nearly 40 students from MDC’s acclaimed Eig-Watson School of Aviation have been awarded the Timothy E. Johnson Jr. Scholarship. MDC students Jose Manuel Garcia, Yassel Garcia Herrera, Andres Laluz, Zachary Ondriezek and Shane Pineda received the award, each receiving $8,000 in scholarship funding. The Timothy E. Johnson

Jr. Scholarship was established in 2013 to honor the life and legacy of Timothy Jr., a dedicated pilot and humanitarian who passed away in an aviation accident in 2012. His love for flying paved the way for essential scholarship support that lifts, empowers and provides opportunity for our next generation of aviation professionals. “Today’s scholarship recipients have given us the opportunity to turn what would be a very dark day for our family into a day that’s full of hope and promise,” said Nina Johnson, sister of the late Timothy E. do at Montessori Children’s House of Miami Lakes. American Heritage Dictionary defines preschool as a process of being educated, especially education constituting a planned series of courses over a period of time. The Montessori Philosophy falls within this category and provides a series of academic lessons to preschool children and grades 1-5 in our elementary classroom thereby advancing them to a higher level of education at an earlier age. They are guided in Math, Reading, Science, Language, Handwriting, Routines, Music, Conduct, etc., in a specially prepared environment. This is an educational advantage (whereby children lose the power of absorption around the age of 6 years) by preparing a child for a lifetime of learning and success. In the beginning the Montessori focus in preschool was on Coordination, Consecration and Independence which are developed utilizing the Montessori Philosophy with the use of didactic instructional materials. Also taking into consideration three sensitive periods of absorption, or phases in which they have a predisposition or sensitivity to learning specific skills. Through repetition, they develop an interest, an inner joy and pleasure in their spirit of their accomplishment. In the beginning, the sensitive period for language begins at birth absorbing the mother ’s voice and lip movements and tongue. Maria Montessori believed it was important for adults to converse with children continually (reading, singing, listening, etc.) during this sensitive period to avoid the possibility he/she may be irrevocably damaged. She believed it was particularly import to enriching their language and give them every opportunity to learn and form new words. Maria Montessori stated that discipline begins when children find an activity that has some value to them. For this reason, she introduced the idea of prepared environment, an environment which allows children to have freedom to develop at their own pace after they have been shown the lesson, along with opportunities and tools need to develop concentration and to foster and cultivate the spirit of each child. 19
